which even late in life still furnishes illusions and sometimes joy.”
Renoir sitting on the steps of his flat on rue Giradon
The words of Renoir remind me of Winston Churchill and his thoughts how painting saved his life during losses and turmoil
painting got them through their difficult times
is where Pierre-Auguste Renoir would spend his final years
and for years suffered a great deal of pain
but his spirit to do what he loved never let him down
For a few hours instead of pain his mind could be carried away into the canvas where a pretty picture would emerge
It’s these years of Renoir’s life and his indomitable spirit that most move me
Renoir’s flat at the Château de Brouillards
Auguste was in bed with a pulmonary infection
His son Jean related the story that a few hours before his father’s passing he had asked his nurse for his paintbrushes and palette to paint some flowers
‘I think I’m beginning to understand something about this’.” Pierre-Auguste Renoir died December 3
One of the last photos taken of Renoir before he ws only able to paint whilst sitting
It’s often written that the paint brushes were “tied” to Renoir’s hands
very clearly sets the record straight: “brushes were slid into shriveled hands that had been bandaged to avoid irritation…a false impression that still cannot be dispelled.”
Les Collettes was always a house I wanted to visit
The first time was in 1994 only to find the house was closed
I can’t stress enough that if you want to visit
one could go up to the house and wander around the grounds any time
I did take a picture in 1994 of the small window by the door and painted a picture
I returned in 2007 when the studio in the house was set up as though he had just left the room
The interior of the villa is understated and charming
Much like Malmaison in that it would be quite livable
Self portrait “There is not a trace of complacency in this image of an old man that Renoir painted of himself in 1910.” Renoir
The location is everything with its sweeping views of Cagnes-sur-Mer in the distance and beautiful grounds with ancient olive trees
Below the low wall in front of the villa facing Cagnes is an orchard of orange trees
had orange trees and mandarin orange trees
One can only imagine how delicious the air when the orange blossoms are in bloom
but severe rheumatoid arthritis also began that same year and these attacks would prompt him to go to the south of France during the winter months
The warm climate for his health was the main reason to make the move
There was only a farm house so he had a villa built
he and his family lived in the Ville de la Poste in Cagnes
Painting at the Ville de la Poste in Cagnes-sur-Mer where la famille Renoir lived as the villa Les Collettes was being built
A large studio with many windows would also be built among a grove of olive trees on the grounds of Les Collettes
The openness of the studio gave him the feeling of painting outside as his health and confinement to a wheelchair had curtailed his ability to paint en plein air
he was unable to walk after suffering from a stroke
What strength he had was preserved for painting
The household evolved completely around Renoir’s painting
“Now that I can no longer count on my arms and legs
Most of his time was spent at Les Collettes
but he retained his flat on Boulevard Rochechouart in Paris
He was able to attend one of the earliest performances of the Ballet Russe in Paris in 1911
that had recently come into the national collection
it was not the first of his works to hang in the Louvre
enough of them will assure me a place in the French school
such good company…with nothing flashy about it.”
Graves of Renoir and his wife Aline in the Essoyes cemetery
so I painted a picture of the window by the front door
my favorites are his small vibrant paintings of oranges and cups
Oranges often appear in his small still life paintings…some painted very late in his life
There is something about oranges in the south of France that makes you want to paint them
There are those that have said Renoir’s paintings are idealized
as you can see he remained resolute and unapologetic in regards to his style:
Therefore it should be as rich as possible
For me a painting…should be something to cherish
pretty!” —Renoir to Albert André 1919
Switzerland’s Sven Thalmann claimed an astonishing and record-breaking first pro triathlon victory in France on Saturday – despite twice being stung on his neck by a jellyfish in the swim
whose previous highest finish had been fourth at IRONMAN 70.3 Switzerland earlier this month
led from the start at Challenge Cagnes-sur-Mer in the south of France
but it wasn’t just his rivals he had to battle
For not long after an early start at Hippodrome beach
Thalmann revealed he was stung twice by a jellyfish – but he overcame that adversity to exit the sea first and never looked back
saw Thalmann’s luck change when France’s Simon Viain – who had moved into the lead – suffered a mechanical and Thalmann took advantage
He was first into T2 and then established a 42-second lead over Viain early on the run before powering across the finish line in 3:58:53 to shatter the course record by more than 10 minutes
Jordi Montraveta Moya came through for second
Talking through his trials and tribulations afterwards
Thalmann said: “I got bitten two times by a jellyfish,” pointing to his neck where the scars were clearly still visible
“But somehow I managed to keep going and it didn’t really affect me
“Also the bike was really tough and I was suffering quite a lot on the uphill
I was forced to go out on my own and I managed to keep the lead
“It’s my first podium and first win – that’s more than I could have wished for so I am quite happy now.”
