said it has strengthened its financial position with $4.0 million raised from warrant exercises
the company announced that it had elected to exercise its right under certain common share purchase warrants issued on June 6
to accelerate the expiry date of the warrants
It said all 10.1 million warrants have been exercised by the holders
a move that has brought in gross proceeds of $4.05 million
Arras shares eased 1.06% or $0.01 to 93 cents
The shares trade in a 52-week range of $1.00 and 20 cents
Arras is advancing a portfolio of copper and gold assets in northeastern Kazakhstan
the company entered into a strategic alliance agreement with Teck that is focusing on exploration for critical minerals
The strategic alliance with Vancouver-based Teck
does not include the Beskauga copper-gold project
Arras said it has an option to purchase agreement in place on the Beskauga project with CopperBelt AG
a private mineral exploration company registered in Zug
As an early mover in Kazakhstan following the substantial reforms to the business environment and mining law, Arras has assembled the third largest land package in the country next to Rio Tinto Group [RIO-NYSE] and Fortescue and is specifically focused on copper in the highly prospective Bozshakol-Chingiz magmatic arc
Its portfolio includes the Elemes copper-gold porphyry project
which consists of two exploration licenses and covers 531.2 square kilometres
Copper mineralization was discovered there by the Soviets in the 1950s
Teck pledged to fund generative exploration work with initial expenditures of US$5 million before December 31
Following the initial generative exploration phase
Teck has the option to select up to four designated properties
covering 120 square kilometres each where Teck will fund exploration expenses of up to US$47.5 million per project enabling the major to earn up to a 75% stake in each project
“We wish to thank shareholders for their continued support through the full exercise of warrants,’’ said Arras CEO Tim Barry
“We are currently finalizing geophysical survey and drilling contracts and expect to commence fieldwork later in April,’’ he said
“The company is well positioned to kick off its phase 2 program at Elemes and
together with the work program planned on the Arras-Teck strategic alliance
we are very excited about the many targets we will be advancing over the next eight to 12 months in Kazakhstan.’’

The 2025 international conference on the f-word (24-26 September 2025) is now open for submissions
It aims at exploring the manifold nature and uses of ‘fuck’—‘the most important and powerful word in the English language’ (Sheidlower 2009)—from the viewpoints of linguistics
‘fuck’ is itself polymorphous: while as an autonomous lexeme it may be a noun
a verb or an interjection (Oxford English Dictionary 2024; Green’s Dictionary of Slang)
syntactic and phonological traits with a variety of other linguistic objects (such as affixes or clitics) used in constructions equally challenging for analytical frameworks
where the freedom imparted by expressivity (in the sense developed by Guillaume 1991) takes over conventional morphosyntax
This slipperiness lends the ‘f-word’ a plasticity which in turn invites reflection along sociolinguistic and pragmatic lines: as a salient contributor to the triad of taboo topics (religion
‘fuck’ bears the status of a totemic item whose symbolism simultaneously borrows from and extends beyond its literal meaning
into flexible instruments of identification
Beyond its transgressive role in social interactions
‘fuck’ may then aptly serve as a pragmatic lens exposing how relational work is structured along the lines of various power dynamics: the committee encourages proposals exploring how these questions may indeed prolong or depart from the classical perspective of ‘facework’ (Goffman 1955) and politeness theory (Brown and Levinson 1987) in general
The conference will also welcome studies of the concrete translation challenges that the f-word poses in relation to other languages: its nimbleness and close relationship with orality indeed often lead to compensation
or even to partial or non-translations in localization
Such choices when translating profanity combine or collide with many others which affect characterization and tone in the context of fiction for example
This also serves as a reminder that translation practices remain medium-dependent
as in the way the written form of subtitles trigger different reactions to on-screen profanity compared with dubbing for example (Rollo 2017)
From the more global perspective of cultural transfer
taboos and ‘bad language’ also testify to the socially and politically charged process that translation is
prompting reflection on matters of positionality
All those points of interest coalesce in the intense emotional and transgressive
sometimes playful dimension that ‘fuck’ retains in artistic and cultural expression in the Anglosphere
notably as part of a form of ‘them-and-us’ polarising rhetoric
it is a weapon of choice for anti-establishment aesthetic practices—a ‘four-letter assault on authority’ (McEnery 2004)
whether in music (punk and rap in particular)
but also on social media where it naturally flourishes (Morris 2022)
As a metonymy of obscenity and transgression
the f-word could be seen as a barometer of how cultural scenarios of marginality
revolt and censorship reformulate themselves throughout the ages and the arts
and on which we invite discussion – whether it directs our attention to certain processes of self-marginalisation within reclaim practices for example
or to a society’s own relation to a puritanism which may obscure certain social realities in return
We welcome proposals drawing on a variety of methods and corpora to tackle the following

