Anest Iwata set to race on next year under its own banner as team weighs up whether to keep Lexus RC F GT3…
Arnage Racing has announced it will no longer participate in SUPER GT under its own name following the end of its association with Anest Iwata Racing
Mie Prefecture-based Arnage has run a Lexus RC F GT3 under the ‘Anest Iwata Racing by Arnage’ banner in deference to its partnership with Anest Iwata
a Yokohama-based heavy manufacturing company
the tie-up came to an end following last weekend’s Suzuka finale
with Anest Iwata now poised to continue racing under its own banner instead
Arnage owner Munetake Ito wrote on social media: “As of the end of the 2024 season
Arnage Racing’s participation [in SUPER GT] as a team has ended
“We are very grateful to the fans that supported us
And to the many people that have helped us
I’d like to express my sincerest gratitude.”
Arnage successfully took the first step towards the second phase.”
who is the boss of the Super Licence organization that assists with running the Anest Iwata effort
confirmed to Sportscar365 that the team will continue to be on the grid next year
The team has struggled for performance with the RC F GT3
believed to be an ex-Emil Frey Racing chassis
scoring a best finish of seventh last year at Sugo with drivers Igor Fraga and Yuga Furutani
Kunii stated that continuing with the Lexus remains a strong possibility
It’s understood that Gran Turismo-backed Fraga is expected to stay with the team for a third season
but Furutani is poised to exit in favor of a new Japanese signing
Arnage has been a permanent fixture of the GT300 grid since 2013
when it first entered the championship in its own right with an Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3
Since then it has run a variety of different cars
the Ferrari 488 GT3 (in partnership with Inging)
Arnage also runs a Mercedes-AMG GT3 on behalf of R’Qs Motor Sports
and it’s unclear whether the split with Anest Iwata will have any impact on this program

Today's Nice Price or No Dice Arnage T Red Label is the last Bentley model shared with Rolls Royce
as the two former flatmates were split between VW and BMW during the model's run
It's now an old-school example of British steel
and we'll have to decide how much silver and gold it should take to own
Our communal critical eye found the Volvo's $21,500 asking not to be to our liking
a fact documented by its 56 percent No Dice loss
If a classic car is going to pull its weight around here, it's going to need to really offer something special, and boy, does this 2000 Bentley Arnage T Red Label pull its weight—all 5,700 pounds of it
The Arnage was introduced in 1998 and is notable for being the last Bentley to get a reach-around from Rolls-Royce
It's also noteworthy that during the model's development
decided to buy engines for the cars rather than build them
the company settled on a pair of modern mills from BMW—a V12 for the Rolls Silver Seraph and a V8 for the Arnage
With the development of the cars well underway
Vickers put the whole kit and caboodle up for sale
This instigated the famous hair-pulling slap-fight between German marques BMW and Volkswagen over the ownership rights of Rolls and Bentley and their brands
Not wanting to have to count on engines from a rival with which it had just gone through a very public and pretty brutal fight
VW threw a big wad of cash at an effort to wedge the ancient six-and-three-quarter-liters pushrod V8 under the Arnage's bonnet
This was a big deal since the car was designed around the smaller
the Cosworth-built single turbocharged old-school V8 makes 400 horsepower
which is 50 greater than the BMW mill could manage with its two turbos
To differentiate these Bentley-powered brutes
they all received the traditional Red Label badges
one might not initially consider this Bentley Arnage a sporting car
but those impressions can be erased by simply dipping a toe into the go pedal
That shouldn't be a problem on this 65,000-mile example
as the ad says the car has benefitted from professional service and touts that a slew of very expensive parts have been replaced
It's also claimed to have a clean title and
It will also stand out from the crowd while whisking its occupants to their intended destinations owing to its arrest-me red paint
These are not just massive cars; they also have a presence
Packing all that in means it's not as roomy inside as the exterior might give on
the center spot in the rear seat is little more than a joke that only the well-to-do can appreciate
Other issues to note: the wood trim is cracking on the console and center stack
and one of the rear side-marker lights is missing its lens
Those defects mar what is otherwise a solid presentation
would significantly impact the ownership experience
That's around 10 percent of what the car cost new
What's your take on this Arnage and that $29,999 asking
Or is that too much cash for even this much car
Los Angeles, California, Craigslist, or go here if the ad disappears

