The new combined research center and office at SSAB’s Raahe steel mill was completed this spring and will be phased in during the fall
As much SSAB steel as possible has been used for the construction of the building
which also serves as a showcase for the company’s own products
The color combination of gray and rusty brown is typical of the factory site
The new building is located by the road leading to the factory
The research center will carry out research into both raw materials and the finished products produced at the factory
and will help to prepare for future fossil-free steel production
The new laboratory is one of the largest in the Nordic countries
The research center contains the Raahe factory's analysis and testing facilities for raw materials and end products
The office contains meeting and visitor facilities as well as workspaces for approximately 100 office employees
The building has a total floor area of 7,836 m2 and a cubic capacity of 42,930 m3
SSAB’s own steel grades feature prominently in the building
and steel piles have also been used in the foundations
The facade was supplied by SSAB’s subsidiary Ruukki Construction
COR-TEN steel and GreenCoat-coated Ruukki Sandwich panels were used for the exterior cladding
On the east and south sides of the building
excessive heating and sunlight have been eliminated by using a separate solar protection wall with frame parts and cladding made of COR-TEN steel
Perforated and backlit COR-TEN cassettes have been used to highlight the main entrance
The steel frame of the building enables functional adaptability of the space – the office section
has a group of meeting rooms divided by movable partition walls which can be opened up to create a room for a hundred people if necessary
The ceilings are also made of color-coated steel plate from SSAB’s Hämeenlinna factory
Surprising choices of materials in interior design too
steel is prominitely displayed in the lobby
COR-TEN and GreenCoat-coated perforated panel cladding also improves the room’s acoustics
The front of the reception desk is made with ballistic protection Ramor 500 W steel
It combines the properties of protection steel and weathering steel in one product
This combination is ideal for applications such as public building facades
Ramor 500 W steel has a good-looking surface without external corrosion protection
Weathering steel is a low-alloy steel with excellent corrosion resistance in outdoor conditions
Durability is based on an oxide layer that develops on the surface and forms a dense protective layer on the steel surface
Normal patina formation requires outdoor conditions and alternating rain and sunshine
An artificial process was used to create a patina-like surface for this interior cladding
The building takes both functionality and appearance into account
The “steel pipe forest” on the roof also highlights SSAB’s pipe production
The walls are made of perforated steel plate and backlit or ballistic-protection COR-TEN plate
The steel structures are counterbalanced by a high moss-green wall and wood-surface battens
Pneumatic tube system used to send samples to the analysis laboratory
Samples from the factory are sent to the research center's laboratory along a penumatic tube bridge built for them
The bridge material is SSAB’s weathering steel COR-TEN
The weathering steel pneumatic tube bridge requires no surface treatment and is maintenance-free
The project has involved building a total of approximately six kilometers of new pneumatic tubes at the factory
using old pneumatic tube bridges and routes
The building is energy efficient and designed to last a long time
The environmentally-friendly aspect of the steel primarily relates to the absence of a need for maintenance and the long life of the material
SSAB Raahe mills newest building is a combined main laboratory and office building
The new laboratory is one of the largest in the Nordic countries measured in terms of number or samples and is in operation 24/7
The samples reach the laboratory along a pneumatic tube bridge
A total of around six kilometers of new pneumatic tube line have been built to the mill
The Raahe steel mill’s new main laboratory
examines both the raw materials for steelmaking and the end products made at the mill
The fact that around 4.4 million assays are made from the some 240,000 samples analyzed each year gives an idea of the size of the fully automated spectral laboratory
officially called the Mill Office and Main Laboratory
is located along the entrance route to the mill
The office part of the new building has meeting and visitor facilities as well as workspaces for about 100 office workers
The building has a total floor area of 7,836 m2 and volume of 42,930 m3
Our new main laboratory and office building is preparing us for the future production of fossil-free steel
State-of-the-art laboratory facilities can be used to analyze both raw materials and materials generated at different stages in the production process
as well as to conduct research related to product development,” says Jarkko Matkala
“The new facilities are superb and have been designed based on material flows and also for future needs
storage of various materials and transport routes
it will be possible to carry out analyses in fewer intermediate steps when the equipment is replaced
the equipment has been positioned for easy maintenance,” enthuses Minna-Maarit Valkama
The samples arrive from production by pneumatic tube mail to the sample receiving cell
from where they continue their journey through the sample tunnel to the sample processing cell
A lot of completely new instruments have been introduced
a new instrumented impact hammer has been installed and calibrated in the development laboratories
This is a rare set of instruments both nationally and further afield
The impact test hammer can record the fracturing event of the material
the foundations of which have been piled all the way down to the rock
The device must be detached from the building structures so that testing does not cause resonance with them
The chemical composition of steel is determined by and optical emission spectrometer (OES)
The photo shows a robot placing a steel sample into an analyzer
Several hundred samples are analyzed each day
with a throughput time of around a few minutes
SSAB’s own steels feature prominently in the building
As much steel as possible has been used in the building since it also serves as a showcase for the company's own products
The building has a steel frame and steel piles were used in the foundations
The façade was supplied by SSAB's subsidiary Ruukki Construction
COR-TEN and GreenCoat-coated Ruukki Sandwich panels were used for the exterior cladding
Different SSAB steel grades have also been used in the interior of the building
The building is energy efficient and has been designed to last a long time