The women’s race also saw a course record
with France’s Aurélia Boulanger making it three wins out of three in 2024 after previous successes at Challenge Cesenatico and Challenge Salou

The dramatically crenelated Tudor style stone walls of the Château de Théoule come as a surprise in the sunny seaside town of Théoule-sur-Mer, which during the summertime is a 20-minute ferry across the azure waters of the Mediterranean to Cannes
This improbable Highlands look is explained by the fact that the last owner of the château was Lord Harry M
a Scott who remodeled a building that had originally been built to house a soap factory in 1630 in a style that would remind him of his homeland
In its latest incarnation, the fanciful structure has become part of a 44-room boutique hotel that also took the château’s name when it opened in May. Twenty rooms are located in the original building, while others are found in a fisherman’s house just above Théoule harbor, and the rest in a more modern Art Deco property next to the château
The gentle pastel decors of the hotel’s interiors
which recall some of the paintings that Matisse and Renoir did when they lived nearby in Nice and Cagnes-sur-Mer
a former antiques dealer who’s now the interior designer for Millésime Collection hotels
the small French chain of restored historical properties of which the Château de Théoule is a part
The ochre rocks and Mediterranean vegetation of the surrounding Massif d’Estérel were another source of inspiration for Mecoen
and every room is named for a different local herb
Mecoen also sourced a variety of vintage pieces for the property and commissioned custom-made linen curtains from the French brand Maison de Vacances
along with buying other fabrics and objects from Courant Sauvage
Tucked away in beautifully landscaped gardens overlooking the Mediterranean
the hotel’s best amenity is its Plage Blanche beach club
a well-groomed strand of white sand with well-spaced sunbeds and umbrellas facing the Bay of Cannes
Waiter service from the hotel’s Plage Blanche beach restaurant makes it a perfect place to spend a lazy day getting lost in a good book between swimming
maybe a well-chilled local rosé from the surrounding Var region
serves outdoors on a water-view terrace when possible and offers dishes like rock lobster pasta with herbs and a refreshing dessert of olives
The hotel’s three-room Ec(h)o spa uses Clarins and Kos Paris products for massages and skin

The sleepy coastal town of Cagnes-sur-Mer was rocked this week after a neighbourhood dispute ended in the death of a 40-year-old man
The incident took place in the Les Jardins de Cocagne residence in the early hours of Monday afternoon
The unfortunate event occurred after a family lunch apparently spilled over into a domestic squabble
prompting a neighbour to come over and complain about the excessive noise
the homeowners took the umbrella at the man’s interjection and the argument soon escalated into insults and threats
before coming back to the house in question and threatening violence if his wishes were not obeyed
it is believed that someone in the house responded by retrieving their own weapon – a rifle – and in the ensuing confusion
the man was shot and sustained serious injuries
paramedics arrived on the scene but were unable to revive the stricken party
who died later that afternoon from his wounds
An elderly lady is also thought to be mildly injured
while two young women were visibly shaken by the events of the afternoon
Although they were taken into custody for questioning
no details about the identity of the victim or the public
very little concrete information is known about the incident other than its location in the hilltop residence of Cagnes-sur-Mer
The investigation has been entrusted to the security forces of the Alpes-Maritimes department and several witnesses to the exact sequence of events
since a young man has already made it happen to the authorities
it does not appear to be a complicated case
More information is expected to be forthcoming in the next few days and weeks
WHAT is the compartment of your brain marked ‘racing’ concentrating on in late January
you are probably already starting to fast forward to Cheltenham in eight weeks’ time and trying to work out which Mullins superstar will run where or the identity of the ‘plot horse’ for one of the handicaps
flat racing fans should perhaps instead be keeping their eyes on far-flung Cagnes-sur-Mer
In 2023 that horse was the subsequent Arc hero
Ace Impact; this year the Mediterranean coastal venue witnessed the initial racecourse appearance of an unheralded Territories gelding named Lazzat
The Jerome Reynier trainee has since gone on to five further triumphs
culminating last Sunday in a dominant victory in Prix Maurice de Gheest
Lazzat breezed past the front-running Irish challenger
with just under a quarter mile of this six and a half furlong event remaining
before storming clear to lift the Group 1 prize by three lengths and three-quarters of a length from Exxtra and Beauvatier in a clean sweep for the home side