Codenamed L410 (for lightweight -- it had an aluminum block -- 4.10inch bore) the engine also featured cylinder head design heavily influenced by the legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12 aircraft engine

Their valve arrangement and wedge-shaped combustion chambers ensure better flame propagation and more efficient combustion with today's high compression ratios
And because Bentley engineers were forced to carry over the radiator from the six-cylinder S1
they made the exhaust ports very short to reduce the thermal load on the cooling system
"That means today we get very good catalytic converter light off," says Eichhorn
When launched in 1959 to power the elegant Bentley S2
the L410 displaced 6.23-liters and produced a little under 200hp and 295lb-ft of torque
with 90 percent of the aforementioned 738lb-ft available between 1800rpm and 3800rpm
Yet fuel consumption has decreased by 40 percent

but was shocked to learn he did not own the Rolls-Royce logo and Spirit of Ecstasy mascot
the aero engine manufacturing company that had been spun off from the carmaking operation by the British government in 1973
which had close ties with BMW's own aero engine business

Tough new emissions laws? Other regulations? Not a problem, says Ulrich Eichhorn, who was born two years after the L410, and jokes he'd like to see the engine celebrate its 75th birthday: "There is no legal limit in sight." A mighty heart indeed.

Except it really was all about that torque rather than the Red Label's ultimate speed. This is a car that genuinely can claim to waft with nothing but a light touch on the throttle pedal. And okay, the L-Series was never a soundless thing, but its lazy V8 background rumble was all part of the Bentley experience. Moreover, I always found these earlier Red Labels quieter than the later twin-turbo models that came along later, including the Arnage R and T.
So that was when the L Series was pulled out the cupboard, so to speak, and much of the Arnage was reengineered in the process. This included answering criticisms about the lack of space in the back. But rather than add an expensive LWB version, the solution was to lower and push back the position of the rear seats. It did the job. At the same time the body shell was stiffened up and the brakes, which struggled to deal with the extra weight and performance of the L Series, were beefed up.

Former World’s Strongest Man Eddie Hall spent $17,000 on a mystery storage container and was left gobsmacked by what was inside.
The 2017 World’s Strongest Man winner bought the container at an auction without having any idea about what was inside.
But one that certainly paid off for Hall when the contents were revealed.

Thanks to shows like Storage Wars and Storage Hunters
there are plenty of folks out there who are keen to snap up a storage unit to try and make a profit.
One such person was former strongman Eddie Hall – who also once drove to a McDonald’s drive-thru in a tank
Despite having no clue about what was inside
Hall parted with $17,000 (£14,000) to get his hands on the container.
And he wasted no time cracking it open to reveal what was inside.
In a clip shared to his YouTube channel
Hall uses a pair of bolt cutters to get into the container
it looked like he could be set up for disappointment.
as he dug further through the unit he unearthed some much more interesting treasures
including a model train collection and a toolbox full of tools
All of which Hall thinks could pull in around $3,650.
The storage unit also held a couple of safes
which Hall managed to get open with the help of his trusty tank
but hidden within the sand was a diamond ring
and it wasn’t over yet – because at the back of the container there was a car covered in a tarp
Hall whisked off the cover to reveal a 2007 Bentley Arnage – worth around $50,000.
The silver car looked to be in immaculate condition
with Hall noting ‘there’s not a scratch on it’.
the strongman reckons the contents of his container came to around $59,700 – meaning he made a profit of $42,700

