Quentin de Briey has compiled a selection of photographs from his ongoing visual diary
The book is a ‘visual skate’ through the city; a record of both the pace of New York
and the pace and perspective of someone navigating its streets on a skateboard – taking in unknown side streets and city characters
Published by the artist, with Yvon Lambert
the book was printed in a limited edition of 500
The photographs have a frenetic energy to them
as you might expect from someone whose work involves travelling the world
and whose life is constantly connected to the potentials of framing and composition
Quentin zooms in and out through Thank You for Your Business
balancing the classic New York cityscapes with more intimate portraits of the people in his life and those passing through – imbuing a subject that’s well-trodden ground with a distinctive sense of character

If You Could Jobs
As part of a regular series powered by Dell Small Business
BetaKit asks business leaders to share their advice for growing small businesses
Apiary management may not be the most common tech vertical, but in the case of Montreal startup Nectar
new beekeeping technology was an industry need
The company focuses on developing hardware that collects and analyzes data on the health of beehives
and given the alarming mortality rate of honeybees
this could be a lifesaver when it comes to preserving the world’s agricultural chain
BetaKit spoke to Nectar’s co-founder Xavier de Briey about what it meant to identify such a unique problem
and how it’s important for entrepreneurs to accept that they’re always learning
the hardest step was understanding the need of our customers in the commercial market
but we quickly noticed that it was not tangible – it was hard to define what the hobbyists wanted
we decided to switch to the commercial market
helping beekeepers for application in the pollination markets and to help optimize their daily operations
The most complex thing – and it’s still a bit complex – was understanding how our solution can be of value to them and their operations
We’ve been very involved and very close to beekeepers in the field
asking them questions and trying to find and test solutions
But the hardest part was understanding the need
because we knew they had a problem and there were many difficulties in shaping the solution
That part was a very important phase in the company
where the solution or the platform or the hardware’s going to change with time
and we decided to make our first proof of concept based on the way we were understanding the beekeepers’ situation
then we contacted some beekeepers and asked them if they were willing to do this partner project with us
and the marketing team was on the field in the background
taking written notes on all the random comments they were saying
We met many beekeepers of many different-sized operations – ones that had between one to 20 hives
and ones that had up to one thousand hives
We had the product hypothesis that we built and tested on the field
we were rechristening the product definition until we had something
We built our culture in a very horizontal way
asking our employees all the time about what they wanted
and we are still doing that right now by always asking questions
We did a first brainstorm together two or three years ago in the living room of one of our colleagues
and we brainstormed on the values of the company; it’s about humility and being humble
My business partner and I are always listening to our employees and trying to find the right way to satisfy everybody
but we’ve created our culture in a very human way
by being aware of the needs of all our employees and trying to find the best comfort zone for them
I think it’s quite simple: if I had to advise another entrepreneur
and to always listen to people if you don’t know how something works
Be surrounded by mentors of different skills
and try to find solutions with people better than you
We’ve been involved in many incubator programs
especially in FounderFuel here in Montreal
they introduced us to mentors in different fields
from product management to fiscal management
I can just take my phone and call one of them; they help us out a lot
Sometimes just a two-hour meeting can directly change the company strategy
Just accept that you’re learning every day
and that your strategy will change many times during the company’s life
The short-term future is validating our solution with the commercial beekeepers that we’re targeting right now in North America
we want to show that the hardware system technology works well
and that the value proposition is getting the most return from the beta testing
We want to improve the solution intuitively for the rest of the year
We’ve got many potential customers there interested in our solution

In charge of photography was Quentin de Briey
The collection brings dazzling textures and dramatic shapes: Sequins
This new book takes the shape of a visual diary
letting us get lost in the magnetism of a globetrotting fashion photographer
“A lot of those pictures have crazy stories about them
it would have been interesting to put them into the book but I’m not into words
I do pictures” proclaimed Quentin de Briey on his new book
He certainly does do pictures and he does them well as a matter of fact
with his photographs depicting the recklessness and freedom of a life well-lived
