Text description provided by the architects. In January 2021, Déchelette Architecture won a competition launched by Seine Ouest Habitat et Patrimoine to design a building at 17 Rue des Quatre-Cheminées in Boulogne-Billancourt.
The program is clear: to conceive a four-story building with eight social housing units and a shop using a wooden structure that promotes the use of environmentally friendly materials
© François BaudryTo meet these ambitions, the architects have designed a building with a raw earth façade and a stone base on the street side, and a wooden façade on the garden side. The use of self-supporting raw earth across four levels of the façade is a first for collective housing in France.

National Rally is making gains with higher-earning professionals and older voters previously put off by party founder Jean-Marie Le Pen
Céline, a civil servant and administrator in several French government ministries, used to keep quiet about the fact that she voted for the far-right, anti-immigration party of Marine Le Pen
“I couldn’t talk about it at work; people would say: ‘You’re a fascist.’ It was frowned upon – it was almost a sackable offence,” said the 68-year-old
there’s more of a sense of people getting onboard with Le Pen’s ideas – it’s as if there has been a lightbulb moment,” Céline

The problem is immigration; people feel invaded.”
Part of Boulogne-Billancourt, with its largely well-educated, urban professional electorate, lies within the parliamentary constituency of the young prime minister, Gabriel Attal
who was appointed less than six months ago to invigorate Macron’s difficult second term
was to “fight against populism” and counter Le Pen’s increasingly popular European election candidate
But when Attal returned to Boulogne-Billancourt last week to address a rally in a local theatre
really want to be the country that sends the biggest battalion of far-right apparatchiks to the European parliament?” Attal asked
A second is that Bardella’s lead against Macron’s group is expected to be big – potentially more than 10% – whereas last time it was less than 1%
This would show not just that the far right has grown
but that Macron’s support has considerably fallen
warned at the Boulogne-Billancourt rally that Le Pen’s far right was now certain to make it to the second round of the 2027 presidential election
raising the question of who could stop her
who promised at his election in 2017 there would be “no more reason to vote for extremes” but has seen Le Pen’s vote rise
by politicking over the place of the far right
“Marine Le Pen has succeeded in her party’s aim of making this European election a referendum for or against Macron,” said Luc Rouban, of the Cevipof political research centre at Sciences Po university.

But Le Pen supporters are voting on Sunday largely out of concern for national issues: the daily challenge of making ends meet

in what pollsters have called an increasingly porous French electorate
“It’s the biggest anti-Macron message I can send,” she said
had recently been sacked from his job in TV
Polling shows that two voter groups who formerly stayed away from Le Pen’s party have begun to slowly shift
there is a slight increase in support for Bardella by more highly educated
whereas Le Pen’s voter base used to be defined by people who spent a shorter time in education
People aged between 60 and 70 – who were once put off by the party founder
seeing his movement as a danger to democracy that promoted racist
as well as being bad for the economy – are now beginning to turn to Bardella
Leafleting in a suit and tie at a Boulogne-Billancourt market, Christophe Versini, a legal expert, parliamentary adviser and local delegate for the National Rally, said: “When you see that we’re progressing even in départements like the Hauts-de-Seine, which includes Boulogne-Billancourt, that means that no territory in France is beyond us.” Canvassing with him

The abstention rate in France is expected to be about 50%
The sociologist Félicien Faury recently published Ordinary Voters

An unusual place that's well worth a visit
an island on the Seine near Boulogne Billancourt
has been closely linked to that of Renault for over a century
and started gradually building his first factory
the cruise liner-like plant emerged from the island
The structure would not be completed for another few years
but it would eventually go on to cover almost all of the 11.5 hectare island
The ultra-modern facility was even energy independent
and a deck for loading vehicles on to boats to be transported by river
The impressive site will be forever linked to Renault and their shared story has not yet finished…
the company owned plants along the Seine in an area of Boulogne-Billancourt known as the Trapeze
as well as on the river’s southern bank in Meudon
Four years after first purchasing a plot of land
the company began the major construction work for its plant on Île Seguin
But vehicle production at the car manufacturer’s first island-based plant would not start until 1930
The aim was to manufacture a broader range of now legendary 4-cylinder vehicles
as well 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder vehicles
like the Vivasport and the Nervasport respectively
Renault was already investing in innovation at the plant; the firm even created a test track in the building’s basement
the Renault site at Île Seguin was the largest plant in France
the construction was far from finished – it was only completed in 1937.
Production of the 4CV kicked off in the midst of the post-war period in 1947
The Renault plant at Île Seguin became a symbol of the brand’s links to the working classes
it was the Renault 4’s turn to come out of these now iconic production lines
Renault had produced one million 4L vehicles at the plant
But it was time to maximise the space in the building in order to make room for new projects; in 1967
the floor space was optimised so almost 100% could be used
A fifth floor was added to the plant in order to boost production capacity and modernise the paint workshop
the brand renewed its range of light utility vehicles with the Renault Express
the utility vehicle proved a huge success right into the beginning of the 2000s
production at Île Seguin came to a complete halt
The production line needed to be more competitive and although improvements were made
the building couldn’t meet the industrial requirements of the 1990s
The plant closed its doors for good on 31 March 1992
with the Supercinq Société the last vehicle to come off the Île Seguin production line