That's somewhere north of $180 million of very rich folks' loose change
About one-third of Phantom owners have already traded their first for a second one
"Most of our owners have three to five homes
so why bother moving the car from one home to another?" says a Rolls-Royce spokesman with the impeccable logic only serious money can buy
The point of all this is that judging the Rolls-Royce Phantom or the Bentley Arnage R by the criteria that matter to most of us is
It's not simply that both cars occupy a huge chunk of real estate on the road and suck gas like it's going out of style--we mere wage slaves can experience all that for the price of a new Suburban
the gas-guzzler tax is $3000 on the Phantom and $5400 on the Arnage R.) Understanding what these cars are about means looking beyond the hardware to figure out exactly what all that money actually buys you
In Case You Need A 180-Mph Limo By Paul Horrell
The 2007 Arnage T charges even harder--0 to 60 mph takes just 5.2 seconds instead of 5.5, and top speed has gone from 168 to 180 mph. But the slightly crazed surge of the current car has been replaced by something more controllable--jet thrust rather than a tidal wave.
While recalibrating the engine for emissions, Crewe's engineers figured they might as well go for more power. The top Arnage T now has a nice round 500 horses, and torque rises to an even neater metric 1000Nm, or 738 pound-feet. Thank new lower-inertia turbos for the wider torque spread, a new camshaft for smoother idling, and roller tappets for reduced friction.
In mid-1998, BMW announced a #340-million offer for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Brits with long memories wallowed in the irony: In 1940, Luftwaffe bombers powered by BMW engines had done their best to flatten London and had been beaten back by Royal Air Force fighters powered by Rolls-Royce engines. Germany might've lost the Battle of Britain, but almost 50 years later it won the automotive war: Rolls-Royce and Bentley were still the crown jewels of a faded British auto industry.

Entertaining to drive and still charismatic to own, but starting to feel its age.
Not much about the 2007 Bentley Arnage T aristo-sedan makes sense
Not the fuel efficiency-just 11 mpg in the city
which checks in at a titanic 5715 pounds even before you've filled the trunk with polo mallets and cucumber sandwiches
including $2090 worth of rear-seat picnic tables and $240 worth of umbrellas but not a three-bedroom Tudor in which to park them

profligate road yacht that says "big-shot Hollywood producer" like a monogrammed bungalow
For all its attempts to stride into the 21st century - those electronic dampers, the high-performance turbos, an integrated Bluetooth telephone system - the Arnage never lets you forget it's from another era. Whether you find its peculiarities charming or irritating, they're conspicuous, impossible to ignore. A few observations from our test car's stay with us:

Last week I was raving about a delicate, lightweight Honda hybrid boasting low-drag aerodynamics and fuel saving electrical assistance
From there to a brick outhouse Bentley with a 6.75-litre turbocharged V8
real-world fuel consumption barely into double figures and CO2 output that would have your average coal fired power station looking pretty virtuous
Such is the danger of a wandering eye and time in the classifieds
Inspiration for checking out a big Bentley came from bumping into the owner of one at a filling station the other night
2.6-tonne kerbweight and aerodynamics of a stately home will do that
I just thought it looked absolutely magnificent though
Magnificent enough that such trivialities would be set aside as soon as you plonked your backside back onto the thick leather of the driver’s seat
The real old money will always prefer a Rolls of course
But if you want a car true to the more hedonistic
caddish image Bentley has always thrived on you need something like an Arnage
If you’re feeling brave you can pick one up for around £20K these days
these being from the earlier cars with the glazed in headlights and with the (all things relative) less powerful 400bhp version of the classic V8
The car underwent some significant revisions as it matured though
the 2005 model year cars getting the Continental inspired twin headlights and more power
From 2006 onwards though things took a decisive step up
the ageing four-speed automatic replaced by a more modern six-speeder
power going up to 500bhp for the T and torque rising to a monumental 737lb ft – 1,000Nm for those of a metric persuasion
If I was going to do it I’d have to have one of these later cars
if only for that crushing performance and the more modern running gear
which is admittedly some way beyond tempting impulse purchase
And demanding of some fairly sturdy denial about matters fiscal
maintaining it or budgeting for depreciation
Like you should be concerned about such things if you’re buying a Bentley
It’s only skin deep though. If I ever take the plunge and you see me filling it up (again) at your local petrol station, by all means, pop over and say hello!
but what else is out there if you want something comfortable
memory seats and around plenty of tech that’s still relevant today
What an investment to kick off this week’s roundup with
A more relaxed option than the Bimmer, and a considerably rarer one at that. This is a Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit Limousine
with the ad stating that just 16 of these were made back in 1982
A browse over the picture gallery also confirms that this is a far superior hen-do option to the now-rinsed Humvee
so there could even be a business proposal on the cards here
which is incredibly hard to find for under £20k - nor does it have any obvious mechanical errors
The untrained eye would actually find it difficult to tell this RS6 has such a fiery power plant beneath that long bonnet; it looks restrained and it isn’t even a screamer
But that’s exactly what you want in a continent-blasting luxo-barge
And don’t forget: the power’s still there when you need it
Kicking on into the latter half of this list, which is mostly populated with sleek, sportier metal, here’s a TVR Chimaera finished in a truly stunning shade of crimson
The interior’s ruby and magnolia-themed upholstery complements the exterior like salt does pepper
Or you can have this Maser GT
Grey isn’t the most adventurous colour in the world
but it’s worn rather well here given that there are several different shades of it applied across
People will also hear you coming from about 2,000 miles away
such is the ferocity of its naturally aspirated engine note
One of the few V12s (that sounds like a V12) you can nab yourself for this price bracket. Since this DB7 is in full-bore Vantage spec
it also comes with a five-second sprint to 62
a top speed of 184 and those circular fog lights that make 83 per cent of the world’s population weak at the knees
Reckon you can get the price down a few grand with a bit of sweet talk
Every time a new Bentley comes along
many are quick to render said luxury vehicle as an elegant long-roof shooting brake
very few creations like these actually exist in the metal

