infectious disease specialist It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Therese Darveau She is survived by her sons Eric (Julie) and Alain (Kendal) Thank you to Coastal Breeze staff and residents Her kind and loving heart will forever be remembered A celebration of life will be held on June 7 Maier-Frawley has acted at the Gauteng Division of the High Court for the past three years During that time she has had to deal with the Nero-esque figure of former South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) former chief executive who was being paid R4.2-million a year while the SABC teetered on the verge of bankruptcy IN SABC Soc Ltd v SABC Corporation Pension Fund and Others informed the fund that it was investigating him for misconduct and requested that his pension fund pay-out be stopped The fund agreed pending the outcome of an urgent application to interdict payment The SABC sought relief in two parts: first interim relief to restrain the fund from paying out the moneys described to set aside an award to Motsoneng by the SABC’s Governance and Nominations Committee This judgment dealt only with the interim relief sought Maier-Frawley noted that “[c]ourts have always been inclined to adopt a pragmatic approach in dealing with technical objections” and that a common sense approach to the acceptance of affidavits was required with the true test being whether all the facts pertaining to the matter had been put before the court She rejected the argument that the SABC had made out a new case in reply and dismissed a striking out application by the respondents Maier-Frawley also condoned the late filing of the SABC’s replying affidavit taking into account that “the issues raised by the matter are of considerable importance not only to the parties but also to members of the public at large … That the case evokes the public interest in the light of the fight against corruption in our country permits of no doubt.” Rejecting an argument that a report by the Public Protector constituted impermissible hearsay evidence Maier-Frawley then turned to consider whether the requirements for an interim interdict had been met “The allegations made in the SABC’s affidavits appear to point to the fact that Motsoeneng unlawfully received payment of a success fee in the amount of R11 508 549,12” and that the evidence put forward by the SABC was “sufficient to prima facie point to Motsoeneng’s intentional misappropriation of public funds The SABC’s allegations support the inference that Motsoeneng knowingly acted in his own self-interest in appropriating to himself public funds entrusted to his care as public functionary which caused the SABC to suffer loss,” she found in a coruscating judgment As no serious challenge had been made to these allegations She also ruled that the SABC risked suffering irreparable harm if the interdict was not granted and found that the balance of convenience was in favour of the granting of the interdict Fifty-seven year-old Maier-Frawley holds a BA (1982) and an LLB (1984) from the University of Witwatersrand In 2013 she obtained a Higher Diploma in Alternative Dispute Resolution (summa cum laude) from the University of Pretoria/Arbitration Foundation of South Africa She worked for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) as a prosecutor and senior public prosecutor before joining the Bar in 1990 Advocate Avrille Maier-Frawley is what is called a ‘senior-junior’ member of the Johannesburg Bar She also has an experience as an attorney and a prosecutor the Chief Justice asked her why she had not yet attained silk status Adv Maier-Frawley sketched her challenging circumstances in which she was first only limited to matrimonial law and later balanced motherhood and the pressure (and costs) of sustaining an advocate’s practice meant that her practice was not large or diverse enough for her to qualify for silk based on the current requirements for awarding of silk status Transformation of the legal profession was a recurring theme throughout this round of interviews and Adv Maier-Frawley was not spared She was asked about her contribution to transformation She explained her challenging circumstances but added that she was able to mentor and refer briefs to black (and women) junior advocates even when she was out of practice as a full-time mother Adv Maier-Frawley had dealt with a case of controversial fugitive Radovan Krjecir Mr Krejcir thanked her for how she handled the case She was asked about why she thought he did this She explained that it was likely because she treated him with dignity Advocate Maier-Frawley was recommended for appointment Our commitment to bringing transparency to the judicial appointments process in South Africa By Nikayla Goddard The 2020 Students’ Union Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS) welcomed 48 undergrad students to present their labour of love research projects The opportunity to showcase their research came with the opportunity to win awards and cash for their hard work over the past year.  