I was really nervous. It was the first time that we were telling  politicians what we thought — and what needed to be done. That’s when a new era began. That’s when I heard about the Escazú Agreement an international treaty that aims to grant rights to people like me so that the authorities hear our voices the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) opened a competition so that young people would spread the word about the Escazú Agreement in the region so that more countries would sign it I put myself forward and the ECLAC chose me and four other young people from Latin America and the Caribbean but I told myself that the best place to start was at home I contacted all of the people that I thought could help me and we became a movement of 70 people we managed to make the Escazú Agreement an issue that almost everybody knew about The movement made so much noise that many people decided to go out into the streets and demand that the Escazú Agreement be signed We managed to convince Congress to call on the president to sign the agreement We bombarded the Chilean foreign minister with emails demanding that he sign on 2021 was also a very important year for the movement because presidential and parliamentary elections took place in Chile It was a great opportunity to [ensure that] the next government [would] sign the agreement We had the idea of printing a page with a pledge that read: “I as the candidate for the presidency of ‘X’ party We held many meetings and we pressured all the candidates to sign The Congress members of all the political parties also signed the pledge the first thing he did was sign the Escazú Agreement We know that the Escazú Agreement is now a law we now have environmental lawyers working to make sure that what it states is implemented The agreement is based on the premise of environmental democracy and it is drawn up so that citizens have more rights and can raise their voices in a more effective way We know there is still a lot to be done for the agreement to be truly effective each aspect of the agreement is implemented we want to provide effective protection to the environmental defenders through the creation of legal instruments that contribute to their protection we aim to ensure that Chile has greater environmental transparency Escazu Chile’s ultimate aim is to make sure that each Chilean — in whichever part of the country — knows exactly what the quality of the air is that they are breathing and the quality of the water they are drinking we want to work on the theme of environmental democracy We want more mechanisms for citizen participation in environmental matters We want more environmental education in Chile’s most polluted regions — not the typical environmental education about having to take care of water or recycle paper but an environmental education based on human rights and young people in those polluted areas what their rights are and how they can exercise them so that those rights are never violated we want to improve the system of environmental justice in Chile by 2026 Story as told to Adam Critchley; Register here that fateful day in 1994 when South Africa had its first truly democratic election but I remember to this day how palpably you could feel the peace in the air no matter where you were in South Africa on that day There had been so much fear mongering up to that day about how the country would turn to violence and yet the exact opposite occurred We were filled with hope and expectation as a result That election would not bring in a new era free from the legacy of Apartheid; it would instead usher in a new era of Apartheid an Apartheid that would encompass so many more South Africans than the first ever had Just last week I was in Cape Town with my family showing an American exchange student the beauty that South Africa has to offer we try and visit Cape Town every few years as its beauty has historically been such a relief from the squalor and decay of Johannesburg on this occasion we were all struck by the decay that has now This is not political or municipal decay as we see in all other eight provinces It felt as if the pervasive corruption and poverty of the rest of South Africa had now pressed through the veneer that had so effectively covered the Western Cape for so long Read more: The first 30 years of Apartheid as a mirror for ANC rule: Andrew Kenny the spread of homeless people and the almost complete lack of new construction in the city's streets we would have presented to us the spectacle of the African Nation Congress' (ANC) new Apartheid put on display As we stood on Camps Bay beach we watched as some of the world's most expensive motor cars emerged from some of the country's most expensive houses and paraded for us down the boulevard displaying black South Africans dressed in the finest clothes money can buy adorned in large and seemingly very expensive jewelry and hair dos passing their destitute fellow countrymen on each side of the road using them as valets to care for their cars as they entered some of the most expensive restaurants available in Cape Town understood that they now lived in a new Apartheid it is just a far more extensive and all-inclusive version of the original The original National Party (NP) version of Apartheid (Translated into English loosely as "Separation") aimed to separate blacks from whites The ANC's new Apartheid aims to separate black and white South Africans from them from