the 2003 Bentley Arnage has just 24,233 miles (39,000 km) on its odometer
The car left the factory as a regular Arnage
after which it was bought by an Italian industrial heir with a specific goal in mind
he supposedly wanted something with enough storage space to carry luggage between his residences in Monaco and Switzerland that also had the facilities to suitably traverse the latter property’s rough terrain

they also adorned the sides and rear of the body with wood paneling for good measure

there were also functional additions such as a double sunroof and folding rear seats

Rounding off the specs of this bizarre Arnage is the tame fact that its engine remains unmodified
makes potent 450 hp (456 PS / 336 kW) and 645 lb-ft (875 Nm) of torque
which is now sent to all four wheels by way of a smooth-shifting automatic transmission
the whole job ended up costing around $900,000 (€908,869)
so at the price this car’s being offered
it’s somewhat of a bargain even if you were to factor out the exclusivity of it

With too few exceptions (the Continental coupe and a long line of Turbo models)
Bentley has been little more than a grille apart from a Rolls-Royce ever since; purists still call the pre-'32 cars "W.Os." The irony will be lost on no one that the company that saved Bentley from Rolls also now owns Bugatti
And the marque extends this sporting attitude to customers with the stunning new 200-mph Continental GT
the most beautiful coupe from anyone in years
The first-year allocation of 1500 is sold out
we've at least listened to the engine's distinctive low-key rumble
twin-turbo W-12-powered all-wheel-drive coupe is the kind of car befitting a Dunhill-suited James Bond

Bentley won't live on a single model: Everything but the Flying Lady hood ornament went to VW in the convoluted sale of the U.K
So the Arnage design and its Crewe factory remain with VW
We expected the big sedan to be trucky and antiquated
But the Arnage R doesn't feel old so much as it feels like a mature-driver's car
Its stiffened body structure and tweaked mechanical bits allowed Bentley's suspension tuners to combine a supple ride with solid cornering power
While it's no lightweight sport sedan
body control and handling make it particularly agile for a 5700-pound machine
with good on-center feel--you won't be tempted to turn this one over to the chauffeur
The R's twin-turbo 6.75-liter/400-horsepower V-8 has more torque than an overwrought metaphor (616 lb-ft!)

