The TimesPresident Macron’s ministers used to endure restless nights
France’s insomniac head of state would bombard them with messages in the early hours
asking for explanations on the finer points of their legislative programmes
They were expected to have their phones on
Macron has little contact with many of its members outside official occasions such as the weekly cabinet meeting and limited influence over key domestic policy decisions
he thinks twice before messaging a minister
according to people familiar with the workings of government
“He must be bored in the middle of the night now,” said François-Xavier Bourmaud

Vallourec will participate in a technical presentation during the ADIPEC conference this week
discussing technological advancements tailored to the hydrogen sector in collaboration with Gasunie
The "OCTG Connections Test Protocol for Underground Hydrogen Storage" presentation is scheduled for Thursday
Vallourec also is highlighting a range of technologies that support the energy transition
the company will provide presentations on its connections
engineered to endure the most challenging conditions in both offshore and onshore drilling operations
as well as dedicated connections to support the development of unconventional applications
The extension takes effect in January 2025 and will run through January 2027
In the North Sea’s turbulent offshore environment, TotalEnergies needed a connection that would deliver reliability for its project
Vallourec proposed its VAM SLIJ-3 semi-flush connection
designed to tolerate critical loads for offshore use
Looking to expand and improve operations in the North Sea
TotalEnergies prepared for further rigorous conditions in the offshore region
the company also saw the possibility of mud permeating the formation during the drilling phase of the well
This permeation results in gas leakage from the formation
Vallourec said TotalEnergies required a gas-tight
with robust drilling capabilities in the event of these mud losses and necessary sealability performances inside and outside of the casing.
Vallourec first introduced VAM SLIJ-3 to TotalEnergies in 2017
providing details on the new connection and its increased performance rating in comparison to their earlier model
Vallourec said VAM SLIJ-3 is a semi-flush premium connection that was seen as a potential solution to the occurrence of mud losses during drilling
For better performance in ultradeep offshore environments
the tool is equipped with higher torque capacity
a metal-to-metal seal for internal and external pressure resistance
and increased compression and tension capabilities
Vallourec worked with TotalEnergies to devise a testing protocol that would simulate the demands that VAM SLIJ-3 would come up against in the North Sea
TotalEnergies needed to see that the connection would be externally gas-tight
“The challenge here is that any external pressure test we do is never done with the medium of gas
which is less susceptible to leakage than gas,” said Mark Byrne
The research and development (R&D) team at the Vallourec Research Center in Aulnoye-Aymeries
collaborated with TotalEnergies to create a test specifically encompassing these variables
Two steps of the test took place within the R&D facility: one at 195 C and the other at 215 C
VAM SLIJ-3 successfully met the requirements of the testing protocol
The partners successfully completed first delivery in the North Sea
The connection has since been applied in other regions
where more than 45,000 joints have been successfully installed
Under the name Delphy
Vallourec is proposing to facilitate large-scale storage of gaseous hydrogen using tubes
columns of tubes make it possible to store between 1 and 100 tonnes underground
in complete safety and with a minimal footprint
Vallourec, a specialist in tubular solutions for the energy sector (oil and gas), is now tackling mass storage of hydrogen. Its new solution was demonstrated on December 5, 2023, as explained in this press release
The company installed a vertical compressed hydrogen gas storage demonstrator at its Aulnoye-Aymeries plant in northern France
which makes it easier to integrate into constrained industrial environments
it offers a secure solution for large-scale hydrogen storage
Vallourec is committed to ensuring that the pipes and connections are hydrogen-tight
and to training and certifying the technicians who install them
Vallourec will monitor and maintain the equipment
“The emerging hydrogen market offers excellent growth prospects
It demonstrates the value of our technologies to the new energy sectors and confirms the Group’s ambition to be a key player in the energy transition and low-carbon economy within the 2050 timeframe,” comments Philippe Guillemot

The manufacturer of tubes for the energy industry is cutting 2,950 jobs
By Jean-Michel Bezat
Elisabeth Borne would probably have preferred another announcement two days after her appointment as the new French prime minister
a manufacturer of seamless tubes for the energy industry
at the presentation of its first quarter results that it is eliminating 2,950 jobs worldwide
with 65 at the Meudon (Hauts-de-Seine) headquarters; 104 at its Saint-Saulve (Nord) plant
which will close; and under 100 at Aulnoye-Aymeries
which will keep its two plants and become the group's global R&D center
The remaining French layoffs are at the Valenciennes service center
which is 41% owned by the American Apollo and SVPGlobal funds
believes that the loss of liquidity had become unacceptable and was threatening its survival
The cuts will be spread over 2022-2023 and the restructuring will
increase the gross operating surplus of 230 million euros per year
which will make it "stronger and more efficient." It had been losing 100 million euros EBITDA (earnings before interest
depreciation and amortization) a year for the past seven years in Germany
and soaring energy costs made any prospect of recovery unlikely
While the unions acknowledge that they had expected this plan
the announcement did not lessen the anger of the employees
who have been impacted by five redundancy plans in 10 years and have decided to fight for the best possible compensation
"Vallourec has had public money to make investments in Brazil and China
and it is France that suffers," Michaël Tison
representative for the CFDT union at Saint-Saulve
where 350 jobs had already been lost in February 2021 out of a total of 1,000 job cuts worldwide
take early retirement or be reassigned internally
Guillemot said that the others will benefit from "support," but didn't specify the terms or the financial scope
In the absence of a credible takeover by the employees of the site put up for sale in November
2,135 jobs will be cut and operations transferred to Brazil
Saint-Saulve no longer had any industrial purpose
since it provides finishing for products from across the Rhine

