the ENS cachan paris-saclay in france has selected renzo piano building workshop — from five other shortlisted firms (JLCG arquitectos / GM – guervilly maffret; lacaton and vassal / druot architecture; atelier lion / marc mimram / ignacio prego/; and michel rémon group / jacques ripault) — to develop a 64,000 square meter building as part of its campus project
the volumes are positioned along the perimeter of the premises
forming a rectangular organization which features a garden at its heart; in which more than one hectare of surrounding green space defines the readability of the structures
the plan revolves around several architectural focal points which speak of the school’s focus on science
technology and humanities — a pluralist design approach that accommodates the varying needs of the educational facility
as well as reflecting the diverse research and knowledge accumulated within the confines of its walls
these include a completely transparent south facing façade that allows passersby to look in and view the various on-goings and programs within: a cafeteria
media and learning center; and rounded volumes housing the departments of science
humanities and social sciences positioned on opposite ends of the site that connect and balance out the strict linear quality of the buildings that run along the length of the property
aerial view of the campus which is designed in a vis-à-vis arrangement
piano focused on realizing a campus which emphasizes structural performance and functionality
this is evidenced in the aforementioned vis-à-vis which offers a convenient network of pathways that make it easy to navigate between the associated structures
the façade construction is primarily made of large ‘gates’ which allow for a flexible and semi-transparent configuration of classrooms
piano’s ENS cachan paris-saclay campus also functions as a dynamic ecosystem reducing its resource requirements
this is achieved through a compact establishment whose openness and transparency allows for solar gain for naturally heating the interior
the utilization of a passive cooling system
the new ENS cachan paris-saclay campus is set for completion in 2018

What inspired the cutesy art style of a dark theme
Alfroy: “It’s because the creative director is fascinated with everything that is macabre and gothic
he is talented with any matter with an obsession Cachan
this mixed with Cachan could be good for him
and so we go with the cutey part of the death.”
Is there going to be a lot of comedy in it or will there also be drama in the overall emotion of the game
the tone of the game is very cartoonistic with sarcastic humor
we want to talk about dark themes like death
But it will be done colorfully and in a light way to approach a dark subject.”
How long do you plan to have it in Early Access before its final release
First plan is since we are still so early into development
We want to support the game for at least a year
but we do not know yet if we want to go further or not
It will depend on how we feel about the game; if we want to keep adding more stuff or if we feel like the game is done.”
Alfroy: “We know how to finish the game and what content we want to add
Will we see any of your personal passions spill over into the game
such as cooking or sports events or mini-games
Alfroy: “We are focused on combat and action
along with everything with the mechanics.”
Dutertre: “No there will not be mini-games
we do not want to dilute the experience of roguelike and combat.”
Are there plans set for after Have a Nice Death or are you hopeful the reception will be well enough for a second entry for the series
Right now we are really focused on the release and are not thinking 5-10 years ahead
so we are not thinking about the long term.”
With such strong backgrounds that include AAA development
why did you choose to step into an indie game studio
First one was that there is a bit more freedom on how we can approach the game because we know that we are going to touch some dark subjects
I’m perfectly aware that in some big companies these can be dangerous to talk about
we have one department that is about physical disease and so you fight a big monster that we present a very bad disease in the world
I am pretty sure we would not be able to do that in every company
The second thing is to maybe try to narrow a bit the frame of the game
We don’t need to add 50 square kilometers with thousands of quests with lots of music
These games are ones I personally love to game; indie games
this is the beginning of the dream titles for me.”
Anything you would like to tell your anticipating players
perhaps an easter egg you’d like to hint at
Alfroy: “There will definitely be some Easter Egg
But we are looking forward to the feedback from the community
because we need that because we hope to build a great game
We can’t wait for the release of the game.”
we are very excited to be able to share the game with the public now
The reception has been very satisfying and people have been sending us some fan art that is sometimes really funny
and so people have been drawing our character
This conversation definitely has me even more excited for the release of Have a Nice Death and I look forward to sharing some feedback with them after trying it out myself
What did you think of our interview with the developers
Will you be diving into the death-themed desk job this week

