Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center held its ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday
where they welcomed members of the Bon Secours family as well as local and state officials to view the completed building
The first patient is expected on Wednesday
Market President for Bon Secours Hampton Roads Pat Davis-Hagens said the vision for this building started 10 years ago
“We want it to be a place of hope and healing and a bold vision for the future,” she said during the ceremony
“Today is the result of years of collaboration
strategic foresight and deep initiated commitment to improving health and well being of the communities that we serve
What we’re opening today isn’t just an expanded hospital
it’s a place where lives have changed
and neighbors will be cared for with excellence and compassion.”
Erin Clark-Lupo provided a blessing for the Center as the mission vice president of Bon Secours Hampton Roads
Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center President Andy Spicknall spoke about the building’s “state of the art” innovative technology and use of artificial intelligence that allow nurses to spend more time with their patients
Spicknall said that completing this project is personal for him
as he was part of the center’s original planning process
“This expansion will transform an already robust ambulatory campus into a comprehensive medical facility,” he said
and integrates the existing emergency department
for those who need surgery or need to be admitted to the hospital
those patients no longer have to travel long distances or travel to another city to receive care,” Spicknall said
The Center also features Bon Secours Mercy Health’s first “smart” hospital room
which uses “next-generation AI-powered technology.”
All inpatient rooms are equipped with electronic white boards that will display information about the patient’s care team
what labs have been performed and when results can be expected
There are also sensors in each inpatient room to allow for increased patient safety
Sensors will alert nurses in real time to potential safety risks
such as a high fall-risk patient attempting to get out of bed on their own
“All of this technology comes together to keep patients informed about their care
and allows our nurses to spend more time at the bedside with their patients and less time on administrative tasks,” Spicknall said
vice chair of the Bon Secours Hampton Roads Board of Directors
said the opening of the Center is a “proud moment” not only for Suffolk but for the entire Hampton Roads region
“As someone who has spent her life mentoring others
I often remind people it’s not just about what you build
and this hospital was built for all of us,” she said
Fairchild spoke about how while innovative technology is crucial
it’s nothing without “compassionate caregivers” using it
It’s about creating an environment where people feel seen
and valued from the moment they walk through our doors,” she said
“You’ve heard today about the innovation
the technology that’s making this one of the most advanced hospitals in the region