everyone wondered what would become of Australia’s best sparkling wine house and its longtime and pioneering cellarmaster Ed Carr – the person who proved that Tasmania could make world class sparkling wine
House of Arras head winemaker Ed Carr: Arras is Australia's most decorated sparkling wine with over 370 gold trophies won in 30 years
with the knock-on effects felt in Arras's domestic and international markets
had been bought by the American private equity firm Carlyle Group in 2018 for one billion Australian dollars
it was taken over by another private-equity-led consortium that is now about to buy Pernod Ricard’s wine brands – and the corporate churn continues merrily
To make itself more attractive to potential buyers in the course of 2023
like premium Yarra Valley and McLaren Vale vineyards
boutique wineries like Stonier in the Mornington Peninsula and even Accolade’s giant UK bottling facility in Bristol
all to service and reduce its debts – and Arras was also part of that
In October 2023, Arras was then bought by Handpicked Wines
a premium brand portfolio owned by Sino-Australian businessman William Dong
When Carr and his wife learned of the planned sale of Arras by Accolade
he confesses they were only worried for about 30 seconds before thinking “Well
“I don't want to be too negative,” says the ever softly-spoken Carr
but the brand presence sort of faded just because the investment wasn't there
People weren’t getting stock… but now there is a lot to
and we can feel that the trade attitude has changed.”
Carr is particularly relieved that Arras was bought lock
stock and barrel: “We own all of the wine assets
we own barrels and reserve wines and all tirage stock
the vineyards and the winery [in Pipers River],” Carr reports
adding that “all of the growers basically have come on board with re-signed supply contracts
And now we're in the process of building
Tasmania has just 2,084 hectares of vines and just over 40% of this fruit goes into sparkling wine production – not only for Arras but also for producers like Jansz
“There's so much planting happening in Tasmania now and we we're trying to be part of that,” Carr says about his efforts to ensure more fruit supplies
the current annual production volume of 250,000 bottles of traditional method will be slow and hard to scale
Carr is on tour to show that Arras is back
telling the world that Arras is there: “That's basically employing sales teams
The focus is moving towards premium retail and on-premise and export markets,” Carr says about dedicated staff in both the UK and the US
Then there is “re-starting with people in Japan and Hong Kong and that’s going to take a while.”
“I've got no concerns about production-wise and maintaining standards
William (Dong) has already said ‘no compromise.’” Carr notes about his new boss
but he realises that's a long-term game
the last year has been a lot of taking the wine to market again.”
Tasmanian fruit is finite and fine fizz takes time
“I think our volume will be restricted by availability of supply rather than anything else at the moment,” Carr says realistically
should suit the premium positioning of Handpicked Wines which operates “urban cellar doors” in both Melbourne and Sydney
“William’s idea is that we move forward at the top end of the range,” says Carr
While William Dong is “keen to expand,” says Carr
“It’s a minimum of four years and maybe even ten,” he says about the long lees ageing of the Arras wines
“But there is the support and the drive to actually do it.”
Carr says that there are no plans to extend fruit sourcing beyond Tasmania
but emphasises again that any growth will be slow
simply because sparkling wine requires more investment and ties up capital for longer
the primary fermentation part and the secondary fermentation part
I believe they will take multiple years to sort out.” For now
a lot of spaces re-contracted and the arrangements work well
“It's going to take us a long time to actually build a winery
we've got to do all of that financial analysis.”
Carr says that there will be a “commemorative wine” to celebrate 30 vintages at Arras
He reveals that he is thinking more about “larger formats” and that there is a magnum range coming out which is still two years away
but he is shy about “maybe another label or two
but we're conscious that we don't want just label after label after label
Sometimes revelations happen…,” he says about his modus operandi and adds: “We've got the flexibility to hold back lines
then we'll put some aside and we can go back to that later
this year will also be the 30th anniversary of Arras’ first release in 1995 and Carr says that there will be a “commemorative wine” that he is looking forward to
what we've learned about Tasmanian wines is how well they age.” He adds about his library
stocks that “we want to release them right and be planning much further in the future
What are we going to do for the 35th and the 40th
It is that sort of thinking I think which will come much more into play.”
It is wonderful to know that this precious stock has been saved and safeguarded
that Carr can continue his mission and that this outstanding brand has been rescued and given a new lease of life
I have a feeling we will be seeing far more of Carr in the future

vanished in Yosemite National Park while on a horseback trip with her father in 1981 and has remained missing for over four decades
Stacey Anne Arras was just 14-years-old when she and her father
began a four-day excursion on the High Sierra Loop at Tuolumne Meadows on July 17
She and George were part of a 10-person group and rode mules to the Sunrise High Sierra Camp
and the plan was to spend a night at the camp’s cabins before continuing along the High Sierra Camp loop
Stacey and her father were supposed to share a cabin that night
at which point she decided to take a shower and change her clothes
Stacey told her father that she wanted to walk down a trail with Gerald Stuard
George told his daughter to wear more appropriate shoes
so she put on hiking boots before leaving with Gerald for their 1.5-mile hike along the trail to Sunrise Lakes
Gerald reportedly became tired at one point during the hike and took a seat to rest
Stacey supposedly told him that she was heading toward the lake and would return in a few minutes
a tour guide who’d led the group Sunrise High Sierra Camp had been nearby at the time
and reportedly saw Stacey standing on a rock approximately 50 yards south of the trail
The guide became the last person to see Stacey alive
and the National Park Service immediately began investigating her disappearance
involving hundreds of people and helicopters
but aside from Stacey’s camera lens being found on the trail

Stacey’s strange case has prompted numerous theories
Bear attacks are extremely rare in Yosemite National Park
and executing an abduction would be difficult
the Sunrise Lakes are over four miles away from the road and close to visitor hot spots
It’s possible that Stacey became lost in the dark and fell
exactly what happened to her has remained a mystery for over 43 years
She was last seen wearing shorts with maroon
a white short-sleeve blouse with lace trim
Anyone with information regarding her case is urged to contact the National Park Service at (209) 379-1992

Arras is pleased to provide an update on the ongoing exploration program across 1,736 square kilometers ("sq km") of licenses that form the Arras-Teck Resources Limited ("Teck") Strategic Alliance
A core drill is expected to arrive next week at the Akkuduk license to begin testing the Besshoky Target
This target has already been refined through a geophysics program last year and is located within a >20 sq km lithocap
The initial drilling has been designed to target the potential core of a porphyry Cu-Au system represented by a magnetic high
thought to be associated with an underlying intrusive related to a porphyry system
Additional drilling will be targeting coincident Au-Mo-Te-Se-As-Sb geochemical anomalies and high chargeable zones defined in the 2024 geochemical and geophysical programs
Arras-Teck Strategic Alliance exploration targets - Besshoky Target
showing Induced Polarization chargeability anomalies and soil geochemistry anomalies
A Ground Induced Polarization ("IP") survey has commenced over high-priority areas defined in 2024 and has been designed to further refine targets for drilling over the coming months
Geophysical data defined a large annular chargeability anomaly with coincident magnetic resistivity lows
top of bedrock sampling) returned a multi-element Cu-Au-Mo-Bi-Te-Ag geochem anomaly
The Batpaq prospect is defined by a discrete magnetic and resistivity lows
with a coincident KGK Cu geochemical anomaly
KGK drilling defined a coincident As-Tl-Mo anomaly
thought to be associated with phyllic alteration in a porphyry system
mapping identified disseminated Cu-oxides and pyrite in a historical open pit and trenches
that lies at the core of a 5km+ wide chargeability anomaly in Soviet-era data
2024 exploration defined a coincident magnetic low
with a Cu-As-Pb-Mo geochemical anomaly and Mn-Zn depletion zone (3x3km)
suggesting a shallowly buried porphyry system
the 2024 soil sampling program defined a subtle Cu-Mo anomalism in soil data
that is proximal to a deep magnetic source
The EM data also defined a deep E-W EM conductor and with a broad K signature in radiometrics
we expect the drilling contractor to re-locate to begin testing the refined high-priority targets across the Bozshakol group of licenses

