At the end of an excellent match, Paris Saint-Germain Handball came out on top against Pau-Billère 28-33 to book their place in the Coupe de France round of 16. Here's a look back at Les Rouge et Bleus' victory.
Big events call for big resources. For this gala match against the capital club, Pau-Billère moved from the friendly confines of the Sporting d'Este arena to the flamboyant Palais des Sports de Pau, adding a little more pressure for Raul Gonzalez's visiting side. It was all about avoiding the banana skin against a side who were looking to make history against one of the giants of the game.

Les Rouge et Bleu got off to a very strong start
who has evidently lost none of the passion that drove him last season
Paris quickly broke the deadlock (5': 1-3)
Although Pau fought hard to get back into the game
forcing their opponents to call a first time-out (10': 3-7)
the Parisian team continued to shine in a dazzling start to the match
with Kamil and Elohim scoring four and five goals respectively (16': 5-12)
recently honoured as last season's Liqui Moly StarLigue MVP
scoring a hat-trick to put the capital club ahead just before the break (24’: 10-17)
Then it was the turn of the neo-parisien Yahia Omar to join the party (26' : 12-19)
Paris returned to the dressing room with a six-goal lead (30': 15-21)

the capital club continued their attacking feast
thanks in particular to Kamil's sixth goal of the evening (34': 17-23)
The Rouge et Bleu defence also remained on guard
with Andreas Palicka always present when called upon to deal with Pau's counter-attacks
Raul Gonzalez took the opportunity to give the whole squad some game time
and it was David Balaguer and Kent Robin Tonnesen who then took their turns to find the back of the net (42': 19-26)

Algeria were a top team in African handball
winning the 2014 CAHB Men's African Championship
as "Les Fennecs" failed to qualify for the IHF World Championships in 2017 and 2019
the Algerians have somewhat bounced back in recent years
they participated in the 2021 IHF World Championship in Egypt
the fifth place at the CAHB Men's African Championship secured them a berth at Poland/Sweden 2023
The 5/6 placement match against Guinea was crucial for "Les Fennecs"
and they showed morale by claiming a narrow and hard-fought win (27:26)
After the Frenchman Alain Portes stepped down in the summer of 2021
the position of Algeria's head coach was vacant for eight months before Rabah Gherbi took over in March 2022 – and it was Gherbi who led the North African team at the 2022 CAHB Men's African Championship
the 52-year-old Gherbi coached the junior national team and two clubs from Kuwait
He also worked as an assistant coach of Saudi Arabia national team between 2021-22
Now his task is to prepare the national team for the World Championship
Gherbi is reluctant to mention specific goals for the tournament
"The main thing is that we will show up in Poland and Sweden to honour the national colours
as was the case during the 2022 African championship," he said
the opponents' calibre is not a handicap for us
What matters is to prepare well and give our best to go as far as possible in the competition," left back Mokhtar Kouri added

was travelling in a rented car on August 4 when he caused a road traffic collision with a motorbike
The District Court heard that Gourjault was leaving the B&B he was staying at in Maam East when he met a motorbike going in the opposite direction roughly 200 yards down the road
Solicitor for the defence Brian Gilmartin said that when Gourjault saw the motorcycle coming towards him he tried to give it space
But he instinctively turned to the right instead of the left
“He’d forgotten he was in Ireland as opposed to France.” Mr Gilmartin said
Gourjault’s primary concern was the victim’s welfare
Garda Alan Murphy said that all four wheels of Gourjault’s car were in the wrong lane when the accident occurred
He described the scene of the accident as a
“typical Connemara road” and that while there was enough room for two cars to pass each other
The garda added that he didn’t believe speed was a factor in causing the accident
Judge Fiona Lydon said she was reluctant to pursue criminal charges in the case of a road traffic accident if there is a civil option available and asked if the court could hear from the victim
The victim who was riding the motorbike wasn’t in court as he was on his way from UHG to Dublin for surgery for his injuries this day
and he said that he didn’t want to give an impact statement
though the hospital wouldn’t be definitive about the extent of his injuries
The court was pleased to hear that his injuries are not considered life-threatening
Gourjault is a 21 year old French student who has never been to Ireland before
He’s an only child who lost his father some time ago
He was also planing on returning to France the following day on August 8
as he’d only come to visit Ireland for the week
and the defence hoped that the judge wouldn’t disqualify him from driving
Gilmartin asked the court if there was a chance that Gourjault could be convicted of careless driving rather than dangerous driving
“his driving wasn’t dangerous per say.”
saying of the accident: “I consider it goes beyond carelessness.”
For dangerous driving Gourjault was fined €500
which will be paid with the money he lodged for bail
and disqualified from driving for two years