and added concourse space are all part of the $300 million renovation and expansion plans of the Bon Secours Wellness Arena (BSWA)
The venue is exploring funding options for the project
which is expected to be completed in downtown Greenville in the coming years
As part of a Greenville Area District (GAD) comprehensive master plan announcement on April 17
the two-phase project is estimated to cost around $300 million and would see the 25-year-old building at 650 N
In an attempt to stay competitive with other regional stadiums
the new proposed deal aims to stay up to date with the current needs of touring artists and athletes
It anticipates better connectivity to downtown and an increased financial impact on the area
"We want the arena to be more than just a place to see events
Our vision is to build a community for entertainment," said Beth Paul
general manager of the Bon Secours Wellness Arena
BSWA officials announced a reported $150 million plan to improve current conditions
including renovations to the front and back of the house
the Greenville Arena District unveiled details of the plans
along with an additional $120 million 6,500-seat amphitheater
and a parking structure to be built after the arena upgrades are complete
"The master plan we are presenting is about updating a building and protecting a vital community asset for the next 25 years and beyond," said Neetu Patel
Paul anticipates that BSWA will generate around $56 million for the city of Greenville on an annual basis
a six percent increase from their current contributions
The added amphitheater is expected to bring $63 million per year in economic productivity
so we need to renovate in order to maintain the level of business we have," Paul said
More Downtown Entertainment: 10 Broadway shows coming to Peace Center in Greenville for 25-26 season, what to know to go
Bon Secours Wellness Arena will expand its reach westbound toward Church Street by adding a new concourse area
and entrance way that marks a new era in downtown entertainment
Visible changes to the arena include introducing a new grand lobby area toward the west end of the building to provide a safer and efficient way to enter
The building would get a new outer architectural shell at its base
creating a brand-new face for the arena that debuted in 1998
Here are a few more of the proposed physical changes to the arena:
A grand entryway into the arena with a new building facade design. An improved and expanded concourse area (adding 22,000 square feet)
and entrance space leading into the building
and adding more room for retail stores and merchandising.Expanded concession stands and terrace areas
and restroom areasNew hospitality experiences around the concourse area.Behind the scenes
Greenville Arena District shareholders will first address nearly 18,000 square feet of back-of-house operations through a renovation process to better accommodate staff
arena upgrades that ticketed visitors might not see include:
"It is my belief that in order to remain competitive
we need to improve the area; to make it a world-class destination
a place where artists can come and feel welcome," Paul said
Paul visualizes the new concourse as a place to increase business
transforming the current 15-foot-wide concourse into a much more spacious venue to accommodate visitors
yet equally important part of the master plan announcement
the Greenville Arena District is proposing a $120 million amphitheater project that would open as part of a second phase of expansion
According to Bill Fox of the Hughes Agency
the function and success of a new amphitheater could pay off within two years
with the $63 million in annual economic productivity the venue is expected to generate
The idea for this project began around 2023 and was finalized with the completion of the master plan and economic impact studies
The next steps to implementing these upgrades to the building are finalizing a funding plan over the next six to eight months
which will rely on contributions from the city
Fox mentioned the possibility of asking for Greenville County hospitality tax and state legislature funds
could not provide a status on the amount of money raised for the project thus far
but GAD stakeholders hope to begin improvements by 2026 or early 2027
"The outcome is a plan that harmonizes innovation with fiscal responsibility," Paul said
"We will continue to seek input and refine our plans as we move forward."
As regional upgrades to the BJCC Arena in Alabama (2021)
the newly built Enmarket Arena in Georgia (2022)
and a $1 billion development into the Lenvo Center in Raleigh
North Carolina have recently been announced
hopes to similarly usher in a new era of entertainment in downtown Greenville

