Vicious heat waves are sweeping parts of the globe, along with the dangers that come with blazing-hot temperatures: wildfires, dehydration and even death
The hot weather could also push prices up for food
Western Europe has been facing sweltering temperatures; the thermostat hit triple digits more than 20 times in Seville in southern Spain in July. More than 20 wildfires were also burning in Spain and Portugal
and persistent drought has left rivers and reservoirs running so low that they're exposing ancient artifacts
(Russia and Ukraine are among the world's biggest exporters of grain.)
But climate change is becoming a driver of inflation
wildfires and other disasters have been wreaking economic havoc
"Heatflation" might already have something to do with escalating food costs around the world
A heat wave in India this spring devastated wheat plants
searing heat and drought in the Great Plains scorched the wheat crop and also enabled wheat-munching grasshopper populations to flourish
The grain's price nearly doubled to $10.17 a bushel
Extreme temperatures endanger livestock, too: The heat wave that struck much of the country in June caused thousands of cattle to die of heat stress in Kansas
"We all know our grocery bills are going up," Bob Keefe, the author of the book "Climatenomics," said when we interviewed him in June
"Part of the reason is that when you lose crops to storms or drought or flooding
In a December 2021 report
researchers at the European Central Bank examined the evidence that abnormal temperatures can drive inflation
Looking at seasonal temperatures and price indicators in 48 countries
they found that hot summers had "by far the largest and longest-lasting impact" on food prices
The effect lasted almost a year and was especially noticeable in developing countries
"We find that higher temperatures over recent decades have played a non-negligible role in driving price developments," the authors concluded
While climate action and economic concerns are often pitted against one another
the evidence is piling up that in many cases

As part of the Loire Riverbed Rebalancing Program
carried out by Voies Navigables de France (VNF)
the National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (Inrap) conducted two excavations along the riverbanks
specifically in Ancenis-Saint-Géréon (Loire-Atlantique)
These archaeological investigations have revealed surprising discoveries
including a stone and wood structure from the Roman era
as well as the remains of a medieval boat from the 9th or 10th century
which involves reducing or removing numerous groynes along the Loire
poses a short-term threat to several archaeological remains trapped in the sand
such as ancient constructions or shipwrecks
were investigated during the low water period between August and October
sudden floods or variations in water levels complicated some operations
as occurred with the excavation on Mouchet Island
which was interrupted on September 10 due to rising river levels
The excavations have provided valuable information about the use and history of the Loire
initially thought to be related to modern-era navigation
carbon-14 dating revealed that it corresponded to the Roman period
composed of horizontal beams and wooden posts anchored in the riverbed
was likely used as a bank reinforcement system or possibly as a river crossing to connect nearby settlements
The excavation area is 1.5 km from the Airennes slope on the right bank
where a Gallo-Roman occupation has been documented
and 1.5 km from the ancient settlement of La Nigaudière on the left bank
The structure discovered on Coton Island may have been part of the connection between these ancient settlements and the river
rivers were widely used for the transportation of goods and people
The waterways formed an important network for distributing craft and agricultural products throughout Gaul and to cities with ports
The original layout of Coton Island has not yet revealed all its secrets
but it undoubtedly played a crucial role in both river access and the protection of the head of Coton Island
built of oak wood and adapted for river navigation
The boat’s architecture is unique in the region and shows advanced shipbuilding techniques
influenced by ancient vessels from the Rhône Valley
Ongoing studies aim to define more precisely the original use of the boat
which may have been employed for transporting goods or people
On the occasion of the European Heritage Days
Inrap will organize a screening and conference at the open-air theater in Ancenis on September 21
archaeologists Anne Hoyau-Berry and Yann Viau will present the results of the 2024 excavations and share details about previous research from 2022
which included the discovery of medieval fisheries and 17th- and 18th-century shipwrecks on Coton and Poulas Islands

