A British man died on Sunday (June 18) morning in Biscarrosse
after being caught in a riptide in the Atlantic Ocean
Rescue teams were scrambled just after 9:00 on Sunday after being notified of a swimmer being swept away from the shore
the man was pronounced dead just after midday
A four-year-old is also in critical condition after almost drowning in Biscarrosse’s lake
leading safety officials to urge holidaymakers to remember the danger of swimming
Local prefectures have asked all swimmers to “exercise extreme caution,” when swimming in the Atlantic Ocean
and asked people to stick to “regulated areas supervised by lifeguards”
The swimmer – a British man in his early twenties – was swept away by a riptide on Sunday morning
whilst swimming in the Atlantic Ocean in Biscarrosse
Local rescue teams under the Centre Régional Opérationnel de Surveillance et de Sauvetage (CROSS) were scrambled
They directed a paddle and jet ski patrol to the swimmer’s last known location
They also called in a helicopter and diver from nearby Cazaux to assist in the search
The swimmer was found and brought back to the shore
Medical teams tried to resuscitate the Briton but he was pronounced dead at 12:15
rescuers were again scrambled to Biscarrosse – this time to the area’s lake – after a four-year-old almost drowned near the Navarrosse campsite
He was already suffering from a cardiac arrest (heart attack) when emergency services arrived and was airlifted to a hospital in Bordeaux
Maritime authorities issued a statement after the two incidents on Sunday
reminding holiday goers of the dangers of swimming in the Atlantic Ocean
They urged people to stick to approved sections of the coast when swimming
where lifeguards and rescue services are more able to help those in need
swimming in the Atlantic is dangerous because of the sudden emergence of riptides
Riptides – called baïnes in French – are prominent on France’s Atlantic coast
where seemingly calm water between beaches and sandbanks can suddenly be filled with a strong current
the main advice is not to swim against the current (i.e
but to conserve energy until the waters calm
and then swim parallel to the shore until out of the riptide
before swimming back to the beach diagonally

French military successfully tested the ASMPA-R medium-range air-to-ground missile
announces French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu
the tests were conducted as part of the Durandal military exercises
the missile test launch demonstrated the reliability of France's nuclear deterrent potential
"Operation Durandal: a strategic air force Rafale aircraft has just successfully carried out the first test launch of the upgraded supersonic ASMPA nuclear missile without onboard payload," Lecornu wrote
It is reported that the tests were conducted under the supervision of the military at bases in Biscarrosse
"The ASMPA upgrade program has allowed to enhance the missile's internal characteristics while maintaining confidence in the onboard nuclear component in the face of new threats posed by the emergence of future 4th-generation air-to-ground nuclear missiles," the French Ministry of Defense said
Russian President Vladimir Putin has increasingly begun to make statements regarding Russia's nuclear potential
This has forced Western countries to react to them
In particular, the US has announced the expansion of production of the largest non-nuclear bomb in the US - the precision-guided GBU-57 bomb.
President of Poland Andrzej Duda has stated readiness to host nuclear weapons in Poland. This idea was supported by the President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda.
The French Navy has successfully conducted its first simultaneous test launch of the Missile de Croisière Navale (MdCN)naval cruise missile from a frigate and a submarine
The test-firing was carried out by the service's lead multimission (FREMM) frigate Aquitaine
and one of its Suffren (Barracuda)-class nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs)
the Ministry of Armed Forces of France confirmed the same day
During the test the two vessels launched a co-ordinated strike against a ground target located at the DGA's Biscarrosse missile test centre at Landes in southwestern France – with both missiles engaging their target “in perfect synchronisation”
the Ministry of Armed Forces of France said
In a statement issued the same day the French Navy said the test was carried out in operational conditions to strengthen the operational know-how and combat skills of the service
“This ambitious firing was carried out in human and material conditions identical to those encountered in operation
The French Navy has thus demonstrated its ability to synchronise strikes against land in depth
“The tactical and technical lessons of this shooting will contribute to developing the combat skills of the French Navy
always engaged in high-intensity preparation.”
Developed by MBDA under a contract awarded by the Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA) in 2006
the MdCN is a long-range land-attack cruise missile intended to provide the French Navy with a sovereign deep-strike capability against high-value fixed targets
from its FREMM frigates and Suffren-class SSNs

