Shasta County's longest-running sheriff “His whole life was law enforcement,” Balma said "He had no frame of reference for having an artistic child.” Balma spent the first 15 years of his career on stage in the Bay Area and the next 22 years as a character actor in Hollywood His resume includes television roles on "Friends," "Malcolm in the Middle," "Grey’s Anatomy," "Superstore" and "Grace and Frankie."  He’s most often recognized for the role of genial accounting manager Barney on "Parks and Recreation:" A boss who lavishes praise on employees and throws company pizza parties. The role The ventilation system is borderline deafening, but it's got big windows and great natural light.       "It's a good, probably 35-foot ceiling here, so it gives me a chance to work on them," he said. "Them" are the first three of 10 portraits for the “Women of Faith” project. These are women from the Bible, the Koran and the Torah, the great books of the three Abrahamic religions. I did not want to make them look like it is all a sunny day because we kind of know what happened,” Balma laughed. “They didn’t stay in the garden.” The paintings are close to 20 feet tall. Balma needs a scissors lift to reach the higher levels .  Mark Balma paints a 20-foot-tall portrait of Hagar as part of his Women of Faith project in Minneapolis on March 11. Balma has been painting inside of an undeveloped atrium in uptown with 35-foot ceilings offered to him by a friend.Evan Frost | MPR NewsNext to Eve, Balma is, on this day, working on a portrait of Hagar. She was second wife to Abraham, an enslaved woman who bore the prophet's children when his first wife, Sarah, was initially unable to have a child of her own.   "So her first son Ishmael was born, and here she is being visited in the desert by an angel" said Balma, standing before the second work. Muslim tradition holds the prophet Mohammed is a direct descendant of Ishmael.  The third image is a group portrait of Abraham, Sarah, with their son Isaac, born to Sarah when she was 90, as well as Hagar and Ishmael.   The pictures are destined for the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Terni, Italy, about 40 miles outside Rome. The pastor there is an American and approached Balma, a Minneapolis native internationally known for his portraiture, to create frescoes after a renovation. The priest also asked Balma to suggest a theme. "Of course, the church is the Immaculate Conception Church and I said: Why not dedicate them to women?" Balma said. “There has never been a cycle of frescoes dedicated to women like this, ever,” he said “So, it adds something new to the art in the church and also brings something back, old, from history, as the use of frescoes.”  As he embarked on the project, Balma sought advice from a multifaith committee which included Rabbi Marcia Zimmerman of Temple Israel in Minneapolis.  "My first thought is always the fact that he is not a woman," she laughs.  She gave Balma a collection of women's commentary on the weekly Torah portions, which are the foundation of Jewish worship services. “A deeper understanding can only add to the process,” she said. He also received advice from a Muslim perspective from Nadia Mohamed, a global religions professor at Minneapolis Community and Technical college. She is delighted the project examines common faith roots and the role of women now and into the future.  "We all know that we belong to Abraham, and from Abraham, came Judaism, Christianity and Islam,” she said. “Because men fail to bring us together, women, I think Muslim women, Christian women, Jewish women should bring us together and try to change."  Paintbrushes used by Mark Balma throughout his career sit on a table near where he is working on his Women of Faith project in Minneapolis in March.Evan Frost | MPR NewsThis project poses challenges, not least that it's happening at a time when people are very conscious of how people are depicted. Balma said that is why he researched his subjects so deeply. “I want to make these women look real for today,” Balma said. “And to feel real, like they could walk off the wall.” Balma represents the women at different times of life. Eve is middle-aged, Hagar is young and Sarah is old.   Balma has also had to wrestle with logistical challenges. Remember: These are frescoes.    Fresco is the art of painting on wet plaster freshly applied to a wall. So how can Balma be creating frescoes in Minneapolis for walls almost 5,000 miles away? Well, by using an ancient Greek technique, that's how.  The Greeks didn't want to send skilled artisans far from Athens as travel in ancient times could be risky. So Balma says they learned to paint frescoes using lime-based paint on muslin sail-cloth which could be rolled up and delivered to a distant site.   A mirror reflects painter Mark Balma using a scissor lift to work on one of the installments in his Women of Faith project in Minneapolis on Thursday, March 11, 2021. Three of the nearly 20-foot paintings will be hung in a church in Italy.Evan Frost | MPR News"And then they glued these to the wall with a lime and cheese glue," said Balma, "So they became incorporated into the plaster." "You ever had ricotta, or cottage cheese? It's that slurry kind of thing and you mix that with lime," he said. Pandemic allowing, Balma will install the first three pictures in Italy this summer. He'll complete the rest of the pictures over the following two years in Italy.  