In what could dramatically accelerate expansion of U.S
Arctic capabilities the Coast Guard is reportedly in negotiations with Finnish shipbuilder Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) for three to five medium-sized icebreakers
Finland’s largest newspaper Helsingin Sanomat reports that the potential five-vessel deal would be valued at 2.5 billion Euro
In addition the yard is also said to be exploring the possibility of delivering three heavy icebreakers
likely at a somewhat higher total price point
Finnish yards could complete a medium ice-breaker of ready design in as little as 36 months
The Coast Guard is reportedly aiming to place the first new icebreaker into service before the end of President Trump’s time in office
If the negotiations lead to a firm order it would significantly speed up the reconstitution and ultimately expansion of the country’s icebreaker fleet.
The news out of Finland follows a USCG Request for Information (RFI) last week to domestic and international shipyards for the construction of mid-size icebreakers within a three year timespan
During a visit to the White House last month Finland’s President Stubb discussed the topic of icebreakers with Trump highlighting his country’s capabilities in the area
Discussions on the matter were progressing well Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen reported following a visit with her American counterpart Marco Rubio last week
Finnish yards have constructed 60 percent of the world’s icebreakers. Just last week Finland’s Aker Arctic, a leading firm for the development and engineering of ice-class vessels, announced that it will design the next-generation Baltic Sea assistance icebreaker
RMC’s yard is located in western Finland on the shores of the Baltic Sea
In a post highlighting the yard’s capabilities, Sixty Degrees North
describes RMC’s track record constructing icebreakers and ice-capable vessels
including current work on ice-class corvettes for the Finnish Navy
Rauma’s ability to construct several icebreakers simultaneously aided by its own steel production
may give it an advantage competing against other yards vying for contracts
Construction of the icebreaker will begin in Finland before shifting to Canada
RMC did not immediately respond to a request for comment

Essential news coupled with the finest maritime content sourced from across the globe
Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat broke the news on Friday, April 18, saying it had confirmed the negotiations with three unnamed sources. Yle News has also picked up the story citing discussions in March between Finnish President Alexander Stubb and President Donald Trump
The newspaper reports just over a week ago Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen discussed the matter with U.S
the Rauma shipyard would build up to five medium-sized icebreakers
with the order valued at around €2.5 billion ($2.85 million)
Helsingin Sanomat says that exploratory discussions are also underway regarding three larger vessels.
located in southwest Finland on the Gulf of Bothnia
highlights on its website that three multi-purpose icebreakers were constructed in Rauma between 1993 and 1998 at the former Aker Finnyards and have been serviced at Rauma Marine
The yard also has experience with ice-strengthened hulls including for the ferry Aurora Botnia built in 2021
and recently completed the hull for the first of four multi-role corvettes for the Finnish Navy
The first vessel is due to launch this spring and the second has started construction with the yard highlighted the vessels will be able to “operate in icy conditions.” The yard built a new enclosed construction hall for this project and has been positioning itself for expected orders to replace existing icebreakers in Scandinavia
It reports it currently has orders till 2028 valued at over one billion euros ($1.14 billion) as of October 2024
Yle cautions in its report that the negotiations do not guarantee a deal
Coast Guard has approached several shipyards around the world to assess their capacity to deliver icebreakers within 36 months
it also quotes Foreign Minister Valtonen who said after meeting Rubio
"We will likely have concrete news fairly soon."
A deal would be in keeping with the 2024 agreement between the United States, Canada, and Finland to jointly develop icebreakers
Canadian shipbuilder Davie was reported to be a driving force behind the agreement
which it was highlighted has built more than 50 percent of the global icebreakers
The Helsinki Shipyard was scheduled to build a new icebreaker for Russia
but the deal was blocked after the start of the war in Ukraine and that contributed to the financial collapse of the yard

"I haven't had enough time to properly process what this means to me but I have a great feeling of gratitude towards all my fellow Fingersoftians and partners who I've worked with over the years," Rauma wrote
"When I started we had one live game and 12 people
doubled annual revenue and built a full-service game studio of 100 professionals."
He concluded: "That success is not coincidence or luck
rather it's a result of everyone showing up every day and making it happen."
