The experience was one of 12 faculty-led programs that took place in the College of the Liberal Arts this summer students benefited from living in a city with few English-speaking tourists lodging with host families and experiencing the rich cultural environment of Besançon Classes were held five days a week with other international students in the program “The cultural insights and French proficiency that are gained from living with a host family and taking classes with other students who have the same language goals is a one-of-a-kind experience and opportunity that is hard to replicate once students graduate,” said Heather McCoy “The Besançon program is a unique opportunity for students to really live in France for an extended period of time and gain the kind of knowledge that can only be gained as a cultural insider.” McCoy served as the faculty leader of the program from 2011 to 2023, when Christina Sztajnkrycer, assistant teaching professor of French and Francophone studies McCoy has seen multiple iterations of the program over the years and served as the program assistant to Sztajnkrycer to facilitate the transition this summer advocate and facilitator for the students as they navigate their cultural experience “People often have sort of a false impression about how French culture is going to be similar to North American culture,” Sztajnkrycer said “There are really some important differences that shock people so I kind of tried to ease the students into those cultural differences Although a fully enriching cultural experience is one of the primary drivers of the education abroad program the main goal is to significantly boost a student’s ability to communicate in French Living in Besançon for an extended period of time provided students with the unique opportunity to become cultural insiders found the immersive environment incredibly beneficial due to the constant exposure to French without the crutch of English The consistent interaction with the language embedded French into her subconscious she now experiences moments where English TV shows in the background begin to sound like French to her Students in the program were placed with host families with Ried’s host mother welcoming her and other students from the United States Each student had a different level of French fluency but they were able to communicate with each other no matter their background students alternated between two types of classes The intensive French classes covered grammar through comprehension in reading The French culture classes offered an in-depth exploration of French society Sztajnkrycer encourages Penn State students to learn more about this program as it isn’t limited to French majors but is also offered as a way to fulfill a French minor or simply improve fluency the summer format of faculty-led programs allows students who find it challenging to fit traditional study abroad into their busy academic schedules a way to still have the experience students walk away from the program with professional development skills a deeper understanding of French culture and newfound friends Ried and her fellow students had several standout experiences during the trip from watching the Olympic flame pass through Besançon in June to attending the Olympic soccer match between Morocco and Singapore to traveling to Marseille and Dijon to watch the Tour de France “Many students who have done the Besançon program have gone on to study abroad again in a different program done internships in France or gone to graduate school in France,” McCoy said “Some have built careers with French multinationals and worked in other French-speaking contexts.” She said education abroad offers students not only the opportunity to explore the world but the chance for self-exploration The Career Enrichment Network empowers Liberal Arts students to explore engage and define their career journey through diverse career development opportunities at the UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Besançon on Sunday on a brutally cold day The world champion powered away on the second lap of the slippery and heavy course to claim his third World Cup victory of this cyclocross season Toon Aerts (Deschacht-Hens-FSP) who got off to a fast start and stayed with Van der Poel during the first lap held off the chasing field to secure second place Niels Vandeputte (Alpecin-Deceuninck) was third Though Van der Poel said it would be a “difficult race to manage” at the start due to the conditions he obviously had no problems on the course made slippery by a layer of ice over mud “It was nice course with a ice crowd as well It’s not often we go abroad anymore with cyclocross so it's nice to see so many people here,” said Van der Poel who flew by private jet from his home in Antwerp to claim his fifth win out of five races Van der Poel quickly made his way through traffic to connect with Aerts before taking a faster line down on a small drop to take the front He then put in the fastest lap - a time of 9:13 on the second lap - to establish his gap and continued to find the safest and fastest path over the muddy and icy ruts on the technical course but I kept doing my thing and I stayed out of trouble all day actually and that was what I was trying to do.” Aerts and Vandeputte settled in second and third place respectively After a disastrous start marred by a bike exchange problem World Cup leader Michael Vanthourenhout (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) found himself in 37th place trailing the leader by over 30 seconds after the first lap steadily working his way through the field and capitalizing on mistakes by those ahead He ultimately crossed the line in seventh place 1:17 behind the winner — enough to keep him in the World Cup leader’s jersey Also having issues was Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) who had trouble clipping in after a fast start pushing him well down the rankings and forcing him to chase until he connected with Joran Wyseure (Crelan-Corendon) on the penultimate lap to battle for fourth place The pair chose to skip the pit on the final lap but Iserbyt was able to pull away to take fourth place nine seconds ahead of Wyseure who finished fifth Results powered by FirstCycling Lyne LamoureuxLyne has been involved in professional cycling for more than 15 years in both news reporting and sports marketing Sunday it was such an amazing crowd,” Van Empel said Van Empel agreed that being able to set her lines at the front at the front on the usually fast course made heavy by the cold conditions leaving a thin top layer of ice over slick mud so it was a benefit that I could ride my own race Backstedt had a fast start to take the holeshot ahead of the 66-rider field which did not include Puck Pieterse who took a planned break with riders stringing out behind her on the technical course Van Empel had settled at the front with a gap to all chasers a position she would keep until the finish as riders were seen blowing on their hands to try and warm up their fingers on the finish straight I rode my own pace and there was enough,” Van Empel said the Dutchwoman still held a gap of seven seconds a two-year absence from cyclocross, Marianne Vos made her return at the UCI World Cup in Besançon on Sunday where she finished in fifth place on the difficult icy course with a mediocre starting position The eight-time world champion’s last cyclocross race was at the Benidorm World Cup in January 2023 before her recovery from iliac artery surgery in August forced her to miss the following 'cross season.  the Visma-Lease A Bike rider admitted that she had some apprehension about her first race back exciting and some nerves as well of course always the first race of the season,” Vos said “I think in this race everybody will fight for it's technical,  I will have to try and she knew that she would have a battle in front of her to get a result and then she faced the extra challenging ice-over-mud course conditions and brutally cold weather and could not pinpoint a specific section as the most difficult.  “There's not much of a recuperation in the race so if you're uphill and you're pushing or running you need to be very sharp and then focus because every corner is really slippery.” The 37-year old Dutchwoman and the 20-year old Brit were then locked in a duel each using their specific skills to take the front and even skipping some bike changes to get the advantage while keeping track of riders coming up behind them.  But then and hold it to the finish line for fourth place.  “I had nothing,” Vos said of her final lap the coordination gets a bit messy if you're tired so the last lap was maybe not the best one but it was a good race also with Zoe Backstedt  so it was nice.” It was definitely a hard race but I was happy to find myself moving up in the bunch and then of course when I was around 4 or 5 Vos said that she would use this race to test her Vandeputte trailed by 10 seconds after the second circuit Wyseure had a 2024-2025 Superprestige round in his pocket and he was intent on getting his second World Cup podium of the season but he had 12