Nearly two decades after the idea for a Cancer Survivors Park grew from a high school senior project to beautify an area outside a local cancer treatment center
Greenville Cancer Survivors Park will hold its grand opening this weekend
A public ribbon cutting will be held at 11 a.m
“The Dedication to a Vision of Hope and Healing” will feature community leaders sharing the story about the creation of the park and plans for the Center for Hope & Healing
a space for community celebrations and survivorship programs
The ceremony will include recognition of the Greenville Health System
and other contributors who made the park possible
“The Garden Party,” will be held from 6 p.m
The fundraising soiree will feature music by Trey Francis
Guests at the party will be able to walk through the park and hear stories about the design and meaning
Tickets are $125 and are available at cancersurvivorspark.org/the-garden-party.php
Proceeds will benefit the Cancer Survivors Park Alliance’s education programs
A free Cancer Survivors Day Celebration will be held at the park from 1 p.m
Activities include walking tours of the park
A survivors recognition ceremony and photo are set for 2:32 p.m
Registration is requested but not required
“We are excited to be celebrating a significant milestone — the transformation of a challenged piece of property into a beautiful park
We still have much to do as we transition from bricks and mortar to a focus on incorporating the creative features
and resources that are the essence of our vision — creating a space for hope and healing,” said Kay Roper
executive director of the Cancer Survivors Park Alliance
As the functions of parks grow more complex
public-private partnerships have increased as a funding source
Greenville’s Unity Park is an example of many of the current trends in building urban parks — a greater reliance on public-private partnerships
the conversion of postindustrial sites into green space
and construction of facilities that accommodate fluctuation in water levels to help water quality and flooding issues
“Parks are no longer simply places for recreation
That’s why public-private partnerships are so important,” said Catherine Nagel
“Really where public-private partnerships shine is that they bring in more resources and skills.”
While Greenville has been known for public-private partnerships for downtown development projects such as the Hyatt
Mayor Knox White said Unity Park is the city’s first example of a true public-private partnership on a park
The city has earmarked $20 million in hospitality tax revenue for the new park over 10 years and wants private partners to contribute another $20 million
Separate from the city’s fundraising efforts is one led by Community Journals’ chairman and co-founder Doug Greenlaw to raise money for a veterans memorial in the park
Greenlaw is a founder of the Upstate charter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart
“Public-private partnerships have become a critical funding tool in the toolbox,” said Kevin O’Hara
vice president of urban and government affairs for the National Recreation and Parks Association
public-private partnerships are good for parks.”
Chicago’s Millennium Park was a result of a public-private partnership
Mayor Richard Daley originally proposed construction of a parking garage with a landscaped greenroof on land that had been parkland
The original plan financing called for $120 million from parking revenue bonds and $30 million from private resources
plans for the park had changed drastically
A cycle center provides heated bicycle parking
There are outdoor art galleries and a promenade
and the Pritzker Pavilion that hosts the Grant Park Musical Festival
Underneath the park is a 4,000 space parking garage
the park was the Midwest’s most popular tourist attraction
There’s a wide range of how park public-private partnerships are structured
“There’s a real range of public-private partnership models to consider,” she said
“The key is to fit the model to your community
Some cities have a strong base of philanthropic organizations
City Park would also mirror the trend in other cities where postindustrial sites are turned into parks and green space
those sites are on waterfronts and riverfronts
areas that some cities turned their backs on and became nasty places to which people didn’t want to go
a waterfront cargo yard was turned into one of New York’s signature parks
The city redirects real estate taxes from residential and commercial developments in the project zone
creating a self-sustaining revenue stream that is far less dependent on concessions and permits for special events than signature parks in other major cities
“Parks are helping to revitalize cities and put them on the map,” Nagel said
“It’s exciting that those projects are not just happening in the largest cities but in medium and small cities as well.”
Bon Secours is planning a 200,000-square-foot critical care facility for its St
Mary’s Hospital campus as part of a larger $370 million project
Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly reported the height of the new building proposed for St
Bon Secours has a massive project on tap to improve its critical care facilities at St
The planned $370 million expansion of the western Henrico hospital would feature the construction of a eight-story structure
renovations of existing facilities and other projects on the campus off Monument Avenue
The new building would replace existing parking spots and a patient drop-off area at the hospital’s main entrance fronting Bremo Road
The 200,000-square-foot building would cost $306 million and provide larger
more modern spaces for the hospital’s critical care operations

The project would also expand the number of bassinets at St
The hospital plans to make all its beds private as part of the project
Currently the hospital has a mixture of private and shared rooms for patients
Other upgrades included in the project are improvements to the hospital’s loading docks and main entrance
Bon Secours plans to break ground on the project this summer
and work on the tower itself is expected to start in the fall
The plan is to open the new building in early 2028
DPR was tapped to serve as the project’s general contractor
Architecture firm Perkins&Will is handling the project’s design
CMTA and Simpson Gumpertz & Heger are also involved in the project
Bon Secours intends to rework the hospital’s entrance and pedestrian access

The project is anticipated to be covered by an upcoming fundraising campaign and funds from Bon Secours Mercy Health
the parent company of Bon Secours Richmond
A portion of proceeds from a $600 million bond sale for capital projects in the Richmond and Hampton Roads areas would go toward the St
The new facility is expected to require 375 new full-time employees at the hospital
Bon Secours planned to file plans for the tower project with Henrico on Thursday afternoon
The project would require zoning approval from the Board of Supervisors to accommodate the height of the building and the helipad that would be located atop it
The tower would include six operating rooms and two catheterization labs among other facilities
The project would shift some existing beds at St
Lee said the tower would nearly double the hospital’s critical care capacity

The hospital’s helipad would be relocated to the roof of the tower from its current location in the parking lot
and the existing pad would be converted into parking spots
So that helipad will be able to drop those patients directly to their destination in a more efficient manner,” Lee said
The spaces in the hospital currently occupied by the facilities that are to be moved to the new tower would be filled with other operations

