BayWa re has started working on a project featuring 1,440 semi-transparent PV modules at a fruit farm in Brumath
It says the plant will generate 464 MWh of electricity per year
From pv magazine France
BayWa re has started building a fleet of semi-transparent modules to be mounted on a fruit farm in Brumath
The Munich-based renewable energy producer said in a press release this week that the project will be the first to feature its semi-transparent panels in France
The company said it aims to install 1,440 semi-transparent PV modules across 4,900 square meters of strawberry farmland
The modules will be installed above the farm's produce and will replace the current protective plastic sheets
The new system allows 49% of light to pass through
BayWa re said the plant will produce the equivalent of 464 MWh per year
After it is commissioned in the first quarter of 2024
it will be connected to Strasbourg Électricité Réseaux
The electricity will be sold on the spot market or through power purchase agreements
The site owners have grown produce in the region since 1978
but they are now seeing the effects of climate change
Agrovoltaic shades provide favorable conditions for crops
They also noted that the sheets improve working conditions by creating a cooler environment compared to working under plastic tunnels
A plastic tunneling control plot will be used to collect accurate data on fruit production
Sensors under the panels will measure temperature

Chinese vendor Huawei is set to start constructing its first European factory next year
The site will be located in Brumath, near Strasbourg, France, according to the South China Morning Post
Huawei is reportedly set to invest an initial €200 million ($215m)
despite suffering several knockbacks in Europe in recent years
as some European governments have barred the use of the firm's 5G gear
The vendor first announced plans for the factory in 2020
but construction was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic
A source told SCMP that the site is expected to open in 2025
where mobile phone network equipment is set to be developed
The French government had initially told telcos planning to buy Huawei 5G equipment that they would not be able to renew licenses for the gear once they expire
after a meeting with French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire in Beijing in July of this year
an agreement had been reached that would see France extend Huawei 5G licenses in some cities
In 2020, the European Commission (EC) urged EU states to restrict "high-risk vendors" such as Huawei as they rolled out their national 5G networks
but the EU's internal market commissioner Thierry Breton told telecoms ministers in June that only a third of EU countries have implemented Huawei bans in critical areas
Earlier this year Portugal's cybersecurity council CSSC decided to effectively bar its operators from using Huawei's kit in its 5G networks
Germany has been more reluctant to impose sanctions on Huawei but is now weighing up the vendor's future in the country
Germany has previously approved equipment from Chinese telecoms vendors on a 'case-by-case' basis approach, and earlier this year it gave ZTE's latest 5G kit its seal of approval for use

The €200m Huawei plant in Brumath in Bas-Rhin will manufacture equipment for the European market
the Deputy General Manager of Huawei France in a radio interview
This includes smart watches and ear buds and is planning to start manufacturing 5G equipment in 2025
The plant was initially announced in 2020 to build mobile phone network equipment
However Zhang said the plant was expecting to make a billion items a year
It is also unlikely to be making smartphones at the plant
Huawei has faced restrictions on its equipment in networks in the UK

