José Manuel Díaz takes second ahead of Clément Berthet
Guillaume Martin (Groupama-FDJ) attacked from a reduced peloton on the steepest section of the climb to Monfaucon and won Classic Grand Besançon Doubs.
On the double-digit gradients of the Côte de la Malate
the second ascent marking the path to the finish
Martin made his move when pacemaker Matteo Vercher (TotalEnergies) dropped back with 2.5km to go
Martin was next in line and accelerated over the next 500 metres
charging ahead for his solo effort as the gradient relented slightly
Clément Berthet (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) and José Manuel Díaz (Burgos Berpellet BH) went on the chase for the final 2km to the finish
taking his first victory in almost three years
I had tactically perfect day," Martin said at the finish
noting that he felt like he had early symptoms of a cold but his teammates supported him well to the final climb
The race is part of the Coupe de France series
with Stian Edvardsen-Fredheim (Uno-X Mobility) leading the overall standings by 7 points ahead of Clément Venturini (Arkéa-B&B Hotels)
Martin moved into third place with the 70 points he earned for the win Friday
joining five other riders 10 points behind the leader
Making his return to the peloton after Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike) returned to racing a month after he abandoned Tirreno-Adriatico on the final stage
experiencing numbness in his legs which plagued him in 2024
The young Belgian finished 1:32 off the winning pace in 32nd position
and is expected to continue his comeback at the Tour du Jura on Saturday and the Tour du Doubs on Sunday.
With 50km to go in the 168.6km French one-day race
Loe van Belle (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Tom Portsmouth (Wagner Bazin WB) ascended the Côte de la Malate for the first pass and created the first true breakaway of the race.
They were joined by Louis Rouland (Arkéa-B&B Hotels)
Théo Delacroix (St Michel-Preference Home-Auber93) and Johannes Kulset (Uno-X Mobility)
but the accelerations from behind ended their charge with 15km to go
It all came down to the second and final ascent of the steep 3.9km Malate climb
he kept the pressure on by moving out of the saddle to open a 15-second advantage over his two chasers and held on for the victory

Liberal ArtsImmersive French program enhances fluency and cultural understandingPenn State students experience life

second from right) FR 299 course in Besançon
— A faculty-led summer French language program in Besançon
offered beginner to advanced-level students of French an immersive experience to rapidly improve their fluency
Penn State students spent June and July enrolled in FR 299 Foreign Study: French, a seven-credit intensive program held at the Center for Applied Linguistics at the University of Franche-Comté. The experience was one of 12 faculty-led programs that took place in the College of the Liberal Arts this summer
students benefited from living in a city with few English-speaking tourists
lodging with host families and experiencing the rich cultural environment of Besançon
Classes were held five days a week with other international students in the program
“The cultural insights and French proficiency that are gained from living with a host family and taking classes with other students who have the same language goals is a one-of-a-kind experience and opportunity that is hard to replicate once students graduate,” said Heather McCoy
“The Besançon program is a unique opportunity for students to really live in France for an extended period of time and gain the kind of knowledge that can only be gained as a cultural insider.”
McCoy served as the faculty leader of the program from 2011 to 2023, when Christina Sztajnkrycer, assistant teaching professor of French and Francophone studies
McCoy has seen multiple iterations of the program over the years and served as the program assistant to Sztajnkrycer to facilitate the transition this summer
advocate and facilitator for the students as they navigate their cultural experience
“People often have sort of a false impression about how French culture is going to be similar to North American culture,” Sztajnkrycer said
“There are really some important differences that shock people
so I kind of tried to ease the students into those cultural differences
Although a fully enriching cultural experience is one of the primary drivers of the education abroad program
the main goal is to significantly boost a student’s ability to communicate in French
Living in Besançon for an extended period of time provided students with the unique opportunity to become cultural insiders
found the immersive environment incredibly beneficial due to the constant exposure to French without the crutch of English
The consistent interaction with the language embedded French into her subconscious
she now experiences moments where English TV shows in the background begin to sound like French to her
Students in the program were placed with host families
with Ried’s host mother welcoming her and other students from the United States
Each student had a different level of French fluency
but they were able to communicate with each other no matter their background
students alternated between two types of classes
The intensive French classes covered grammar through comprehension in reading
The French culture classes offered an in-depth exploration of French society
Sztajnkrycer encourages Penn State students to learn more about this program as it isn’t limited to French majors but is also offered as a way to fulfill a French minor or simply improve fluency
the summer format of faculty-led programs allows students who find it challenging to fit traditional study abroad into their busy academic schedules a way to still have the experience
students walk away from the program with professional development skills
a deeper understanding of French culture and newfound friends
Ried and her fellow students had several standout experiences during the trip
from watching the Olympic flame pass through Besançon in June
to attending the Olympic soccer match between Morocco and Singapore
to traveling to Marseille and Dijon to watch the Tour de France
“Many students who have done the Besançon program have gone on to study abroad again in a different program
done internships in France or gone to graduate school in France,” McCoy said
“Some have built careers with French multinationals and worked in other French-speaking contexts.”
She said education abroad offers students not only the opportunity to explore the world but the chance for self-exploration