When winemaker Ed Carr visited Tasmania in 1988
the island had fewer than 50 hectares of vineyards
Although still one of Australia’s smaller wine regions
with producers capitalising on its potential for cool climate varieties and traditional method sparkling wines
and Carr has been one of its strongest advocates
The first cuvées of Tasmanian sparkling wines emerged in the 1980s
so Carr had already seen the island’s potential in 1988
during his work at BRL Hardy Ltd (later renamed Accolade Wines) he secured some Tasmanian grapes to work with
House of Arras was founded with Carr as its winemaker
House of Arras has become Australia’s most-awarded sparkling wine producer
House of Arras achieved a Master medal among its first-ever entries to the Global Sparkling Masters
the brand began a new chapter in its story
House of Arras was acquired by Handpicked Wines
a company focusing on boutique production from Australia’s premier vineyards and regions
Carr spoke with db to explain how the acquisition is developing the business and what the future holds as House of Arras enters more markets
opening up new business opportunities and allowing the company to pivot its strategy
it is built on respect for each business and a shared recognition of the House of Arras’ core identity
“It’s a family-owned company with William Dong as the owner
The match has been built on an alignment of values between the partners
the core team has remained in place to navigate any transition
With Carr believing that it takes at least three years to understand the journey from vineyard to glass
human capital is central to House of Arras’ success
As Carr explains: “it is essential that they are fully immersed in the critical steps that ultimately build the wine style we are known and celebrated for.”
Yet the acquisition balances mutual respect with challenge
“but William made the comment before the purchase that he doesn’t want to compromise on anything in terms of quality
but he understands that this is a long game.”
That potential to increase volume benefits immensely from Carr’s intimate knowledge of Tasmania
Already working with sites all over the island
he can scope out those which will build volume without compromise
He describes it as a process of “continually assessing existing vineyards and seeking potential new plantings that will support growth and the long-term vision of House of Arras.” Those vineyards will mostly be in the areas that are tried and tested for the basis of sparkling wine production
further opportunities both to explore and to build resilience in the company’s plantings
According to Carr: “We also plan to push the boundaries into cooler vineyard sites (to hedge against global warming) and other new areas where the impact of the terroir is yet to be proven.”
the acquisition by Handpicked Wines allows House of Arras to target new consumers and new markets
With the advantage of longer ageing – after all
the team already knows how much wine is available to sell in four years’ time – there is scope for an expanded market presence
International markets will be a particular focus as the brand’s profile continues to grow
European countries (including France and Italy)
and China as promising prospects for the House of Arras
The company will also seek to build its premium presence
This will be aided by an expanded programme of large format and museum releases
As it prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2025
there are already plans to sell a specially labelled back vintage
many of Carr’s aspirations for the brand’s reach indicate broader ideas about the sparkling wine market
His hope is quite simple: “I just want people to choose by the style and the quality.”
Carr has slowly had to build Tasmania’s reputation
“It’s been an issue in the past,” he comments
if you’re paying above a certain price point
he finds the ever-present comparisons to Champagne irksome
part of his reasoning for entering wine shows and competitions
an unhealthy fixation on who might be ‘best’
such awards can bring the wines to the attention of more consumers
Carr’s approach is somewhere between quiet confidence and contented neutrality
“What’s always been the aim with Arras wines,” he explains
House of Arras secured five Gold medals and one Master medal at the Global Sparkling Masters 2023
made in a reductive style with Marmite-y notes from long lees contact
with fine pastry dough subtleties and a tangy saline finish
and would benefit from another five years’ ageing
Blending all three classic Champagne grapes
this outstanding traditional method fizz mimics the famous French sparkling wine region
benefiting from the cool climate of the island and the skill of Arras winemaker Ed Carr
While there are notes of juicy lemon and ripe pear
as well as notes of fresh pastry and a touch of cream
but not too firm – helped by the fine nature of the bubbles
refreshing-but-ripe style of sparkling wine
A surprising and fine sparkling wine from the House of Arras
this 2008 vintage expression is late-disgorged
and has the hallmarks of a fizz much younger than its 16-year-old state would have you expect
That means there’s plenty of lemony freshness
mixed with notes of bitter grapefruit and chalk dust
along with lees-aged characters of hazelnut and baked bread
this is a mouth-filling and refreshing find from Tasmania

Cortland helps lead way in SUNY-wide local news initiative
SUNY Cortland’s Community News project has joined the first statewide program in the United States aiming to address news deserts and struggling local news outlets with college student-produced content.
SUNY Chancellor John B. King last week named Cortland as one of 12 SUNY campuses participating in the launch of the SUNY Institute for Local News (ILN)
which provide students with educational opportunities to report on their communities and contribute to the local news landscape.
King announced the creation of up to 20 summer reporting internships
which will pair student journalists with their hometown news outlets.
“It’s an opportunity for students to get potentially paid summer internships doing local news work,” said Paul Arras, assistant professor in SUNY Cortland’s Communication and Media Studies Department
“There’s also potential for students to take an active role in this larger local news network as editors and help to organize the media platform that been building.”
The ILN, in partnership with the national Center for Community News
supports academic and news partnerships that allow students to provide content
to local media outlets to give them the experience they need to succeed as journalists
“This is an opportunity to expand their civic awareness,” Arras said
“To actually go and talk to people face-to-face that are not the usual people that they’re interacting with on a daily basis
And I think that’s a deeper mission that a lot of different classes do in different ways at Cortland
It’s an important mission of the university to teach broader civic awareness.”
New York state lost 40% of its operating newspapers and saw a 63% decrease in newspaper circulation
with more than 95% of all New Yorkers living within 30 miles of one of its 64 colleges and universities
allows it to effectively reach audiences that have had other sources of news close.
Students in university-led student reporting programs provided more than 12,000 published local news stories to struggling media enterprises around the country last year
according to the Center for Community News.
"We’re one of the best democracies in the world
and strong local news has been joined at our democracy’s hip since the start,” said Todd Franko
“That historic strength is gone due to the digital economy expansion in the last 20 years
Universities have always been immense sources of community drive and service though students and faculty.”
Arras is teaching a class this semester where students are tasked with interviewing local citizens off campus about the election and other general issues
Helping Cortland’s efforts is its campus radio station WSUC — currently managed by Professor Caroline Kaltefleiter of the Communication and Media Studies Department — which already has a long history of local coverage.
The station has made a series of broadcasts and podcasts in the lead up to Election Day on Nov
30 that brought a panel of student journalists together with Kaltefleiter to talk about the issues they found in their reporting that were most pressing to the 18-to-24-year-old demographic.
“It was really interesting to be a part of the special broadcast as it can be a bit hard and awkward to talk to fellow students about serious and sometimes uncomfortable topics
especially during an election year,” said junior Mickey Corey
“It was nice to have a space to have those conversations judgement-free and talk about some of the issues that are important to me and many others.”
WSUC will also follow up with a post-election broadcast with an in-studio audience at 3 p.m
“We are seeing the media landscape transform at an accelerated rate,” said Kaltefleiter
“Our work with the Center for Community News continues to engage students in discussions of issues affecting our local community and links those issues to statewide and nationwide discussion platforms.”
SUNY Cortland hosted the first Upstate New York faculty training meeting for the Center for Community news
a nonprofit group based at the University of Vermont started by Cortland alum Richard Watts ’85
Watts is also serving as the interim coordinator for the ILN.
Both Arras and Kaltefleiter have been named as faculty champions in Watts’ program for going above and beyond in the support of local news
Each award comes with an additional $1,000 to support their work.
Part of the funding for the ILN comes from the Lumina Foundation, a private group focused on higher education, which committed $150,000 to help the Institute’s efforts. That support is itself part of Press Forward
a national movement with a goal to strengthen communities by reinvigorating local news.
SUNY has committed an additional $160,000 over the next two years toward up to 20 summer reporting internships
which will pair student journalists with their hometown news outlets.
As part of that effort, Arras will bring Todd McAdam, managing editor at the local Cortland Standard newspaper to campus in the spring
The paper is among the oldest family-owned news organizations in the country.
“There’s good potential for this sort of partnership
and he’s interested in working closely with the students as they develop their writing and reporting,” Arras said
“Even sitting down with them and giving them the full editorial process beyond what or in addition to what we’re doing in the classroom.”
The goal by the end of next semester is to get students to produce work published in the newspaper.
“We’re excited about the Cortland Standard’s collaboration with SUNY Cortland students,” said Evan Geibel
“They’re members of this community
and I look forward to bringing their perspectives to our readers.”