The solution to the problem was cooperation with RESAND and the technology for treatment of foundry sand
has developed a technology for the treatment/regeneration of foundry sand and a modular sand recovery plant that uses this technology
The reclamation plant treats waste sand thermally and mechanically to increase the recycling rate of foundry sand and reduce the consumption of virgin sand
The company has been treating waste sand from three Finnish foundries in Nuutajärvi since 2019
After installing a plant at the TU Freiberg test foundry in Germany
the Finnish steel foundry Raahe Valimo Oy has been working with the RESAND plant since the beginning of 2023
Sand preparation in the foundry - an on-site visit:
We met for the on-site appointment and were able to talk to the CEO Timo Kronqvist and the foundry manager um about the first experiences in use
Raahe Valimo Oy was founded in 1919 and still operates as a sustainable steel foundry for well-known customers throughout Europe
The company produces about 1,000 tonnes of steel castings a year in various sizes between 10 and 5000kg
Timo Kronqvist emphasizes that the Finnish foundry naturally sets the highest standards for sustainability and considers the circulation of raw materials and auxiliary materials carefully
used to require about 2,500t of silica sand
which was most imported from Belgium by ship
The waste sand was used to be dumped in landfills
Kronqvist stated: "If you are geographically located in the middle of Finland
the sand is usually just in the wrong place"
This was also the case when the sand was processed in Nuutajärvi near Finn Recycling 3 years ago
the distance of 600 km was always an obstacle
This was the reason for installing sand processing directly on site at the foundry
the Finn Recycling (now RESAND) plant has now been in operation and the Raahe foundry has initial findings and figures
setting up the leased plant has already paying off and makes him independent of transport logistics and the strict regulations for landfills in Finland
it was an advantage that he had the sand processed in Nuutajärvi before
so he knew the good quality and the people from the technology
The company's own sandplant usually runs 24 h/day
When the moulds are crushed from used sand with the existing Neuhof plant
the sand can be taken directly to the sand regeneration plant
which is located directly in front of the foundry buildings
we were able to see for ourselves the efficiency of the Raahe foundry and the sand reclamation system
The Finns have shown that the system works
RESAND Oy is a Finnish technology company specializing in sand regeneration
RESAND offers foundries more environmentally friendly and profitable solutions for the use of sand
RESAND has patented a regeneration technology that allows foundry sand to be processed for reuse
This significantly reduces the extraction of new
as well as the CO2 emissions and cost of handling and transporting them
This unique regeneration technology also significantly reduces the amount of waste sand and the need for landfills
RESAND has developed the regeneration technology in Nuutajärvi in cooperation with several foundries and universities for almost 10 years
The Sand As A Service (SAAS) service model for foundries also enables rapid implementation with low investment
RESAND's mission is to innovate the use and recycling of foundry sand together with its customers and thus be part of the solution to a global environmental challenge