Back24 Hours of Le Mans - A new spectator area at Arnage!24 Hours of Le Mans fans who choose to watch the race at Arnage will be able to enjoy a whole new view
Work has been done to improve visibility for spectators and to welcome campers
The Arnage is the first truly new Bentley in 18 years. Its predecessors, the Brooklands R and Turbo RT, relied on a GM-derived V-8 whose origins go back much further than that (the current two-door Continental coupe remains in production). As Rolls Chief Executive Graham Morris candidly confesses, "We've not improved our standards as fast as we would have liked, but with our new products and new facilities, we have a fighting chance of re-establishing ourselves."
The Arnage's new fully galvanized monocoque steel bodyshell is 65 percent stiffer than before; the independent wishbone front and rear suspension (with automatically adaptive electro-hydraulic dampers) is better controlled; the rack-and-pinion steering is now directly mounted to the front subframe and perceptibly more rigid; and the old ship-at-sea corkscrew motion over bumps is gone.
Complementing the inherent integrity of the new chassis are bigger, stronger brakes, a smoother-shifting five-speed automatic transmission, even a newfangled device called Automatic Stability Control. It's significant that this traction-maxxing device-also BMW-supplied-can be switched on or off from the cockpit: Unlikely though it may seem at first appearance, the Bentley Arnage really is a driver's car.

BackThe "virage d'Arnage": a mythical placeThe 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit and its 13,629 km include countless legendary places
Among the names that resonate since the creation of the race in 1923
Bentley has long been near the pinnacle of luxury and performance, with pricing that also befits that position. Today's Nice Price or No Dice Arnage is cheaper than a Camry but is it cheap enough to bring the power to the people
So I just finished watching Mare of Easttown over on the HBO
Overall I was enraptured by the story and more so by Kate Winslet's gritty performance
that took me out of the moment during a few of the show's seven episodes
That was the choice to have the Dylan Hinchey character — a teenager living in a lower-middle-class town — roll around in a restored first-generation Ford Bronco
Either the producers don't know what such a whip would cost
or they were trying to make some inscrutable plot point by the seemingly out-of-character choice
We may never know the rationale behind the Bronco, but I think Dylan's character would have been much more believable if he had driven instead, a truck like yesterday's 1946 Willys-Overland CJ2A
yesterday's Jeep was also at the high end of a teen driver's likely price range
Many of you felt it was out of your range too — at least for the truck as it was presented — and dunned it with a 74 percent No Dice loss
Now, when you're a teenager, what you really want as a car that stands out and makes a statement. That makes today's 2001 Bentley Arnage Red Label such a good choice for a high-school-age driver's ride
you roll up to class in this silver over luscious red and grey super sedan people will finally stop talking about that time you sharted yourself in third grade
you'd finally shed that shart kid moniker and would henceforth be known as either Bentley Boy or Arnage Girl
Most teenagers have probably never even seen whitewall tires either so this Bentley's meats — which appear to be Vogue White/Gold Custom Built radials — should have them flocking to the car for wheel selfies and Rim-stagrams
With just a mere 24,839 miles showing on the odometer in the dash pic
it probably has a good bit of life left in it for whoever might like a fancy ride to go to Walmart
the car looks to have little evidence of even those few miles
The bodywork appears to be without flaw and is as upright and stately as a Tudor castle
The engine bay is likewise clean and shows no sign of absent maintenance or amateur wrenching
that under-hood area is taken up by Rolls Royce's own 6.75-liter pushrod V8
That's what parent VW fitted rather than the smaller 4.4-liter M62 from BMW that was used in the 2000 model year "Green Label." The big V8 is helped along by a pair of turbos and does its thing through a ZF five-speed automatic
That transmission is shifted via a lever set in the console topped with lovely burlwood and lots of buttons
Wrapped around that is more leather and wood
The only slightly off-putting element in the cabin is the choice of light gray leather for the dash cap and steering wheel
Acres of room abound in both front and back
all complemented by a boot that can swallow multiple golf bags at a time
The ad claims the car "[R]uns like a dream," backing that up by saying that it has only been "driven on weekends and summer nights." Ooh
summer nights tooling around in a big-ass Bentley sounds utterly decadent
The title is clear and the seller asks for either the trade for a '60s — '70s American muscle car
or $21,000 in cash should you presently be fresh out of those
What's your take on this Bentley and that $21,000 price
Does that seem like a fair deal for this luxurious sedan as it's presented in the ad
does that still feel too high for even so high-flying a ride