Le Corbusier moved to Paris in 1917 looking for commissions and recognition
tasked him with designing two adjoining residences and studios in 1924
These were to be shared between Lipchitz and his friend
The ensemble was built on a private street in Boulogne-Billancourt where Marc Chagall once lived
the young Corbusier found a fresh canvas on which to make choices and test ideas
Inspired by the industrial aesthetic and modern materials such as reinforced concrete
and vast windows overlooking nature and letting in natural light
Comfort and simplicity were the cornerstones of his vision
These elements are found in the two residence-studios on the Allée des Pins
the “front turret” of the Miestchaninoff residence
offers a focal point for the entire construction
The location was ideal for creating the form of an ocean liner (known as Streamline Modern style)
a fashionable choice in the heyday of transatlantic voyages
Visitors will see a funnel framed by a spiral staircase and a handrail modeled on those used on ships
The rest of the building features interplaying
connected parallelepiped shapes in a nod to Le Corbusier’s cubist influences
the Lipchitz residence-studio is characterized by an overall simplicity – the result of personal choice and budget
Rue Denfert-Rochereau is home to a “dictionary of modern architecture” in the form of three adjoining villas designed by three avant-garde architects
the overall result is one of unparalleled consistency
and efficient function making up the collective founding principles
The first was built by Robert Mallet-Stevens in 1926
and horizontal windows were part of this so-called modern dandy’s love of pure dimensions
the owner even demanded that Le Corbusier and Raymond Fischer lower their rooftop terraces by seven feet to avoid obstructing the view
Next came Le Corbusier’s house for William Cook
an American journalist and friend of Gertrude Stein
The residence was the first to showcase the architect’s “five-point theory for modern architecture.” This principle implied building on piles
a façade separated from the structure itself
and a rooftop terrace offering a garden and a relaxation area
and light are more important than the materials used
who created a villa for fashion designer Suzanne Dubin
and horizontal windows for enjoying sunlight all day long
Villa Ternisien is also an icon of modern architecture from the early 20th century
and was started by Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret in 1927
Today the only original feature is a section of the first floor
The three subsequent upper floors were built by Georges-Henri Pingusson in 1936
approached Le Corbusier at one of his conferences at the Sorbonne
They wanted to build a residence on a triangular plot including music and painting studios
with the ensemble surrounding an “untouchable” tree
adapting the house’s floorplan to the limits of the triangular plot while preserving the tree through a triple division of the spaces
But financial difficulties and the introduction of new procedures disliked by the owners led the project to failure
Following a lawsuit for architectural defects
the building was demolished and Pingusson built a four-story investment property in 1936
he kept the prow-shaped point on the first floor
and used porthole windows in keeping with the Streamline Modern style
Pierre Patout is an exception among the modernists
Despite upholding the International architecture style
he retained a penchant for the picturesque
And this is proved by his immense concrete “ship” in the Streamline Modern style
whom he met during the development of the Ile-de-France transatlantic liner
a search for originality is seen in the numerous recesses
Lombard himself even added a personal touch: The floor of the vestibule
features a black-and-white glass paste mosaic
The painter and “captain” then left his “ship” for Toulon in 1946
The residence-studio went on to assume more prosaic roles
being used as a yoga space before being abandoned then transformed into an apartment building
the mansion seems to be the antithesis of avant-garde architecture
It is in fact an example of a regional style of Art Deco architecture created by Jean-Léon Courrège
the father of the renowned fashion designer
This mansion was later home to André Malraux
whose love of this pink-brick building’s aesthetic led him live there from the Liberation until 1962
the author of The Human Condition wrote The Voices of Silence and The Metamorphosis of the Gods
The residence was also the site of a drama on February 7
when a bomb set by the OAS exploded while Malraux was out
stands out from other precursors as he worked in both construction and architecture
forging his reputation by taking over his father’s reinforced concrete company
he and his brother Gustave built an immensely simple reinforced concrete villa for sculptor Dora Gordine
a disciple of Aristide Maillol who emigrated from Estonia
such avant-garde material did not exclude the use of traditional shapes
The architect chose to create vertical windows that he said offered a complete panorama
unlike the more restrictive horizontal models
And the villa’s sophisticated façade even saw it listed as a National Historic Monument
Along with Robert Mallet-Stevens and Le Corbusier
Jean Lurçat is one of the standard-bearers of the International style
His Froriep de Salis residence offers a simple
The result features a cube for the studio and a parallelepiped layout for the living areas
horizontal bay window is topped with a cement pergola
and the ensemble champions the functionalism and rationalism of modern architecture

