Consultation opens on projects in Paris suburbs
Two new data center projects in the suburbs of French capital Paris have been put out for consultation
Residents in the department of Val-de-Marne
are currently having their say on a plan from Segro to build a data center at the Petits Carreaux business park near Bonneuil-sur-Marne
and a scheme from Icade which would see a hyperscale facility constructed at its Paris-Orly Business Park in Rungis
Segro, which announced plans to grow its data center business last year
wants to construct a 13,800 sqm (148,541 sq ft) data center complex at the 15-hectare Petits Carreaux business park
which is currently home to more than 150 companies
the development would house an electrical substation and a backup power system comprising 24 generators running on HVO
Waste heat from the site would be collected and could be used in district heating systems located in Bonneuil or nearby Sucy
It is estimated that the data center will create up to 70 full-time jobs. The consultation period runs until June 10
plans to spend €280 million ($318m) building a new hyperscale data center
The project would be located at Icade’s Paris Orly-Rungis business park
and span some 65,000 sqm (699,654 sq ft) and offer an eventual 130MW
It is proposing to build a heat recovery system
with waste heat to be sent to the Rungis International Market
Paris’s largest wholesale market for food and agricultural products
According to an investor presentation from earlier this year
Icade hopes to start work on the data center in 2028
with a view to it coming online by 2029/30
Icade specializes in commercial and residential developments
but is taking a growing interest in data centers
The company currently has five operational data centers at another of its sites in Paris
These have a combined capacity of 18MW and are leased to Digital Reality
A sixth data center is currently in the works
which will be leased to Equinix and provide an additional 10MW
Icade said it intends to move beyond providing powered shells to customers
and could pursue a joint venture with a data center operator
It may also look at becoming an operator itself by acquiring an existing data center business
Consultation on the Rungis plan runs until July 3
The projects join another data center development proposed for Val-de-Marne
Goodman Group is hoping to convert the site of the former Signify logistics center in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges into two data centers
Announced last year, each of the buildings would feature 12 data halls. This scheme was granted approval last year
France has doubled down on data center investment since hosting an international AI summit in February
which saw a host of multi-billion dollar investments in AI infrastructure announced
These included a commitment from Brookfield to spend €20 billion ($20.7bn) on AI data centers in France over the next five years, as well as an agreement between France and the United Arab Emirates to work together on a project that could be worth up to €50 billion ($51.6bn) and include the construction of a 1GW data center
Another company, G42, said it would work with DataOne to establish an AI data center - powered by AMD hardware - in France

Bonneuil sur Marne is the second biggest inland waterway port in France
located on a strategic axis to the south-east of Paris
Its owner Haropa - Ports de Paris has acquired the former airfields close to the southern harbour basin
Eiffage Énergie Systèmes' teams are in charge of replacing lighting on the access roads to this new part of the site
these former airfields will be used for the transit and sorting of rubble from the Grand Paris engineering works
and especially work on the future metro line 15
supervised by the SGP (Société du Grand Paris)
road access has been built from Fief Cordelier roundabout and our teams are in charge of upgrading the whole lighting system and switching it over to LED technology
Our employees thus dismantled the former facilities comprising light columns topped with 250-watt lanterns and replaced them with tapering Europole columns equipped with LED lighting heads from Schréder-Comatelec's Piano range
For the Fief Cordelier roundabout lighting our teams installed elegant light fixtures comprising columns with LED lamps of the iRoad type from Italian urban lighting specialist iGuzzini
a relaxation area has been designed especially for them
so you can keep an eye on the kids while you relax
The site is particularly popular for children's birthdays
with packages including access to the park
entertainment or services (depending on the package) and sweets
Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 7pm during school terms
you can take metro line 8 (get off at Créteil Préfecture then walk 25 min) or RER A (get off at Sucy-Bonneuil then take bus 308 to Regard) or even RER D (get off at Maisons Alfort then take bus 181 to Paul Casalis)

