An infusion of funding brought about by the pandemic — and the opportunity to better assess its role and the needs of its population — has really strengthened the work that Countryside Public Health is doing
Countryside was as ready as it could be for the new virus
Before retiring and turning over the baton to co-worker Dawn Bjorgan
infectious disease expert Gloria Tobias had been monitoring the virus and its spread in China
She had local staff “practicing and practicing” for the response
there has been some distrust and disconnect about the public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic
but Countryside saw nearly the opposite effect
Countryside realized early its important role as the source of information
It worked to improve its ability to provide the information everyone — from restaurant owners to law enforcement officers — needed
a good track record of working with partners in health care in the region
There were “bumps,” but those partners trusted Countryside Public Health and supported it
The infusion of funding the pandemic triggered allowed Countryside to increase its staffing from 30 to about 32 positions
and focus on its key service areas and better align staff members' responsibilities
New funding that resulted from the opioid crisis and subsequent legal settlement also has allowed Countryside to do more to educate people about substance abuse
as well as equip an educator to bring lessons to classrooms in the five counties
An emphasis on outreach to serve clients in some of the smallest and relatively remote corners of the rural counties with regular clinics has helped
So did the fact that more people were seeking health information during the pandemic
Countryside leveraged the trust people had in it
“It gave us an audience that we maybe didn’t have before,” Mills said
Mills takes advantage of multiple social media platforms
along with traditional newspaper and radio outlets
Keeping the attention of its audience in the days ahead may be more important than ever
“My growing concern as a public health leader right now is we’re going to see a rise in infectious diseases,” Auch said
She pointed to recent reports of cases of measles and pertussis in the country as reason for concern
Her agency works to communicate to the public the importance of vaccinations against infectious diseases
and offers clinics and referrals to get people vaccinated
The percentage of children ages 24-35 months who are up-to-date with vaccines in the five Countryside counties ranges from 59.7% in Chippewa to 77.2% in Lac qui Parle
The statewide vaccination rate for that age group is currently 63%
When Auch began her public health career 25 years ago
Auch pointed out that most young people do not have the firsthand experience of having known polio and other infectious diseases
they may not have a full understanding about the benefits of vaccines
She also noted there is currently a tension in the public discourse over the right to choose and a social obligation to keep others safe
Auch said public health has generally been considered underfunded for all of her career
Those concerns are growing today in the midst of federal and state cutbacks to health funding
Countryside receives about 28% of its funding from federal sources
as well as investment interest and opioid settlement funds
The funding is very much needed in this post-COVID era
as there remain a whole range of public health issues to address
and the numbers of people being injured and killed on the roads due to distracted driving and drinking and other substance use are among some of the concerns she cited
Countryside continues to maintain its readiness for the potential of another pandemic
or reduce our defenses and ability to respond to a pandemic
There was a lot to learn and do on the fly once COVID-19 arrived
the lesson of COVID-19 was clear for Countryside

Dunn saw the challenges Kevin and his father
were facing with wind erosion and salinity
“They were really setting some examples in the community and were always willing to share (information),” said Dunn
Auch hosted a tour of his farmland for senator Rob Black and his colleagues as part of their efforts to develop a soil conservation strategy for Canada
“Kevin can often be seen in Ottawa promoting the interests of agriculture,” said Dunn
adding Auch has been involved with the Western Grains Research Foundation and has served on a number of boards in the region advancing proactive farm practices
Auch recalled in his slide presentation how passionate Yanke was in getting the word out about soil conservation
Turning Carmangay sand into productive farming soil soil was the family’s goal since Auch’a father bought the land in 1963
“Some of the places on the land were pretty eroded,” Auch said
“They didn’t have the growth protection products that we have now
Auch said he used many of the methods he learned from groups such as the Southern Alberta Conservation Association

Auch has responded by demanding a retraction and correction, accusing the party of misrepresenting her application process.
In a statement sent to members and posted on Facebook, the PC Party said Auch had not completed the nomination requirements. According to the party, she failed to submit all necessary forms, including criminal record, finance, and social media checks and did not collect the required signatures from Transcona PC members. The party also stated that she had requested an extension, which was denied.
The statement further addressed Auch’s concerns about access to the party’s membership list. The PCs said it is standard practice for nomination candidates to sell memberships ahead of time rather than relying on an existing party list. The party maintains that its selection committee followed all constitutional procedures and offered Auch an appeal process.
Auch has refuted the party’s claims. In an email to PC leadership, she stated that she had, in fact, submitted all required documents, including a recent criminal record check, social media review forms, and a candidate application, on Feb. 20, at 8:08 a.m. She also noted that she committed to submitting a child abuse check separately, which she says was permitted.
Auch accused the party of misrepresenting her compliance with the nomination process, calling it “both offensive and verging on defamation.” She demanded that the party issue a correction and an apology within 30 minutes of her email, warning that she would escalate the matter to her legal counsel if her demands were not met.
The dispute has sparked reactions from readers of The Winnipeg Sun, with some expressing frustration over the state of the Manitoba PCs. One reader described the situation as “another confusing mess that seems to have infested the Manitoba PCs,” adding, “Hopefully, there will be a more forthcoming explanation from the PC hierarchy, but so far, I am not impressed.”
Another reader questioned the handling of Auch’s rejection, writing, “Wow. How about she just walked the plank in shackles instead? This entire farce is too bizarre to be true. 30 hours? I am guessing that Susan is not ‘Canadian’ enough.”
Others lamented the party’s internal struggles, with one reader stating simply, “What a shame that the PCs are in such shambles.”
The PC Party has yet to issue a response to Auch’s demand for a retraction.

(ls)