The project would also overhaul the hospital’s loading dock area on Libbie Avenue
which dates to the 1960s and is considered unsuitable for modern semi-trailer trucks
Trucks currently have to queue up on the side of the road
and they have to block traffic while they back into the current facility
including ambulances coming from Monument Avenue trying to get into St
“Our new loading dock with three truck bays will help eliminate some of this traffic,” St

It appears to me that parking will be a problem going forward
It’s consistently addressed in literally every project
Parking is always brought up as the developmental boogeyman and yet everyone in the region
has always has a place to park at or near their destination
there are plans to increase frequency of transit around this area and to add more bicycle and pedestrian connections along Monument and Libbie
Mary’s you would know that parking really is a problem
But the good thing is they do have a parking lot they could put another deck on if they need to
but I usually bike or take the bus so parking isn’t a problem
I am totally used to the holier than thou use public transportation posts on nearly every thread at Bizsense but come TF on …
you are going to bike over to your colonoscopy
Sometimes I wish the public transportation advocates would check the GRTC routes more often
GRTC changed a lot of routes in the past decade…it’s not as simple as hoping on a bus and going straight to your destination anymore
how often are you unable to find a parking spot
You bring up parking so often and I’ve never had that issue anywhere in Richmond
I agree St Mary’s is congested but I’ve always found a parking spot even if it was at the top of the deck
At the end of the day St Mary’s will be sure to have enough parking because otherwise they won’t have enough patients to pay for the new addition
they aren’t adding many if any additional beds other than bassinets
Staff already spill over onto the side streets adjacent like Pratt
I’m someone who Ebikes but I’m not going to do so in the weather we’ve had lately
Mary’s actually has a plenty of parking
The decks are just poorly designed for finding a space
Everyone tries to find a space a space in the first deck
when there are usually plenty in the 2nd and 3rd decks
Some electronic signage similar to what RIC has in the daily parking decks could go a long way
I can usually find a place in the lot.A little patience is all it takes
Parking requirements are per the county zoning ordinance and they won’t be able to get a building permit without complying
the parking requirements for a hospital in Henrico are partially based on the bed count
If they are converting semi private rooms to my private without any additional beds
the parking requirement and the demand will not change much
I never have trouble finding parking there

(WAVY) — Patients at Bon Secours’ Liver Institute of Hampton Roads in Newport News are frustrated after they were told the facility would close and consolidate with another Bon Secours facility in Richmond
More than 42,000 cases of liver cancer are diagnosed each year in the U.S.
that may become more difficult for patients living in eastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina with the impending closure
Miranda Frazier was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2019 and had a transplant in 2021
Mitchell Shiffman for saving her life when he spotted signs early on of organ rejection.“Through the course of treatment
things declined rapidly,” Frazier said
He was able to pretty much describe to me exactly what was going to happen even though I was in denial.”But after Bon Secours announced recently they were closing their Liver Institute in Newport News and consolidating with the Richmond office
Frazier and other patients will have that much farther to drive
which some believe won’t be so easy.“You don’t see a hepatologist unless you have issues with your liver,” said David Vest
“That additional hour to have to go to Richmond now
they may not be able to make that hour journey a couple times a week
Vest has been a patient of Shiffman’s for about a year.“I have a rare disease
“They’re the only ones who knew how to track it down.”He said when he asked staff why they were closing
they told him they didn’t know why.“The only thing I can think of is that Bon Secours management must be making bonuses off of cutting costs,” Vest said
“That’s the only thing that makes sense
although it doesn’t make sense if you’re cutting costs to close down something that’s actually making money.”Until they close the office June 30
he said the Liver Institute is the only local facility that specializes in liver issues.“I’m just
Said Frazier: “I want others to have a great outcome like I did
I want other patients to be able to get a transplant as well and receive the care that I received.”
said it regularly evaluates how best to serve patients “while serving as good stewards of our health ministry and its resources.”
Bon Secours continuously evaluates how best to meet our community and patient needs while serving as good stewards of our health ministry and its resources
After thoughtful and careful consideration

