Liven AS entered into a cooperation agreement with Oma Grupp OÜ for the realisation of a development project and the establishment of a 50/50 joint venture for a property at Erika 6a and 6b in Põhja-Tallinn
According to the existing detailed spatial plan and the issued building permit
it is possible to build two six-storey residential buildings and a nine-storey building
combining a reconstructed water tower and a new building section on top of it
The development project envisages the construction of a total of 68 homes with a total selling area of approximately 4,900 m2
Sales of the first homes are planned to start in the summer of 2025
with construction starting towards the end of the same year
and the end of the project's construction scheduled for 2027
PIN Arhitektid OÜ is the architect of the buildings and Oma Ehitaja AS is the general contractor
The total estimated investment for the development project
including the construction of the buildings
“Joint projects with landowners are a great opportunity for Liven to create homes in locations that are so good that they are not for sale,” commented Andero Laur
chairman of the management board of Liven AS
"Liven has had a number of successful cooperation projects with Oma Ehitaja AS in the past
the most recent being the soon-to-be completed Iseära apartment buildings
We are very pleased that the previous cooperation has led us to a new form of cooperation and new projects."
Laur added: “We are also very pleased that we were able to once again supplement Liven's development portfolio with a project in an area where we did not have an active offer and which we can start selling in a relatively short period of time.”

the cornerstone was laid in the Volta quarter for the new business and community centre of Põhja-Tallinn – Volta HUB
The anchor tenant of the first phase of the Volta HUB under construction will be MyFitness
which plans to open the most modern fitness club in the Baltics here in the beginning of the new year
Real estate developer Endover continues to work on the Volta quarter and has laid the cornerstone of the Volta HUB business centre
which will cover 40,700 square meters and become the largest mixed-use centre in the area
The complex will consist of five buildings
The architecture of Volta HUB was designed by ARS Projekt
half of the Volta quarter has already been completed
and with the emergence of new residential and workspaces both in Volta itself and in the surrounding projects
the demand for retail and service spaces is growing," said Uku Tint
Tint explained that Põhja-Tallinn – and particularly the “golden mile” area of Noblessner-Volta-Krulli – needs additional services and retail spaces that would enable people living and working in Põhja-Tallinn to manage their daily needs according to the "15-minute city" principle
"Quality of life and property value increase when most necessities are within easy reach," Tint noted
pointed out that turning a historic industrial building into a modern urban space is an unusual project: "It requires particular attention to detail and very close cooperation between the developer
Our goal is to combine the historical character and dignity of the building with modern functionality and high construction quality."
The Most Modern Fitness Club in the Baltics and World-Class Padel Courts
The anchor tenant of the first phase of Volta HUB will be MyFitness
which will create the largest and most modern fitness club in Põhja-Tallinn
According to Endover’s Development Director
negotiations are underway in the first phase of Volta HUB with grocery stores
"MyFitness has been considering expanding into Põhja-Tallinn for some time
as we have received feedback from our members that there is a strong demand for us specifically in this area
It is a developing urban environment where the population is constantly growing
and a fitness club closer to home is a highly anticipated service," said Tiina Matikainen
The new club will feature around 2,000 m² of training areas – a gym equipped with the latest technology
group workouts ranging from strength training to yoga
and comfortable changing rooms with saunas
A Recovery zone for post-workout recovery and a smoothie bar are also planned
the club should be completed by the beginning of 2026
Volta also features a padel centre with four full panoramic courts
The manager of the Endover Volta Padel Centre is Siim Tuus
a two-time Estonian champion who has been involved in developing the sport in Estonia since 2017
the Volta padel courts are covered with the same Mondo Supercourt XN artificial turf used by top players on the FIP Premier Tour
Future phases of Volta HUB are set to include a large grocery store
Educational institutions have also expressed interest in the available spaces
and local residents are particularly looking forward to the addition of a day spa
A Future Attraction Center in Põhja-Tallinn
Põhja-Tallinn has become one of the hottest development areas
former industrial zones have been transformed into dynamic business
Põhja-Tallinn is home to nearly 65,000 residents
"The market is not standing still – the dynamics have changed
The fact that nearly 100,000 people will live in Põhja-Tallinn in the future is no longer just a vision
but a reality arriving in the coming years," said Tint
which compiles real estate development statistics
the Volta quarter was the most preferred new development in Tallinn in 2024
both in terms of the number of transactions and sales turnover
Põhja-Tallinn was the most preferred district by sales turnover
with total transactions amounting to 96.7 million euros
Head of Corporate Banking at Bigbank Eesti
which finances the development of Volta HUB
Endover has significantly influenced the Estonian real estate market over the years by bringing innovative products to the market and thoroughly changing the Tallinn cityscape
"The biggest winners from successful projects have been the residents
for whom the city has become more attractive
for whom new and modern spaces have been created
One of Endover’s main focuses has been Põhja-Tallinn
where demand for both commercial and residential spaces remains strong," confirmed Roosalu
- The detailed plan covers 11.25 hectares
- The development volume is 142 000 m²
- 90,000 m² of residential space and 52,000 m² of commercial space will be constructed
- A total of 29 buildings will be constructed
- Approximately 1,400 parking spaces
- A kindergarten and a 15,000 m² park area
- A new infrastructure and two new streets: Mootori and Uus-Volta
- The entire quarter will be completed by 2029
nearly 25,000 people will live and work in the Volta area

A golden opportunity to sneak back into the competition became another What If story as the Penguins lost to the Philly Flyers
the Penguins delivered one of their best performances of the season
I know many of you would be on board for a team that moved on from superstars and put forth that kind of effort every night
and it’s easy to get behind until you actually have to get behind it
Teams with that lack of talent can scrap and claw for a while
It’s easy to root for the Davids against the Goliaths
Numerous players picked up their game to genuinely unexpected levels
Anthony Beauvillier, Danton Heinen
The four Penguins were well above board and lifted the team
Beauvillier was especially good on Friday and Saturday
It’s time to start talking about re-signing him instead of trading him
and his trade value is limited because he’s neither a goal scorer nor a blood and guts bottom-sixer that grabs attention
Beauvillier has 18 points (12-6-18) in 56 games
but on a team with the worst goal differential in the Eastern Conference and third worst in the NHL
It’s disciplined work in all three zones with some skills and good skating
Joseph is also reclaiming his top-pairing spot beside Kris Letang
“I’m just out there having fun
and I think that’s when I play my best,” Joseph told Pittsburgh Hockey Now on Saturday
and we’re making a playoff push right now–even though it’s a little late–I’m just trying to be out there and help the team win as much as possible and having fun while doing so.”
Dubas did well in getting Matt Grzelcyck after he forewent giving Joseph a Qualifying Offer on June 30
Grzelcyk will recoup a nice asset on the trade block
but Joseph should recoup a value contract and stability into next season on the Penguins blue line
Joseph’s mobility can pick up that slack
but the unique thing about Joseph is that he’s always improving–even at 26
Beauvillier and Joseph have far more value to the Penguins than any replacements or pieces they’d acquire in a trade
The Pittsburgh Penguins and Jesse Puljujarvi will part ways after 2 p.m
but the results didn’t merit any more opportunities
It’s as simple as that. It’s not coach Mike Sullivan’s fault. It’s not Evgeni Malkin’s fault
It’s not the fault of general manager Kyle Dubas
The furor and emotional attachment to Puljujarvi are bewildering to the point of nonsensicalness
Remember last season when Alex Nylander was the poor soul getting screwed by the callous Penguins machine led by Sullivan
I still get comments and replies bringing up Daniel Sprong in the same context
It’s time to let go because the reality is pretty clear
the hockey people know what they’re doing
32 teams could have snagged Puljujarvi for nothing
The final straw was in Puljujarvi’s last five games
It wasn’t a matter of ice time or opportunity; he played nearly 12 minutes in each of those games
Players who stick around make the best of the chance
But let me go further and explain the shortcomings
He lacked the agility to change directions within the sometimes chaotic play
It wasn’t uncommon to watch Puljujarvi clack his skates together in a crossover move and fall to the ice
which created a problem in getting to spots in all three zones
but he would also vanish for long periods–the exact knock on him after years in Edmonton
But I guess the multiple Edmonton coaches and GMs shafted Puljujarvi
which meant he couldn’t kill penalties
and generally wasn’t well suited for a fourth-line role
Nor was Puljujarvi consistent or productive enough for a top-six role
So, in that sense, no, he wasn’t better than Noel Acciari or Matt Nieto
the misdirected cacophony of demand was day and night
Before you volunteer to trade everyone and everything not nailed down
the team does need enough players to continue into next season
and “give the young players a chance” is a nice bumper sticker that can be harmful in real life if said players aren’t ready
Rickard Rakell is quickly becoming the hot name on the trade boards
and high on Nick Kypreos’s Sportsnet board 3.0
Rakell has three more seasons under contract after this
and his cap hit is a very manageable $5 million
there is no rush to make a move or make a decision
He’s playing some of his best hockey
and he’s become the only player with enough hockey IQ and skill to fill the left wing beside Sidney Crosby
I’m not trading Rakell for anything less than a three-asset haul: A first
Or skip the third-rounder and make it two B-level prospects or one A-level young’in
Dubas shouldn’t move Rakell for less than a premium
The salary cap spike might also open the market for Erik Karlsson this summer
Read More: ‘Up in the Air’: Karlsson Talks Possible Trade, Penguins Path
It’s also fair to wonder if Kevin Hayes has played his way into the trade conversation
he’s been quite good in his third-line center role
A contender that needs a bit of offense in the bottom six might do well to look at him as a bargain option
The Penguins could increase their haul by holding back part of Hayes’s $3.5 million salary cap hit