PARIS - Huawei has chosen the Business Park in the city of Brumath in France's Northeast Grand-Est region as the venue for its first manufacturing plant in Europe
the global telecom leader and the local authorities of the French region announced in a joint statement released on Thursday
with an investment of 200 million euros ($245 million)
will creat initially 300 jobs and 500 jobs in the long term
It aims to produce one billion euros worth of mobile network technology solutions for Huawei's European customers per year
"With this factory built at the crossroads of Europe
Huawei will enrich its already rich presence on the continent with 23 research and development centers
more than 3,100 suppliers and an efficient supply chain," it said
is a commune in the Bas-Rhin Department in the Grand-Est region near the border with Germany
Huawei announced in 2019 its intention to build its first European manufacturing plant in France
which is the company's largest overseas market
is seen by company founder Ren Zhengfei as the enterprise's second home
Huawei announced that this highly automated and intelligent plant will drive the technical competitiveness of European industry and boost the resilience of local supply chains and infrastructure
showcasing the wireless base station production
demonstrating Huawei's positive stance on Europe's call for digital sovereignty
A hot potato: Huawei has been ousted from some of the world's largest smartphone markets due to US sanctions
Significant investments in Europe have been planned for years
and Huawei has now confirmed that a major overseas expansion will begin next year
Huawei will start building its first overseas manufacturing plant in France in 2024, an anonymous source familiar with the matter recently said. Reuters reports that the new building will be used to make mobile phone and network equipment
and is expected to open for business in 2025
according to an additional source within the French government
Plans for the new factory were outlined in 2020
with an initial investment of €200 million ($215 million)
before the COVID-19 pandemic halted everything
and the new plant will be built in the city of Brumath
near Strasbourg and the official seat of the European Parliament
No further details or precise timeline are provided, but the Chinese Communist Party's official digital newspaper, China Daily, provides some additional details about the deal
stating that it will create 500 local jobs
The Brumath site will be used to produce a billion euros' worth of mobile network technology solutions
which will then be sold to European consumers
Beijing's official propaganda machine remarked how Huawei has been facing "increasing pressure" from the US and "some" of its allies in Europe
because of so-called national security concerns
The new French factory is seemingly showing the company's openness and commitment to serving the European market despite Washington sanctions
Huawei has been present in France since 2003
and the Brumath plant is part of a broader plan to increase investments in the European nation
the Paris government tried to oust the company by telling telecom operators to avoid buying Huawei 5G equipment
After Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire met with the company in Beijing
the French government ultimately decided to extend 5G licenses in some cities
Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei sees Europe as a "second home" for its company
The new manufacturing plant will be "highly automatic" and intelligent
and it will also have a demo center to showcase some of its production equipment
Further investments already planned by Huawei in France include a research center in Paris to support digital transformation in the country

In an exclusive interview on France Inter News Radio
the Deputy General Manager of Huawei France
revealed Huawei's first overseas factory will be completed in the northeastern Alsace region of France
"The factory construction is underway -- the ambition is indeed to produce 1 billion merchandise per year
And Huawei is manufacturing in France to supply the entire European market," said Zhang
He claimed that the factory in France will use sustainable materials and take environmental impact into account
and will be an "ultramodern factory of the latest technology"
According to the radio host
Huawei is investing EUR200 million in the project
which will create 300 direct jobs and is projected to start manufacturing 5G equipment in 2025
including the challenge of the US sanctions
Despite a substantial 30% revenue loss due to US sanctions
Huawei has increased its investments in research and development
Zhang said Huawei invested CNY22 to 23 billion until last year
including EUR80 million or more in research in France each year
He claimed that Huawei is self-sufficient in chips, including those for smartphones. The launch of Huawei's Mate 60 Pro smartphone in late September made waves as various teardown reports showed that the Kirin 9000S chip inside the smartphone was manufactured with SMIC 7nm process
which used immersion deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines to produce advanced chips with multiple patterning on masks
Zhang said the company also aims to provide core systems for cloud computing. Since advanced AI chips are also under the export control of the US government, Huawei is seizing the opportunity to supply its LLM-operating compatriots with specialized chips as an alternative to American AI chips made by Nvidia and AMD
Zhang highlighted the company's diversification beyond telecommunications into automotive systems
He noted the importance of these investments in driving Huawei's global digital transformation initiatives
While dispelling speculations about Huawei becoming a car manufacturer
Zhang clarified that Huawei is focused on supplying intelligent electric systems for electric vehicles
The company aspires to collaborate with global car manufacturers and extend its innovations beyond China
When questioned about potential partnerships or plans with European or French car manufacturers
Zhang maintained confidentiality as he cited industrial and commercial secrecy
The interview shed light on Huawei's resilience in the face of challenges
and Huawei's strategic shift towards diverse technological sectors beyond its traditional telecommunications focus
Huawei continues to navigate global concerns
affirming its position as a player in the evolving digital landscape
Huawei finds France particularly appealing due to its rich and dynamic tech ecosystem
and the availability of a talented pool of researchers
Emphasizing the significance of innovation
he highlighted Huawei's support for French startups through dedicated programs and the influential role played by France's tech community
As Huawei faces challenges regarding its involvement in 5G infrastructure
particularly with security concerns raised by various countries
Zhang underscored the collaborative efforts with the Agence Nationale de la Sécurité des Systèmes d'Information (ANSSI) to establish transparency and trust
He discussed Huawei's commitment to abide by security standards and its ongoing collaboration with ANSSI
Zhang denied that Huawei will pull out of Europe's 5G market
it is continuing to deploy 5G base stations with SFR and Bouygues
two major operators in France that are required to dismantle Huawei antennas in 2028