Rauma joined Fingersoft in 2014 as a full stack developer and product owner
he also took on the role of acting CEO between July and December 2019 as the studio searched for its next leader
Rauma began his career in the games industry in 2007 as a software designer at digital agency studio HappyWise

Norsk e-Fuel announces its plans for strategic expansion into Finland by securing exclusive access to14 hectares of land in Rauma on the western coast of Finland
Together with the energy companyFortum and the Port of Rauma
the project developer will now start with electricity grid connectionplanning and permitting processes to establish an e-Fuel production facility
This expansion of the project pipeline marks Norsk e-Fuel’s first project outside of Norway
as the company continues to grow its presence in Northern Europe
By signing a strategic partnership agreement with Fortum for site development
Norsk e-Fuel has secured sufficient space for an e-Fuel plant with an annual production volume of up to 100 million litres
Most of the product will be refined into synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) to provide fossil-free fuels to the aviation industry
“The site in Rauma offers a perfect combination of key factors for a successful e-Fuel project,” says Lars Bjørn Larsen
a strong industrial ecosystem for potential synergies
this is an opportunity we’re eager to seize
The project is currently in its early stages
and we are looking forward to starting the development process.”
”The Port of Rauma aims to diversify the flow of goods and contribute to the development of the regional economy

viewers are also curious about the filming location
Sarah Rand•Feb 20
some viewers may be more intrigued by the sights in the background
To get a better look at the striking nature from the film
Here is what we know about The Gorge filming location and how director Scott Derrickson captured the slightly horror-coded movie
studios and various locations were used to capture certain scenes
The Gorge filming locations may be more diverse than audiences may assume due to the flexibility of studio environments; these controlled environments help to create scenes that otherwise would be difficult or impossible to capture in the real world
played an important role in filming The Gorge scenes that take place underground and inside the mysterious gorge
Custom sets and even greenscreens were used there
These features are likely no surprise since this studio is famous for many productions including the Harry Potter franchise and many DC movies
Key Scenes: Norway was the main filming location for outdoor scenes
On-screen moments highlighting the exterior background and mountain valley of the gorge were shot in Norway
Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Norway depends on the preferences of travelers
But to enjoy a similar aesthetic as seen in The Gorge
it may be best to visit during the spring season
Transportation Options: Getting to Norway is not the most difficult thing to do
Some eager adventurers may have issues depending on where they are traveling from
Many cities do not have direct flights to Norway so traveling by ship
Norway is the main The Gorge filming location for outdoor scenes
this municipality has a town called Åndalsnes which was the specific site for filming
the lead actors did not really film in Norway – it simply was the ideal location for nature shots used to make the movie feel more real
This decision might have been made to save money on travel
For the overall production of the movie it likely was a cinematic choice
Since Rauma is well known for its lush natural landscapes
The green valley that is depicted in the film is one of the many that travelers may be able to explore during a visit
Since many of the nature shots were captured and blended
visitors can just take in the sights leisurely
canyon and more were stitched together in post-production
These were supplemented with some composite shots
it may be hard for fans to even recognize exact spots from the movie
Things to Do: Due to the picturesque views available to visitors and locals of Rauma
there are many ways to explore the surrounding nature
cycling and taking guided (bus) sightseeing tours are the most popular ways to explore the area
Where to Eat: Sødahlhuset and Wanhan Rauman Kellari are two popular restaurants in the Rauma area to check out
Key Scenes: Coastal shots were captured in Conwy
Viewers may notice that there are not many ocean scenes in The Gorge
but the few that made the cut were filmed here
the best time to visit Conwy is between June and August
The country is considered to be an underrated gem
visiting during this time is sure to be an unforgettable experience
Transportation Options: Getting to Conwy is not hard
although it is in north Wales and not metropolitan like London
Travelers can take the bus or train to discover different parts of Conwy
Wales as The Gorge filming location due to its convenience and clearly beautiful features
Llandudno is the town where scenes set right on the water were filmed
Travelers certainly can discern whether or not Llandudno is a place of particular importance to them during their travels
Wales is well worth the visit so travelers should embark on a tour of the country
That way they can make the most of this charming hideaway and appreciate the sense of solitude.