Hundreds of Tsarist-era munitions were found in Lahesuu Harbor in Põhja-Tallinn last week during construction work
Demolition experts from the Rescue Board were called to the harbor last Tuesday after 880 explosive devices were discovered
The munitions were naval ordnance from the Tsarist era
The explosives were discovered when an excavator operator noticed shell-like objects in a pile of soil and informed the site supervisor
The supervisor then called the emergency number 112
which sent bomb disposal experts to the scene
The diameter of the items found ranged from 75 millimeters to 152 millimeters
The explosives were removed and transported to the bomb disposal unit in Eastern Estonia for destruction
when construction and excavation work restarts after the winter months
the number of bomb squad callouts also increases
The Rescue Board reminds the public that explosive devices come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes
and it is not easy to assess their condition based on appearance alone
The agency said the only correct course of action when encountering a suspicious object is to call the emergency number 112
No attempts should be made to remove the items
It should be marked using available materials
its coordinates should be determined using a smartphone or other device
The Rescue Board stressed that punishments are not handed out if the object is not found to be explosive

The City of Tallinn offers residents free legal consultations
which take place in each city district according to a set schedule
The next consultation days will be held on 8 May at the Põhja-Tallinn District Government and 29 May at the Kristiine District Government
According to real estate market statistics
Volta Quarter was the most sought-after new residential development in Tallinn – both in terms of the number of transactions and sales turnover
a cornerstone was laid for another historic building – the Volta Galerii Loftid residential and commercial complex
which will serve as a link between the Volta and Krulli quarters
1,235 apartment sales transactions were concluded in Tallinn’s new developments at an average price of 4,438 euros per square meter
Põhja-Tallinn led in terms of sales turnover
with transactions totalling 96.7 million euros
The average price per square meter in Volta Quarter was 5,161 euros
exceeding both the market average and the average for Põhja-Tallinn
The highest number of transactions for new development apartments took place in Haabersti
The highest price per square meter was recorded in Pirita at 5,599 euros
where the average price reached 5,124 euros per square meter
indicating a shift in the popularity of residential areas from the city centre towards the coastline
According to Endover’s Sales Director Annika Saar
the popularity of Volta Quarter lies in its comprehensively planned living environment and a wide selection of apartments and commercial spaces
“The offering includes homes in both reconstructed historic buildings and trendy energy-efficient new constructions
the area will soon be home to the district’s largest business centre
featuring the latest MyFitness sports club
as well as service and retail spaces,” Saar explained
and plans are underway for a kindergarten.”
a cornerstone was laid in Volta Quarter for a historic industrial building dating back to 1912
which will be revitalized as a modern residential and commercial complex – Volta Galerii Loftid
successfully issued bonds worth 8.8 million euros
“The addition of professional investors like Evernord benefits all market participants
Endover alone is planning approximately 100,000 square meters of residential and commercial real estate
we will be opening new financing opportunities,” said Endover’s CFO Kadri Koplimäe
The historic limestone building will house two floors of modern commercial spaces
while the architectural vision of ARS Projekt will add a third floor with a contemporary metallic facade
The first floor will feature prestigious commercial spaces characterized by authentic limestone walls
these spaces will be easily accessible to employees and residents of Volta and Krulli quarters
The second floor will house micro-apartments ranging from 19 to 60 m²
which are already in high demand in the area
According to Endover’s Sales Director
the need for such spaces will increase further in the near future as large technology companies
bringing thousands of new employees to the district
The third floor will feature luxury apartments of up to 155 m² equipped with Bisly smart home solutions
as well as terraces overlooking Volta’s quiet inner courtyard
approximately 40,000 people will move to Põhja-Tallinn
with at least half of them living and working in Volta
as well as in the neighbouring Krulli and Noblessner quarters,” said Endover’s Sales Director Annika Saar
She added that it is crucial to carefully consider the development of the urban environment: “Our focus should not be on creating more opportunities for movement but on designing urban space in a way that minimizes the need for commuting
We are developing Volta Quarter based on the ‘15-minute city’ principle
where all essential services are within walking distance.”
The architectural concept of Volta Galerii Loftid was designed by ARS Projekt
and construction is being carried out by Metropoli Ehitus
half of Volta Quarter has been completed – 13 buildings have been constructed or renovated
and new infrastructure has been established
while two high-rise buildings are currently in the design phase
featuring the district’s largest MyFitness sports club
In redeveloping the over 125-year-old Volta industrial quarter
Endover follows the ‘15-minute city’ principle
The total development area covers 142,000 square meters
comprising over 750 apartments and more than 50,000 square meters of commercial space
The heart of the quarter will be Volta HUB
a kindergarten and a 15,000-square-meter park area will be completed in the coming years
The Põhja-Tallinn (North Tallinn) comprehensive plan
outlines how one of the capital's largest districts should develop
The plan emphasizes opening up the coastline to the public
prioritizing public transport and cycling infrastructure and integrating new development areas with each other
The development of the new Põhja-Tallinn comprehensive plan has taken 15 years and is now at the stage where the city government is expected to approve it later in January and submit it to the city council for adoption
as public discussions will follow the adoption process
we still have several steps to take before it is officially established," noted Tallinn Deputy Mayor Madle Lippus (SDE)
Fifteen years is undeniably too long to draft a district's comprehensive plan
Since the plans for other districts also require updates
the city government is considering the need for a completely new comprehensive plan for all of Tallinn
"The Põhja-Tallinn comprehensive plan has taken an unreasonably long time to complete
We also have other plans that need updating and older ones that need to be reviewed
It is a very clear goal moving forward to ensure that comprehensive plans are not processed over such lengthy periods," Lippus stated
"The discussions we are currently having are centered on whether
instead of continuing with the draft comprehensive plan for the Kesklinn (City Center) district
it might make more sense to create a new plan for the entirety of Tallinn."
The reason is straightforward: both the city and the principles of urban planning have evolved during the extended drafting period
"There are many issues that require a citywide approach
the green network and the planning of schools and kindergartens," said Lippus
Population of Põhja-Tallinn could grow by 40,000 people
The Põhja-Tallinn comprehensive plan aims to address the major challenges of this rapidly changing district: opening up the largely inaccessible coastline and former industrial areas while improving the district's overall connectivity
The focus is on "opening and connecting," as Deputy Mayor Lippus put it
Põhja-Tallinn is somewhat challenging to navigate
There is the large Kopli freight station and other long
The comprehensive plan outlines how to open these spaces
including plans for new roads and pathways
with the recently adopted Krulli development plan
it's not just about the buildings or what needs to be preserved but also ensuring the area becomes accessible to people — something it currently is not," Lippus explained
The largest development areas in Põhja-Tallinn include former factory and port zones
known as "brownfield" sites: the Paavli and Maleva quarters
Estimates suggest that once these areas are fully developed
the district's population will increase by nearly 40,000 residents
This population growth is expected to be accompanied by an increase in jobs
the number of jobs is projected to exceed the number of new residents (11,411 jobs compared to 10,935 residents)
The greatest population growth is expected in areas encompassing the Noblessner
Manufaktuuri and Kopli freight station developments
with an estimated increase of 13,445 residents
where the Bekker and Meeruse port areas are key development zones
the population is expected to grow by 9,500
The nearly 14-hectare Paavli quarter is earmarked in the comprehensive plan to become a local business hub
The plan notes that the area currently lacks a street network
the quarter will be integrally connected to Kopli and Sõle streets
must be designed with priority given to pedestrians and cyclists," the explanatory memorandum states
Located in the northern part of the district
the Maleva quarter is currently dominated by commercial and industrial buildings
it is envisioned as a mixed-use urban area with both residential and business functions
a transport hub connecting Kopli and Maleva streets with public transport will need to be established
The 30-hectare Meeruse and Bekker port areas
located in the Kopli subdistrict and currently home to warehouses
will be transformed into a residential and commercial quarter with a seaside promenade running through it
which is currently a mostly closed-off port zone
this area is planned to feature a mixed-use urban environment with residential
The existing port infrastructure will be repurposed and made more accessible
To make possible the planned Hundipea urban district in the Paljassaare development area
a Sitsi public transport hub connecting it to Kopli and Tööstuse streets will need to be constructed
redesigning the intersection and adding new transport corridors," Lippus said
Some of the major development areas are already under construction
while others remain in the planning stages
the natural progression is to prioritize projects closer to the city center
gradually moving toward the development of more remote areas
"It makes sense that the Krulli development is progressing faster; it borders Kalamaja
which people mentally associate with the city center
Fully developing the more distant areas takes longer
even from the perspective of developers' business plans
You can only develop areas for people who are willing to live that far from the city center
but that readiness doesn't happen overnight
Kopli still feels far away for many — it's not their first choice," Lippus explained
Lippus also noted that developers have been consulted during the drafting of the comprehensive plan
We're not planning the future on a blank slate but constantly weighing different interests and possibilities
The infrastructure there has to support it all," she said
Although the population is expected to grow by tens of thousands with the realization of development plans
population forecasts suggest a decline in demand for kindergarten places
no major changes to the school network will be necessary over the next 10 to 15 years
the number of high school students is expected to increase by 20 percent compared to current levels
meaning Põhja-Tallinn will need one additional high school
there is already an urgent need for more kindergartens and schools in Põhja-Tallinn
"There are significant issues we are addressing as we go
the Manufaktuuri kindergarten is in the design phase and the entire development area is already underway and will be completed soon
we have two new schools planned for Põhja-Tallinn
A kindergarten is also planned for the Krulli quarter
Kindergartens have been planned for all development areas," Lippus explained
More residential buildings can be built if tram or train stops nearby
The growing population will pose an even greater challenge for traffic
as Põhja-Tallinn is currently served by only two major roads: Sõle and Kopli streets
The comprehensive plan emphasizes the need to prioritize the development of public transportation and cycling infrastructure
"All mobility must be oriented toward prioritizing public transportation
with a dense network and convenient transfer options," states the draft explanatory memorandum
The plan establishes a requirement that all development areas in Põhja-Tallinn must be connected to public transport
with the scale of developments tied to the availability of tram lines or
"The principle should be that the better the rail transport connection
the greater the volume of development that can be realized," the memorandum explains
the preference for trams is straightforward: they have a higher capacity than buses
The plan also outlines future rail transport connections to Paljassaare
The draft also envisions utilizing trains as public transport
such as in the Kopli freight station development area
where space has been reserved for high-capacity rail transit and a station near Telliskivi tänav
Even more ambitious rail transport plans are included
such as connecting major development areas to the city center via train
Lippus clarified that the plan considers rail as an option
with rapid transit corridors potentially accommodating buses in the future
"The entire comprehensive plan is driven by the need to focus on public transport," she noted
Regarding existing or former rail infrastructure
the plan specifies that several rail branches in development areas — such as the Kopli freight station
Meeruse and Bekker ports on the Kopli peninsula and the Volta and Krulli factory sites — are being or will be partially or fully removed
the primary rail network up to the Kopli peninsula will be preserved
Lippus noted that the area intended for public use will be part of the Putukaväil project
"It is partially owned by private developers and partially by Estonian Railways
The goal is for Putukaväil to start near Telliskivi tänav
Putukaväil itself will turn toward Puhangu tänav
but one rail line will extend to Paljassaare near Hundipea," Lippus explained
The comprehensive plan also identifies potential for developing short-distance ferry services
to connect the district's coastal port areas (such as Katariina Quay
Noblessner and Linnahall) with the city center and other neighborhoods or districts
Existing streets could not facilitate more traffic
The Põhja-Tallinn mobility study highlights that the district's current street network cannot handle additional traffic loads
The comprehensive plan aims to densify the street network to distribute traffic more evenly and ensure better access to neighborhoods and coastal development areas
Key infrastructure projects outlined in the plan include the Kopli-Sitsi-Tööstuse intersection
the Maleva tänav intersection and the street network in the Merimetsa area
Põhja puiestee and Rannamäe tee are slated for reconstruction to create a pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly connection between the Old Town
the port area and the Baltic Station/Telliskivi Creative City district
The comprehensive plan also allows for a multi-level solution to address the Põhja puiestee-Kalasadama tänav intersection if necessary
"The need for and feasibility of a multi-level intersection at this location should be carefully considered
taking into account heritage and environmental protection aspects
as well as improving convenient pedestrian connections between the Old Town and the sea," the plan notes
Põhja-Tallinn boasts 20 kilometers of coastline
much of which has historically been inaccessible due to port areas
The district has more ports than any other part of Tallinn
with most already opened to the public or undergoing redevelopment
"Since Kalamaja and Põhja-Tallinn as a whole have such extensive coastal areas that have been closed off until now
it's very important that this plan aims to open them up
the goal is to plan for their opening and ensure they are truly accessible to everyone," said Madle Lippus
open and mixed-use land is designated for areas such as Patarei Port
These areas will gradually make the waterfront accessible to residents
creating urban and residential environments along the coastline
The Vene-Balti Port at the tip of the Kopli Peninsula will remain a cargo and industrial port
the new comprehensive plan emphasizes preserving the natural shoreline at Kopli Lines (Kopli liinid)
Viruliiva Beach and the Kopli fishing village
the plan mentions relatively little about Stroomi Beach
one of Tallinn's largest and most popular beaches
"Stroomi is undoubtedly a very important part of Põhja-Tallinn
we need to think about it more thoroughly," Lippus noted

