On May 21, Haley Bezon was awarded the first ever Annual Award for Innovation, presented by the The Coulombe Center for Health Improvement The event took place at the Oceanside Golf Resort in Boothbay Harbor The Coulombe Center Award for Innovation was created to highlight community partner organizations doing innovative work within the LincolnHealth service area The goal of the award is to build capacity in the community and further develop innovative programs that already exist locally Bezon is the founder and director of the new organization Hearty Roots, https://www.heartyroots.org/ Hearty Roots is a non-profit program designed for kids between the ages of 9 and 15 and outdoor experiences for youth in Mid-Coast Maine.” The Hearty Roots website states the organization is “… an esteem-building outdoor adventure program led by professional counselors and backcountry gurus … guided by the power of relationships kids gain experiences that strengthen resilience and personal growth.” Coulombe Center Program Manager Anni Pat McKenney presented the award She said she and others at Lincoln Health have been talking about how the Coulombe Center can highlight people in the community and pass along funds to serve community work that’s already happening “as part of the mission of the Coulombe Center to be a catalyst for action.” “This nonprofit’s founder has a vision and a passion for getting youth outdoors and empowering each child to find their strengths within themselves.” but brings years of experience to its work partnerships formed with multiple local nonprofits and countless hours dedicated to learning how to best meet the needs of local youth before even one child participated in the program asking them to describe both the founder and the work of Hearty Roots Some of the words she received were: “Committed opportunity and never-ending hope.” She said the words that came to her mind were: “Courageous who works behind the scenes to create ideas to fruition to help our communities from Damariscotta and throughout Lincoln County … if there is something super cool and innovative happening who has been “unwavering and patient holding down the fort” with their family as she picked up and created “another job for myself.” Bezon thanked three foundations for providing funds for her “pipe dream”: The Elizabeth Ann Leach Charitable Trust the Horizon Foundation and the Maine Community Foundation “If I could find out who was on those committees I would hug them probably for an uncomfortable amount of time Before moving to Maine around seven years ago where she worked in outdoor behavioral health running therapy trips in that state She is now a school counselor at Edgecomb Eddy School “I’m on the front line working with kids on a daily basis strengthening social and emotional skill sets helping families overcome barriers that are keeping their child from accessing their education She said the fusion of the two worlds of emotional health support and outdoor camping adventures led her to found Hearty Roots to fill that unmet need for kids in their communities Bezon stated the goal of the program is to equip kids with the skills they need to handle adversity and stress That takes place when “we get the kids off the couch and into nature and into authentic interpersonal relationships.” a check for $2,500 was presented to Bezon and sentencing hearing because he didn’t have an opportunity to address the court during the last one Supreme Court of Guam justices on Tuesday hearing oral arguments in the appeal by Quinton Bezon More: Sailor found guilty of sexual assault More: Convicted sailor allowed to go home to Cleveland for the holidays Bezon was sentenced to four years incarceration in July 2017 After a night of drinking with a group of mutual friends in October 2015 Bezon fell asleep in a bed at a Tumon hotel next to a woman who he didn’t know before that night Other people in the group had also fallen asleep in different areas of the hotel room The woman woke up to Bezon sexually assaulting her and later that morning she was dropped home and told her wife They went to the police and reported Bezon At the time he was charged Bezon had been stationed in Guam, assigned to the USS Frank Cable Not given the chance to speakBezon was convicted of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct The only person who spoke during his sentencing was his victim Bezon’s attorneys in his appeal include Trapp and attorney Joseph Razzano Bezon’s attorneys state Bezon was not given the chance to speak and address the court during sentencing They asked the court to remand the case and order a new sentence Bezon was afforded no opportunity to personally address the court and even though he may have given a statement in the (pre-sentence investigation report) this does not fulfill the mandate imposed by (the law),” the appeal brief stated Trapp and Razzano cited a Guam law that states before the court hands down its sentence the judge is to let the defense lawyer speak on behalf of the defendant and the judge is to address the defendant personally and ask if he wishes to make a statement and give any information The attorneys said Bezon’s substantial rights were affected by the trial court’s error in not asking the Bezon if he wished to make a statement The Office of the Attorney General stated in its briefs that Bezon made statements in the pre-sentence investigation report and they believe his substantial rights were not affected “Here Bezon was able to express himself to the trial court in a previous statement although he did not do so orally at sentencing the error did not ‘implicate core values in the sentencing proceeding,’” the AG’s office stated in its brief The AG’s office stated they think a reversal isn’t required However the AG’s office agreed with Bezon’s attorney that should the Supreme Court of Guam decide on a reversal the high court should remand the case for resentencing The AG’s office said the high court shouldn’t reverse Bezon’s convictions Bezon is expected to be discharged under honorable conditions from the U.S the reduced prison sentence he asked for Judge Michael Bordallo denied Quinton Andrew Prescott Bezon’s request for less time Bezon was initially sentenced to serve four years in prison the Supreme Court of Guam sent his case back to Bordallo for another sentencing Bordallo then sentenced Bezon to four years but suspended two of those years This essentially meant Bezon was re-sentenced to two years.  