with almost nothing to split the sides in terms of possession and shots
but the difference-maker arrived in first-half stoppage time
On the second wave of attack, KuPS worked the ball out to Otto Ruoppi, whose square ball across the penalty box was helped on by Jaakko Oksanen to Agon Sadiku
The home side had the better of the late chances, as SJK could not force a late equaliser and have now taken one point from their last two games after starting the season with four wins in a row
SJK's loss leaves Inter Turku as the only other unbeaten side left this season, and they moved to within two points of the Seinajoki club with one fewer match played after a 1-1 draw with HJK
Having finally got off the mark in the Veikkausliiga last time, Teemu Pukki made it two in two midway through the first half by timing his run to perfection and lashing a finish past goalkeeper Eetu Huuhtanen
But 17 minutes from time, the Helsinki side threw away the win when a dreadful pass from goalkeeper Thijmen Nijhuis was intercepted by Loic Essomba
but have only four points and sit 10th of 12 teams
AC Oulu are still bottom of the pile, but are now just a point behind HJK after ending their five-match losing run with a 3-1 win over 10-man KTP
A terrible first half for KTP saw Joona Toivio score an own goal and Jiri Koski sent off, before Justin Rennicks and Marokhy Ndione eventually made the man advantage count in the final 12 minutes
Armaan Wilson scored a consolation in added time for KTP
After three successive wins, it's back-to-back defeats for Ilves, who remain fourth after losing 1-0 to VPS late on
In the 93rd minute, Nicolas Fleuriau arrived at the back post to control a cross and bury a finish at the near post for VPS' second win of the campaign
Jaro picked up their first points since matchday one with a 1-0 away win over Haka
The new boys left things late as well - seconds after Haka's Nicolas Gianini Dantas was red carded in the 87th minute, Jaro capitalised when Severi Kahkonen's strike nestled in the bottom corner
Finally, Gnistan earned their second win of the season and went above opponents Mariehamn into eighth place with a lightning start in a 2-0 home win
A poacher's finish after three minutes and a low strike from the edge of the area after six minutes, both from Vertti Hanninen

The yard which has a long heritage in the cruise ship sector was acquired in 2014 by Germany’s Meyer family which was best known for Meyer Werft in Papenburg
The family reports it has invested over €300 million in the development of the shipyard after acquiring it from STX
They highlight that it delivered at least one large cruise ship a year during the decade working with customers TUI’s Mein Schiff
Tim Meyer took over as CEO in 2020 after being a managing director at the Papenburg yard since 2016
He replaced his brother Jan Meyer who had been CEO of Meyer Turku for two years since 2014
The company highlighted recently that Tim Meyer had been successful in returning the shipyard to profitability
He cited efforts to develop the organization
implement a new enterprise resource planning system
Revenues are reported to have grown from €500 million to €2 billion
The pandemic placed a strain on the operations but both the yards in Turku and Papenburg were able to retain their orders
Papenburg however required a financial bailout from the German government last year and as part of the deal the Meyer family ceded ownership of the yard but it still retains 100 percent ownership of Turku
Tim Meyer said in the press release he would be focusing on the development and strategies of the shipyard and the family’s other businesses
Jan Meyer had shifted to a business development role at Papenburg
while their father Bernard Meyer has stepped down from the management of both shipyards
we have found an exceptional leader with years of experience from various industries such as construction,” said board chairman Eskola
“I already have experience from successfully working together with him in a company majority owned by a family.”

Following the delivery of the Icon of the Seas cruise ship last year
Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku has signed a brand-new agreement with the US-based cruise company Royal Caribbean International to build the fourth Icon class vessel
The agreement between Meyer Turku and Royal Caribbean
does not just encompass the construction of the fourth vessel; under the contract
Meyer Turku is also set to build the fifth and sixth vessels of the series
Meyer Turku CEO Tim Meyer stated: “This order is an important milestone for the future of shipbuilding in the maritime network in Finland
This is yet another recognition of the professionalism of our personnel and of our leadership in the maritime industry’s innovation and green transition.”
To remind, in late 2023, Meyer Turku delivered the LNG-powered newbuilding Icon of the Seas to Royal Caribbean Internationalâa feat which Meyer then called ‘a significant step toward green transition‘
The inaugural vessel in the Icon class series
possesses a gross tonnage of 248,655 tones
accommodating up to 7,600 passengers as well as 2,350 crew members
The vessel is equipped with fuel cell technology
which enable it to turn waste heat into around 3MW of extra energy
Icon of the Seas also has an air lubrication system for the underwater hull
reducing friction by sending millions of microscopic bubbles alongside the hull
The Star of the Seas, Meyer Turku’s third LNG-powered ship, will soon join Icon of the Seas, as well as an Oasis Class vessel, slated for delivery in the summer of 2025. It is scheduled to debut from Port Canaveral, Florida.
In related news, Meyer WerftâMeyer Turkuâs parent companyâreceived a contract earlier this month to build four additional ships that will join Disney Cruise Lineâs fleet between 2027 and 2031.

