AMNEVILLE, France (AP) — Demi Vollering’s chances of winning consecutive women’s Tour de France races was in jeopardy Thursday after the defending champion crashed at high speed in the final moments of the fifth stage from Bastogne, Belgium to Amnéville in France.
Vollering was descending into Amnéville and coming out of a roundabout when more than 10 riders crashed around her. After a few moments, she was able to continue but her three closest rivals in the overall standings — Puck Pieterse, Kasia Niewiadoma and Kristen Faulkner had raced on to the finish.
Vollering’s 22-second overall lead on her Dutch compatriot Pieterse was gone. Niewiadoma, third overall in the 2022 and 2023 races, sprinted across the line in second and took the overall lead while Blanka Vas of Hungary won the stage.
The race will continue to wind through eastern France to finish Sunday at the top of the punishing climb of the Alpe d’Huez’s famous 21 hairpin bends.

Luminescences Festival 2024 Photo: Zoo Amnéville
The Amnéville Zoo draws a very positive assessment of its year 2024 in more ways than one.
The year 2025 is starting under the same auspices, with Luminescences 3 Magic Indies welcoming its 100,000th visitor on 1 January, one month earlier than the previous edition. This success is already encouraging our teams to prepare an even more spectacular fourth edition.
The Amnéville Zoo is experiencing significant growth in several areas. Group attendance has risen by 17%, confirming the growing interest in our offers for work councils and associations. The 2024 Christmas Tree Festival attracted 10,130 participants in just seven days, including 46 work councils. The Luminescences Festival was a major contributor to this success, offering visitors a magical experience.
The number of schoolchildren welcomed increased by 16% in 2024, confirming the zoo’s role in environmental education. Thanks to a special rate and an enhanced educational offer, more and more schools are choosing the zoo for their educational outings. The visits, which can be free or supervised, enable pupils to discover biodiversity in an interactive way that is adapted to each school cycle.
Commitment to conservation remains a priority. In 2024, 30,000 visitors were made aware of biodiversity issues at dedicated events, and €12,500 was raised to fund conservation actions. The zoo also took part in a project to reintroduce Ural owls in collaboration with a German association, enabling an individual born at the zoo to be released in Bavaria to bolster the wild population.
New species joined the zoo in 2024, some rare in France such as the fossa, roan antelope, skunk, Mississippi alligator, European otter and Bengal cat.

'It's not something that we celebrate or that we are proud of
but it is also part of racing' says Canyon-SRAM leader on mass-crash in Amnéville
Kasia Niewiadoma celebrated a hard-fought second place on stage 5
where she moved into the yellow jersey at the Tour de France Femmes
The Canyon-SRAM rider was part of a small front group that emerged after a mass crash with 6km to go split the field
she said she was unaware that overnight leader Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) was involved in the accident that caused her to lose 1:47 in Amnéville
"I didn't know that a crash happened and thought that the field split up on the descent because it has happened many times leading into the final. At that moment, racing instinct kicked in, and we just wanted to make it to the final," Niewiadoma said
so we were not sure what the last 500 metres looked like
and then we learned about everything that happened [in the crash - ed.]
"It's not something we celebrate or are proud of but is also part of racing
A break of three was almost caught near the end of the 152.5km stage from Bastogne to Amnéville when a sharp chicane out of a roundabout just over 6km from the finish caused a mass crash
A group that included Niewiadoma and teammate Chloé Dygert split off the front
and the time trial world champion put the pressure on until 1.2km to go
it was the Polish rider along with Blanka Vas (SD Worx-Protime)
Liane Lippert (Movistar) and Kristen Faulkner (EF-Oatly-Cannondale) who sprinted for the line with Vas taking the win
Dygert confirmed that she didn't know Vollering had been injured in the crash
I heard that there was a crash on that turn
I just followed what I was told by our leader," she said
said the riders were notified of the crash after the race had finished
and she expressed her concern for Vollering
"I only realised at the finish line when they told me
but it's not nice to take it because of a crash
and they will fight in the climbs," she said
Niewiadoma now leads the Tour de France Femmes GC standings
19 seconds ahead of Faulkner and 22 seconds ahead of Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Deceuninck)
the overall classification is not sewn up with the two mountain stages still to come: stage 7 into La Grand Bornand and stage 8
I also know that I spent a lot of time preparing for those two final stages
I've just been waiting for those mountains," Niewiadoma said
knowing I put a lot of effort and work into improving my long climbing skills
I am also aware that Demi is extremely strong