But if viewers watch closely and happen to visit
they will notice an almost identical coast line in Wales
This beach town is where a rocky yet romantic environment awaits travelers
not many changes were made to the environment for the film
This contrasts with the studio set up process which was very elaborate
Another point that led to Conwy being a major film location is how accessible it is
Since the movie was partially filmed in London
traveling to Wales was likely less expensive than traveling to Paris itself.
Where to Eat: The Cottage Loaf and Home Cookin’ are popular local eateries that travelers should not miss out on
Where to Stay: The Imperial Hotel and Grand Hotel Llandudno are two of the highest rated accommodations in the area

Fortum and the Port of Rauma have agreed on the site development for a green transition project. Under the collaboration agreement, Fortum and the Port of Rauma will apply for a zoning change to enable a hydrogen and/or hydrogen derivatives production plant investment at a site located in the Port. The site is about 14 hectares and is located in the Petäjäs area of the Port.
The actual investment in the plant will be made by the project investor.
”The Port of Rauma aims to diversify the flow of goods and contribute to the development of the regional economy. The Port’s excellent location and access to raw materials and labour make it an ideal location for new industrial projects. Marketing and talks with potential project implementers are already underway. In addition to the area being developed with Fortum, we are also advancing the further construction of the Järviluoto expansion area,” notes Port of Rauma CEO Janne Virta.
”Our goal is to develop and market the area to potential plant investors and enable them to carry out the project smoothly. In line with its strategy, Fortum is driving for a decarbonisation based on clean energy,” says Vesa Maso, Director of Fortum’s Industrial Customer Electrification unit.

Rauma Marine Constructions shipyard company in Rauma
The United States Coast Guard is in negotiations with Finnish shipbuilder Rauma Marine Constructions over a possible €2.5 billion contract to construct several new icebreakers
According to sources familiar with the discussions
the potential deal covers up to five medium-sized vessels and could also include three larger icebreakers
The US Coast Guard has approached several global shipyards as it seeks builders capable of delivering medium-sized icebreakers within 36 months
Rauma’s offer is under active consideration
has a long history in ice-class vessel construction
it built three icebreakers and more recently delivered the Aurora Botnia
It is currently building four multi-role warships for the Finnish Navy
all designed to operate in Arctic conditions
founded in 2014 and entirely Finnish-owned
holds confirmed shipbuilding orders exceeding one billion euros and is fully booked through 2028
have reinforced its capacity for large and complex projects
the US is also interested in exploring the construction of three large icebreakers in addition to the five medium ones
the order would represent one of the most significant foreign investments in Finland’s shipbuilding sector in recent years
The possible agreement follows high-level diplomatic discussions between Finnish and US leaders
President Alexander Stubb raised the matter with US President Donald Trump in Florida at the end of March
The subject also came up during Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen’s visit to Washington earlier in April
where she met with her US counterpart Marco Rubio
Valtonen said following the talks that the negotiations had progressed and that "concrete news" could be expected soon regarding the export of Finnish-built icebreakers to the United States
The US Coast Guard is expanding its fleet to meet Arctic security needs
President Trump previously announced an intention to acquire up to 40 new large icebreakers
a figure that experts have questioned as unrealistic
any contract awarded to Finnish shipbuilders would carry major economic implications
potentially bringing substantial investment and job creation to the region
Helsinki Shipyard is also being considered as a candidate for the icebreaker programme
Helsinki Shipyard has built over half the world’s icebreakers but recently faced financial difficulties
including sanctions-related project cancellations
The US Coast Guard recently issued a Request for Information seeking ready-to-build designs for 370-foot Arctic Security Cutters
While the RFI is understood to be separate from the talks with Rauma
it signals increased American urgency to modernise its ice-capable fleet

Spirit of Tasmania V is one of TT-Line’s new LNG dual-fuel vessels slated for delivery in 2025
but the vessel broke free of its moorings in Rauma during hurricane-force winds in the Finnish town
ONE of Tasmania’s long-awaited new ferries broke free of its moorings in Rauma on Friday evening amid hurricane-force winds
Spirit of Tasmania V (IMO: 9936599) is being built by Rauma Marine Constructions in Finland and is slated to be delivered to the Australian state in 2025
Spirit of Tasmania V broke loose from the RMC’s outfitting quay
Finland was battered by storms during the weekend
with winds surpassing the definition for a hurricane measured on Kylmäpihlaja
by the Finnish Meteorological Institute on Friday.