Presupposition triggers differ with respect to whether their presupposition is easily accommodatable
The presupposition of focus-sensitive additive particles like also or too is often classified as hard to accommodate
these triggers are infelicitous if their presupposition is not entailed by the immediate linguistic or non-linguistic context
We tested two competing accounts for the German additive particle auch concerning this requirement: First
that it requires a focus alternative to the whole proposition to be salient
that it merely requires an alternative to the focused constituent (e.g.
We conducted two experiments involving felicity judgments as well as questions asking for the truth of the presupposition to be accommodated
Our results suggest that the latter account is too weak: mere previous mention of a potential alternative to the focused constituent is not enough to license the use of auch
our results also suggest that the former account is too strong: when an alternative of the focused constituent is prementioned and certain other accommodation-enhancing factors are present
the context does not have to entail the presupposed proposition
We tested the following two potentially accommodation-enhancing factors: First
whether the discourse can be construed to be from the perspective of the individual that the presupposition is about
whether the presupposition is needed to establish coherence between the host sentence of the additive particle and the preceding context
The factor coherence was found to play a significant role
Our results thus corroborate the results of other researchers showing that discourse participants go to great lengths in order to identify a potential presupposition to accommodate
and we contribute to these results by showing that coherence is one of the factors that enhance accommodation
Additive particles belong to the class of alternative-sensitive particles, i.e., they interact with alternatives. For example, the presupposition contributed by also in (1) changes depending on the location of focus (Rooth, 1996
which is marked by prosodic prominence in English (indicated by small caps): In (1a)
also contributes the presupposition that John introduced somebody else to Sue
whereas in (1b) John introduced Bill to somebody else
In an Alternative Semantics account, focus is assumed to indicate salient alternatives (Rooth, 1985, 1992, 1996
all expressions also have a focus value (indicated by the superscript f in (2ac))
The focus value of the focused constituent is a set of alternatives of the same type as the denotation of the focused constituent (2a)
the focus value is a set containing only the denotation of the constituent itself (2b)
Focus values can be composed via pointwise functional application to derive the focus value of the whole proposition (2c)
a set of propositions which differ only in that the focused constituent is replaced by its alternatives
Kripke (2009) proposed that additive particles as in (1) do not merely contribute an existential presupposition (“one of the propositional focus alternatives is true”)
but give rise to an anaphoric presupposition amounting to the requirement that one of the propositional focus alternatives is prementioned
the first sentence entails that John is afraid of something/somebody
This information is not enough to license the use of also
which seems to require that the context specifies who exactly the other individual that John is afraid of is
An account making the same predictions but for different reasons is that of Ruys (2015): He proposes that additive particles in fact merely contribute an existential presupposition that one of the other focus alternatives needs to be true (5). The anaphoricity is due to the fact that too is focus-sensitive and that focus is anaphoric (though Ruys formalizes this in terms of Givenness; see Schwarzschild 1999)
The combination of focus anaphoricity and existential presupposition explains why too is licit in a subset of possible focus contexts
namely only those in which another alternative is previously entailed to be true
The second main account of anaphoricity is one which suggests that additive particles merely require the salience of a focus alternative of the focused constituent (Corblin, 1991; Heim, 1992; Geurts and van der Sandt, 2004). Since in most examples, this is an individual, we will call this the SALIENT INDIVIDUAL account. (6) is the variant of this account proposed by Heim (1992)
the presupposition involves an individual pronoun xi which requires an antecedent in the immediately preceding context
This individual pronoun is responsible for the anaphoricity of too and other additive particles
A further variant of this account is that of Geurts and van der Sandt (2004), who propose that sentence (7) actually has two presuppositions, (7a) and (7b) (Geurts and van der Sandt, 2004
They propose that the first presupposition is hard to accommodate because it is poor in descriptive content, whereas the second presupposition can be accommodated. The underlying assumption is that the reason why some presuppositions are hard to accommodate whereas others are easy to accommodate is that the former lack a rich descriptive content—the hearer thus doesn't have enough information to know what exactly to accommodate (van der Sandt, 1992)
We test these two accounts of the anaphoricity of additive particles in two experimental studies using semantic judgments and questions targeting the presupposition, following up on a previous study in Grubic (forthcoming)
we discuss experimental work on presupposition accommodation in section 2
section 2.1 introduces the topic and shows that the German triggers discussed here behave the same as their English counterparts
Section 2.2 discusses experimental work on the accommodation of the presupposition of additive particles
These studies find that participants are willing to reinterpret the test sentences or accommodate that something in the context is the required antecedent
in order to assure that the presupposition is satisfied in the context
There are only few studies which would allow us to decide between the accounts mentioned above
and they do not investigate which further factors play a role for accommodation
Section 2.3 discusses a previous experiment by the first author on the presupposition of German auch (= “too”)
to confirm the predictions of the SALIENT INDIVIDUAL account
but additive particles in neutral contexts (i.e.
where neither of the presuppositions proposed by Geurts and van der Sandt for additive particles are satisfied) received unexpectedly high felicity ratings
Section 3 reports two new follow-up experiments that we conducted
and controls for two different kinds of possible confounds: (i) whether the presupposition of auch
and (ii) whether the context is from the point of view of the individual that the presupposition is about
The results show that at least one of these factors
the experiment retained the problem that auch was judged to be quite acceptable in neutral contexts
two changes were made to the materials in the second experiment
to see whether this has any influence on the felicity of auch in neutral contexts
to see whether participants correctly identify the associate of auch
a third type of test sentence was added in which auch unambiguously associates with the subject
A similar pattern was found for the unambiguous version
items in which the presupposition was something very frequent or likely were changed
in order to see whether likelihood of the presupposition plays a role
The result patterns in the second experiment were indeed clearer
arguably due to the elimination of this potential confound
and find that in contexts without any potentially accommodation-enhancing factors
the results look as predicted by the SALIENT PROPOSITION account
but substantially worse in (9)–(10) (mean rating: 2.16/2.79
All sentences were judged to be felicitous in the minimally different contexts in (b) entailing the presupposition (with mean ratings of 4.74/4.00/4.82
the previous experimental literature on additive particles and presupposition accommodation is discussed
in which we compare additive particles to possessives with a third person pronoun possessor
Schwarz (2007) investigates whether in German sentences with ambiguous relative clauses (subject vs
the syntactically dispreferred object relative clause reading is more readily available when it helps make sense of an additive particle
the additive particle in (12) requires an antecedent entailing that somebody else saw the woman
This is satisfied in (12) under its object relative clause reading (“The woman that the girl saw had been seen by the man
but not under its subject relative clause reading (“The woman that saw the girl had been seen by the man
He finds that in order to find suitable antecedents for auch (= “also/too”)
German native speakers can override syntactic processing preferences
Chemla and Schlenker (2012) investigate whether in sentences like (13)
participants conclude that it is reasonable for Anne to study abroad according to the speaker
that the presupposition of aussi (“Anne makes a reasonable decision”) is contextually entailed by the overt antecedent (“Anne decides to study abroad”)
This was tested for a variety of different complex sentences
including ones where the “antecedent” followed the host sentence of aussi
The results of these experiments suggest that hearers are willing to go to great lengths to find a suitable antecedent in the context
accommodate that some preceding linguistic material is in fact the required antecedent
test whether the presupposed proposition itself can be accommodated
The test sentences were judged significantly worse in negative contexts (mean acceptability: 1.3)
and significantly better in positive contexts (3.7)
These results thus corroborate the claim that additive particles require their presuppositions to be entailed by the preceding context
that a presupposed proposition cannot be accommodated
Kim's results indicate that the participants accommodate the presupposition (in about 80% of cases in the experiments for which she provides the response data)
and her eye-movement data suggests that the presupposition is processed immediately as soon as the additive particle is heard
A similar experiment is reported in Gotzner and Spalek (2014) for German auch (= “also”/“too”)
compared to nur (= “only”) and focus
The context introduced two individuals (in (19)
one of whom served as the focus in the target sentence
Participants were asked to judge the felicity of the short story on a scale from 1 (not at all acceptable) to 7 (very acceptable)
and to judge the truth of a sentence with respect to the story
for example for (17) “the witness believed the defendant”
The type of accent on the focused constituent was manipulated
but did not yield a significant difference in the auch conditions
There was no significant difference between the felicity ratings for the different conditions
The auch-sentences received a mean felicity rating of 5.7
the mean percentage of TRUE responses for the auch-conditions was around 74%
Both results suggest that accommodation of the presupposition of auch is possible
The felicity judgment results additionally suggest that if there is any additional cost of accommodation
it either does not effect felicity ratings or is masked by the fact that the other conditions also involved making additional inferences of some kind (presupposition accommodation with nur
conversational implicatures with the bare focus)