The next three places all went to British raiders
with Matilda Picotte dropping away to finish seventh
Owned by the Kazakhstan-born Nurlan Bizakov and bred at his Normandy base of Sumbe (formerly the Haras de Montfort et Preaux and the Haras de Mezeray)
Lazzat might normally be expected to now concentrate on clinching the title of Europe’s top sprinter
which a revised rating of 118 suggests he is currently in pole position to achieve
there is no pressure to stay at home and solidify his stallion credentials
with the French public currently infatuated by their athletes’ quest for gold
both Reynier and Bizakov were quick to inform that Lazzat’s unconventional end-of-season target would be his own tilt at that precious metal
in the shape of a race called the Golden Eagle
run on the first weekend in November over seven and a half furlongs at Rosehill Racecourse in Sydney
and worth no less than 10 million aussie dollars
Exxtra and Beuvatier may take up the mantle as the top local contenders for the seven-furlong Prix de la Foret on Arc Day in early October
while Flora Of Bermuda and Mill Stream are also set for a rematch in the Haydock Sprint Cup
the Christopher Head-trained Le Havre colt Ramadan
put two lesser efforts when stepped up to Group 1 company behind him when dropping back to a mile to land his second Group 3 of the campaign
The Prix du Moulin could now be on his agenda
though he too could be off on his travels in the autumn
Another possible contender for sprint championship honours emerged from the five-furlong Listed Prix du Cercle as Bradsell
trained in Britain by Archie Watson and racing for the first time in almost 11 months
registered a comfortable length and three-quarters victory
so I’m sure that he’ll improve for the run”
and Bradsell may be pointed at the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes
a race in which he finished third last year
there was a second British success when No Half Measures
landed the six-furlong Listed Prix Moonlight Cloud

American-born trainer Gina Rarick (writing as Backside) and racing journalist Alan Shuback (Frontside) are bringing a unique behind the scenes look each week from France's Hippodrome de la Cote d’Azur
a multi-purpose track that offers Thoroughbred racing during a six-week winter meet in the city of Cagnes-sur-Mer along the French Riviera
Last week's first installment of the Cagnes-sur-Mer diary included an introduction about the track and its location
along with the composition of Rarick's stable
18 GETTING DOWN TO WORK
Backside: Now that we've been here a few days and the first race meeting is over
Our horses do pretty much the same thing every day: walk up the main track
cross over the minefield of other tracks to get to the middle and then do one round of trotting at 1,000 meters (five furlongs) and two rounds of what the French would call either galop de chasse (literally a hunting canter) or petit canter
The two rounds total about 2,400 meters (a mile and a half)
Then we join other horses walking in the center circle for a couple of tours before we walk home
Sometimes these don't come in the same package
Bleu Astral is a nice big horse who can easily carry my weight of 72 kilos (just under 160 pounds)
but typical of a lot of horses coming from England
He's also not the most sensible horse in the world
particularly when we're in proximity to the trotters or the tractors harrowing the track
He was galloping along relatively nicely this morning when unfortunately the tractor driver chose that moment to start harrowing our galloping track
Bleu chose to lug out and cross into the hurdle track before finishing on the inside trotting track
bolting along with no idea of where he was going
I managed to get him back on the gallop track in front of the tractor
and I got him settled enough to finish his work
albeit missing a few back teeth from how hard I had to haul on his mouth to get him back under control
He doesn't seem to be a particularly unhappy horse here
calls for lunch and the manger is always cleaned
But our challenge is to get him to settle down a bit on the track
He's set to race on Saturday and will have one fast work before then
Bleu Astral's claimer drops down to 15 horses from 36 entered
which is often the case for an amateur race
but we have no better races for him at the moment
Mouhjim and King Driver are entered in the two-division handicap but there aren't many forfeits
so while King is sure to pass because of his higher rating
King Driver and Mouhjim make up the first set
with Fred Spanu working King because he will ride him on Saturday
they start out on the back turn of the 2,200-meter track and gradually accelerate though the backstretch
picking up speed in the far turn and then coming together to work as a pair up the straight
It usually turns out to be about seven furlongs (1,400 meters) of speed
and we work according to each horse's abilities
Workouts are not timed and we never push a horse - the speed comes from within
