Bad luck is definitely haunting Paul Penhoët in this start to the 2025 season
Ruled out of the sprint on the first stage of the Pays de la Loire Region Tour by a mechanical problem on Tuesday
the young sprinter from Groupama-FDJ was forced to abandon in stage 2 on Wednesday after a crash with about 40 kilometres to go
Tom Donnenwirth secured his position in the first group on the uphill finish in Beaupréau-en-Mauges
Yvon Caër’s men set off with ambition on Wednesday for the second stage of the Pays de la Loire Region Tour
with a last kilometre at 4% looming at the finish
Paul Penhoët hoped to take revenge for his misfortunes in La Baule the day before
things unfortunately went bad for the young French sprinter
as the peloton had just entered the Beaupréau-en-Mauges’ circuit
Paul Penhoët hit the tarmac and was only able to get back up after a few minutes
“He collided with a competitor on the handlebars and crashed heavily on his knees,” Yvon Caër explained
“It’s a series of unfortunate events for him
We all hoped that his luck would finally come
we hit rock bottom… It’s a huge disappointment
I hope it’s nothing too serious and that he’ll be able to get back on his bike fairly quickly
As the young man was taken to the hospital
his teammates were down to five for the final of the stage
“Paul’s withdrawal really disrupted us at first
then I asked Rémi and Tom to follow the moves,” Yvon added
one group went away without us on the last lap
then the peloton slowed down because the teams weren’t really organized anymore
When I saw there were 30 seconds with eight kilometres to go
I asked Rémi to sacrifice himself to make sure it would come back together
then Tom made the effort on the final climb for Matt
Matt realized during the sprint that he was running out of gas
but we took responsibility and were the most prominent team in the final.” In the end
while Tom Donnenwirth crossed the line in 28th place
“Tom is still in the mix for the overall and we’ll see how it goes tomorrow,” concluded Yvon
We’re extremely disappointed with how the day went
Abergavenny Town Council liaised with Chairman of Abergavenny Twinning Association
John Prosser to organise a delegation to participate in a Town Festival and Youth project in Munsingen
The delegation included: twinning enthusiasts
A delegation of five “Twinners” plus ten Royal Air Force Air Cadets and two supervisors from the Abergavenny Branch travelled for the festivities with the Cadets staying longer to engage in youth camp projects with peers from twin towns
Although Abergavenny is not directly twinned with Munsingen
both are twinned with Beaupreau and delegates often meet at joint events
a recent one being the successful trip to Beaupreau by Abergavenny Rhinos football club earlier this year
Mr Prosser commented: “Abergavenny Twinning Association continues to embrace the ethos of twinning where friends across different countries develop friendships and experience each other's cultures and everyday life
“This visit has culturally strengthened our relationship with Munsingen in Germany
It also gave the opportunity for student air cadets to participate in a European project.”
Councillor Kyle Jamie Eldridge one of those who attended
said: “The spirit of Abergavenny and Wales was in our hearts and we had the unique opportunity to have a crash course in international diplomacy
I am proud of our great Royal Air Force Cadets
as beyond the camaraderie that is quite often associated with young people today lies a very florescent silver lining of respect and tolerance of which I believe defines them as a generation.”
A spokesman for Royal Air Force Air Cadets at 2478 (Abergavenny) Squadron said: “Thank you for this wonderful opportunity
especially during the bike rides and working on youth projects with others who became good friends
A great big thank you from the RAF Air Cadets at 2478 (Abergavenny) Squadron.”

the French artist has installed nearly 90 sculptures across Colorado’s San Luis Valley
The San Luis Valley stretches 125 miles long and more than 65 miles wide
“It’s a mythical place,” says the 37-year-old artist Marguerite Humeau
a 160-acre plain populated by hammocks and abstract
“The closest cultural institution to [Orisons] is a U.F.O
Up since last July, Orisons is one of the largest pieces of land art ever made by a woman
and Humeau’s most ambitious project to date
Over three years—and with help from a team of 52 experts
and geomancers—she installed 84 sculptures in the valley
The larger sculptures are meant to look like sandhill cranes
or by various other names such as ‘skeleton’
and ‘lêkê’ in different regions
with flexible structures and affordable prices
showcasing their enduring popularity after 75 years in the market
Originating from a village named Les Sarraix in the Puy-de-Dôme region of Auvergne

Despite their simplicity and affordability
lêkê have evolved into a hallmark of Ivorian cultural heritage
They are widely embraced by individuals of all age groups
and are particularly prevalent during the rainy season
While global alternatives such as flip-flops have gained traction elsewhere
lêkê have retained their prominence in Ivory Coast as an essential accessory
They are regarded as a symbol of humility and are worn across various social demographics
lêkê became intertwined with the zouglou music movement in the 1990s
and later became associated with political activism
they have maintained their cultural significance
they have experienced a resurgence in popularity
particularly among rap stars and celebrities
solidifying their status as a lasting cultural icon
Lêkê have also become a symbol of street soccer culture in the country
They are favoured for their comfort and practicality
especially in informal games played on sandy pitches and in dusty alleys
While they may lack durability compared to professional soccer cleats
lêkê are seen as a source of pride among players
with worn-out soles considered badges of dedication to the sport