(TSXV:ARK) (OTCQB:ARRKF) ("Arras" or "Arras Minerals" or "the Company") is pleased to provide initial results for the first 3 drillholes from the initial drill program on its Elemes project in Northeast Kazakhstan
All three holes were drilled at the Bereszki Central target and all holes intersected porphyry-style copper-gold mineralization starting from the surface
The Berezski Central target is located on the south part of the >8km long soil copper
arsenic anomaly centered on a zone of extensive intermediate argillic alteration hosted in altered diorites and andesites
The Elemes project is located in the Bozshakol-Chingiz Magmatic arc and is 61 kilometres Southeast of Kaz Mineral's Bozshakol Copper Mine ("Bozshakol")
The Bozshakol mine commenced operations in 2016 and in FY2023 produced 105,000t Cu & 115,000 oz Au per annum at US$0.95/lb Cu (net) cash costs
Reported reserves are 1.003Bt @ 0.33% Cu & 0.13 g/t Au
EL24001: 261 m of mineralization grading 0.64% copper-equivalent ("CuEq") (0.39 g/t gold("Au")
0.24 % copper ("Cu") starting from the 22 m
Including: 69 m grading 0.85% CuEq (0.39g/t Au
0.42% Cu) starting at 22 m & 48 m grading 1.00 % CuEq (0.77g/t Au
EL24002: returned 102 m of mineralization grading 0.45g/t gold-equivalent ("AuEq") (0.31 g/t gold("Au")
Including: 34 m grading 0.60 g/t AuEq (0.32g/t Au
EL24003: 264 m of mineralization grading 0.30g/t gold-equivalent ("AuEq") (0.17 g/t gold("Au")
Including: 30 m grading 0.46g/t AuEq (0.25g/t Au
CEO of Arras Minerals noted,"We're excited by these initial holes at the Berezski Central target at Elemes
The drill holes are mineralized over their entire lengths
and logging indicates mineralization is predominantly hosted in argillic and phyllic altered diorites
suggesting that these holes have drilled the large pyrite halo peripheral to the core of a large porphyry system
which are generally found to increase towards the center of porphyry copper deposit."
Figure 1
Arras Minerals Elemes Project & additional project portfolio located in Pavlodar
President of Arras Minerals commented," Results from the first 3 holes at Berezski Central are a great indication for the potential that exists at the Elemes Project
Kazakhstan is one of the lowest cost jurisdictions globally for mining
Head-grades of approximately 0.5% CuEq at nearby large-scale operations underpin strong profitability and some of the lowest operating cash costs in the world
This is the first of seven separate target areas being tested up to a depth of approximately 550 m across the 8.8 km Berezski soil anomaly
We will be expecting to release additional results from this program throughout Q1 2025 as they become available."
Notes: Copper Equivalent ("CuEq") grades reported for the drill holes at Elemes were calculated using the following formula: CuEq % = Copper (%) + (Gold (g/t) x 0.8264) + (Silver (g/t) x 0.0107) + (Molybdenum (ppm) x 3.3333)
Gold Equivalent ("AuEq") grades reported for the drill holes at Elemes were calculated using the following formula: AuEq g/t = Gold (g/t) + (Copper (%) x 1.2100) + (Silver (g/t) x 0.0129) + (Molybdenum (ppm) x 4.0334)
Assumptions used for the copper and gold equivalent calculations were metal prices of US$3.50/lb
and metallurgical recoveries were assumed to be 100%
EL24001 was designed to test the core of the soil Mo-Cu-As anomalies
with a coincident moderate magnetic and chargeability lows
The hole started in strong argillic altered andesite tuffs before passing into strongly silicified and faulted diorites at 90.0m depth
Mineralization is represented by quartz - pyrite ± chalcopyrite veins and disseminated pyrite
Molybdenite and supergene enrichment (chalcocite) is observed occasionally in the first 35 m of the drill-hole
EL24002 was aimed to follow-up hole EL24001 and test the extensive soil Mo anomaly
the hole was lost at 221.7m due to drill failure
The hole was collared in strongly argillic altered andesite tuff up to 60.0m depth
before passing into medium grained diorites to the end of the drill-hole
Mineralization consists of quartz - pyrite ± chalcopyrite veins and pyrite dissemination
Supergene enrichment chalcocite is observed in the first 40 meters of the drill-hole
and the hole intersected several narrow hydrothermal breccias containing clasts of quartz - pyrite - chalcopyrite veins
suggesting the drill-hole was drilled peripheral to the core of a porphyry system
EL24003 was drilled on the southern edge of the large Mo-Cu soil anomaly
The hole also targeted a large IP Chargeability high and was drilled to 350m depth
The hole was collared in strongly argillic altered andesite tuffs
The diorite is strongly argillic altered to 114.0m where it transitions into phyllic dominant alteration
The Diorites hosts D-type quartz-pyrite veins with rare quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite veins
Disseminated pyrite is found throughout the drill-hole (up to 2% pyrite in areas)
the hole intersected several small intervals of clast supported polymictic hydrothermal breccias

EL24002 and EL24003 showing intercepted style of mineralization and alteration
Drilling commenced in September and the Phase 1 program was completed in late December
This program of approximately 4000 metres of diamond drilling has generally focused on priority targets at Berezski Central
These targets were identified following two field seasons of comprehensive exploration work at the Elemes Project
including airborne magnetic and Pole-Dipole Induced Polarization geophysical surveys
as well as extensive soil sampling and mapping
some historical drill holes from the Berezski East and Q-Gorka targets were re-assayed with those results reported in January 2024 (see Arras new releases January 8 & 22

