Starting with a Cross Test on the hard pack Sipoo motocross track
riders at round three of the ’24 European series then moved to the Enduro Test
a technical and typical Finnish forest challenge
before hitting the hard and rocky Extreme Test for a day of three laps of three tests
Typical both of European Enduro and Finnish events
day one was a tough one for 100-plus riders with long and tehnical tests (check the onboard video below) leaving the organisers to shorten the Sunday to two laps for the women
Finnish rider Roni Kytonen returned to the European Championship after five years and despite a fall in the last special test took victory on his home round
the two Atomic Moto team riders Anthony Geslin and Diego Haution battled all day to finish separated by just 10 seconds in the last test
On day two the Johansson MPE Enduro team rider again claimed the victory
this time ahead of a resurgent rides from Daniel Mundell and Junior rider Matej Skuta completing the overall podium
In the class battles Kytonen was naturally the dominant force in E1 class
ahead of championship leader Davide Soreca and Davide Mei on both days
In the E2 class British rider Alex Walton got the better of Eemil Pohjola and Daniel Mundell
On day two Dan Mundell turned it around to beat compatriot Walton with Pohjola dropping to third
Anthony Geslin dominated the E3 class on both days
winning over Mattia Capuzzo and Robert Riedel on day one with the same paring switching places behind the Frenchman on the Sunday podium
An adrenaline-filled finale in the Junior 1 class on day one saw Pyry Juupaluoma overtaking championship leader Killian Lunier who fell in the last special
Day two in the Junior 1 class saw Frenchman Killian Lunier return to the top step of the podium
winning ahead of a pair of Finns Tiitus Enjala and Albert Juhola
winning by a margin of 1 minute and 28 seconds over Italian Riccardo Fabris with Matyas Chlum third
Championship leader Matej Skuta had bike problems in the Extreme Test
Matej Skuta took back first place by a razor-thin margin
ahead of Frenchman Diego Haution (Team Atomic) and Matyas Chlum
Riccardo Pasquato won a very close battle on both days bettering Gabin Allemand by just two seconds on day one with Juho Ahokas completing the podium which was repeated on day two
The tough route and the demanding special tests put the ladies of the European Enduro to the test
Zuzana Unger stopped the clock first on day one with Viivi-Maria Makine second and Mauricette Brisebard third
Meanwhile reigning German champion Tanja Schlosser is out of the running after breaking her humerus bone in a crash
Day two in the Women’s class saw Sara Traini achieved her first European victory
ahead of Mauricette Brisebard and Viivi-Maria Mäkinen
In the Seniors the Italian Maurizio Micheluz achieved his fifth consecutive victory on day one ahead of the experienced Finns Marko Tarkkala and Mika Karma
A sprocket problem for Micheluz on the special test cost the points leader a stack of time
handing victory to Tarkkala followed by Juha Puotsaari and Mika Karma for an all-Finnish podium
The 24MX Enduro European Championship returns on the first weekend of November in Wolterdorf
where the champions of the 2024 season will be crowned

‘Savijärvi Top Driving is a CAI2* competition so drivers without international experience are also allowed to take part in the event
This way all the Finnish drivers have the possibility to take part in a high class competition,’ says Ben Simonsen
‘CAI3* competitions need even more and bigger arrangements and it has been quite enough as it is
Our volunteers have done a great job for us in order to be able to compete in a fairly good competition
and that is something that makes the organisers happy.’
‘We have so many international competitors that we will have 75 horses in the competition,’ says Tapani Peltonen
‘This makes it the biggest driving competition that has been organised in Finland
Big and highly competitive teams from Norway
Sweden and Finland take part in the event.’
Most of the Finnish top drivers come to Sipoo and it looks like there will be a tough competition in the main classes

The Sipoo round of the 2021 domestic series in Finland was a good one: great weather in the region just outside Helsinki and a great comeback ride from Eero Remes who got the better of the youngsters
overnight rain before the race made the tests really slippery in the morning and Remes lost almost one minute on the extreme test
But the TM rider has been in good form in recent EnduroGP rounds (in Estonia and Sweden) and came good after that to haul back the time difference and squeeze it by just one second ahead of Eemil Pohjola
he took the E3 championship two rounds early after a dominant season
Hugo Svärd was third on his 125cc Fantic

🔥Lemminkäisen temppeli. Edesmennyt opas, shamaani ja joogi Ior Bock tarinoi 1980-luvulla sukunsa mailla Sipoossa...