Two people died in an apartment fire in Põhja-Tallinn on Wednesday evening
the Alarm Center received a report of smoke in the stairwell of an apartment building on Maleva tänav in Põhja-Tallinn
Responding firefighters observed a small amount of smoke coming from the window of a third-floor apartment
Firefighters entered the building to evacuate residents trapped by the smoke on the upper floors and simultaneously entered the apartment where the fire had started
From the apartment directly above the fire
The severely injured firefighters were immediately transported to the hospital
The Rescue Board has informed the injured firefighters' families and is providing support to both their families and their team
The cause of the fire and the tragic incident is under investigation

the new modern building of Maasikas Kindergarten (Vasara 18) was officially opened
The new facility accommodates 240 children in 12 groups
with a total project cost exceeding €9.4 million
Mayor Jevgeni Ossinovski stated at the opening of the new Maasikas kindergarten building that creating additional kindergarten places in the rapidly growing district of Põhja-Tallinn is essential
we ensure that more families have the opportunity to enroll their children in a kindergarten close to home
This provides future generations with access to quality early education near their homes
laying a strong foundation for their future studies," Ossinovski added
Deputy Mayor Viljar Jaamu stated that Tallinn is committed to ensuring every child has access to a modern and supportive learning environment
“Maasikas Kindergarten exemplifies how we create facilities that prioritize children’s safety
The new building offers versatile spaces for activities both indoors and outdoors
Tallinn continues to work towards providing every child with an environment that meets contemporary standards and lays a strong foundation for the future,” said Jaamu
Maasikas Kindergarten was established on March 1
as an in-house kindergarten for the Balti Laevaremonditehas (a shipbuilding company)
it has been part of Tallinn's network of municipal preschool institutions under the city's Education Department
The previous six-group building no longer met modern requirements
The new L-shaped two-story building features 12 group rooms
each with direct access to the outdoor area
Põhja-Tallinn District Governor Külli Tammur highlighted that Maasikas Kindergarten is more than just a new building
“This is a place where every child is provided with a safe and supportive environment to learn
and grow while feeling cared for and valued,” said Tammur
The group rooms are designed in light tones

Authorities have been unable to provide a swift solution to unpleasant odors which tend to hang over parts of the Kopli peninsula in Põhja-Tallinn
though longer-term the situation looks a little more hopeful
For years many years residents in the area of the Kopli peninsula
from the Kopli liinid wooden houses to the newly developed Noblessner neighborhood
have been blighted by strong odors often permeating the air
The smell is put down to fuel-handling companies operating on the Paljassaare peninsula – where the commercial Kopli port is also located
Local residents have noted that the unpleasant odor mainly spreads at night
and at the weekends – though this may also be simply the times when they are more likely to notice the pollution or to be at home at all
head of the Environmental Board's climate and ambient air bureau
said however that nothing illegal was going on
He said: "Several of the sources of this disturbance are companies dealing with various fuels
All these companies have been issued environmental permits which specify various legally defined limits they must not exceed
and have not detected any exceeding of these limits."
Local residents have also set up a "Põhja-Tallinn haiseb" ("Põhja-Tallinn stinks") Facebook group
which has seen a surge in complaining posts in recent days
"This has been going on for about 10 to 12 years
"Põhja-Tallinn haiseb" group moderator said
acknowledging that it's difficult to prove the smell's health hazards
The Environmental Board (Keskkonnaamet) says it is well aware of the concerns of Põhja-Tallinn residents
Mägi said his authority gets complaints from Põhja Tallinn "continuously."
"Depending on the season and wind direction
"We have not detected anything toxic through our measurements
which means it has not exceeded the established limits," he went on
The problem is also exacerbated by the high prices of new builds in the area
Though added that both legal solutions – reducing permissible emissions – and relocating companies which set up prior to the area undergoing a gentrification process
Meelis Mägi said: "Detail plans have actually been initiated for that area
envisioning different activities in the locations of these companies
Once these plans are implemented by the developer and local government
we can definitely say that such odor disturbances will no longer occur there."