A study in the relationship between visual art and architecture, and between a home and its natural surroundings, Jan-Erik Andersson’s practice envisions the idea of an inhabitable Total Artwork. The Finnish artist’s Life on a Leaf
and Sounding Dome Sauna in Turku explore how contemporary architecture should deviate from prevalent principles of rationalism and conformity to fulfil
Andersson looks to the iconicism of the 19th century Arts and Craft movement and the ornamentation and organic forms of Art Nouveau
‘As an artist who grew up among Modernism
I have asked myself one question many times: why do we not see
it doubles as a musical installation with soundscapes activated when water is thrown on the heater
the trio of structures question: ‘Can you live in a picture or a sculpture?’

supporting his ideology that spaces must tell the tales of those who inhabit them
Jan-Erik Andersson explores the relationship between art
The Sounding Dome Sauna was created in collaboration with American sound artist Shawn Decker during Turku’s European Cultural Capital 2011 activities
While recalling the Orthodox church cupolas in Russia
it follows Andersson’s vision to bring iconic
stylized forms from nature into the built environment
Inside the fiberglass envelop shaped like a garlic bulb
and sound engulf sauna-goers from all around
A soundscape is driven by heating and cooling cycles with separate sounds for each
ranging from meditative hums and gushes of wind to the wilder rumbles of machinery and large ship horns
The sounds are emitted from the top or filtered down inside each of the garlic cloves which act like acoustical parabolical reflectors
the sauna welcomed visitors as it sat beside an outdoor swimming pool and has since hosted various activations and been the subject of several documentary series

AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function

There aren’t many cities that can confidently claim they’ll reach climate neutrality by 2029
reaching net-zero on the year marking the city’s 800th birthday
Turku’s most ambitious climate endeavours go beyond technological solutions and policy changes
The city is embarking on a transformative journey to reshape the mindsets of its citizens
Through the innovative ‘1.5-Degree City’ project
Turku is weaving climate action into the fabric of daily life
collective changes that ripple through the community
supporting the city in developing the capabilities and learning mindset needed to reach its ambitious goals
Turku is the oldest city in Finland, dating back to 1229. It has occasionally enjoyed administrative supremacy, having also been the countryâs first capital. Its ambitious climate plan is often held up as exemplary. Between 1990 and 2023, the city already reduced its carbon emissions by 63%.
âSometimes in Turku we say that we are more famous internationally for our climate work than locally
The 1.5-Degree City project aims to communicate our emission reduction actions and goals widely to Turku citizens,â points out Heli Huuskonen
Project Manager of the 1.5-Degree City Project in Turku
Among the cityâs climate-related successes are a climate-neutral district heating system
resulting from years of investment in clean energy
a range of sustainable energy solutions that meaningfully reduced the use of fossil fuels (in 2022
78% of the district heating system came from renewable sources)
Staying on track for the 2029 target in the future will require further decarbonisation of the cityâs energy sources
as well as even more efficient measures in transport
Turkuâs envious track record has brought benefits to companies
and the entire city according to Huuskonen â but there is still a considerable effort required to meet their targets
consumer-related emissions from mobility and transportation
and waste and water usage remain a major roadblock to achieving climate neutrality
The city has no direct control over these as they are mostly dictated by consumer habits and behaviour
âWe are not as far in our journey as weâd like to be with transportation
these are the sectors that are the most challenging for us
but if we want to reach climate neutrality
we need to change more than energy and mobility systems
âWe need to change the mentality here in the city administration
indicative of the lifestyle it is aiming to foster
this change of mentality is very important
âOur Pilot City project is a tiny piece of the puzzle that will help us understand what the opportunities are for behaviour change in making climate-neutral Turku possible.âÂ
the city has experience in engaging citizens
Learning how to do this not only holds potential for decreases in emissions
but is also essential in targeting domains for which the city has no control over
To succeed in their ambitious climate goals
the city is banking on increased involvement from all local actors
targeting a whole-of-society shift in mindset
The â1.5-Degree Cityâ Pilot places the city as the facilitator of cooperation
the project has been designed to foster cross-sector collaboration in climate work
companies and citizens in as partners with the common goal of a climate-neutral city
theyâll increase their ability to deliver a robust policy framework
âWe canât work successfully on our own â we need to collaborate with companies
Thatâs why we joined the EU Mission and the Pilot Cities Programme
to network and learn from each other,â says Huuskonen
Access to useful information and strong communication is key: the first component of the pilot
on the one hand centralises information for different target groups such as citizens
and provides useful information on climate work from different sectors
it functions as a strong tool for communication
building awareness and providing businesses and citizens access to important information
Its second axis focuses on business empowerment
building on a network of companies that dates back to 2018
and already comprises 120 companies and 110 climate actions
and strengthening their community for increased cooperation and sharing of good practices
Citizen-centred action is delivered by a third pillar, which has been designed in close collaboration with the University of Turku, who provides necessary expertise around behaviour change and ‘climate nudging’
the city is now testing how to promote sustainable mobility options during peopleâs free time
after work while they go to run errands or engage in a hobby
the city of Turku is ensuring that public transport is an easy and attractive option
through good infrastructure and affordable ticket fares
The city will test ways to change peopleâs attitudes to public transport
hoping to instil this as a more favourable option in their minds and make it more likely that they will opt for this
According to various surveys, about 90% of all Finnish people â and 96% of those under ten years old â say they have a hobby
This offers valuable opportunities for mainstreaming climate-neutral and healthy lifestyles with other activities
âWe want to involve these associations and through them we want to engage the citizens because
we also find it challenging to have direct contact with our citizens,â says Huuskonen
The results of this Pilot could give fascinating insights into how cities can limit carbon emissions by impacting peopleâs behaviour through strategic partnerships that facilitate communication with citizens
and which factors citizens are more likely to respond to
The work of these associations will be strengthened by Climate Ambassadors: individuals or organisations with an existing audience and community ties
and who can tangibly demonstrate what a 1.5-degree lifestyle is like
with an emphasis on small changes everyone can make
Huuskonen firmly believes that âliving a sustainable lifestyle is not miserable
and doesnât imply giving up something important
It has the power to increase the well-being
and quality of life for individuals but also of everyone around them.â
the hope is that similar initiatives could be designed for increasingly diverse target groups
which could lead to sizeable impacts on carbon emissions from food

