makes its last stop before Bologna 2025 at the comics fair in France
At the Bologa Children’s Book Fair Comics Corner
which in 2024 hosted more than 700 business meetings in the comics and graphic storytelling sector

The public-facing show at Angoulême is in its 52nd year
and the Bologna exhibition will be at the International Rights Market (MID) at Stand RL41
for those who may be bound for the event this year
Termed the “Grand Tour,” the Bologna exhibition is again supported by the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) and the Italian ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation
And there’s clear reason to be there
Figures used by the Bologna fair indicate that in Italy
in particular—where spending on the purchase of comics has tripled since 2019—comics for children and young people are growing especially fast at a rate described as being greater than 22 percent
A look at a bit of the visual identity created by Bruno de Almeida
for Bologna Children’s Book Fair 2025
One of the attractions of Angoulême for organizers of the Italian trade show is that Bologna opened its physical Comics Corner in 2022 in response to the growth of the international comics sector in world publishing.

Quickly attracting comics professionals to the Emilia-Romagna (after having been established in Bologna’s digital format in 2020)
the sprawling “corner” last year drew more than 70 publishers representing 21 countries and engaging in more than 700 business meetings
the 2024 Bologna Children’s Book Fair logged 1,523 exhibitors
the main fair and Bologna Book Plus drew 31,735 trade visitors a gain of some 10 percent above the trade show’s statistics of 2023 (which drew 28
New markets added to the Bologna array last year included Angola
The 2025 guest of honor market at Bologna is to be Estonia
Bologna Children’s Book Fair has been expanding its footprint with the additions of whole sectors of specialized publishing and trading centers
This makes the fair at Angoulême and the Bologna exhibition there a chance to promote Bologna’s still-young TV/Film Rights Center and the first iteration of the Games Business Center, which is a collaboration with Frankfurter Buchmesse (October 15 to 19)
are understood to be closely related to comics
so the synergy of the Comics Corner and these cross-media elements of the show are expected to augment each other

as Chris Geary hits the international market
"A little adventure to start the day… unable to get an Uber for some time
the little trio headed out to the nearest bus stop
and while I thought she was asking the worst three people for directions
she asked if we were there for the festival
and we then whizzed along the mountainside like on a crazy Scaletrix and then tumbled out in the centre of town
or how she knew we were there for the festival
we pretty much bounced back between the Le Monde Des Bulles and International Rights Market
or Publishers that we'd like to talk to would be either doing the same
This day also felt a lot busier than the previous two."
I think that just the Le Monde Des Bulles itself is about the same size as Thought Bubble
Which shows you the size of festival that we're lucky to have
In the last hour or so of the time spent at the show
we went to Le Nouveau Monde which is a more independent version of the Le Monde Des Bulles with the smaller publishers set up there
Spoke to a few of them in regards to submitting work/projects
Day One past, and Day Three to come, on the Angoulême tag…

