There were several cakes and baskets of fruits spread out and people gathered around
both public and forest department officials
Next to them were scores of elephants lined up in a row
The gathering was to celebrate the first birthday of Pori
a female elephant calf and the youngest at Kaziranga
who was among the elephants standing next to her mom Badhoi
This was inside the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve
“We have 67 departmental elephants and 44 private elephants who all assembled here today to celebrate Pori’s birthday
We took this chance as opportunity to do a health check-up of all the elephants,” said Sonali Ghosh
Director of the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve
occasionally coming close to people only to run back
Ghosh said referring to another calf who drew quite a bit of attention as he played pranks and disturbed everyone around
the calves drink only milk and after that they start eating grass
one of the mahouts there said as Goda Pani pestered him playfully from behind
people who gathered around sang the birthday song and all the elephants got their treat — sugarcane
Pori got bored of people and moved away to her mom and to play with Goda Pani
If a mother elephant goes on a safari or a patrol
Ghosh said explaining the routine and the training process
The main part of the training is where the elephants are given a bath as they love water
adding that it is a ritual to go to the nearby river where they have a bath
They later go back into the forest to get their food
which doesn’t happen anywhere else.” There are currently eight calves undergoing training
which is a mix of different established methods
The process of taking care of captive elephants is an age-old traditional system in Assam
There are several treaties on elephant care
It’s a tradition and it’s part of the culture of the people
a lot of tradition on how elephants are taken care of
we tried to showcase how the elephant and the mahout have this very special bond
no other place has which we have here in India
where humans take care of the elephants and the elephants consider them as family.”
Kaziranga is famous for its big five (animals)
Ghosh said they have the world’s largest population of the greater one-horned rhinoceros (2013 rhinos as per the count in 2022)
90% of the wild buffalo population numbering almost 3,000
a significant population of elephants and the Bengal tiger.
Kaziranga National Park is spread over 430 square kilometres interspersed with elephant-grass meadows
It is home to two-third of the world’s single-horned rhino population
The park was formed in 1908 on the recommendation of Mary Curzon
Kaziranga was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO and as the tiger population went up over time
Poaching was rampant earlier and some tough measures by the State government brought it down drastically and tourism saw huge increase
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma referred to this two days back while speaking at the Inland Waterways Development Council
He pointed out that Kaziranga remains an example for the turnaround from severe poaching to booming tourism
Ports and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal for initiating the measures to bring down poaching
“Every elephant has its own temperament and personality

who died after jumping off a rock into the water at a Pori Pori swimming hole on December 4
Jontae Christopher Alden pulled a Superman pose as he jumped from a rock and soared through the air over a natural pool in the Wairoa River
It would be the last thing the Tauranga 21-year-old did; his life was cut tragically short moments later
Jontae was unresponsive when his best friend
pulled him from the Pori Pori swimming hole
wept this week as he described his desperate efforts to revive the man he considered “like a brother”
Other witnesses took over giving CPR until paramedics arrived but Jontae died beside the water

He always made me happy and made my day when he called me up for our chats.”
Sammy and Jontae went to the popular swimming hole with Jontae’s partner
Sammy said they planned to swim and then head home to “grab a feed”
He took a 4m-5m run-up and leapt from a rock
adopting the classic Superman pose with one clenched fist thrust out in the air
before shifting into a staple dive into the water
“I noticed he didn’t come back up and that’s when I raced down and jumped in,” Sammy said
“I don’t know how deep the water was but when I swam down to Jay it felt like I was swimming for ages to get to him.”
He pulled Jontae on to the rocks and began CPR for what felt like the “longest minutes of his life”
Sammy and the others who made beyond-measure efforts to try to save our son,” Krystle said

They had been planning to move into their own rented home with Kado last Saturday
She said she had not known it was Jontae in trouble in the water until she began leading the ambulance staff to the hard-to-reach scene
“When I was told I ran so fast and got there in two minutes flat.”
Paramedics worked on him for about 30 minutes
“Everyone needs to know how much love this boy had to give and all he wanted was pure happiness for everyone
even for those who hurt him,” Victoria said

he breathed life into them and didn’t even realise he was doing it.”
He was made redundant from the manufacturing job
He joined Krystle at Tasman Aluminium and had been happily working as a delivery driver while exploring options to pursue his dream of becoming an engineer
Steve Harraway said Jontae was” driven to achieve” in whatever opportunities he was given
“He was very gifted and could fix and get lots of things up and running again
He fixed anything he thought needed to be fixed
and sometimes he would push that to the limits and sometimes motors did not survive him.”
Steve said they were blown away by seeing how many people turned up to the funeral on December 10 and how many lives Jontae had touched