Through this and other climate initiatives
Turku has positioned itself as a facilitator of change towards climate neutrality
playing a central role in understanding their citizens and designing ways to co-create with them and other urban actors
and hopefully become of the first cities to reach climate neutrality
The next frontier is becoming climate positive
meaning the sum of local emissions is increasingly negative
creating an environmental benefit by removing additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
The transformation required for a climate-neutral â never mind a climate-positive â city cannot be achieved without the involvement
and pride in their ability to embrace a sustainable lifestyle is beyond the remit of only the city
The hope is that with the right partners and approach
Cultivating an understanding of who to work with and how to bring people onboard is an essential step in creating longer-term sustainable engagement
in which people feel ownership over the impact they can make and agency in their daily decisions
This article is part of Climate KICâs #LiveableCities Campaign
where we explore the pathways to a climate neutral
our goal is to help transform over 400 cities into thriving
This campaign captures the stories and lessons of ambitious cities in Europe and around the world
We want to show a vision of whatâs possible when cities and stakeholders come together to tackle the climate crisis

Celebrating its almost eight centuries of history and forward-looking vision, Finland’s oldest city, Turku, unveils the design for its upcoming cultural landmark, the Museum of History and the Future
the winning scheme by Sarc+Sigge is one that bridges past
and future with a thoughtful approach to context
A cluster of seven interlocked volumes unfold along the harborfront with staggered projections and recessions

Squāma’s concept centers around flexibility and adaptability to accommodate an evolving program showcasing innovative scientific research
a simple modular approach was selected to ensure the volumes can host a variety of uses
from exhibitions and meeting spaces to dining facilities and educational rooms
While Sarc+Sigge utilized the majority of the 150,000 square foot site
space was also carved out to extend the masses as the Museum of History and the Future develops with time
They overlook a terraced outdoor public space which will host a café-restaurant

and composed of copper panels which subtly catches rays of light
‘Copper as a covering also lasts forever
Its green copper has shifted color but it has remained for this long,’ says Mäki
A single-story form further ensures openness for all and a gable typology to dialogues with its engulfing master plan.‘The aim was to create a museum building that fits in scale and architecture with Turku Castle
making the museum building and its surroundings function as a seamless whole,’ notes Pekka Mäki
‘It also offers easier accessibility for disabled people.’

Construction on the Museum of History and the Future is expected to commence in 2027 and complete in 2029 — aligned with Turku’s celebration of its 800th anniversary
the city also hopes to achieve carbon neutrality
following which it will continue to work towards carbon negativity
‘In line with the city’s green agenda