has won this year's Angoulême International Comics Festival Grand Prix 2025
Anouk Ricard has won the Grand Prix of the 52nd edition of the Angoulême International Comics Festival
The prize will also see Anouk Ricard made an honorary President of next year's Angoulême International Comics Festival
The three nominees were Catherine Meurisse
It is the first time all three finalists have been women and the first time there have been two women winners in a row
Fellow nominees Catherine Meurisse is a cartoonist for the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo
She is a member of France's Academy of Fine Arts and has been a finalist several times before
Alison Bechdel is an American graphic novelist and cartoonist
best known for her controversial and frequently banned graphic novel Fun Home and for popularising the Bechdel Test
as Chris Geary wraps up his epic international adventure
this was a very slight day. Most publishers had left the International Rights Market
seems that was mostly a Wednesday to Friday part of the Festival and the Le Monde Des Bulles was in full Saturday at a Convention mode
As was the Indie section. It reminded me of old school Thought Bubble the year before it moved from the Royal Armouries into the Centre of Leeds. Anyone who had been to the couple of Thought Bubbles that were there
will have an idea of what Angoulême is like
we spent some time at the Musée de la Bande Dessinée
A great place to see a wide variety of Original Art
and the main foyer/hallway section was set up to display an exhibition of (what I believe) were local Children at various ages showing the world what they can do, Looks like there's a lot of great Artists ready to take over the world
Unfortunately didn't make it to the Manga section
which I was told was equally as massive and amazing as the rest of the Festival
I'll get a chance to visit again in the future
After another meeting at 4pm we decided to call it a day
which turned out to be our regular for the time spent here
and then went to the local Food Market to eat
if you think it would be useful – I'm thinking of doing a "Creator's Guide to Angoulême" to help anyone in the future hoping to get there."
"Overall thoughts – Amazing. I'm not the first person to say that
but I think it's worth saying. Everyone that puts on a Convention of any sort needs to look to Angoulême as a successful template and do whatever they can to replicate it
What I think is amazing about the Festival
in comparison to the types of conventions that we have in England
or anyone selling fan-made trinkets and prints
etc. We absolutely need more of these. (like we didn't know this already…) It was also an event that included whole families
selection of Comics for everyone. A true celebration of the Art form
I've not had the chance to visit there at the moment
all of the publishers were represented by Editors
or the Publishers themselves and were open to looking at work
Whether it was a portfolio or a finished book
they gave feedback and said to email a follow-up if they felt the need. This is pretty much non-existent in British conventions. We used to have them
Way back when I showed my work to Editors from both Marvel and DC when they were just sitting at their tables. We as an Industry need that to come back. It's the only way for it to truly grow and have more events like this over here… I think that's it."
Catch up with the rest of the show on the Angoulême tag…
"Spent most of the day moving between the Espace Création Nouvelle where we were pitching a new project to Publishers and the main part of the Festival
There are three ways to go from one section to the other
"The pitching process is split into two parts
The first is a general meeting with one or two Creators/Editors that look at the project in order to decide if it's in a good position to be pitched
and who would be the best Publisher to pitch to
In the few hours between we grabbed a bit of lunch
then quickly visited the Le Monde Des Bulles – the main place where all the larger Publishers had set up
there are sections that are bigger than some book shops
"The other section that got most of our attention was the International Rights Market (Marché des Droits)
This is where most of the publishers attending the Festival look into publishing
with a presentation area and a small reception area where the various Publishers and Creators can have a drink and a bit of a chat
after having a another quick look at the two areas after our second meeting
and head out into the town for some food and drinks."
Day Two and Three to come on the Angoulême tag…

The Biggest Comic Book Festival In The West..
have headed from London to the Western world's biggest comic book festival being held this week
the Angoulême International Comics Festival
maybe those who will be interested in publishing their own work further
"The three intrepid explorers have made it
I've attached some of the photos I took along the way
Chris Geary tells Bleeding Cool "The journey itself was pretty easy
Even with having to change twice. Strangely enough we could buy a ticket that included the first and third train
The town itself is a lot bigger than I originally thought
and by the time we got sorted in our Air B'n'B (about 10 minutes drive from the town centre
it was dark. So couldn't really see much of the town by the time we made it back for food. (Which was nice – shocker!) Today is the first day of the con proper." Josh Spiller has a few shots of the town as well… of the comics and of the comic obelisk
As Chris says "I think every town should have a Comic Obelisk."
And even without Chris, Simon and Josh, this years may have a very British feel. Last year, Posy Simmonds was the first British creator to win The Grand Prix at Angoulême, the most prestigious comic book prize on the planet

Comic books and bandes dessinées (graphic novels), have a respected heritage in France
and are celebrated as le neuvième art (the ninth art) along with poetry
But one city is particularly passionate about them
Angoulême in Charente is France’s undisputed capital of comics – home to the internationally renowned Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême (FIBD)
which runs from January 29 to February 2.
“The FIBD was founded in 1974 thanks to the initiative by two comics enthusiasts
deputy mayor of Angoulême and responsible for culture and communications
“Their vision was to promote comics as an art form in its own right
on a par with literature and cinema,” said Jean-Philippe Martin
scientific and programming adviser at the CIBDI

The festival was inspired by a 1972 exhibition dedicated to the art form in Angoulême
The first edition took place on January 25
in a disused wing of the Musée d'Angoulême
with the emergence of more mature comics aimed at an adult audience,” said Mr Martin.
“The festival came at just the right time to capitalise on this
The FIBD has rapidly become a meeting place for authors
encouraging exchanges between the various stakeholders in the industry.”
Its success continued to grow and during the 1984 festival the then culture minister Jack Lang announced a plan for Angoulême that included the development of the National Comics Center into the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l’image (CIBDI)
“Visitors to the Cité will find a unique setting on the banks of the Charente