As news began circulating in Finland in early January that COVID-19 vaccines could soon be approved
the nation’s health authorities cautioned an excited public that it would take time to distribute the vaccine supply and train enough people to administer them
Retired doctors Matti and Virpi Honkala learned about the potential shortage of vaccinators and contacted their region’s medical director to volunteer their services in Raahe and the surrounding area
“There was such a buzz and everyone wanted to get going right way,” says Virpi
a Rotary International director and member of the Rotary Club of Raahe who previously worked as a surgeon and medical director
Rotary’s PolioPlus national advocacy adviser for Finland and a member of the Rotary club of Pietari Brahe
Both are still licensed to practice medicine
“We knew that if they had a shortage of vaccinators
they would have to pull people from their other duties
and then those services would be put on hold,” Virpi says
“We knew we could step in wherever needed.”
COVID-19 vaccine doses administered by Virpi and Matti Honkalas
population of the Raahe region who had received at least one vaccine dose by the end of April
recommended storage temperature for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine
Both Virpi and Matti have experience managing vaccination campaigns
During the 2009 outbreak of H1N1 (also known as swine flu)
they oversaw the inoculation of nearly 1,000 health care workers prior to the mass vaccination of the general population
but we still know how to vaccinate people,” says Virpi
the Honkalas had vaccinated more than 5,000 people in Raahe and two smaller municipalities nearby — accounting for about half of the vaccinations in their region
including almost all of those 75 and older
People 60 and older were able to make appointments as of May
“Two eager vaccinators can do quite a lot,” Matti says
People have been excited and feel relieved about the vaccine rollout
Virpi was keen to get their Rotary clubs involved in the effort
and Matti wanted to promote the importance of vaccines
and our project for our community,” Virpi says
“We know how eager Rotary members are to promote vaccinations
Members of both Rotary clubs volunteered to act as ushers and park cars at vaccination sites
Rotary club members played a crucial role directing people in and out of a closed school that was converted to a vaccination center
Virpi says staff members were thrilled to have the help
because the school layout was more complicated than the setup at other vaccine locations
Finland’s ministry of health sets the country’s vaccination strategy
the first that became available in Finland
so a cold chain must be maintained for doses to remain effective
Vaccine doses are packed in large containers filled with dry ice and flown from a pharmaceutical factory to Helsinki
The doses are then distributed to regions according to their population and their needs
Each region’s medical director and nursing staff schedule vaccination appointments as doses become available
and university hospitals distribute vaccine batches to municipalities
The vaccines for the Raahe region come from a university hospital about 75 km (47 miles) away
the Honkalas were vaccinating mostly front-line health care workers
they assisted with vaccinations in nursing homes and retirement communities
the Honkalas began providing vaccinations several days a week
including at the hospital in Raahe and at smaller clinics in the two neighboring towns
“At first we had only shorter days,” Virpi says
“The nurses in charge of scheduling set up one appointment every 10 minutes
I have never spent so much time walking corridors
they realized we could do more and increased the pace to two every five minutes.”
Virpi says the vaccination effort has been a welcome relief from the isolation of the pandemic
and former patients as they come in for their vaccinations,” she says
I never saw people much after their operations — only if something went wrong
I am seeing people who remember that I operated on them as many as 30 years ago
sharing how well they have been doing since.”
Matti says he has also been working to fight vaccine misinformation and hesitancy
drawing on years of experience with the polio campaign
He finds opportunities to talk to people while they are waiting
using his knowledge as a polio advocacy specialist to speak about the power and efficacy of vaccines
and rumors can spread easily based on a rare case
after the AstraZeneca vaccine was paused because of some reports of blood clots
he found that more people came in expressing concern about which vaccine they were receiving
Virpi says she also uses humor to allay people’s concerns
‘Which did you inject me with?’ I told him
And I will be able to follow you with the gadgets I have,’” she quipped
Having administered more than 5,000 vaccinations
Virpi suggested to her husband that they could stop after they reached 10,000 and let others do the rest