Mohamed said she has friends there who have offered to keep an eye on the project for her.  Zimmerman goes a step further. She said a sanctuary filled with images of women is very powerful. "I have been in a lot of churches in my career. I have preached in a lot of churches. And I thought to myself 'I want to preach there. I want to give a sermon in that space,'" she said But in the meantime, Balma has many miles, and many, many brushstrokes to go.  Text description provided by the architects. Stone’s uniqueness and discipline surface into crafted forms of sculptural poise, a clear sense of endurance and vitality, as well as gentle self-assurance, placing it as a consequential partaker in the evolving landscape of architecture Vals stone ends up as one of the protagonists aspiring “to showcase the potential and the exceptional quality of Vals stone with unique manufacturing techniques and applications,” as Kengo Kuma & Associates (KKAA) shares employed 60,000 slabs of it most poetically and exquisitely confident architectural delights with stone From a distance, Vals, with its houses crowned with stone-tiled shingle roofs gives off a remarkable appearance of stones floating above the valley—this visual was taken as a primary reference for Haus Balma, where KKAA attempted to capture and emulate this within the details of the Swiss architecture is designed to echo the surrounding nature and the architectural language of the village,” they recall A calm, composed alchemy of textures gives rise to a mature and hybrid expression defining the stone architecture which is also referred to as the Truffer Stone A.G owing to its clients—the Truffer company process extracted natural stone in Vals processing them in a local factory for its subsequent application across various architectural elements including roofs the Vals Stone manufacturer Truffer Stone A.G commissioned Kengo Kuma & Associates a brief for its new headquarters and showroom in the country minus ‘any specific purpose’ and sans ‘any spatial program to implement.’ On how its programming was deliberated on and finalised in the face of such a brief, Yuki Ikeguchi partner in charge/ executive vice president “We developed the spatial programme through a series of dialogues during the design process but we got to take part in many family meetings and gatherings to learn about their ways of life and business I believe the close dialogue with the family made our design special We made many trips to Vals during the design and construction and that makes me feel nostalgic when I think about it now.” Haus Balma, in regional terms, refers to “a void, a space between a piece of rock, and the sloping land where animals and humans can be sheltered for comfort and safety in a mountain,” explains the project's design team led by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and Ikeguchi “It is our hope that the project would grow to be organic to its land and become a place for comfort and nesting for the family and the community,” they continue “We derived an architectural form to echo the surroundings and to create the spatial experience as interpretation, and extension of natural settings in Vals,” Ikeguchi shares with STIR. “We drew inspiration from the vernacular architecture with pitched stone roofs The roofscape in the backdrop of the narrow valley creates specific scenery Our building’s form is derived from the reinterpretation of this pitched roof language Eaves following the shape of the roofs are expressed at each floor level to be perceived,” she adds One of the project’s most intentionally crafted features is its seemingly levitant, almost mystical facade design articulated through slabs of slender stone and wood this exterior envelope design was developed from the traditional eaves with rough split stone slabs drawing them down in a manner resembling a screen delightful contrast of stone appearing almost weightless our design intention [was] to create openness with more sense of transparency to take in incredible views of the mountain as a part of [the] interior backdrop,” they elaborate The clear incorporation of Vals quartzite stone in the contextual design which is ‘the’ protagonist spelling the exterior as well as the interior “We wanted to create an architecture that exhibited the full potential of Vals quartzite The exterior screen was one of the more elaborate designs in the structure We designed it with a suspension structure where the stone is thinly sliced and attached to tensioned stainless steel cables Metal fixing pieces were engineered and designed to fit within the thickness of the stone plate so that only the cables and stones were visible A sense of lightness was achieved in contrast to the image of stone being heavy The whole façade became quite transparent with a delicate expression of stone being achieved They are laminated together so to gain stiffness and elasticity to absorb movement This detail was considered for safety measures to hold it