the former team of San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama
is officially set to pull out of any and all championship leagues just one season following the 7-foot-4 rookie's departure
The decision came after months of rumors surrounding the club and its future
and was ultimately made as a result of a lack of funding
which would prevent the club from participating in a full season's worth of basketball
Boulogne-Billancourt — a neighboring commune of Metropolitans 92's headquarters in Levallois-Perret — mayor Pierre-Christophe Bague addressed the matter
stating that the decision was "unfortunate," yet unavoidable
“These painful decisions are unfortunately imposed on us," Baguet said in the press release
"We have done everything in recent years to maintain our financial support for our professional basketball team ..
(but) we must make choices for the future."
Wembanyama likely was a big selling point for the French-based club last season
drawing attention from not only local fans
but international fans and scouts looking to preview the incoming rookie's talents

though he can't totally be to blame for the club's downfall
(Metropolitans 92) decided not to request registration in the French Pro B championship from the LNB for next season," the press release continued
he's learned to adapt to American culture and embrace a different kind of basketball
though his pride in his French roots remain strong
he's likely the most disheartened by the news
Only time will tell what happens of Metropolitans 92 down the road
it won't be participating in LNB Pro A tournaments or fielding a team

© Julien LanooOur building is located in the centre of the site, which was the main constraint, just as a fountain in the middle of a cloister. How could the building’s position transcend this constraint ? The pillar of our design proceeds from this principle, this central position, providing both generous indoor spaces, and outdoor spaces by gently protecting the views brought us to this design: the Boulogne Arches.

the building evolves evenly across each facade
The arch compositions are a contemporary interpretation of the classical vocabulary of the former Renault factories
yet this second skin is not just a formal one; the arches
extend around the building fulfilling different functions
Each property enjoys a private outdoor space of long balconies which are protected by this double skin
The width of these balconies varies according to their orientation; they are narrower to the north thus maximizing illumination
East and West the arches provide shade against natural overheating in summer
Despite the central location of the building the second skin also provides privacy
by preventing visibility of the interior from the outside
thus benefiting from natural light and solar energy throughout the day

Ethiopia’s Rahma Tusa and Eritrea’s Hiskel Tewelde took the top honours at the Boulogne-Billancourt Christian Grangier Half-Marathon, an IAAF Bronze Label road race, on Sunday (19).
Tusa notched her first success over 13.1 miles in what was her second attempt at the distance. She improved her personal best to 1:08:29, taking almost four minutes from her previous best of 1:12:21 set in 2015. Her win, however, wasn’t a surprise after retaining her Rome Marathon title earlier this year and clocking a 10,000m PB of 31:05:14.
She broke off from the rest of the field at the outset and dictated a swift tempo, hitting the five-kilometre mark in 15:28, twelve seconds ahead of Kenya’s Parendis Lakapana.
Tusa maintained a steady pace as Lakapana managed to catch her Ethiopian opponent over the next few kilometres. The duo reached the 10-kilometre checkpoint in 31:56 before Tusa again ramped up the pace. She built a small gap over her challenger, going through the 15-kilometre mark in 48:21, 10 seconds ahead of Lakapana, who was the fastest woman of the field based on PBs.
Tusa then extended her lead to 29 seconds at the 20-kilometre mark and broke the tape in 1:08:29, taking 57 seconds off the previous course record set by Firehiwot Dado back in 2009.
“I’m very happy with this win and this personal best” said the 24-year-old.
Lakapana came home second in 1:09:13 to take 33 seconds off her PB, while Kenya’s Josephine Chepkoech rounded out the podium in 1:09:47.
The men’s race was more competitive than the women’s, and the sunny and cool conditions at the beginning of the race suggested that the course record of 1:00:11 set by Franklin Chepwony in 2013 could had been in jeopardy.
A close battle was expected between Kenyan duo Albert Kangogo and Geoffrey Yegon, the two fastest men in the field and the only ones with a sub-60-minute PB. They had five other men for company in the early lead pack as the seven runners, spearheaded by Kenya’s 1:03:14 man Elias Kiptoo, passed the five-kilometre mark in 14:33, a pace well outside what was necessary to break the course record.
The group slowed slightly over the next five-kilometre section, hitting the 10-kilometre checkpoint in 29:16. There were still seven runners in contention for the victory including Kangogo, Yegon, Kiptoo, South Africa’s Precious Mashele, Eritrea’s Hiskel Tewelde and Aferwerki Birhane as well as Birhan Nebebew of Ethiopia.
Soon after the half-way point, both Tewelde and Berhane started to kick on at the front. They forged ahead with Nebebew and created a small gap over the rest of the group. Some 13 kilometres into the race, Kangogo and Yegon rejoined the leaders and the pace slowed again.
At 15 kilometres, reached in 43:48, Kangogo made a move but it wasn’t enough to shake off his opponents and the race eventually came down to a sprint between the five men.
Tewelde, who represented Eritrea over 5000m at last year’s Olympics and 10,000m at this year’s World Championships, showed his strength to pull off his first international half marathon victory in 1:01:13.
“Winning here gives me great satisfaction,” said the 31-year-old, who has a PB of 1:00:29. “It would have been great if some pacemakers could have been here to maintain a steady pace to run faster.”
Nebebew was a close second, just one second behind Tewelde as Berhane took third place in 1:01:17, taking off 55 seconds from his previous personal best.
Kangogo, who ran a PB of 59:25 in Copenhagen, placed fourth six seconds adrift the winner with Yegon fifth in 1:01:37 and Mashele sixth in 1:01:48.