The hub is set to consist of a large-scale data centre with an initial energy demand of 150 megawatts and a power plant that will support the national grid by providing balancing power
A BILLION-EURO construction project is set to start in Pori
The 83,000-resident town is set to host a large-scale data centre and power plant – a combination that the partners in the endeavour have described as an “international energy hub” and as one of the “spearhead projects” in Finland
has also described the location – a former industrial area of Outokumpu – as one of the best industrial areas in all of Nordics
“The site is among the best in the Nordics, offering exceptional conditions for a rapid and green implementation,” he commented in a press release issued by Business Pori on Tuesday
The construction phase could begin by the end of this year
providing employment to hundreds of people
Also involved in the undertaking are Compassforge
a real estate developer headquartered in Turku
infrastructure and property development companies in Finland
The power plant to be built in the area is expected to support the national electricity grid by providing balancing power
while the excess heat will be channelled to the local district heating network
with early estimates suggesting it could suffice to keep the entire eastern part of the town warm
the operator of which has yet to be selected
will initially require 150 megawatts of energy
The facilities will be landscaped to create a park-like setting that inspires further development in the area
the undertaking signals a shift from residential to industrial development in Satakunta
“The coastal region is seeing several development projects and attracting interest from diverse sectors,” said Sami Nyroos

Pori Moni, a popular actress known for her engaging public appearances, faced unexpected challenges that prevented her from attending an event in Tangail today. Despite days of promotion on Facebook, where the actress announced her plans to inaugurate the Tin Market showroom near the Elenga bus stand, the event took an unexpected turn due to objections from the National Ulama Mashayekh Aimma Parishad and Hefazat-e-Islam's Tangail and Kalihati branches.
According to Prothom Alo, sources reveal that the actress was scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of Herlan Store, a cosmetics shop in Tin Market, Elenga, at 3:00pm today, Saturday. However, due to resistance from certain groups, the event was postponed.
Herlan Store's proprietor, Mir Masud Rana, confirmed the matter to the media.
According to Mir Masud Rana, the inauguration featuring Pori Moni was scheduled for today, with all required administrative permissions secured. He explained, "We had been promoting the event for several days. However, on Thursday (January 23) night, a man named Shariful Islam called, informing us that they would not permit the event to proceed with Pori Moni."
"Early Friday (January 24) morning, Mufti Sulaiman, Mufti Suruzzaman, and 30 to 40 others called to threaten that they wouldn't let her attend. They even made indecent remarks about her. After Friday prayers, they announced plans to protest and stage a sit-in outside the showroom. Consequently, we were compelled to cancel the event. Still, many people turned up today, hoping to see Pori Moni," he added.
Ahead of her planned visit, Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh's Tangail District Youth Affairs Secretary and National Ulama Mashayekh Aimma Parishad's Kalihati Upazila President, Mufti Sulaiman Habib, posted on Facebook on Friday (January 24).
The incident has sparked outrage across the showbiz industry, with many expressing their concerns on social media about such acts of extremism.
Pori also wrote on social media, stating, "How can one remain so silent? It feels oppressive. Why should artistes face so many obstacles? I'm feeling insecure! Why are we not safe in such an independent country? Mehazabien, Porshi, and others have also faced such harassment before! What are they trying to prove under the guise of religion?"
"What more is there to say…should we just shut down cinema and entertainment in this country altogether then? So, should we assume that we were emotionally manipulated back then? Or are we being manipulated now? Which one is it? This responsibility falls on all of us to bear," the actress concluded.
Pori Moni has often been in the limelight for her personal life more than her work. Over the years, the actress has faced criticism for controversies surrounding her relationships, marriage, and even drug-related incidents.
Despite all of the criticism, her outspoken nature and resilience made her one of the most talked-about figures in the entertainment industry.
Recently, she has once again made headlines due to legal issues and rumours about her romantic life.
Last Monday, actress Pori Moni secured bail in a case filed by Nasir Uddin Mahmud, a director of Dhaka's Savar Boat Club, accusing her of assault, attempted murder, vandalism, and intimidation. After the court granted bail, the necessary legal paperwork was completed.
Her bail bond was signed by two guarantors—her lawyer, Nilanjana Rifat, and young musician Sheikh Sadi. Sadi's consistent presence alongside Pori Moni in court sparked speculation on social media, with many assuming a romantic relationship between the two.
All things considered, it can be said that Pori Moni is going through a tough time. Her Facebook status on Thursday hints at that.
In her post, she wrote, "For some reason today, I felt like asking myself a lot of questions in my own way. I had a deep conversation with myself, confronting myself with difficult and probing questions".
Reflecting on her thoughts, Pori Moni questioned herself: "What have I achieved in my career that fascinates the public so much? Why does the media focus on me so extensively? Why do people seem more interested in my personal life than my work? Looking back to the era of Shabana, Babita, Kabori, and Rozina, were they scrutinised for their personal lives in comparison to their professional achievements?"
She further expressed, "I stopped myself from dwelling on countless more questions because sometimes, life itself becomes more important than one's career. Everyone deserves the right to live in peace.
My only request is—please, let me be. For God's sake, stop dragging my personal life into unnecessary discussions beyond my work".
"I want to provide my children with a beautiful, healthy life. As their mother and only guardian, I want to offer them the best, just like every mother desires!" The past three or four months have been the most difficult period of my life. I feel there's no need to elaborate on why or how", stated the actress.
She then urged everyone to let her be at peace. "I am an actress, I am a woman, but above all, I am a human. I pray to all the people of this world—oh humans, oh greatest beings of the earth, please show me some mercy. Let me live my life peacefully first, and then I will answer all these countless questions".

Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen (NCP) made the announcement on Friday
citing a shortage of explosives in Europe and Finland’s long-term support for Ukraine’s self-defence
The project's value exceeds 200 million euros
TNT (trinitrotoluene) is used in artillery and mortar ammunition
Demand for it has increased considerably due to the war in Ukraine
the ministry launched a project to look into ensuring the Finnish Defence Forces’ access to TNT
either through imports or construction of a domestic plant
"I considered that the best solution is to build a plant in Finland so that the Finnish defence industry and security of supply can be strengthened at the same time," Häkkänen said in a ministry handout
"This new TNT plant will respond to the shortage of explosives throughout Europe and the problems this shortage causes for ammunition production
will play an important role in increasing the production of ammunition in Europe
The investment will also enable Finland to continue its support for Ukraine in the long term,” he added
Earlier on Friday, Häkkänen announced Finland's 27th military aid shipment to Ukraine since the Russian attack began nearly three years ago. Finland is one of the largest donors of military aid to Ukraine, totalling 2.5 billion euros so far
The TNT project has gathered extensive support from business
"This is a highly significant project for the military security of supply of Finland and Europe as a whole
we have advanced the project in numerous meetings in the United States and Europe
Another positive aspect is the number of new jobs the plant will create in Finland," Häkkänen noted
The project will be carried out by the Finnish explosives manufacturer Forcit
the Finnish Defence Forces signed a letter of intent to buy TNT from Forcit
The facility will most likely be built in the Meri-Pori industrial area
The total value of the procurement (excluding VAT) is expected to be at least 255 million euros
That would cover the Finnish Defence Forces’ projected need for TNT explosives in 2028–2037
there is only one facility producing TNT explosives in the EU
which has recently signed several large contracts with US defence contractors

Reflecting on the absence of her nana bhai, Pori Moni shared her emotions. "This is the first time my nana bhai won't be with me on my birthday. Every year, I cut the cake with him, but today, he's not here. It's heartbreaking, but I know he's always in my heart," she said.