together,” Ikeguchi explains Hauz Balma’s interior design too as deliberately and pleasingly as its skin does—here are seemingly impressed and composed to recreate the sensation the devised height of the architectural volume is successful in linking all programs through stone As Ikeguchi shares with STIR, intricate triangular spaces express the insides of the Truffer Stone A.G. Headquarters, which are structured and organised around a central, linear void, where a staircase design runs diagonally and vertically through its entire length the staircase was provided with an exaggerated reminiscent of the quarry that is essential and fundamental for the Truffer family,” Ikeguchi reiterates The skylight here is designed with a minimum supporting structure to accentuate the stone texture and intended sensation of being in the stone crack categorically directing only determined bands of natural light to enter “The space is symbolic of the quarry being the core and the foundation of the family work their invention and creation,” Ikeguchi relays The first and ground floor host office functions “where workers can enjoy views all around at the elevated level,” she adds The second and third levels are employed as private residences “where calmer and more intimate scales under the sloped roof can be experienced,” she says Here, the screen façade is composed of stone and timber plates in a mixed pattern. “The portion of the stone plates in the screen is more in the lower levels, and it would gradually decrease at the higher level with more timber plates. At the residential upper levels, one would feel the texture of wood more, seeing it from the interior. The timber that we used here is larch as it is commonly used for the surrounding buildings to merge in tone with Vals quartz stone,” Ikeguchi conveys to STIR A rare intervention, the contextual architecture discloses care and attention to detail integrating stone as an almost living entity: flying Attesting to its properties and colour palette the building blends pleasantly into the local environment of the alpine town the primary stone materiality of Haus Balma elevates the project into a composed marvel that respects its site solid material that promises to endure as it matures In more than half a decade of dedicated writing and research fueled by her education and experience in architecture ideating as well as aligning and editing content for STIR’s design and architecture verticals She also edits and oversees the day-to-day editorial operations for its launch platform Her keen interest in what demands design and creative plurality at large drives her professional pursuits She often tunes into a variety of media centred especially on maligned women true crime and what we get wrong about history From vernacular knowledge to modern sustainability Middle Eastern pavilions serve as living archives of architectural thought offering fresh frameworks for global adoption STIR engages with the curators of the Togo Oman and Qatar pavilions—debuting at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025—on representation the book presents a fictional story depicting algorithms exercising control over humans and how this affects the built environment Tipnis shares how the toolbox democratises the practice of restoration via DIY resources to repair tangible urban heritage made of common building materials Exclusive preview for subscribers. Reprinted from "Street Data: A Next-Generation Model for Equity, Pedagogy, and School Transformation," by Shane Safir and Jamila Dugan The BALMA project was a social experiment where three teachers—one white (Shane) Rex de Guia)—linked arms to pull back the curtain on educational inequity and empower our students as changemakers our students developed college literacy and critical thinking skills; wrote incisive essays about the opportunity gaps they were witnessing Paolo Freire and bell hooks; and created reflective art pieces about who society was molding them to be versus who they wanted to become they designed and led a community forum with over two hundred people from San Francisco and Marin counties to share their findings and attended school board meetings to demand structural change they developed a profound sense of agency by connecting to each other and to something larger than themselves None of them could have been captured in a “metric.” If we are serious about creating equitable school systems we need to stop measuring children on norm-referenced tests and start measuring what matters: student agency Agency is the idea that people have the capacity to take action and make informed decisions based on a growing base of knowledge nor does it flourish in a traditional classroom where the teacher is positioned as a content expert dishing out knowledge It emerges in a learning space where power is distributed and children are intellectually and emotionally nourished Let’s think about agency in relationship to four domains: identity you must first feel that your core identity—your ways of being Tunison (2007) notes that “lack of identity and low self-esteem” can damage the learning spirit—an Indigenous concept that spirits travel with individuals and guide their learning