A team of amateur treasure hunters in Finland claim to be on the brink of discovering the world's largest treasure trove, worth over $28.5 billion.
The real-life hunt for fabled treasure has taken the group of treasure hunters decades.
However, 34 years after first hearing about the"Temple Lemminkäinen" hoard, they are just metres away from completing the excavation east of Helsinki.
Burial mounds and Viking treasure are not unheard of in Northern Europe and Scandinavia, however the Lemminkäinen hoard is something else.
Detailed descriptions of the hoard list treasures including 50,000 precious gems and lifesize statues made of 18-carat solid gold.
If found, it would be the most valuable trove ever discovered.
For the international dig team in the Sibbosberg cave system, it has been a long, painstaking process involving heavy machinery and manual labour.
But the excavators who call themselves 'Temple Twelve' are following little more than a hunch.
Canadian author Carl Borgen who joined the dig in 1987 has detailed his involvement in his new book, Temporarily Insane.
The excavations are on the family property of tour guide and mystic, Ior Bock. The unorthodox character, Bock was able through sheer conviction, folklore and cult of personality to convince a collection of rag-tag treasure hunters to follow him to Finland.
Having first learned about the treasure in Goa, from Finnish expats, he joined the excavation to see for himself.
Digging in the cave networks on the Bock's family estate, it is an annual undertaking that has drawn treasure hunters from all over the world.
Each summer the excavations continue a little further into the network and - possibly - closer to the riches.
Talking to The Mirror the author said he "spoke to them only last week and it is now their strong belief that, after more than 34 years of digging, they are now within metres of the temple entrance."
Bock was murdered in 2010 after a dispute with two assistants. Stabbed at his home in Munkkiniemi, SK24 reported that the motive was unknown.
Still, each summer after pumping 1.5 million litres of water out of the waterlogged tunnel system, the digs continue to this day.
"I understand that significant progress at the temple has been made and that the crew are feeling especially excited about the months ahead," Borgen told The Mirror.
"There is now talk in the camp of being on the brink of a major breakthrough, which in real terms could be the discovery of the world's largest and most valuable treasure trove."
Not all middle-age burial mounds are so tough to excavate, for so little reward.
On Wednesday, a Norfolk treasure hoard was declared to be the largest discovery of its kind. Over 130 gold coins had been extracted from the Anglo-saxon burial mound over the past 30 years.
The treasure dated back 1400 years was mostly uncovered by a single, anonymous metal detectorist between 1991 and 2020.
However, they may not be able to keep the loot. Under the 1996 Treasure Act any find of precious metals unclaimed for more than 300 years are defined as property of the Crown.
In 2017 policeman David Cockle was jailed for 16 months for trying to sell coins from the hoard illegally, reported the Guardian.
The Sutton Hoo regional park is famous for burial mounds and was recently the setting for 2021 Netflix drama The Dig, starring Ralph Fiennes.
Kiwis can book seats on the newly announced flights from today.
Bad Left Hook welcomes back Ted "The Bull" Sares for another feature. This time, Ted looks back at a 1983 fight between Tony Sibson and John Collins.
He [John Collins] could put you to sleep with a right hand.
I don't know where he got that from, unless he's just using it to psych himself up...All I've said was that I'm excited about fighting him because I think he's the best middleweight...
After watching David Lemieux recently dismantle Elvin Ayala in Montreal, I was reminded of another compact, strong fighter with a somewhat hunched stance and that was Tony Sibson who fought in the 1970s and 1980s and was regarded as one of Britain's best. He was Commonwealth and European champion and a serious world title challenger
His next fight would be against John Collins in Atlantic City on October 8, 1983.
Like Sibson, Chicagoan Collins had a stellar amateur record and got off to a great pro start winning his first 29, 25 by way of stoppage. Most of his fights did not go beyond the third canto, and this may have contributed to his later downfall. Among his victims were Teddy Mann, a fading Oscar Albarado (58-11-1 at the time), undefeated fellow Chicagoan Lenny Lapaglia (19-0), and a prime Kenny Whetstone (23-1).
When he fought in the Windy City, the good looking and tall (6'1") Collins had the appeal of a rock star. Indeed, he brought out the City's South Side Irish in droves. When his fights began, the place would erupt into chants of "Collins! Collins! Collins!" The fans would go wild when he put together slick combinations and landed his signature straight-right cross which carried menace and finality when it connected flush.
Collins was the undefeated favorite when he met Sibbo who was coming off the aforementioned loss to Hagler. A win by the Collins could well position him for a big pay day fight against the Marvelous one, but it was not to be.
The second round began as the first ended and it was clear Collins had not fully recuperated. Sibbo quickly sent Collins down with a powerful straight right and then finished him off with a series of short but effective shots that sent him sprawling across the ring and then onto the canvas for the third and final time in the fight.
It had been a Chicago-style mugging, but this mugger was not a Chicagoan.

