Former world champion reflects on a hard day of racing on the Côte d'Azur
Thymen Arensman looked like a man who would have been quite happy if someone told him the race was over on Friday evening
The Dutchman was one of several Ineos Grenadiers riders to make the head of the race when the weather caused splits in the main field
but he appeared to be paying for his efforts outside the Ineos bus
as he was helped into warm weather gear by waiting soigneurs as they frantically warmed his hands
the American’s face pale with the cold as he shivered on a turbo trainer
“It was once called the Race to the Sun
but the sun has been hiding pretty well for some time now,” Rolf Aldag joked to Cycling Weekly as he reflected on what turned out to be a successful day for Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe
“I remember last year it was the same scenario
We’ll be waiting a long time before it’s warm here and you can wear short sleeves
so I guess the riders will try to get through it."
you’re in the car and you kind of feel sorry for them,” he added
“It was really tough and the conditions then caused some damage to the overall
Along with Ineos, Red Bull were one of the big winners of the stage with German rider Florian Lipowitz jumping up to second place overall, 40 seconds off the lead held by Matteo Jorgenson
it’s never very good to see one of the stars have to leave and not be part of the race anymore
so now we have to see what the others are going to do
so they might want to do something and might want to try and test out everyone else.”
Meanwhile, the stage winner, Mads Pedersen
smiled when he was asked to recount his experiences of the deluge
explaining that it had brought back memories of one of his greatest ever days on the bike
it was a bit worse than this but the outcome was the same and it was a victory,” he said
referencing his World Championships win in Yorkshire
“It was pretty tough weather conditions today
it was about five to eight degrees and raining all day
especially when the stage is 200 plus kilometres.”
“It helps if you’re used to training in this weather in the winter," Pedersen explained
"I also think there’s a mental part of it where you just don’t care
and if you keep your mindset clean and clear on racing instead of feeling bad for yourself in weather like this then it helps you a lot.”

ITER is charting new territory in fusion research
It has been noted that the construction of this acetylene-based conductive additives plant will provide a critical link in the value chain for lithium-ion batteries
powering the global transition to electrification and renewable energy
will be supported by a long-term agreement for acetylene supplied from a neighbouring site owned by Equistar Chemicals LP
Acetylene is a colourless gas widely utilised as a chemical building block
Orion’s production process works by turning the acetylene into a powder
which is then added to lithium-ion batteries
enhancing electrical conductivity and extending the lifetime of the most valuable component of an electric vehicle
The material plays a similar role in high-voltage cables utilised for wind and solar farms
Orion will invest between $120m and $140m in the facility
Construction is expected to commence in the second half of 2024
This investment should increase the company’s conductive additives capacity by approximately 12 kilotons per year
we will quadruple our effective manufacturing capacity of acetylene-based conductive additives,” explained Corning Painter
“We are already experiencing high demand for this material
so expanding capacity for it is one of our top investment priorities and a major milestone in our growth plans
which has a similar plant in France with locally supplied acetylene gas from LyondellBasell
is the sole producer of acetylene-based conductive additives in the European Union
The US plant will bring new technology and high-skilled jobs to the country
positively impacting long-term job creation for the local community
demand for battery additives is expected to increase amid a global boom in the construction of gigafactories making lithium-ion batteries
The plant will have a favourable environmental profile and will be subject to obtaining routine regulatory approvals
“Batteries will continue to play an increasingly vital role in the world’s shift toward clean energy,” Painter concluded
“By being a key supplier of materials to the battery industry
we are living up to our mission of delivering solutions for a more sustainable future.”

Orion Engineered Carbons, formerly Evonik’s carbon black business, has bought French acetylene black manufacturer Société du Noir d’Acétylène de l’Aubette (SN2A) from LyondellBasell Industries as of Oct
With this platform we are going to significantly strengthen our capabilities in the lithium-ion battery market and broaden our position in other attractive markets,” said Corning Painter
adding that the bolt-on acquisition is a perfect fit with the company’s focus on specialty carbon blacks
The deal with LyondellBasell includes a long-term agreement for supplying feedstock. Orion said it plans to strengthen production capabilities at SN2A’s plant in Berre l’Etang
Orion is also expanding capacity for specialty carbon blacks in Ravenna
with the addition of another line to supply the growing coatings
The new line is expected to begin production in the fourth quarter of 2019
The company said the investment was a continuation of its portfolio realignment toward higher value-added products
Orion was formed in July 2011 following Evonik’s divestment of its carbon black activities to private equity groups Rhone Capital and Triton Partners
Orion went public on the New York Stock Exchange in July 2014