Spirit of Tasmania (the trade name of TT-Line) acting chief executive Kym Sayers said the vessel was forced against the opposite quayside
though a tug and two barges between the ferry and the quayside prevent any serious damage to the hull
with every action possible being taken to protect the vessel,” Sayers said
“A detailed assessment of any damage is just not possible at this stage
but it appears there has been no breach to the hull
“There are three tugs alongside Spirit of Tasmania V
and as soon as wind conditions are suitable
the vessel will be returned and secured to the lay-up berth at RMC.”
This incident is the latest chapter in what has been a lengthy and difficult story for TT-Line and its new vessels
Only last week, it was announced that the other newbuilding, Spirit of Tasmania IV, would have to be laid up in Leith, Scotland, because a new quay in Devonport
capable of berthing the vessel would not be finished for another two years
That would leave the ferry vulnerable to the pack ice which affects Rauma every year
Tasmania’s state government said it was open to leasing the ships out to recoup some of the lost revenue
but that was not TT-Line’s preferred option

Rauma Art Museum is organising the second oldest continuously running international contemporary art exhibition in Finland
Formerly known as the Rauma Biennale Balticum
the exhibition is now known as the Rauma Triennale
Minna Bengs (FI),Alan Bulfin (IR),Matthew Cowan (NZ),Ida Sofia Fleming (FI),Laura Hetemäki (FI),Isa Hukka (FI),Hele Okkonen (FI),Minjee Hwang Kim (KR)
Christoph & Sebastian Mügge (SE),Laura Põld (EE) & Gary Markle (CA) and Jenni-Juulia Wallinheimo-Heimonen (FI)
The third edition of the Rauma Triennial in the summer of 2025 will explore the struggle and effort at the heart of society as a natural feature of the human body
The forthcoming exhibition will present a wide range of artists and their artistic work around the themes of effort and toil (vaiva in Finnish)
Many things in and around us cause and require effort
Is our environment and social life organised so that we recognise the effort that
The exhibition outlines a broader understanding of the concept of effort
“Vaiva” is a practical issue to be resolved
but also a force that enriches the diversity of the human species
Could we be enchanted by efforts and thus tempted to make an effort for each other and our environment
Rauma Triennale 2025 curator Sanna Karimäki-Nuutinen (FI) is a curator and doctoral researcher
She has been working as the head curator of the Kunsthalle Seinäjok between 2010-2024
Karimäki-Nuutinen’s own experience adds an essential dimension to the exhibition: “As a mother of a daughter who has disabilities and uses a wheelchair
I am a person who needs an accessible environment
Struggling for my daughter’s participation in overcoming barriers is part of my daily life
I want to reflect on disability from many intertwined perspectives and suggest that seeing disability as an enchanting thing can lead us to a more sustainable life”
Part of the Rauma Triennial 2025 exhibition will be held at the Art Space Muijala in the village of Reila
The collaboration between Rauma Art Museum and Muijala highlights the importance of new creative and bold initiatives for the accessibility of the art scene and local culture
Roos Hermsen (NL) and Serhii Varlamov (UA)
curate the exhibition and the programme of events at Muijala
The collaboration highlights the importance of art in a rural environment
the effort and difficulty of an isolated location
and the unique environment that can be achieved with a little effort
The first Rauma Triennale took place in 2019
with its roots in Rauma Art Museum’s Rauma Biennale Balticum
The history of the biennale is full of movement and upheaval
but its home has always been the pink museum and the pastel-coloured city surrounding it
The first exhibitions had no common theme and only the coastal towns of the Gulf of Bothnia took part
the Biennale exhibition already included all the countries of the Baltic Sea region
Curatorial responsibility was then taken over by invited curators and common themes highlighted the many realities of the region
The Biennale exhibitions have commented on political upheavals and the pollution of the Baltic Sea
and have provided insights into people’s daily lives and lives at a time when news cameras could not reach across borders
High-quality publications have been an important part of the Biennale exhibitions
the exhibition catalogue has been the responsibility of an invited graphic designer
The values cherished by the Rauma Triennale are community and international exchange in a time of environmental change
These values build on the legacy left by the biennale exhibitions to explore the different people and lifestyles of the common sea
The 33-year-old will suit up in the Finnish Liiga for the remainder of the current season

Home » Rauma shipyard lays keel of Finnish Navy’s first multi-role corvette
The keel of the first Squadron 2020 multi-role corvette was lowered at Rauma shipyard on Thursday 11 April
The traditional keel laying ceremony celebrates in effect the birth of the ship and marks the actual start of construction of the ship’s hull
The keel of a ship and its cradle were lowered on a building trestle inside a construction hall where the ship is being built
two lucky coins were placed under the ship that will remain there once the ship is completed
This is why outsiders were prohibited from also attending the keel laying ceremony