the political elite their families and their friends and their connections (henceforth referred to as "Comrades" – their favoured term) a working example of George Orwell's Animal Farm – "All animals are equal But some animals are more equal than others" As we head towards this year's national elections we have naturally been surrounded by the realities of our countries current conditions as the Democratic Alliance (DA) phrased it in their latest advert But what struck me on that beach that evening was that we have not actually been told the truth about why we are burning We are not burning because the ANC has plundered our country and overwhelmed our economy with expensive We are burning because they have created a new and far more extensive Apartheid Read more: Ramaphosa pledges to end 'Health-Care Apartheid' with controversial NHI bill Under this new Apartheid black South Africans have been separated from the black political elite and their comrades by bribing them with grants removing from the constitution their ability to own land and implementing labour laws that make it impossible for them to be employed But now they have expanded this separation they inherited from the NP to include white South Africans in the above as well whites are now used as the scape goat for all the evils incurred by the ANC My children have been taught in school that they are racist simply for being white They have been told they have no place in the South African tertiary education system and are therefore often forced to look for this education outside of South Africa As early teens they know already that because they are white it is very unlikely they will be able to find employment in South Africa and if they do they will be extremely limited in their career progression simply because of their skin colour know that if they are to believe what the ANC and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) pour down their throats every day build or innovate in South Africa will ultimately be taken from them in this new Apartheid under the auspices of Black Economic Employment that what they saw on Camps Bay boulevard that evening would never be something they could have or do under this new Apartheid that all South Africans of all races find themselves under this new Apartheid; an ANC and potentially EFF-led Apartheid We are told that we must blame white people for all our countries problems and we are taught that we should hate blacks because they have taken and will take everything from us while vilifying us in the process It's a simultaneously wicked and brilliant plan to ensure we as black and white South Africans never turn our eyes on our new slave masters but fight each other in the pits over the scraps for their benefit Read more: How Rupert fought with PW & Verwoerd over Apartheid I realised that evening on Camps Bay beach just how extensively we as South Africans have been lied to over the last 3 decades by the ANC and perhaps more vocally by the EFF: All South Africans outside the political elite and their comrades are Any "revolution" required is a unified black and white "revolution" against this new system and those that control it As was so physically evident that evening on Camps Bay's boulevard the vast if not all the real wealth in South Africa land and power has long since shifted into the hands of the black political elite and their comrades We live under a single party (Or perhaps parties unified in their philosophy – think ANC and EFF) totalitarian state that cares only about keeping all the power and wealth in its own hands and keeping the rest of us fighting with each other in the name of race This year's election will arguably be remembered as about as important as that first election in 1994 This is so because it will either permanently sign off on this new Apartheid or it will usher in a new and third era into South Africa's modern history Will that new era be any better than the previous two Will we even ever be given the chance to know it's time all South Africans of all races unify despite their colour and the beliefs they may have as a result of the lies they have been told to end Apartheid in South Africa finally and usher in true freedom at last Brendan Benfield is a registered Chartered Accountant and a visiting fellow of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) 2011 at home following his courageous battle with Johnny's last request was that is family and friends know how much he loved them Faiza Baghoth and John Hewitt in Benfield Valley The council has pulled the plug on plans to build more than 100 homes in Benfield Valley in response to overwhelming public opposition More than 300 responses have been received by Brighton and Hove City Council since the plans were submitted by a consortium of two companies Benfield Property Ltd and Benfield Investments Ltd The site is understood to be held on a lease by Benfield Investments which had been working with Hollybrook Homes is due to go before the council’s Planning Committee in just under a fortnight – on Wednesday 2 April Among the hundreds of objectors are the three Labour councillors for Hangleton and Knoll ward – Faiza Baghoth regardless of the decision of the Planning Committee the council was unwilling to grant its consent as the landlord this is because a covenant has restricted the use of the land for leisure and recreation since it was gifted by the Sainsbury family more than 30 years ago They