Joonas Donskoi got an up-close view of where his money went
Donskoi, who played seven NHL seasons for the San Jose Sharks, Colorado Avalanche and Seattle Kraken before his retirement after the 2022-23 season, saved Pulju indoor skate park in his hometown of Raahe
in 2019 with a timely donation wiping out the park's debt
The community wanted to show its appreciation for the gesture and decided to raise the veteran forward's jersey to the rafters of the park.
But now, with his career in the NHL completed, it was time for Donskoi to shred.
An avid skater during childhood, Donskoi promised the park's co-founders, Valtteri Karjula and Henri Ylikulju, that he would try a few tricks on the grounds. Karjula shared some video on social media.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Henri "Heimo" Ylikulju (@heimoart)
Donskoi was all smiles for the video, much like the young skaters in his hometown will continue to be.

Wärtsilä has signed a turnkey contract to supply a liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminal to be built in Raahe
construction and installation) contract has been signed with energy company
The scope includes two LNG vacuum insulated storage tanks with a combined net volume of 1400 m3
The LNG terminal is scheduled to be operational in April 2018
The LNG will be supplied to Raahe by trucks from Wärtsilä’s first LNG terminal installation
the Tornio Manga facility in Finnish Lapland.
The main user for the natural gas from the terminal will be the SSAB Raahe steel mill
By using LNG to generate power and heat to the mill
SSAB will be able to move to cleaner energy production
the steel mill will notably reduce its CO2
“We wanted a modern LNG-terminal that utilizes reliable technology
Wärtsilä’s technology fits our need and they have experience as an EPC provider,” says Pekka Inkala

An employee cutting a sample off a semi-finished metal product at the SSAB mill in Raahe
Raahe was one of two options considered by the steel manufacturer as the location of a fossil-free steel mill
the company said it has decided to build the mill in Luleå
THE DECISION by SSAB to choose Sweden over Finland as the location of its fossil-free steel mill has kindled discussion in Finland
SSAB announced last week it will invest about 4.5 billion euros in building a fossil-free steel mill in Luleå
Its completion will signal the shutdown of the current blast furnace-based production system
shaving seven per cent off the carbon dioxide emissions of Sweden
The mill is to be inaugurated at the end of 2028 and reach full capacity in 2029
The company revealed that it continues to plan a similar transformation in Raahe
a town of roughly 24,000 people in North Ostrobothnia
but that the timing will depend on its financing and execution capacity
as well as lessons from the project in Luleå
The decision may have come as a bit of a surprise to some in Finland
Martin Lindqvist, the chief executive of SSAB, stated to Kauppalehti last autumn that Raahe was ahead in the race to clinch the investment
The environmental permit process had been fast tracked
electricity links had been secured and other preparations were well underway in Raahe
a roughly 24,000-resident town in North Ostrobothnia
Minister of Finance Riikka Purra (PS) last Tuesday linked the decision to the political strikes in Finland
pointing to a survey by Technology Finland
The survey found that 40 per cent of companies would be investing less in the country as a result of the strikes
albeit 60 per cent of them with the caveat that the impact on investment decisions would be fairly limited
“With the situation not being easy also in other regards
SSAB is one of those that are targeted by the strikes,” she wrote on X on 2 April
the managing director of the Federation of Finnish Enterprises
SSAB, though, denied the suggestion that its decision was swayed by the strikes. “This project had been in the works for a long while before the political strikes started. The decision is made based on our operational plans,” Olavi Huhtala, the head of SSAB Europe, commented to YLE on 2 April
The Finnish Climate Change Panel reminded that the Raahe mill has accounted for around 10 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions in Finland. Chairperson Jyri Seppälä said to the public broadcasting company that the decision to at least delay the mill’s decarbonisation could complicate the national effort to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035
especially if no other investments are made to nudge the mill in a low-carbon direction
“[The delay] doesn’t create a completely impossible situation for our goals because we’re making good progress elsewhere in emissions
We do have to turn our land-use sector into a net sink by 2035 to achieve carbon neutrality,” he said to YLE on Wednesday
is so large that investments in low-carbon processes are all but necessary
“The mill has to compete with some other merits than simply by producing traditional steel well
This low-carbon aspect is definitely one competitive measure that’d enable the continuation of production in future,” Seppälä stated to YLE

