Abbeville and Calhoun Falls have a water purchase agreement that began in October of 1996 and ends in 2036
The lawsuit claims the town hasn’t made a payment since September and owes the city roughly $404,000
The lawsuit alleges Calhoun Falls has breached the contract by not only refusing to pay for water that it has received and is still currently receiving from Abbeville
but also its refusal to impose rates and charges on its water customers in order to provide sufficient funds to pay for the water it receives
Multiple Calhoun Falls residents have reached out to FOX Carolina claiming to have low water pressure or no water all since the start of 2025
Some stated they are still being charged for water that they are not getting

thus making them unavailable for their intended and pledged purpose.”
The City of Abbeville filed a motion for Calhoun Falls to pay the full amount including interest owed under the water contract after the date of the requested injunction and that payments be made on a current basis

KATC - In a historic celebration marking 175 years of the town’s vibrant past
Abbeville officials unearthed a time capsule Thursday morning
The 1994 time capsule was located underneath the gazebo in Magdalen Square
Mayor Roslyn White of Abbeville noted that the capsule
was a symbolic connection to the town’s rich history
referring to one of the many items retrieved
stirred up feelings of nostalgia among many residents
the items were a glimpse into a time that felt distant
Among the items pulled from the capsule was a piece of artwork by local artist Mae Mayeux
who had been told the capsule would not be opened for 50 years
expressed her excitement upon learning that the town had decided to commemorate the occasion by unveiling the time capsule
"I was told originally that it would not be open for 50 years and I didn't expect to be here
So when I saw on Facebook that they were having this celebration
I thought well I need to be here just in case because I’ll be alive watching them pull the print out," Mayeux said
These materials provided a snapshot of Abbeville’s history
offering a tangible connection to the past
"I had butterflies in my stomach thinking maybe it’s not in there
but when she pulled it out – it was the first thing she pulled out and it was so exciting," Mayeux continued
the event was a reminder of the strong community bonds that have defined Abbeville for generations
reflecting on the enduring sense of pride in the town
The unearthing of the time capsule served as a reminder not just of Abbeville’s past
but of the enduring connection between its residents and their shared history
these relics from the past will serve as a lasting testament to the community's resilience and unity

AL (WDHN) – A historic church in downtown Abbeville was destroyed in an early morning blaze
It’s a sad thing when you see a building that you’ve loved
People’s lives have been changed here; weddings have been celebrated
people are rightfully hurting,” said Rickey Sowell
Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church in Abbeville
Abbeville Police say a patrol officer saw smoke from First Baptist Church on 100 Columbia Road and called in the fire late Tuesday night
Abbeville Mayor Jimmy Money tells WDHN the fire is believed to have started shortly before 11:00 p.m
destroying the sanctuary and Sunday school rooms
“It makes you want to cry when you drive by it,” Mayor Money said
Several fire departments responded to the scene
Firefighters worked for hours through the freezing morning
and while the flames were eventually contained
officials say the job may take much longer to complete
there’s a lot of fat lumber in there; that’s why it’s going to be burning for several days,” explained Abbeville Fire Chief Ryan Figgins
“Those timbers are 14 to 16 inches thick.”
No one was in the building at the time of the fire
The pastor of First Baptist Church tells WDHN that the Family Life Center will be open and used for church services and events
The Lord has accomplished amazing things in this building
The memories and history of this building are something we all cherish,” First Baptist Church representatives wrote in a Facebook post
The cause of the fire has not been released
and an investigation is underway between the Abbeville Fire Department
Chief Figgins said the cause of the fire cannot be determined until all the flames are out
ABBEVILLE, La. — It was a stormy start to the week in Acadiana
residents found themselves vacuuming out their cars after the heavy rainfall
a resident of Abbeville who has lived in the city for less than a year but has already witnessed the impact of heavy rains
"We need some drainage because everything is really slow
They need to really work super hard on that
To better understand the city's drainage system
KATC reached out to Abbeville Mayor Roslyn White
The Vermilion River is the main artery that drains a large part of the regional watershed which means all drainage in Abbeville is dependent on the water level in the river
When areas north of us have high rain events
all that water comes through Abbeville which impacts nearly all of the city
The high volume of rain received today in such a short period of time
especially with a high river level will cause water to cover roads and fill ditches until the rain stops and the river begins to recede
We continuously work to address all drainage issues and do so in a timely manor as they are reported
Residents can also call us to report issues or check the status of a request at 337-893-8550
The area mentioned below has a very low elevation
which causes additional water issues and unfortunately
the severe rainfall and flooding around her home meant her children stayed home from school and having to cancel her doctor's appointment
it takes maybe a week at the most for it to go all the way down
So it's hard to step off my porch and go places because of this," she said