ASU junior Anne Kuhm strikes a pose before her routine on the uneven parallel bars at the Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe
Being the only athlete on her team from another country is a task junior gymnast Anne Kuhm had to face when she joined the ASU gymnastics program this season
She was presented with an array of obstacles to overcome but has succeeded in her first year as a Sun Devil
Hailing from Brumath, France, Kuhm came to ASU with a number of notable accomplishments, including being a member of the French national team since 2009 and competing in the 2012 London Olympics for team France.
With a surplus of accomplishments on her resume
Kuhm made a heavy impact on the Sun Devils' season right away
leading her teammates on bars with a 9.825 in their first meet of the season
competing on the college level has differed from her other experiences because now
it’s not only about her own accomplishments
“The bigger difference here is everyone is cheering for you,” Kuhm said
“You have your entire team when you’re doing your routine
“NCAA’s a little different than elite,” Santos said
“We’ve always seen the gymnastics in practice
and I think she’s just gotten more accustomed to competing and how we do it here.”
Santos said that he's seen Kuhm transition successfully and believes she has settled into her new role
it’s not just her success on the mat that makes Kuhm essential to the program – it’s how she’s received outside of the meets as well
“Anne is literally the sweetest person,” junior Justine Callis said
We didn't know how funny she was until we got to know her a little more ..
she’s constantly taking the pressure off of situations
Callis said she hasn't competed with anyone more consistent than Kuhm
and that it's one of her strongest characteristics
“Mentally she’s just a really tough gymnast because she's not all over the place,” Callis said
While Callis said her teammate may show a light and fun personality
and I think a lot of her background helps her out on the competition floor because she’s been to the Olympics
she’s been to Worlds (and) she’s done a lot of competitions with a lot of high-pressure situations," Callis said
“She does a good job of bringing that consistency she has in the gym onto the mat."
Kuhm has displayed excellence throughout the season
but Kuhm believes she still has room to grow in each of her routines.
“My vaults are becoming better and I'm focusing on high-landing much more than I used to,” Kuhm said
I'm trying to slow down and do what Jay (Santos) told me to do
Kuhm noted that one of the differences coming from international gymnastics to college meant a difference in how she competed
her floor routine as a Sun Devil is more lively and full of smiles
I have a lot more than I used to have because in elite you can smile and everything
Kuhm and the rest of her teammates will travel up the coast of California to Sacramento one more time for their final meet of the regular season