The new wings create small learning courtyards between the old and the new school. The extension also gives the complex a new lower front facade, which is playful and introduces a child scale to the large building complex. The aim of the competition was to create a learning environment corresponding to the new Finnish Curriculum. Sipoonlahti is one of the early examples of this since the new curriculum was just released in 2016.

utilizing new logistics technologies and know-how provided by a partner as well as the need of companies to focus on their own core business
companies are well-advised to ensure a sufficient warehousing buffer
they should have products in warehouses that are geographically located in Finland to reduce their dependence on imports in exceptional circumstances
The facility built in Sipoo is specifically designed for the needs of import
The decision regarding the ability to control temperature in the warehouse will be made at the start of the year.”
There is a plan in place to invest EUR 2 million in so-called green energy solutions during the construction stage
we will make choices regarding the building’s energy-efficiency and CO2 emissions
we will utilize geothermal heat solutions for heating the building and solar power for producing electricity
Controlling the technical systems of the property will be largely based on advanced automation solutions to ensure the energy-efficient use of the property
All energy which is not produced on-site will be purchased as carbon-free energy,” says Kiiskinen

the warehouse will have 28 loading docks for articulated vehicles and 10 loading docks for vans
Transval’s new warehouse in Sipoo will provide jobs for 100 logistics professionals

All energy which is not produced on-site will be purchased as carbon-free energy
The area of the plot purchased from the municipality of Sipoo is 6.5 ha
Will employ approximately 70–100 logistics professionals
The total investment in the construction project is over EUR 37 million
of which the purchase price of the plot constitutes EUR 2.4 million