Niels Vandeputte third on brutally cold day in France
Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) did it again
taking another solo victory at the UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Besançon on Sunday on a brutally cold day
The world champion powered away on the second lap of the slippery and heavy course to claim his third World Cup victory of this cyclocross season
Toon Aerts (Deschacht-Hens-FSP)
who got off to a fast start and stayed with Van der Poel during the first lap
held off the chasing field to secure second place
Niels Vandeputte (Alpecin-Deceuninck) was third
Though Van der Poel said it would be a “difficult race to manage” at the start due to the conditions
he obviously had no problems on the course made slippery by a layer of ice over mud
“It was nice course with a ice crowd as well
It’s not often we go abroad anymore with cyclocross
so it's nice to see so many people here,” said Van der Poel who flew by private jet from his home in Antwerp to claim his fifth win out of five races
Van der Poel quickly made his way through traffic to connect with Aerts before taking a faster line down on a small drop to take the front
He then put in the fastest lap - a time of 9:13 on the second lap - to establish his gap
and continued to find the safest and fastest path over the muddy and icy ruts on the technical course
but I kept doing my thing and I stayed out of trouble all day actually
and that was what I was trying to do.”
Aerts and Vandeputte settled in second and third place respectively
After a disastrous start marred by a bike exchange problem
World Cup leader Michael Vanthourenhout (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) found himself in 37th place
trailing the leader by over 30 seconds after the first lap
steadily working his way through the field and capitalizing on mistakes by those ahead
He ultimately crossed the line in seventh place
1:17 behind the winner — enough to keep him in the World Cup leader’s jersey
Also having issues was Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) who had trouble clipping in after a fast start
pushing him well down the rankings and forcing him to chase until he connected with Joran Wyseure (Crelan-Corendon) on the penultimate lap to battle for fourth place
The pair chose to skip the pit on the final lap but Iserbyt was able to pull away to take fourth place
nine seconds ahead of Wyseure who finished fifth

A Smithville man died in a Saturday morning crash on Saltcreek Township Road 609
according to a news release from the Holmes County Sheriff's Office
Besancon was driving southbound on 609 when his vehicle drifted left of center
swiping a GMC pickup and the trailer it was pulling
The truck and trailer were being operated a 24-year-old Norton man
Besancon’s vehicle exited the east side of the roadway and struck a mailbox
a large landscaping stone and a fence before coming to rest in a bean field
which notes the pickup driver and a passenger were wearing safet belts and were not injured
Assisting the Sheriff's Office at the scene were Fredericksburg Fire and EMS and the Holmes County coroner
and her first World Cup podium was Blanka Vas (SD Worx-Protime)
who crossed the line 1:02 behind the winner
In her return to cyclocross after an almost two-year absence, Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease A Bike) chased from a fifth-row start to take fifth place after a battle with Zoe Backstedt (Canyon-Sram) who finished fourth on Sunday
it was such an amazing crowd,” Van Empel said
Van Empel agreed that being able to set her lines at the front at the front on the usually fast course made heavy by the cold conditions
leaving a thin top layer of ice over slick mud
so it was a benefit that I could ride my own race
Backstedt had a fast start to take the holeshot ahead of the 66-rider field which did not include Puck Pieterse who took a planned break
with riders stringing out behind her on the technical course
Van Empel had settled at the front with a gap to all chasers
a position she would keep until the finish as riders were seen blowing on their hands to try and warm up their fingers on the finish straight
I rode my own pace and there was enough,” Van Empel said
the Dutchwoman still held a gap of seven seconds
a lead that would increase lap by lap to the end.

Vos uses her skills and power to move up from her fifth-row start

Eight-time ‘cross champion chases from fifth row start
After a nearly two-year absence from cyclocross, Marianne Vos made her return at the UCI World Cup in Besançon on Sunday
where she finished in fifth place on the difficult icy course with a mediocre starting position
The eight-time world champion’s last cyclocross race was at the Benidorm World Cup in January 2023 before her recovery from iliac artery surgery in August
forced her to miss the following 'cross season.
the Visma-Lease A Bike rider admitted that she had some apprehension about her first race back
exciting and some nerves as well of course
always the first race of the season,” Vos said
“I think in this race everybody will fight for
it's technical, I will have to try and
she knew that she would have a battle in front of her to get a result
and then she faced the extra challenging ice-over-mud course conditions and brutally cold weather
and could not pinpoint a specific section as the most difficult.
“There's not much of a recuperation in the race
so if you're uphill and you're pushing or running
you need to be very sharp and then focus because every corner is really slippery.”
The 37-year old Dutchwoman and the 20-year old Brit were then locked in a duel
each using their specific skills to take the front
and even skipping some bike changes to get the advantage while keeping track of riders coming up behind them. But then
and hold it to the finish line for fourth place.
“I had nothing,” Vos said of her final lap
the coordination gets a bit messy if you're tired
so the last lap was maybe not the best one
but it was a good race also with Zoe Backstedt so it was nice.”
It was definitely a hard race but I was happy to find myself moving up in the bunch
and then of course when I was around 4 or 5
Vos said that she would use this race to test her performance to see if she would race the World Championship in in Liévin