This is another Tour de France Femmes stage similar to the Ardennes Classics
further suiting explosive riders who thrive on short
The 152.5km route between Bastogne and Amnéville has five classified ascents and constantly undulating roads
with the final kilometer being an uphill one
Breakaway riders will seek to use the early category three Côte de Hott as a springboard
knowing that the GC riders will slug it out later on
It will be important for those making an early move to gain a sufficient buffer to stay away
but nothing is guaranteed for the escapees
Race director Marion Rousse: “The very undulating route (featuring more than 2,000m of vertical gain) and regular changes of direction should produce a dynamic stage

Action moved forward at the 2011 World Poker Tour Amneville with Day 1b on Wednesday
With the 203 players who came out to the felt
a total of 379 came to play throughout both Day 1 starts
They generated a prize pool of €1,164,288 with first place worth €310,633 plus a $25,500 WPT Championship seat
About half of the field (105) was left at day's end
Leading the way was Jean-Francois Rigollet
Like Day 1a's chip leader Nicolas Babel
He only has four career cashes and $46,576 in career tournaments earnings
The largest cash of his career was in March 2011 when he placed second in a $1,000 Wynn Classic event for $27,315
Plenty of notables were in action on Day 1b
Some of those who hit the rail throughout the day were Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier
According to the WPT Live Update Team
Grospellier was eliminated during Level 5 with the blinds at 150/300/25
Bastien Faessen raised from the small blind after action folded to him and Grospellier reraised all-in from the big blind
The flip went Faessen's way as the board ran out in his favor to send Grospellier out the door
Also eliminated on the day was defending WPT Amneville champion Sam El Sayed
His exit opened the door for a new champion to be crowned this year
El Sayed bested the 542-player field to earn €426,425
Rounding out the top five behind Rigollet from Day 1b are Thibaut Durand (147,300)
Erik Von Buxhoeveden (142,700) and Edouard Sadoun (125,500)
Paul Berende and Ilan Rouah all bagged up plenty of chips and will take their big stacks into Day 2
Mattern and Rettenmaier all bagged up over 100,000 in chips
Rigollet leads all players and Day 1a's Babel comes sits in second place with 163,600 in chips

And usually I'll hear something that will sort of indicate the direction and then we'll talk about it from there."

Demi Vollering loses 1:47 in overall standings after crash in final 10km
and Kristen Faulkner (EF-Oatly-Cannondale) in the sprint of a group of four that emerged in a finish marred by a mass crash six kilometres from the finish
The most prominent victim of the crash was maillot jaune Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) who ended up losing 1:47 minutes
I really did not expect this today because I felt so bad during the race
so I did not know what happened at the back
and now I have mixed feelings,” said the stage winner
In the last kilometre, Faulkner attacked to anticipate a sprint, almost a copy of the final in the Olympic road race – but this time
The peloton did not let any breakaway go in the first part of the race
Loes Adegeest (FDJ-Suez) succeeded in getting away after the Côte de Saint-Pancré with 80km to go
Julie Van de Velde (AG Insurance-Soudal) and Fem van Empel (Visma-Lease a Bike) bridged to Adegeest to establish the break of the day
There were more attacks from the peloton as first Maaike Coljé (Arkéa-B&B Hotels)
and finally Maëva Squiban (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) went on solo chases
with other riders also trying in smaller or larger groups
but none of them ever made it to the front
the break of three was 2:45 minutes ahead of the peloton where SD Worx-Protime began to chase in earnest
soon joined by Lidl-Trek and Movistar Team
the penultimate classified climb of the stage
the gap had been brought down to 1:36 minutes
and it was below a minute at the bottom of the Côte de Montois-la-Montagne
Stage 4 winner and polka-dot jersey Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Deceuninck) set a hard pace in the peloton
and Adegeest kept a 25-second lead over the QOM
Van de Velde then rode her two companions off her wheel on the slight rise towards the bonus sprint
but Van Empel and Adegeest returned on the descent afterwards
The peloton was still 23 seconds behind at the 10km mark
The break was almost caught when a very sharp chicane out of a roundabout just over 6km from the finish caused a mass crash
Most riders did not expect such a sharp corner and carried too much speed
Pfeiffer Georgi (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) and Magdeleine Vallières Mill (EF-Oatly-Cannondale) had to abandon the race because of their injuries while a.o
and Usoa Ostolaza (Laboral Kutxa-Fundación Euskadi) lost valuable time in GC in addition to any injuries they may have suffered
dropping Van de Velde and Van Empel and holding off a small chase group until she was caught with 2.4km to go
and Cédrine Kerbaol (Ceratizit-WNT) at the front of the race
and when the US rider swung off 1.2km from the line
An acceleration from Emma Norsgaard just inside the flamme rouge did not reduce the group further
leaving Faulkner to make her move with about 750 metres to go when Norsgaard was finished
Vas immediately went after the Olympic and US champion and closed the gap
leaving four riders to sprint for the victory
When Lippert started her sprint with about 220 metres to go
Niewiadoma came past Lippert 50 metres from the line
but Vas squeezed past on the last metres to win the stage while Niewiadoma took the overall lead