A new master plan offers a glimpse into the future of downtown Greenville’s Bon Secours Wellness Arena
a new entrance and a dramatically expanded concourse
Beth Paul
said the master plan outlines a new design for the arena that will best serve the fans
The entertainment and sports venue located at 650 N
in Greenville has hosted over 3,000 events attended by 12 million fans since it opened in 1998
LS3P of Greenville led the development of the arena’s 25-year master plan with the help of Gensler and LMN Architects
Public surveys and stakeholder meetings were conducted for the master plan
The team also completed an existing conditions assessment of the arena
identifying a need for more space to enhance guest and client programming
The nine-month planning process resulted in a comprehensive roadmap for the future of the Bon Secours Wellness Arena and the surrounding campus
The master plan unveils a new look for the Bon Secours Wellness Arena
Major facade improvements inspired by Greenville’s landscape are recommended to create a more vibrant and inviting arena
said the new exterior design encourages activities to occur both inside and outside the facility
“The current arena is typical for the time in which it came to life and those tended to be extremely introverted buildings
The attraction was the event inside,’ Edwards said
that has evolved to there being more than just the event inside
that the facility has to be more a part of its community.”
Ideas to transform the arena’s entrances are outlined in the master plan
a new main entrance with a large entry lobby is proposed to be built on the west side of the arena facing the current VIP parking lot
The existing conditions assessment found the arena’s 28,000-square-foot concourse level also needed to be expanded by 22,000 square feet
the master plan proposes building out the west side of the existing structure
The expansion does not include increasing the arena’s current seating capacity
The additional space would allow for improved guest circulation
new hospitality experiences and an expanded outdoor terrace
The arena’s central kitchen would also be relocated to the concourse level for improved food service
Approximately 18,000 square feet of space is recommended to be added to the arena’s existing 14,000 square foot event level
marshaling area and storage space would be constructed to elevate the arena’s back-of-house operations
These enhancements are designed to help the arena stay competitive in the Southeast region when booking concerts
sporting events and other types of entertainment
Paul explained they want to make sure the arena doesn’t lose events moving forward due to the building’s current size constraints
“We just want to deliver the best possible arena that Greenville can have,” Paul said
Plans for the arena also include adding more locker rooms with coach offices, and enhanced green rooms to be used by the arena’s clients and partners like the Greenville Swamp Rabbits
The hockey team has played home games at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena since 2010
Tim Vieira
said the proposed enhancements to the event and concourse levels would benefit the hockey team’s players
what they’ve laid forth as plans for moving forward,” Vieira said
accomplishes … all of what we would be looking for
Proposals for the future of the Bon Secours Wellness Arena also extend beyond the existing building
The master plan offers ideas to enhance the 12-acre campus bordered by North Academy Street
a majority of the campus is used for parking
Paul said they studied several opportunities for the site that would provide recreation
culture and entertainment to Greenville County
The master plan proposes building a 6,500-seat amphitheater on the property for outdoor concerts and community events
Paul said the open-air venue would be able to host approximately 30 concerts per year
“The beautiful thing about South Carolina is you can be outdoors from March to November and so just thrilled with the way the vision came together and that we really identified something that I think is going to benefit the community tremendously,” Paul said
the amphitheater would generate an estimated $15 million annually in compensation and $63 million in annual economic activity
Approximately 545 permanent jobs would also be created by the new venue
An outdoor greenspace would be built next to the amphitheater
separating it from a proposed mixed-use development with retail and food options
Edwards explained the shopping area was designed to help further activate the site and provide more fan and guest experiences
The amphitheater and other campus elements are designed to sit above a 1,000-space parking podium along North Church Street
The proposed plans do not recommend the Greenville Arena District acquiring additional land for the campus
Paul said she wouldn’t rule it out for the future
What proposed addition interests you most for the Bon Secours Wellness Arena and campus?
It’s important to note that the master plan offers a visionary look as to what the Bon Secours Wellness Arena could be in the future
the Greenville Arena District’s priority will be to complete the expansion and improvements of the Bon Secours Wellness Arena
The project is estimated to cost $150 million to complete
Paul announced April 17 the estimated cost for the amphitheater and district renovations is $120 million
A final budget and construction timeline have yet to be determined for the proposed district improvements
Paul and her team will start to focus on confirming funding sources for the arena renovations now that the master plan has been created
The Greenville Arena District plans to provide significant capital investment for the project
Paul explained they will also request state funding
and have discussions with the city and county governments to see what funding opportunities are available
Detailed designs for the arena project will be created once the Greenville Arena District has a strong understanding and commitment to the project’s funding
The finalized plan is hoped to be completed by the end of 2025
Renovations to the arena are anticipated to begin in 2026 or early 2027 and should take approximately two years to complete
We will remain operational through the construction process,” Paul said
during the summer months that are generally slow where we can take advantage of some of that downtime.”