Mathieu van der Poel’s win streak continued in Sunday’s eighth round of the 2024-2025 UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Besançon
It was his fifth straight triumph in eight days
including a natural hat trick of World Cup rounds
Sunday’s runner-up Toon Aerts cut Michael Vanthourenhout’s lead to 25 points at the top of the table
Van der Poel had stolen the limelight over the last two rounds
but Vanthourenhout was 36 points clear of Aerts at the top of the table after earning two of the six rounds
Aerts was determined to snag the hole shot on Lap 1
Round 1 victor Eli Iserbyt was in trouble right away after a clip-in problem
Aerts rabbited away on the front and by the six minute mark was leading van der Poel
Filipe Orts nine seconds behind with van der Poel’s teammate Niels Vandeputte trailing the Spaniard
On Lap 2 of 7 it was apparent that Swiss rider Loris Rouiller was on the ride of his life
Just as Vandeputte was in touching distance of the lead duo
Joran Wyseure dispatched Rouiller in his own podium bid
Aerts and Vandeputte trailed by 10 seconds after the second circuit
Wyseure had a 2024-2025 Superprestige round in his pocket
and he was intent on getting his second World Cup podium of the season
but he had 12 seconds to make up on Aerts and Vandeputte on Lap 3
but Vanthourenhout was still scrapping farther back
The situation was as-you-were on the middle lap
Rouiller and Vanthourenhout met as the former dropped and the latter rose
Van der Poel was still riding smoothly and stylishly out front on the penultimate lap
Vandeputte hovering two or three seconds behind
Iserbyt had climbed to fourth by the time he heard the bell
but was 26 seconds in arrears of Vandeputte
Vanthourenhout squeezed by Swiss Kevin Kuhn into seventh where he finished
It was Vandeputte’s 10th podium of the season and Aerts’ fifth
The next round is January 5 in Dendermonde

There were a few notable descents with some nasty ruts

MADISON TOWNSHIP — Madison has found its guy
Madison Athletic Director Doug Rickert announced in a news release that Brent Besancon is the six-member search committee's choice to be the Rams' new football coach
has been submitted for board approval to take over the football program and the matter will be voted upon Wednesday
Besancon is a veteran coach with 10 years of experience as a head coach and more than 20 years total including years spent as an assistant
He started his coaching career at his alma mater
where he was an assistant for 15 years under longtime Smithville coach Keith Schrock
"I have been familiar with the area after playing a lot of playoff games in Smithville and I was intrigued by the Madison community," Besancon said
"When you live smack dab between Canton and Mansfield and you grow up with the McKinley/Massillon rivalry on one side of you and the other side is the Madison/Mansfield Senior rivalry
and I think it is any coach's dream to be involved in either one of these rivalries."
As an assistant coach and offensive coordinator for the Smithies
he helped them reach the 2002 state championship game and finish as state runners-up
They had 11 playoff appearances and nine conference championships during his time as an assistant
He took his first job as varsity head coach in 2007
going 11-9 in two years as New London skipper with 5-5 and 6-4 seasons
Besancon then left New London to become head coach at Rittman
He went 1-9 during the 2009 season but completely turned things around by going 5-5 in 2010
He resigned after his second season to take over for Schrock at Smithville in 2012
compiling a 32-30 record before stepping down in 2017
He was voted the 2015 Wayne County Athletic League Coach of the Year after leading Smithville to its first playoff win in 13 years
Besancon has been an assistant coach at Wooster High School and spent time on Doug Haas's staff and won OCC titles in 2019 and 2020
He also coached Lexington head coach Andrew Saris
who spent time as an assistant coach at Madison
when Saris was in high school at Smithville
"I've had some former players who were assistant coaches at Madison like Andrew Saris and I have kept up with him and he has nothing but great things to say about the community," Besancon said
"I've stayed familiar with it and I am excited
all I tried to do was make football as enjoyable of an experience as I could for the kids and that will be my main focus going into Madison
I want to make football an enjoyable experience for these young men and the community."
Besanson has been on Madison's radar for quite some time as he was a finalist for the same position during one of the previous openings
"Brent was a finalist for the head coaching position before," Rickert said in the release
"He truly wants to be at Madison and turn things around
Although he was not the head coach at Wooster
he had coached successfully in the OCC as an assistant."
The committee was more impressed by his time at New London at Rittman
where he dedicated himself to revitalizing the struggling program and turned it into a winner in just two seasons
"What stood out to the committee was his ability to turn around struggling programs
as he did at New London and Rittman as the head coach," Rickert said in the release
he had the best Firelands Conference record in 12 years and the only winning season in 13 years
he claimed their first five-win season in five years and increased their roster by 20 boys
He expanded their football program to include seventh grade and freshman teams."
Besancon will take over a Madison football program that continues to search for answers
It has not had a .500-or-better season since going 5-5 in 2015
the Rams are a combined 5-62 with three winless seasons
with their lone win in 2022 coming over winless Mount Vernon
The Rams haven't won more than two games in a season since 2016
who is 49-53 in 10 seasons as a head coach
will be Madison's third head coach in three years
"We are looking forward to Brent leading our young men next season on the football field," Rickert said
And he is looking forward to getting to work
His first order of business will be to meet with his new players and let them know right away that he is here to work and help them achieve their goals
we had three coaches over a 50-year period," Besancon said
"This is three coaches in three different years for these young men
the first thing I am going to work for us get their trust because they have every right to be skeptic
we will try and get that level of work as high as we can because that is what it will take
is a lot of work to get to where we want to be
I will earn their trust so I can raise that level of work."