gave the land to what was then Hove Borough Council when the superstore was built at the southern end of the valley by the old entrance to West Hove Golf Club has also highlighted the potential loss of ecology the council’s cabinet member for sports and recreation wrote to David Godden at Benfield Property the current lease restricts use of the land to outdoor recreational and leisure purposes “And the council as landowner would need to consent to the implementation of the development where this is outside the terms of the lease “We have not received an application from you in this respect While the council is keen to facilitate the building of housing in Brighton and Hove as landlord we are not minded to agree to vary the lease relating to this land “The site is of great importance to the city and our residents and we are keen to continue to preserve and maintain the use of the whole of the site in its current form for the benefit of our residents.” has turned out to support campaigners at the site in the past the community and myself always said that this area is a valuable social leisure and outdoor space so I’m over the moon that there is a legal document which proves this “Thank you to all the residents who have contacted us and stood firm with us on this issue.” Councillor Hewitt said: “We understand the importance that Benfield Valley has to our community so this decision will help secure keeping Benfield green.” Councillor Grimshaw said: “During the election campaign we made it clear that we didn’t support building on Benfield and that will always be our stance.” Councillor Baghoth said: “While we know that there is a need for housing in the city Benfield is not the place for it to go as we would be losing a valuable amenity.” The council reluctantly allocated some housing on the site in the City Plan under pressure to meet the huge demand for new homes in Brighton and Hove unsuccessfully tried to prevent the land from being earmarked for housing But the Greens said that a government planning inspector had in effect given the council no choice but to include Benfield Valley and a number of other urban fringe sites as potentially suitable for housing When Labour won the three seats in Hangleton and Knoll they did so having pledged – like their Conservative opponents – to fight any housing plans in what was described as a vital green lung Does Angela Rayner know that Peter Kyle Starmeroid has gone off and malfunctioned I thought Labour now accused anyone of blocking planning applications of being NIMBYs but it seems they don’t actually like it when it’s their own back yard Pleased for residents that there’s been an about turn but can’t help but note the hypocrisy of Labour politicians pointing fingers at others opposing planning applications elsewhere and name-calling (Nimby feels like Keir Starmer’s favourite word he uses it so much) How did it get this far when the land use does not permit housing Lots of money and time spent (and wasted) on both sides How did the council include the area in housing plans when it wasn’t allowed to build there A bit of common sense has prevailed here, but it shows that those whom kept it on the table are not in the proper position to adjudicate for one and all ,not understanding legally binding documents is paramount to perform in this environment of consultations only fools would commit to try to overturn a covenant hope the council can now look after the land As a rule these areas become a dumping ground It was an awful scheme and only designed to make money for the Boon Brothers The Boon Bothers have already blocked a footpath removed a protected flint wall and felled perfectly healthy elms in their pursuit of getting the planning permission It’s good news the Labour councillors who campaigned for local votes based on it never happening under a Labour controlled council The Boon Brothers and Laxley Pennant (a particularly repugnant individual who likes to threaten elderly councillors ) must be seething The result is worth a glass of fizz tonight You could say it turned out to not be such a boon after all This tired “green lung” metaphor is old hat: the council should get phlegmatic and put people’s houses over everything (working in progress) I can appricate the stance of a pragmatic and stoic approach to house building the need is very clearly defined in Brighton the benefits and needs of green outdoor spaces are also overwhelmingly researched as well globally I also think just putting “houses over everything” comes with significant risks risks straining already stretched infrastructure These are things that we are already seeing and schools in particular — leading to declining public services There’s also the risk of exacerbating social inequalities prioritise luxury flats offering no social or affordable housing; pricing out local residents disregarding environmental considerations—such as flood risks and sustainable building practices could make developments unsustainable in the long run particularly given Brighton’s coastal location and vulnerability to climate change I do agree with proactive (affordable) housing development but also in conjunction with a measured response Thank goodness for the Covenant and local residents and community groups fighting to prevent the development of this land Recent research has confirmed the positive impact, (specifically the analgesic/pain reducing effect of watching nature scenes), and necessity