the photographer now finds himself somewhere between the enigmatic Barcelona and the elegant edge of Paris – this threesome of cultures hitting it off to give birth to a love child of candid but cultivated photography
de Briey collaborated with skateboard magazines as his own career as a pro skateboarder was halted by injury
He built up his pandora’s box of equipment and ventured into fashion as the lure of travel and a decent living became quite the tempting prospect
It comes as no surprise that he relates to the likes of Bruce Weber
There’s a black and white portrait of a grinning Tyler the Creator that’s typically Weber
muse and girlfriend Steffy Argelich is reminiscent of the way Teller captured a young Kate Moss – plus there’s enough fun and full-blown frivolity to see where Richardson fits into the equation
there’s a haunted vibrancy which makes these images distinctly his own
Hundreds of photographs are collaged together in this mighty tome with the kind of effortless look that makes it all the more perfect
The turn of each page reminds you why the life of a photographer is one that’s put on a pedestal and why the often-romanticised connotations of image-makers are actually well-deserved
De Briey’s Tumblr blog bears the same name as his third book and although it’s too an all-encapsulating visual hinterland
the photographer confirms that he does prefer the depth and tangibility of a good old print; “digital platforms are more like fast foods to me,” he quips
If the digital equivalent is a McDonald’s 99p mayo chicken
then you can be sure that the book is a gastronomic masterpiece of tender seared duck foie gras
Robbins and Jeannine Ganaye spans 75 years and two continents. Now
it appears there is another chapter to be written for these two wartime darlings
a French journalist and a Las Vegas businessman are working to make sure the sweethearts stay in contact — and even see each other again
when 24-year-old Robbins met 18-year-old Ganaye while he was serving in Briey
They spent almost three months together and fell in love
but duty called and Robbins was sent to the front lines and then returned home to Memphis
Robbins got married and opened a hardware store with his wife
They were married for 70 years when Lillian died in 2015
Having waited five years for Robbins to return to France
Ganaye eventually married and had five children with her husband
Their second chapter started when Linda Tosh
found a Facebook post about a Forever Young Senior Veterans trip to France in honor of the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion of Normandy
She helped Robbins fill out an application
A part of the application asked if there was anyone from the war the veterans wished to find. Robbins told Tosh to put Ganaye's family on there.
founder and president of Forever Young Senior Veterans
They thought it was a shot in the dark looking for someone from 75 years ago
hoping they could find Ganaye — and they did thanks to Agnes Vahramian
Vahramian said one night she spent about two hours searching through Google and the White Pages for a person she knew nothing about
"One of my challenges was to guess the French name out of an American pronunciation," Vahramian said
"There were a bunch of Ganaye families in Meurthe et Moselle
I picked the old-fashioned first names and began calling them the next morning."
She said she stumbled upon Ganaye's brother
who said his sister remembered the American soldier.
Vahramian said it took a bit of persuading to get Ganaye to see Robbins again
but she 'needed time to know if she wanted to meet with him again,' " Vahramian said. "It took me a few days to convince
because she was afraid of the others' opinions and to be misjudged."
Vahramian and Ganaye's nurse convinced her to see Robbins
the two lovebirds finally embraced again.
"Imagine seeing somebody 75 years after you met her
and when you see her the love is right there again," Robbins said
The reunited sweethearts spent about two hours together at the nursing home where Ganaye lives
and talked about how their love for each other never went away.
Robbins had to return to the United States
but they said it would not be the last time they saw each other.
Now a team is dedicated to keeping Robbins and Ganaye connected
Vahramian and Hight are working to set up emails or video calls between the two
Hight is in the process of getting a computer for Robbins
and Vahramian has offered to translate emails between the two — Robbins speaks only English
(Robbins said their language barrier was not an issue back in the '40s: "I spoke enough French to get by
but with a lot of hand motions and make outs we could make it by all right.")
Their love story has caught the attention of people around the world
including a Las Vegas businessman who wants to fund Ganaye's trip to visit Robbins in Mississippi
owner of Ballistic & Explosive Detection Dogs
found the story so moving that he requested to pay for Ganaye's trip.
Cordova said the story reminded him of his late father
"The story struck some personal chords," Cordova said
Some people give to the Red Cross and give blood
but this is just something that I do."
Robbins said he invited Ganaye and her family to stay with him in Mississippi and promised to show them "a good time."
"I told her family to bring her over here," Robbins said
and we'll get to enjoy each other for a while
we'll take them to Elvis — got to take them to Graceland."