and when they get upsides they will naturally get on the bridle and work
Mouhjim accelerates a little too quickly in the stretch and King Driver has a bit of a challenge to catch him
but they both look very good passing the post
both horses striding out like they're enjoying themselves
Bleu seems comfortable out front but unpleasantly surprised when Ray moves upsides
He throws his head up a bit but then gets back on the bridle and they finish nicely
and he swaps leads impressively just before the post
telling his jockey he could keep going if he wanted
and have us looking forward to Saturday
(video of Ray of Hope and Bleu Astral breezing)
A DAY AT THE RACESFrontside: Today is Day 2 of the 19-day Cagnes-sur-Mer flat meeting
The first race goes off at 12:30 but unless you pay close attention to Paris-Turf
you might not wander onto the course until after the second or third race
The 19 days of racing include seven different post times
A late night before a day of racing and you would be forgiven for mistaking the first race 10,000-euro claimer for the third race 29,000-euro conditions race
The reason for the varied post times is to allow the Pari-Mutuel Urbaine (PMU
the off-track betting system) to stagger the start times of three or four national betting meetings
Sometimes Cagnes is designated the premier meeting
The result: a different post time almost every day
All of this is done in the interest of the bettor
yet a day at a French racecourse can be somewhat frustrating from a bettor’s point of view
and not necessarily from a winning or losing perspective
The most frequently expressed complaint from Americans visiting French racetracks is the lack of betting information available on-track
nor any large screens inside the grandstand
One must make do with small flat screen TV’s stationed here and there
And don’t expect to find anything but the win prices on display
The best you can do is to gauge what an exacta price might be by the advertised win prices
Just as frustrating is the 15-minute wait bettors must endure after a race to receive their winnings
The PMU doesn’t seem to understand that the sooner you put winnings into a bettor’s hands
the sooner he will plow it back into the system
And if there is a stewards’ inquiry thrown in for good measure
expect a 20 to 25-minute wait for your hard-earned cash
and take a long look at the sun glinting off the Mediterranean beyond the backstretch
The sublime view helps make up for any number of bizarre foreign customs
By Ramsey’s foundation stallion Kitten’s Joy
she rallied to finish a neck second to the 3-1 favorite
At least one American won some money at Cagnes-sur-Mer today
Tomorrow racegoers get to sleep late: first post isn’t until 1:50
THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF BLEU ASTRALFrontside: Bleu Astral may be one of the most difficult horses in the world to place in a race. The reason is the classification system France Galop employs in writing races
French races below group and listed level fall into six categories based on their prize money
Class A races include the very best conditions races; B races are the better handicaps and very good conditions races; D races are good conditions races and good handicaps; E
Maiden races may also be classed anywhere from B to G
Bleu Astral won a pair of Class 6 handicaps going a mile in Britain
seemingly the equivalent to an F race in France
deems even the cheapest races from any foreign country as the equivalent to D races in France
That means Bleu Astral is eliminated from any conditions race written to exclude D race winners
even though he has never won anything better than an F race
Bleu must either run in D races against any number of minor stakes winners or minor stakes-placed horses
He can’t even run in a handicap because a horse must have three runs in France before he is given a handicap rating
In his first start for High Street Racing at Deauville in December
he finished 10th of 13 in a D conditions race
he improved slightly but only finished ninth. On Saturday he will again run in a E claimer as he returns to a mile for the first time since his two wins at Ffos Las in August
Only then will he receive a rating enabling him to be entered in a handicap
But Gina has mastered the mysteries of the French condition book and always seems to find a spot where her entry can give a good account of himself
THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF BLEU ASTRAL (continued)Frontside: Tomorrow Bleu Astral goes in the Prix General Saint Didier
an unpretentious race with a high-minded name
which means that Bleu has a good chance of earning the High Street Racing Syndicate its first check
But as he’s entered for 20,000 euros ($22,000)
a finish in the first three would put him at risk in the claiming box
In France claims are put in for horses after the race
the French claiming process is akin to a silent auction
The price for which a horse is entered is the minimum price which a claimant may enter
If a claimant really wants a good chance of getting the horse
he must bid at least a few thousand euros higher