Present in the ceremony were the ordering party
that is the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command
maritime classification society Lloyd’s Reister as well as the Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) management and key employees in the project
“This day celebrates especially the shared work of the entire shipyard
can be seen as a symbol representing the commitment our shipyard and personnel have towards national defence
extensive and open collaboration between the ordering party and all those connected to the project
The collaboration we have achieved is an asset that will ensure a successful outcome,” says Project Director Timo Ståhlhammar
It has been five months since the start of construction
and the operative phase has progressed efficiently
The first part of the keel weighs 56 tonnes
The direct impact the Squadron Project has on employment in Finland is approximately 3,600 person-years
it has built multiple award-winning car and passenger ferries for commercial use: MyStar for Tallink (2022)
Aurora Botnia for Wasaline (2021) and Hammershus for Molslinje (2018)
RMC is building four Pohjanmaa-class multi role corvettes in total for the Finnish Navy
Multi role corvette is a surface combatant capable of effectively conducting a range of Navy tasks at sea all year round
The high-performance vessels are designed to operate in the Baltic Sea year-round in various circumstances
Several vessels have been built at Rauma shipyard over the years for the Finnish Navy to use: four Hamina-class vessels
There have also been several icebreakers and other specialized vessels built at Rauma shipyard
RMC is also constructing two car and passenger ferries for the Australian Spirit of Tasmania
The first vessel was launched in October 2023
The construction of the second vessel’s hull is near completion
RMC has an orderbook of over EUR 1 billion

The Rauma City Council approved the new status plan for Old Rauma on March 31
This status plan supports the cultural heritage of Old Rauma and promotes its development as a vibrant commercial center
Old Rauma is Finland’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest preserved wooden town in the Nordic countries
The new status plan replaces the 1981 plan and also repeals other old status plans
The preparation of the plan has balanced preservation and development
Residents and entrepreneurs in the area have been widely consulted during the planning process
The significance of Old Rauma as a World Heritage Site is considerable
as it represents Nordic wooden town architecture
The new status plan supports its preservation as a lively and respected area in the future
but the project has been beset by problems and delays
ABC wrote that Australian shipping company TT-line paid RMC 81 million Australian dollars (about 50 million euros) in March as the Finnish firm "faced growing financial problems due
to increasing material costs from the war in Ukraine."
The Finnish government then pledged to match this amount
as well as committing to underwrite RMC's future financial viability
RMC is currently building two 'Spirit of Tasmania' ferries for use on the notoriously treacherous Bass Strait between the island of Tasmania and the Australian mainland
the vessels are already behind schedule and construction is being further hampered by the escalating cost of materials due to the war in Ukraine
The first vessel is due to be completed by the end of this year while the second should be ready by spring 2025
The Tasmanian state government is keen to get the orders delivered on time
as delays will result in high additional costs

Rauma ha sabido preservar su antiguo patrimonio arquitectónico de estilo autóctono
Rauma is one of few medieval towns in Finland
which is composed of some 600 buildings constructed of wood
the Old Town is located some 1.5 km inland from the present coastline due to land uplift
Old Rauma is both a commercial and a residential area comprising the town area within the toll boundaries of Rauma in the 19th century
The town plan structure of Rauma has been maintained since the medieval period
and date back between the 18th and 19th centuries
while some cellars remain from earlier houses
The residential houses are placed along the street
and outbuildings such as former animal sheds and granaries are built around narrow courtyards
The present appearance of the buildings is a result of phases of gradual changes and enlargements between the 18th and the late 19th centuries
the increased wealth of the town due to ship trading resulted in the extension and modernisation of residential buildings with decorative exterior panels with Neo-Renaissance details
The commercial area is located along two main streets stretching through the Old Town
forms the main meeting point and commercial place for local people and producers
and the former Town Hall built in 1775-76 in the Market Square are landmarks in the harmonious townscape of one-storey residential and commercial buildings
The architecturally homogenous urban area of Old Rauma is a well preserved and representative example of traditional Nordic wooden town building techniques and traditions
Criterion (iv): The town of Old Rauma constitutes one of the best preserved and most expansive examples of northern European architecture and urbanism
Criterion (v): Old Rauma is an outstanding example of a Nordic city constructed in wood
and acts as a witness to the history of traditional settlements in northern Europe
Old Rauma includes all elements necessary to express its Outstanding Universal Value