The Belgian-born photographer, Quentin de Briey grew up in a small village in the countryside
before landing in Barcelona and Paris where he commutes between now
Having started his career as a professional skateboarder
he also spent his time around the Barcelona scene taking photos and collaborating with the likes of Carhartt and Nike SB for various projects
After hurting himself pretty badly five years ago
he eventually had to stop skateboarding and took up work at a studio as a photographer's assistant
Since then his main body of work has been fashion editorials alongside his personal projects such as his intimate new book entitled '10 x 15'
Dazed Digital: What was the first photograph you have a memory of taking?Quentin de Briey: I remember asking for my aunt's camera in Yellowstone (National Park) to take photos of the geysers
DD: Who or what would be your dream subject to shoot?Quentin de Briey: Whatever holiday with my friends I guess
But yes if I was asked to go shoot David Bowie in his house I would be really really happy
DD: Can you tell us about the content of your new book
Was it difficult to edit what went in?Quentin de Briey: It's a big compilation of diptychs made of random photos I took during 2010 and 2011 (most of them)
as I never knew when to stop and kept adding new photos all the time
DD: What effect do you hope the images in 10 x 15 will have on those who read it?Quentin de Briey: It's a very personal work so I'm not sure whether it's interesting for everybody actually
I just did it the way I wanted but I hope the viewer will find something they relate to.DD: What's next?Quentin de Briey: Keep working and travelling
Doing this book was fun so I'll try to do more for sure

lifestyle10 design firms that create contemporary homes in SingaporePUBLISHED ONAugust 17
A contemporary and a modern home is not one and the same
The modern concept borrows from a time that has already passed (i.e
styles from the 1950s and 1960s) while contemporary design is all about the present - think sleek and on-trend finishes
Because contemporary interiors follow what's in vogue
we've done the legwork for you and put together a list of interior firms that specialise in creating these fashionable spaces
First on our list of contemporary interior firms is Icon Interior Design
achieved through a combination of sleek finishes
textures and accessories - think darker wood tones
plush furniture plus streamlined cabinetry and built-ins
the designers usually keep the walls a plain white
These blank canvases play the perfect backdrop while keeping the rooms looking bright and breezy - just check out the abodes at Flame Tree Park
This boutique interior design studio ups the ante by playing around with symmetry to create visually arresting spaces
From geometric shapes to fancy mouldings and trimmings
Third Avenue Studio builds sophisticated homes that's well-crafted and fully functional
filled to the brim with wickedly fashionable storage solutions like the ones found in these spaces
Adding character to your home is no easy feat but Boewe Design makes it entirely possible
Each one of their projects has a distinct quality about them that sets them apart from other contemporary homes
From the warm and inviting Sol Acres residence to the cool and chic apartment at The Crest
the team at Boewe Design displays artistic adaptability and unique perspective
These professionals have proven that they have a keen eye for building polished contemporary apartments
even if they're working with small spaces
Aside from proving that they have a knack for building concealed rooms
they also fashioned plenty of hidden study nooks
and compact lounge areas (all clad in on-trend applications
19EightyThree has quite a number of notable projects under their belt including a before-and-after makeover of a two-storey family home that looks like a luxury yacht
Striking a balance between the zanier parts of a home with enduring applications
creating spaces that are both timeless and chic
this approach is so effective that it manages to elevate even a humble Woodlands Drive HDB and turn it into a home that exudes sophistication
If you rather be the one setting the trends rather than following them
Haireliving is the one firm you should check out simply because their ideas are both novel and distinct
Breathing life into contemporary interiors
with many of their features getting snazzy updates - think outdoor showers with glass roofs
mirror headboards plus standout feature walls fashioned from rough-hewn surfaces like the ones shown in The Woods
Four walls and a door are the basic configuration that every home comes in
but as a team of out-of-the-box thinkers (and despite the 'squarish'-sounding name)
The Orange Cube has built a huge portfolio that breaks out of the mould
the team has tried to mix things up by juxtaposing different shapes
styles and even trying their hands at incorporating large prints
their projects are all varied with each home bearing their own distinctive traits like the glossy look in the Parc Emily apartment or organic appearance of the Neptune Court condominium
The homes that erstudio build all have the hallmarks of timeless dwellings: classic neutrals
But that's where the similarities end as each of these abodes are specially tailored to suit the needs and preferences of their owners
From a minimalist 3-bedder that's a traveller's refuge from the road to a tiny and cosy apartment home with welcoming accents
these handsome homes certainly convey uniqueness as well as a decidedly contemporary appearance
Since its inception as a carpentry specialist
IN-EXPAT has progressed to become an all-round company with departments that handle everything from building work to interior design
It's no wonder then that they are the minds behind these artistic homes possessing a sleek
clean aesthetic as well as innovative functionality: an energetic Tampines abode that features structural elements as stylish showpieces (Tampines) as well as a studio apartment at Moonstone Lane with a 'sunken' living space
Driven by a philosophy of creating 'environments with lasting aesthetic appeal and functionality'
KDOT is committed to creating abodes that are both unique as well as useful to the people who dwell in them
Wonder how this approach looks like in practice
such as this deftly-designed Jelebu Road apartment with a dedicated play area or the Punggol BTO apartment that has a cutesy
but practical pastel-hued kitchen (pictured above)