police sayInvestigators believe that a pay dispute prompted a man to murder his boss before later killing himself during a Helsinki police raid
a portfolio manager with the pensions insurance firm Ilmarinen
was suspected of shooting his former boss at his Sipoo home last July
The murder suspect took his own life as police raided his apartment to take him into custody on suspicion of murder
He shot at police through the door before shooting and killing himself
A preliminary inquiry has now revealed that the murder suspect had used magnets to attach two tracking devices to a car used by a colleague
Police investigated the case as plotting aggravated offences against a person’s life or health
He had also monitored his supervisor’s movements with tracking devices
Police found that based on location data stored in the device
it had been attached to the man’s car for more than a month before the murder was committed
However the tracking device had been de-activated immediately after the crime
technical investigations revealed that the man had been using his phone to communicate with the devices from as early as March 2017
leading police to conclude that he had been planning to commit the act for a long time
Police discovered that the murder suspect and the person he had been tracking had been in the same team for three years at Ilmarinen
The Ilmarinen employee told investigators that there had been no major differences or bad blood between the suspect and his supervisor prior to the shooting
However he added that he had the impression that the portfolio manager didn’t like him
The murder suspect had left his job at Ilmarinen at the beginning at 2016 and the workmate told police that he hadn’t seen him since then
nor was he able to say why the suspect had fitted his car with a tracking device
Police also asked the Ilmarinen employee about the suspect’s behaviour and the reasons for his dismissal
however he said that the man’s supervisor had a mentoring approach to others in the workplace
"He also collected tax data from others and used it in his salary negotiations
He must have thought that he was not appreciated so he left for greener pastures
but perhaps he was not successful after all," the employee added
According to information gathered by police
the suspect was not able to settle into a permanent job after leaving his position at Ilmarinen
The suspect’s colleague said he’d noticed that the man became agitated when other workmates laughed at news reports that the founder of the anti-immigrant website MV-lehti has been convicted for a number of offences
"It seemed quite odd because in our field we always look for objective information from different sources and reading that publication seemed far from it," the employee noted
He said that it was very difficult to understand why the suspect would have wanted to kill anyone
Police ended the investigation into the murder after the suspect committed suicide
They said they could find no other motive for the murder than the suspect’s dissatisfaction with his boss
The murder suspect and his victim had had no dealings after he left the firm and there was no evidence of contact between them
However sources in the suspect’s circles and emails he sent hinted at his resentment
the man described his discontentment with his salary
the man he later murdered at the victim’s Sipoo home
"I argued with my supervisor that my pay is the same as it was four years ago when I was the most junior member of the team
at least in terms of experience and my time in the team," he wrote at the time
The suspect also wrote that – according to his interpretation – his supervisor had promised him a raise
According the email the suspect’s supervisor had also declared that the man’s current salary was in line with his responsibilities
tasks and goals and that his starting pay may have been too high
"It felt like something that you would never believe
this makes me feel that the situation has become unbearable," the suspect wrote

Tokmanni store chain will grow strongly this year as well
New Tokmanni stores were celebrated in Pälkäne and Söderkulla in Sipoo already in April
Nikkilä in Sipoo and Sodankylä will take place at the end of this year
Tokmanni now announces that it has entered into an agreement whereby it will relocate its Tokmanni store from the Espoontori shopping centre to the nearby Entresse shopping centre in Espoo
Tokmanni also announces that it is withdrawing from the store project in Keljo district of Jyväskylä and closing its Miny store in the Lippulaiva shopping centre in Espoo
Instead of the store project in the Keljo district
Tokmanni has invested in its other Tokmanni stores in Jyväskylä
In Espoo, Tokmanni has entered into a long-term lease agreement for a store to be opened in the Entresse shopping centre in the Espoon keskus district
Tokmanni’s goal is to celebrate the opening of the new Tokmanni store in the shopping centre in October-November this year
The new store will replace the current Tokmanni store located in the nearby Espoontori shopping centre
The Espoontori store will be closed at the end of July due to the expiration of the lease
There will be around 2,000 square metres of space in new Entresse store
while the current Espoontori store has around 1,300 square metres of space
the new store will replace the existing one
The openings of the latest new Tokmanni stores were celebrated in Pälkäne and Söderkulla in Sipoo at the beginning of April. In the Columbus shopping centre in Vuosaari in Helsinki
the variety discount retailer closed its Tokmanni store in mid-April due to the expiration of the lease
Tokmanni announced already in 2022 that it is planning a new Tokmanni store to be built in the Keljo district of Jyväskylä
and now Tokmanni informs that it is withdrawing from the Keljo project completely
“The reasons for withdrawing from the project are the changes that occurred during the planning phase of the project and increased the costs,” Koponen says
after the announcement of the Keljo store project
acquired the business operations of Jyskän Varastomyymälä Oy in the Jyskä district
Tokmanni has also integrated the Jyskän Varastomyymälä store into the Tokmanni store chain and renewed it in line with the Tokmanni brand
Tokmanni expanded and renewed its Tokmanni store in Seppälänkangas district
There will also be a shop-in-shop department in the new Tokmanni store opening next autumn in the Entresse shopping centre
Similar Miny shop-in-shop departments can already be found in more than 40 Tokmanni stores across Finland
Tokmanni Group is actively developing its store network in all its operating countries
as many as six new Tokmanni stores will be opened in Finland this year
In Pälkäne and Söderkulla in Sipoo
the store openings have already been celebrated
but elsewhere new stores are still eagerly awaited
Tokmanni Group’s store network will continue to grow and renew both in Finland and in Sweden and Denmark
Click Shoes will continue to actively look for new store locations
The logistics centre entered the competition with a project entitled ‘Overall energy management of S Group's logistics centre for grocery products’
the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment
the Energy Authority and the state-owned sustainable development company Motiva awarded the prize to three sustainable projects that are examples of solutions that improve energy efficiency and recycle waste energy
The jury emphasised the long-term and multifaceted work done at S Group's logistics centre for grocery products to improve energy efficiency: “The combined energy-efficient solutions in Finland’s largest logistics centre are a good example of how the appropriate use of energy can be advanced step by step in a comprehensive manner,” the jury says
Energy Manager Miika Kakko from SOK Kiinteistöässä also points out that the energy management of the logistics centre is holistic and energy consumption has been reduced there in many different ways
we have increased energy recycling in heating to more than 50 percent
which has reduced the need for heat energy produced by combustion
We have also built one of Finland’s largest solar power plants and electricity batteries.”
In addition to the solar power plants and batteries
the logistics centre has made a number of other investments to reduce energy consumption and emissions
a 1 MW high-temperature heat pump was installed in the centre
Heat recovery from refrigeration equipment is used as heat source
This has enabled us to reduce the use of wood pellets and fuel oil
which we used to use as a back-up energy source
by 5,000-6,000 megawatt hours per year," says Mr Kakko
a snow melting system based on weather forecasts was also brought into use
which helps to adjust the heating in front of the loading docks to suit the conditions and reduces the need for maintenance heating
The innovation reduces heat consumption by 500–1,000 megawatt hours per year
A lighting renovation is underway at the logistics centre for grocery products
where the conventional lighting installed during the construction of the logistics centre will be replaced by LED lighting The lighting renovation will both reduce the electricity consumption of lighting and reduce the need for cooling caused by lighting
This will reduce annual electricity consumption between 3,500–4,000 MWh
the grocery trade logistics centre is already carbon emission-free
in 2020 the share of energy sources with carbon emissions was less than one per mille
Kakko emphasises that the development in Sipoo is well in line with S Group’s adopted goal of being carbon negative by 2025 in own operations (scope 1 and 2)
The Energy Genius of the Year 2021 awards were announced on Thursday 9 December at a webinar on new ideas for energy efficiency for 2022 in Helsinki