Fingerprints are essential evidence in numerous criminal investigations. However, scientific police can find it difficult to make use of such fingerprints when they are too light or their contrast is too low. When someone places their finger on an object, they leave behind a trace composed of water, salts, fats, amino acids, and, potentially, DNA
the most widely used technique is fuming (spraying a substance in the atmosphere of an airtight enclosure) of a cyanoacrylate compound best known as "Super Glue." This reacts with the elements present in the fingerprint and polymerizes
leaving a white deposit that technicians can then photograph and analyze
this technique can at times entail certain difficulties
when the fingerprint support is of light color
the contrast with the fingerprint is too low to be photographed
the deposit will be too tenuous to obtain an exploitable image
crime scene investigators can opt for a second treatment using a colorant
this post-treatment poses several problems
The products in question are toxic and carcinogenic and have to be used in a fume cupboard
whose cost is usually beyond the means of most police stations
this process can require up to 48 hours and can degrade the fingerprints through leaching
which in most cases compromises the sampling of DNA
numerous chemists have been trying for the past three decades to come up with a product allowing fluorescent fingerprints to be detected directly
The newly developed Lumicyano allows this with the use of a conventional cyanoacrylate; to manage this
the researchers combined cyanoacrylate with a molecule of the tetrazine family
the smallest fluorescent colorants known to date
Tetrazine molecules are fumed along with the cyanoacrylate onto the fingerprint support and adhere to the deposit
using a simple UV lamp or forensic lighting techniques; the fluorescent traces are visible and can be photographed
Lumicyano does not destroy the DNA that can sometimes be extracted from fingerprints
The product will be presented at the forthcoming Worldwide Internal State Security Exhibition (Milipol
scheduled for 19-22 November 2013 in Paris Nord Villepinte

The observer’s role in quantum mechanics has been confirmed to be very weird indeed
Researchers in France have finally carried out John Wheeler’s famous “delayed choice” thought experiment
in which the intent is to determine exactly when photons decide to act like particles or waves; the experiment relies on a single-photon source developed for quantum-cryptography experiments
The particle/wave debate in quantum mechanics has raised the specter of the observer as an inherent part of the act of measurement
and lured the philosophically minded physicist John Wheeler to ask: does a photon know it’s being watched
he proposed a variation on the famed Young’s double-slit experiment
in which the decision to observe wave or particle behavior is made after the photon has passed the slits
Several attempts have been made over the years to carry out the thought experiment
but complications have arisen largely in the search for a sufficiently stable single-photon source
Alain Aspect and Philippe Grangier at the Laboratoire Charles Fabry de l’Institut d’Optique (Paris
France) have been working on such sources since the 1980s for similar single-photon interference work
they joined Jean-François Roch and colleagues at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan (Cachan
The team’s single-photon source is the fluorescence provided by optically pumping a single nitrogen vacancy inside a diamond nanocrystal
which is bound in a spin-coated polymer on a dielectric mirror
In contrast to the more common downconversion or attenuation approaches to single-photon production
the fluorescence-based source is extremely stable and leaves no doubt that just one photon is available for experimenting
The source is ideal for quantum cryptography
but clearly lends itself to more fundamental research
“This is one of the most fascinating quantum states of light that you can imagine,” Roch says
“We had the idea that it was worth using this amazingly stable source for revisiting the single-photon-interference experiments to realize Wheeler’s gedanken experiment.”
The experiment uses a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (see figure)
at the end of which is an output beamsplitter and an electro-optic modulator (EOM).1 In the absence of a voltage applied to the EOM
the arrival of a photon at either detector clearly indicates the photon’s path within the interferometer
the paths effectively recombine and it is impossible to know which path the photon took
the detectors register an interference pattern
Wheeler’s experiment is realized because the decision to apply a voltage to the EOM is made when the photon is already midway through a path of some 48 m between the input and output beamsplitters
That choice is made by a quantum random-number generator that measures the shot noise on a white-light source; positive and negative values of the noise serve as a digital on/off for the EOM
the decision to look for waves or particles influences the behavior of the photon in the past
The result-quantum-mechanically unsurprising but until now unattempted-is that the experimental photon acts as a particle when the beamsplitter is not active
but as a wave when the beamsplitter is active; it doesn’t matter that the beamsplitter is activated or deactivated after the photon “chooses” its character
“This is a beautiful example of quantum strangeness,” says Marlan Scully
a professor at both Princeton and Texas A&M University with a long history in quantum-optics experiments
“The photon cannot ‘know’ if the beamsplitter is in place or not-the choice of wave-like (beamsplitter in) or particle-like (beamsplitter out) is made well after the light pulse has left the input beamsplitter.”
but considers such affirmations of quantum mechanics inherently useful
our ordinary images fail at one point or another,” he says
“Pointing out exactly where they fail is always very useful and stimulating.”