and now presents the largest collection of comic strip originals on show in Europe
“The origins of the comic strip in Europe date back to the 19th Century
with pioneers such as the Swiss artist Rodolphe Töpffer
he published illustrated stories that were both satirical accounts and literary works
combining text and images in a continuous format
Illustrated magazines such as Le Charivari and Le Chat Noir provided a platform for artists such as Honoré Daumier
who played a role in influencing and defining the comic strip so it could tell stories or project views on political or social subjects
created by writer Jacqueline Rivière and illustrated by Joseph Pinchon
the story centred around a young Breton housemaid from Finistère
Belgium’s comic contribution also had a prolific impact on French comics and created countless collaborations.
Zig et Puce in 1925 was a Franco-Belgian comic series created by French artist and professional cartoonist Alain Saint-Ogan
who was the first French illustrator to adopt the speech bubble format
Les Aventures de Tintin was a huge pioneer in 1929 by Belgian cartoonist Hergé (Georges Remi)
also created by another Belgian – Peyo (Pierre Culliford)
“Although the eponymous characters and magazines Spirou (1938) and Tintin (1946) were Belgian creations
their influence in France was considerable
These two magazines became major platforms for comic strips
publishing works by authors such as André Franquin and Smurfs creator Peyo," said Mr Martin
most of the publishing industry and the creation of comics in both France and Belgium were either halted
or cartoonists were coerced into producing political propaganda
The American DC Comics (1934) and Marvel Comics (1939
post-war moral panic against US comics gave birth to a law to ‘protect’ French youth from US comics depicting violence and sexuality
Many viewed this as France’s way of protecting its own legacy
Comics magazine Pilote was launched on October 29
1959 by Frenchmen scriptwriter René Goscinny and cartoonist Albert Uderzo
with the first edition showcasing Astérix le Gaulois (1959)
It also introduced Les Pieds Nickelés (originally 1908) and Tintin to a wider audience

“The magazine epitomised the typically French comic strip which
although spreading to neighbouring countries
found immense popularity in France,” said Mr Martin
and are aimed at children and adults alike
It is between these types of magazines that the comic strip known as BD Franco-Belge comes into being.”
Comics started resonating with a more mature audience during the 1970s through publications including l'Echo des Savanes (1972)
Métal Hurlant (1974) and Fluide Glacial (1975)
with the term ‘graphic novel’ becoming more common
graphic novels are often aimed at an adult audience
which are often serialised in magazines or issues
graphic novels are generally published as complete books
The CIBDI organises around 10 temporary exhibitions a year
A big one in 2025 will be Plus loin: The new science fiction
which celebrates an author’s body of work; and the Fauve d’or
rewarding an album published the previous year
“The announcement of the Grand Prix at the Festival's opening ceremony is always eagerly awaited by the industry
Posy Simmonds was chosen,” said Ms Sichantho.

illustrator and writer Posy Simmonds MBE was crowned winner of Angoulême International Comics Festival (FIBD) 2024’s Grand Prix
making her the first British recipient and the fourth woman to be awarded the French lifetime achievement award
Posy spoke to The Connexion about her exhibition called Posy Simmonds
Herself. which will celebrate her work once more during the 52nd edition of the FIBD
“The title is taken from a magazine I did called Herself when I was between the ages of about 13 and 14,” she said
"It was sort of a spoof of a women's magazine at the time
I suppose that would have been in the early 1960s and I think it may be in the exhibition.”
Visitors will have the opportunity to see Posy classics up close
Posy enjoys a long relationship with France after studying at the Cours de Civilisation Française de la Sorbonne (CCFS)
a private French language institution in Paris
“I had done A-level French so I could write it
but I couldn't speak it for toffee,” she said
She then returned to London to attend the Central School of Art and Design

Posy was interested in cartoons from a young age
“I had always drawn and originally I actually wanted to do painting
I chose to be in the graphic design department
At that time it was mainly a typographic course
but I found it very useful ever since for doing my own lettering
but I managed to turn the projects that we were given into kind of illustration projects as well
so of course it was a great time then to be an art student.”