presupposed information was accommodated and recalled in 87% and 88% of cases
this was only the case in 57/59% of cases for iteratives and additive particles (anche
while the accommodation rate for additives was much higher than in Tiemann's experiment
it was still lower than for other presuppositions
not all environments which license pronouns also license an additive particle
it is possible to refer back to Jane using the pronoun she
to accommodate that Jane is having dinner in New York
there are up to now only few experiments testing the predictions of the SALIENT INDIVIDUAL/SALIENT PROPOSITION accounts
and none—to our knowledge—which test whether any further factors play a role
the result of a previous experiment in which accommodation of the additive presupposition seemed easier than expected
we present and discuss our follow-up experiments in which we additionally manipulated the following factors: (i) whether accommodation enhances coherence
and (ii) whether or not the context is from the point of view of the individual that the presupposition is about
In this section, we will summarize in some detail the results of an experiment by Grubic (forthcoming)
Our new experiments that we will present in section 3 are designed as follow-ups to this study
Grubic (forthcoming) compared the behavior of possessive pronouns and the additive particle auch in three different types of context
both potential presuppositions of the possessive/additive were explicitly satisfied by the context (1
that this individual has the relevant property)
neither of these presupposition was satisfied
only one of the presuppositions (that there is a salient individual) was satisfied
but not the other (that the individual has the relevant property)
Examples of the context types is given in (19)
The target sentences are illustrated in (20)
The participants' task was to rate the felicity of the items
and to answer a question that checked whether the second presupposition had indeed been accommodated
after reading the mixed context in (19c) and the target sentence with an additive trigger in (20b)
the participant was asked to judge whether the sentence makes sense in the context provided (“How good is the sentence in this context
Please rate it on a scale from 1 (not good at all) to 5 (very good)”)
and to answer the question “Does Hannes wear glasses?” (Yes/No/I don't know)
Third-person possessive pronouns are particularly well suited as a baseline for the experiment because they involve presuppositions that are similar to those that the salient individual account predicts for additives
seine Brille (“his glasses”) presupposes that there is a salient male individual
it is an uncontroversial assumption (which is also supported by the findings in our filler items) that this presupposition cannot be accommodated
they presuppose a possessive relation between that individual and their complement NP; e.g.
seine Brille (“his glasses”) presupposes that the salient male individual has glasses
it is an uncontroversial assumption (again
supported by our filler items) that this presupposition can be accommodated very easily
possessive pronouns should receive low ratings in the neutral context
in which no suitable individual is made salient by the context
because both presuppositions are satisfied by the context
because the salient individual presupposition is satisfied
and the possessive relation can be easily accommodated
the predictions differ between the approaches discussed above
If it is correct that additives are similar to possessives in that the presence of a salient individual is sufficient and the relevant proposition can be accommodated
they should show the same pattern as possessive pronouns: they should also be acceptable in both the mixed and the positive context
additive) should thus not interact with CONTEXT (mixed vs
the proportion of yes-answers to the question asking whether the presupposition is fulfilled should be very high for both possessives and additives
The SALIENT INDIVIDUAL account (A) predicts no interaction
but a significant difference between mixed/positive and neutral context
The SALIENT PROPOSITION account (B) predicts an interaction between TRIGGER TYPE (possessive/additive) and CONTEXT (mixed/positive/neutral)
Figure 2. Results of the experiment reported in Grubic (forthcoming): felicity ratings with 95% confidence intervals (A) and answer proportions (B)
the felicity ratings in the mixed context are closer to the ratings in the neutral context than for possessives
this difference is mainly driven by an unexpected behavior of the additive particles in the neutral context: their ratings were much higher here than for possessives
Neither of the two approaches predicted this pattern
As for the answers to the content questions
they were almost always answered by “yes” in the positive context
a higher proportion of “no” and “I don't know” answers was found
but a clear majority of trials was answered by “yes.” This suggests an overall high rate of accommodation
in line with the predictions of the SALIENT INDIVIDUAL account
which was however a bit lower for additives than for possessives
In Grubic (forthcoming)'s experiment discussed above
an interesting result was that one of the contexts that was intended as a negative baseline (the neutral context) did not show the expected results with the additive particle
Rather than rejecting sentences containing auch without a salient parallel proposition nor a salient individual in the context
participants rated them as highly acceptable
We hypothesized that this might be due to the written modality of the experiment
Reading the target sentence with an implicit prosody that differed from the intended one could have altered the interpretation: instead of the intended association with the subject (which requires stress on the additive particle)
participants might have read the sentences with stress on the object
leading to association of the additive particle with the object
this might result in a plausible reading in the neutral context
We additionally changed some of the neutral contexts. It was noted in Grubic (forthcoming) that the neutral contexts in which the test sentences received the highest ratings often involved quantifiers
where the implicit restrictor of the quantifier might serve as an antecedent
Furthermore, Grubic (forthcoming) observes that the materials of the original experiment varied with respect to the discourse-status of the individual whose property needed to be accommodated
that individual was the subject of the first sentence
which had the effect that the story seemed to be told from his or her point of view
They also varied with respect to the role that the accommodated proposition played in the discourse in which they were embedded
the presupposed meaning contribution of auch increases the coherence of the text
it might be unclear why glasses would make someone more or less likeable to Hannes
The meaning expressed by auch provides motivation for this—Hannes and the classmate have something in common
the presence of auch was not crucial for coherence in this way
We agree with Grubic (forthcoming)'s reasoning that these properties might influence how easy it is for readers/listeners to identify which presupposition the author/speaker intended to convey (this will be discussed in more detail in section 4)
We thus also aim to test the following hypothesis:
we hypothesize that it might be misleading to assess the predictions of the SALIENT INDIVIDUAL and the SALIENT PROPOSITION account based on average judgments across all materials; each account might each make correct predictions for a subpart of the data
depending on the properties of the discourse
this would amount to a three-way interaction between TRIGGER TYPE
We will describe below in more detail how we controlled for discourse type in our materials
great care was taken to ensure that the corresponding sentences without auch are entirely felicitous in the neutral context
that the context and test sentence always form a coherent text
in order to be certain that any infelicity found in these cases is actually due to the additive particle
Experiment 1 is based on Grubic (forthcoming)'s design and materials
The first difference is that we presented the materials auditorily in order to ensure that the participants correctly identify the associate of the additive particle
Details about the recordings will be provided below
we manipulated the items more systematically with respect to the discourse factors mentioned above by including DISCOURSE TYPE as a between-item factor
The three discourse types are illustrated schematically in (23) and by the examples in (24)–(26)
A comparison of the discourse types in (23a) and (23b) shows whether the point of view plays a role
whereas a comparison of the discourse types in (23a) and (23c) shows the influence of coherence
a positive and a neutral context were constructed as well
Note that the discourse type manipulation does not apply to the neutral context—there
accommodating the presupposition never increased the coherence of the text
and there was always only one individual from whose point of view the story could be construed
the presupposed information is already provided
so the discourse hypothesis does not predict an effect there
It specifically predicts an effect on only the mixed context
An example item of each type is shown below
The stimuli were recorded by the first author of the paper with a prosodic realization that unambiguously signaled association of the focus-sensitive auch with the subject. This was achieved by assigning sentence stress to auch itself. Stressed auch associates with a preceding constituent. If several constituents are available, disambiguation is possible by marking one of them as a contrastive topic by a rising accent (Krifka, 1999)
the only available constituent that the particle could associate with is the subject
Association with the direct object would require sentence stress on the object
In the conditions with a possessive pronoun
ihre Ambitionen auf den Chefsessel “her ambitions to become the boss” in (26)) was deaccented in the positive context
in which it was explicitly mentioned in the preceding context
and accented in the neutral and mixed contexts
Thirty-six native speakers of German took part in the experiment
All of them were students at the University of Potsdam and received credit for participation
this question only targeted the presupposition of the additive particle in the mixed context
The same question was asked in the positive context
where the answer was already provided by the context
It was possible to listen to the audio file again if required (the number of replays was not limited)
the participants clicked a button to proceed to the next stimulus
The 18 items were distributed using a Latin Square design and randomized
resulting from crossing the factor TRIGGER TYPE (two levels: possessive vs
additive) with CONTEXT (three levels: mixed vs
DISCOURSE TYPE was included as a between-item factor: six of the items involved a non-facilitating discourse
Each participant rated 38 stimuli (two practice trials
we obtained 36 data-points for each combination of TRIGGER TYPE/CONTEXT/DISCOURSE TYPE (one from each participant)
The results (collapsing the three levels of the factor DISCOURSE TYPE) are presented in Figure 3
Results of experiment 1: felicity ratings with 95% confidence intervals (A) and answer proportions (B)
Figures 4, 5 show the results split by DISCOURSE TYPE