Discover what the most popular suburbs of Paris have to offer in the way of property prices
By Martina Di Gregorio
While living in Paris might sound like a dream for many people, the reality of finding a home in the capital can be a challenge given the rising cost of rent and the fact that apartments are getting smaller
Some Parisian neighborhoods may also be too loud and crowded with tourists
making them less appealing to those looking to settle down
if you are looking for a bigger home with a garden
the suburbs of Paris might be a better option
From the international vibrance of Croissy-sur-Seine to the elegance of Versailles
there are many desirable places to consider
they offer accommodation of every kind to suit a variety of preferences and budgets
To give you an idea of what’s on offer
this article includes the following information:
Looking for an easy way to find your next home
Spotahome is an online property portal operating in France that takes the stress out of renting
and book your next rental property without leaving home
Finding housing in Paris and its surrounding suburbs can be challenging and time-consuming
especially for those who are not familiar with the local property market
you will need to find the right suburb to match your budget and preferred lifestyle before beginning your search for a home
there are multiple websites that make house-hunting easier
SeLoger is particularly popular among internationals seeking accommodation in the Parisian suburbs
The portal allows you to search under Louer (rent) for apartments for rent
You then need to enter the postcode of the town or area you prefer and click on Rechercher (search)
Before deep-diving into the many apartments available
you can add filters such as pieces or chambres (rooms) and Extérieur (exterior) where you can specify whether you want a garden
You can also filter by Meublé (furnished) or Non meublé (unfurnished)
depending on whether you want to bring your own furniture
you can head to Acheter (buy) and start your search
Moving to France: the ultimate checklist for your move
it might be worth searching for short and mid-term rentals on portals such as:
might also want to join some of the local Facebook groups where people often post apartments or rooms for rent
as well as search for roommates or sublets for short periods of time
Some suburbs are also more affordable and spacious
with family houses that come with gardens and parking spaces that allow for an easier commute to Paris
Rental costs in the suburbs of Paris can vary greatly
there are some suburbs in which prices are on par with the city center
these prices are increasing every year as the areas continue to improve their urban plans
You can find the most up-to-date rental costs on SeLoger
Similar to rental costs, property prices in the suburbs of Paris are lower than in the capital, where the average cost exceeds €10,000 per square meter
The city of Paris is divided into twenty districts – or arrondissements – which are arranged in the form of a clockwise spiral. However, the city and its surrounding suburbs (or banlieues) make up the region of Île-de-France
This consists of eight administrative departments
Essonne, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, Seine-et-Marne, Val-de-Marne, Val-d’Oise
According to statistics from 2020, 19% of the population of metropolitan France live within Île-de-France
making it the most populated region in the country
demographics vary significantly throughout the departments
Seine-Saint-Denis in the northeast and Val-d’Oise in the northwest were formerly industrial and working-class zones
the southern department of Essonne and the western department of Yvelines are predominantly inhabited by the upper class
reputations also vary from suburb to suburb
and Maisons-Laffitte are known to be some of the most affluent and desirable areas in Paris
are also considered to be ‘unsafe’
while other residential areas like Fontenay-aux-Roses
To give you more of an overview of the Paris suburbs
below is a summary of some of the most popular ones to live in among the expat community
Situated just 14km from the center of Paris, Chatou is a family-friendly suburb with many green spaces, making it the perfect location for those looking to escape the bustling city and enjoy some nature. However, although it is only a 15-minute commute with the RER line A
meaning that many residents (or Catoviens) choose to own cars and houses usually have parking
Chatou is perhaps best known for its Ile des Impressionistes
(Island of Impressionists) which is located in the Seine River and got its name due to its popularity among multiple 19th-century artists such as Monet and Renoir
and open woodland where visitors can relax and enjoy nature
Art is still an important part of life in Chatou, and it hosts multiple art, music, and antique festivals every year, including the Chatou Island Festival and the National Antique Fair
Whether you are single and looking to move to Paris for work, or you are a parent with young children seeking peace and quiet
the rest of the town continues with its daily routine
While Versailles may be more suited to working people and families, students might find themselves more drawn to Orsay. The university town is located 20km southwest of Paris, with a direct train providing easy access to the capital. The RER B is the cheapest option for those who commute daily
and it takes around 30 minutes to reach the Cité Universitaire stop
Orsay offers a mix of affordable apartments and family homes with gardens
with a two-bedroom apartment costing between €1,000 and €2,100 per month
these prices vary yearly depending on inflation
The suburb provides ample green space, with the Bois de la Cyprenne – a small forest inside the city – offering a scenic escape from the hustle and bustle. Osary also boasts a variety of entertainment, including lectures and exhibitions at the Musée d’Orsay
Those who love nightlife will also enjoy the various bars
and restaurants in the student quarters.
it can take up to an hour to reach the city by car
or even longer during peak times.
although all that remains are outbuildings
Another attraction is the Hippodrome de Saint-Cloud racecourse, where the Saint-Cloud Grand Prix takes place every year. Rock music lovers might also find themselves in this suburb when the annual Rock en Seine festival comes to town
Saint-Germain-en-Laye is a quintessential French town that embraces a diverse and multicultural community. Located 15km west of Paris, the suburb is most suited to expat families, and is home to Lycée International de Saint-Germain-en-Laye; one of the top international schools in France
which features beautiful gardens and a panoramic view of western Paris
All of this is only 20 minutes away from the capital, with multiple bus routes and local trains on the RER A line connecting the two
Located 7km northwest of Paris, in the department of Hauts-de-Seine, Neuilly-sur-Seine is one of the most expensive cities in France
with rental prices exceeding €12,000 per square meter
those looking to rent or buy in the area will need to have a hefty budget
Although it is close to Paris, the suburb is relatively quiet and primarily residential with many family homes and multiple parks attracting expats with children. It is also home to Marymount
and offers easy access to other international schools in the neighboring 16th arrondissement.
which attract thousands of tourists each year
Commuting to the center of Paris is an easy 20-minute metro trip or a half-hour drive for those who are brave enough to face the city’s infamous traffic. There are also multiple buses and local rail connections that provide easy access to the rest of the country
Situated in the affluent department of Yvelines, Croissy-sur-Seine is particularly attractive to expats due to its strong English-speaking community and the fact that it is home to the British School of Paris; one of the best international schools in France
Similar to other popular suburbs, Croissy-sur-Seine is well connected to Paris, with the RER A line taking around 20 minutes
which is ideal for those looking to commute
Nogents-sur-Marne is a charming commuter town that lies 10km east of Paris on the River Marne. The suburb offers convenient access to the Bois de Vincennes which features several lakes
The River Marne is also a popular destination for swimming and rowing enthusiasts
those surrounding Paris are diverse in terms of demographics
While some are known for their excellent amenities
it might not be the most suitable place to live for those with children
it is important to do your research and ask for recommendations from local expat groups to ensure that it is a safe and desirable place to live