"It's exciting to witness the significant progress made by the Arras-Teck Exploration Alliance in understanding this prospective and under-explored belt
We anticipate commencing drill-testing of several high-priority copper targets
currently undrilled and under shallow cover
Figure 1
Arras's License Package showing Arras-Teck Strategic Alliance Areas as "Package A" and "Package B" as well as the Elemes and Beskauga Projects and the Tay Project which are 100% owned by Arras
The license packages are situated in the Bozshakol-Chingis magmatic arc
an accretionary arc primarily composed of volcanic rocks
and a Cambrian-age nickel-rich ophiolite belt
This region has been intruded by mid-Ordovician intrusions
several of which host economically significant Cu-Au porphyry mineralization
Package A is located 56km to the northwest of the town of Ekibastuz and surrounds KAZ Minerals' Bozshakol Cu-Au mine 1 and covers the trend which has the potential continuation of mineralization
This area has received limited historic exploration due to unconsolidated cover masking bedrock geology
The property consists of seven exploration licenses and covers 1,397 square kilometers
The geology consists of the Middle Cambrian Bozshakol Complex and Lower-Middle Cambrian Bozshakol Group volcanics
and along the southeastern margin of the property occurs a large sedimentary basin of Devonian-Carboniferous-aged rocks
The property covers several interesting exploration targets and mineralization styles
Volcanic-Hosted Massive sulphide deposits (VHMS)
Principal Targets defined to date include:
Large Cu pXRF soil anomaly along trend from the operating Bozshakol Mine
Historic Cu anomaly coincident with a magnetic low
Large chargeability anomaly with associated high pXRF KGK Cu anomalies
Significant Arsenic soil anomaly with visible pyrite-quartz-clay alteration
Field review found quartz stockwork veining in silicified feldspar porphyry
Minor magnetic low with minor copper supergene mineralization
Large pXRF soil Cu-Mo-As-Ag-Bi-Sb-Zn-Pb-Co soil anomaly with phyllic and propylitic alteration
Multiple pXRF Cu anomalies associated with annular magnetic targets
Large broad magnetic anomaly under a package of relatively non-magnetic sediments
Figure 2
Package B is located approximately 90km to the southeast of the town of Ekibastuz
The Package consists of two claim packages
The geology at Akkuduk consists of Devonian and Silurian-aged porphyritic andesites and basalts emplaced into tuffaceous sediments and conglomerates
several diorites and granodiorite intrusions have been emplaced
and sedimentary rocks into which several dioritic intrusions have been emplaced
northwest-southeast striking regional faults
which have brought together several different litho-tectonic terranes
each host a distinct style of mineralization
The following Principal Targets have been defined:
Broad Cu-Au-Ag-Mo-As-Pb-Zn soil anomaly with coincident IP
Silicified lithocap mapped at surface with tourmaline breccias
Undrilled swarm of 150m long by 3m wide quartz veins with grab samples up to 9.2 g/t Au and 7.8 g/t Ag
Coincident Cu-Mo pXRF anomaly with broad magnetic high
Limited Soviet-era drilling reports intercepts up to 10 g/t Au
Gold mineralization occurs as steeply dipping
Coincident magnetic high with Ni-Cr-Co soil anomaly
Cu-Au mineralisation hosted within quartz diorites and granodiorites
significant intercepts in limited historical drilling e.g.
30.5 m @ 1.65 g/t Au; 30.2 m @ 1.07 g/t Au; 19.8 m @ 1.2 g/t Au
pXRF soil anomaly hosted on volcaniclastic rocks that have been crosscut by a series of diorite dykes

Figure 4
New High Priority Drill Targets being Finalized
The 2024 exploration program by the Arras-Teck Strategic Alliance
combined with Arras's independent work across its own project portfolio
marks the most extensive greenfield exploration effort focused on copper-gold in Kazakhstan this year
Building on the geochemical and geophysical datasets from fieldwork conducted in 2023
this year's exploration programs are significantly advancing our understanding of the terranes in the Bozshakol-Chingiz Magmatic Arc
These datasets are now producing priority targets
which will be finalized and ranked for drill-testing next year
analysis of the various data subsets will continue
with plans underway to prioritize and prepare for a robust drilling campaign commencing in the first half of 2025

"Our intention isn’t to screen niche films"
08/11/2024 - The festival director shed light on the event’s 25th edition
a form of European cinema sometimes insufficiently showcased
the emergence of new talent and the different audience tastes
The director of the Arras Film Festival - which she founded with general delegate Éric Miot - Nadia Paschetto chatted to us about the event’s 25th edition which kicks off today (read our articles here and here)
Cineuropa: The Arras Film Festival is celebrating its 25th anniversary
Do you feel you’ve met your objectives?Nadia Paschetto: Our aim has always been to shine a light on European cinema in all its diversity
with a preference for films from eastern countries
we sought to show films which weren’t often broadcast in France
to honour them and to try - by way of competitions but also through other sections
because we’ve realised that it works – to attract French distributors who are travelling to Arras to do a bit of shopping
which we took on once the festival was properly established
was to help young authors make their names and bring their subsequent projects to life
So we’ve put a lot of emphasis on the Arras Days professional sidebar over the past few years
built and developed over time until it found its place within the film event landscape
We’re now well-known and renowned for our work with European cinema
both in France and across the rest of the Old Continent
Your festival is also renowned for its huge conviviality and popularity (boasting 48,000 viewers last year; in other words
outnumbering the town’s entire population)
we want people to discover films which are accessible to all
exploring social issues and incredibly human subjects which drill down into families
all in order to fuel meaningful exchanges between the audience and the filmmakers who come here to present their films
So ours is an eclectic line-up: there’s something for everyone
where the idea is to discover a different and
over and above films from the rest of Europe
to show what it is we do best in French film
we’re lucky enough to have two great actresses as guests of honour: Cécile de France and Sandrine Kiberlain
as well as the brilliant Serbian actor Miki Manojlovic
and notwithstanding the Romanian wave which seems to have endured over time
do filmmakers from Eastern Europe often struggle to make their mark over the long-term when it comes to international recognition
How would you explain this?Everything has become very strained in terms of distribution
even though it’s still a very open country compared to other European regions
where films from Eastern Europe are hardly ever distributed anymore
funding for these films can sometimes be complicated in their own countries
where international co-productions are mandatory
Some of these countries have also experienced budget cuts to their culture sectors
sometimes accompanied by rising nationalism
These socio-political-financial considerations are hinderances for emerging authors
And their films can only enjoy a real presence with the help of festivals
but we can’t control what happens after that
But there are some really promising authors arriving on the scene