of having accessible places of nature in our daily lives: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-56870-2 Such evidence shows that in this modern era it is more important than ever to protect healthy and functioning natural environments encouraging people to spend time in nature for the benefit of both the planet and people Academia is pretty overwhelming when it comes to the positive effect of having access to green spaces and using them regularly Does this mean that the Council will have to make its decision on 2 April under planning law ignoring the fact that as landlord it won’t give consent meaning that if it grants planning permission then Benfield will apply to Court for a judicial review of its decision as landlord not to give consent It’s fairly standard practice for developers to appeal any planning permission that doesn’t go their way It’s why there is usually a heavy focus on making strong legal argument by campaign groups against developments don’t have as much control over what gets built somewhat ironically given the perception This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. April Developers Benfield Property Ltd and Benfield Investments Ltd are proposing to build 62 houses and 39 flats/maisonettes in 3 blocks 40% of the units would meet the government’s definition of affordable housing the majority of those being 1-2 bedroom properties The application would require the change of use of part of footgolf course although nine holes would still be provided There would also be part demolition of derelict cottages and the erection of new dwellings Works to the listed Benfield Barn are proposed to create a community hub facility including café and footgolf The ruined barn outbuildings would be developed into 5 new workshops Landscaping works including allotments/orchards the creation of and upgrades to pedestrian and cycle routes and alterations to existing vehicle access off Hangleton Lane are all part of the proposal Benfield Valley is located between the Old Shoreham Road the A27 by-pass and the A293 Hangleton Link Road It forms a green wedge which stretches from the urban area to the south up to a border with the A27 and South Downs National Park to the north Parts of the site are used for formal and informal recreation The northern part of the valley is currently used as a footgolf course The application site is located to the north of Hangleton Lane and the application also proposes landscape/ecological works within/around the footgolf areas to the north and the creation of a new public park to the south of Hangleton Lane The site includes the small Benfield Barn Conservation Area which contains the Grade II listed Benfield Barn (currently used in connection with the footgolf use and including a cafe) Much of the valley is designated as Local Green Space and a Local Wildlife Site Although it is often referred to as ‘Benfield Valley nature reserve’ much of the valley has what is known as a Local Wildlife Site planning designation The designation recognises the importance of wildlife and nature conservation in this area and means that any development would have to ensure that any harmful impacts on nature can be reduced or “mitigated” as well as providing appropriate biodiversity net gains The valley is also designated as a ‘Local Green Space’ This is a specific national planning designation which provides special protection for green areas demonstrated to be of particular importance to local communities The council owns the freehold of the site and it is currently leased out on a long lease to other parties we have informed the applicant that we are not minded to grant landlord’s consent to the proposal because of a covenant on the land requiring that its use be restricted to leisure and recreation this is entirely separate to the planning process and cannot be considered in deciding it Over the course of the application objections were received from 278 individuals including representatives of the Council for the Protection of Rural England Sussex Wildlife Trust and Brighton Downs Alliance.  Representations in support were received from 10 individuals including representatives of the Regency Society and Hove Civic Society no objections were made by Natural England Southern Water or the Conservation Area Group You can view the application and accompanying papers through our online Planning Register by searching for application reference number BH2024/01720 (and BH2024/01721 for the Listed Building Consent application) Planning applications and permissions relate to a property we have refused to grant landlord’s consent for this proposal as the Local Planning Authority the council must still decide the planning application and associated listed building consent for works to the barn Having assessed all of the information submitted and responses received Officers consider the scheme to be acceptable and so have recommended approval Councillors will vote on it at the April Planning Committee this would not override any landownership matters which would need to be negotiated separately Having studied the application documents and comments received the committee members will hear a report from council planning officers a submission by the developers and ask questions before voting to grant or refuse You can watch the Planning Committee webcast live on our website from 2pm on 2 April 2025.  The consultation period on a planning application for a