Study Inspired by 2010 Tsunami Yields Findings That Fly in the Face of Generations of Common Wisdom

A long-held belief that offshore islands protect the mainland from tsunamis turns out to be the exact opposite of the truth
Common wisdom — from Southern California to the South Pacific — for coastal residents and scientists alike has long been that offshore islands would create a buffer that blocked the power of a tsunami
computer modeling of tsunamis striking a wide variety of different offshore island geometries yielded no situation in which the mainland behind them fared better
increasing flooding on the mainland by up to 70 percent
“This is where many fishing villages are located
in the belief that they will be protected from wind waves
Even Southern California residents believe that the Channel Islands and Catalina will protect them,” said Costas Synolakis of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering
a member of the multinational team that conducted the research
The research was inspired by a field survey of the impact of the 2010 tsunami on the Mentawai Islands off of Sumatra
The survey data showed that villages located in the shadow of small offshore islets suffered some of the strongest tsunami impacts
worse than villages located along open coasts
Subsequent computer modeling by Jose Borrero
adjunct assistant research professor at the USC Viterbi Tsunami Research Center
showed that the offshore islands had actually contributed to — not diminished — the tsunami’s impact
Synolakis then teamed up with researchers Emile Contal and Nicolas Vayatis of Ecoles Normales de Cachan in Paris; and Themistoklis S
who both have joint appointments at Ecoles Normales de Cachan and University College Dublin to determine whether that was a one-of-a-kind situation
of which Dias was the corresponding author
was published in Proceedings of the Royal Society A on Nov
The team designed a computer model that took into consideration various island slopes
“Even a casual analysis of these factors would have required hundreds of thousands of computations
each of which could take up to half a day,” Synolakis said
Machine learning is a mathematical process that makes it easier to identify the maximum values of interdependent processes with multiple parameters by allowing the computer to “learn” from previous results
The computer starts to understand how various tweaks to the parameters affect the overall outcome and finds the best answer quicker
results that traditionally could have taken hundreds of thousands of models to uncover were found with 200 models
“This work is applicable to some of our tsunami study sites in New Zealand,” said Borrero
who is producing tsunami hazard maps for regions of the New Zealand coast
“The northeast coast of New Zealand has many small islands offshore
and our modeling suggests that this results in areas of enhanced tsunami heights.”
“Substantial public education efforts are needed to help better explain to coastal residents tsunami hazards
and whenever they need to be extra cautious and responsive with evacuations during actual emergencies,” Synolakis said
The research was funded by EDSP of ENS-Cachan; the Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Dublin; the ERC; SFI; University College Dublin; and the EU FP7 program ASTARTE. The study can be found online at http://rspa.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/470/2172/20140575