We recently argued a Motion for Partial Summary Judgment on the issue of whether or not the current pay schedule for Senior Abbeville Police Officers violates state law
After argument between counsel for the Officers and the City of Abbeville
the Court found in favor of the Officers ruling that the current pay schedule violates La
We are pleased with this recent ruling; however
the City of Abbeville still has the right to appeal the Court’s ruling
We believe that should this matter proceed to an appeal
We look forward to moving the case forward and obtaining a just resolution on behalf of the Abbeville Police Officers
The case
involved eleven senior officers who sued the city
claiming that its pay scale violated state law
The officers argued that the city’s pay structure
which set the starting salary for officers at $40,000 annually
failed to account for adjustments to the pay of senior officers
the court ruled that the city had indeed violated the pay schedule
"They just want to be paid according to their pay scales," Landry said back in January 2024
"They always thought that if the starting salary was going to change
The lawsuit alleges that while the city adjusted the starting salary for new officers
it failed to make corresponding adjustments for the pay of senior officers
despite their entitlement to higher wages based on the new scale
there were no additional filings as of yet
but Landry expressed satisfaction with the ruling
which he said was a significant win for his clients
KATC contacted the City of Abbeville for a statement
but officials declined to comment on the pending litigation
The city has 30 days to decide whether to appeal the ruling

_________________________________________________KATC's Penelope Lopez and I sat down with them and asked for their responses to the following questions:
Why do you want to become the next Councilwoman/councilman for District B
What are your qualifications for this role?
the transition from his apartment at James A
Herod Apartments to a motel has been anything but easy
"I feel like my voice isn’t being heard at all," Plowden said
standing in the motel room that’s now his home
who has lived at the motel since mid-February
packed only a suitcase and a few clothes when he and other tenants were given a three-day notice to vacate due to life-threatening violations
this is the room they gave us," he said as he walked to his temporary home
a far cry from the apartment he had called home
Tenants were told to leave the premises with just one bag after being informed of critical safety violations
including non-functioning smoke detectors and an outdated sprinkler system
The violations prompted an emergency evacuation for residents of the Abbeville property
An investigation into the property’s history revealed years of safety violations
State Fire Marshal records show the last required sprinkler system inspection was conducted 12 years ago
some tenant spaces lacked functioning smoke detectors
These long-standing hazards raised serious concerns about tenant safety
You can see the inspection reports for yourself by scrolling down
the board president of the nonprofit organization that owns the apartments
Dawson acknowledged that these issues predated his involvement with the property but conceded that the organization should have acted sooner
but we do bear some responsibility," Dawson said
"We should have called someone in to do the inspection immediately
Documents obtained by KATC showed that James A
Herod Apartments received state housing trust funds totaling $350,000 in August 2023
When asked about the allocation of those funds
"The money that we are dealing with now are the ones that we received—yeah—the money is still there,” he said
Plowden and other tenants are still waiting for resolution
as initial promises of repairs within two weeks have yet to be fulfilled
"It makes me worry if I’m going to be on the streets or if I’m going to get back in my apartment," Plowden said
In response to questions regarding tenant rights
explained that tenants like Plowden have legal recourse
"They do have the right to break the lease agreement if the property is no longer habitable at all," Robinson said
"I just caution people when you’re breaking the lease
you want to make sure you have a lot of evidence
Plowden’s biggest hope is simply to return home
"I hope they can find a solution to this problem because it’s really bothering me and it’s frustrating," he said
UPDATE: The Abbeville City Council member who represents the area where these apartments are located has sent us a statement about the situation:
it is my opinion that the tenants have been displaced through no fault of their own
they should not be held liable for rent or threatened with eviction for refusing to pay," said Council Member Terry Brousard
and shows a total disregard for the tenants' well-being
The property owner must take full responsibility for what has happened
I want to extend my gratitude to Mayor Roslyn White
and private citizens who stepped up and answered the call
Your willingness to help in a time of need speaks volumes about the strength of our community."