How to increase the use of waterways aiding hinterland connections
Urban pressure to create new housing units
This increased urban presence also implies greater demand for goods and more intense use of roadways
Considering the typical congestion problems that affect cities' land transport networks
the option of using the waterways for goods distribution is becoming more and more attractive
all stakeholders must agree on these new logistics strategies
the food products destined for Franprix stores located in the heart of Paris are being distributed via the Seine
The goods are first transported in containers between the port of Bonneuil-sur-Marne and the port of Bourdonnais in the centre of Paris
before being delivered by truck on the last leg of their itinerary to the retail stores
all of which are located within a radius of 4 km
Since 2015 a second warehouse located at Bonneuil is used allowing to increase to 42 per day the number of containers transported by the River Seine
and to 300 the number of stores being supplied
the objective is to transport 48 containers per day
which is equivalent to a savings of 450,000 km / year and a 37% reduction in CO² emissions
This initiative is also enabling development of the quays located within the urban area and will make port activities more acceptable to the Paris population
River transportation is an excellent alternative for urban and last-mile logistics. In the case of Paris there several pioneering projects to use the Seine river as logistic channel. The project Fludis proposes a system combining 38 m long electric barges as floating warehouses with electric bicycles
capable of distributing 3000 packages per day
potentially saving up to 110 tons of CO2 per year
These examples show the potential of rivers for sustainable mobility

Bermuda’s Tyrone Smith has picked up his first international win of the year
claiming victory at the 2013 Meeting National de Bonneuil sur Marne held in Paris
The two-time Olympian and Bermuda National Record holder leaped 8.09m [26.5ft] – marking his best jump since 2011
The 28-year-old athlete competes regularly on the international circuit where he consistently is a top finisher
Last month he placed 3rd in the Seiko Golden Grand Prix in Japan
and his next competition will be on Monday in the Czech Republic where he will compete in the 2013 Memorial Josefa Odlozila
The U.S-based athlete made it through to the finals in the 2012 Olympics, becoming the first Bermudian track and field athlete to reach an Olympic final since the 1990s when Brian Wellman was competing. Smith has said he hopes to build off of that Olympic experience and make it to another final

German drug and chemicals giant Bayer AG has made an unsolicited takeover offer for Monsanto Co as high inventories and low commodity prices spur consolidation in the global agrichemicals industry
Monsanto disclosed the approach before Bayer confirmed its move
With Monsanto worth $42 billion by market capitalisation
an acquisition would likely be bigger than ChemChina’s February deal to buy Swiss agrichemicals firm Syngenta AG for $43 billion and could face US antitrust hurdles
Monsanto said in a statement its board is reviewing the proposal
There is no assurance that any transaction will take place
said in a brief statement that its executives recently met executives of Monsanto to privately discuss a negotiated acquisition
A further statement will be made as appropriate
The proposal comes as Chinese state-backed ChemChina’s deal for Syngenta faces intensive regulatory review in the United States over concerns about the security of US food supply
The deal is the largest foreign acquisition ever by a Chinese company
as Beijing seeks to secure the country’s own food supply
could raise US antitrust concerns because of the overlap in the seeds business
spurning a deal with Bayer over concerns a tie-up might not receive antitrust clearance could also pose challenges for Monsanto: its own bid for Syngenta last year would have meant significant expansion in seeds
the inventor of aspirin and maker of Yasmin birth control pills
is a much more diversified company than Syngenta or Monsanto
Bayer’s crop science division has businesses in seeds
crop protection and non-agricultural pest control
potentially complementing Monsanto’s seeds assets
Both Bayer and its German rival BASF SE have been looking to build scale in agrichemicals in order to remain competitive
But the role of Monsanto in any deal has been a sticking point
Monsanto approached Bayer earlier this year to express interest in the latter’s crop science unit
in the form of an acquisition or joint venture
In a sign of how quickly Bayer turned the tables on Monsanto
the latter’s president and chief operating officer
dismissed speculation of the company being a takeover target for Bayer or BASF at an investor conference in New York earlier
“It’s all wild speculation because there’s nothing there,” he said
Both Bayer and BASF had been exploring tie-ups with Monsanto for several months
but valuation concerns have made a deal elusive