But the trainer and owner of a horse can try to protect their charge by entering a claim of their own
The difference between their horse’s claiming price and the amount of the owner’s bid goes to the French racing authority
Gina and her owners at High Street Racing would then have to decide whether he is worth protecting
may have yet unveiled another rising star today in Lukas Delozier
The seven-pound apprentice combined with trainer Henri-Alex Pantall for three winners on today’s card
a 7 1/2-furlong maiden on turf and a pair of one-mile claimers on Fibresand
Currently third in the French jockey standings
three-time listed winner Royal Dolois wired them in a 1 1/2-mile turf allowance in preparation for the listed Grand Prix de la Riviera later in the meeting
the 4-year-old Silver Frost colt was plucked out of a 26,000-euro ($30,000) claimer as a 2-year-old by owner Michel Ghys
His early season objective is the Group 3 Prix Exbury at Saint-Cloud in March
proved a handful in the morning and afternoon
Bleu is calm enough until we saddle him up
and he has a wrestling match on his hands getting Bleu to the gate
but then does what he wants to do in the morning - bolt off
and he gets his nose in front at one stage on the backstretch
but has no turn of foot to finish and ends up last in the field of eight
he confirms our impressions - the horse is impossible to control and basically in a panic the entire race
but unless we can get his head on straight

Measures to provide impetus to Flat turf racing at Cagnes-sur-Mer have been unveiled
and one wished for by Cagnes-sur-Mer racecourse
is the even split between races on turf and races on the all-weather during the meeting from January 15
40 per cent of races were run on the turf and 60 per cent on the all-weather
the two meetings previously held in February at Marseille Vivaux (all-weather) will now be run in February 2024 at Marseille-Borély (turf)
These two adjustments to the fixture list and in the programme will allow for an additional 30 races on turf in the south-east of France during the meeting while offering fewer races on the all-weather
president of the Association des Courses de la Côte d’Azur
detailed the changes in a press conference on Tuesday
when it was underlined that racing in the south-east of France in January and February will now offer a distinctive feature in terms of races at that time of the year in France which otherwise offers races only on the all-weather
Specific changes include to the Grand Prix de la Riviera Côte d’Azur
this Listed race is now scheduled on Saturday
It remains on the same distance and surface (mile and a quarter
all-weather) and may serve as a prep race for contests in the Middle East
The distance of the Grand Prix du Département has been reduced to just under 11 furlongs from 12 and a half furlongs
in a bid to attract a greater number of runners while also serving as a possible prep for the Group 3 Prix Exbury run three weeks later
goes back to grass and the distance of seven and a half furlongs
The race will take place on the last Sunday of the meeting
This date brings it closer to the first important races of the season for three-year-olds at Group 3 level
The Prix Policeman also undergoes a change and will be run on Saturday
The race could therefore be a springboard to the first Listed races for three-year-olds at Saint-Cloud
There is also a bonus series for a sprint/mile division and intermediate/classic division
with €40 000 to the owners of the two horses who win most points – €30 000 to the winner and €10 000 to the runner-up
Six Listed races run over the winter on the all-weather are part of this challenge
taking place across Deauville and Cagnes-sur-Mer between November and February

The winter meeting of the Côte d’Azur racecourse will be a Princely one: on the 25th of February
the same day as the first stage of the Gallop Challenge
the first French “Charity Mile” horse race will be launched with Princess Charlene of Monaco
The idea originally came from Princess Charlene’s father
who organizes the“Charity Mile” horse race in South Africa
each horse will run for a different charity
and prizes will be paid to the charities that finish the race first
The total amount raised could be $300,000 for animal charities
Princess Charlene’s father is a horse owner
and the Charity Mile already exists in South Africa,” said François Forcioli-Conti
president of the Racecourse Society of Azur
Princess Charlene and her foundation were among the main sponsors of the Charity Mile horse race at the end of October in South Africa
the Princess also took part in a charity swimming mile a few years ago in this country
The Cagnes-sur-Mer charity run on the 25th of February will be called “Prix de la Princesse de Monaco – Charity Mile”
“It will be a media event with prominent personalities
who will help give the event all the relief it deserves,” specified François Forcioli-Conti
The total racing fund will be 50 000 euros which will be shared between the organizations in different proportions according to the final position of each horse