An Abbeville man was arrested on Thursday after allegedly shooting at his wife and mother-in-law
The Abbeville Police Department and Vermilion Parish Sheriff's office
in a joint operation located and arrested Quintal Davis
on two counts attempted first-degree murder
Davis was wanted for the Wednesday morning shooting of his wife on Nugier Street in Abbeville
Davis received multiple gunshot wounds to her leg and buttocks
Davis is also charged with shooting at his mother in law after the shooting of his wife
Davis was transported to Abbeville General Hospital by Acadian Ambulance and later airlifted to a Lafayette Hospital
Davis was transported to Abbeville Police Department where he was booked
then transported to Vermilion Parish Correction Center
even he was impressed with what he saw from the Panthers in the Class A state championship game on Thursday
“They were unstoppable at times,” Nickles said
“They really executed the A bone as well as you could.”
“We just did everything we knew we had to do,” Leach said
“The coaches drew up the game plan and I trusted it
I just go do it and it worked out pretty good
"It’s just matter of doing whatever the coaches want us to do
I just go in and do what they ask me to do.”
That gave Leach 199 yards of total offense
Nickles said it would take awhile to discuss what Leach has meant to AHS
we don’t have that much time,” Nickles said
“He’s meant so much to our program
and I wish nothing but the best for him.”
“I feel like defensively we were just on our heels most of that second quarter,” said Wright
“We did try to tighten it up right before the half and make it interesting
but they came out and punched it in and that’s what they do
They’ve been doing that to everybody all year long.”
AHS outscored the opposition by almost 500 points on the season
It allowed just 230 points while scoring 710
Nickles pointed out that the Panthers had trailed by double digits in two of their four playoff games
“When we got down 6-0
they didn’t blink,” Nickles said
The Panthers didn’t break again and didn’t bend that much
Cross rushed for 109 yards and had 89 passing yards for 198 total yards
The Panthers forced a 3-downs-and-out series for CHS on the ensuing possession
A 29-yard punt gave AHS a short field as it started at the Cross 37
Abbeville used nine plays to score with Leach going in from five yards out
Leach then run for the 2-point conversion to make it 15-6 with 1:47 to go in the second quarter
“We just made some turnovers
that I thought gave them a short field,” Wright said
“A team like that you can’t give them anything
You have to make them earn everything.”
Any comeback hopes the Trojans may have entertained were shot down as Abbeville receied the second-half kickoff
The Panthers put together a 10-pay drive that ended with a a 40-yard touchdown from Leach
AHS scored twice more in the third quarter
a 23-yard run by Hadden and the TD pass from Leach to Baylor
who also finished with an interception on defense
When Burton scored on a 25-yard run early in the fourth quarter to make ot 56-12
that instituted the start of the running clock for the remainder of the game
MahKy Green had a 49-yard run for the Trojans’ final touchdown
Harris then threw to Ramsey for the 2-point conversion
“We’re just going to let this one sit for a while and get back to work and see if we can get back here again.”
The state title was the 13th in school history for Abbeville
The Panthers have won seven in the past 10 years with four of those coming in succession
Leach said he will always remember being part of two title teams
“Playing for Abbeville was a dream growing up,” he said
“To be able to come and win a state championship my senior year and win another as a sophomore is a great feeling
just to win with these guys,” said Paul
We’re bringing the trophy home.”
KATC - After weeks of uncertainty and a temporary stay at the Sunbelt Lodge Motel in Abbeville
Herod Apartments were able to return home Monday morning
who has called the Sunbelt Lodge Motel home since February 14
was among several tenants who were asked to leave their apartments due to safety violations
which include non-functional smoke detectors
fire extinguishers without current certification tags
and a sprinkler system that had not been checked in over a decade
Plowden spoke about the challenges of the situation
“I packed a suitcase, filled some clothes up. I mean, Ms. Penelope, we didn’t have any resources,” he said on March 6
"I'm just grateful right now that we’re going back to the apartments and that everything is sufficient and proper," he said
While his original unit is still undergoing repairs
Plowden will temporarily move into another unit
and hopefully everything will go all fine," he said
When asked about how it feels to be returning
I want to thank the Christian Service Center and the church for helping me
The fire marshal will return to inspect Plowden’s apartment
Plowden is thankful to be back where he feels most at ease