Finland's second city is well worth a detour
Nordic destinations Stockholm and Copenhagen lure millions of visitors a year
many attracted by the cities' upscale design
elevated food scenes and compelling histories
Finland's first capital and oldest city
founded in 1229 along the banks of the River Aura
hits the same high notes as its neighbours
What's more, this 200,000-person city on Finland's south-west coast is also known as the gateway to the Finnish archipelago: a 40,000-island labyrinth that's considered the largest in the world
Known as Ă
bo to its predominantly Swedish-speaking inhabitants (a name which aptly means "living by the river"), Turku was once part of Sweden in the Middle Ages before becoming an autonomous Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire in 1809
the cosmopolitan hub has served as Finland's second city
and thanks to its thriving food and cafe scene and its Seine-like river vibe
the city is sometimes called "the Paris of Finland"
were discovered following archaeological excavations and are now displayed
The Turku Treasure Map is a printable booklet filled with great recommendations on the city's food
In the summer, outdoor concerts are held almost daily outside the Turku Cathedral
with plenty of vendors selling locally sourced food and wine
its ministers had to decide whether Finland was a Nordic country that received heating subsidies or a wine-producing nation
Finland's government opted to keep its citizens warm; today
Finland must label homegrown grape wine as "mild alcoholic beverage fermented from grapes"
prompting entrepreneurs to explore boozy expressions of lingonberries
which are slowly garnering attention from international sommeliers
If you fancy a more familiar wine, you'll find that, too. I spent an enjoyable hour supine in a deck chair, chatting with the vintners from urban winery Noita who are skirting the rules by hand-picking organic grapes from Burgenland, Austria, and transporting them to their facility in Finland's Fiskars Village
highlighting the region's local food culture
In Kaskis's intimate and unassuming space on the ground floor of an apartment building
chefs and founders Simo Raisio and Erik Mansikka pair pristine perch and pike with celery and ingredients foraged sustainably in nearby forests
served on an eclectic mix of recycled plates and Mansikka's hand-made ceramics
Mansikka is something of a posterchild for the ambitions of Turku's dynamic food scene: as I wandered around town
his red Michelin star clavicle tattoo and impish grin decorated displays of pots and pans at kitchen stores all over
Upbeat chef-fishmonger Johan Hellsten and his team develop catch-of-the-day dishes on the fly between wrapping packets of spotted crab and giant shrimp
offerings included perch soup seasoned liberally with fragrant dill
and reindeer two-ways: a mousse-filled tartlet
and cold-smoked and sliced with horseradish
âą Maakalla: Europe's isolated, autonomous island
âą The secret meaning behind the World Tree Hugging Championships
âą The Swedish law of wanderlust
Finland's second city is considered the best gateway to these far-flung isles
Despite its lofty latitude, Ă
land is often sunnier than the mainland. As spring arrives, the region comes alive as 1.5 million visitors swell its inhabited islands through the summer months, most bound for Ă
land's capital, Mariehamn (Marie's Harbour)
which was established by Russia's Czar Alexander II in 1861 and named for his wife
There's plenty to do (I spent my days wandering the ruins of the Czar's granite fortress and exploring glorious parks and museums) and plenty to eat and drink tucked away within the Torggatan pedestrian precinct's red-and-yellow wooden houses
Finland's Everyman's Right gives Finns and visitors alike the freedom to temporarily stay and camp out overnight anywhere â even in public parks and on private property
so long as you don't cause damage or disturb the landowner
The archipelago is also accessible by year-round ferry service from Turku
Winter attracts those who enjoy cross-country skiing
post-sauna dips in the freezing Baltic or white-knuckling it to drive point-to-point over the frozen ocean when conditions permit
But visiting from spring to early autumn has always been more my speed, when warmer weather signals the opening of The Archipelago Trail: a 250km "ring road" connected by a network of huge
free-to-ride electric yellow ferries that glide noiselessly between islands and invite leisurely exploration
On a recent trip, my favourite sojourn was an afternoon spent at Hotel Hyppeis
a renovated village schoolhouse on HoutskÀr island (roughly three hours by car and ferry from Turku) where co-owners Sam and Outi Fagerlundin host overnight guests in simple rooms decorated with vintage furnishings and rugs woven from upcycled bed linens and towels
the hotel's former classroom hosts a series of multi-course dinners showcasing locally sourced lamb
potatoes grown in a field across the street and other products by a rotating cast of visiting chefs
I was greeted on the deck by a violinist and staff carrying silver platters of crystal glasses of rose spritz
Jerusalem artichoke and blue cheese cream soup with pear compote and a salty salmon dish fragrant with little star anise
They were flavours born from this relatively unexplored corner of Europe
and the perfect way to refuel after a day's exploration

It has been 10 years since the Meyer family's shipbuilding company became the host of the Turku shipyard in Finland. In the anniversary year, the shipbuilder said its direction remains clear: Both the world's most advanced cruise ships and the shipyard's own operations aim for carbon neutrality.
Meyer Turk CEO Tim Meyer said, "We are proud to continue Turku's shipbuilding tradition dating back to 1737. The acquisition we made 10 years ago was mainly based on two grounds: First, Turku has a long shipbuilding tradition and world-class know-how. The people of Meyer Turku and of the entire network form a community, the like of which is impossible to build in a short time. Secondly, thanks to the former, it is possible to build very large ships in Turku.
"In today's situation, where we are building the world's most advanced ships and pioneering in green transition, we are also constantly looking for more experts and employees for various tasks. We are committed to remaining owners of the Turku shipyard and to continuing the joint journey with all our partners towards increasingly sustainable shipbuilding. I am aiming at adding another zero behind the 1 in Meyer Turku's age."
During its ownership, the Meyer family company has invested roughly 300 million euros in the development of the Turku shipyard and daughter companies. Changes have been made to the shipyard's crane fleet, hull production and to the premises of network companies. The daughter company Piikkio Works has also received new production facility for its modular cabin factory in Piikkiö.
Meyer Turku's anniversary has been celebrated among others with a staff party and by opening an updated shipbuilding exhibition at Forum Marinum.