There are organizations that will benefit from the race: Fondation Princesse Charlène de Monaco
the winter meeting proposed about sixty events until the 17th of March

Cagnes-sur-Mer provides picture-perfect winter backdrops of the Mediterranean and a six-week meeting that features plenty of noteworthy names among the jockey and trainer ranks
The left-handed oval course plays host to a mixed economy of Polytrack and turf racing
with the all-weather layout sited outside of the grass
Both boast broad fair turns and long straights – runners over seven and a half furlongs on turf and a mile on the all-weather need navigate only one turn – so this is not a course where too many hard-luck stories can be recounted
With the major Grand Prix de la Riviera meeting taking place on Sunday
all races bar the Prix de Vichy (12.45) on Saturday are on the Polytrack
Fewer of the major Chantilly trainers take a team down to Cagnes than was the case in the past
and in terms of the sport's biggest names
Jean-Claude Rouget and his Pau neighbour Francois Rohaut are the ones that will stand out to British and Irish punters
Rouget has an annual intake of well over 100 yearlings and will often take some of the more backward types that fail to make the course at two to Cagnes for their early three-year-old maidens and conditions races
Punters rarely let them go unbacked first up – especially if Christophe Soumillon is riding – but there can often be some value in taking a view on such horses when they step out of maiden company
who cost €160,000 as a yearling and created a really good impression when winning here on debut last month
faces some talented rivals in the Prix de Vichy
with Good Complicity and Kanuka both having earned black-type at two
It will be fascinating to see how the market judges Etoile
but it would not be a big surprise to see her progress well beyond this level in the future
Frederick Rossi is the local most feared by visiting trainers and he and nephew Charley have adapted well to the loss of Jean-Claude Seroul's horses to Jerome Reynier and Jean-Pierre Gauvin – two more names to note
Most of the leading riders bar Soumillon will be present over the weekend and it is Maxime Guyon who has made the fastest start
Guyon's successes at Cagnes have come in bundles and
after registering a double at three meetings since the middle of January
the 29-year-old knocked in another three winners on Wednesday
while Pierre-Charles Boudot rides four and Cristian Demuro – who has also got off to a good start after a fruitful spell in Japan before Christmas – has three chances to advance his score for the season
This time last year Mickaelle Michel was making hay with her double allowance
and the leading woman at the meeting this season so far has been Coralie Pacaut
The Prix du Vieux Bourg (1.17) brings together a number of horses who have competed at a much higher level
who won the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and Prix Foy in 2016 and has contested two Arcs
he failed to make an impact in three starts Stateside for Chad Brown and is perhaps best watched on his first start back in France for Fabrice Vermeulen
Fellow seven-year-old Zafiro has a Group 3 victory in the back catalogue but it might be that the veteran of the entire field
still has the legs on all of them at the age of eight

The European ‘all-weather’ racing scene has come a long way since racing on an artificial (non-turf) surface was first introduced in the UK at Lingfield Park in 1989
‘all-weather’ racing accounts for 23% of the French racing programme; and in the UK
racing has recently benefited from a major ‘all-weather’ prize money boost
‘All-weather’ racing is enhancing the opportunities for those connections wishing to keep horses in training across Europe over the winter months
But what are opportunities like on a country by country basis
Which countries are investing in ‘all-weather’ racing
While trotting is still the main racing sphere by some way in France – and all their racing is on dirt tracks – all-weather in France has been gathering momentum for over a decade now
Of roughly 5,000 races run in France in 2021
1,149 were staged on an all-weather surface
thus comprising some 23% of the race program.
Prestigious tracks such as Deauville and Chantilly have all-weather circuits; in total there are seven all-weather tracks in the country: Deauville
where usually the whole raceday will take place on one surface
French tracks have mixed cards and use the all-weather (all with a Polytrack surface) in summer also
it also takes pressure off the grass tracks
with rising temperatures in southern Europe providing new challenges in turf maintenance
French racing has eight Listed races run on its all-weather surfaces
A review to enhance the Black-type programme is on the way
French tracks are part of the All-Weather Championships programme to qualify for the finals on Good Friday in the UK – something French raiders did to good effect in 2022.