The factor CONTEXT was treatment-coded with the mixed context as the baseline
DISCOURSE TYPE was treatment-coded with the non-facilitating discourse as the baseline
facilitating perspective and non-facilitating vs
For distinguishing between the SALIENT PROPOSITION and the SALIENT INDIVIDUAL account with respect to the felicity ratings, it is crucial whether there is an interaction between TRIGGER TYPE and CONTEXT. According to a linear mixed model
there was a significant interaction between these factors (mixed vs
it is crucial to test whether there is an interaction between TRIGGER TYPE
No significant three-way interaction was found
The only significant interactions involving DISCOURSE TYPE were a two-way interaction with TRIGGER TYPE (non-facilitating vs
p = 0.01) and a two-way interaction with CONTEXT (mixed vs
facilitating perspective: t = −2.12
Prior to our analysis of the responses to the question
we collapsed the “no” and “I don't know” answers to a single category (we interpret both answers as indicating non-accommodation of the target proposition)
We only included the mixed context in the statistical analysis
the proportion of “yes” answers was at or close to 100%
making a meaningful statistical analysis difficult due to complete separation
a different question was asked (unrelated to accommodation)
The remaining factors (TRIGGER TYPE and DISCOURSE TYPE) were included as fixed factors in a logistic regression model
A significant effect of TRIGGER TYPE (z = 3.09
The direction of the interactions between TRIGGER TYPE and CONTEXT is partially compatible with the predictions of the SALIENT PROPOSITION account: in the mixed context, additives are less acceptable than possessives (more precisely, the felicity difference between the mixed and the neutral context is smaller for additives than for possessives). However, as in Grubic's (forthcoming) original study
the interaction is driven by the high acceptability of additives in the neutral context rather than by low acceptability in the mixed context
and this is not predicted by the SALIENT PROPOSITION account
that DISCOURSE TYPE significantly affects the felicity of additives
The conditions including an additive are generally more acceptable (in comparison to possessives) in the facilitating coherence discourse type than in the non-facilitating discourse type
even though the proposition to be accommodated is still not entailed by the context
but instead merely becomes easier to identify because it enhances the coherence between the context and the test sentence
that although DISCOURSE TYPE should only have an effect in mixed contexts
the judgments of additives in the neutral context were also enhanced
This is unexpected because the intended facilitating perspective/coherence was not present in the neutral context
our DISCOURSE HYPOTHESIS (predicting more specific effects for the different context rather than an overall facilitation) was not confirmed
Since DISCOURSE TYPE was a between-items factor in our design
it is possible that another aspect in which the items differed lead to the differences in the neutral context; we will address this possibility in the second experiment
Our conjecture that the high ratings in the neutral context might arise because participants assign a different implicit prosody than intended was not confirmed: change of modality from written to auditory stimuli did not change this
it is conceivable that participants did not pay attention to the prosody in the items
In order to be certain that the associate of the additive particle was identified correctly by the participants
we took further measures in Experiment 2 (reported in the next section) to rule out any misinterpretation of the test sentences
A second result not predicted by the SALIENT PROPOSITION account is that, like in the experiment reported by Grubic (forthcoming)
the proportion of “yes” answers to the content question was higher for possessives than for additives
the “no”/“I don't know” answers are clearly in the minority
This suggests that most participants accommodated the target proposition in the mixed context
there is a trend toward more accommodation in the facilitating coherence discourse type
we tentatively conclude that the SALIENT PROPOSITION account
predicting that additives are only licit when the presupposition is entailed by the context
is too strong—at least in facilitating discourse types
the additive particle is acceptable to a similar degree in the mixed context as in the positive context
predicting that additives should be felicitous whenever there is another salient individual
is too weak—in the absence of facilitating discourse factors
the acceptability of the additive particle is similarly low in the mixed context as in the neutral context
conclusive assessment of the accounts is impeded by the unpredicted behavior of additives in the neutral context
In Experiment 1 discussed above, the result that additive particles were judged to be felicitous in a context that does not support their presupposition, which was already found in the experiment reported in Grubic (forthcoming)
This is unpredicted considering the previous literature
which states that the presupposition of additive particles is hard to accommodate
Assuming that the presupposition of additive particles is not in fact freely accommodatable
there are two possible explanations for this result
even though in the auditory stimuli main stress was placed on the additive particle
the participants might not have paid ample attention to the intonation
Since the word order also allows for association of auch with the VP
this would lead to a presupposition that the subject of the sentence has some other property
which is satisfied in most if not all or our neutral contexts
and would explain the high felicity judgments
the context entails that Jakob has several properties (being a student
so the presupposition that he has a further property apart from having a sister is satisfied in this context
we wanted to follow up on the hypothesis that the participants accommodate something of this sort
in example (27) that many other people have sisters
Since this factor was not controlled for systematically in Experiment 1
it might also have lead to differences between the items
confounded the between-items factor DISCOURSE TYPE
The design and materials for Experiment 2 were based on Experiment 1, but the following three changes were made: first, all direct objects referring to something that people commonly have were replaced by more specific expressions, referring to something that most people do not have, but is nevertheless relatively uncontroversial
an object like sister was replaced by the more specific twin sister
The second change was the addition of a third type of test sentence
In order to exclude the possibility that participants interpreted the additive particle as associating with something other than the subject (in spite of the prosodic cues)
we tested a further type of structure in which the interpretation is made unambiguous by both prosody and syntax
the additive particle can only associate with the subject it precedes
The third change was made to the follow-up questions in the neutral context
these follow-up questions were about the assertion of the test sentence (e.g.
“Does Jakob have a sister?”) in the neutral context and thus did not help decide whether participants accommodate the correct additive presupposition
The questions for the neutral context were thus changed in Experiment 2
so that they target the presupposition instead (e.g.
“Does somebody else have a twin sister?”)
Fifty-four native speakers of German took part in the experiment (resulting in the same number of data points per condition as for Experiment 1). Participants were recruited via Prolific. The stimuli were presented using the online questionnaire software L-Rex (Starschenko, 2018)
The procedure was the same as described for experiment 1
each participant rated 38 stimuli (two practice trials
The results are presented in Figures 6–8. Figure 6 (again collapsing the three levels of DISCOURSE TYPE) presents the mean felicity ratings and the answer proportions
Results of Experiment 2: felicity ratings with 95% confidence intervals (A) and answer proportions (B)
Felicity rating results of Experiment 2 with 95% confidence intervals
Question proportion results of Experiment 2
The results for the three different discourse types are presented in Figures 7, 8
the factors CONTEXT and DISCOURSE TYPE were again treatment-coded
The factor TRIGGER TYPE was Helmert-coded to allow comparison between additive (preposed/postposed) vs
according to a linear mixed model the factor TRIGGER TYPE (additive vs
possessive) interacted significantly with CONTEXT (mixed vs
Only one marginally significant difference was found between pre-posed and post-posed auch in form of an interaction with discourse type (non-facilitating vs
facilitating perspective: t = −1.89
the “no” and “I don't know” responses were collapsed for the statistical analysis
possessive) interacted significantly with DISCOURSE TYPE (non-facilitating vs
A marginally significant overall difference between pre-posed and post-posed auch was found (t = 1.89
One of the motivations for this experiment was to test whether participants misinterpreted the additive test sentences in Experiment 1 by choosing the wrong associate for postposed auch
The felicity rating results indicate that there was little or no such misinterpretation: only marginally significant differences between postposed auch and preposed auch (which unambiguously associates with the subject in our test sentences) were found
and the crucial observations with respect to the felicity ratings—that the mixed context is closer to the neutral context for additives
and closer to the positive context for possessives—hold for both versions of auch
the trend toward less “yes” and more “I don't know” answers for postposed auch than for preposed auch
especially in the non-facilitating discourse type
could be tentatively interpreted as an indication that participants felt more certain about the accommodated presuppostion when the associate for auch was marked syntactically
and that it would therefore be advisable to use preposed auch in future research
the results of Experiment 1 were replicated
an interaction between TRIGGER TYPE and CONTEXT was found
as predicted by the SALIENT PROPOSITION account (the mixed context is closer to the neutral one for additives than for possessives
and closer to the positive context for possessives than for additives)
as not predicted by the SALIENT PROPOSITION account
DISCOURSE TYPE was found to play a role for the felicity judgments
the facilitating coherence discourse type again raised the ratings of the items with additives
this did not affect the mixed and neutral context in the same way: it specifically raised the felicity of additives in the mixed context (as evidenced by the three-way interaction)
While in the non-facilitating discourse type
the felicity ratings of the additive particles in the mixed context are very close to the negative baseline
they are very close to the positive baseline in the facilitating coherence discourse type
The fact that discourse type had a more specific effect in Experiment 2 rather than generally raising the acceptability (even in the neutral context) could be due to our effort to make the items more uniform with respect to how common the relevant objects were; this might have eliminated a confound and therefore reduced some of the random noise between items (and thus
the tension between the two accounts might be resolved by taking into account discourse properties which can facilitate the identification of the proposition that needs to be accommodated
these findings further support the view that a salient individual is not sufficient to make the use of the additive particle felicitous
at least in the sense that it does not necessarily need to be present in the immediately preceding context
Accommodation is possible and facilitated by discourse factors
In the facilitating coherence discourse type
an additive can be as felicitous in the mixed context as in the positive context
(30)) and than our own filler item (9) (repeated here as (31))
that we took great care to ensure that the discourse is entirely natural and coherent without the particle
so that any infelicity stems from additive particle itself
our neutral contexts did not contain any propositions that are similar to a potential antecedent
We hypothesize that (31) might be particularly infelicitous because the participants try to accommodate Mia is eating a salad as the required antecedent for our busdriver is eating a bun
As a final methodological remark about our experiments, we would like to point out that our data shows a correlation between whether the answer to the content question indicated accommodation and the felicity rating
This provides support for the view that felicity judgments can be used to investigate presupposition accommodation: when a presupposition cannot be accommodated
the test sentence receives a lower felicity rating
This paper reports the results of two experiments aiming to test the salience requirements of the German additive particle auch
We tested the predictions made by the two main accounts on the anaphoricity of additive particles found in the literature: the SALIENT INDIVIDUAL account
which predicts that auch just requires a focus alternative to the focused constituent to be salient
which predicts that the context needs to entail a focus alternative to the entire proposition containing auch
Sentences with auch were thus tested in three different contexts: ones which entailed the proposition (positive context)
ones which merely made an individual salient (mixed context)
and ones which neither made a proposition nor an individual salient (neutral context)
the relevant notion of salience would thus have to be one that also applies to inferences arising from the utterance itself
immediately prementioned or mutually attended to and thus
For additive particles the truth-conditional meaning of the sentence is simply the meaning of the sentence without the particle
the additive presupposition is thus not needed for the truth conditions and can be ignored according to (33)
Third, as noted above, van der Sandt (1992) and Geurts and van der Sandt (2004) propose that presupposition triggers that are not sufficiently semantically rich cannot be accommodated because the addressee cannot identify the presupposition to be accommodated. Beaver and Zeevat (2007) formulate this as in (34)
Even though, on the surface, additive particles give rise to a presupposition that appears to be rich in content, Geurts and van der Sandt (2004)—as noted above—assume that they involve two presuppositions
of which one is similar to a pronoun and thus descriptively poor and not accommodatable
no special context is needed in order to license the use of too
since the identity of the other alternative
being the only other focus alternative in the alternative set
Thus, while we hypothesize that coherence can generally be used to help identify the information to be accommodated (not only in the case of additive particles), there are other mechanisms, such as the role of a restricted alternative set as in (36), which are limited to focus-sensitive particles
One result of our experiments was that, just like in Grubic's (forthcoming) experiment
additive particles were not as bad as predicted in neutral contexts
We showed that this was not due to a misunderstanding on the part of the experiment participants: they were able to correctly identify the associate of auch
we wanted to exclude any factors which might enhance the acceptability of additive particles in the neutral context
since we were mainly interested in factors enhancing their acceptability in the mixed context
any items in which we believed that the restrictor of a quantifier in the context might provide a kind of implicit domain for the additive particle (e.g.
“nobody [of the other guests] is talking to him
but he doesn't mind because he has a newspaper
We also excluded any items that are frequent possessions
in order to prevent potential accommodation of a very weak presupposition (e.g.
“people in general have TVs”)
It however remains an interesting question what is responsible for the relatively high acceptability of additives in neutral contexts
Two anonymous reviewers pointed out two hypotheses worth testing
The first is whether participants accommodate that the speaker (or addressee) is the individual relevant for the presupposition (as e.g.
where we readily assume that the person trying to reach Jan is the speaker
The second hypothesis is that implicit domains may play a role in more cases than we identified. This very likely plays a role for the acceptability of (38). Here, since the best group is mentioned, it is easy to accommodate that all individuals in this group have a good style of drawing
We agree with these intuitions and believe that they should be tested in further research
Since the important factor for the accommodatability of auch's presupposition is its identifiability
there are presumably many factors at play which help identify a presupposition
Since our studies were online linguistic questionnaires involving a healthy adult population
no approval by an ethics committee was required according to institution's guidelines and national regulations
Participants' consent was obtained by virtue of their voluntary participation in our study and their data were fully anonymized
MG designed and ran the initial experiment that the current experiments are based on
and wrote the majority of the introduction
MG and MW designed and ran the two experiments together