Abergavenny recently represented itself in its twin town of Beaupréau-en-Mauges, Maine-et-Loire in Western France; marking the strength of friendship between towns.
Representatives from Abergavenny, Vidreres (Spain) and Munsingen (Germany), came together in Beaupréau for the Europiad - a multi-day folk sports festival that offers opportunity to make and maintain international friendships.
The delegation from Abergavenny, which consisted of members from Abergavenny’s Twinning Association, Rhinos Football Club and Town Council, stood for the people of Abergavenny; bringing a bit of home to Beaupréau-en-Mauges.
Locals of Beaupréau last visited Abergavenny in 2018 before the Covid-19 Pandemic, which cemented the end of separation between the two towns.
The town Twinning movement started very soon after 1945, with the passionate support of mayors and citizens who vowed that Europe should never again be torn apart by war.
Although Twinning may seem like a “bygone” notion, the recent trip signified that Twinning is standing the test of time and going strong; building links and exchanges between individual towns and cities, bringing reconciliation and prosperity after years of conflict between nations.
Following the success of the event, John Prosser, Chairperson of the Abergavenny Twinning Association, said: “Thirty three years of twinning with Beaupréau and the friendship is still going strong as demonstrated by the warm reception received by the Welsh delegation!
“It was good to see teams from Wales, France, Germany, and Spain taking part and the exciting exchange of ideas for future events. We look forward to the next visit from Beaupréau.”
On the Rhinos’ involvement, Simon Mansfield, Secretary of the Abergavenny Rhinos Football Club, further added: “As a club we were honoured to be invited by Beaupréau to take part in their recent Olympiads event alongside clubs from Germany, Spain, France and Rhinos (Wales) to celebrate the Olympics being held in Paris this year.”
Abergavenny Rhinos Under 14s made the town proud, winning the Europiad; overcoming stiff competition from Germany, Spain and France.
“The youngsters who represented Abergavenny and Aber rhinos where absolutely first class throughout the trip and events,” Simon continued. “We are so proud that our Under 14s despite tough opposition won the event.
“The trip was a great success and it was a fantastic experience for all involved. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents and players who attended. Also thank you to Mayor Anne Wilde, the town councillors and members of the twinning committee for their support during the weekend.”
Abergavenny Town Councillor, Kyle Jamie Eldridge expressed his delight in the event. He said: “It was an honour to go to Beaupréau and go alongside a fantastic group of young people, who not only represented their town with enthusiasm and skill, but who made twinning stronger than ever by just being themselves.”
Pauline Dilay, one of the Beaupréau Twinning Organisers, fortified Kyle’s comment. She added: "Basically the experience was very exciting, we wanted to organise something for the youngsters of Beaupréau something they will never forget, around sports events and linguistic exchanges.
“It worked very well thanks to the enthusiasm of the clubs here in Beaupréau and the wonderful host families who were ready to follow us in this adventure.”.

Parts of the Abergavenny Beaupréau Twinning Association’s Welsh slate statute has been stolen.
The statute was unveiled in 2019 while the association celebrated thirty years of friendship together and was created by local sculptor Ben Jones and placed in Gabb Square.
Ben had cast cockerels and red kites made of lead pewter on the sides of the slate which have now been removed from the statue.
The theft has been reported to the police.
The chair of the Abergavenny Beaupréau Twinning Association, Judith Vicary, said: “This has caused great distress to the artist, and to the members of the Twinning Association, as this was a valuable creation given to the town, and much preparation, expense and devotion went into its making.
“It is disappointing to say the least that people who may live locally have been responsible for this mean crime.
“Maybe together with this publicity, the birds might be recognised somewhere and returned.”

With potential government reorganisation, Forest of Dean contemplates joining Wales to avoid being the 'poor relation' in Gloucestershire.
WITH plans for a government shake-up in England which could see Monmouthshire’s close neighbour the Forest of Dean lose its own council there have been calls for Foresters to stand up for themselves and consider joining Wales”.
There are fears the district is being treated as the “poor relation” in discussions on council reorganisation in Gloucestershire and Forest of Dean District Councillors are calling on civic chiefs to not be afraid in standing up for the area which “has a long history of making its voices heard”.
They do not want so see history repeated in “being put upon and shut out of the way”.
Councillor Shaun Stammers (L, Mitcheldean, Ruardean and Drybrook) asked if a referendum could be held on independence from Gloucestershire and joining Wales. “I’m voting”, he said.
“Next we should have a motion to declare independence from Gloucestershire and have a referendum to see if the people want to be part of Wales.”
Councillor Tim Gwilliam (Progressive Independents), the former leader of Forest of Dean District Council, said the area “cannot be left to be the poor relation again”.
“I’m pleased the leader, cabinet and officers are taking a forward thinking view from the Forest of Dean. We can’t be left just to be left to be the poor relations again. There’s an element of that going on.
Councillor John Francis (I, Longhope and Huntley) said the district has a long history of standing up for itself and making its voices heard.
“We also have a history of being put upon and shut out of the way,” he said.
“We have got to look at this as an opportunity to be the Forest of Dean District.
“If we don’t like what other people are doing, let’s stand up for ourselves and say we don’t like it.
“We don’t think it benefits us, our ward members and the people who live here. Let’s not be afraid to put our point on it and stand by what we believe.”
Councillor Julia Gooch (Progressive Independents, Newent and Taynton) said it was “very disgraceful” that MPs across the county jumped in and wrote letters” supporting council shake up proposals “without even consulting the public”.
Council leader Adrian Birch (G, Tidenham) said the council should not support any of the three proposals at this stage.
He said they were being “rather forced” to sign the letter and said the there needs to be more public involvement on the proposals.
“We should see what happens over the course of the next six to nine months,” he said.
“We have to provide a further document in November which works up what we as a group of councils have agreed.
“There’s a strong need to involve the public in that decision process. I’m sure we all have strong reservations about why this is taking place. We need to be shown to be taking action.
“But at the same time we should not forget our heritage and the very nature of what we stand for.”