The armed conflict between Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) is one of the longest running in modern history
Learning more about the roots causes of violence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Israel is important to help us prevent future violations and for the respect of International Humanitarian Law
Both international human rights law and international humanitarian law are fully applicable to the Occupied Palestinian Territories
Outside of the present conflict international human rights law is applicable in Israel
where Palestinians also live under a system of apartheid
This Human Rights Education blog can help build your knowledge and understanding of the roots of the conflict and it provides links to additional education materials and a free online course if you wish to continue your learning
The present situation started with the surprise attack on Israel on 7 October 2023
in which Hamas and other armed groups killed at least 1,200 people and took over 200 hostages
But it is important to remember that one of the reasons for this conflict is Israel’s apartheid system against Palestinians living in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories and against Palestinian refugees
and the inhumane acts committed by Israeli authorities with the purpose of creating this system and keeping it in place
This conflict’s roots go beyond October 2023
with a long history of violations of human rights and international humanitarian law
Amnesty International has documented Israel’s system of oppression and domination against Palestinians
which it considers to be a violation of international law
“Apartheid” refers to an institutionalized regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over another
and the denial of the right of return to Palestinian refugees
The term ‘Apartheid’ originally referred to a political system formally introduced in South Africa in 1948 by the National Party
where a regime of white minority rulers declared themselves officially superior to the majority of Black and other South Africans
and then proceeded to oppress and dominate them on the basis of race
South Africa’s apartheid system officially ended in the mid-1990s
but that doesn’t mean apartheid didn’t or isn’t happening elsewhere
Apartheid is a series of human rights violations in the form of “inhuman acts committed for the purpose of establishing and maintaining domination by one racial group of persons over any other racial group of persons… and systematically oppressing them”
Three main treaties that prohibit or explicitly criminalize apartheid are: 1
The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) of 1965 2
The International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid of 1973 (Apartheid Convention)
The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) of 1998 3 Apartheid is a violation of public international law
It constitutes both a system (formed of laws
policies and practices) and a crime (specific acts)
Racial discrimination is a key element of the crime of apartheid
and manifests differently but clearly across different contexts where apartheid takes place
South Africa: The term ‘Apartheid’ originally referred to a political system formally introduced in South Africa in 1948 by the National Party
Myanmar: Where the Rohingya people in Myanmar have been trapped in a vicious system of state-sponsored
institutionalized discrimination and racially based restrictions in law
“Caged without a roof” How do these systems impact the lives of people in practice
For Amnesty to determine whether the crime of apartheid has been committed
it examines all elements of international law defining the crime
supported by clear and compelling evidence
Amnesty’s research shows that Israeli authorities are enforcing a system of apartheid against Palestinians in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories
and against Palestinian refugees and their descendants
Amnesty’s report “Israel’s apartheid against Palestinians: Cruel system of domination and crime against humanity” documents how Israel treats Palestinians as a separate and inferior racial group
segregating and oppressing them wherever it can exert control over their rights
Fragment and conquer: Discrimination and segregation describe the system which keeps Palestinians separated from each other in distinct territorial
Israel has adopted a policy of prohibiting Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza from gaining status in Israel or East Jerusalem through marriage
Sumaia is Palestinian but was born and raised in Lod
in 1998 and he moved to live with her in Lod
Sumaia and her husband began the process of applying for family unification
The family unification process took 18 years
during which the couple lived in fear and anxiety
Sumaia told Amnesty: “The government is controlling every detail of our lives
One of the most extreme cases was when they arrested my husband in 2004 while I was giving birth to one of my daughters…while I was in the delivery room
Dispossession of land and property: Decades of discriminatory land and property ownership rules and seizures
home demolitions and forced evictions by Israeli authorities
The Israeli government used certain discriminatory laws to take land from Palestinians in the Negev/Naqab area
even though Bedouins make up 35% of the population in the Southern District
they are only allowed to live in 1% of the area
Deprivation of economic & social rights: Israel’s total blockade of Gaza since 2007 means Palestinians are cut off and facing severe restrictions on movement and availability of goods and resources
essentially isolating the area and the population
Abdul Nasser Al-Yazji was just two years old when he died on 28 August 2020 in the Gaza Strip
he was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma cervical spine
His parents tried to get him to a hospital in East Jerusalem to receive specialist treatment
but Israeli authorities never granted them a permit to leave in time
Segregation and control: A system of discriminatory laws and policies that keep Palestinians restricted to enclaves – subjected to several measures that control their lives – and segregated
the government of Israel began constructing a fence/wall in and around the West Bank
The route has meant further appropriation of Palestinian land and the separation and segregation of Palestinian communities
the International Court of Justice advised that the barrier was illegal
The ongoing conflict and humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza stresses the critical importance of international humanitarian law in protecting civilians and other at-risk people during hostilities
A global plea for an immediate ceasefire resonates around the world
calling for all parties to halt the violence and safeguard human lives
Everyone involved in the conflict needs to follow and respect its rules
including state and non-state armed groups
Humanitarian assistance must be guaranteed to those in need
The whole world needs to keep an eye on the situation
stepping in when needed to make sure international humanitarian law rules are followed
to stop things from getting worse for the everyday people living through it