World Rugby and the global rugby fraternity pays tribute to the former Ivory Coast international Max Brito who has passed away
Marcel Martin, Bernard Lapasset and the Fédération Française de Rugby among many others have worked hard to ensure support for Brito since 1995, and he has been an important presence at Rugby World Cups since.
Brito stayed involved in the sport he loved and his legacy and passion for rugby will continue through the Max Brito Academy, which was set up by the Fédération Ivoirienne de Rugby to train and inspire youngsters to play rugby in the Ivory Coast.

goes beyond its function to be part of the landscape
© Yohan ZerdounThe primary feature of the programme is its duality : a place for living/a place for working. This characteristic takes on a unique calibre at Biscarosse. Sited across from a forest, away from more bustling areas, the main housing block takes its silhouette from the traditional villas of the Landes. The north-south orientation of the string of offices creates a double usage of space.

[Update July 18 at 15:45 - 14,800 hectares have now been destroyed
and 27,700 people have been evacuated in all since last Tuesday (July 12)
Some 11,500 of these people have been moved today
and new evacuations are being carried out in Villandraut
The 1,700 firefighters now at the scene are fighting against 42C temperatures and winds which could reach 60km/h.]
Nearly 13,000 hectares of land have been destroyed by the two wildfires which have been burning for nearly a week near popular holiday spots in the southwestern department of Gironde
In its latest update yesterday evening (July 17)
the departmental prefecture stated that 1,500 firefighters had come from all over France to help tackle the “abnormal” fires
which began in the commune of La Teste-de-Buch near the Dune du Pilat and Landiras to the south of Bordeaux on July 12
the flames had been “rather well contained”
thanks to the lighting of “tactical fires” and the creation of a “firewall”
“Despite the deployment of significant ground and air crews
and has even got worse this [Sunday] afternoon,” the prefecture added
saying that the La Teste-de-Buch fire had reached the ocean and was moving southwards
You can see the flames reaching the beach in the tweet below

“the situation remains critical and is getting worse
with the fire progressing in different directions because of changing winds.”
The majority of the damage has been done around Landiras
where 9,000 hectares have gone up in flames
mostly from campsites and villages around La Teste-de-Buch
2,100 people were moved away from the village of Cabanac-et-Villagrains yesterday afternoon
interior minister Gérald Darmanin stated that “three extra planes
200 firefighters and 11 trucks” will be mobilised to assist with the firefighting effort

This comes as the whole of mainland France is placed under yellow
as the current heatwave reaches its peak and areas of the south-west are forecast temperatures of 40C and above today and tomorrow
The hot weather is creating very difficult conditions for firefighters as it helps to feed the flames along with the wind

The fires are largely moving over vast pine forests whose trees are dry and full of resin so highly flammable
The trees catch fire by their trunks and then fall to the ground
Local authorities have decided to begin cutting down trees which have not yet been touched