for valuable comments on our first experiment
1. Two propositions are logically independent if neither entails the other
This is needed to rule out sentences as in (i)
2. They attribute the latter presupposition to focus, via their background presupposition rule (BPR). Note however that the BPR is highly disputed (see the replies in the same volume, e.g., Büring 2004, p. 72; Jäger 2004
3. The mean ratings reported here are from Experiment 1
6. As no other individual was introduced in the context
it was not possible to formulate the same question in the neutral context
The question in the neutral context instead concerned the asserted rather than the presupposed content
“Does Isa wear glasses?” in (20b)
and is therefore not immediately relevant for the current discussion
7. The complete list of items for both experiments, as well as our recordings, can be found in the Supplementary Materials for this article
we only report the results that are directly relevant for the tested hypotheses
10. Second-lowest unadjusted p-value: additive vs
11. This is supported by a post-hoc analysis of these two subsets of the data: in the non-facilitating discourse type
there is a significant interaction between TRIGGER TYPE (additive vs
in line with the predictions of the SALIENT PROPOSITION account
there is no significant difference between the positive and the mixed context (neither as a main effect nor in interaction with TRIGGER TYPE
as predicted by the SALIENT INDIVIDUAL account
a significant main effect was found in comparison to the mixed context (t = −2.88
but also a significant interaction with TRIGGER TYPE (t = 2.00
due to the still higher than expected values of the additives in the neutral context
12. For additives in the mixed context
higher ratings were found in trials in which the question was answered by “yes” than in trials in which the question was answered by “no” or “I don't know” in both experiments (experiment1: 4.09 vs
3.28; significant according to a t-test: t = 3.08
3.34; significant according to a t-test: t = 5.93
13. Note that non-truthconditional meaning is usually not seen to be part of this causal relationship (Beaver and Clark, 2008
there is no inference that Karl asks the waiter for a sharp knife (partly) because Anna has a steak
14. For experimental results suggesting such differences see Cummins et al. (2012), Domaneschi et al. (2014), and Amaral and Cummins (2015)
16. An anonymous reviewer pointed out that example (40) is most natural with a focus accent on “un,” which seems to corroborate our claim that there are only two considered focus alternatives here
17. A reviewer asks whether we assume that coherence generally influences inferences made by the hearer
It might well be that implicatures might be strengthened if they help make the utterance that gives rise to them coherent
18. While this is a very clear example
the reviewer suggests that something like this may happen even if just a place where other people may be (an office
which is quite frequently—but not always—the case in our neutral context examples