[NOR-TSXV; FIEIF-OTC] shares lost 38% of their value Wednesday February 13 after the company said it is experiencing liquidity and operational issues at its 100%-owned Laiva Mine near Raahe
In a status update that triggered heavy selling of the shares
Nordic said these problems are due to a shortfall in tonnes and grades to the mill
Nordic shares were down 38.5% or $0.025 to $0.04 on volume of 4.24 million
making it one of the most actively traded stocks on the TSX Venture Exchange
The stock was halted at 10.49 AM Pacific time
Although the company said it was funded to production by a gold forward sale and loan
Nordic began operations with a working capital deficit and has continued operating with a working capital deficit to date
significant efforts have gone into finding additional lenders and investors to remedy this situation
but these have been unsuccessful due to market conditions and the structure of the company’s financing,” Nordic said in a press release
the company said it had hoped that its current financier and lender would provide additional financing
but this has not materialized due in part to operational issues and production shortfalls
the company is experiencing liquidity and cash flow uncertainties
Nordic said the operational issues were caused by the under-performance of its mining contractor
“This has resulted in lower than expected grade and tonnage to the mill
causing the company to miss various milestones under the terms of its current financing.”
The company said it is working with the contractor to remedy these issues
News of operational issues comes just two months after Nordic said it had completed the first gold pour at the Laiva Mine
That was one year after Nordic acquired the operation for approximately $25 million in cash
Laiva is a conventional open pit mine with two pits
According to a Preliminary Economic Assessment announced in July 2018
Nordic is forecasting life-of-mine production of 456,600 ounces of gold over a six-year mine life
The forecast is based on a measured and indicated resource of 335,000 tonnes at 1.132 g/t gold as well as an indicated resource of 3.4 million tonnes at 1.248 g/t gold
On top of that is an inferred resource of over 9 million tonnes
That material is expected to support average annual gold production of 75,981 ounces at an all-in-sustaining cost of US$974/oz
The PEA pegged the pre-production capital expenditure at $7.1 million
the company said it poured another doré bar (worth US$805,442) on February 5
the Laiva Mine has produced 6,096 ounces of gold since the first pour on November 30
and received US$7.76 million in revenue from gold sales
Nordic said it will process an additional 40,000 tonnes of ore through the mill at a grade of 1.1 g/t gold and expects to produce an additional 1,217 ounces by the end of February
Nordic President and CEO Michael Hepworth said the lack of working capital and operational challenges have resulted in a slower than anticipated ramp up to commercial production
“The company is now examining all strategic alternatives to remedy this situation,” he said