the Tallinn city government is planning to build new schools
with priority given to the construction of new basic schools in the city districts of Põhja-Tallinn
Tallinn is relying on population forecasts prepared by demographers at the University of Tartu
which project that the capital's population will continue to grow — driven by immigration — for at least the next 15 years
The largest influx of residents in the near future is expected in Põhja-Tallinn
The planned new basic schools aim to alleviate the shortage of student places in these districts
A study completed in 2023 by human geographers at the University of Tartu shows that over the next 15 years
population growth will be fastest in three areas of Tallinn: the City Center
The city's school network is being developed in line with these forecasts
Deputy Mayor for Education Aleksei Jašin said that Põhja-Tallinn is currently experiencing the most acute shortage of school places
Põhjatähe Basic School will open its doors in Põhja-Tallinn
which is being reconstructed into a school
has already reached its topping-out milestone and will be ready this fall to accommodate 648 students
The school will initially open for lower grades and will gradually expand into a full basic school
there's very active construction underway in the Manufaktuuri
we'll also be talking about the Hundipea development
This educational institution is forward-looking and addresses the growth of Põhja-Tallinn," Jašin said
a new basic school is planned to open on Martsa tänav in Lasnamäe
the school would have four parallel classes per grade and accommodate 850 students
"This investment and the new school are eagerly awaited by six schools in Lasnamäe that currently rely on temporary modular classrooms to deal with space shortages
several Lasnamäe schools are still operating in two shifts," he noted
The new school will be located near the border of Lasnamäe and Pirita-Kose and could also serve children from the Pirita-Kose area
The city government is currently preparing to launch an architectural competition for the Martsa tänav school
A recently approved detailed spatial plan in the Pikaliiva area of Haabersti also includes provisions for a new basic school and other educational institutions
"There is a dire need there as well for both kindergarten and school places
We hope to approve the detailed plan this year
which would allow us to move forward with an architectural competition
as Tallinn organizes one for all completely new buildings," the deputy mayor explained
forecasts show that Tallinn's population will continue to grow steadily over the next 15 years
While the fastest growth is expected in the City Center
there are districts where the population is projected to either decline or remain stable
a kindergarten — or possibly the upper secondary (high school) level of a school — may have to be closed in the coming decade," Jašin said
Accessibility option changes are applied instantly.
According to city planners and demographers, the population of Põhja-Tallinn is projected to grow by about 40,000 people over the next decade. This increase will drive the need for new school and kindergarten places. Estimates indicate that 1,200 primary school places and 670 kindergarten places will be needed in Tallinn.
Take a look at this regular POJO class with just three fields: name
It has elements that are common to POJO classes: getters
It took us 59 lines of code just to implement this simple class with three fields
but remember that code is read much more often that it is written
So what is even worse than the sheer number of lines it takes to represent this simple concept is that the code fails to clearly communicate the implementation’s intent
How long will it take for you to answer these questions:
It’s not impossible to get these answers, but it is much harder than it should be. The signal-to-noise-ratio is just too low
The situation gets even worse if we need to implement the builder pattern
we need to maintain similar boilerplate for one more class – roughly doubling the amount of borderline useless code
we have to update both the builder and the POJO class in multiple places
This makes it is easy to miss something and introduce a bug
Gladly there is a better way. Lombok is a library that allows us to define POJO classes using a set of straightforward
These annotations specify if a particular field should have getter/setter
if it should participate in equals/hashCode/toString methods
Lombok has been around for a few years and has been used in many commercial and open source projects
just add the following dependency to your pom.xml file:
After this, your Lombok code will compile without issues, but if you are using an IDE you will be in trouble. Since Lombok annotations generate new code (see below for how Lombok works), the IDE should be aware what methods are implicitly added by what annotation. Fortunately, there are several plugins for different IDEs, so you can pick your favorite
If you use Intellij IDEA, you need to download a third-party plugin for Lombok support. If you use Eclipse, you need to download the lombok.jar and just execute it. It will install the Eclipse plugin. For NetBeans, you need the same JAR and have to enable annotation processing
Now we are ready to improve our code with Lombok
Lombok provides a few basic annotations to define if a particular field should have an accessor method or if it should be used in equals/hashCode/toString methods:
@EqualsAndHashCode and @ToString instruct Lombok to generate equals
and toString methods that will use all fields in the class
@AllArgsConstructor will create a constructor that has as many arguments as there are fields in the class
@Getter/@Setter annotations are applied to every field and will create getters and setters
Now we can use this class just as a regular POJO class:
If you don’t want an annotation to use all fields
you can provide an optional parameter that specifies what fields should be used for generating a method
So if we do not want to use the age field in the toString method you can do it like this:
I would argue this code is already much better than what we’ve started with
What about these repetitive @Getter/@Setter annotations
It’s handy to use them like this if you need to expose only a couple of fields in your class
but if you need to generate accessors for all your fields
Lombok allows using these annotations on the class level
If @Getter/@Setter annotations are used on the class level Lombok will generate getters and setters for all fields in the class
This does not change the behavior of the class
I argued that builders add another level of boilerplate
Lombok turns the exercise of writing a builder into a one-liner
just add the @Builder annotation on top of a class
and you will have a builder with a fluid interface at your disposal:
Now we can create an instance of our class using a builder:
but what about this repetitive set of annotations
and it is still cumbersome to use the same annotations again and again
Lombok provides two annotations that can make this even simpler:
@Data and @Value annotations got their names from so-called data classes and value classes. Data classes are mutable classes that expose their fields through getters and setters. Value classes on the other hand
are immutable and usually have no logic except equals
So we can rewrite our class with just two annotations:
but it also conveys the meaning of this code much better
It is clear that this class has three fields
all of them are used in hashCode/equals/toString methods
what if you need to define a custom getter or setter
What if you need to add a custom boundaries checking for the age value
Lombok has quite a straightforward behavior in this case: If a method Lomobok is going to generate is already in the class
it never overrides your methods and only adds new methods to a class
It turns out that it relies on one official Java standard and one huge hack
But before we come to that we have to understand the Java compiler a little better. During compilation, it does some heavy lifting and converts the source code into a tree structure called abstract syntax tree (AST)
An AST contains all information about the original code such as classes
the compiler performs various checks and transformations and then uses the resulting AST to generate the final bytecode instructions
Based in this, Java 6 has introduced the Pluggable Annotation Processing API (standardized by JSR 269), which allows Java libraries to execute custom code during compilation. The standard’s original intention is that libraries would only inspect ASTs, particularly annotations, and use them to implement custom code validations or generation of new source files.
But Lombok creators figured out that they can use this feature differently. By using a non-public API, they managed to modify ASTs provided by the compiler to add new methods, fields, and even classes during the compilation phase. The compiler then uses this modified AST to generate bytecode for Lombok-generated methods and fields as if they were written by a developer.
Not every dependency added to the project stays there forever and sometimes we need to get rid of one to move forward. Fortunately Lombok easily allows us to revert all “lomboked” classes to vanilla Java using a process called delombok. To do this you need to call the delombok command provided in the lombok.jar:
This generates the source code for all the methods and classes Lombok usually spins during compilation and writes it to the specified folder.
You can even add delombok task to your Ant script as well:
The latter method is handy if you want to keep your code as is but need to generate JavaDoc for the code with Lombok annotations.
The primary advantage of using Lombok in Java is that it helps to reduce boilerplate code, which is a repetitive code that appears with little alteration in several locations. Lombok provides annotations that can be used to replace boilerplate code related to getter and setter methods, constructors, and more. This makes the code cleaner, easier to read, and maintain.
Lombok provides the @NonNull annotation, which can be used to automatically generate a null-check statement for us. If the field is null, a NullPointerException will be thrown. This helps in ensuring that our code is safe from unexpected NullPointerExceptions.
Yes, Lombok annotations can be used with all major IDEs like Eclipse, IntelliJ IDEA, and NetBeans. However, to use Lombok in these IDEs, you need to install the Lombok plugin. This plugin will enable the IDE to recognize and process the Lombok annotations.
Lombok provides various annotations like @Slf4j, @Log4j, etc., which can be used to replace the boilerplate code related to logging. By using these annotations, we can directly log messages without the need to create a logger instance.
Yes, it is possible to customize the behavior of Lombok annotations. For example, the @Data annotation generates getters and setters, equals, hashCode, and toString methods. But if we want to exclude a field from the generated methods, we can use the @EqualsAndHashCode.Exclude or @ToString.Exclude annotations.
Lombok provides annotations like @NoArgsConstructor, @RequiredArgsConstructor, and @AllArgsConstructor to generate constructors. @NoArgsConstructor generates a constructor with no parameters, @RequiredArgsConstructor generates a constructor with required fields (final fields and fields with @NonNull annotation), and @AllArgsConstructor generates a constructor with all class fields.
Yes, Lombok annotations can be used in production code. However, it’s important to note that using Lombok may lead to issues with code readability and debugging, especially for developers who are not familiar with Lombok. Therefore, it’s recommended to use Lombok judiciously and ensure that all team members are comfortable with it.
Lombok provides the @Getter and @Setter annotations to generate getter and setter methods. By default, these annotations generate public getter and setter methods. However, we can customize the access level by passing an AccessLevel argument to these annotations.
The @Cleanup annotation in Lombok is used to ensure that a given resource is automatically cleaned up before the code execution paths exit your method. This helps in avoiding resource leaks without the need to write explicit finally blocks.
Lombok provides the @ToString annotation to generate the toString method. By default, this annotation includes all non-static fields. But we can exclude a field from the generated method by using the @ToString.Exclude annotation.

Mysterious metallic fragments washing up on a Põhja-Tallinn beach have left local and state agencies scratching their heads
While similar episodes have blighted the area before – mainly the Paljassaare peninsula and Pikakari beach in particular – the origins of the debris remain unsolved
Authorities say that the episode is unlikely to jeopardize Pikakari beaches' international Blue Flag status
Many metallic pieces (see gallery below) have washed up on the popular beach in Põhja-Tallinn (North Tallinn) or remain in the sea nearby
The quantity of these aluminum-like fragments varies with wind speed and direction
Frequent visitors beach-goers strangers to the items
which have been observed in large quantities in previous years
and was surprised by how many there were."
Even as swimmers have long noticed the metal debris and shared pictures on social media
the Põhja-Tallinn District Government and the Environmental Agency (Keskonnaamet) only became aware of the issue thanks to an "Aktuaalne Kaamera" report made last Wednesday
but this is relatively negative news for us," Aare Koll
a specialist with the district administration
"We should act relatively quickly," he continued in the same vein
"We will approach the Environmental Agency in respect of the next steps and identify the root cause
The first opportunity will be on August 28
when divers will be assisting us in assessing the situation," Koll
Ahead of that and in collaboration with beach maintenance crews and the Environmental Agency
the district government will start collecting the metal pieces from the seawater from today
the agency remains uncertain about the cause of this mass marine debris
head of the Environmental Agency's Harju and Rapla counties office
I believe that these are remnants of metal that entered the sea years ago
which the sea is only now washing ashore due to the wind and the waves." Tehva was unable to specify what kind of metal it is or its origin
"Whether it fell off a passing vessel or was caused by an incident in the area is not known."
Pikakari beach is internationally recognized at Blue Flag quality and has an eco-label too
while the quality of the swimming water is regularly monitored throughout the summer season
there is no reason to believe that the metal in the water affects that quality
these same metal fragments were talked about
and it is more likely fragments from the past that the sea is now washing ashore," he reitereated
"Diving work is needed to see what lies on the bottom
It is currently unknown where exactly it comes from and how much more there may be," he added
The Kopli peninsula has a very mixed land use confined in a relatively small area
Near to Pikakari beach is the Paljassaare special conservation area with its nature trail
yet the industrial Paljassaare and Bekker ports are also close by

After the first week of games in Section 1
there was some movement from our preseason rankings
The John Jay-East Fishkill boys soccer and boys cross country teams climbed up the list with impressive early showings
This ranking is reflective only of the local teams participating in fall sports this season
The Admirals opened the season with a convincing 4-1 win over Mahopac
exacting a half measure of revenge against the team that stunned them in the sectional semifinals last year
Perhaps even more encouraging for Arlington was the play of Kaylee Stowell
An early reminder was issued to all observers in the first meet of this truncated season: Yep, they're still really good