13:31Volunteering to fight in Ukraine is a major
or something one can easily walk away from
Yle spoke with one family who learned this first-hand
the Finnish Foreign Ministry issued a warning to volunteers heading to Ukraine
emphasising the binding nature of the service contracts
One young man from Turku did not see the advisory in time
Turku resident Jyrki Ă
land hugged his son for the last time in early January at the Kupittaa railway station
got the idea to volunteer as a fighter while doing his Finnish military service
did not support his decision to become a volunteer foreign fighter
"We talked about the dangers and urged him to consider doing something else
He felt we were pressuring him and ended up leaving even earlier than planned," Ă
land told Yle
Leo served in Ukraine for just over four months
who chairs the Finns Party's southwest Finland district
received word of his son's death on the day of the local election
Leo's father said he hopes that by sharing his son's story
he can dissuade others thinking of volunteering
Volunteers can reach the front lines with just two bus rides from Helsinki's Kamppi terminal
more than a hundred Finns have fought in Ukraine
according to figures from the Finnish Foreign Ministry
After seeing his son off at the train station
it was three weeks before Jyrki Ă
land heard from Leo again
but coming here has been a real wake-up call
He then learned that his son had signed a service contract committing him to serve with the Ukrainian armed forces for at least six months
they confiscated his passport and restricted his phone use
"It may seem noble to go and fight against the Russians
but I see no sense in young men fighting the battles of old men," Jyrki Ă
land said
the Foreign Ministry's Director General for Consular Services
said the government is aware of volunteers who changed their minds during the training period and wanted to return to Finland
Tanner noted that not all of them have been able to leave
Earlier this year, the Foreign Ministry published guidelines for volunteer fighters
which included information about the nature of the Ukrainian service contract
It explained that the contract is a private legal agreement and may be nearly impossible to terminate
"We have a genuine concern about mechanisms in place for volunteers to leave
we do not accept the idea that signing a piece of paper should make someone a prisoner of their situation."
acknowledged that there was generally little the ministry could do in these situations
Ă
land's son never read the Finnish government's guidance since it was published after he had left Finland
This is backed by messages exchanged between father and son
I know this experience will help me grow as a person
but it's still really tough to be here
Sometimes I just don't know what I'm doing here
Jyrki Ă
land said he contacted the Finnish Foreign Ministry for help in getting his son to safety
He did everything he could to bring Leo home
Leo was transferred to his assigned combat unit
He seemed to grow close with the other fighters
and the tone of his messages began to lighten
media reports indicated that Russia was retaking territory in the Kursk region
"I warned him that it might be time to seriously consider coming home
as the Russians were beginning their spring offensive
He replied that he didn't think his unit would be sent to the front line."
Jyrki Ă
land sent the last message to his son on 9 April
as he was preparing to attend his party's election night gathering
"He died somewhere in eastern Ukraine
in exactly the kind of attack he feared most â a drone strike directed by a human," Ă
land said
The information about Leoâs death came from his fellow fighters
Ukrainian authorities have not officially confirmed his death
Open image viewerJyrki Ă
land said he tried to get his son out of Ukraine
Image: Vesa-Matti Ruuska / YleNo burialAccording to Jyrki Ă
land
nothing in Finland could have prepared his son for what he encountered in Ukraine
Leo was filling out university application forms
A 20-year-old simply isn't thinking about dying
Leoâs decision to go to war permanently changed the lives of his family members
Ă
land is on sick leave from his job as a taxi driver
He said he checks every day to see whether his son's remaining belongings have been delivered to the embassy
Those serving with Leo said there was nothing left of his body
"That means that if the body cannot be identified
Not for at least a year," Ă
land explained
After completing his military service last December
Leo had hoped to share his experiences of modern warfare with the Finnish Defence Forces
Jyrki Ă
land said he now intends to honour that wish as best he can
Finland should be using a lot more drones and change its tactics
and they have thermal cameras and everything
Finnish President Alexander Stubb expressed concern over Russia's tactics in its war of aggression against Ukraine
Stubb noted that Russia has neither accepted nor complied with the US-proposed and European-supported ceasefire
raising fears about the prolongation of the conflict
"Russia is once again playing for time," Stubb said
stressing the need to increase pressure on the Kremlin
"A ceasefire is how to stop the killing."