It was quite a statement of intent from Bentley and its VW parent company when
the Arnage T arrived as the most powerful four-door production saloon in the world
a saloon with 450hp and 645lb ft of torque is not unusual
but more than a decade ago it set tongues wagging and set the Arnage T apart from its lesser sibling and
Arnage a pleasing intersection of classic and modern
emerged from the bickering between BMW and VW as they scrapped over the sale of Bentley and Rolls-Royce
BMW had been supplying the engines for the Arnage at launch in 1998 and a V12 motor for the Rolls Seraph
when Volkswagen assumed ownership of Bentley
there was no way it would countenance an engine from an arch rival
With no other motor in its stable to replace the 4.4-litre BMW turbo V8
VW hastily revived the classic 6.75-litre V8 that has been in use in Rolls and Bentley models since the last 1950s
Cosworth was tasked with bringing the engine up to date with twin Garrett T3 turbochargers. This boosted power to 400hp to begin with for the Arnage Red Label, which later became the R, and helped the car meet current emissions regulations. More boost took power to 450hp in 2002 for the launch of the Arnage T
which could see off 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds and head on to 168mph
Various improvements and twin lights for post-05
A facelift followed in 2004 for the 2005 model year with the engine developed to meet Euro4 emissions standards
It also brought a revised dash for better ergonomics
minor dash controls hidden behind wooden panels
and revised rear suspension for a smoother ride
19-inch alloy wheels became standard for the T
The year 2004 also saw the introduction of the T-24 to celebrate Bentley's six wins at Le Mans
The T-24 has carbon fibre in place of much of the Arnage's usual chrome trim
subtle Union Jack flags and louvres behind the front wheelarches
with a few more made for the UK and Europe
Bentley went on to revise the Arnage T once more in 2006 for the 2007 model year
Power of the V8 engine went up to 500hp thanks to new low-inertia Mitsubishi turbochargers
while a new six-speed ZF automatic gearbox replaced the old four-speed GM unit to cope with torque of 737lb ft and deliver smoother shifts
Bosch ESP 5.7 traction and stability control was also made standard
all of this helped top speed rise to 179mph and 0-62mph drop to 5.5 seconds
While the R is all but mechanically identical to the T
the Arnage T is generally the more sought after
All of the advice in this guide applies to the R
which now costs from around £28,000 for sound cars all the way to £80,000 for the very best of the run-out Final Series models
a inspection by an acknowledged expert is essential and many offer this service for free
PHer's view:"In terms of the driving experience the car is brilliant
It will cruise all day at 90mph and return 17mpg
particularly with the amount of torque available at low to medium speed
I think I am quite a quick driver but I have yet to put it into sport
We took it down through France and the Alps this year and it behaved impeccably and with huge style."Paul Marshall

