Image: Mika kylmäniemi / LehtikuvaYle News4.10.2024 12:13•Updated 4.10.2024 12:14Pirkanmaa district court sentenced a 19-year-old man to life in prison on Thursday for the rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl in the town of Valkeakoski earlier this year
The rape and killing of the teenager on a Saturday night in May caused widespread shock across the country
named in court as Tuomas Sakari Matias Salminen
but admitted to the charges of child rape and aggravated manslaughter
Salminen and the victim were not known to each other
The prosecutor in the case had demanded that the court sentence Salminen to at least 13 years in prison on the charges of child rape and murder
but the court handed down the maximum criminal penalty of life imprisonment
a life sentence in Finland rarely leads to a convict spending the remainder of their lives behind bars
but instead usually consists of serving time in a closed prison as well as a 'halfway house'
The court heard that the victim had spent the evening with friends before making her way home through a forested area
Salminen had left the market square in the centre of the town and at some point began following the girl through the woods
where he raped her before strangling her to death
the court ruled that the act met the requisite criteria to be considered murder
the prosecutor noted that Salmen had searched online for material related to violence and sexual crimes before he committed the rape and murder
Speaking to the media following the court's ruling
Salminen's lawyer Eemeli Saros said that he plans to appeal the verdict
Prosecutor Leena Koivuniemi told the court that the victim had been due to come home at 2am on the night of the murder
her parents and friends went looking for her
and her body was found by one of her friends at about 7am on Sunday morning
Koivuniemi noted that Salminen was carrying a knife at the time of the attack
Yle reported in the aftermath of the murder that in 2022, the suspect was handed a suspended prison sentence of one year and six months. The charges included robbery, four counts of minor fraud, damage to property and aggravated damage to property. All of the crimes were committed as a young person, meaning Salminen was under the age of 18.

Police detained the 18-year-old man on suspicion of manslaughter and aggravated child rape after the teenage girl was found dead in woodland in the town on Saturday.
The suspect has been interviewed by police, but officers were unwilling to give any further details at this time while the preliminary investigation is ongoing.
Police will seek to have the suspect remanded into custody at a hearing at Pirkanmaa District Court on Wednesday.
"The police have a good idea of what has happened. We have a lot of people working on this high-priority case," Detective Inspector Jari Kinnunen told Yle on Monday morning.

Image: Tommi Pylkkö / Yle, MapCreator, OpenStreetMap Suspect was on probationAccording to records obtained by Yle from Pirkanmaa District Court, the suspect in the Valkeakoski killing was handed a 1 year and 6 months suspended prison sentence in 2022.
The charges included robbery, four counts of minor fraud, damage to property and aggravated damage to property. All of the crimes were committed by the defendant as a young person, meaning under the age of 18.
The court records also show that he was ordered to pay substantial damages and other compensation totalling more than 35,000 euros in relation to these charges.
His sentence was reduced slightly by the Court of Appeal, to a suspended prison sentence of 1 year and 2 months.
The probation period is valid until 31 October this year, the court records revealed.
Concerns about the girl were raised on Friday evening after she failed to come home from spending time with her friends.
A call was made to emergency services after the same friends found the girl's body in a wooded area. Police made clear the friends are not suspected of having committed any crime, but investigating officers did immediately believe the girl had been killed.
Police noted at the weekend that rumours have spread on social media that people of foreign origin or immigrants were involved in the girl's death. The police stressed that the suspect has no foreign background.
"We remind you to behave appropriately on social media. Refrain from sharing false information and respect the grief of the victim's family," the police said in a press release.
Anne Laukkanen, Administrative Director of the City of Valkeakoski, told reporters on Monday afternoon that children of foreign backgrounds have faced racism at school because of the false claims about the case.
"Now is not the time for these things. Let us now focus on this grief work and crisis work. Under no circumstances should this situation be turned into a racist exercise," Laukkanen said.

On Saturday, a 15-year-old girl was found dead in woodland in Valkeakoski, in the region of Pirkanmaa.
The man, who was born in 2005, has been detained on suspicion of those crimes and on the basis of information uncovered by the police during their preliminary investigation.
According to the police, the homicide has been linked to people of foreign origin or immigrants on social media. The police stressed that the suspect has no foreign background.
"This is a very serious violent crime against a minor, which is why the police will not specify the manner or place of the crime in order to protect the victim's privacy," said Detective Superintendent Jari Kinnunen, from the Central Finland Police, in a police press release.
Kinnunen told Yle in an interview on Sunday afternoon that the police were srtill in the process of interviewing the suspect, and Kinnunen said he does not yet know whether the suspect has confessed to the killing.
"Tomorrow [on Monday], the director of the investigation will hold a meeting with the prosecutor and they will determine whether the charge should be changed to a lesser or more serious one," Kinnunen told Yle.
The investigation will then continue with further questioning and technical examination.
The girl, who had been out for the evening, had not returned home on Friday night. This was reported to the police.
The girl's friends who had spent the evening with her found her dead in a nearby forest in Valkeakoski. The friends called emergency services. None of the friends are currently suspected of a crime.

He was remanded on suspicion of manslaughter and aggravated rape of a child after the 15-year-old girl was found dead in woodland near her home in the early hours of Saturday morning

Police stated that the suspect has not taken a position on the charges against him

The platform has been in the headlines — again — in recent days after reports emerged that the suspect in the killing of a 15-year-old girl in Valkeakoski last weekend had used it to post fantasies about strangling women
HS writes that the site is based on anonymity
and by its own estimates had about 2.5 million "active users" last month
This anonymity allows "hate speech to run rampant" on the platform, University of Helsinki PhD researcher Emilia Lounela tells the paper. This view is also backed up by a Ministry of Justice report published in 2021
which found that Ylilauta was the source of about 96 percent of hate speech on Finnish websites
"The typical idea there is that you shouldn't be too sensitive
you should be able to make fun of everything and laugh at everything," Lounela explains
noting that misogyny is common on the platform
extreme right-wing and anti-minority hate speech
She further adds that misogynistic and racist attitudes are evident even in the mainstream in Finland
but on forums like Ylilauta the rhetoric becomes ever more extreme — and more moderation and regulation of these sites is needed
"It is important to add to the research data and create tools so that work can be done with children and young people to dismantle harmful attitudes," Lounela says

Purra quoted a line from the article about how the use of the signs "encapsulates something essential about our time"
This was clearly something that struck a chord with Finland's finance minister and deputy PM
Although it wasn't immediately clear what she meant
IL writes that many X users responded to her post by noting the underlying tone of racism
noticing her comment had caused a little confusion and a lot of criticism
writing in another X post that the toilet signage was not what bothered her the most

One of Ilta-Sanomat's most-read stories on Thursday morning tellsOpens an external website of two stranded swans
The tabloid explains that a number of people contacted animal welfare services in Turku to report that two swans had been sitting in a field for days
the callers were concerned the birds were suffering
went to investigate and initially observed from a distance that the swans were sitting in the field
they found that the swans were plastic and sent an "all clear" report — with an accompanying selfie — back to HQ
Although call-outs by animal welfare authorities are rare
plastic swans can be seen around Finland during the spring and summer months
"Swans are big and territorial and a bit aggressive
so sometimes these plastic swans can be enough for geese and ducks to continue their journey and not stop in a field," Sari Pesonen of Turku's animal welfare agency tells IS