French racing receives the majority of its income – read prize money – from its betting turnover
as the PMU (the French Tote) has a monopoly on betting
The rise in all-weather racing has naturally seen a rise in betting turnover in this sphere – roughly 18% of all PMU-flat races are run on the all-weather circuit
Recent results suggest that the betting public is gradually switching from traditional jump-races to all-weather racing.
all-weather racing also caters well for a new type of owner
With syndicates still very scarce in France
a new type of ‘middle class’ owner has been emerging over the last couple of years – much needed new blood
but a type of owner that relies on a more regular income through prize money.
It's Year 10 since the creation of Arena Racing Company (ARC) backed All-Weather Championships
and racing on this surface does continue to increase in volume. Six racecourses in Britain stage all-weather racing
Wolverhampton); roughly one fifth of all flat races are now on a synthetic surface.
Huge investments have been made by the operator ARC across their four all-weather racecourses to improve the surface
With Southwell being the latest course to convert to a Tapeta surface (from Fibresand)
managing director of ARC’s Racing Division says that “changing the surface
was the right thing to do and the feedback from trainers and owners has been very positive so far.”
The creation of the All-Weather Championships 10 years ago can only be viewed as a major success story; the series now incorporates races from Ireland
as well as the enhanced Fast-Track-Qualifying system.
The switch of Finals day from Lingfield to Newcastle two years ago was followed by the creation of “All-Weather Vase Day” at Lingfield Park last year
A day that traditionally saw no racing at all now has two high-profile all-weather meetings taking place – a definite illustration of the rise of racing on this surface
Along with geographically diverse racing in the north and the south
All-Weather Vase Day naturally comes with added prize money
the whole raceday is worth around £390,000.
but at least three runs are needed akin to Finals Day
thus creating additional incentive to run on the all-weather. Even the quickest of glances at any given fixture list on the all-weather does reveal the extent to which these races are contested now; with even the choicest-bred horses from big yards coming under starters orders.
While headline names to race synthetic surface will forever include the mighty Enable and Stradivarius
Godolphin recently raced a half-brother to Guineas hero Coroebus to name just one
Tracks learn about the adaptability of the surface all the time
with the recent extreme temperatures providing a new challenge
there wouldn’t have been any racing in the recent cold snap,” remarks Mark Spincer
2022 saw two ARC initiatives to increase the quality of racing their tracks
one of those aimed specifically for (winter) all-weather racing
Southwell and Wolverhampton announced a further bonus of over £1,000,000 not just added to prize money
but to reward connections of the most consistent performers during the winter months.
some eagle-eyed trainers have already seen the chance to bag a bonus
of course we would love to attract more horses and their connections to our four all-weather tracks
but all-weather racing during this period has a wide fan base both domestically and abroad,” concludes Spincer
Coinciding with the exact timeframe of the All-Weather Championships
the bonus aims to reward consistency in given periods
Points scored go towards a “Horse of the Month” prize with rising extra money paid out from February onwards as well as £700,000 in bonuses for the horses with the most points at the end of the season
The scheme clearly aims to enhance field sizes
jockeys as well as stable staff monetary reasons to race on at ARC tracks.
Germany's all-weather racing scene was quite vibrant at the end of the last century
but it has been in steady decline for some time now.
Neuss racecourse closed its doors for the last time
and along with 144 years of turf racing went the second of the all-weather tracks.
Winter racing is now taking place at Dortmund racecourse only
Dortmund has a grass and an all-weather track
thus providing racing literally all year round.
Germany does not have any tracks with an artificial surface
The surface has not been renewed for some time now and has a huge kickback.
Racing takes place on roughly 14-day intervals
at time of writing eight meetings are planned this winter
Races are part of the French PMU funding and receive other subsidiaries
the quality being no better than class 3 handicaps – Germany's second lowest class
with some sellers thrown in for good measure.
Prize money is at basic level for these types of races
meaning total purses per race do not exceed €5.500
all-weather racing in Germany caters for the very base level of the sport
with major trainers and owners very rarely venturing into this sphere
Racing on the sand does count towards the Trainer and Jockey Championships in Germany
and this might lure the odd runner from the bigger stables
Plans for a second track with a synthetic surface have been mulled over by Deutscher Galopp for some time
but along with the general dire financial situation of racing in Germany
it remains only a very distant possibility at the moment.
All-weather racing finally reached Ireland in 2007 with the remodelling and re-opening of Dundalk Stadium
It’s the only track in Europe to combine horses and dog-racing and judging by online reviews
This has been a huge success with fun-loving Dubliners.
with at least once a week racing – mainly on a Friday night with floodlight and dog-racing following
Racing on the Polytrack continues sporadically throughout the year.