The team later rebranded as the Greenville Swamp Rabbits in 2015
The Carolina Rhinos existed as part of the Arena Football League's developmental division in 2000 and only lasted two seasons at the Bi-Lo Center

which played at the Bi-Lo Center in 2009 and 2010
The National Basketball Association (NBA) once had ties to the Upstate
as the Greenville Groove served as a minor league affiliate between 2001 and 2003
The Groove won the D-League Finals over the North Charleston Lowgators in its inaugural season
The SEC Women's Basketball Tournament first appeared in Greenville in 2005 and has since hosted eight total conference series through the 2025 season

The owner and operator of Bon Secours Wellness Arena in downtown Greenville has unveiled an ambitious master plan that reimagines the facility’s 12-acre site as an entertainment district featuring an amphitheater and gateway to the city
Amphitheater part of new Bon Secours Wellness Arena master plan
chairman of the Greenville Arena District Board
general manager of Bon Secours Wellness Arena
the comprehensive plan encompasses significant renovations and expansions to the 25-year-old
15,500-seat sports and entertainment arena to ensure its long-term success and growth in the competitive Southeast
The master plan envisions a new 6,500-seat outdoor amphitheater
generating $15 million annually in compensation and an estimated $63 million each year in economic impact
This substantial economic boost would further solidify the arena’s role as a key driver of Greenville’s economy
“This is our opportunity to build on the legacy of those who came before us — from the families of Little Texas to the visionaries who constructed Memorial Auditorium and the business and community leaders who created this arena 25 years ago,” Patel said in the release
“The master plan we are presenting today is about updating a building and protecting a vital community asset for the next 25 years and beyond.”
To ensure the master plan reflects the community’s collective vision
the planning process included extensive community engagement
including focus groups with former residents of Little Texas
shadowing sessions with members of the disability community
surveys of thousands of guests and premium seat holders
and meetings with neighborhood representatives
the master plan emphasizes GAD’s commitment to being the Upstate’s premier hub for live events and concerts
It aims to generate economic activity that significantly benefits local businesses
and enhances the region’s cultural vibrancy and quality of life
the Arena has proudly served as a cornerstone of entertainment and economic vitality
we needed a comprehensive roadmap for a future where we remain a top destination for world-class entertainment and sporting events,” Paul said in the release
and aspirations of our entire community and positions the Arena for the next 25 years and beyond.”
Six core principles guided the master plan: enhancing connectivity to downtown
and practicing financial stewardship while honoring the site’s history
The rapidly evolving entertainment industry also influenced the vision
This involved addressing new artist needs for staging and production
adapting to shifting audience expectations
and responding to increased competition from venues in the Southeast and across the nation
“Community engagement and collaboration with our neighbors and stakeholders have been priorities from the beginning,” Paul said in the release
“The outcome is a plan that harmonizes innovation with fiscal responsibility and enthusiasm with practicality
This is not the conclusion of our community engagement process
We will continue to seek input and refine our plans as we move forward.”