A map of streets Tallinn City Government will remove snow from this winter was unveiled on Tuesday
The majority are in Kesklinn and Põhja-Tallinn
The snow clearing map shows which sidewalks the city has promised to clean across the capital
The city chose to expand its role in Kesklinn and Põhja-Tallinn these districts have high amounts of pedestrian traffic
Deputy Mayor Pärtel-Peeter Pere (Reform) said at a press conference on Tuesday
and move around in Kesklinn and Põhja-Tallinn
have received less attention in snow removal compared to others," said Pere
The map is preliminary and does not include information about city-owned schools
Pere stressed snow will be cleared from the sidewalks at schools
The Old Town is not marked on the map as the area is considered an outdoor area where pedestrians can move freely on all streets
The city already removes snow from this area
Pere said the council would keep all sidewalks free of snow
but earlier this month admitted this would not be possible
"I am sincerely very sorry that I have made this expectation so high in people," he said at the beginning of October
However, this winter, Tallinn will clear snow from an additional 60 kilometers of sidewalks in Kesklinn and Põhja-Tallinn, the council said
The city also promises stricter supervision of clearing activities to ensure the correct and timely removal
Tallinn Urban Environment and Public Works Department's contractors are responsible for clearing the main roads and larger areas
Snow is cleared from smaller streets by local contractors
The city also clears sidewalks next to high-traffic roads
which are essential for pedestrian safety since walking on the road itself is not safe
The Urban Environment and Public Works Department reminds citizens that many sidewalks are the responsibility of the property owner adjacent to the road
who must also ensure ice removal if necessary
granite grit with a grain size of 2-6 mm may be used
The city provides free granite grit to apartment associations and private homeowners

Two of the largest reservoirs in the United States are at dangerously low levels due to the climate crisis and overconsumption of water
which could affect water and electricity supply for millions in six western states and Mexico
the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) warned on Tuesday.
Lake Mead and Lake Powell are currently at their lowest levels ever and are at risk of reaching “dead pool status”
meaning that the water in the dams would be so low it could no longer flow downstream and power hydroelectric power stations.
“The conditions in the American west, which we're seeing around the Colorado River basin, have been so dry for more than 20 years that we're no longer speaking of a drought,” said Lis Mullin Bernhardt, an ecosystems expert at UNEP
“We refer to it as ‘aridification’ - a new very dry normal.”
was created in the 1930s by the construction of the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River
It is the largest artificial body of water in the US.
is the second largest and was created in the 1960s with the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam.
The reservoirs provide water and electricity to tens of millions of people in the states of Nevada
as well as irrigation water for agriculture.
“While regulating and managing water supply and demand are essential in both the short and long term
climate change is at the heart of this issue,” said Maria Morgado
UNEP’s Ecosystems Officer in North America
“In the long term we need to address the root causes of climate change as well as water demands.”
most major disasters – 90 per cent – were caused by floods
people in affected areas will increasingly depend on groundwater.
increases in water demand – due to growing populations
for example – have compounded climate change impacts such as reduction in precipitation as well as temperature rises
which lead to increased evaporation of surface water and
“We are talking about a 20-year period of drought-like conditions with an ever-increasing demand on water,” said Ms
and particularly in the Lake Powell and Lake Mead region
What’s happening in the American west is part of a wider trend affecting hundreds of millions of people across the world who are impacted by climate change
as drought and desertification are quickly becoming the new normal everywhere – from the US to Europe and Africa.
climate and water hazards have accounted for 50 per cent of all disasters
some 2.3 billion people globally face water stress annually
This information is included in a compendium titled Drought in Numbers, published in May by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)
Drought is among several factors that impact land degradation
Between 20 to 40 per cent of the world’s land is classified as degraded
affecting half the global population and impacting croplands
UNEP is among the lead agencies for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration
aimed at countering climate change and halting biodiversity.
The Decade runs through 2030, which is also the same timeline for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
With 161 votes in favour, and eight abstentions*, the UN General Assembly adopted a historic resolution on Thursday, declaring access to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, a universal human right.
The Criteria API provides a type-safe way to define queries programmatically
you can use it to select a set of entity attributes and map each result set record to a Plain Old Java Object (POJO)
Let’s take a look at one of the recipes included in the book. It uses the Criteria API to programmatically define a query that selects a set of database columns and returns them as POJOs. To get the most out of this post, you should already be familiar with Hibernate’s basic concepts
JPQL supports constructor expressions to select POJOs instead of entities or scalar values
You can use a similar constructor expression with the Criteria API as you use in JPQL queries
The definition of the CriteriaQuery follows the same approach as you use to select entities
You first need to get a CriteriaBuilder instance from the EntityManager
It’s a factory class that helps you to define different parts of your query
You then create a CriteriaQuery instance that is the root of the object graph that represents your query
I recommend providing the return type of your query as a parameter to the createQuery method
It creates a typed instance of the CriteriaQuery interface
I want to select AuthorValue objects in this example and
provide AuthorValue.class as the parameter
I use the Author entity as the root of the query
Then you can define the projection of your query
it’s a call of the AuthorValue constructor
The construct method of the CriteriaBuilder allows you to define constructor calls
Call this method using the class that Hibernate instantiates as the first parameter and an optional list of Selections that are used as constructor parameters
I use the JPA Metamodel class Author_ to reference the firstName and lastName attributes of the Author entity
If you’re not familiar with the JPA Metamodel
take a look at the Hibernate tip How to reference entity attributes in a type-safe way
which provides a comfortable and type-safe way to reference entity attributes
The definition of the WHERE clause is optional
If you want to select all records from the database
you can skip this block and execute your query
You can see an example of a WHERE clause definition in the How to select entities with a CriteriaQuery chapter
That’s all you need to do to define the CriteriaQuery
You first need to call the createQuery method of the EntityManager with your CriteriaQuery
This method call returns the same TypedQuery interface as you use in your JPQL queries
You can use it to set bind parameter values or to paginate the query result
I don’t use any bind parameters in this example and therefore
you need to call the getResultList method on the TypedQuery interface to execute the query and retrieve a List of AuthorValue objects
I referenced the firstName and lastName attributes in the constructor call definition
As you can see in the following log messages
Hibernate used these reference to generates an SQL query that selects the firstName and lastName columns from the Author table
You can find a download link for a project with executable test cases for this Hibernate tip in the book
If you don’t want to create a POJO to represent your query result, you can also select a set of scalar values
I show you how to do that in the chapter How to select multiple scalar values in a CriteriaQuery
And if you want to use the Criteria API in your project, you should also have a look at the JPA metamodel
It provides a great way to create queries in a type-safe way
I show you how to use and generate the required classes in the chapter How to reference entity attributes in a type-safe way
The Criteria API provides a type-safe option to define queries programmatically
you can use it to select a set of database columns and let Hibernate map each result set record to a POJO
CriteriaQuery is a type of query mechanism in Java that allows you to construct complex database queries using an object-oriented API
This approach provides a more flexible and dynamic way to build queries
making it easier to adapt your code to changing requirements
It also helps to prevent SQL injection attacks
as the query structure is defined programmatically rather than through string manipulation
you first need to obtain a CriteriaBuilder instance from the EntityManager
The CriteriaBuilder interface serves as a factory for all criteria queries
Here’s a simple example:CriteriaBuilder cb = em.getCriteriaBuilder();CriteriaQuery<YourEntity> cq = cb.createQuery(YourEntity.class);
To select specific columns in a CriteriaQuery
you can use the multiselect() method of the CriteriaBuilder interface
This method takes a variable number of Selection arguments and returns a CompoundSelection instance
Here’s an example:CriteriaBuilder cb = em.getCriteriaBuilder();CriteriaQuery<Tuple> cq = cb.createTupleQuery();Root<YourEntity> root = cq.from(YourEntity.class);cq.multiselect(root.get("column1")
You can add conditions to your CriteriaQuery using the where() method of the CriteriaQuery interface
which you can create using the various predicate methods of the CriteriaBuilder interface
Here’s an example:CriteriaBuilder cb = em.getCriteriaBuilder();CriteriaQuery<YourEntity> cq = cb.createQuery(YourEntity.class);Root<YourEntity> root = cq.from(YourEntity.class);cq.where(cb.equal(root.get("column1")
You can order the results of your CriteriaQuery using the orderBy() method of the CriteriaQuery interface
This method takes a variable number of Order instances
which you can create using the asc() and desc() methods of the CriteriaBuilder interface
Here’s an example:CriteriaBuilder cb = em.getCriteriaBuilder();CriteriaQuery<YourEntity> cq = cb.createQuery(YourEntity.class);Root<YourEntity> root = cq.from(YourEntity.class);cq.orderBy(cb.asc(root.get("column1")));
You can execute your CriteriaQuery using the createQuery() method of the EntityManager interface
This method takes a CriteriaQuery instance and returns a TypedQuery instance
which you can then execute using the getResultList() or getSingleResult() method
Here’s an example:CriteriaBuilder cb = em.getCriteriaBuilder();CriteriaQuery<YourEntity> cq = cb.createQuery(YourEntity.class);Root<YourEntity> root = cq.from(YourEntity.class);TypedQuery<YourEntity> query = em.createQuery(cq);List<YourEntity> results = query.getResultList();
You can join tables using the join() method of the Root or Join interface
This method takes the name of the attribute representing the relationship to the other entity
Here’s an example:CriteriaBuilder cb = em.getCriteriaBuilder();CriteriaQuery<YourEntity> cq = cb.createQuery(YourEntity.class);Root<YourEntity> root = cq.from(YourEntity.class);Join<YourEntity
OtherEntity> join = root.join("otherEntity");
You can group results using the groupBy() method of the CriteriaQuery interface
This method takes a variable number of Expression instances
which you can create using the get() method of the Root or Path interface
Here’s an example:CriteriaBuilder cb = em.getCriteriaBuilder();CriteriaQuery<YourEntity> cq = cb.createQuery(YourEntity.class);Root<YourEntity> root = cq.from(YourEntity.class);cq.groupBy(root.get("column1"));
You can use aggregate functions like count
and max with CriteriaQuery using the corresponding methods of the CriteriaBuilder interface
Here’s an example:CriteriaBuilder cb = em.getCriteriaBuilder();CriteriaQuery<Long> cq = cb.createQuery(Long.class);Root<YourEntity> root = cq.from(YourEntity.class);cq.select(cb.count(root));
exceptions can be handled using a try-catch block
The most common exception you might encounter is the PersistenceException
which is a runtime exception that wraps all failures that occur within the persistence mechanism
Here’s an example:try { // Your CriteriaQuery code here} catch (PersistenceException e) { // Handle exception here}