Canada-based Otso Gold Corp has restarted the process plant at its wholly owned Otso gold mine in Finland and began ramping up production on September 20
with the first gold pour expected in October
which is located near Raahe in central Finland
is developed and fully permitted with all infrastructure in place
It is progressing towards production in October to ramp up towards processing ore at nameplate capacity of 2Mt/y
the company stated that "the move back towards production represents the culmination of the considerable work completed by management to date to ensure that operations are long term
It added that it marks the conclusion of its preparatory works phase and the beginning of its ramp-up to production phase before moving to full commercial production
Blasting operations at the site to test patterns for production and move ore for the ramp-up began in September
called the North and South pits - initial mining will be focused on the South pit and shallow targets identified around the pit edges of both the North and South pit
Contractor John T Boyd is working closely with Otso Gold to outline the long-term mine plan
Otso Gold anticipates publishing the definitive feasibility study (DFS) prepared by Boyd in October
The mine plan will increase the mining area by approximately 300% from the current footprint as well as merging the North and South pits
Boyd is also assessing options to double production onsite by installing a parallel low-grade circuit
Otso Gold stated: "Progress is encouraging and will continue
with the results being expected after the publication of the previously announced feasibility study"
In August, Otso Gold contracted E Hartikainen to provide mining services at the Otso mine
Otso Gold said that the contract with Hartikainen "sets the company up with a highly competent mining contractor with significant experience mining in the region and having a fleet of world-class equipment"
All preparatory work onsite for the ramp-up to production has been completed; this includes significant upgrades to the water reservoir
Orica will work with Otso Gold and Hartikainen onsite to supply and test explosives for mining
The plant's processing equipment has been tested and maintained and
Metso Outotec has spent considerable time testing the mills and crushers onsite
Otso Gold is expanding its high-grade sulphide circuit capacity from 6t/h to 12t/h initially at a approximately 97% recovery
To optimise recovery and enhance monitoring
the company has upgraded and modernised its Valmet DNA distributed control system (DCS) process automation system
The company plans to install a portable jaw and cone crusher to decrease the size fraction of the ore feed to the milling circuit
which will allow it the flexibility to optimise grind size
The company expects this to ultimately improve recovery and throughput

The Finnish Government has adopted a resolution to launch the tendering procedure for five offshore wind projects in public water areas
Metsähallitus will immediately launch the process to select the implementing partners for two offshore wind power projects
The competitive tendering procedures to be launched this year will concern the offshore wind projects located off Närpiö and off Pyhäjoki and Raahe on the west coast of Finland
The Edith offshore wind project will be located in the sea area belonging to Närpiö and the Ebba project in the sea areas off Pyhäjoki and Raahe
The municipalities have approved the planning proposals for the projects and the preliminary studies launched by Metsähallitus
which manages the land and water areas of the Finnish state
The total planned capacity of the offshore wind projects will be approximately 3 GW
while the total investment value is estimated to be between EUR 6 billion and EUR 8 billion
the projects are estimated to produce up to 14 TWh of clean electricity annually
which would currently cover more than 17 per cent of Finland’s electricity consumption
The partner selection process will progress in phases
After the submission of preliminary tenders
the most potential partners are selected to proceed to the next phase
These potential partners will then submit their binding tenders
based on which the partners for the project will finally be selected
Metsähallitus’ goal is to complete the tendering processes of the Edith and Ebba projects during 2024
The implementation of the process for the other three areas will be confirmed next year
The Finnish government approved the offshore wind power auction model for public water areas in 2021
according to which Metsähallitus offers areas for use by wind power companies
The wind farm areas remain state property and the rental income forms part of the result that Metsähallitus reports to the state
The country’s offshore wind power programme supports its goal of being carbon neutral by 2035 as well as
among other things, becoming a leading player in the hydrogen economy in Europe