namely the entire urban area dating back to between the 17th and 19th centuries
The town includes all elements that contribute to its integrity: the street network
The historic fabric of the city has been built over centuries
as well as the traditional street pavements
The buffer zone of Old Rauma is based on local topography and its scale allows to include all visual and historic elements in the vicinity of the property
Climate change might cause a threat to the integrity of the World Heritage property
The authenticity of Old Rauma is based on the well-preserved historic urban fabric
including different historic layers and building traditions
such as houses for commercial and residential use
The individual houses are well preserved and have been renovated and restored over time
taking into consideration their historic value
The town has maintained a genuine local spirit
Old Rauma has preserved its function as a residential area and commercial centre with its Market Square and a variety of shops along the main streets
The use of traditional building techniques
skills and materials in maintenance and repairs helps preserve the cultural historic spirit of Old Rauma
Old Rauma is protected under the national legislation
The site is managed by a steering group with members of the national and local authorities and a local stakeholder
A local site manager has been appointed by the municipality and works from the Tammela renovation centre
providing services and technical assistance in repairs and renovation to homeowners
This service is free of charge to Old Town citizens
The centre also has a bank of traditional building materials and organizes workshops for local inhabitants to build architectural details
City development is guided by detailed land use plans and cooperation between state authorities and the city
in order to overcome the challenges arising from development pressures
Climate change may threaten individual buildings of Old Rauma
due to increasingly humid and warm winters that lead to a proliferation of harmful insects in wooden structures
The overall management system foresees appropriate follow-up for this issue
TVO has requested a reservation for an industrial plot in the Lakari industrial area for its needs
The decision on whether to grant the reservation will be made by the Rauma city council in its meeting on Monday
TVO is considering building a battery energy storage system on the plot
The image above is from the battery energy storage facility at Olkiluoto
which is in the commissioning phase. The request for a planning reservation was made to Rauma based on a recommendation from the national grid company Fingrid
the battery storage cannot be connected to the Olkiluoto 110 kV switchyard
Rauma is also a good logistical option for TVO's operations
and the City of Rauma has responded positively to TVO's preliminary plans
If TVO decides to proceed with the construction of the new battery energy storage system
it would only be operational several years from now
the new battery energy storage could be operational approximately 2–3 years after signing the delivery agreement
Like the battery energy storage system already located at Olkiluoto
the planned storage could also be integrated into the national grid's protection system
System protection is needed to balance the electricity grid
when Olkiluoto 3 disconnects from the grid unexpectedly during a disturbance.Photo: Tapani Karjanlahti

A keel-laying ceremony for first Fininish Navy Squadron 2020 corvette was held at Rauma shipyard on 11 April
Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) laid the keel for the first Squadron 2020 Pohjanmaa-class multirole corvette on order for the Finnish Navy during a ceremony at its shipyard in Rauma on 11 April
RMC said the yard has been making good progress on the first ship since the first steel was cut on 30 October 2023
“It has been five months since the start of construction
and the operative phase has progressed efficiently,” RMC said
RMC is delivering four Pohjanmaa-class multirole corvettes in total for the Finnish Navy under a EUR647.6 million (USD687.8 million) design and construction contract awarded in 2019 – with the build being carried out by its subsidiary RMC Defence
The corvettes are being constructed in a new covered assembly hall built specifically for the Squadron 2020 programme
measuring 180×40×30 m and with a floor area of about 13,000 m²
the lead ship is expected to start sea trials in 2026
with all four ships to be delivered by 2029
The steel monohull vessels will have an overall length of 117 m
Powered by a combined diesel-electric and gas-turbine propulsion system

Janes Intelligence SummaryA fortnightly update featuring the latest analysis
was formed last September as a spin-off from Aquamaster Rauma
following the latter's takeover by Rolls-Royce
The new com-pany is developing azimuth propulsion units in the range 800kW to 6MW
The units - which are targeted at traditional azimuthing applications such as small-scale work boats and larger DP drillships - are being manufactured under a partnership agreement with Koneistus Riikonen
Although based on a traditional Z-drive mechanical principle
the Steerprop is a new generation system with improved hydrodynamics and advances in seal and lubrication technology
points out Marketing Manager Teuvo Ronkainen
our power range is dictated by the project
Our flexibility means that we can create and develop a product very quickly and to specific requirements."