The 15th annual URS was held online due to COVID-19 but that made the symposium more accessible to a wider audience Participants made five-minute video presentations on YouTube that could be shared with friends A total of 17 different categories for prizes were available with a total of $23,000 in cash prizes given to participants Some of the categories included faculty awards Office of the Vice-Provost (Libraries and Cultural Research),The Consent Awareness & Sexual Education Club Award Office of the Vice-President (Research) and more “The fossil assemblage from my study contained only small and/or young fish and reptiles,” she said “The absence of adult organisms indicates a seasonal shallow pond and a space where baby fish could grow and develop away from large organisms Results from my study support the dominant hypothesis that Bukwa was a seasonal pond ecosystem surrounded by forested terrestrial vegetation This contradicts the image of tropical forests that you might think of when contemplating ancient Eastern Africa This is important to consider in future research when interpreting the adaptive environments of ancient primates.” Aiello was excited to be able to present her fascinating project at the URS adding that the online nature of the URS was great to share her project with family and friends as well as makes scientific research more accessible in general “I feel very fortunate to have been able to participate in research safely during a global pandemic when so much has been put on hold or cancelled altogether,” she stated for all her help and support during my Independent Study and for providing this research opportunity after all my summer research plans abroad were cancelled due to COVID-19.” Emily Wang took home the Future Alumni Community Impact Award for her project Advancing ii’taa’poh’to’p: A Quantitative Comparison of Post-Secondary Indigenous Studies Programs This award is shaped around the Community Building pillar in Wherever Life Takes You a progressive plan to engage UCalgary alumni.  Wang’s project looked at the core attributes and practices within the Indigenous Studies discipline which she says she “hope[s] can inform program design at U of C and other institutions […] I was so grateful to have my presentation recognized and for my experience working in the Indigenous Communities and Organizations lab.” Roshanne Sihota was the winner of the Program in Undergraduate Research (PURE) Award, which is awarded to a student whose presentation demonstrates excellence in research conducted as a PURE project. Her video is available to watch here “My research project was about the social implications of gene editing technologies such as CRISPR,” she explained I was looking at how critical reflection is being used to address some of the social challenges that come with the advancements in gene editing.” Sihota said that she thinks the URS is a great opportunity to exemplify and promote undergrad research “This was my very first time presenting research so the process of putting together a presentation in kind of an ‘elevator pitch’ style was a valuable learning experience for me,” she said “I didn’t really go into the URS with any expectations I was more so just looking to gain some presentation experience so I was honestly really surprised when I won an award Mostly I was just happy because it made me feel like I got the ‘story’ of my research to resonate with somebody.” Sihota added that she was “super impressed” by everyone’s presentations saying “there’s some truly special undergraduate research here at U of C huge props to the SU for being able to accommodate the URS virtually Even though things looked a bit different this year it was still an amazing learning experience and I’m grateful to have been able to participate.” The URS winners are listed on the SU’s website, and URS presentations are available on the SU’s YouTube channel to watch Tagged: , , , Use the Admin widget page to populate the sidebar Climate strikes have recently happened in several countries made possible by the Young Leaders for Environmental Action Federation (YLEAF) We were inspired by the person who started it all Greta Thunberg – a young Swedish girl who started protests in her country until she influenced the youth around the world students and teachers from STEFTI also took part in the event They made placards and showed it on the streets they also sent a letter to the Vice Mayor of Tacloban about the situation we must be cautious about these dangerous things that cause pollution and climate change Just because we are young doesn’t mean we can’t make a change Why be part of the pollution if we can be part of the solution These are the questions that we should ask ourselves question that relate to the current situation of our planet nowadays We must take action now because if not now Filipinos are enduring the worst impacts of climate change we brought open hearts—and what we learned from their quiet strength changed everything Filipino communities welcome gov’ oral argument at ICJAO On the day of national mourning for victims of Severe Tropical Storm Trami (local name Kristine) Greenpeace reacted to oil and gas giant Shell’s recently reported $6.02bn in quarterly profits and called on President Marcos Jr to demand payment for loss and damages from the planet’s worst climate polluters Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" Please select which cookies you are willing to store These cookies will provide you a better experience of our website You will be able to hide the cookies acceptance banner and use the website features better The non-acceptance of these cookies will give you a cookie-free experience These cookies help improving the performance of Greenpeace.org They are set to collect data such as how long users stay on a page or which links are clicked This helps us make better content based on your experience navigating the website High-resolution mesh from the ordnance survey database Don't forget...