Bezon has already started serving his time. Recently his lawyer filed a request asking for the judge to further reduce Bezon’s sentence from two years to one year “the court finds that justice for all parties involved will not be upheld if Bezon’s sentence is reduced.” was convicted of plotting to assassinate an Israeli minister A Paris suburb must remove a plaque honoring a convicted Palestinian terrorist Municipal authorities in Bezons were ordered to take down the plaque for Ihrima Majdi Al Rimawi who was convicted in the 2001 assassination of Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Zeevi in Jerusalem The judge told the Communist Party-dominated Bezons Council on Dec 19 that it had one month to remove the plaque dedicated to Rimawi who has been associated with several terrorist attacks and is serving a life sentence plus 80 years in an Israeli jail In response to a complaint filed by Sammy Ghozlan of the National Bureau for Vigilance against Anti-Semitism the judge also invalidated the Bezons Council’s February 2013 decision to grant Rimawi honorary citizenship Rimawi’s murder of Zeevi in October 2001 was carried out in the name of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine the group that claimed responsibility for last month’s terror attack at a synagogue in the Har Nof neighborhood of Jerusalem At the Bezons ceremony to honor Rimawi in February challenges of sustainable development Cerema disseminates and promotes the work and studies linked to its activities by producing publications through training and by organising technical days Cerema has been asked by SNCF Réseau to carry out a manoeuvrability study as part of the Eole project to extend the RER E This study allowed to evaluate the compatibility of this project with the navigation of boats and convoys during the crossing of the SNCF bridge at Bezons in the final situation This study also made it possible to propose solutions to minimize the inconvenience to navigation and minimize the risks for navigation both in the final situation and during the construction phase As part of the extension of the RER E to the west of Paris Paris a crossing of the Seine is to be created upstream of the Bezons viaduct also known as the Pont des Anglais also known as the Pont des Anglais or Pont de la Folie by boaters This sector is considered particularly delicate by boaters in its current current configuration SNCF Réseau therefore wanted to have a manoeuvrability study to assess the impact on traffic during the construction phase and to determine measures to be taken to ensure the safety of the worksite while allowing navigation the presence of two adjoining structures made it necessary to verify the conditions of passage of this new complex by the navigation Cerema uses the Navmer software developed by the Water This software calculates the forces on a vessel from its from its characteristics transmitted via the interface of the software allow the simulated ship to move Cerema was therefore responsible for building the simulation program by setting the parameters of the software (hydraulic conditions Two sessions of simulations were then carried out with with experienced navigators of the CFT (Compagnie Fluviale de Transport) the simulations were conducted on the most unfavourable situations the largest convoy (180 m) and current conditions close to the Highest Navigable Water (HWW) The passage by the arm of the new river which is the only one navigable for certain types of boats and for which the bridge crossing is the most delicate because it is off-centre with respect to the channel Some simulations were nevertheless carried out for a passage by the Marly arm confirming that the navigation did not present any particular difficulty The simulations were carried out in both downstream and upstream navigation directions including with one or the other of the navigable passes to simulate an alternating flow Infrastructure and Chief Justice Katherine Maraman authored the Supreme Court's opinion in the case The justices determined that Bezon's trial lawyer did not violate his client's Sixth Amendment rights "Any alleged disagreement between Bezon and his trial counsel was simply over the best course to attempt to avoid conviction the court ruled that trial counsel did not violate Bezon's right to autonomy in allegedly conceding that Bezon had had sexual intercourse with the victim," the opinion stated the Supreme Court did determine that the trial court committed error in not providing Bezon an opportunity for allocution Email notifications are only sent once a day Poll results are published every Monday in The Guam Daily Post Your browser is out of date and potentially vulnerable to security risks. We recommend switching to one of the following browsers: Support from readers like you keeps The Journal open You are visiting us because we have something you value Advertising revenue goes some way to support our mission so we can continue to produce accurate and meaningful journalism An account is an optional way to support the work we do.