Two sets have been sold to small river cruise ships incorporating contra-rotating propeller (CRP) technology
and Steerprop plans to offer the same in the offshore sector for deepwater ROVs and supply vessels
"The CRP is the most efficient propulsion system available," Ronkainen claims
"It is especially attractive for the deepwater market as it demonstrates good fuel economy with lower emission levels."
Propeller types - ducted or contra-rotating - are chosen to optimize vessel performance
Ducted propellers are equipped with a new high-performance nozzle (the HJ3) designed by Steerprop for azimuthing propulsion units
Steerprop has also paid attention to ergonomics
and buttons in a wheelhouse layout to improve users' work conditions
Steerprop has sales and servicing agreements for its products in North America with via Louisiana-based Karl Senner
and with two companies in Canada: Emar Services and Summer Equipment
The test swims of the new swimming pool on the Kari campus have been successfully organised
There were about 600 test swimmers in different groups and at different times
The purpose of the test swims was to test the functionality of the hall and to collect feedback from swimmers
There was a lot of good feedback and many suggestions for corrections and improvements
customers said that the new swimming pool is lovely and beautiful
a true spa facility and a diamond in the city’s crown
– Special points for the cold pool and the steam room
The lighting and choice of materials are also really beautiful and give a luxurious feel,” the feedback said
The pool received feedback and suggestions for improvement
some feedback mentioned cool areas and the temperature of the water
Practical requests included the addition of towel hooks
The corrections revealed by the test runs will be carried out in the changing and pool areas before the hall is opened
Finland’s new corvettes are being built indoors
has laid the keel of the country’s first Squadron 2020
Keel-laying is a milestone that celebrates the construction of the hull, in effect the birth of the ship. This comes just after steel was first cut at the end of October 2023
and marks the start of construction after several years of design phase delays
When Rauma was initially contracted for the Squadron 2020 project in September 2019
the Finnish Defence Forces expected the first vessel to enter service in 2023
Present in the ceremony were the ordering party: the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command
the maritime classification society Lloyd’s Register
as well as the Rauma management and key employees in the project
The Squadron 2020 project has employed approximately 3,600 person-years in Finland
Don’t let policy changes catch you off guard
Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis
Rauma was tasked with the construction of four Pohjanmaa-class multi-role corvettes
The development is part of the €1.23bn ($1.36bn) Squadron 2020 project
which will replace eight ageing vessels currently in service within the Finnish Navy; namely the Rauma-class and Hamina-class corvettes that the Nordic nation acquired between 1990-2006
The fleet can be deployed in anti-surface warfare
It is purpose-built to suit the needs of Finland’s operating environment
designed to withstand Baltic temperatures and year-round deployment in icy waters
Each vessel will feature an ice-strengthened hull
suitable for navigation in ice and shallow waters
The hull is powered by a modern propulsion system
which will ensure high speed and low underwater noise levels
The stern side of the hull will contain a flight deck to accommodate a single helicopter or multiple uncrewed aerial vehicles
The vessels will also contain a hangar facility for a helicopter
will have a beam of 16m and a draught of 5m
The corvette displacement will weigh 3,900t
Each ship will be operated by a crew of 70 people while accommodation facilities will be available for up to 120 staff members
Bofors 57mm naval gun will be the main weapon installed on the bow deck
Each vessel will feature two Trackfire remote weapon stations with small
automatic grenade launchers and lightweight medium-calibre cannons
the corvettes will be fitted with the ITO20 surface-to-air missile system
which will integrate Mk41 vertical launchers for firing 32 Evolved SeaSparrow Missiles
Each Pohjanmaa-class corvette will also be armed with eight Gabriel 5 surface-to-surface or anti-ship missiles
As the Finnish Border Guard and Navy are upgrading their primary surface fleet
the naval vessels and surface combatants segment forms the second-largest sector in the Finnish defence market
Worth a total value of $1.23bn from 2023-2028
