Fabrice Rossignol and colleagues tested the limb repair methodology on three horses with cervical fractures that were referred to Clinique Vétérinaire de Grosbois in Boissy Saint Leger
The surgery stabilized the affected neck bones with screws and plates; on one horse
two vertebra were fused to each other for additional stabilization
All of the fractures healed and each horse returned to full work
The team concluded that using internal fixation measures on cervical fractures had minimal complications and a positive outcome

French researchers report success in treating fractured equine neck vertebrae using surgical repair techniques commonly reserved for mending limb fractures
A published paper describes the cases of three horses who sustained neck injuries in falls and were referred to Clinique Vétérinaire de Grosbois in Boissy Saint Leger (near Paris).

All of the horses showed signs of stiffness
incoordination and discomfort. After radiographs confirmed fractures of cervical vertebrae
each horse underwent surgery during which the affected bones were stabilized and repaired with screws and plates
two vertebrae were also fused to each other to further stabilize the injured area
All of the fractures healed without complication and each horse returned to full athletic function. The researchers conclude that “internal fixation of cervical fracture in these horses was associated with minimal complications
and was associated with healing and a highly functional outcome in all horses.”

André Dao’s remarkable debut novel began as an investigation into his paternal grandfather’s ten-year detention without trial by the Vietnamese government
It turned into a full quest for the truth of his family history
which spans the two Vietnam Wars: the first
from 1946 to 1954 (the first Indochinese War); the second
Dao was born in Australia to Vietnamese refugee parents. He’s a writer, editor and artist – and a refugee advocate who co-founded of Behind the Wire
an oral history project documenting people’s experience of immigration detention
Review: Anam – André Dao (Hamish Hamilton)
recorded materials and official documents: this proved impossible in dealing with repressed memory
and rendering the complexity of Dao’s family story
Anam is a work of imagination in which the narrator tries to allow all the rival voices and conflicting versions of this saga to be heard
this richly layered novel invites the reader to join Dao in disentangling different narrative threads
Readers familiar with Vietnamese history will notice the peculiar spelling of the book’s title: Anam, with one “n”. It’s a homonym of “Annam” (Pacified South)
a name imposed on Vietnam by the Chinese imperialists in the seventh century and perpetuated by the French colonialists
one the narrator has created and made his own through the torturous process of writing
which resonates beyond the Vietnamese diaspora to touch all diasporic peoples haunted by dispossession and unbelonging
the book intriguingly opens with two short entries
This points not only to the missing entries A and B
but also their recovery at the end of the novel – in the form of a series of derivatives: A
The significance of this deliberate structure is twofold
It references the three important periods in the Catholic calendar
and the three academic terms at Cambridge University
where the narrator completes his thesis on the life story of his grandparents
It’s a mise-en-abyme
highlighting the embedding of one story within another
in an intricate weaving of voices that alternates between the narrator’s present and his family’s past
it supports the narrator’s endeavour to portray his grandparents through their Catholic faith
This chapter is motivated by questions related to the grandfather’s choices: his desertion from the Viet Minh to join the (Western-backed) regime of South Vietnam
the narrator comes to an understanding of his grandfather’s decisions
Anam inhabits the lives of real political figures such as Nelson Mandela and Trịnh Đình Thảo
a famous French-educated Saigonese attorney whose participation in the anti-war and peace movement in Vietnam landed him in Chí Hòa Prison numerous times
Their fight and willingness to sacrifice for their cause shed light on the narrator’s enigmatic grandfather
Dao’s creation of a fictional Vietcong ghost in Chí Hòa Prison serves the same purpose
The grandfather and the ghost are on opposite sites in the Vietnam War and motivated by different ideologies
they share the same suffering and the same fate
The cover photo of the grandfather seems to suggest he’s the principal character in Anam
Her story reflects the novel’s themes of sacrifice
her life is characterised by her selfless care for her children and her faithful love for her husband
Despite her willingness to talk about herself
The narrator feels compelled to rely on different perspectives and multiple voices to cast light on his grandmother and her life experiences
Imaginative writing (in addition to family conversations and recorded interviews) is again an effective tool for the narrator
as he faces the complex task of telling his grandmother’s story