When Turku first launched its work on electric vehicle charging
the cityâs 13 free public car charging stations generated a lot of excitement but very little use
the city itself had already had two electric vans for postal delivery running for four years
but it would be some time before public interest picked up
Searching for a company to provide an electric bike sharing system back in 2018, the city found that there were still no suitable suppliers on the market. However, fast forward to today, and the city operates a fleet of electric buses and has even electrified its iconic city ferry, Föri. The residents of Turku are catching up too
with estimates that 25,000 private electric cars may be operating in the city by the end of the decade
âWe needed some concrete planning because the market had already changed a lot by 2020,â says Jussi Saari
from Turkuâs Traffic and Mobility Department
âWe needed a clear plan for the hundreds of chargers we wanted to install.â The eight operating chargers in the public space at the time
were built by the municipal company Turku Energia
Turku is opting for a market-driven approach
Turku aims to become climate neutral in time for its 800th birthday in 2029
A large part of this effort will involve reshaping its transport sector
it needed to put an ambitious electromobility master plan in place
primarily centred around car charging facilities
To ease this process, the city joined the EU-funded project UserChi
to gain insights from other cities on the same journey
âWe knew about a good example of an electromobility masterplan from Stockholm and wanted to create our own version
real plans that can be implemented here in the future years,â Saari recalls
Saari emphasises the value of international collaboration and learning
we got a lot out of the UserChi project and it was important for our internal development
Itâs good to have partners that have already had experiences to learn from,â he says
Saari is optimistic that it may be approved and implemented already by the end of 2024
Rather than focusing solely on the number of chargers
Turkuâs plan prioritises the overall power availability
âWe donât need to decide that we need 2,000 chargers because if we have one high speed charger
it can charge the same amount as ten slow chargers during the day,â Saari explains
The city aims to make available 3kw per electric car and 0.66kw per plug-in hybrid â about 44 megawatts of charging power overall
The strategic deployment of chargers considers different user needs
with ultra-fast chargers planned for high-traffic areas and moderately fast chargers near amenities like restaurants and shops
âWe also wanted to ensure that we have slower chargers
for offices and residential areas outside homes,â Saari adds
In considering the location of the chargers, Turku made use of UserChiâs âCLICKâ tool
Click is a digital platform designed to enhance the planning and deployment of electric vehicle charging stations in cities and major transport corridors
It allows for customisable planning according to user needs and local specifics
integrating a variety of data inputs like road networks
The platform supports dynamic scenario simulations and adjustments based on actual usage data
facilitating both the initial setup and ongoing expansion of charging networks
These decisions were not made by municipal experts alone
The types and locations of chargers were decisions made as a result of a consultation of around 500 Turku residents â one that yielded some results that surprised operators and experts
the governing wisdom was that chargers should always be placed next to services like restaurants and shopping centres
It was thanks to this citizen consultation exercise
which also allowed people to choose their preferred location for chargers on a map
that it became clear that different types of chargers were best suited to different locations
While they wanted different charging options
something users made it clear that they were sick of was being forced to download a lot of different mobile apps
âWhat was the most often cited problem was that there were quite a lot of operators
they all had their own application,â Saari relates
âThey all had different problems with their application that demanded
quite a big deposit of money to even start charging
It was quite a messy situation â some chargers worked fine
Turku is tackling that problem by ensuring that every charger installed on public land will have an option to pay directly with your credit card â no apps necessary
New European regulations will soon make this mandatory for fast chargers
is that it reduces market friction and encourages real competition: âYou donât have to stick with one operator
you can choose the closest and the cheapest.â
The survey also validated the cityâs impulse to make more public charging available
revealing that large numbers of people were interested in owning electric cars but lacked any way of charging such vehicles at their homes
there are already a growing number of publicly available charging stations on private property
for example in the carparks of department stores
âWe are glad that private companies are making public charging points
âThe biggest supermarket chains in Finland are also the biggest charging point operators,â he reveals
Turku is not looking to see a simple switch from private fossil-fuel powered cars to private electric cars
which is not a compelling solution to the worldâs ecological challenges
like electric public transport and good-old-fashioned walking are part of the plan too
but here the needs are quite different â more related to security than charging
âThe need for electric bike charging is quite low
even though we have more and more electric bikes each year,â Saari observes
This trend is partly due to government-subsidised
tax-free bike programmes through companies
âbecause they have such a long range and people are biking 10 to 20 km per day
so there is not that much need for public charging.â
Nonetheless, Turku was interested in trialling one of the bike-charging technologies being trialled through the UserChi project, the InSoc e-bike and e-scooter charging station with a solar panel canopy that uses solar power for bike charging
the planned design was not suitable for the harsh winters accompanied by heavy snowfall that are characteristic of Finland
This led to a localised redesign: âWe planned the bike garage ourselves with four walls and gave it to the company
equipped with solar panels and battery storage
offers parking for 40 bikes and is conveniently located near the train station
promoting multimodal transport connectivity
The garage remains accessible at all times and is equipped with security cameras to ensure safety while remaining open for public use: âItâs as secure as it can be while remaining open.â
The encouraging trend towards electric mobility among Turkuâs residents has not come about all on its own
Besides technological advances and global trends
the shift owes a lot to the cityâs consistent communication campaigns
Public engagement extended to events and media
Turku promotes its fleet of over 80 electric buses
highlighting the environmental benefits of choosing public transport
The city also observes International Car Free Day
producing a series in Finnish focused on electric mobility
hosted by urban mobility specialist Jalmari SalaterÀ
features interviews with experts and experienced individuals
offering a comprehensive perspective on electric mobility
This initiative aimed to educate and inspire listeners about the benefits and possibilities of electric transportation
Turkuâs journey of enhancing its electric mobility through UserChi over the past four years is mirrored in the journey of Jussi Saari himself
Now Iâve been working four years in these electric charging initiatives,â he says
Living quite far from central Turku where he works
he wasnât initially convinced that an electric car would be a suitable option
and he was concerned about how well one might function when subjected to Finlandâs -25 degree winters
âI have seen that an electric car works even for longer trips
and I have gained enough trust to buy one for myself.”