Thursday's stage enters France with 2,000 metres of testing climbs from Bastogne to Amnéville
Stage 5 of the Tour de France Femmes heads to French territory for the first time on this Grand Tour
Connecting Bastogne to Amnéville with 152.km
the route may be described as a flat day set up for sprinters
The rolling terrain is dotted with five small
classified climbs that add up to 2,000 metres of elevation gain
There is just one intermediate sprint in Mercy-Le-Haut
is 22 seconds back and Niewiadoma is 34 seconds back
Two other riders are also under a minute from yellow
Kristen Faulkner (EF-Oatly-Cannondale) in fourth and Juliette Labous (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) in fifth
The peloton rolls out from Belgium where the women’s pro peloton has started Liège-Bastogne-Liège since 2017
This year in addition to the Tour de France Femmes start
Bastogne also celebrates the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge from World War II
There’s no time for the riders to check out local history
as they set to carve out their own achievements before the big mountains on the weekend
the first categorised climb appears - the 1.4km Côte de Hott
This should serve as a launchpad for attacks
A pair of category 4 climbs announce the entry into France after the opening 60km - Côte de Saint-Pancré (1.5km at 3.9%) and 10km later the summit of Côte de Fermont (1.5km at 4.6%).
There is still relentless ups and downs to the intermediate sprint in Mercy-Le-Haut
which signals 19km to Côte de Briey (1.1km and 4.4%) and another 27.5km to the finish
the Côte de Montois-la-Montagne (1.7 kilometres at 6%) looms
and offers bonus points at the top as well
The last 15 kilometres offer some descending
with no let up for a challenging final kilometre that begins with a 6% ramp and then finishes at 4% at the line in Amnéville

likely caused by the anti-inflammatories administered to relieve osteoarthritis
while last summer's heat wave was raging in the region
the bear's body was stored in a cold room designed for leftover bone and meat food
while waiting to be transported to the rendering plant
Maillot continued to clarify the situation
explaining the bear's body was mistakenly taken by the company responsible for removing the other waste on 26 July
They realised their mistake at the waste treatment centre and immediately reported it to the zoo
The body was stored until the rendering team arrived on 30 July to remove it in its entirety
The zoological park confirmed it is subject to regular health checks and is said to be "particularly hurt" by accusations made in the press
An endangered species native to South Africa these wild cats are extremely striking due to their white fur and golden or even blue eyes, due to a lack of melanin.
It is only after two years of negotiations with a zoo in Angers in the west of France where the animals have lived up until now, that the move will be made. “The white lions will live in an area of about 500 square metres just for them,” explained Amnéville Zoo's director Michel Louis. Visitors will be able to see the lions directly through a window and fences.
"We thought their habitat with windows good for the public to make lovely photos, and fences to keep the idea of proximity."
Amnéville hopes that the mother will give birth to more cubs thus contributing to the protection of the species. In fact a carer at Angers zoo hinted that the female could possibly already be pregnant.
According to legend, the white lion is a holy animal and a messenger of the gods. "The Zulus believe that they bring luck. Unfortunately, today many lions are bred for hunting in South Africa," stated Michel Louis.

has welcomed the arrival of five white lion cubs.21/04/2015Share(CS) Amnéville Zoo
has welcomed the arrival of five white lion cubs
The five cubs were born on April 12 after a gestation period of 110 days by their mother Malindi
The lioness had arrived at Amnéville Zoo together with Bouba
They were previously owned by the “Zoo de la Flèche” in the west of France
The white lion is native to the Timbavati Game Reserve
which lies adjacent to the Kruger National Park in South Africa
It is a natural genetic mutation of the South African lion
White lions are coveted by hunters and poachers and have become very rare in the wild
A conservation programme by South African lion biologists Linda Tucker and Jason Turner aims at reintroducing lions born in zoos into the wild at Timbavati
Amnéville Zoo in a press statement did not specify whether any of its cubs would be used for the programme
The five cubs can already be seen at the public