And he repeats his use of mise-en-abyme by inserting a minor (fictional) novel, The Crowned Mountain, (or Montagne Couronnée – the name of Laon’s Cathedrale Notre Dame de Laon) within the novel
which captures the essence of the grandmother through the symbolic figure of the Madonna
The last chapter coincides with the completion of the narrator’s academic term and his thesis
his long journey into writing his family’s past comes to an end
“Easter” signals resurrection and new beginnings
The grandfather symbolically returns to life
after his release from prison and his reunification with his family in France
And there’s renewal through future generations: in the form of two long
which the narrator addresses to his baby daughter
(These letters overlap the missing entries
With these letters
the narrator’s daughter becomes custodian of her great-grandparents’ memories – and the full story of Anam has been told and transmitted
Dao has kept the legacy of his grandparents alive through his literary creation
while showing compassion and generosity towards all choices
The novel’s themes are not uncommon in Vietnamese diasporic literature: separation of family into enemy camps
the difficulty of retrieving and representing memories
But Dao handles these themes in an original and convincing way
appealing emotionally and intellectually to his reader
allowing us to take part in his experimentation with different forms and narrative styles
and transporting us across all borders: not only of geography and time
Dao’s quest to include all perspectives means both Western and Eastern philosophy and beliefs are called upon to shed light on the past
Pivotal questions of social justice and forgiveness are illuminated through the Catholic concept of God’s love and mercy
but also through the Vietnamese concept of “phúc đức”
in which the forebear’s moral conduct is passed on as a legacy of blessings from one generation to the next
Dao gives us a privileged reading experience
he makes us feel the immensity of the task he has set himself – to ethically tell the story of Vietnam
And he makes us feel the full weight of his literary and family commitment to this project
a book on family memories is not a memorial to the past
It’s a “house with many rooms” and “many windows”: each with a different angle
Anam encourages us to reflect on the ethics of forgetting and remembering
And it inspires us to think of a way to create our own houses
from which to tell the stories of our past
It was an incredibly sad season. Zolder. Montreal. Hockenheimring. Like most competitive drivers, there was more to Pironi’s career than one race. This is the story of a determined young man who was fully focused on becoming his country’s first Formula 1 World Champion
He was almost there when dreams and his legs were shattered in a horrifying crash in Germany
His father ran a successful construction business
He won the Winfield Racing School Volant Elf Competition
which awarded him a fully funded season in Formula Renault for 1973
he won the Formula Renault championship and followed this two years later with the Super Renault championship
Pironi took third place in the 1977 European Formula 2 championship
His Renault teammate René Arnoux took the title
and Eddie Cheever was second driving for Ron Dennis’ Project 4 Racing
Pironi’s only victory of the season came in the penultimate round from pole position at Estoril
He made a big splash and impression on watching team principals by winning the prestigious Monaco Formula 3 race
Ken Tyrrell’s team was a favourite starting point for young
talented French drivers thanks to financial support from the Elf oil company
Pironi made it to the big league in 1978 and started from the final row in Buenos Aires on his F1 debut
His teammate and fellow Frenchman Patrick Depailler was the third man on the podium
Pironi picked up his first championship point in Round 2
He would again finish sixth in the next race at Kyalami
and Germany was his best showing of the season
six DNFs in sixteen races left him 15th in the championship with seven points
Highlight of the season was victory at Le Mans with Jean-Pierre Jaussaud in a Renault-Alpine
Staying with “Uncle Ken” for the 1979 season
Pironi made his first podium appearance at Zolder
The Belgian track would play an important part in his life
He signed off the ‘79 season on a high note with his second podium at Watkins Glen
Five DNFs and disqualification from the US Grand Prix West in Long Beach placed him joint tenth in the championship with his teammate Jean-Pierre Jarier
Pironi joined forces with ex-Rugby player and racing driver Guy Ligier and his French Blue racing team
with the beautiful Gitanes logo adorning the car
The season started with a DNF in Argentina
The first podium for the all-French combo came in the third race
where Pironi stood on the top step of the podium for the first time in Formula 1
His margin of victory over the second-place Williams of Alan Jones was a whopping 47
The Australian had started the race from pole position
There were three other podium finishes: second in his home grand prix at Paul Ricard and third in the final two races of the season in North America
His impressive race-winning 1980 season put Pironi on a winning horse for the 1981 season