(TSX-V:ARK) ("Arras" or the "Company") is pleased to announce that it has commenced an Induced Polarization ("IP") survey on its 531 square kilometer Elemes project in northeastern Kazakhstan ("Elemes" or the "Project")
to help further define the most prospective drill targets
125km long Pole-Dipole Induced Polarization survey covering the entire Berezski 8.8km x 1.5km NE-SW trending long copper ("Cu") soil anomaly (+150ppm Cu)
Initial focus of the survey will be the 2.8km x 1.6km coherent Molybdenum ("Mo") bulls-eye anomaly (> 5ppm Mo) interpreted to be the core of untested porphyry copper-gold system
The survey will also extend over the 3km x 2.2km Novi arsenic ("As") anomaly (>25ppm As) thought to be associated with a large high-sulphidation epithermal above a preserved porphyry deposit
The commencement of the IP survey works follows the recent closing of an upsized financing in which the Company successfully raised C$5.2 million to support ongoing exploration activities on the Company's copper-gold projects in Kazakhstan
The IP survey will cover the extensive Berezski copper anomaly
that displays remarkably similar geological and structural characteristics to the Bozshakol copper-gold mine located approximately 60 km northwest
"With the recent completion of the C$5.2 million equity financing
we are well-positioned to advance our exploration programs on our key copper-gold projects across a number of targets areas
The start of the IP survey at the Berezski target on the Elemes project will assist with further defining high-priority targets ahead of drill testing in the following months this summer and fall."

Figure 3
The 8.8km Berezski arsenic soil anomaly identified by Arras within the Elemes project
The IP and resistivity surveys are being undertaken by Aurora Geophysics of Astana
The survey includes 125km of survey lines and will utilize a pole‐dipole array with an electrode spacing of 200m
The survey is designed to measure to a depth of ~250m
Mineralization in porphyry deposits is associated with sulphide minerals
which makes the IP survey an important tool in targeting sulphide mineralization at depth and enhancing the definition of drill targets
the resistivity function of the survey will assist in identifying silica enriched zones
another import vector tool for future drill planning
The Berezski Target is located within the 531 square kilometre Elemes/Aimandai license area ("Elemes Project")
The property benefits from excellent modern infrastructure and ease of accessibility
being located only 20 kilometres ("km") from Arras' operational base in the city of Ekibastuz
1100 KVA power lines and heavy rail all lie within a 15-kilometer radius of the project
The Elemes Project is located within the Bozshakol-Chingiz metallogenic belt that also hosts the Beskauga porphyry copper-gold-silver project approximately 80 km to the east
and KAZ Minerals' Bozshakol porphyry copper-gold mine (2022 production 102kt Cu and 113Koz Au 2 ) approximately 60 km to the northwest

The Marriage Pact has done more than signal what we
value — its process is a constant reminder that the relationship-minded pressure is generated by students themselves.
College romantic relationships are a bit of a conundrum — on one hand
they teach students important interpersonal skills that may positively impact their life post-graduation
studies have shown that relationships can negatively impact one’s academic performance
they are starkly embedded within the culture of the University
While the University culture of relationships is not inherently negative
extensive institutional and peer pressure to be in a long-term relationship headed for marriage needlessly foregrounds these relationships in a way that is detrimental to students and the University’s mission of education
marriage was literally embedded into the university curriculum
While such a curricular endorsement of marriage is no longer present
there are now more subtle mechanisms through which the same ideology is propagated.
more than one-third of the undergraduate population
While the Marriage Pact might not seem like a serious commitment to some
the huge quantity of students who participated in an activity designed to encourage relationships suggests that
value — its process is a constant reminder that the relationship-minded pressure is generated by students themselves
when the questionnaire was seamlessly delivered into thousands of student inboxes
Many students took it upon themselves to circulate the message via a secret admirer function
reaching a number comparable to student body-wide emails
the only other student organizations that reach more people in University email inboxes are special status and agency organizations like the Honor Committee
the University Judiciary Committee and the Student Council
this organization’s successful reliance upon student buy-in for its dissemination proves that students themselves are complicit in generating a substantial amount of marriage-related pressure.
These articles represent a choice by the University who oversees these publications to publicize pressure-inducing rhetoric surrounding long-term relationships instead of covering other
This systemic pressure produced by students and the media is not benign. Marriage-based mindsets are counterproductive to and generally inhibit the University’s purpose to educate students. A study found that being in a romantic relationship increases the odds of failing to attend three or more classes in one semester by more than 200 percent
This is problematic because a student’s class attendance is arguably the most integral part of their education
as it is where they are presented with new information and are able to ask questions.
Moreover, the presence of a long-term relationship in a student’s life brings with it the likelihood of an emotional breakup. And when students undergo a breakup their academics take a blow — breakups contribute to a 16% variance in academic performance
The effects of relationships upon students are therefore potentially detrimental to one’s studies
indicating that these relationships should be cautiously undertaken and not so visibly promoted.
In continually promoting marriage-mindedness, the University and student organizations actually endanger the long-term health of student relationships and undermine the educational mission of this institution. For those who do want to get married, research shows that marriages starting later in life appear to be more successful
rather than making long-term relationships and marriage an immediate concern
students should be reminded that they will have time after college to pursue long-term relationships and marriage if they wish to do so.
Rather than so strongly perpetuating this traditional
the University community should seek to maintain values that align with the mission of the University itself — to educate students and help them succeed in their personal and academic endeavors