Huawei Technologies Co's planned factory in France shows its commitment to serve the European market with openness despite challenges and geopolitical uncertainties
said in a video interview with France Inter
a major French public radio channel and part of Radio France
with an investment of 200 million euros ($215 million)
is expected to be operational by the end of 2025
located in the city of Brumath in France's Northeast Grand-Est region
Huawei said in a statement in 2020 that the factory
aims to produce a billion euros worth of mobile network technology solutions for the Chinese telecom equipment maker's European customers annually
an assistant research fellow at the Institute of European Studies at the Beijing-based China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations
said Huawei has been facing increasing pressure from the United States and some of its allies in Europe
due to so-called national security concerns
no factual evidence to back such concerns has been displayed
adding that building a factory in France shows Huawei's openness and its commitment to serving the European market
director-general of the Information Consumption Alliance
said Europe is an important market for Huawei and it is seen by founder Ren Zhengfei as a second home for the company
which will be highly automated and intelligent
can help drive the technical competitiveness of the European industry and boost the resilience of local supply chains as well as infrastructure
The factory is part of Huawei's broader plan to invest in France
to support digital transformation in the country and the development of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence
When her mother Anne died, author JK ‘Jo’ Rowling had only just begun writing her Harry Potter novels. To her daughter’s abiding regret, Anne never lived to see the boy wizard become a global phenomenon. “She never knew I’d had the idea of my life to date,” says Jo at the start of her episode of Who Do You Think You Are?
Anne was keenly interested in learning more about her roots
but never found the time to explore her French genealogy
This is something her daughter wants to correct
It’s the beginning of a personal journey that demolishes a long-treasured family story and reveals three generations of indomitable single mothers
These include letters from Jo’s French great grandfather
was born on 31 July 1877 – the same birthday as both Jo and Harry Potter
Jo’s especially keen to know more about Louis because it’s said he received the French Légion d’honneur for his bravery in the First World War
It’s an award that Jo herself received in 2009
But Jo’s research into Louis’ life doesn’t begin in Paris, it begins in London, where Louis worked as a waiter. Having come to the capital in the 1890s, Louis rose to become head wine waiter at the Savoy Hotel in the 1920s, a prestigious job. Sadly, his marriage was less successful: a 1911 census entry shows Lizzie as the 'head' of her household and Louis living alone
Louis crossed the English Channel to serve in the French army
Jo hopes to learn how he won his Légion d’honneur
The records show a “phenomenally brave” Louis Volant did receive the award
historian Captain Ivan Cadeau has the answer
Louis was a corporal in the 16th Territorial Regiment
made up of older soldiers whose job was supposed to be to guard roads and bridges
Louis found himself leading a small platoon holding off a German attack on the village of Courcelles-le-Comte in order to cover his regiment’s retreat
He killed several enemy soldiers and was seriously wounded by a shell
he was given the prestigious Croix de guerre – a medal given to ordinary soldiers
the Légion d’honneur then being reserved for officers
After seeing Louis’ grave (sadly, a communal plot), Jo wants to go back another generation and learn about his mother, Salomé Schuch. Another shock awaits. Louis was illegitimate
born at a time when Salomé was working as a maid in Paris
as many as 30 per cent of babies in the city were born to unmarried mothers
because Salomé eventually married the father of her subsequent children (and perhaps of Louis)
“This was a woman who was a survivor,” says Jo
The same proves to be true of Salomé’s mother
who had seven children but found herself widowed and living through tumultuous times
which was annexed during the bloody Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71 and didn’t return to French control until 1918
Jo meets a cousin descended from Christine’s youngest child
Jo’s research into her French roots has come to an end
For someone who raised her own daughter as a single mother
who left Brumath for Paris as a teenager and bravely built a life for herself
Jo reflects on her experiences: “My mother would have adored every moment of this,” she says
Watch unseen footage from JK Rowling's episode:
under pressure from Western governments suspicious it presents a security risk
is to open its first mobile network plant outside China in 2023 in eastern France
Huawei vice president and supervisory board member Catherine Chen told a video press conference
The site “could produce the first mobile station sometime in 2023,” she said
adding that the official decision to locate a manufacturing plant outside China represented “an historic date for Huawei”
the company said it would invest at least €200 million and create 300 jobs to start with at the “Huawei European Wireless Factory” in Brumath
the site aims to produce €1 billion of mainly 5G equipment per year for the European market
The Chinese group is under pressure both from accusations by the US that its mobile network equipment is a spying risk
and charges that it has assisted efforts by Beijing to monitor Uighur Muslims
have restricted if not outright banned Huawei equipment from their 5G mobile networks
Huawei has rejected accusations that Beijing could access its equipment to snoop on voice and data traffic

Home > NEWS > Shell’s Bitumen CarbonSink used in France for first time
Shell’s new bio-component binder that locks carbon within roads instead of releasing it back into the atmosphere
has been used in France for the first time
where 20 tonnes of Shell Bitumen CarbonSink was used in the construction of a car park at Brumath Enrobés’s asphalt production plant in Bas-Rhin
The asphalt for this project was laid by civil construction company
Shell Bitumen CarbonSink contains a new biocomponent binder that locks carbon into asphalt and bitumen
turning the road into a technical carbon sink
The high level of asphalt recycling around the world ensures carbon remains locked in the binder
even when it is recycled and re-used in the manufacture of new asphalts or other civil engineering applications
“The decarbonisation of the construction industry is a challenge that will require effort from each part of the value chain
and this project is a great example of that type of cross-sector collaboration,” said Ana Alvernhe
we want to use our experience in the energy industry to deliver innovations that can support our customers’ net-zero ambitions – so it is fantastic to see Shell Bitumen CarbonSink used for the first time in France
helping to drive the decarbonisation of construction in another important market.”
The technical carbon sink created by Shell Bitumen CarbonSink locks in up to 250kg of CO2 equivalent into each tonne of bitumen and by up to 13kg of CO2 equivalent in each tonne of asphalt
This means up to six tonnes of CO2 equivalent can be locked in per kilometre of road
which has already been deployed in the UK by Aggregate Industries for its SuperLow-Carbon asphalt
is being launched in multiple markets to be used at scale across the global road network