We caught up (virtually) with the trailblazing Argentine artist to discuss bureaucracy
defying categorisation and his latest wave of optokinetic art
are reductive. I would prefer to be classified as an experimentalist
‘I would prefer to be classified as an experimentalist.’
Does he think the art bureaucracy he so distrusted has improved since
‘The situation is worse,’ he responds categorically
‘Artists don’t have a say in the decision-making process
The market is practically the only system that gives value to contemporary creation
we need to find new ways of assigning value
institutions internationally adhere to that system.’ We’ll have to see if such a paradigm shift becomes conceivable in the post-pandemic era

What: The Pierre Hardy 101 sneakers from the Poworama capsule collection
Who: Pierre Hardy has been designing shoes under his own name for 20 years
The Parisian-born Hardy graduated from L’Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan with a degree in plastic arts
he eventually got a job at Dior designing shoes
but eventually designing the men’s collections as well
Hardy launched his eponymous label in ’99
In 2001 the French luxury house appointed him creative director of the fine jewelry and “Haute Bijouterie” collections
Why: This update on Hardy’s 101 sneaker is part of the Poworama capsule collection
inspired by the Summer 2012 Collector Poworama sneaker
The original shoe paid tribute to the Pop Art movement of the ’60s and Roy Lichtenstein in particular
This version of the 101 knocks the theme out of the park
with distinct graphic elements and a lot of fun
an explosion of joy and lightness,” says Hardy
“This collection is full of dynamism

- Could you tell us about collaborative research in which you’ve been involved
- How would you explain the difference between the research systems in France and Japan
One typical feature of the public research structure in France is the UMRs (Unités Mixte de Recherché
which are units resulting from the association of research organizations such as CNRS and institutions of higher education such as universities
multiple universities and research bodies cooperate by providing research budgets
one UMR has several full professors or equivalent level staff
and the system is different from the Japanese academic chair system
Another difference is that in most cases in France a student starts research in the last semester of his or her second year of their master's course
and carries out research full time in the laboratory once they are enrolled in the doctoral course
they immediately start to engage in research work on a full-time daily basis as a member of a laboratory
many French researchers are thus impressed by the number of students in the laboratories
and some of them would like the French students to start laboratory work from an earlier stage
master’s students have research training for three to four months during the first year of their master’s course
This training is not necessarily carried out in their university
and recently an increasing number of students are going abroad for this
research periods in foreign laboratories were introduced and in many departments students are required to have international experience of this kind
about 70 percent of the master’s students go on toward doctoral degrees
- How do you see the current situation at French universities when they apply for outside funding
Could you give some examples from your experience
a federation gathering 19 research and higher education institutions
Along with partners such as Universite Paris-Sud and École Polytechnique
ENS Cachan is now on the way to transfer school buildings into the Saclay area by 2018
doctoral and master's degrees are cooperatively conducted within and granted by Université Paris-Saclay
extensive financial resources through means such as IDEX ("Initiative of Excellence") and LABEX ("Laboratory of Excellence") were granted
making collaboration within the federation possible and deepening the relationships between the partner institutions so that they may gather their forces
As a major part of the French research and higher education policy
these federations are developed on a nationwide scale
Considered the " backbone " of the Grand Paris Express, line 14 was extended to the north and south on June 24
Orly airport can now be reached from Saint-Denis Pleyel in just 40 minutes
As work continues on the 60 or so new stations, Société des grands projets is taking advantage of the European Heritage Days to open the doors of 8 of them to the general public