providing inspiration and the unrealized potential to be who we are Author and founder of the abolitionist teaching movement Bettina Love defines spirit murdering in schools as “the denial of inclusion framed as the ability to build knowledge and demonstrate understanding as a learner students must be able to show what they know in nontraditional ways Pencil-and-paper tests not only trigger acute anxiety for many learners they also lack the nuance and texture of street data they are micro-versions of standardized tests that function like satellite data inside the classroom Why did the student solve the problem the way they did How were they feeling when they took the test What happened earlier that day or morning that may have impacted their performance create an infrastructure for students to explore Students become agents in their own learning rather than consumers of curriculum when our BALMA students presented their findings to a community forum of two hundred people they enjoyed an authentic audience to share their learning with This held them accountable and raised the stakes on their work in the best possible way I was asked to create a graduate capstone project for seniors My seniors would be the first class to present and defend their capstones to a committee of teachers I vividly recall Alberto—a young man who had left behind a life of stealing and reselling Honda vehicles to become a budding scholar—presenting his capstone in a beautiful guayabera shirt translating each part into Spanish for his proud mamá I was Alberto’s advisor and English teacher so I had the privilege to coach him through the process and when the committee announced that he had passed his capstone He felt an overwhelming sense of agency in having shared his knowledge publicly in ways that honored his family The third component of mastery is belonging and I am seen and loved here.” Belonging emerges in a classroom characterized by deep and caring relationships Author Zaretta Hammond frames relationships as the onramp to learning particularly for marginalized students who may have little reason to trust their educators (Hammond Herb Kohl describes the phenomenon of “willed not learning,” whereby students resist being intellectually vulnerable in the face of teachers who don’t authentically care about them (Kohl Deep learning can only happen in a classroom where a child feels a sense of belonging Despite piles of research on the importance of relationships and connectedness to the neuroscience of learning many Black and brown students experience an acute lack of belonging when they enter their school buildings one out of every three California students cannot identify a single caring adult on campus I have worked with districts where that number rose to 50 percent 30 percent of African American students and 22 percent of Latinx students in California enter high school only to drop out before graduating a data point replicated in high-poverty regions across the nation We have a crisis of alienation in our schools driven at the highest levels by the insidious messages of satellite data in effect: “You are not achieving on these measures; therefore you don’t really belong to this academic community a gap to be filled.” It hurts my heart to write those words because I know that so many young people experience school this way Fostering a sense of belonging does not mean plastering our classrooms and school walls with ethnically diverse posters and inspirational sayings or celebrating “diversity days”—the so-called Heroes and Holidays approach (Lee it demands rigorous attention to systemic racism and the micro-interactions that characterize a student’s passage through the school day This is why shadowing a student delivers such powerful street data: It gives us a ground-level view of the ways in which children are included or just plain invisible in their learning environments agency is about nourishing students’ sense of efficacy—a feeling that “I can make a difference here.” Collective teacher efficacy the shared belief among teachers in their ability to positively affect students has emerged in John Hattie’s research as the number one influence on student learning (Hattie For our purposes of assessing student agency efficacy means the learner’s ability to set an intention and produce a desired result and it is absolutely critical to healing from and transforming oppression Scholar Shawn Ginwright describes the importance of helping young people take “loving action by collectively responding to political decisions and practices that can exacerbate trauma” (Ginwright or building a resource for your community vests students with a sense of power and control over their lives which research has shown is one of the most significant factors in restoring well-being for marginalized groups A Utica woman on probation for dealing meth is back in trouble for allegedly dealing cocaine Thirty-five-year-old Jessica Balma was booked Wednesday in the La Salle County Jail She allegedly sold cocaine to members of the Tri-DENT task force on Wednesday while in Streator Balma was wanted on a warrant for missing a court date Email notifications are only sent once a day Home » German Design Award 