assistant executive director of the South Dakota High School Activities Association
is retiring in July after 16 years of serving as the administrator for girls athletics
Auch’s replacement is former Freeman Public Schools athletic director Kristina Sage who has 35 years of service in Freeman
SDHSAA is responsible for state tournaments
student-athlete eligibility and the creation of rules and regulations
Auch’s portfolio of sports includes competitive cheer
She was lucky enough to be a high school freshman in 1974 when Title IX kicked in and opened the door to girls athletics
“That was when girls’ basketball started in the state of South Dakota,” Auch said
Auch went on to play basketball and softball at the University of South Dakota
She played basketball and ran track for Montrose High School
where those were the only girls sports offered when she was in school
She went on to compete in both of those sports at Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell
Her time at Menno High School lasted 26 years
20 Favorites: Links to the stories highlighting the best northeastern South Dakota athletes since 1984
but was drawn to work for the association out of her desire for more administrative responsibilities and her association with Ruth Rehn
Rehn was the first administrator for girls’ athletics
“She was the one who got everything started for the state of South Dakota in girls athletics,” Auch said
“It’s kind of interesting that there have only been two people in this position.”
Working with the association in her capacity as an athletic director was a catalyst for Sage seeking her new job
“I have a lot of respect for what the association does,” Sage said
I just felt like that was really in my wheelhouse.”
The biggest change Sage has seen in girls athletics is the growth in the number of opportunities since the days when she was limited to two sports in Montrose
she has also witnessed a change in coaching
“There weren’t many female coaches when I was a high school athlete,” Sage recalled
“Even when I started out teaching and coaching
“Our board has kind of asked us to slow down a little bit,” Auch said
“Schools need a chance go breathe and catch up financially.”
the association has implemented a formal process through which new sports must be suggested by member schools
will be the recruitment and retention of sports officials
Sage was noted for treating officials with respect
the way we treated them when they came here,” Sage said
Auch has seen the struggle of trying to keep sports officials
“One of the things we hear over and over again is
we’re losing officials because of (poor) sportsmanship,” Auch said
the association hopes to recruit more officials through a program called RefReps and getting the administrators at member schools to take a stand against poor sportsmanship
RefReps is a course in officiating offered in high schools and colleges
Thirty-two students recently took the RefReps course at USD
learning how to be officials for football and volleyball
Auch hopes they sign up to work junior varsity games
“That’s 32 people that we didn’t have last year,” Auch said
“I’m hoping that’s going to continue to move.”
Sage described her experience with poor sportsmanship as “pretty discouraging,” particularly when dealing with adults
“You just have to be willing to speak up,” Sage said
“I’m not comfortable with that.’ We need to think about how we’re treating people.”
Auch notes that fans often forget that officials are taking time away from their jobs and their families to give back to a sport they love
Lacrosse: Varsity girls team secures first NPPL championship in history of Watertown Lacrosse Club
Despite the recent need for an emphasis on sportsmanship, Auch and Sage agree that participation in high school athletics has many benefits.
“I just think it’s one of the best parts of being in school for kids,” Sage said. “They learn so much just by being a member of a team.”
High school activities are full of life lessons, according to Auch. “I think kids that are involved in athletics just turn out to be much better people.”
Auch said high school athletes learn about making a commitment while honing their leadership skills.
“There will be mistakes along the way because they’re kids,” Auch said. “We’ll work through those mistakes and move through that so we can become better individuals.”
As she tries to predict the future for a job she hasn’t started yet, Sage said she hopes for continued growth in participation in girls athletics. She has seen that growth recently in the state’s two-year-old softball program.
“Even in the second year, we had more teams just in our own area,” Sage said. “We’ll continue to see that growth, which is great.”
Auch points the implementation of softball as a sport for girls as the personal highpoint of her 16 years with the association. Softball was in discussions for four years before it was implemented two years ago. Since the sport was sanctioned, it has grown from 48 schools to about 60 schools.
“We’ve talked about it so long and to finally get it two years ago was a real highpoint,” Auch said.
After years of running playoff tournaments and state athletic events, it was a missed event that convinced Auch it was time for retirement.
When she couldn’t attend a Grandparents Day event at her granddaughter’s school in Dickinson (N.D.), the girl’s reaction changed Auch’s mind about working for another year. She vowed to be able to make it to the next Grandparents Day.
“When I’m sitting in the nursing home I’m not going to remember that I worked another year,” Auch predicted, “but I am going to know that I missed her event.”
Craig Mattick:Welcome to another edition of In Play. I am Craig Mattick. Today's guest has devoted over 40 years to the youth of South Dakota, a teacher, a coach, an athletic director, a referee, and an administrator from Scotland to Menno to being an assistant executive director at the South Dakota High School Activities Association and now retiring. Our guest today is Jo Auch. Jo, welcome to In Play.
Jo Auch:Well, thanks. Appreciate you having me.
Craig Mattick:Congratulations on retirement.
Craig Mattick:You've been on the go for so many years. Are you ready for a little rest and relaxation?
Jo Auch:Well, I got to say I've never known a pace that's a slow-down pace. I've always been a person on the go, so I'm looking forward to slowing down a little bit and spending some time with my granddaughter that lives in Dickinson, North Dakota. So there'll be a little time spent on the road going back and forth and doing some things as such. But yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I don't know what it's going to be like yet, but I'm looking forward to finding out.
Craig Mattick:Now you grew up in the Scotland area, is all of it really where you grew up back in the seventies?
Jo Auch:Yeah, actually I was in the middle of nowhere. I was 15 miles from Scotland, Parkston and Tripp, and our mailing address was all of it, so anytime we drove the car through all of it, the joke was that was all of it.
Craig Mattick:So what was family life like at that time right before you were getting into high school at Scotland?
Craig Mattick:So where were you ranked in all the kids when it came to age?
Craig Mattick:You're the baby of the family.
Jo Auch:My brother and sister would tell you that I'm the spoiled one, so I was the one who got everything that I always wanted.
Craig Mattick:Well, you were a multi-sport athlete, but, of course, in the smaller towns in South Dakota, some of those kids, they had to play more sports just to fill out those rosters. But for you, you didn't need any coaxing to play sports at Scotland. What sports did you play?
Craig Mattick:You were a three-time all-state basketball player for the Highlanders. Did you have a basketball court out on the farm?
Jo Auch:Yeah, I had a machine shed, an old school barn building that served as our machine shed where dad stored the equipment and we screwed a basketball hoop up there in a dirt area, a grassy area, and that's where I learned to play basketball. We had about a quarter mile long driveway, so you dribble the ball on those rocks and you get pretty good at being a ball handler.
Craig Mattick:That's awesome. I have heard a story that when you were a freshman at Scotland that the football coach wanted you to be on the football team. Is that true?
Craig Mattick:Oh, mom and dad said no, huh?
Jo Auch:Mom and dad put the kibosh to that one, yeah.
Craig Mattick:We all know there have been girls who have played high school football in South Dakota, but as far as I know, I've never heard of a girl being the quarterback of the football team.
Jo Auch:Well, sometimes that talk is cheap. I'm not sure what he saw in me, but back in the day, our class was a pretty good size, but we didn't have a lot of guys that played football at that time. I'm not sure he was too serious about it, but he did talk to my parents about it, so I'm going to give him credit for that one.
Craig Mattick:You mentioned when you were at Scotland, basketball was just added as a sanctioned sport. Volleyball wasn't sanctioned until 1982, but in basketball it's the mid '70s, who were some of those good teams that you faced when you played for Scotland? Jefferson may have been one.
Jo Auch:Her name was Deb Schooley. You may know Doug Schooley. Doug was in Watertown, the athletic director. He started in Scotland and Deb and Doug were teachers in Scotland and she wasn't Schooley at the time, she wasn't married yet at that time. But she was my coach for three years and then Dan Grasser took over my senior year.
Craig Mattick:What kind of a player were you on the basketball court? Tenacious?
Craig Mattick:Well, you were good enough where the University of South Dakota wanted you to play basketball for them, right? Was Chad Lavin there yet or was that right before Chad?
Jo Auch:That was before Chad. Mary Zimmerman was my coach at that point in time. She was the one who recruited me and Kirk Frederickson from Northern tried to recruit me as well, and I ended up landing at USD and never regretted it.
Craig Mattick:Well, I tried to find some information about your playing days at USD. I was able to find your senior year, you guys played in the North Central Conference tournament. It happened to be in Vermillion that year. It was 1982. You beat Morningside in the opening round of the tourney and then North Dakota State beat you guys. But in that tournament, you scored 34 points, 14 assists, and 11 steals during that tournament.
Craig Mattick:You played over 100 college games with USD.
Craig Mattick:Your senior year, you had a couple of freshmen on that team that turned out to be pretty darn good for the coyotes. One, of course, Katie Dailey from Jefferson and the other one, Ann Pancoast, who came from Sioux Falls Washington. They were freshmen. They had that deer in the headlight look, I think, as freshmen having you on that roster. It was a young roster when you were a senior.
Craig Mattick:During your time in Vermillion at USD, you wanted to be a teacher. When was it you decided that you wanted to be in education?
Craig Mattick:Yeah. You graduate from USD back in 1982. Were there a lot of teaching jobs out there at that time, 1982?
Craig Mattick:They had an idea that maybe you could coach gymnastics.
Jo Auch:Well, yeah. I took a class in college from Mark Upward who I shoot and taught under in Vermillion as well. Fantastic guy, taught me an awful lot, but was not able to teach me a heck of a lot about gymnastics.
Craig Mattick:But you taught social studies and you taught FIAD. That's something you started with right away, correct?
Jo Auch:I did. Yep. I taught middle school social studies and K-8 physical education and then I coached three sports at that point in time. I started out coaching basketball and track were the two that I started with. And then when volleyball came about and Menno finally started volleyball, a friend of mine, Glenda Bowman and I started the program in Menno. I think it was in '90 or '91, somewhere in there. And that really became one of my favorite sports rather quickly.
Craig Mattick:Well, you didn't play volleyball in high school at Scotland. It wasn't a sanctioned sport yet. And, of course, then volleyball remember was in the winter and girls basketball was in the fall, but how did you adapt to learning volleyball, being a coach and moving on with that program?
Craig Mattick:Well, Menno has not made it to the state volleyball tournament. How close did you get when you were coaching?
Jo Auch:Yeah, unfortunately that was back in the day of the Viborg-Hurley, the Hurley, I guess I should say, the Woodwards, if you remember those names, the twins and their hitting power was just way too much for us all the time. So again, you make it to that level and once you hit them, you just hit the brick wall. Parker was another one obviously, and they were all in our region.
Craig Mattick:Menno girls basketball, you coached the girls basketball. They have made it to the state basketball tournament once. That was in 2000. What was that tournament experience like?
Craig Mattick:I was able to follow Brie at the University of Sioux Falls when I was doing their games on the radio. A great outside shooter, Brie Wilmoth. That was fun. At least we talked about Menno once in a while, which was pretty fun as well. When did you become the athletic director for Menno?
Craig Mattick:Jo, becoming the AD set the stage for you for what was to come. It's 2008 and there's an opening at the South Dakota High School Activities Association as long time member Ruth Rehn retired. Ruth had been involved with Title IX in South Dakota. She was awesome in that position. She's a great lady. When you were coaching at Menno, would you at times run into Ruth about various issues?
Jo Auch:Yes, exactly. I was always on time, that's for sure.
Craig Mattick:So what intrigued you about applying for that job with the association?
And I remember the interview. I walked in the interview. There were nine people sitting in the room with suits and ties and all of that. And then there was a chair in the middle with a glass of water, and that was my spot. And I felt like I was in the middle of a firing squad. So we had the interview and did that on Sunday. I think they've interviewed two on Sunday and two on Monday.
And Tuesday, I got a call from Wayne and I remember our secretary in school, Sheila, came to my room. I was teaching social studies, sixth grade social studies, and came in and she said, "You've got a phone call on line one." And I was in the middle of a lecture and I said, "Just take a message. I'll get back to him." And she said, "No, I think you're going to want to take this one. It's Wayne Carney." So off I went. She watched my class and off I went.
Craig Mattick:I'm assuming those nine people on the interview asked you more than about gymnastics. They asked you a few more questions than that.
Jo Auch:Yeah, they did. Like I said, it was a true firing squad. I'm not going to lie. That's what it felt like.
Craig Mattick:I was going to ask those first few years though, what was the job like? There were so many things to take under your wing. What were those first few years like?
And gymnastics was another one. I remember talking to Ruth and saying, Ruth asked me, "What do you know about gymnastics?" And I said, "Not much." And she goes, "If you don't know it, you're never going to understand it." And she's absolutely correct. She said, "You just find people that you can entrust. You find people that can help you learn and help you understand. And it's all about managing." Those two were my biggest challenges along the way.
Craig Mattick:You oversaw boys and girls tennis, volleyball, competitive cheer, competitive dance, sideline cheer, boys and girls basketball, you mentioned gymnastics and softball. They might as well have added football for you too there, Jo, you did so many. But during your time with the association, the sports of softball, girls wrestling and soccer were added as sanctioned sports, but you played a huge role in getting softball sanctioned. What was that like?
Craig Mattick:Well, you got to throw out the first pitch of one of the games.
Jo Auch:You mean I got to roll out the first pitch. We had people that did it at each of the classes. I threw it out for class B, and we had two other people that did it for class A and class AA, and it was a feel-good feeling.
Craig Mattick:It went over the plate. It just happened to roll it over-
Jo Auch:It did. It was right over the plate. It was even a windmill. Come on.
Craig Mattick:Another issue that you've been a part of here late before you retire is the recruitment and training of officials. And you've gotten the University of South Dakota involved. What has that process been like now?
Craig Mattick:March 2020, the COVID year, everything shut down. That had to be a very stressful time for you and the association.
And to take those opportunities away, those kids, so seniors, that's their senior year, they did not have the opportunity to finish what they had worked so hard for their entire career. And that was really the sad point for me and for the office as well. It hurt us to have to do that, but we had to do what was best for our membership at that point in time.
Craig Mattick:16 years with the association. What are you going to miss the most?
Craig Mattick:You have done an awesome job, Jo. No doubt about it. Thank you. Thank you for what you've done. Two more for Jo. You mentioned Kristina Sage at Freeman takes over for you. What is your biggest advice to Kristina?
Craig Mattick:And what is the biggest item on your bucket list to complete as retirement arrives?
Jo Auch:Well, everybody asks me how many days I have left and I tell them I have four state events left. And that's how you gauge it in this business, I guess I just hope that people know that along the way that I've given it my all, that I enjoy my job. I go to work every day and enjoy what I do.
Craig Mattick:And you've been awesome with what you've done.
Jo Auch:Thanks. Sorry, I get a little emotional here.
Jo Auch:It means a lot. That job has meant the world to me, no question about it. And I wish Kristina the best. I wish the High School Activities Association continued success. And like I said, I'm going to be around and if they need any help along the way, I'm happy to sweep a floor or run a shot clock or keep a scorebook or whatever it's I need to do at that point in time, so happy to help.