The works of Taiwanese artists are being featured at the 52nd Angouleme International Comics Festival
which was to end yesterday in the French city of Angouleme
“welcomes nearly 6,000 comics professionals from all over the world,” the Angouleme Tourist Office said
Taiwanese comics have been “steadily gaining popularity,” Representative to France Hao Pei-chih (郝培芝) said at the festival’s Taiwan Pavilion
adding that “Taiwan being a central theme has been increasingly recognized in France and Europe.”
organized by the Taiwan Creative Content Agency
about 130 original Taiwanese comics have been exhibited
including licensed French-language editions and those with potential in international markets
including Hsieh Tung-lin (謝東霖) and Rishiazao (日下棗)
such as drawing demonstrations held on the first day of the festival
Among those who visited the Taiwan Pavilion
founder of the French publisher Asian District
said that he first encountered Taiwanese comics at the festival years ago and has translated and published works by Taiwanese artists such as Chang Sheng (常勝) and Ruan Guang-min (阮光民) since 2016
“They are talented and have different stories to tell,” Sery said
citing how Taiwanese creators “see the world from a different perspective.”
Sery added that there is a growing recognition of Taiwanese comics in France
with nearly 20 French editions published in 2023
compared with just three or four a few years ago
said French audiences feel that Taiwanese comics have a “more nuanced and sophisticated” storytelling style than Japanese comics
where Japanese comics no longer dominate the industry
This shift presents an opportunity for Taiwanese comics to strengthen their position in the global market

A man has been shot and seriously injured by police after he used a jerry can to pour petrol throughout Angoulême mairie and attempted to set it alight.
Eyewitnesses say the individual entered the town hall building just after midday and went directly towards the office of the mayor’s assistants
There he began to pour petrol around the room and onto two female workers
Police officers were called and shot the attacker
who is now said to be in a critical condition in hospital
A fire broke during the incident but it is not clear whether this was started deliberately by the man before being shot
or by accident after he spilled the petrol.
It is not thought that serious damage was done to the building
Local media sources report that nobody – except the attacker – has been injured.
Caretaker Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed the attack

Power has been cut in part of the town centre close to the mairie
The attacker left his car parked outside the mairie and it is unknown if he left anything else inside either his vehicle or the building
Police have also searched the attacker’s home
The motives of the attack are not clear but in an interview posted on X
the town’s mayor Xavier Bonnefont said the 46-year-old was previously unknown to the police

the Catalan capital is the guest city invited by UNESCO at the festival
a leading global event in its sphere to be held from 30 January to 2 February
One of the globe’s most outstanding events in the world of comics is the Angoulême International Comics Festival, with Barcelona’s comic scene playing a special part this year during the event from 20 January to 2 February. The city will be the guest city in the UNESCO pavilion, along with Quebec.
The exhibition “Barcelona en vinyetes”, curated by the comic critic, editor and scriptwriter Antoni Guiral, will provide the main thread for the programme. The display offers a visual journey around some scenes in the city, such as Gaudí’s buildings and the streets of the Gòtic neighbourhood. These spots, often playing a key role, have been represented by local and international authors in genres ranging from humour to police stories, from the literary genre of costumbrismo to social comics.
The exhibition highlights Barcelona’s connection with the world of illustrated stories, underlining its condition as the cradle for comic work in the Spanish state and the centre of national and international production. Using a historical perspective, it remembers the satirical magazines of the early 20th century through to more recent works.
Besides the exhibition, Barcelona will be presenting a varied programme of activities that include debates about the influence of comics in the city, creative workshops for people of all ages and even a live drawing contest between artists from Catalonia and Quebec. The authors Jordi Lafebre, Sandra Cardona, Nadia Hafid, Marc Torices, Pep Brocal and Sara Soler will be present at the festival to share their experiences with talks and interactive activities.
Started 50 years ago, the festival offers an extensive programme of activities with the presentation of new material, exhibitions, signing by authors and other events.

A UNESCO creative city since 2015 and with strong historical links to the world of comics
Barcelona has been invited to take part in the UNESCO pavilion at FIBD25 in Angoulême
This invitation involves an ambitious programme featuring six authors from the Barcelona who represent the city’s talent and success and embody various styles and trends
Our city has been the artistic and industrial centre of the comic in the Spain from its beginnings at the end of the 19th century through to the present day
The early appearance of cartoon strips in satirical magazines such as L’Esquella de la Torratxa
as well as in popular publications like Dominguín
This long trajectory continued over the course of the 20th and 21st centuries in various formats: magazines
all of them developed through Barcelona's powerful industrial fabric
Several publications by authors who live in our city
some of them Catalan and others from other parts of Spain
are among the most influential works in our particular history
80% of all comics printed in Spain are produced in Barcelona
This production has also reached countries such as France
with the task of agencies in our city essential in coordinating and producing stories by Barcelona-based authors for the whole world
This potential has meant that some of our storytellers now work directly for influential markets such as the Franco-Belgian and North American ones
the city of Barcelona has been depicted in numerous comics
serving as the backdrop for many great stories and
almost taking on the role of a character itself
where you will find an exhibition showcasing Barcelona's presence in comics from around the world