The stomach bug found in swimmers across the country continues to puzzle experts
While nearly one thousand people have already fallen ill with the mysterious viral disease in Tampere
reports of similar cases continue to emerge also from Sipoo
Stool samples taken from patients in the Pirkanmaa region last Friday have been sent for analysis to HUS Laboratories
with the results expected by Friday afternoon
Tests conducted on water samples taken from lakes linked to the cases
have yet to provide any indication as to the cause of the outbreak
With the majority of recent reports concerning the last weekend of July
the head of the Environmental and Health Department of Tampere
Tampere has decided to uphold the swimming bans imposed on beaches linked to the outbreak until further notice
it has also been confirmed that people infected with the virus can transmit it to others
considers it unlikely that the illness is carried by birds
and viruses found in birds can't transmit to people,” she points out
the cause of the outbreak is likely to be related to people
The lakes may have been contaminated by bodily excretions
while the risk of transmission was heightened due to the number of people at beaches
experts believe norovirus to be the cause of the illness
“It may also be another virus,” Räsänen reminds
“This is absolutely exceptional,” Bojang comments on the epidemic
a number of factors have probably contributed to the outbreak: the hot holiday weather has brought several people to beaches
where maintaining good hygiene is not easy
and the cleanliness of facilities and waste management is often insufficient
nearly 200 people had fallen ill with a stomach bug in Sipoo after swimming in lake Pilvijärvi