Italy’s Marcell Jacobs stormed ahead on his path to Paris
running his fastest ever 100m outside of the Olympic Games at the Paavo Nurmi Games – a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting – in Turku on Tuesday (18)
The Olympic champion was one of multiple global gold medallists who made their mark in Finland's oldest city
as 2016 Olympic champion Omar McLeod continued his comeback with a 110m hurdles win and 2019 world champion Nia Ali dipped for victory in the 100m hurdles
Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra launched himself to top spot in the javelin
while Nina Kennedy soared to pole vault victory and her fellow world champion Camryn Rogers won against a strong hammer field
it was Jacobs who made the strongest statement as he dipped under 10 seconds in both his heat and final
As he continues his preparations for an Olympic 100m title defence in Paris in August
Jacobs achieved the third fastest time of his career – the 29-year-old having only ever gone quicker en route to his Olympic gold in Tokyo
Jacobs – who won his heat in Turku in 9.99 – led an Italian one-two
as he was chased home by Chituru Ali in 9.96 for the first sub-10 second run of his career
Canada’s Olympic 200m champion Andre De Grasse was third in 10.00
"Before today I was a bit worried that I hadn't run under 10 seconds yet (this season)
but it’s part of the game and now I have done it twice," said Jacobs
so now we need to put the pieces together."
McLeod and Ali also achieved wins in both rounds of the sprint hurdles
Jamaica’s McLeod said he felt what it was like to run fast again as he won his 110m hurdles heat in 13.29 and final in 13.25 (1.4m/s) to finish clear ahead of Belgium’s Elie Bacari in a 13.38 PB
The women’s 100m hurdles final was much closer
USA’s Ali returned to pip Nadine Visser in the final – 12.48 (1.6m/s) to an equal PB of 12.51 for Visser
There was disappointment for Jasmine Camacho-Quinn in the heats
as the Olympic champion pulled up and then hobbled off the track
the men’s javelin demanded lots of attention
and this time India’s Chopra got the win
Second to Finland’s Oliver Helander in 2022
Chopra turned the tables and triumphed with a best of 85.97m from the third round
Helander was third with 83.96m as his compatriot Toni Keranen threw a PB of 84.19m to split them
Kennedy needed just five attempts to get to her eventual winning mark of 4.80m in the pole vault
Opening with a first-time clearance of 4.41m
the Australian passed to 4.61m and also managed that on her first try
She needed two goes at 4.73m but then cleared 4.80m at the first time of asking before three unsuccessful attempts at a world lead of 4.87m
Lene Retzius and Alysha Newman both cleared 4.61m for second and third
Rogers surpassed 73 metres twice in the hammer
recording her best of 73.36m in the first round
Finland’s 2021 world U20 champion Silja Kosonen was second with 71.67m while it took Katrine Koch Jacobsen’s second-best throw to decide third from fourth
Jacobsen’s best matched the top mark achieved by Olympic champion and world record-holder Anita Wlodarczyk
Jamaica’s Shanieka Ricketts was another athlete who had the win wrapped up after just one attempt
The two-time world triple jump silver medallist jumped 14.17m (1.1m/s) in round one before 14.14m in round two and won by nine centimetres ahead of Dariya Derkach
Ella Junnila delighted the home fans early on with her win in the high jump
she added a centimetre to her national record
achieved the Olympic qualifying mark and finished ahead of 2022 world champion Eleanor Patterson
There was further Olympic qualification and national record success in the men’s 800m
Sweden’s Andreas Kramer led the 800m from gun to tape and eventually punched his way to victory
narrowly holding off Ireland’s Mark English to win in 1:44.65
taking 0.02 off his national record and beating the qualification mark for Paris by 0.01
Ireland also celebrated a win in the men’s 1500m
won by Cathal Doyle in a PB of 3:34.09 ahead of his compatriot Luke McCann in 3:34.32
including a national record of 3:35.20 by Finland’s Joonas Rinne in front of home fans
That improved the record of 3:36.33 that had stood to Pekka Vasala since 1972
Gabriela Gajanova – fresh from her European silver medal win in Rome – surged around race leader Eveliina Maattanen
Maattanen was unable to respond and Gajanova got the win in 1:59.57
Ethiopia’s Abraham Seme dominated the men’s 3000m steeplechase
winning by more than four seconds in 8:17.22
while the 400m hurdles races were won by Rasmus Magi in 48.42 and Kemi Adekoya in 54.37

/ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Gustav Iden recorded his first victory of the season today in a thrilling race at Challenge Turku
no one was strong enough to keep an unleashed Milan Agnew from her first professional win
it was Henry RĂ€ppo (EST) who led out of the water in the menâs race six seconds ahead of Frederick Webb (GBR) and Rinel Plus (EST)
Iden and JoÀo Ferreira (POR) came out of the water just under a minute and a half behind with time to make up to have a chance at victory
Those who might have thought that these men would ride straight to the front were deceived
RĂ€ppo rode so strongly that he managed to increase his lead over everyone except Iden
the Norwegian did not manage to close the gap to the front: he closed to just over a minute behind and only in the final kilometres of the bike did he win some more seconds back
so the half marathon promised to be not only decisive
RĂ€ppo started the run strongly and saw his lead increase to almost two minutes in the first 10km
For a while it looked like victory was his
but Iden had other plans and with 6km to go had closed the gap one and a half minutes
Those 6km proved to be the deciding factor and just before the finish
Iden passed RĂ€ppo and took the win in 3:36:01
RĂ€ppo finished second in 3:36:12 and Ferreira third in 3:39:18
the eventual winner also started the bike with a deficit
who grabbed three-quarters of a minute ahead of Iida Reini (FIN) and Maaike Vooren (NED)
and a significant 3:46 minutes ahead of Agnew in fourth
From that moment on it was Agnew who opened the throttle on the bike and pushed the pace considerably
Slowly but surely she moved up into the field
eventually joining Perez Sala and also Reini
This put the trio in the lead and that would not change until T2
When Agnew started the half marathon at a high pace
Perez Sala was unable to follow and her deficit grew rapidly
Reini tried to stay with Agnew for a while
but she too had to acknowledge that Agnew was by far the strongest today
the Australian’s lead only increased
running comfortably to a victory Challenge Turku victory in 4:03:16
Reini finished second in 4:06:07 and Perez Sala finished third in 4:07:18

Open image viewerMounted police in Helsinki on Thursday. Image: Mikko Ahmajarvi / YleYle News1.5. 11:49May Day Eve celebrations passed off mostly peacefully around Finland, police said on Thursday morning.
In Helsinki, police said that they cleared the seaside Kaivopuisto Park of revellers before midnight Wednesday "out of concern for public order and safety". The operation began around 9.30pm and took about two hours.
Crowds of young people, many of them intoxicated, had gathered in the park as usual on May Day Eve. The police received reports of assaults, and of fireworks being shot off in the crowd.
In the southwestern city of Turku, chilly, wet weather dampened festivities, police said. Crowds gathered to party and hear choral singing in Vartiovuori Park, the highest point in central Turku.
In Oulu, police were called to the scene of a brawl in Kiiminki around 4am, and found one person seriously injured. They are investigated the case as attempted murder, assault and unlawful threats. Several people were detained.
On Thursday, Labour Day, observations continue according to tradition with picnics, speeches and May Day parades. Among the politicians scheduled to deliver addresses on 1 May were the chairs of the main opposition parties. Antti Lindtman (SDP) and Antti Kaikkonen (Cen) are to speak in Helsinki, Sofia Virta (Greens) in Turku and Minja Koskela (Left Alliance) in Tampere.
Also speaking in Tampere was Minister of Employment Arto Satonen (NCP), who leaves office next week. Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman (Finns) held a speech in Helsinki.
At the Presidential Palace in Helsinki, President Alexander Stubb and his spouse, Suzanne Innes-Stubb, were greeted beginning at 9.30am with musical May Day greetings in the courtyard of the Presidential Palace. The performers included the Ikaalinen Youth Orchestra and the HÀmeenkyrö Brass Band on behalf of the Workers' Musical Organisation, as well as three choirs.
Around 10am, Helsinki police said that May Day celebrations had started peacefully in the city. They warned of brief traffic disruptions due to the main blue-collar labour federation SAKâs May Day march from Hakaniemi to Citizensâ Square (Kansalaistori) across from the Parliament building.
Meyer Turku celebrates decade of family ownership with four largest LNG-fuelled cruise ships ever
Meyer Turku, the shipyard located on the south-western tip of Finland, has a bumper orderbook.
The jewel in the crown is a potential six-vessel series for what are the worldâs largest cruise ships.
The sextet joins a pair of Finnish patrol vessels in the backlog, as the shipyard remains unaffected by the challenges facing its German counterpart, Meyer Werft.