The possibility of achieving a lifelong dream and desire to become the first French world champion was strong
His teammate would be a driver who Enzo treated like his own son and who was also French-speaking
While Gilles Villeneuve won back-to-back races in Monaco and Spain at Jarama and scored 25 points to finish seventh in the championship
Pironi had a maiden season at Maranello to forget
He failed to finish in the first three races
He did not appear on the podium throughout the season
The nine points he scored put him 13th in the championship
the beautiful 1982 Harvey Postlethwaite-designed 126C2 was a serious turbo-powered racing horse
had a fast car but was more likely to breakdown than take the chequered flag
The coast was clear for a Ferrari driver to sail to his and his nation’s first world champion
Scuderia Ferrari scored only one point from the first three races of the 1982 season
Pironi’s sixth-place finish in Brazil came only after race winner Nelson Piquet and runner-up Keke Rosberg were disqualified
Arnoux and Prost started from the front row
This put two second-row starters at the front
The first lead change between the Ferrari drivers came when Villeneuve briefly went off the track and Pironi grabbed the lead
The two exchanged leads many times during the race
with Villeneuve ahead going into the final lap
Pironi stunned him with a pass just after the Tamburello corner and went on to take his first Ferrari win
and he vowed never to speak with his teammate again
the French-Canadian racer called his friend Alain Prost and complained bitterly about Pironi late into the night
It was this conversation that led Prost to decide not to get this emotional if ever faced with a similar situation
that opportunity will raise its ugly head with his McLaren teammate some years later—at the same track
The next race was the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder
Villeneuve went out to better the time set by Pironi
the same driver he had outqualified in a third McLaren on his F1 debut at Silverstone five years earlier
and Villeneuve was ejected from the car with his seat
more death and destruction awaited only three races from Zolder
Pironi dedicated his pole position to Gilles
Most of the drivers were able to see and avoid the stranded car
The next three races firmly put Pironi as the favourite to win the Drivers’ Championship
He won the next round at Zandvoort and was second at Silverstone
the top four finishers were all home-grown talent
In a 2009 interview with F1Weekly podcast
and his new teammate Patrick Tambay was fourth
High-speed action in the rain at Hockenheim can lead to grave consequences
Pironi’s Ferrari was launched extremely high in the air after running into the back of Prost’s Renault
His image of the accident is seeing a Ferrari moving vertically high above his car
Serious leg and other injuries cut short a great racing career
The man he crashed into would go on to become their nation’s first world champion
It was a highly charged and emotional weekend for the Ferrari team as car #27 took victory with Tambay at the wheel
Pironi’s recovery was slow; after several surgeries and months of rehab
but after a test session in a Ligier at Dijon-Prenois
Pironi then turned his attention and energy to powerboat racing in his Colibri
he won the Norwegian round of the World Offshore Powerboat Championship
Colibri and its crew were competing off the coast of Isle of Wight
In pursuit of the race-leading boat at high speed
they encountered a wave from a passing oil tanker that flipped over
and all three crew members including Didier Pironi were killed instantly
Gilles Pironi also reached Formula 1 as an engineer with Mercedes
When Lewis Hamilton won the 2020 British Grand Prix
Gilles was on the podium to receive the constructors’ trophy
RedditGrowing reports of animals taking over paved plazas
and highway roads are popping up on Twitter and Reddit
showing wildlife taking advantage of having humans tucked away at home during the global pandemic
New photos and video posted on Twitter recently show two deer strutting down the street in Boissy-Saint-Leger
And then there are the goats that stormed Llandudno, a town in Wales. The group of shaggy Great Orme Kashmiri goats noshed on the town's manicured hedges (they prefer juicy berries and steer clear of thorns) — and apparently
Among the animals actually entering human spaces, here have been a few fake-outs, too: No, dolphins are not now swimming in Venice's canals. But real examples are showing up all over the internet, and nowhere is this perhaps more clear than on Reddit
"With a lot of the world's population being instructed to remain indoors, we're seeing more and more animals braving human environments, places that would once have been theirs,” moderator Thom Jackson, u/Fire_bucket
Jackson has overseen the subreddit for four years
Recent posts feature “more examples of fauna reclamation
Shots of plants, animals, or Earth herself reclaim human-built structures are reminders of humans’ place in the natural world
“There's something very beautiful about nature never giving up,” Jackson says
“and showing us that we're temporary in the scheme of things.”