Helsingin Sanomat reports on the growing popularity of Estonian robots in Finland
the expansion of Estonian companies into Finland has been significant
This success is the result of long-term efforts
the head of the Estonian Trade Representative Office in Helsinki
Today, Starship's robots are operational in more than 14 Finnish cities
the robots operate under the Alepa and Sale brands rather than the Starship name
the expansion aims to reach 100 S-Group stores
and emission-free solution for food delivery
The latest destinations for Estonian robots in Finland include Salo, Karkkila, Sipoo, and Lohja. Additionally, the Estonian company Auvetech has sent a self-driving minibus to Makkarajärvenkatu in Tampere, which will start operating on route 301 from the Lintuhytini residential area to the Hervantajärvi tram stop. The bus, produced by Auvetech OÜ in Tallinn in collaboration with Tallinn University of Technology
accommodates six passengers and initially includes a safety driver to assist if necessary
The previous model of this autonomous minibus
operated on the same route for eight months and will now serve as a backup vehicle
The spread of Estonian robotics firms in Finland indicates a broader shift in business relations between Finland and Estonia
but now the trend is reversing with businesses expanding from Estonia to Finland
"This is the result of long-term efforts by the companies," says Pilvi Hämäläinen
adding that Estonian firms have managed to grow and expand despite negative economic growth
Starship's headquarters are in San Francisco
with manufacturing in Tallinn and maintenance in Espoo
Starship Technologies was founded by Estonian Ahti Heinla and Dane Janus Friis
The success of Skype brought numerous investors to Estonia and encouraged many to innovate

Liike Nyt chairman Harry "Hjallis" Harkimo in Helsinki on 3 February 2025
leader of Liike Nyt and candidate for mayor of Helsinki
appears to have his registered residence in the city listed on Airbnb
Official records show that Harkimo and his son
are registered at a luxury apartment on Topeliuksenkatu in Töölö
neighbours report that the property is regularly rented out and has been the site of disruptive parties
must be a resident of Helsinki to be eligible for the mayoralty
his listed address is available for short-term rental on Airbnb under the host name "Leo." Leo Harkimo
appears to be the person managing the listing
as the profile photo matches public images of him
Photos on the Airbnb listing also match known images of the apartment
The property is advertised as a "presidential apartment," a reference to Harkimo’s past presidential candidacy and to Lauri Kristian Relander
The apartment remained available for rent on Airbnb until early April
Residents of the building confirmed to Helsingin Sanomat (HS) that the apartment has been used for short-term rentals and that disturbances have occurred
chairman of the building’s housing association board
stated that only one apartment in the building is listed on Airbnb and that he has understood it to be "continuously available for rent." Neighbours say that both Harry and Joel Harkimo are rarely seen in the building
who has lived in the building for seven years
says he has only encountered Harry Harkimo "a few times."
The housing association has sought to end Airbnb activity in the building due to disturbances caused by renters
Residents have complained about parties lasting until the early hours
others have hosted loud weekend gatherings
Tuomisto noted that there have been "a few such events in the past year."
Some neighbours allege that tenants of the Airbnb apartment have sold nitrous oxide canisters and that police were called to break up a New Year’s Eve party
Tuomisto confirmed that police had intervened in a party but said it was unclear which apartment was involved
He added that a large number of nitrous oxide canisters had been removed from the stairwell at a resident’s request
It remains unknown to whom the canisters belonged
and no further investigation was conducted
Another resident reported that smoke had spread into the stairwell from the Harkimos’ apartment when renters used the fireplace
Tuomisto confirmed that some fireplaces in the building are banned from use but could not verify which apartment was responsible
When HS visited the apartment and rang the doorbell
Harry Harkimo denied that the apartment had been rented on Airbnb for some time
"It was rented out when we lived in Sipoo during the summer
I enjoy living there," he said via text message
and bookings could be made through the platform
When asked directly if he was currently living there full-time
Harkimo responded that he was aware of the listing but that a third party managing the rental had been instructed to stop bookings
but I will tell them to remove it," he said
When asked when the apartment was last rented
Harkimo admitted it had been in use in the autumn but could not recall the exact date
Airbnb reviews left by guests indicate that the apartment had recent visitors
Two additional reviews were left in December
Airbnb’s policy allows guests to leave reviews within 14 days of checkout
confirming that rentals were ongoing until early 2025
the Airbnb listing for the apartment disappeared from the platform