GlobalData intelligence anticipates the value allocation across the 2023-2028 period to peak in 2025 at $285m

Rauma Museum has been guided by the local tradition of lace-making and the history of the city
The Rauma Art Museum has been promoting the visual arts in the region for over 50 years
The museums merged in 2019 to become the Rauma City Museums
The Rauma Museum was founded in 1891 and is one of the oldest museums in Finland
The museum was founded by private citizens of Rauma
the city of Rauma took over the museum after it was offered by the founders
The first actual exhibition open to the public opened in the Old Town Hall in 1904
The museum had taken over the upper floor of the building in 1902
but it was not immediately possible to open the exhibition to the public on a regular basis
the museum took over the entire Old Town Hall
two new museums were opened: the Kirsti home of sailors and craftsmen in 1979 and the Marela home of shipowners in 1982
Its first curator was the painter Alpo Sarava
who suggested that the museum should be located in the Pinnala buildings in Old Rauma
The museum’s mission is to support and promote the visual arts in the region
It has been closely associated with the visual arts communities in Rauma
the museum is part of the cultural and museum services of the City of Rauma
Now the artists have their very own place to be
The tiling of the swimming pools at the Karin kampus is being replaced due to problems with the tiles’ adhesion
The repair work will start in August and continue until October
The aim is to be able to fill the pools and carry out the necessary tests starting in November and to open the new swimming pool to the public in January 2025
“The City of Rauma and Tiilikaari Oy have agreed on the renovation work in smooth cooperation
Our next step is to work with the contractor
material suppliers and designers to find the best and most efficient way to carry out the necessary repairs,” says Olli-Pekka Kumpula
The entire tiling of the swimming pool hall will not be replaced
but the repairs will focus on tiles that can be found to be loose from the foundation by knock tests
Negotiations have been ongoing between material suppliers
designers and the tiling contractor on how to carry out the repairs
Home » Rauma Marine Constructions signs supply contracts for Squadron 2020 Project
The most crucial contracts for the supply of critical main equipment with long delivery times were signed during spring and summer in highly unusual circumstances. The coronavirus pandemic has posed significant challenges to numerous businesses, including the Squadron 2020 project
we have had to develop new ways of working
which have demanded tenacity and patience from all parties involved
We are very pleased that the contracts for the most vital and time-sensitive equipment procurements for the Finnish Defence Forces’ Squadron 2020 project have now been signed
especially seeing as many shipyards and businesses have unfortunately had to close down completely.”
The most important machinery equipment in the multi-purpose corvettes are the gas turbine
the electric drive system along with the gear system that connects them to the propeller shafts
The electric drive system and the gear system
which is critical to performance and technically challenging
will be supplied by the German company RENK AG
The company has decades of experience in delivering gear systems for combat vessels to nations around the globe
The gas turbines will be supplied by General Electric
The LM2500 gas turbine is the world’s most commonly used gas turbine in naval ships
The Finnish Defence Forces will be the 39th navy in the world to adopt this turbine model
The electrical power will be supplied by extremely quiet 12V 175D diesel generators from MAN Energy Solutions SE
Several important factors were considered when selecting suppliers
These include the power/weight ratio of the engines and gear systems reduced underwater noise
which all play into the operative performance of the vessel
All systems also meet the demands of northern winter and ice-going conditions that are exceptional for warships
The engine and propulsion solution of the Squadron 2020 vessels is a so-called CODELAG (Combined Diesel Electric and Gas) system with two propeller shaft lines
the vessel is driven by electrical engines
which connect to the gear and are powered by the diesel generators
At higher speeds and in heavy ice conditions
a high-power gas turbine is connected to the gear
The systems and suppliers that were selected meet the criteria of national security of supply with which the vessels must comply
The vessels will be serviced in Finland throughout their lifecycle