• The by-election was announced on Feb. 18. • On Feb. 19, I spoke with the PC CEO, who was initially excited. • Just hours later, I was told I needed 21 signatures from active PC members in Transcona — but they refused to provide a membership list, they banned me from selling memberships and they gave me just 30 hours to complete the impossible task.
Auch to The Winnipeg Sun, “The PC Party gave me just 30 hours to collect 21 signatures from active PC members in Transcona — without providing a membership list or allowing me to sell memberships. It was an impossible task designed to keep me out of the race.
“Not only did the PC Party refuse to give me a membership list, but they also blocked me from selling memberships. I spent two full days trying to track down active members, only to be told at the last minute that some of my signatures didn’t count — with barely two hours left to fix it.”
When The Sun inquired whether she thought Shawn Nason was the right choice, she replied, “Honestly, it’s not up to me to decide whether Shawn Nason is the right choice or not, but just a few months ago, he helped the federal NDP Party candidate who beat Poilievre’s Conservative candidate in the Transcona By-election. But why not let the members decide,” Auch said.
Auch added, “Transcona deserved a fair, competitive process — but the party insiders made sure that didn’t happen. There are rules, but under these exceptional circumstances (extremely short timeline), the party should have been flexible.
“I would think that the PC party would want as open a competition as possible to encourage their constituents to decide who the best candidate for representing them would be. It is the nature of a democracy and I would hope this party would lean more to that than dictatorship.”
In a social media post, PC leadership candidate Wally Daudrich said, “I’m curious to know why our party appointed a candidate in the Transcona by-election who just a few months ago campaigned for Jagmet Singh’s NDP candidate, helping defeat Pierre Poilievre’s candidate in that riding’s federal by-election.”
The Progressive Conservative party nominated former Winnipeg city councillor Shawn Nason as its candidate.
Nason served as Transcona’s city councillor from 2018 to 2022, a term that ended with his defeat and the return of former councillor Russ Wyatt.
The Manitoba NDP has nominated educator Shannon Corbett as its candidate. A lifelong resident of Transcona, Corbett has taught in the River East Transcona School Division and served as vice principal at Bernie Wolfe School and Transcona Collegiate.
Voters in Transcona will cast their ballots on March 18 to decide the riding’s next representative in the provincial legislature.
The below are some of Auch’s interactions with the Tories. The first is Auch’s request for an exemption, the second the PC Party CEO’s response and finally Auch’s request for an appeal.