2020 goes to Balma STEPPS shelving units Polish office furniture manufacturer Balma wins a German Design Award for their Balma Stepps modular shelving system. The race here, for District 45, is one of three in this county alone, and among the 10 statewide, that the Cook Political Report has listed as “competitive.” That means voters here will now help determine the political balance of a closely divided Congress The 45th District is “anyone’s election to win or lose,” said Jodi Balma a Fullerton College political science professor Steel won her seat in 2020, defeating first-term Democratic Rep. Harley Rouda when Republicans had gained a marked registration advantage in the district But redistricting has completely reshaped the area Steel is now running to represent No longer dominated by the more conservative the new 45th District includes more middle- and working-class areas — it stretches as far east as Brea and includes Cerritos in Los Angeles County And Democrats now have a 5-point registration advantage here it’s a notably diverse district — nearly 37% of residents are Asian American And it includes large immigrant and refugee communities from Vietnam “I think [Steel] reflects the old district,” said Balma who has tracked OC politics for more than two decades the district has fundamentally shifted so that very few people who will be voting in November have had Michelle Steel as an incumbent congresswoman.” Chen has a formidable challenge ahead of him Even in a new district, Steel is well known in Orange County — she served on the county’s Board of Supervisors and has been active in local GOP politics for decades Chen, on the other hand, is campaigning on protecting abortion rights, gun control and access to health care “We have to make sure that we protect health care that’s your decision,” he said Balma said those policy differences could help Chen “It will depend on how the campaigns frame the question And so if Michelle Steel can frame the question that she is a moderating vote against a Biden/AOC [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] agenda Chen would be wise to hold Steel accountable for her votes against contraception and same-sex marriage both of which she called “extreme positions in Orange County.” Steel says she aims to highlight her votes against tax increases and government spending and her support for law enforcement and harsher criminal penalties she says — not just Republicans — are angry this year “Usually NPP [no party preference] people are kind of quiet about who they’re going to vote [for],” she said I need somebody who can take care of the economy he’s not trying to shy away from those pocketbook issues but instead is seeking to reframe them and focus on the real culprits “I want to make sure that we bring down costs there’s a lot of price-gouging going on right now They made $30 billion in profits in the last quarter That’s much more than they ever made before while we’re paying record-high prices at the pump.” who was volunteering at the National Night Out event in Westminster where she’s lived for more than 50 years told Steel that she and others in her church congregation were praying for more members of Congress like her “We need more like her because we have far too many that are destroying our country right now,” Eames said “And we’re praying for certain things — one of them is we are highly concerned about the children And the homosexual agenda in the schools — all of that.” Diana Tran was receptive to Chen’s message on efforts to curb gun violence “I homeschool my kids right now and we started homeschooling because of the pandemic hearing what’s going on in the community — it’s really really hard to integrate ourselves back into society,” she told Chen at the police station event One thing both candidates like talking about: their own immigrant family stories Steel was born in South Korea and grew up in Japan; Chen’s parents are Taiwanese and moved to the Midwest before Chen was born Both are hoping those backgrounds will help them connect with voters in a district that’s one-third Asian including one of the largest Vietnamese communities in the state But Balma said each candidate likely appeals to different segments of the diverse Asian American community here And the Asian American voters are not even a monolith within the different ethnicities Not all Vietnamese Americans vote the same way Not all Koreans feel the same way,” she said “[Chen and Steel] are generationally different Their immigration stories are generationally different.” Balma also noted that younger Vietnamese voters tend to skew Democratic while their parents and grandparents still identify with the GOP — in some cases because of the party’s historic anti-communist stance an issue that for decades has loomed large over politics in the county Among the candidates’ few overlapping positions is their mutual support for Taiwanese independence and their outspoken opposition to China’s leadership But Balma wonders whether the national Republican Party’s recent shift even further to the right — including its embrace of autocratic world leaders like Hungarian President Viktor Orbán — could hurt conservative candidates in Orange