Yesterday, actress Pori Moni went live on her official Facebook page to respond to recent media coverage surrounding allegations made by a domestic worker.
Pinky Akter, the worker in question, filed a General Diary (GD) at Dhaka's Vatara Police Station, claiming that Pori Moni physically assaulted her over an issue related to feeding the actress's one-year-old daughter.
Later that night, Pori Moni addressed the incident in a Facebook Live, calling it a "media trial" and expressing deep concern over how the issue has been reported. She stated that while she possesses all the necessary evidence, she is choosing not to release it on social media out of respect for the legal process.
She urged the media to refrain from delivering a one-sided narrative before the facts are verified.
"Anyone familiar with my life over the past few years would know how deeply I value the people who work with me. My life revolves around them. I've celebrated my most personal occasions—Father's Day, Valentine's Day—with them because they're like family to me. I live with them, and they are a part of my everyday world," said Pori Moni during the live.
"A case has been filed, and I believe it should proceed through legal channels. But my question is—couldn't the media have waited? The mental distress this coverage has caused me is beyond words. The way she was interviewed, the platform she was given—are we now justifying any and every GD by giving it airtime without fact-checking?" she added.
Pori stated in the live broadcast that the police came to her house last night between 9:00pm and 9:30pm and questioned everyone in the house.
"It's not about whether this has made me look small or big—if I've done something wrong, then I definitely deserve to be punished. Anyone can make an accusation, but will you declare someone guilty before it's even proven?" she questioned.
Referring to past experiences, she said, "I've been through this before. When I was falsely accused and jailed—7 days in remand and 20 days in custody—the media was relentless. Headlines like 'What did Pori Moni eat in jail?' or 'Which jail did she eat in?' were written not for the sake of attaining viewership. Even then, I chose not to speak out because I believed in the power of the law. I still do."
"All I want is peace—for myself and my two children. I have a domestic helper who has worked with me for nine years. My current driver has been with me for four years, and the previous one worked for five. None of them have ever made any allegations against me. And now, someone who stayed for barely a month is making such accusations?" she asked.
"My staff are like my family. They've stood by me during my darkest times—when I was battling depression and had no one else. They prepare my meals, send me off to work, and keep my world running. So please, don't reduce them—or me—to headlines without truth."
According to the complaint filed on Thursday, April 3, at Vatara Police Station, Pinky Akter alleged that she was assaulted over feeding Pori Moni's daughter. She claimed the attack caused her to lose consciousness, after which she called the national emergency helpline, 999, and the police came and took her from that place.

On May 9, Pori Moni revealed to Indian daily Anandabazar Online that she had adopted her daughter, Safeera Sultana Priom. However, she kept her daughter's face hidden on social media. Earlier, she told The Daily Star, "The feeling of becoming a mother is something only a mother can understand. When I held Priom in my arms, I felt the same joy as when Punnyo was born."
Yesterday, Pori Moni shared the first glimpse of her daughter in a video from Punnyo's birthday party, where she was seen cutting the cake with her two children. She captioned the video, "A lot of you have been eager to see my daughter's face for a while. Today, I'm giving you a quick look at her in this short video from my son's birthday. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers."
This year's birthday theme was jungle-themed, with Pori Moni dressed as a butterfly and Punnyo looking adorable in a tiger-print suit. Her daughter, seen briefly in the video, also looked cute in a jungle-themed outfit.
Since separating from Sariful Razz, Pori Moni has been enjoying life with her son Punnyo and daughter Priom. While she hasn't publicly shared pictures of her daughter on social media, she often shares affectionate moments with her son with her followers.
On the professional front, she will soon appear in Hoichoi's web-series "Rongila Kitab", which was scheduled for release on August 8 but has been delayed due to the ongoing unrest in the country.

After a break, Pori Moni is set to return to the screen with Anam Biswas's directorial web series "Rongila Kitab". In this project, Pori will be portraying Shupti, the wife of a gangster. "I have given my best to become Shupti on the screen, and I believe that the audience will resonate to this."
During the shoots of the project, Pori had an interesting encounter that she considers a blessing in her acting career. "I couldn't complete the work on time due to becoming a mother. Yet, the director and production company waited for a whole year. I am grateful to them."
Since the director was adamant that only Pori is fit for this role, the entire team patiently waited for her. "For an artiste, it is indeed a great achievement, and I will always remember this."
Pori shared that last year, they shot the series on the hill tracks, and she also shared that this thriller story is not about the hill area.
One thing about the director amused Pori. "He never gave feedback after each shot, rather, after we shot the entire day, and wrapped up, he gave his suggestions to us. It was a good experience."
The "Swapnojal" famed actress shared that she has noticed that her fans and the audience are eagerly waiting for her return to the screens. "They often ask me on social media 'When are you returning?'—and it really flatters me."
Pori Moni wants to remain in the heart of the audience, and she shared one of her observations towards people that people now do not comment much on her personal life, rather they are more eager to watch Pori's acting. "At the same time, people praise me as a mother, and they adore my children, which is a great blessing for me."