Health care system Bon Secours and commercial health insurer Cigna have reached a deal to keep more than 30,000 Virginians in network
averting interruptions in care and higher health care costs for patients after months of protracted contract negotiations and uncertainty
reached by the Catholic health care system and insurer April 1 following a 24-hour deadline extension
ambulatory surgical centers and other care centers will remain in network and accessible to Virginia residents whose workplace health insurance is provided by Cigna

executive medical director of women’s and children’s services for Bon Secours Richmond
which the health care system said were not “keeping pace with inflation and are below fair market standards
Being fairly reimbursed by our payer partners [insurance companies] is what enables us to continue to deliver the highest quality of care to our patients.”
had alleged that Bon Secours wanted a rate increase equaling 30% over five years
The dispute had been dragging on since August of 2024
fueling concern from patients insured through Cigna as they watched and wondered if they would still be able to see their preferred provider at Bon Secours facilities should negotiations fail
But a state law enacted in 2024 allows health care providers to continue treating patients at least 90 days after the provider disconnects from the insurer’s network
Pregnant people can continue receiving care during the postpartum period under the measure
Patients with a life-threatening condition may receive up to 180 days of care after their provider goes out of network
and people being treated at in-patient facilities may continue to be cared for by their provider until they are discharged
The following Bon Secours hospitals in Virginia are affected by the health system’s renewed agreement with Cigna:

Bon Secours Mercy Hospital will unveil its new Harbour View medical center to the public during a community open house on May 3 and a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 5
The first patient will be treated on May 6
The new building at 1020 Bon Secours Drive will add 18 “smart” inpatient rooms and four operating rooms to the preexisting Bon Secours campus
President Andy Spicknall and Vice President of Nursing Kristen McSorley highlighted some of the most anticipated features
The second floor is home to large family waiting areas and inpatient rooms
McSorley pointed out the nursing station alcoves along the walls between patient rooms
These alcoves will help improve workflow and increase patient safety
allowing a nurse to sit at a computer while still having a direct line of sight to their patient
The inpatient rooms also have frosted glass doors
The windows looking into the patient’s room from the nurse alcove are controlled by a switch that flips between frosted and clear glass
The switches are located on the inside and outside of the room
so both nurses and patients can control the level of privacy
Spicknall added that patients will have increased privacy even from the hallway
it’s difficult to see into a room while walking past
All of the patient rooms have pull-out sofa beds
McSorley said they asked their staff what was important to them when designing the new rooms
The hospital staff decided on everything from the location of the computer to the shelving units and gloves and hand sanitizer to ensure a better workflow
The bathrooms are also bigger and redesigned to allow nurses to pivot and turn with their patients
New electronic whiteboards and patient room plates were also created with nurse requests in mind
The electronic whiteboards “adhere to what the patients need to understand and see,” McSorley said
She added patients will also be able to see what doctors and nurses are treating them
The room plate on the outside of the patient’s door will display any information visitors and employees should know before entering
This could include taking necessary precautions against an infectious disease or knowing about any mobile limbs
“This actually is derived from an order in the computer,” McSorley said about the room plates
Without the use of the electronic nameplates
the same information is displayed on a laminated sheet that’s displayed on the door
Spicknall said they are calling the rooms “smart” patient rooms
because of all the added technology features
In addition to the whiteboard and room plate
he said the rooms will have sensors to detect if a fall-risk patient is trying to get up on their own
The sensor will send an alert to the nurse prior to the bed alarm going off so they can intervene before a patient gets hurt
Sensors on all the patient beds also provide time frames for when the patient should be repositioned to avoid pressure injuries from lying in one position for too long
The medical center team hopes to implement AI technology after the center opens
converting conversations between employees and patients into digital notes
“That is one of the pieces of technology nursing is most excited about,” McSorley said
“Because it allows them to spend more time with their patient
They’re not running off to the computer trying to document all of that
the room is alleviating that stressor for them so that then they can attend to the patient’s pain
do whatever they need to do in that moment to ensure that the patient is well taken care of.”
Pre-operative rooms are located on the first floor
This is where patients will go to be prepared for procedures
McSorley explained this includes going over any pre-admission testing or labs
and starting an IV or any kind of pre-operative fluids
Spicknall said one of the main focuses when designing the pre-operative rooms was to ensure patient privacy with sliding frosted glass doors
which is also used for the inpatient rooms
“A lot of times there may be curtains or bays in these pre-operative areas
to create that sense of privacy for our patients
knowing this is a very anxious time for our patients
and then you’ll see in a lot of our rooms
we’re able to get a lot of natural light into that space
just to help patients remain calm as they’re preparing for their surgery,” he said
Along the perpendicular wall are a few post-surgical rooms
where patients will go after waking up from anesthesia and be taken care of by a nurse
McSorley said two nursing stations in the middle of the floor are better for nurse and patient flow than one station
The four operating rooms are equipped to handle minimally invasive robot-assisted surgeries with large screens to display what the robot sees
and orthopedic surgeries will be the most commonly treated
McSorley said visitors are encouraged to look at the operating rooms to help them feel more comfortable with any surgeries they may have at the new medical center
Spicknall said the building’s groundbreaking started in October 2022
and construction was completed on March 31
After the ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 5
the center will see its first patient on May 6
Spicknall said about 100 new employees were hired to staff the building
the remaining medical supplies will be brought in and the staff will run drills to familiarize themselves with the layout of the building and where all their materials will be kept
“This is state-of-the-art technology within healthcare,” Spicknall said
“and it’s really exciting that we’re the first one within Bon Secours Mercy Health