France's top court on Wednesday ordered a retrial of a Chilean accused of killing his Japanese ex-girlfriend in the eastern city of Besancon in 2016
ruling that investigators had withheld evidence from his defence team
A lower court had sentenced Nicolas Zepeda in April 2022 to 28 years for killing Narumi Kurosaki
An appeals court upheld that verdict in December 2023
said the Chilean would not be released from jail
It said it ordered the retrial because one of the investigators had used slides in their presentation to the court not previously submitted to defence lawyers
Kurosaki's body has never been found and prosecutors said all the evidence pointed to him being the premeditated killer of the scholarship student
Zepeda has repeatedly claimed he is innocent
Kurosaki arrived in Besancon in the summer of 2016 to learn French
with whom she had broken up two months earlier
often appeared to have difficulty explaining many points of the case
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Thierry Besançon, associate extension specialist in weed science for specialty crops, received the 2023 Outstanding Educator Award from the Northeastern Weed Science Society (NEWSS)
He was also elected vice president of the NEWSS board
Besançon was characteristically modest and credited the support of his Rutgers NJAES colleagues for the recognition he received from the weed science community at the 2023 joint annual meeting of the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) and NEWSS in Arlington
“I wouldn’t have received the Outstanding Educator award without the help and support of all our Rutgers Extension community,” he said
Besançon also received additional accolades at the same meeting that was held from Jan
This included the 2023 Outstanding Weed Science Journal Reviewer Award from the WSSA
He joined the WSSA Public Relations Committee
continuing his outstanding service to the weed science community
His research at the NJAES Philip E. Marucci Center for Blueberry and Cranberry Research and Extension in Chatsworth
has been focused on weed control in cranberry and blueberry
and developing sustainable weed management strategies for specialty crops
he was eager to start multidisciplinary collaborative research with other faculty members within the Department of Plant Biology at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences
“There are many new emerging challenges in specialty crops for efficient weed control
creating unique opportunities for research on alternative weed management strategies,” he said at the time
Besançon grew up in Epinal in northeastern France and worked for 10 years in Europe on pests and disease management in stone fruit production
in Crop Science at North Carolina State University
where he spent five years working on weed control through cultural practices and crop allelopathy in sorghum and other row crops of the southeastern United States
Besançon has focused on developing Integrated Weed Management strategies for vegetable and small fruit cropping systems
Of particular interest to him is developing efficient management strategies for Carolina redroot
a native species that is a problematic weed of New Jersey cranberry bogs
Besançon collaborates with other Northeast and Mid-Atlantic weed scientists to research how to integrate cover crops in plasticulture tomato and cucumber production systems
His focus on cover crops also includes evaluating red clover living mulch in cole crops and using goosegrass as a potential row-middle sod cover in New Jersey highbush blueberry where years of repeated cultivation have led to unsustainable soil pH and decrease in content of organic matter
Part of his research is also to investigate new spray technologies in perennial cropping systems to optimize herbicide use while maintaining excellent weed control efficacy
teaching “Introduction to Weed Science” and “Introduction to Horticulture,” and advising undergraduates and mentoring graduate students
Besançon has been recognized with the Rutgers Extension Specialist of the Year award in 2019
Adams Award for outstanding achievements by junior faculty in 2020 and the NEWSS Outstanding Researcher Award in 2021