NATIONAL ASSEMBLY: Member of Parliament Fabien Roussel
gestures before French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne delivers a speech to announce the use of the article 49.3
a special clause in the French Constitution
to push the pensions reform bill through the lower house of parliament without a vote by lawmakers
PROTEST: Protesters take part in a demonstration against the French government's pension reform plan
as part of the eighth day of national strike and protests
PARIS — French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne used a special procedure to push an unpopular pensions bill through the National Assembly without a vote Thursday
triggering boos and shouts of "Resign!" in rare chaotic scenes in the French parliament
But it also shows President Emmanuel Macron and his government failed to garner a majority in parliament
in a blow to the centrist president and his ability to win support from other parties for further reforms
Borne was greeted by boos and jeers as she arrived in the National Assembly
to announce that she would invoke article 49.3 of the constitution to skip a vote on the reform measures
The session was suspended for two minutes after left-wing lawmakers singing the national anthem prevented Borne from speaking
Some held placards reading "No to 64 years."
Borne took the floor but her speech was largely drowned out by the same boos and chants
"We cannot gamble on the future of our pensions
this reform is necessary," Borne told lawmakers
to explain why she was using the 49.3 procedure
Far-right leader Marine Le Pen said Borne should resign
"This last-minute resort to 49.3 is an extraordinary sign of weakness," she said
Asked about a possible resignation in an interview with the TF1 television evening news
Borne said she still had a lot of work ahead of her: "There is the energy crisis
the climate crisis and the Ukraine war is continuing," she said
a spontaneous and unplanned protest of about 7,000 people against the reform continued into the night on the Place de la Concorde in Paris
Police fired tear gas and charged in an effort to disperse the crowd
In several other French cities including Marseille there were also spontaneous protests against the reform
French unions called for another day of strikes and action against the reform on March 23
Opinion polls show that a vast majority of voters oppose the pension reform
who say there are other ways to balance the accounts
The government's use of the 49.3 procedure is likely to further enrage unions
protesters and left-wing opposition parties who say the pension overhaul is unfair and unnecessary
Socialist Party head Olivier Faure told Reuters earlier on Thursday that such a move could unleash "uncontrollable anger" after weeks of rolling strikes and protests that have hit power production
blocked some shipments from refineries and seen garbage pile up on the streets of Paris
"We're as determined as ever," said CGT unionist Christophe Jouanneau at a refinery on strike in the western France city of Donges
Opposition parties said they would request a vote of no confidence in the government
That is unlikely to pass as most conservative lawmakers would not be expected to back it - unless a surprise alliance of MPs from all sides is formed
from the far-left to the far-right and including the conservatives
The government had initially said the reform would allow the system to break even by 2030
with 17.7 billion euros in additional annual contributions coming from pushing back the retirement age and extending the pay-in period
It says the accounts will still be balanced in that timeframe
with additional income compensating measures agreed by Macron's camp to try to get LR's support
including a softener for those who started to work early and a top-up for some working mothers

According to the proposed merger announced on 12 February
French vegetable co-operative Val Nantais is set to become the vegetable division of large agricultural co-operative Terrena
based in Ancenis in the west-coast department of Loire-Atlantique
Should the merger gain the approval of the boards of the two structures
as well as the go-ahead of the competition authority
then it will become operational by the end of the first term of 2014
which boasts a turnover of €55m and has 45 members and 250 employees
a quarter of which is exported to northern Europe
Val Nantais has been working in partnership with the Bonduelle Group
the global leader in fresh-cut vegetables with a turnover of €1.9bn and 57 processing and production sites in 12 countries
Bonduelle relies on Val Nantais for the salad production of its members
as well as on the fresh-cut processing unit
The deal with Terrena is reportedly set to strengthen synergies and open up new opportunities for development
Terrena has 22,000 members and 11,848 employees
achieving a turnover in 2011 of €4.4bn and marketing its products under various brands
the co-operative intends to develop its ecologically friendly 'Nouvelle Agriculture' range of products
which also places a particular emphasisis on the nutritional benefits of the produce
Val Nantais would apparently retain its identity and headquarters in Saint-Julien-de-Concelles
with its president Patrick Briand joining the Terrena board and presiding over Terrena's vegetable commission
while director Didier Baley would join the upstream management committee and steer the vegetable business