Bon Secours will be considered out-of-network for Cigna Healthcare unless a new contractual agreement is reached before then
This will only affect patients in Virginia and Ohio
Affected Bon Secours hospitals in Hampton Roads are the Mary Immaculate Hospital
According to the Bon Secours website
Cigna’s payments to Bon Secours are no longer enough to cover the cost of provided care
nurses and caregivers is not adequate to account for the cost of providing safe
“We need all of our payer partners to do their part
By failing to offer a sustainable contract
Cigna may be putting your in-network access to the facilities and providers you know and trust at risk.”
The website states that Cigna users who will have ongoing treatment or procedures scheduled after April 1 should immediately contact Cigna and ask for approval of Continuity of Care
This will allow patients to continue using Bon Secours at the in-network rates
Cigna has not proved a rate increase to Bon Secours in over six years
The release also states that “Cigna’s high rates of claim denials have led to significant delays in life-sustaining care and created operational challenges to efficient patient care.”
Cigna’s website states Bon Secours is asking for a rate increase of more than 27% over five years
A comment provided by a Cigna Healthcare spokesperson= reads as follows:
“It is disappointing that Bon Secours Mercy Health is choosing to leave our network on April 1
Bon Secours Mercy Health notified us of their intention to leave unless we agree to their significant rate increases across multiple markets
which would be detrimental to our local customers and their families
We hope that Bon Secours Mercy Health will do what is right for the people of Virginia and continue working with us to reach an affordable agreement.”
Cigna also urges Bon Secours patients to see if they qualify for Continuity of Care
Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center is set to open on May 6

— Bon Secours is launching a new lung cancer detection and management program called the Lung Nodule Program
This comes as South Carolina’s lung cancer rate remains higher than the national average
“The goal is to ensure faster follow-up times for at-risk patients
because we know when it comes to potential cancer diagnoses
Nathanael Phillips with Bon Scour’s Palmetto Pulmonary and Critical Care
The program will be run out of the Palmetto Pulmonary and critical care facility located in downtown Greenville
This program is referral-based and targets patients who receive certain lung cancer screening results
we immediately reach out to initiate the referral process
We also work very closely with the pulmonologists to allow for a fast and seamless transfer of patient information
This reduces the chances of oversight and ensures any at-risk patients don’t fall through the cracks,” said Bon Secours nurse practitioner Chelsea O’Brien
Doctors with the program use the Lung Imaging Reporting and Data System or Lung-RADS
This system breaks low-dose CT screenings exams into categories that helps standardize and manage decisions
Patients who receive a number of three or higher are eligible for referral into the program
The program officially launched in March and numerous patients are already being treated