"A new study proposes combining the five municipalities of the Metropolitan area
The ministry of finance launched a specific inquest of the division of municipalities in the Helsinki metropolitan area in December 2013
The inquest report was published on Friday
Those investigating the division of municipalities in the metropolitan area Mikko Pukkinen
Cay Sevón and Matti Vatilo propose combining the five municipalities to create a new metropolitan city
They also suggested including the Southern part of Tuusula
which has resources to take care of the well-being of its citizens
is culturally open and invigorating and takes responsibility of the international success of Finland," Pukkinen writes in the bulletin
The metropolitan city would consist of 15-20 service districts
which would have elected district councils or boards elected by the council of the metropolitan city
The metropolitan city would be responsible for the main policies concerning the economy
planning land usage and ordering and producing social and health services
The governments of the municipalities will gather the opinions of the citizens and take the proposition to the disposal of the council in February-March."

The pale green areas are blue-green algae mixed into the water of the Baltic Sea
Image: Original bild: © ESA Copernicus Sentinel-3 Data
Finlands miljöcentral(2019)Yle News22.8.2019 18:43Toxic blue-green algae
has been unusually rare on Finnish inland waters this summer despite spells of hot weather that usually trigger the growth of surface algal blooms
the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) has detected fewer cyanobacterial blooms on Finnish lakes and sea districts
cyanobacteria are mostly mixed into the water
but there are some surface blooms in southern and southwestern regions
Meanwhile the incidence of cyanobacteria in lakes has dropped significantly
"Usually blue-green algae is at its heaviest in Finnish lakes in August
but this summer levels in August are lower than at any time in the 20 years of national monitoring," says Marko Järvinen
head of SYKE's algal bloom monitoring unit
This week blue-green algae has been detected at 30 observation points around the country
At six of them the level was rated as abundant
with one classified as 'very abundant'
a lake between the eastern city of Lappeenranta and the Russian border
Most of the 'abundant' spots are in the south and southwest
Järvinen attributes the paucity of blooms to unsettled weather
Meanwhile low levels of rain means that less nutrients have been washed in from lakes' watershed areas
Although blue-green algae levels have declined
he says it's too early to declare the season over
"Blue-green algae is now mixed into the water
it will collect on the surface again," Järvinen predicts
the blue-green algae situation can vary significantly even between places close to each other and can change quickly," adds another SYKE researcher
"Blue-green algae may form different types of toxins and agents that irritate the skin

Image: Irene Stachon / LehtikuvaYle News3.8.2018 17:17Police in Helsinki say that the man who killed himself during a downtown raid on Thursday was the main suspect in the murder of a man last week in Sipoo
The Helsinki police department's chief preliminary investigator Mikko Minkkinen told Yle the suspect killed himself as police tried to apprehend him on Thursday evening on Kasarmikatu in downtown Helsinki
"It became clear late on Thursday afternoon that the man was likely behind the murder in Sipoo," Minkkinen said
Minkkinen said the man fired a gun at police as officers approached him at his apartment on Kasarmikatu
Officers found the man dead upon entering his apartment
Minkkinen said the man had taken his own life
Police had also detained a few other suspects in the Sipoo killing earlier on Thursday
but they have since been released and are no longer under investigation
Police said they believe the suspect had long held a grudge against a 49-year-old man
and that he killed the man in Sipoo last week
Police had previously confirmed the two men worked at the same insurance firm
the Ilmarinen Mutual Pension Insurance Company
Citing information acquired from the insurance firm
Yle reported Friday that the deceased Sipoo man had been the suspect's boss at the company
Helsingin Sanomat has reported that the murder victim in Sipoo had been tied up and shot
but Minkkinen said those reports came from other sources and declined to confirm it
"I have not commented on that [piece of information]
I have only confirmed that the victim was shot," Minkkinen said
Since the other suspects in the Sipoo killing have been interviewed and cleared of suspicion
investigators will draw their conclusions about the case from other evidence gathered in the probe
Investigations surrounding the death of the man in Helsinki will likely continue for some time
"We will write up a preliminary investigation report
but since the main suspect is dead the case will never go to court if we receive additional confirmation that the individual acted alone," Minkkinen said
