the success stories of the Finnish mechanical engineering industry have received little public attention Its business was launched in the 1950s at a Ministry of Defence factory in Santahamina which started manufacturing hydraulic tractor diggers Production was soon transferred to the Vammaskoski factory in Vammala Mechanical engineering operations got up to full speed there the yellow tractor diggers made by Vammas gained a solid foothold in the domestic market They dug countless building foundations and thousands of kilometres of ditches Vammas Oy was merged into Patria when the State’s defence materiel industry carried out major restructuring in 1997 One of its businesses focused on civilian products and the other on weapons systems Martti Wallin took the helm of Vammas’s civilian business in 2003 the engineering workshop was focusing on road graders has many warm memories of Vammas – above all he remembers the international nature of its business “It was an extremely international business Eighty to 90 per cent of sales were generated abroad.” Its Swedish and German subsidiaries added to the international scope of its operations Patria Vammas Oy had a relatively small team working on civilian products – but its key asset in strong competition was its heavy-duty technological and commercial expertise the team had employees proficient in foreign languages other than English German clients required the spare parts manager to be fluent in German That position was held by Tapio Sainio – no problem The company sold road graders to Spain and snow removal equipment to Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union “Contacts could come from anywhere in the world The most exotic location might be the Kabul airport in Afghanistan North American airports were also an important market for snow removal equipment O’Hare in Chicago – at that time the busiest airport in the world – cleared its runways with a Vammas PSB 5500 snow removal machine brushes and blows clean a 5.5 metre strip of runway in one pass “It was nice to see that although the company was small we and our products were greatly respected we could offer the best technology on the market.” the manufacture of civilian products was not a core business for Patria – and so Wallin was given the task of finding new owners for these businesses but this was a strategic decision to divest non-core business The road grader business was acquired by Veekmas Oy which still has a major foothold in the international market for road graders The cargo handling business was sold to a German family-owned company The snow removal business in turn went to a US company.  You can still see Vammas snow removal equipment at North American and European airports Vammas produced defence equipment and developed weapons systems in Vammala It made not only ammunition and mortar shells but also products such as the barrels of cannons and mortar systems The workshop also repaired and modernised heavy equipment such as tanks and cannons Patria no longer produces defence equipment in Sastamala Weapons systems production has been merged into Land and the expertise gained in Vammala is now utilised at the Hämeenlinna and Tampere locations Patria sold the munition production plant in 2014 to Nammo Lapua Oy which is carrying on the production of steel mortar shells in Sastamala “Patria still owns industrial properties in Sastamala that are leased by other companies,” says Wallin [email protected] HELSINKI FINLAND JUser: :_load: Unable to load user with ID: 58 has admitted to YLE that the state-owned defence manufacturer made mistakes in giving a businessman a permission to market its products in Uganda The Finnish businessman’s ties to the defence manufacturer were exposed after he was found dead in a hotel room in Kampala The man had been given a permission to market the products of Patria in Uganda and Mozambique by a sales manager at Patria Isotalo said the sales manager did not have the authority to give the permission “It was an error of judgement, because the permission would’ve required an approval from the superior of the sales manager, and assessments in accordance with the processes of Patria,” he said in an interview with YLE on Tuesday Patria had conduct a background check on the businessman finding no obstacles to starting the co-operation but failed to conduct the requisite country assessments in Uganda and Mozambique according to the public broadcasting company for human rights violations by Transparency International Patria is not looking for business there,” told Isotalo The middle-aged businessman was neither under contract at Patria nor in Africa at the request of Patria, a company spokesperson stated when commenting on the case to Helsingin Sanomat He had simply been given a permission to distribute brochures for the products of the defence manufacturer The case has garnered media attention also in If it goes ahead, the industrial action will begin on Tuesday, 11 March and continue until Sunday, March 16. Those affected by the strike warning include Fazer bakeries in Lahti, Lappeenranta and Vantaa, as well as 139 of the company's in-store bakeries. The strike would also affect Vaasan bakeries in Kiiminki, Kuusankoski, Vammala and Vantaa. It also includes three bakeries operated by Lantmännen Unibake, according to SEL. SEL's strike warning applies to bakery employees covered by a collective agreement between the union and the Finnish Food and Drink Industries’ Federation (ETL). However, essential workers carrying out emergency-related tasks, for example, are excluded from the strike. SEL and ETL have not been able to reach consensus on a new collective agreement for food industry workers. The two parties are negotiating a total of five collective agreements for employees in the bakery, meat, dairy, industrial food sectors, as well as brewery and soft drinks sector workers. Altogether, around 25,000 workers are affected by the negotiations. According to the workers' union, the goal of the strike warning is to accelerate the negotiation process. "Our differences in views have been so great that we've had to resort to issuing a strike warning as a means of pressure to achieve reasonable collective agreements," the union's chair, Veli-Matti Kuntonen, said in a statement. following the derailment of 17 freight cars at Vammala Open image viewerRaumalle menossa olleen tavarajunan suistuneissa vaunuissa on lastina mäntypuuöljyä ja lehtipuuöljyä Image: Kalle Parkkinen / Lehtikuva6.4.2013 14:35•Updated 6.4.2013 17:58It is still unknown why the freight cars derailed in the early hours of Saturday one track had been cleared to allow for diesel-engine traffic on the route replaced scheduled services with bus transport It said that passengers would continue to be carried by bus throughout the day H 471 (at 18.14 Tampere-Pori) and H 472 (at 18.15 Pori-Tampere).