To make the unseen seen has been the kernel of the discipline of photography
the photographers have manipulated reality as a way to open a composition for a contemplative engagement
Inka and Niclas Lindergård’s photography-based art has incessantly offered insights into contemporary perceptions of nature and the interconnectedness between the photographic medium and the stylisation of landscapes
Their captivating works feature bright utopian landscapes that not only captivate viewers with their beauty but also encourage them to contemplate the cultural aspects embedded within
they provide an open gateway to the hyperrealistic synthesis of beauty
and the visual desires that permeate our world
they have chosen to work in the moment of exposure
even if they fiddle around too much in the post they risk breaking the spell
Inka and Niclas’s partnership has been intense ever since they met in 2007 during their photography studies
Synonymous with illusory and surrealist imagery
the duo often spends hours trekking through nature to find the perfect photographic subjects
Waiting in patience they park themselves at a particular spot in order to create an ethereal atmosphere
providing them with a brief window of opportunity to capture the shot
the night scene or the snow-laden mountains of the photographs even though at first glance seem abstract but on a closer look are an extraction of a lesser-encountered reality
Throughout their artistic oeuvre, Inka and Niclas have delved deep into our modern understanding of nature, exploring its intricacies through the lens of photography. Their collective notion of what constitutes a picturesque landscape has been shaped not only through immersive travel experiences but compounded by the consumption of nature through the means of technology
Through the lens of the camera and the screens of digital devices the duo partake in the experience of nature
only to validate the existence of humans through this process
the duo decided to expand their ongoing series Family Portrait
which originated after the birth of their first child
they now incorporate their sons into the project
The series explores phosphorescent imagery
featuring self-portraits of the family adorned in reflective clothing against lush backdrops
the photographers highlight the significance of observing the passing of time which is attributed to the evolving landscape
The series Family Portrait captures the self-portraits of the artist duo and their children in settings that are not bound to real-life imagery
Their choice of clothing reflects light back into the camera lens
rendering them anonymous while emanating a radiant aura in the photograph
The camera erases them from the composition only to let the bodies of the family leave glowing holes in the landscape
The photographers have been working on it for close to eight years
it has recently gained the eyeballs of the audience
The duo confesses to always spending a lot of time
just rearranging works in a model of the space
“We need to find out how the individual works talk to each other
it changes everything,” mention Inka and Niclas
It is all about finding tension and liveliness
“If you find yourself thinking about something you ate yesterday it was probably really good food
you do not remember food of average quality,” continue the photographers
If a good show leaves you inspired in one way or another
leaving the visitor still inspired the day after would be something to strive for

In the North Sea’s turbulent offshore environment, TotalEnergies needed a connection that would deliver beyond standard reliability for its project. Vallourec proposed its new VAM® SLIJ-3 semi-flush connection, designed to tolerate critical loads for offshore use.
Asking for external gas tightness was a truly unique request. The formation TotalEnergies would be drilling through was much like white chalk in terms of makeup, so the drilling pressure is very near to the pressure at which the rock starts to be permeated. If the pressure is even slightly more than it should be, there will be mud losses.
Vallourec first introduced VAM® SLIJ-3 to TotalEnergies in 2017, providing details on the new connection and its increased performance rating in comparison to their earlier model, VAM® SLIJ-II. Over time, information was exchanged with regards to the development of this new connection. TotalEnergies, who were aware of the very real possibility of mud permeation and gas release, saw VAM® SLIJ-3 as a suitable connection for this application.
Representing the latest generation in a legacy of reliability, VAM® SLIJ-3 inherits the advanced thread design of industry standby connection VAM® SLIJ-II. For superior performance in ultra-deep offshore environments, it is equipped with higher torque capacity, a metal-to-metal seal for internal and external pressure resistance and increased compression and tension capabilities.
To verify performance quality, Vallourec worked with TotalEnergies to devise a testing protocol that would simulate the demands that VAM® SLIJ-3 would come up against in the North Sea. TotalEnergies needed to see that the connection would be externally gas-tight. The challenge here is that any external pressure is generally never done with the medium of gas, but with fluid, which is less susceptible to leakage than gas.
The research and development (R&D) team at the Vallourec Research Center in Aulnoye-Aymeries, France, collaborated with TotalEnergies to create a test specifically encompassing these variables. The physical testing was witnessed by the TotalEnergies Drilling Engineer heading the project, Vallourec engineers and a Third Party Inspector representative from TotalEnergies. Two steps of the test took place within the R&D facility: one at 195° C, the other at 215° C.
With an outstanding story behind its first delivery in the North Sea, VAM® SLIJ-3 has now exceeded its abilities as the highest-performance semi-flush casing connection to date. Application of the connection in other regions, such as the Gulf of Mexico, where more than 45,000 joints have been successfully installed, speaks to global circulation to come.