(TSX-V:ARK)(OTCQB:ARRKF) ("Arras" or "Arras Minerals" or "the Company") is pleased to provide an update on the ongoing exploration program across 1,736 square kilometers ("sq km") of licenses that form the Arras-Teck Resources Limited ("Teck") Strategic Alliance
The Company is working with contractors to finalize contracts to initiate geophysical and drilling programs expected to commence in the second quarter
Highlights for the 2025 Arras-Teck Strategic Alliance Program
Multiple copper and copper-gold drill targets identified from extensive 2024 field program
+5,000m follow up diamond drill program planned on multiple targets
Targeted 75 line-km Pole-Dipole Induced Polarization ("P-DP IP") program planned
Arras (via its subsidiary) to continue to operate the program on behalf of Teck in 2025
"The 2024 exploration program was a tremendous success
leading to the identification of multiple high-quality drill targets
Our team has been working hard to compile and interpret the vast amount of data collected with strong support from Teck to plan the follow up drill campaign on these targets in 2025
We're particularly excited with the range of targets that have been identified and we hope to replicate our recent success on our Elemes Project by making a new porphyry discovery in Kazakhstan"
Arras's License Package showing Arras-Teck Strategic Alliance Areas as "Package A" and"Package B" as well as remaining Arras licenses (shown in blue)
New High Priority Drill Targets Being Finalized: The Arras-Teck Strategic Alliance
along with Arras's independent exploration efforts
represented one of the most extensive greenfield copper-gold exploration programs in Kazakhstan in 2024
This work has further refined our understanding of the Bozshakol-Chingiz Magmatic Arc and led to the identification of high-priority drill targets
which we plan to test with drilling expected to commence in April this year
Summary of "Package A" Targets: Package A comprises seven exploration licenses spanning 1,397sq km
It surrounds KAZ Minerals' Bozshakol copper-gold mine and covers the potential extension of the Bozshakol trend
the area had undergone limited historic exploration
The property hosts several promising targets with diverse mineralization styles
Priority Exploration Targets in "Package A" for 2025 Program:
Large chargeability anomaly with associated KGK Cu anomalies
Coherent Cu anomaly associated with annular magnetic targets
Package A Licenses and exploration targets
Taga-Ketti Target: The Taga-Ketti target is approximately 20 km to the east-northeast from the Bozshakol Mine and may be on the same structural trend
Wide spaced KGK drilling identified several diorite intrusions with anomalous geochemistry
The geophysical data show a high chargeability halo with a resistivity low at center over the target suggesting potential porphyry-style mineralization
The upcoming exploration program at Taga-Ketti target is planned to commence with a follow-up Induced Polarization ("IP") survey to further define drill targets for testing in Q3 2025
Shirderty Target: The Shirderty target is located on a large structural trend that runs parallel to the Bozshakol Mine trend
Wide-spaced (500m spacing) KGK drilling defined a large (2 km by 2 km) coincident geochemical anomaly associated with discrete annular magnetic targets and electromagnetic anomalies suggest the potential for porphyry-style mineralization at this target
exploration will commence with an IP program to refine exploration targets
Pinta Target: The Pinta target is defined by a large copper soil anomaly coincident with large high amplitude EM anomalies
but minor moderately altered intrusions have been mapped in the area
An IP program is planned to define drill targets
Tort-Kuduk Target: The Tort-Kuduk Target is a porphyry Target defined by a coincident copper-molybdenum geochemical anomaly
Field mapping identified outcropping Quartz-feldspar porphyry with veining
The EM survey defined a strong conductivity anomaly stretching south from coinciding Mo-Cu Soil anomaly
The company is planning an IP program to better define drill targets for follow-up drilling
Summary of "Package B" Targets: consists of three exploration licenses covering 629.8 sq km
located approximately 90 km southeast of Ekibastuz
The geological setting is dominated by Devonian and Silurian-aged porphyritic andesites and basalts
which have been emplaced into tuffaceous sediments and conglomerates
Several diorite and granodiorite intrusions cut through these units
and the district is structurally controlled by a series of large northwest-southeast striking regional faults
The area hosts multiple mineralization styles
and Au-rich Volcanic-Hosted Massive Sulphide (VHMS) deposits
Priority Exploration Target in "Package B" for 2025 Program:
Besshoky Target: The Besshoky target is a poorly explored >20 sq km lithocap with coincident Cu-Mo-Se-Bi-As soil and IP chargeability anomalies
Surface mapping has identified a series of porphyritic andesites with tuffaceous conglomerates that have been intruded by a series of granites
The lithocap consists of strongly altered breccias with wide-spread secondary quartzites
The lithocap is interpreted to represent the high part of a porphyry-epithermal system
The company is planning to drill the Besshoky lithocap to gauge its potential to host porphyry Cu-Mo mineralization and high-sulfidation epithermal Au mineralization
"The Arras-Teck Strategic Alliance made significant advances in 2024 and the systematic approach by the team has now generated a number of high-priority targets for follow-up and drill-testing this year
This 2025 program presents multiple opportunities to advance promising targets on our license package in a region with proven successful operating mines but limited modern exploration over the past three decades
With multiple new targets to be tested on the Strategic Alliance
combined with our planned Phase 2 program at Elemes
Arras is in a unique position to have a number of key catalysts to drive significant value over the next twelve months"

(TSX-V:ARK) (OTCQB:ARRKF) ("Arras" or "the Company") is pleased to announce that its planned 3,381 km airborne (helicopter) electromagnetic (EM) ("Heli-TEM") survey has commenced at the Company's Bozshakol group of licenses
These licenses form part of the Teck-Arras Strategic Exploration Alliance announced on December 7
and are located nearby and surrounding the operating large-scale Bozshakol copper mine
3,381 line-kilometer Heli-TEM survey over the entire 1397 square-kilometer Bozshakol project mineral tenement package
Survey lines will be flown in a northwest-southeast (125-315) line direction
with lines expected to be approximately 500m apart
" The commencement of the Heli-TEM survey at the Bozshakol group is an important initiative which we have worked closely with our Alliance partners
The shallow overburden on most of the project has prevented us from completing geological mapping and soil sampling over the properties and this survey will provide a significant amount of quality data to help guide future exploration as we commence our hunt for additional porphyry deposits adjacent to the large-scale Bozshakol copper mine."
Future work will include evaluation of the airborne survey and ground follow-up that includes ground-based geophysics surveys
trenching and diamond drilling of identified targets

historic IP anomalies and Bozshakol copper mine location
The Bozshakol Project is located 56km to the northwest of the town of Ekibastuz and surrounds and covers the potential continuation of mineralization of KAZ Minerals' Bozshakol copper- mine
The property consists of seven exploration licenses and covers approximately 1,400 square kilometres
The properties are in the Bozshakol-Chingis magmatic arc
which is an accretionary arc composed mainly of volcanics
older plutons and a nickel rich ophiolite belt of Cambrian age that have been intruded by mid-Ordovician aged intrusions
several of which host economic copper-gold porphyry mineralization
This package is regionally folded and refolded