That's the opinion of the French Court of Auditors
but the local commune refuse this as an option
The slope is actually the longest in the world at 620 metres long and 90 metres high
Its construction in 2005 and extension in 2008 cost 20 million euros
Having studied the Snowhall's accounts the French Court of Auditors reached the sobering conclusion that the attraction is suffering a major deficit that has been "obscured over the years."
the court saw no prospect for improvement--on the contrary
The target number of visitors per year of 160,000 has not been achieved since 2009
This means that the Snowhall is unable to pay its lease to Amnéville commune
the court stated that there is only one possible scenario: the Snowhall must close as soon as possible
Mayor of Amnéville Eric Munier stated that the commune was “trying everything to save the Snowhall.”
Munier applied pressure to reduce the ski centre's debt burden
This has been successful to some extent as the Snowhall's debt has fallen by 4 million euros
with 20 million euros of debt hanging over it
the Snowhall still has a major mountain to climb

who is the first white rhino to be born at Amneville Zoo
was born on December 1 after 17 months spent in his mother's womb
were saved by the zoo which purchased them from a farm in South Africa
They were originally intended to be sold for use in Chinese medicines
wild white rhino populations have been decimated by poachers who hunt them for their horns
The white rhino is actually gray-brown in colour
Its name comes from a misunderstanding of Afrikaans "wijde" which means "wide" (like the lips of the animal)
which was translated into English as "white," which means "white."

Olaf died naturally in his sleep on the 27 July
The zoo's caretakers are now watching over his little brother Tromso
The two bears have been together since Tromso's birth at Berlin's winter circus
The Amnéville Zoo recovered them and gave them a new home after the circus closed down
Olaf and Tromso enjoyed a peaceful retirement after more than a decade of entertaining the crowds with their dances
The female baby, named Bayami, which already weighs 40 kilos, was born to parents Benny and Yoruba.
Bayami is part of a subspecies of the southern white rhinoceros, which is native to southern Africa, of which only 20,000 remain in the world.
It is the second time in recent years a white rhino was born at the zoo. In December 2014, a male white rhino, Shango, was born, offering hope for the rare species.
Meanwhile, on June 30, three baby white tigers, two females, Jada and Maila, and one male, Thimphu, were born at Amnéville Zoo. They were born to mother Orissa, for whom this was her third litter. The cubs were named after Nepalese towns.

Kali and Shouka, two California sea lions, and Sparrow a Patagonian fur seal, were born at the beginning of July.
They come weeks after the arrival of new gorillas as well as two young snowy owls, six black kites, two turkey vultures and four dwarf Asian otters. Indeed, the zoo has seen scores of new births in the last months, with 32 new animals born there in May.
From May to June, the French zoo located close to the Luxembourg border became a nursery with a number of exceptional births that resulted from international programmes aimed at protecting endangered species.
Among them were the birth of a sea lion called Zoé, four lion cubs - Simba, Djemba, Diani and Kassanga - a black panther called Java and a tapir named Loucas.
They were the most recent in a series of rare maternal happenings at the site which saw the addition of seven squirrel monkeys, three Humboldt penguins, two white brush marmosets, a griffon vulture, a giant kingfisher, three snowy owls, four black kites and one red kite.
Here are some of the best road trip destinations in Luxembourg
the birds sing early in the morning and the sun shines all day
many of us start to get the itch of Fernweh
Fernweh is one of my favorite German words that has no proper English equivalent
in that it actually means you’re yearning to go away somewhere
The closest you’ve probably heard is Wanderlust
which is a German word that made it into the English language
Another advantage to living in Luxembourg is that you can quench your Fernweh quickly by driving an hour in any direction
For those of you who are dying for a short getaway
let me recommend the following day trip destinations:
This is a great place to visit if you’re in the mood for some touristy family fun. Amnéville is known for its zoo, aquarium, thermal baths, swimming and golf courses. And it’s only a 45-minute drive from Luxembourg City
and this place is what people picture when they think of the quintessential German town
and quaint shopping can be found only 90 minutes from Luxembourg
If you’ve never been to Germany before
be sure to enjoy a Spaghettieis at an ice cream parlor
order an Apfelschorle (apple juice and carbonated water)
and have a regional speciality like Leberknödel (liver dumplings)
And just so that you don’t think my only attraction to Germany is the food, you will love taking a cruise on the Moselle. It’s an entire afternoon of castles, vineyards, and beautiful villages in the sun and fresh air. Talk about getting away from it all!en.bernkastel.de
You don’t have to be a history buff to get something out of a trip to Bastogne
The Historical Centre has a very interesting WWII exhibit and the impressive American war memorial is within walking distance
The Bois de la Paix (Wood of Peace) is a memorial forest of 4,000 trees; take a peaceful walk or a day tour of the battlefields
you might as well stop at a fritterie and have some fries
Bastogne is approximately one hour from Luxembourg City
Those who would like a unique nature experience should definitely take a trip to the volcanic crater lakes near Daun; it’s approximately an hour and 45 minutes from Luxembourg City
The area has dozens of hiking and biking trails
You can also you can rent a boat or go swimming on one of the lakes
The water-filled volcanic craters (Gemündener Maar, Schalkenmehrener Maar, Weinfelder Maar) are connected by a hiking trail. The entire Eifel region has an incredible infrastructure for local tourists (see also www.eifel.de)
Walking through impressive gardens and castles on a lovely day is my idea of paradise. For those of you fortunate enough to have a more enthusiastic travel companion, I can recommend the Annevoie Gardens and castle, located 2 hours from Luxembourg City.www.eupedia.com/belgium/annevoie
Now I’ve also got the dreaded Fernweh myself. Wherever you may decide to go, do get out and enjoy this beautiful part of the world – happy exploring!