Munene and Ayele beat the winds in Boulogne-...
Text description provided by the architects. Boursorama Banque has moved into its new Parisian head office in Boulogne-Billancourt designed by Studioninedots. In collaboration with Ateliers 115, Studioninedots created a robust and clear building distinguished by its subtle recesses and terraces but foremost by the striking facade that interplays rhythms of bronze-coloured blades.
The bank building is situated on a section of the old Renault factory site in Paris. The plot Lot YA sits within a dense urban fabric and points with its southern tip towards the adjacent Parc Billancourt and the river Seine. This resulted in a paradox: optimal views of the park were desired but, simultaneously, incoming direct sunlight should be blocked.
© Peter CuypersThe building is designed to stand its place among the high rises on Avenue Pierre Lefaucheux. Utilising horizontal layers, for example in the form of recesses and terraces, connects it better to the smaller scale residential buildings in the neighbourhood.

When it comes to advertising and cars, Renault dares to innovate. The brand’s recent multi-award-winning campaigns demonstrate its excellent creative health, stimulated by Renaulution and its new ‘Nouvel’R’ identity. They are helping to develop a new sense of pride in the teams involved on a daily basis. Here’s a look back at the recent awards won by Renault Advertising.
The European Heritage Days, which celebrated their 40th birthday this year, took place on September 16th and 17th, 2023. To mark the occasion, the Foundation invited a famous street-artist to give an artistic performance on Bâtiment X.
In the 90s, the now-famous street-artist Jérôme Mesnager came to Île Seguin to paint his iconic "Men in white" (who also turned 40 this year) on the walls of the disused Renault Billancourt factory.
A time he has fond memories of. "I used to go painting during the day, accompanied by musicians. The atmosphere was excellent/great. We had this gigantic space at our disposal, with its test track and paint room".
This artistic performance is the symbol of a new chapter opening up between Renault Group and art. A “street art” rooted in popular culture, like the vehicles we design. "Naturally present on the street, Renault shares with street art not only a common space, but also creativity, popularity, technical mastery and a taste for challenges." Catherine Gros, Foundation Director, responsible for Renault Group's major projects around art, heritage and sponsorship.
The next appointment between the Group and street art has already been made, as the Foundation will support the street art exhibition dedicated to Zloty, from September 23rd to October 28th, 2023 in the 13th arrondissement of Paris.
Renault's art collection, which begun in the 1930s, notably with the full time employment of photographer Robert Doisneau (1912-1994), reflects both its era and the company's history. It includes many works by Hungarian-born painter Victor Vasarely (1906-1997) - who redesigned the Renault logo in 1972 - as well as by Nouveaux Réalistes sculptors such as Arman (1928-2005) and Jean Tinguely (1925-1991), who worked directly in the workshops, with the company's teams and materials.
Because a short video is worth a thousand words, (re)discover the unique relationship forged over the years between the Group and the art world viewing these images:

Kenya’s Morris Munene and Ethiopia’s Gebeyanesh Ayele claimed their respective titles at the Semi-Marathon Boulogne-Billancourt Christian Granger
whose 20th edition took place on Sunday (20)
Munene thwarted the forecasts to pull of his third victory over the distance this year
following wins at the Santa Pola and Madrid half marathons
He thus succeeded 2014 winner Yitayal Atnafu
who was the defending champion as last year’s edition was cancelled following the horrendous series of terrorist attacks which struck Paris
who prevailed twice in the Marseille Cassis 20km and had the fastest PB of the field with 59:30
was eventually unable to make the trip to France
with five runners with lifetime bests between 60 and 61-minutes toeing the line
That implied that the 1:00:11 course record set by Kenya's Franklin Chepkowny in 2013 might be in jeopardy
but fierce winds dashed any course record assaults
A group of eight runners quickly detached itself from the field
Ethiopians Yitayal Atnafu and Gedefa Tolossa
Led by the 2016 Marvejols-Mende champion Lotiang
the lead pack hit the five-kilometre checkpoint in 14:35
the 2010 European cross-country silver medallist who was targeting his 1:01:42 personal best
was the first to fade and eventually drop out
At the instigation of Lotiang who continued to force a steady pace
the pack went through 10 kilometres in 29:02
But Ohman and Tolossa couldn’t maintain the rhythm and were the next to drop back
there were still five runners left in contention: Munene
with the pack passing 15 kilometres in 44:10
Uganda’s Siwa kicked on but couldn’t manage to pull away
The final kilometre came down to a sprint with Munene prevailing in 1:02:04
My strategy was to be hidden in the group and then sprint hard at the end,” said the 21-year-old
who improved his lifetime best to 1:00:35 in Krems
as Lotiang rounded out the podium in 1:02:13
In a close finish Bira wound up fourth five seconds in arrears
As expected the women’s contest was a duel between Kenya's Damaris Areba and Ethiopia's Gebeyanesh Ayele
they separated themselves from the rest of the field
with Ayele forging on alone soon thereafter
She gradually pulled away to win her first half marathon contest in 1:10:21
Her previous best of 1:11:37 was set two years ago in Boulogne-Billancourt
Areba finished a distant runner-up in 1:11:59

Through the construction of 137 new housing units
this competition deals with the redevelopment of an urban block in Boulogne-Billancourt
On the site there were already several housing blocks organized in two six-story longitudinal pieces
The program demanded the total demolition of the existing houses and preserving the adjacent park
but the proposed complex generates an efficient urban microsystem that can be densified
so instead of being demolished – which would affect its capacity and economy – it is maintained and presented as the referent of the new proposal
The trees on the site are maintained and the 81 existing housing units are transformed and extended with winter gardens
A new planted area covers the current parking with a double function: on the one hand it makes it unnecessary to build a new parking and on the other it contains shops and small facilities at street level
The project also includes the construction of 56 new
lifted over the ground to preserve the vegetation
Demolishing and rebuilding would have been 30% costlier

The 20th edition of the Semi-Marathon Boulogne-Billancourt Christian Granger will see Ethiopia’s Yitayal Atnafu defend his title at the IAAF Bronze Label Road Race on Sunday (20)
Last year’s edition was cancelled following the horrendous series of terrorist attacks which struck Paris on 13 November 2015
Atnafu will be defending the title he won in 2014 when he ran a PB of 1:01:03
Since then the 23-year-old has moved up to the marathon
making his debut over the distance in 2:12:09 last January before finishing seventh in Paris in April in a best of 2:08:53
But retaining his title won’t be an easy task in the presence of so many high quality runners
who has the fastest PB of the field with a time of 59:30 set 14 months ago
The 26-year-old Kenyan seems to be the favourite as he is the only one with a sub-60-minute PB
It also suggests that the 1:00:11 course record set by Kenya’s Franklin Chepkowny in 2013 could be in jeopardy
unless the conditions turn out to be difficult as the forecast calls for rain and a strong wind
who won the Marseille-Cassis 20km in 2012 and 2015
clocking three sub-61-minute half marathons
including his success in Den Haag in a season’s best of 1:00:27 – a performance which was a world-leading mark at the time
Kipyego’s main rival includes Fentahun Hunegnaw
who almost broke the one-hour barrier when finishing sixth at the 2015 Berlin Half Marathon in a personal best of 1:00:10
Morris Munene could also come up trumps on Sunday
The 21-year-old Kenyan was victorious at the Santa Pola and Madrid half marathons earlier this year and recently set a PB of 1:00:35 in Krems