The Heli-TEM system is composed of a 40-metre cable to which is attached the transmitter loop
The receiver platform and the receiver coil are located at the centre of the 35 metre diameter transmitter loop approximately 0.1 metre above the centre of the transmitter plane
The real time navigation GPS antenna is on the tail boom of the helicopter
video camera and data recorder are all installed in the helicopter
GPS antennae are attached to the transmitter loop to give positional information and transmitter orientation
The survey uses a 7.5 Hertz ("Hz") one half cycle of the Heli-TEM system that is made up of a square pulse (on-time) of approximately thirty-four milliseconds in duration followed by approximately thirty-four milliseconds of off-time before the pulse is repeated with the opposite polarity
After acquisition the measured data are windowed into twenty-five ranges called "gates"
Gate widths increase as time after turn-off increases because as the energy from the transmitter decays a wider sample must be taken to get a valid average
The position of the first off-time gate is selected after examining several flights of data and is as close to the transmitter turn off as possible
The power of the pulse causes eddy currents in the system after the turn off and the first off-time gate cannot start until these have died away
The earliest data has had less time to penetrate the subsurface and so contains information from the near surface

the annual Effervescence Tasmania sparkling wine festival presented a line-up of the world’s finest sparkling wine
Tasmanian wines – specifically the pale pink stuff – came out on top
The Aussie sparkling rosé was flowing at Effervescence Tasmania festival
“Tasmanian sparkling rosé is the best in the world,” says award-winning winemaker Natalie Fryar
“Bring on the Champenoise … fight me on it!”
Fryar worked at Victoria’s Seppelt Great Western and Jansz before founding Bellebonne in cool-climate Tasmania in 2014
She has devoted her career to crafting blanc de blancs
earning the title “Australia’s sparkling queen” in the process
Her head-turning Bellebonne Vintage Rosé is made with 100 per cent Tasmanian Pinot Noir.“Why is Tasmanian sparkling rosé the best
We have astounding fruit power and expression in our pinots,” she says
Australia’s sparkling queen Natalie Fryer “There are many reasons for that
including clonal selections and our ability to be quite free in the way that we make our rosés
We’re not tied to a particular method or technique
so we have freedom to create incredibly expressive rosés; beauty without the tannin
Globally renowned winemaker Ed Carr agrees
Carr was the first Australian to be named Sparkling Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge held in London
only the second time in 40 years the award didn’t go to a French winemaker from Champagne
The award was a big deal for House of Arras in Tasmania’s Piper’s River
“It’s what we’ve always wanted: parity with quality across the top cuvées around the globe
but to get Sparkling Winemaker of the Year was absolutely stunning.”
Ed Carr was the first Australian to win the Sparkling Winemaker of the Year title

the Wine Australia Market Bulletin reported that Australia dominates the domestic sparkling wine market
While House of Arras experienced growth in the on-premise space for by-the-glass purchases of blanc de blanc styles
Carr believes sparkling rosé is the hidden treasure
His House of Arras team makes three styles
“We’re trying to champion the cause,” Carr says
Effervescence Tasmania bubbles with good energy and great wine

from cheesy toasted sandwiches to crayfish
salmon and duck or raspberries or rhubarb crumble.“Market-wise
there’s still a bit of a cultural cringe from the sweet old days,” Carr says

He was there to pick up a major award – the latest of many
Carr’s trophy cabinet is stuffed with gongs
is special: it’s the first time in the competition’s 40-year history that an Australian has been named Sparkling Winemaker of the Year
The irony here is that Carr is originally English: he came to Australia as a child in the ’60s as a “ten-pound Pom”
and there’s still a hint of salty Yarmouth twang in his voice
I’ve been listening to that voice talk about sparkling wine for a quarter of a century
I remember first sitting down with him in the late 1990s to taste the wines he’d started making using chardonnay and pinot noir grapes grown in Tasmania

13/11/2024 - Italian director Gianluca Santoni debuts with an endearing first feature skilfully mixing softness and harshness by approaching the topic of domestic violence from an original angle
in reality very far from having the murderer profile that Denni imagined
yet nevertheless very interested in the prospect of making some cash
Between the kind fake killer pretending to play along and the kid who commissioned him
at once hyper-determined and relatively naive (but not completely either)
a surprising business relationship and a nascent friendship begin (“you must learn to float if you don’t know how to swim”) with very high stakes…
Evolving on the border between the bitter social realism of his topic and the romantic tale full of tenderness of its “buddy movie” vehicle
the film finds a beautiful accuracy and a very good equilibrium between several genres
Denni and Secco’s misadventures (with both characters played perfectly) are often funny without the plot (with a script written by the director together with Michela Straniero) ever losing neither its present (domestic violence) nor its potential (murder) dramatic essence
in an atmosphere of winter greyness enveloped by Serbian director of photography Damjan Radonovic
The whole makes for an at once simple and very skilfully controlled debut feature
making Gianluca Santoni a filmmaker whose next opus we will await with curiosity

15/11/2024 - Stijn Bouma delivers a poignant and highly engaged first fiction film about the scandalous oppression of a woman of Turkish origin by the Dutch authorities
but I’ve already appealed against it twice.” – “I can’t see any record of your appeal.” – “I’ve got proof my letter was received.” – “I can’t see it on our system
I need to end this call now." The situation faced by Meral (the remarkable Dilan Yurdakul)
a divorcee of Turkish origin with two children to care for
to say the least: the tax authorities are demanding 34,256 euros from her
as an intertitle opening the film points out
certain parents were accused of child benefit fraud (often without proof)
An overwhelming majority of these parents had immigrant backgrounds
All the money received had to be reimbursed with no consideration for the devastating impact it might have on these people’s lives." Ultimately
Meral slowly realises that if her appeal isn’t on the system
it’s because the system clearly wants nothing to do with her
With each new step in the administrative process
from the attachment of earnings order which forces her to leave her job as a home help for elderly people and to become a cleaner in industrial buildings ("HR think it’s dangerous to put the fox in charge of the henhouse: you’re going into vulnerable people’s homes” – “Do you know how humiliating this is?” – “I can’t do anything about it
I’ve got orders from above") to intrusive investigations by social services (tails
social media surveillance) on suspicion of undeclared income (which people indebted to the tax system are obliged to report); from blocking her demands for urgent aid to the school and
child protection services worrying about the wellbeing of Meral’s two daughters
the noose gradually tightens around the neck of this young woman
who is drowning in a deep sense of injustice masked by a desire to save face despite extreme financial precariousness (electricity cuts
second-hand clothes and no clubs for the children
or will a miraculous window open up before her
Shot with steely meticulousness and subtly playing with the out-of-frame space
the film primarily follows its resilient protagonist as she slowly succumbs to despair
But there’s also a social services inspector (Gijs Naber) who acts as a counterpart and who’s having doubts over his assignment
but who’s answerable to a totalitarian hierarchy ("fraud is one of the biggest dangers for our society and once again
this edifying tale about the administrative machine (whose screenplay was penned by the director and Roelof Jan Minneboo) is undeniably chilling
and our empathy for the main character boundless
Some viewers might find the approach too Manichean
it took 12 years for these cases to be cleared up in the Netherlands
which resulted in the demise of a government
given that close to 120,000 parents and children had been affected by this scandal
The Hunt for Meral O. was produced by KeplerFilm in co-production with Evangelische Omroep (EO)
“I realised that as a society, we hadn’t understood what had happened at all: the devastation of lives”
The Dutch filmmaker explains why he wanted to transpose into fiction the dramatic, Kafkaesque story that opposed his country to many families forced into corners