Maybe it's the size, or the shape - that simple, boxy profile with a bonnet, a cabin and a boot - but whatever it is, the Arnage has got presence. Oodles of it. If villains really did turn up in trilbies and long black coats with fat cigars in their mouths and violin cases under their arms, then they would arrive in this car.
In black, the Bentley Arnage blows away any pretence of poshness and posturing in favour of a menacing presence easily the equal of an Apache gunship or a monster in the wardrobe. That it swooshes up with a sinister burble from the 6751cc V8 only adds to the effect.
This feature was originally published in the August 2011 issue of Top Gear magazine
The Rolls-Royce version of the Arnage was the Silver Seraph, a car so laden down with golf-club pretentiousness and scrap-dealer brashness that it's a surprise it could move. The Arnage though, feels like a last roar for the proper, old-school, big Bentley. It's a car a rascal would drive, a cad. It comes with a moustache, even if you can't see it. A big one.
Stepping in is, as one would hope in a car costing the best part of two hundred grand when new, a bit of an event. The width of the sill, the quality of the aluminium tread plate and the deep, luscious carpet beyond make you feel like you're crossing a threshold to enter a room rather than a mere motorcar.
Settling into the quilted seats, surveying the dashboard, bristling with chromed switches and instruments. Soaking up the silence as deep as the carpet inside this cocoon of luxury shielded from the outside world, you feel like you really have crossed into a different place.
It doesn't have the magnificent ‘Power Reserve' dial in place of a rev counter, like the modern Rolls-Royce Phantom, but the fuel gauge does at least say ‘Empty' and ‘Full', properly spelled out in English. And only by really standing on the throttle is there any aural indication that the big V8 gives 450bhp, enough to take this 2.5-tonne statement to 60mph in just 5.8 seconds.
But it's not a big dumb beast; the suspension uses adaptive electro-hydraulic technology, but uses it more, I suspect, to control body roll through corners to keep driver and passengers comfortable than for chasing a Lotus Elise. And it's so very quiet. Under load the engine coughs discreetly and pipes up with a gentle, but purposeful growl. And you're glad that it does.
It is knocking on a bit now, the Arnage. The first ones arrived 13 years ago, and it shows in a few places. The centre console feels dated, the buttons to operate the electric seat and, in this one anyway, the mobile phone all feel slightly too proud of themselves for being there.
But these features will age well. Give this car another five years, and they'll feel classic, not dated. It's still an expensive thing; you can pay well over a hundred grand. And it won't have finished depreciating; you could lie in your bed and listen to the whistling noise of your car in the garage losing money overnight.
Cheaper ones are out there. Anything from twenty grand upwards. But you'd want to be very, very sure indeed that it was a good one, because running the thing ain't gonna be cheap. In the same way that repairing a jet fighter isn't cheap.
But those are all dreary administrative issues. Above all else, at every point in every journey, it's all happening whilst you're inside a proper, big Bentley. I would never, ever tire of getting out of this car, hitting the lock button and walking away, not from a car, but from a Bentley.
I would never tire of ringing people up and saying: "Yup, meet you there. What'll I be in? Oh, a Bentley. A black one." Some things are just cool. This Bentley Arnage is one of them.
You read that right. Final. Lest Bentley pull a trick akin to an Eagles "farewell" tour, the 2009 Bentley Arnage Final Series will celebrate the end for the stately Arnage.
After ten years as Bentley's luxury flagship, the folks in Crewe decided to give it a proper send off. As the PR folks put it, the Final Series aims to combine the power of the Arnage T and the refinement of the Arnage R - and from a quick glance over the spec sheet, it seems they've done just that.
Culminating with the 50th anniversary of Bentley's first V-8, the Arnage Final Series makes do with a twin-turbocharged 6.8-liter V-8 borrowed from the T. Bentley rates the force-fed monster at 500 hp at 4200 rpm, and 738 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm. A six-speed automatic transmission, sourced from ZF, channels that power to the Arnage's rear wheels, allowing it to reach 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 179 mph.
Though the mechanicals are all about power, the Final Series' appearance emphasizes luxury. Most visible changes, both inside and out, are cosmetic, helping to emphasize the Arnage's lineage while enhancing its (already opulent) creature comforts.
If you wondered where all the chrome went, look no further than the interior. Apart from the typical chromed switchgear, the Final Series adds chrome to the door sills, speaker grilles, and inlays the material within the Arnage's wood trim. Also chromed is a limited-edition flask, which - along with two shot glasses - store neatly in a seatback compartment.
Customers can choose one of twenty-five colors for their leather, which adorns everything from the headliner to the seats themselves. For the Final Series, Bentley adds custom contrast stitching to the seats, including a hand-embroidered Bentley emblem on each seatback.
The niceties continue with four custom-designed umbrellas, two wooden seat back tables, and a surprisingly advanced audio system. The Arnage Final Series eschews the CD medium for a receiver that, instead, reads digital files from an SD card. An iPod interface is also included, but perhaps most important is the 1000-watt amplifier and speaker set designed by Naim, a renowned British stereo manufacturer.
If these bells and whistles tickle your fancy or you'd simply like to cash in on the cachet of the "last Arnage," you'd better move fast. We wouldn't call the mostly hand-built Arnage a high-volume car by any means, but production of the Final Series is further limited to 150 cars. After which - well, Bentley won't say what will follow, but we'd expect yet another rear-drive flagship. Just don't call it Arnage.