Sweden's SSAB will acquire its Finnish steel-making rival Rautaruukki in an attempt to alleviate the persistent struggles of both companies in Europe
Both SSAB and Rautaruukki are confident that together they are stronger and better-equipped to thrive in international competition
“There is a limit to how much a company can save on its own,” Rautaruukki chairman Kim Gran explained on Wednesday
Both SSAB and Rautaruukki have streamlined their operations notably in recent years
The steel-makers now estimate that the transaction will enable them to further rationalise production
and hence generate savings of 150 million euros in three years' time
Roughly 900 positions may consequently be shed in Sweden and Finland
News agency Reuters writes that last year the demand for steel slipped by 4 per cent in the European Union to levels some 30 per cent below those of 2007
the European steel industry has struggled with overcapacity
where economic growth is spurring construction and consumption
The acquisition will be carried out as a share exchange transaction
with SSAB offering 0.4752 class A shares and 1.2131 class B shares for each Rautaruukki share
current shareholders in SSAB would hold 58 per cent of the shares and 75 per cent of votes in the new company
The remaining shares would be held by Rautaruukki's owners
the largest owner in the new company would be Industrivärlden
with its share of 17.5 per cent of votes and 10.5 per cent share of shares
would in turn hold 16.8 per cent of shares and 10 per cent of votes
The headquarters of the combined company would be sited in Stockholm
SSAB CEO Martin Lindqvist assured that Rautaruukki's steel works in Raahe will continue to have a key role in the new company's production
viewed that the company's transfer to SSAB through an exchange of shares is a good solution for all stakeholders
“We are building a Nordic steel manufacturer with stronger resources to also specialise globally,” stated Tamminen
who will retire after the completion of the transaction
has been at the helm of Rautaruukki for ten years
He insists that the fact that Rautaruukki is being sold to a Swedish rival is not an indication of failure
“I have backed the merger idea and promoted it
This will form the foundation for continuation and the further development of the Nordic steel industry.”
The merger still requires the approval of the European Commission's antitrust body
the body ruled that Finnish steel-maker Outokumpu must sell its manufacturing plant in Terni
due to reasons pertaining to competition laws
Outokumpu had acquired the plant from Germany's ThyssenKrupp as part of an extensive corporate restructuring scheme
Neither SSAB or Rautaruukki have disclosed their market shares
The combined company is projected to be in a strong position in the Nordic countries but remain relatively insignificant globally
Lindqvist emphasised in Stockholm that the companies will concentrate especially on the global market
“We would not go through with this if we were expecting any major problems,” he said
Lindqvist declined to speculate on whether the company may be obliged to shut down or offload manufacturing facilities in the Nordic countries due to competition laws

The value of a 10-year deal to fuel the planned Fennovoima plant would be 450 million euros
according to a statement published on Monday by TVEL
It is a subsidiary of the Russian state-owned nuclear company Rosatom
a consortium of Finnish utilities and industrial manufacturers
last year signed a deal with Rosatom to build the nation’s third nuclear power plant
The decision was seen as a cost-cutting move after the project’s main backer
TVEL says it will mine the uranium itself and process it into nuclear fuel
The company also has a nuclear waste processing facility in Siberia
all nuclear waste must be disposed of within the country
Fennovoima has yet to explain how it plans to meet this requirement
The owners of a waste disposal facility under construction further down the coast at Eurajoki say it will not have enough space for Fennovoima’s waste

Image: Philip Mostert / Afarak Group Yle News24.9.2019 19:13Finland's Financial Supervisory Authority (FIN-FSA) has fined the Afarak Group nearly 1.5 million euros for violations related to insider trading
The 1.45 million euro penalty stems from the company failure to comply in late 2017 with regulations on the disclosure of inside information and drawing up of a list of designated insiders
the firm's share price rose based on inside information about a planned takeover bid
The company should then have disclosed this information to the public or assessed whether the situation met the conditions for delayed disclosure of inside information
and should also have set up an official insider list
"the company failed to fulfil a number of other obligations under the Market Abuse Regulation and the Securities Market Act," the financial watchdog said in a statement on Tuesday
The authority says that the size of the penalty is based on various factors including "the significance of said inside information to investors
the duration of the breach and to the fact that the company’s breaches are likely to have complicated the supervision practised by the FIN-FSA and increased the risk of inside information leaks
the company has failed to cooperate with the FIN-FSA in investigating the matter," it adds

the Helsinki-based metals firm was known as the Ruukki Group from 1985 to 2013
At that point it changed its name after settling a dispute with Rautaruukki
another metal firm that now markets itself using the name Ruukki
It was established in the nearby town of Raahe
Croatian businessman Danko Končar is Afarak's former CEO
current COO and principal owner via various other companies
His wife Jelena Manojlovic is on the firm's board
FIN-FSA has intervened in Afarak's operations in the past
it ordered him to pay accrued supplementary fines of 110 million euros
At that point the authority cited "the severity of Končar's misconduct" which it said had "served to undermine confidence in the securities markets"
Also in June the Regional State Administrative Agency of Southern Finland had ordered a special audit of Afarak’s administration and accounts for various financial periods
In 2017, Finland's National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) probed Končar's suspected links to organised crime