An enthusiastic audience praised Shen Yun Performing Arts during their run at the Le Galaxie Theatre in Amneville
They highlighted Shen Yun’s high quality performance
enchanted by the show’s portrayal of traditional Chinese culture
said: “It’s truly a super enchanting show
one that I highly recommend everyone to see
It is genuinely magical and transitions from the real to the unreal with imagination
I believe it’s really a great performance.”
It’s my first time witnessing a Chinese dance show and I am very excited.”
Pierre Bernard, a computer science engineer, said: “I was truly enchanted by the performance. It possesses grace, melody, and exceptional grandeur and, moreover, especially from a historical perspective. It was a genuine pleasure to attend this with my daughter. It’s an immense joy. We had been waiting for Shen Yun for a long time, and we hope to see it again very soon.”
“The artistic level, as presented, is exceptional, as it features remarkable dance combined with extraordinary acrobatics on stage,” Mr. Balthazar said.
“The time flew by very quickly, and it was truly, truly, truly very intense and rich, and the performance is absolutely a must-see and truly exceptional. You have to take the trip to see it,” Mr. Bernard said.
“We’re transported to Asia with a great deal of magic. It has an effect that makes you feel transported, as if we’re in Asia today,” Mr. Balthazar said.
“I feel very, very good. It’s delightful to be swept away by the music, which is in this enchanting display of colors. It’s very beautiful,” Mr. Thierry said.
“One immediately senses a lot of intensity, a lot of kindness, warmth, and lots of understanding and indulgence,” Mr. Bernard said.
The audience members commented on the kindness and serenity they felt in the show.
“Indeed, the show is full of kindness and you can truly sense a serenity throughout, and you really feel that the people. You feel a serenity in the show, a sort of well-being that emanates both from the choreography that is performed, and also from the presenters of the show,” Mr. Balthazar said.
“You can really feel the power, tranquility, and wisdom. The connection has indeed been well conveyed. You can truly sense the divine presence that shines through all of us here on Earth. It’s very well executed, very well executed,” Mr. Thierry said.
“In the current geopolitical context, witnessing such performances certainly helps to restore a bit of hope, and especially to realize that humanity, when it creates beautiful things, whether it be music, dance, or the arts, can unify everyone. And so it would be good sometimes to come to shows, to follow culture, to take up culture, and to be able to appreciate and see the world differently, and above all to have a lot of indulgence for others,” Mr. Bernard said.
“I believe this show can bring understanding of what is still happening in China today, and it embodies the kindness that should be present everywhere in the world. Precisely with everything that’s going on in the world at the moment, [it helps make the world] become more peaceful and serene. And with regard to all these dances in particular, we should be able to find serenity,” Mr. Balthazar said.