Patrick Davet mourned the loss of the local forest
which he described as part of the commune’s “heritage”
to which the population was “deeply attached”
has said: “Two fires of this magnitude and this severity [happening] at the same time in one department is a first for Gironde
The presence of two different fires is making it difficult to tackle the flames as firefighter crews must divide their resources between the sites
Residents have mobilised to assist firefighters in their efforts
“The solidarity movement is huge,” Ms Buccio said
including for the 16,000 evacuated residents and holidaymakers
many of whom are being put up by families in the villages where they are sheltering
Thousands of people have been evacuated from Gironde in southwest France as authorities battled wildfires which have also raged through Portugal and Spain as temperatures have soared. pic.twitter.com/wrebdOcvgy
president of the department’s fire and rescue service
has described the fire in Landiras as “a monster”
adding: “It has progressed extremely fast because of the dryness and the extreme heat
“It has reached a perimeter of more than 42 kilometres
so it is impossible to deploy our forces everywhere
we can add the fact that the erratic winds mean that the fire spreads on one side
forcing firefighters to constantly reposition themselves.”
The fire in La Teste-de-Buch began when a lorry caught fire on a forest road
It was initially suggested that an electric car was at the root of the fire
an idea which Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne wrongly confirmed on Friday
Gironde: Elisabeth Borne confirme qu'une voiture électrique est à l'origine du feu pic.twitter.com/BWxNYo97Ff
mayor Patrick Davet said that this was wrong and that the fire had indeed come from a lorry which broke down
The driver had tried to alert the authorities but found himself in an area with no phone signal
The source of the Landiras blaze is not yet known but an investigation into the fire has suggested that it may have been started deliberately

ArianeGroup and the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA-Direction Générale de l’Armement)
successfully completed the first flight test of an M51.3 missile from the Ballistic Launch Site (BLB) in Biscarrosse
This was the qualification flight of the new M51.3 version of the M51 missile
Operational deployment of the M51.3 is part of the upgrading of the French oceanic strategic deterrent force
Under seven months after the successful acceptance test firing of an M51 missile from the Le Terrible submarine
a test-flight configuration M51.3 missile without nuclear warhead was launched from the Biscarrosse base
“This success once again demonstrates the ability of ArianeGroup
together with its industrial ecosystem of over 600 national companies
to competently rise to such a technological challenge
We are now heading towards M51.3 system entry into operational service
is one of ArianeGroup’s two major programs
The ministerial and industrial teams involved in this test firing have once again shown their capacity for collaboration and demonstrated the highest level of collective commitment for DGA,” said Martin Sion
ArianeGroup is prime contractor for the M51 missile system on behalf of DGA and is the only company in Europe with the expertise to design
develop and build these strategic missiles
ArianeGroup is responsible for the entire lifecycle of the M51
ArianeGroup masters all technologies involved: including propellants
production facilities at its sites in Aquitaine (St Medard
near Paris (Les Mureaux) and in Britanny (Brest)
missile integration and testing facilities
implementation at the Ile Longue site for embarkation on board submarines
and control/command on board the submarines
ArianeGroup works with a national industrial ecosystem consisting of large corporations and hundreds of SMEs located throughout France
weighing over 50 metric tons and 12 meter long
is designed to be launched from a submerged submarine
it is a concentration of technologies combining power
The M51 is incrementally developed to enable it to consistently offer a credible response to a changing strategic and geopolitical context and to fulfil the requirements of France
This means that it has to be at all times at the cutting edge of technology and be able to permanently and reliably maintain its performance at the highest level

Launched from a platform representing a vessel
the MdCN missile validated its performance of autonomous navigation and terminal guidance by infrared recognition
The trial has been conducted by several state administrations
including DGA centres of expertise and test centres
as well as the programme’s prime contractor
The DGA awarded a contract to MBDA in 2006 for the supply of 200 MdCN naval missiles for installation on to the French Navy’s Frégate Européen multi-mission (FREMM) ships and its Barracuda nuclear-powered attack submarines by 2014 and 2017 respectively
Carried overtly or covertly on combat vessels such as frigates and submarines
the MdCN missile has been designed to provide a range of several hundred kilometres
The naval variant of the Storm Shadow/SCALP air-launched cruise missile system is being developed in two configurations; the first being a vertical launch from the FREMM vessels using the compact A70 vertical launcher
while the other is a submarine configuration
where the weapon can be launched through torpedo tubes
Based on the air-launched SCALP cruise missile
the MdCN also provides deep strike capabilities within enemy territory and destroys strategic infrastructure targets
capable of destroying infrastructure targets of high strategic value
underwent its first in-flight test from a vertical launcher in May 2010
while the first submarine trial was conducted successfully in June 2011