County do Vietnamese voters still believe that the Republicans are against communism when you see them inviting and cozying up to dictators and fascists?” she said “I don’t know how that plays.” this one will come down to who’s paying attention — and actually turns out to vote An earlier version of this story misidentified Jodi Balma’s employer To learn more about how we use your information, please read our privacy policy. Raphael Sonenshein and Jodi Balma presented on political races happening in Los Angeles County and Orange County and the importance this election has on local residents Political science experts encouraged youth voter turnout and discussed the importance of local politics during the midterm elections at a panel hosted by Pi Sigma Alpha on Thursday night at the Titan Student Union The All Politics is Local program is one of five offered by Cal State Fullerton designed to educate students about local politics in Los Angeles and Orange counties One of the two experts on the panel was Raphael J the executive director of the Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs at Cal State Los Angeles and former CSUF political science professor a professor of political science at Fullerton College a leading commentator on Orange County politics and the host of the “A Slice of Orange” podcast Each panelist discussed the political races happening in their cities of expertise and explained the importance and effect these races have on residents They said most voters tend to not pay as much attention to local elections despite their importance the secretary and treasurer of Pi Sigma Alpha said it was important to discuss the political races in Los Angeles due to its proximity to Orange County “A lot of the policies in Los Angeles kind of trickle down It's like a diffusion effect between us,” Ward said sheriff’s race and the generational change in voter demographics in Los Angeles Balma focused on addressing the elections of the school board community college board and board of supervisors Both Sonenshein and Balma said it was important for young voters to participate in elections because their vote has the power to change what happens at a local and national level for people to listen to what decisions you want to be made and how you want to prioritize those decisions,” Balma said “Those social problems that we have are decided by the people on the ballot.”  Sonenshein and Balma emphasized the importance of the younger generation paying attention to local elections “It's an absolutely critical time to get the attention of young people to participate,” Sonenshein said “Sometimes the early returns go to the older folks young people are paying attention and this is a year to really pay attention Balma said having forums such as All Politics is Local is vital because of how complex voting can be and if you haven't paid attention to local politics it's hard to really peel back the layers that are there and if you're just getting information from mailers and ads Balma advised those in attendance to visit websites such as Voter’s Edge California and League of Women Voters to receive more information on candidates and who is endorsing them Ward said that it was important to have these programs because of how imperative it is for the CSUF students to be informed about local politics said the program was insightful and enjoyed learning about the local political races from experts “They're experts so I trust their insights probably a bit more than I would like if I were looking at social media and stuff But I think it's really cool to learn about the complexities and nuances of voting,” Chen said Votes for the midterm election have already begun to roll in Los Angeles and Orange County Balma said it is crucial for people to vote so that they can say they had a voice in the election “It's too important not to show up and we are at a precipice “What do you want the ending to this story to be what do you want history to say about the 2022 election and hopefully it's that young people showed up in major numbers and voiced their choice.”  there are no recent results for popular videos there are no recent results for popular commented articles SOUTH RANGE — A fire at a South Range house Wednesday night caused extensive smoke damage but is not expected to result in the loss of the building A passerby spotted the fire at the intersection of Trimountain and Globe avenues about 7:20 p.m. “It was a well-attacked effort from the volunteer fire department,” Balma said “We got here right away and knocked it down and the structure’s still standing.” Balma said damage to the house should be able to be repaired The residents had not been home at the time of the fire The cause of the fire was unknown Wednesday High winds Wednesday did not cause complications departments were kept on scene longer due to it being an old house with “walls built on walls,” he said South Range and Adams Township fire departments responded to the scene along with Mercy EMS and Upper Peninsula Power Co Departments began clearing the scene shortly after 9 p.m IRON MOUNTAIN — The Upper Peninsula jobless rate rose to 8.4% in February Copyright © 2025 Ogden News Publishing of Michigan Hanoi -