These 15 amazing photos of animals capitalizing on their human-less freedom certainly speak to that tenacity
Seeing a rabbit or squirrel in your yard may not be unusual
While humans are stuck inside watching Tiger King, real-life mountain lions are out roaming the neighborhood, as user u/clicktosave posted on Reddit:
Comments joked about “government issued mountain lions," alluding to the big cats being used to keep people inside
But Netflix may be doing that job already
Usually full of humans, the empty streets of Lopburi, Thailand are overrun with macaque monkeys — and these guys are territorial
In fact, the unchecked monkeys have formed “rival gangs,” between those from the city and those who live in the nearby temples, and have been sparring with one another in the streets, Daily Mail reported
Apparently one nasty fight broke out over a banana
Without humans using and polluting the water
have become clear enough to see the wildlife swimming happily undisturbed below
“Those who dare to leave their homes might even spot schools of silver fish swimming undisturbed in the calm waters,” reports Reuters in a video posted on Twitter:
“The water is definitely clearer,” one local resident told Reuters
“You just have to look at the canal when water is very calm — there are no boats
crabs are showing up in the clear waters of another Venice
Twitter user Jane Wurwand shared photos of crabs visible on the bottom of the canal:
Is our planet slowly healing?” Wurwand writes
Feral hogs have already gained popularity for storming people’s yards in the United States — and the recent viral javelina video shows how quickly these hog cousins can dash down a boulevard
with the typically bustling Barcelona empty
“Boars descend from the mountains to the very center of Barcelona, after several days of people being locked at home,” writes Twitter user Alfons López Tena
any day is a good day for a trot down the road
This crew was spotted trotting down the road
as user u/readtheredthread posted on Reddit:
While deer may be harmless (as long as you’re not a yummy root vegetable)
there are other animals making their way into human-dominated places in India that are a little more concerning
This isn’t the first time leopards have been spotted in a nature-takeover moment
Photographer Shaaz Jung took this stunning photo of a leopard perched on a temple in southern India:
This is a very real photo of a thing that’s definitely happening
Wild turkeys have all but taken over Boston
“Harvard belongs to the turkeys, now,” said Twitter user Faine Greenwood
But the account Rogue Turkey claims that it’s always had a hold over the school:
We’re at the point where the incoming animals are self-advocating on Twitter
Coyotes are not the most exotic of animals — as Redditor u/meggali points out: “Urban coyotes are a thing all over North America.” However
“you don't see them lying down on the job very often.”
Must be relaxing without hordes of humans flocking to get the best view in town
With no humans around at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium
staff decided to take some Emperor penguins on a field trip
and Wellington had a chance to observe fish tanks and visit the information center
The videos are as adorable as you’d expect:
Nara Park in Japan is famous for its friendly fauna
and is home to more than 1,200 wild sika deer
interacting with humans — and accepting the food they offer
With fewer humans out enjoying the park, the deer have taken to the streets, tweeted reporter Kurumi Mori:
Mori followed up her tweet with a video of the empty park — and some very persistent deer:
“That’s a first,” tweeted Charlotte Simmonds after spotting a raptor of turkeys on an elementary school playground
Compared with wild turkeys’ already unsettling behavior — as shown in a 2017 video of turkeys circling a dead cat — this is actually pretty normal and chill
Mischievous monkeys were already a common presence in Delhi
Some estimates suggest 4,000-5,000 Rhesus Macaques live in the city
regularly snatching food and messing with members of parliament’s paperwork
in the emptiness of usually bustling places
even monkeys out and about seem to be in on a post-apocalyptic backdrop
As editor Nistula Hebbar tweeted
this lone monkey has a real Will Smith in “I Am Legend” thing going on:
There may not have been any dolphins in the Venice canals
but the sleek swimmers graced another part of Italy with their presence
Without cruise ships and ferries around, dolphins visited the docks of Port of Cagliari in Sardinia, Italy