Although many of these accessible structures have been implemented in years past
those who rely on these accommodations argue there is still an urgency for certain improvements
a freshmen at Dutchess Community College and Poughkeepsie resident
has recently gained tremendous support from the college and DCC administration for her proposed smartphone app idea: an app that allows the users to open a handicapped door with their phone
functioning through some sort of transmission between the phone and door
as opposed to having to physically press the handicapped button for access
Jones was diagnosed with Type 2 Spinal Muscular Atrophy
a disease which affects the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord and leads to debilitating muscle weakness
she has used an electric wheelchair to move around
while relying on different structures and accommodations to access buildings
JULIE'S JUNGLE: Play area offers accessibility, fun to Hopewell Junction
she explained her inspiration for the app idea
which had its roots in a desire to improve building accessibility — specifically
an improvement in the usefulness of the handicapped door buttons
“Rarely are the buttons in a place where people who actually need to use them can reach them,” Jones said
They’re never really in a good spot where you would be able to hit it.”
along with conversation with her mother about a possible solution
the idea was sparked: an app that would enable users to open a handicapped door from their phone
“We figured everything else is on your phone nowadays
Yet with no experience in the fields of engineering and computer science
she had little knowledge on where to start
Jones attended the DCC Foundation Community’s Bridge to Future Gala at The Grandview
Karen Schroeder Travato received the Alumni Hall of Fame Award for her excellence in the field of engineering
Jones approached her with the idea for the app
hoping to gain some information on where to start
“She was in a wheelchair for a few months due to a health issue and could relate to the idea.”
who offered the full support of the college
along with the use of all its resources and help from different departments
“This is a perfect example of applied learning and a testament to the collaborative and inclusive environment that exists at Dutchess Community College,” Edington said
and I’m thrilled she shared with us her vision to enhance accessibility on campus through innovation
Those involved in developing the app are excited to be spearheading such an important project
and we’re looking forward to implementing the technology in the near future.”
After a meeting with Engineering Department head Mark Courtney
IT coordinator Bill Wolfson and professor Dan Barbuto
it was established that the DCC campus would be an ideal testing site for the proposed app
Jones said they agreed that engineering student Jacob Ernst would take over the project and develop a hardware and software app solution
“My end goal for the app is to have a single button the user pushes in the app such that whatever door the user is in front of will open — so that the user will not have to select from a long list of buildings and doors,” Ernst explained
Since the app remains early on in the developmental stage
much of the technical information is subject to change
The team hopes to have a functioning prototype implemented on campus by the start of the fall semester
Jones has always seemed to me an individual of incredible kindness
I always saw a relentless mind and an unbridled imagination. To me
the recent success of her proposed idea came as no surprise
where she intends to study biomedical sciences with a minor in business administration
She said she hopes to extend her app to the Marist Campus as well
she seeks to provide a remedy to certain problems in accessibility
while also demonstrating how one idea can provide an enduring solution for years to come

What’s with our fascination with the ‘model diet’
Everything you need to know about the New Moon
The modelling industry has always had a strong hold over me
I have been mystified by the fashion and beauty models from magazines; reposting runway images on Tumblr and organising my favourite model-off-duty-looks into Instagram saved folders
This deep-seated infatuation extended to not just wanting to look like a model
The appeal wasn’t simply skin-deep and as a teenager
I was hungry to learn the ways I could achieve and sustain the model lifestyle I so desired
I naïvely held the belief that the key to emulating this lifestyle was to appropriate a model’s diet
intensely researching the number of calories
healthy fats and superfoods I was to consume to grow a foot taller
It’s worrying to think back on my laser focus on models’ dietary habits
Not only because dieting did nothing good for my growing and hormonal teenage body and mind
but because of my complete oversight of the actual humans behind these diets
I know that I’m not alone in equating models to their diets
articles and posts that continue to be published still today carrying titles like ‘What I Eat in A Day as a Model’
It’s clear our society has a preoccupation with models’ eating habits
choosing to engage with these rather than their personalities and passions
(Editor’s note: This mindset is one of the reasons we started our Just One Thing series
where we ask young models what they care about
Former model and now YouTuber, Phoebe Pojo, is flipping this unhealthy obsession on its head. Her channel, Models That Eat
is described as “a safe space for models to discuss their relationship with food and their bodies”
The channel shares open and thoughtful conversations between Pojo and a variety of professional models
as they talk about their individual experiences within the industry over a hearty meal
Models that Eat appropriates our absurd cultural curiosity with models’ diets and uses it to give a platform to the professionals behind the plate
“Everyone is looking for the ‘model diet’ or ‘what is this supermodel eating?’ or ‘what does it take to be this type of model?’,” explains Pojo
so I hope that models watch my videos and see that their voices are important and they deserve to be heard.”
Pojo had noticed that models’ lifestyles — and specifically the way they eat — was highly sought-after content on the Internet
She also noticed the models who were candid about their diets were heavily criticised
Although audiences would be pressing models for their dietary tips and tricks
they were also quick to become harsh and critical
It’s this criticism that makes models reluctant to speak out
“Models are scared out of telling their truths about their diet,” she says
“It’s a subconscious trauma that makes them fearful of tainting their image by telling their side of the story.”
In an industry where one’s image defines one’s earning capacity
“I’ve had my friends talk to me about getting thousands of dollars dropped off contracts for gaining a centimetre on their hips.”
Such consequences understandably drive models away from being fully candid about their diets and lifestyles
If what you ate for dinner last night meant you might lose your job
Being signed to her first agency at age 13
Pojo has long been embedded in the industry
Growing up a model has allowed her to better notice the way the industry often runs on fear
“So many people are recruited young and begin internalising these messages young
it’s pretty difficult to navigate that space and not develop body dysmorphia,” admits Pojo
“Literally my entire teen life was building a brand out of my body.”
models are held to a different standard of eating; one where eating ‘regular’ portions of foods inevitably invites questions
“I just thought it was funny how people would question my diet because of my career,” says Pojo
Though she notes she didn’t let it get to her
“Me and my friends would eat a regular amount and at the time
her love of food and passion for positive change to kick start Models that Eat
a bit of a joke and light-hearted in concept”
One model even said my page helped them recover from an eating disorder,” explains Pojo
“It started dialogue that I didn’t necessarily understand
because I was on the other side because I felt like I had always been treated pretty well.”
Once she realised the true potential of the platform
Pojo began driving more important conversations about the industry
The aim was to inspire not only others to look at food in a less critical light
her Dine n Dash episodes truly achieve this
By establishing a comfortable setting with a delicious meal in a familiar space
Pojo guides her guests through trivial and dense subjects with ease
“Sometimes when people tell me devastating things
“I’m not smiling because I’m happy it happened
I’m smiling because I’m happy you’re talking about it.”
Pojo notes she will continue bringing more thoughtful discussion to the table
as an opportunity for fans to see models in a new light and to revisit their own relationships with food
When asked about what the future of Models That Eat looks like
“I get so psyched when I think about how many people I get to eat with in the future — there are so many new faces in the space that I want to talk to.”
Models that Eat demystifies modelling in such a nuanced and casual way
it becomes easy to see past the imagined lives of models we so covet on social media
Their passions and stories deserve far more attention than their diets
and Models that Eat makes this transference of attention feel effortless
Because — and this is something I had to learn the hard way — models are far more than what they eat