When the lights suddenly came back on long after nightfall
Joyful shouts like "Siii" (Yesss) and "Vivaaa!" (Hurrraaay) were heard from passing cars
while others enthusiastically sang the famous song "Y Viva España."
The problems in Portugal were caused by a disturbance in the Spanish power grid attributed to a "rare atmospheric phenomenon," reported RTP and the British broadcaster Sky News
but the complete normalization of the grid could take "a week due to the complexity of the phenomenon." The Portuguese Ministry of Defense called on the population to remain calm
according to the newspaper "El País," announced it was investigating whether a hacker attack could be behind the power outage

The Portuguese network operator REN stated that "the entire Iberian Peninsula" was affected
the power supply has been interrupted since 11:33 a.m
"All plans to restore energy supply have been activated - in collaboration with European energy producers and operators," added REN
traffic came to a standstill in some areas
There were long traffic jams because traffic lights had failed

I’m sorry you’ve lost Wendy but it was good to see that you had so much time together through it all

Everything was so organized and pertinent to what we needed
courteous and very helpful during our emotional and challenging time
They were so prompt on answering any questions and changing things
They were prepared and respected any religious decisions
The process was so seamless and made easy in such a high stress situation
In the past 2 years Springfield has helped us through the death of my Mother and my Father
Their response and help allowed us to focus on the remaining family rather than worrying about details of the funeral and all the notifications that are required upon a death
The atmosphere has been nothing but professional during times of grief
the staff coached me on the next steps and looked after filling in all the government forms that I needed to sign
which took a huge burden off my mind at the time
From the time I called to the completion of all the services
There was a sense of caring from each staff member
I was turning over my Mom to their care and I felt very comfortable with everyone
I felt heard and never felt pushed into any decision
I have always found the team at Springfield Funeral Home to be VERY caring
I have and will continue to recommend them to anyone who asks which funeral home would I suggest they use
No other funeral home I have dealt with even comes close to Springfield Funeral Home
I was made to feel as if I was the only one they had to serve
Everything that was arranged for us was perfect
Thank you for making this difficult time a little more acceptable via your staff’s obvious caring and respect
I liked the personal treatment given to my mother who is 97 years old
I found Springfield employees pleasant and sincere
was that the funeral home would help me get through the paperwork need at this time
Since this was my first experience (with a funeral home)
everything was above and beyond what I expected
Thank you to your team for your kindness to me at a very challenging time
You have now taken care of both of my parents with professionalism and care
Springfield Funeral Home is always professional
We appreciate that you have dedicated staff for all needs from planning the service to completing government paperwork
I am not sure there was anything you could have done to make a very intense emotional time less stressful
Although we hadn’t expected Ken to want a service
when he said we needed to have one for us not him
Your sincerity and compassion meant everything to us
your compassion and professionalism is truly amazing
super professional and caring as each guest arrived
Keep up the good work that you do as it is such an important service you provide
It is still the most difficult time in a person’s life
We appreciated the peace of mind that everything was being looked after
You provide a wonderful service for people going through a traumatic time
The kindness and professionalism shown by the staff at Springfield Funeral Home was exemplary

In the first phase of the Rail Nordica project
a train line is to run between Kemi and Haparanda

11:52Planning for a rail connection from Kemi to the port of Narvik in northern Norway will begin this year
the government decided in mid-term budget framework talks on Wednesday
as important for security of supply in times of crisis
a standard European-gauge railway will be built between Kemi
and the neighbouring Swedish town of Haparanda
Open image viewerThere is also a long-term plan for a rail link between the Swedish mining town of Kiruna and Kolari in Finnish Lapland
seamless cross-border rail traffic is not possible because Finnish tracks are nine centimetres wider than European standard tracks
it still uses a width commonly used in the nineteenth century
referred to as the "Russian gauge"
the government of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) earmarked 20 million euros for an initial track gauge study
Minister of Transport Lulu Ranne (Finns) described the transition to a new track gauge between Haparanda and Kemi as the first step in a long-term project
Ranne said that the European Commission has pressured Finland to move toward changing its track gauge
which would be a hugely expensive long-term project
Nato and the Finnish Defence Forces have made assessments of the most urgent major European military mobility project

includes requirements for the study and planning of the transition to the standard 1,435 mm track gauge in countries with different track gauges
which dates back to the nineteenth century
The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (FTIA) is planning a narrower-gauge rail line first to Kemi and in the future also to the major northern city of Oulu and the village of Misi in Rovaniemi
near a Defence Forces depot and shooting range
existing tracks already connect Haparanda with Narvik via the Swedish mining towns of Kiruna and Gällivare
According to a preliminary Transport Ministry estimate
modifying the track as far as Oulu would cost more than 1.5 billion euros
more specific details will be revealed once the planning process gets underway
"This is planning money for a few years
I would say that there are plenty of gauge-switching plans for the whole of Northern Finland into the 2030s," Ranne said
Finland has been working on the issue in partnership with authorities in Nato ally countries Sweden and Norway
A uniform track gauge would be decisive for national defence
Nato could transport equipment to Finland by rail
Ranne noted that track plans are not just a security issue
accessibility and operating conditions for business
is also a strong growth measure," she argued
Ranne predicted that rail overhaul projects would have a significant employment impact in Lapland and Northern Finland
Lapland Regional Governor Hannu Takkula hopes that the track work will begin promptly
"The Narvik rail connection is part of our regional plan
The connection is important for security of supply," said Takkula
deputy commander of the Lapland Jaeger Brigade of the Finnish Defence Forces
said that the northern rail connection is currently a real bottleneck
"Now nothing can cross the border without special arrangements," he told Yle
Mure pointed out that compatible rail connections are crucial in transporting heavy military equipment
Meanwhile the government's statement on its midterm framework budget decisions did not mention long-debated plans for a new rapid rail link between Helsinki and Turku. Last week, Orpo asserted that the project was moving ahead despite Ranne's decision to shelve it