divisioonan länsirannikon lohkon voittanut Kaarinan Kiekko-Pojat aloittaa taipaleensa Suomi-sarjan karsinnassa huomenna perjantaina
kun kaarinalaiset matkustavat Porvooseen Huntersin vieraaksi
Joukkue on pieniä kuumesairauksia lukuun ottamatta terve
mutta meillä on sen verran laaja materiaali
ettei parin pelaajan poissaolo hirveästi vaikuta
Kiekko-Pojat nappasi jo neljännen kerran peräkkäin länsirannikon kärkipaikan itselleen
Suomi-sarjan karsintojen ensimmäisessä vaiheessa vastaan tulee Porvoon Hunters ja vielä viime kaudella Suomi-sarjassa pelannut Raahe-Kiekko
Lohkon joukkueet pelaavat kaksinkertaisen sarjan ja lohkon kaksi parasta menee eteenpäin
mutta ilman muuta jatkokarsintoihin halutaan mennä
Hunters voitti myös lohkon ensimmäisessä ottelussa Raahen 9-2
Molemmat Kakipon kotiottelut alkavat Kaarinan jäähallissa 13.20
Vaikka vastus on kova jo ensimmäisessä vaiheessa
Kaarinassa karsintoihin lähdetään Suomi-sarja mielessä
Suomi-sarjan karsinnat ovat tällä hetkellä korkein sarjataso
jossa voi pelillisesti nousta sarjaporrasta ylemmäs
vaatisi se kuitenkin Kaarinassa panostamista
– Talouspuoli pitäisi siinä tilanteessa järjestää uudelleen
Pelillisesti Turun alueella on se hyvä tilanne
Tällä hetkellä esimerkiksi A-junioreiden jälkeen jää valtavat määrät pelaajia ilman seuraa
että täällä päin on jopa tilausta Suomi-sarjan seuralle

His next offering Tera Mera Saath Rahe for Star Bharat is no different from the previous litany of his works
Indian audiences love his landscape of narratives because he knows what they want
has protagonists who have experienced unsurpassed wins after turbulent rides
That’s his winning formula. He knows how to distil the stories
which is spotlessly visible in the launch promo of Tera Mera Saath Raahe
I love to create a character that is beyond the realms of right and wrong
That gives any narrative a strong meaning,” says Ved Raj
So he has brought the famous saas-bahu jodi of Rupal -- Patel aka Kokila and Giaa Manek aka Gopi bahu -- back on television

“My shows are based on the winning streak of the protagonist
That’s the one-line definition of all my shows
the producer known for hit shows like Thapki Pyar Ki
Tera Mera Saath Raahe. He is exalted for his unique way of storytelling and is always surprising his audiences with unimaginable twists and turns
my viewers will witness their favourites Kokila and Gopi bahu in a completely different avatar
They will relish their bond,” says Ved Raj. Is it the same story with a new voice
“Audience loves connectivity and nostalgia
the thoroughness of their performances matches both the actors’ alacrity
I am not selling you an old wine in a new bottle
It’s a completely different storyline,” declares Ved Raj. He promises a story filled with drama and laced with humour
his shows are not the profusion of mellow drama
“Family sitcoms are incomplete without drama
it has some lighter moments and that’s the differentiator
I want my viewers to enjoy the graph of emotions
followed by the ultimate victory of my protagonist,” says Ved Raj. Well
the idea seems to connect the new with the old
as Gopi bahu may be portrayed as naïve and innocent or Kokila may resonate matriarchy
but there is more to Gopi bahu than washing the laptop,” signs off Ved Raj
And we are waiting in anticipation to know rasode mein kaun tha!!'