By Frances Ruth HarrisGOSHEN — Jeanne Ryan married her neighbor Stanley Dickel on May 23
right in the middle of her trial for animal cruelty
The two might end up in prison at the same time
Dickel is currently awaiting sentencing for a probation violation for removing a tracking device.Ryan of Argus Farm is charged with the deaths of 10 horses found last summer locked in a barn
Chief Assistant District Attorney Christopher Borek
until July 6 to file their post-trial memoranda
The judge said he would render a verdict on July 23
Sussman has been pinning the blame on Ryan's son
He grilled McSwigin and his then-girlfriend
about the dates and times they fed the horses
The two helped Ryan with chores but have said they stayed at Argus Farm only intermittently during that time
Sussman argued that McSwigin and Pohja were unable to recall even the correct years in their testimonies
and made a motion to have the charges against Ryan thrown out
Borek asked Dickel if he changed his testimony was to help his wife
since his grand jury testimony says he'd dug a hole in 2015 to bury a horse but didn't see the horse
Dickel said he didn't want anything to happen to Ryan
He said he found drug paraphernalia when cleaning McSwigin's room after McSwigin left the farm
he happened to go into the barn and found the dead horses
He said Ryan was unable to talk about them
McSwigin was supposed to be taking care of the horses but told Dickel he didn't like doing it
Dickel said.Borek cross-examined Dickel about his numerous DWIs
she said she'd retired from the New York City Police Department because of Lyme disease
Ryan said she told her son to feed the horses two flakes of hay
She said her son told her he put antifreeze in the beet pulp
she went to the barn to see the horses and found five of them dead
They were the horses that got the beet pulp
jumping on her back and trying to choke her
shortly after she discovered the dead horses
Horse owners and breeders attending the trial told The Chronicle some of their horses eat a whole bale of hay in one day
and that Ryan's horses were on a starvation diet.Ryan said she had spells of vertigo along with fainting and balancing problems beginning in fall 2016
She said she fell down a flight of steps and after that and couldn't walk to the barn
She depended on McSwigin for help with the horses
was portrayed in photographs that showed him emaciated and standing in a foot of manure among carcasses.Ryan said she thought Seamus looked okay when shown a picture of him just after he was rescued. She said did not see a problem with keeping Seamus in the barn with the carcasses and manure
She said she didn't notice any insects or maggots."Bugs were not crawling on Seamus," she said
Did she know Seamus was eating his own feces
She shrugged and said no.When shown one of Seamus' overgrown and infected hooves
Ryan seemed unmoved and said every horse has different requirements of care
Borek questioned her about her medical records
suggesting she retired to avoid an internal investigation by the New York City Police Department
He also said the hospital reported Ryan could walk with a "steady" gait when discharged
Ryan said she could walk only on even ground
and that the route to the barn from her house was uneven
She said she cared for the horses after her son left.Borek showed pictures of Ryan in Goshen during a period when Ryan said she couldn't walk
They showed her protesting in front of Legoland's office
Ryan said she did not harm her horses in any way
She fed them sufficient food and cared for them
Freehill admonished the courtroom midway through the day
telling spectators they had to be quiet and respectful or be removed

Eastside islander Charlie Ellis is a serious collector of amusing things
Whimsical things such as old vehicle license plates
the teeth and bones of marine creatures he's found along local waterways and paintings so amateurish they're almost fascinating
not humorless - because Charlie strikes me as being a lighthearted fellow who has a playful outlook on life
while he has a penchant for accumulating stuff to which other people have assigned little or no value
Charlie isn't a pack rat - what he collects is on display or in use at Pojo Point
his home on the marsh on the western side of Turner's Rock
I've always tried to cover the walls," he said when I visited him in late June
And so the exterior and interior walls of his house and of the three outbuildings he's constructed at Pojo Point are covered with stuff that he and his companion
as are the tops of the numerous tables inside the buildings and outside in the yard
It's a yard that is itself a display area in which Charlie has woven stuff he's found - including old signs; a huge
rusted ship's rudder; a large metal propeller from an aircraft that crashed along the Savannah River; and two cannons he created using abandoned lampposts for barrels - into a lyrical collage of castoff collectibles
"It's a collection of clutter - if I see it
a Savannah businessman and leader in public education for whom Charles Ellis Elementary School is named
Much of the stuff that's been collected has been recycled by Charlie
who has a knack for carpentry and woodworking that was passed along to him by his father
Charlie showed me a table he'd just finished
with the top made of shutters he'd found in a dumpster
is the location of one of his collections - license plates from every state in the union and the District of Columbia that are affixed - in alphabetical order - to the ceiling joists of the building
Charlie picked up the first 15(cq) or so of the plates while traveling
then went to a junkyard and found about 15 more
"Then I wrote letters to chambers of commerce in small towns," he said in relating how he fleshed out his collection by making requests for license plates
"I wrote them like a high school kid would write them
Another of his buildings - used by Julie as a studio where she paints - sits by the edge of the Bradley Creek marsh and bears a sign identifying it as the "Pojo Point Yacht Club." Charlie calls it "Margaritaville" and said of the one-room structure
which affords a splendid view of Dutch and Whitemarsh islands
"It's where we have our margaritas every night."
The third outbuilding has been dubbed "The Art Gallery," and it was built from materials from an old pump house that Charlie tore down
The one-room gallery also serves as a laundry room and houses a collection of what some might label primitive art or naïve art
was started a year ago by Charlie and Julie
"We go to garage sales and flea markets and places and buy this artwork," he said
which includes a paint-by-numbers scene of a boat dock
"The idea is that it's very amateurish and
the school that bears his grandfather's name
He spent much of his adult life - 27 years - in Atlanta
where he worked primarily as a real estate appraiser and also staged "big-time" women's tennis tournaments
he nourished his spirit of adventure by crossing the Atlantic in sailboats on four occasions and by climbing some of the world's highest mountains
He returned to Savannah a dozen years ago and settled at Pojo Point
which covers three acres of secluded high ground on Turner's Rock - a large hammock in the marsh between Wilmington and Whitemarsh islands - and was purchased by his parents in the late 1940s
is a Lowcountry name for the great blue heron
which in days past was considered a "po'" source of meat.)
"I figured I'd lived away from Savannah half my life
and I figured it was time to go home," he said
he's added on to the summer cottage his parents had built in 1950
such as old bottles; artwork that's much more sophisticated than that in the gallery
including a painting by Savannahian Myrtle Jones; and a table that's covered by prehistoric sharks' teeth and another that's the final resting place of numerous alligator skulls
Among the items gracing the porch of the house are some whale vertebrae
who has on display outdoors the complete skeleton of a manatee that he found alongside the Savannah River near Fort Jackson
The skeleton was just one of the things that caught my eye during my two hours at Pojo Point
and I'm sure there was a lot that I missed
"It's overwhelming," said Charlie of all his stuff while showing me around his house

District governors are appointed for a term that lasts until the end of the current city government's mandate
A lost young lynx was seen in a popular part of Põhja-Tallinn on Friday morning
caught on camera both on a restaurant patio on Kopli tänav and at Baltic Station (Balti jaam) itself
Anyone who sees the lynx is urged by the Rescue Board to avoid approaching the animal and call 112
When Anton Kostjuk first spotted the wild animal on the patio of Restaurant Ülo
directly opposite Baltic Station Market (Balti jaama turg)
he had doubts about whether it was a big cat or if it could really be a young lynx — and why a lynx would be sitting this far into a major city
but rescuers confirmed the animal was indeed a young lynx that had ended up lost in the Estonian capital
Shocked by the unexpected up-close sighting
the animal was also caught on film running around the adjacent Baltic Station
The Rescue Board tweeted about the Põhja-Tallinn lynx sighting on Friday afternoon
but could go on the move again once dark out
Residents of the area have been asked to keep a lookout
Anyone who sees the lynx is urged to avoid approaching the animal and call 112

The social and health care reform would have prevented what is set to be the largest outsourcing of health care services in Finland
a member of the Parliament’s Social Affairs and Health Committee
Sarkomaa is referring to a decision made by four municipalities to outsource the operations of the Central Hospital of Länsi-Pohja in Kemi to Mehiläinen
a leading private medical care provider in Finland
“This is clearly indicative of how bad it is for the development of our social and health care services that the care reform was delayed and neglected by the previous governments,” she says to Uusi Suomi
Simo and Tornio – on Monday announced they have decided to establish a joint venture with the private medical care provider in a bid to secure the operations of the Central Hospital of Länsi-Pohja
The municipalities have been concerned that the social
health care and regional government reform would lead to the services being relocated to Rovaniemi
Kemi was the last of the four municipalities to approve the outsourcing
its municipal council voting 22 for and 21 against the proposal on Monday
The joint venture is also set to provide special health care services for the municipalities of Tervola and Ylitornio
Talouselämä has reported that the computational value of the outsourcing agreement rises to over 1.1 billion euros as the joint venture would be responsible for providing health care services in the region until 2032
the Minister of Family Affairs and Social Services
“I’m very concerned about this,” she stated to Helsingin Sanomat on Tuesday
“The municipalities are about to tie themselves to a 15-year contract with very strict grounds for termination
It’ll be a very difficult situation for the county to be established
if one side of the county is locked to the current situation.”