While the quality of handicaps is clearly not premium class
the track does stage a fair share of quite decent 2yo and 3yo maiden races
and these are contested by even the biggest yards in the country
Dundalk stages two Gp.3 and three Listed races
Plans for the second Irish all-weather track have been developing for a number of years now
with planning permission for a new track at Tipperary expected to go ahead in early 2023.
This clearly points to an ever-increasing demand to stage flat racing all year round
largely independent from weather influences
many races on Dundalk's cards continue to be oversubscribed and operate with reserves – a further pointer to huge demand.
Smaller yards definitely target horses for Dundalk races and have owners who buy horses for this sphere
While larger yards may pick and choose their races at Dundalk
smaller trainers rely on the extra income to keep the yard going through the long winter months.
As jump-racing starts losing its tag of catering for the ‘small man,’ the domination of just a few trainers and owners is becoming more and more blatant by the year
All-weather racing gives a different type of trainer and owner a new lease of racing life.
With added entertainment around the product
Dundalk has created a largely vibrant scene; being in a prime spot no doubt helps
but all-weather racing with regular consistency is clearly a success story in Irish racing.
Storms and cold temperatures combined yesterday (April 22) in the south of France
bringing rare hail to the French Riviera - turning several towns and beaches white.

temperatures in Nice and the surrounding area were 4.4C
the lowest in all of France at that time.

Renoir bought the house in 1896, six years after marrying his mistress and model Aline Charigot, who was born in the village nestled among champagne vineyards on a tributary of the Seine. Chronic rheumatism forced his move a decade later to Cagnes-sur-Mer on the Riviera coast where he built a villa (now also a Renoir museum). But he continued to spend his summers in Essoyes until his death in 1919 and he is buried in the local cemetery along with Aline and their three children.
As well as the house, the museum includes the studio that Renoir built at the bottom of the garden. The studio opened to the public 20 years ago under the aegis of the non-profit organisation the Association Renoir; it was bought separately by the village a decade ago and houses a slideshow, sculptures made towards the end Renoir’s life and memorabilia. It currently receives around 10,000 visitors a year—a figure Talbot expects to increase with the opening of the house and garden.
Three French institutions are loaning works by Renoir for the museum’s opening: a sculpture is coming from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer; the portrait Jeune femme au miroir (1919) is travelling from the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen; and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux is lending a landscape—Le Pont d’Essoyes.
The Musée d’Art Moderne in nearby Troyes is marking the opening of the house with an exhibition of around 40 of Renoir’s works and a dozen by friends and fellow Impressionists. Opening on 17 June, the show will also include six paintings from the private collection of Pablo Picasso, illustrating Renoir’s influence on the Spanish artist. “The idea is to put forward a new reading of Renoir,” says Daphné Castano, the show’s curator.

the medieval village of Haut-de-Cagnes and its 14th century castle
artists and their easels have flocked to these quaint little streets
blown away by their picturesque charm and inspired by the dreamy Mediterranean landscape before them
“It’s the brightness here in Cagnes
Impressionists in particular would come here from Western France,” explains Jean-Marc Nicolai
who believes the streets in Haut-de-Cagnes and the artistic soul of this medieval village no longer hold any secrets
Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted here during the final twelve years of his life “despite suffering from the painful disease rheumatoid arthritis.” Sitting overlooking the deep blue Mediterranean waters
or under the shade of pines and olive trees
breathing in the sweet scent of orange blossom
Painting in the idyllic setting of the Collettes neighbourhood
the artist was able to “soon reconnect with his first love: impressionism.” Onto the canvas before him

this Sunday’s card at Cagnes-sur-Mer promises some high-class action with multiple listed and group races as the Hippodrome de Cote d’Azur hosts its final jumps meeting of the winter
I have been following the winter season at the southern track with extreme interest in recent weeks and although the ground conditions look extremely testing
I am sure I have found a few solid lines of form where we can invest some euro’s this weekend
I am particularly looking forward to my ‘Dark Horse’
he’s not quite the finished article and could be one that keeps improving here at Cagnes
The Group 3 Grand Prix de la Ville de Nice is the one that everybody wants to win at Cagnes and last year’s winner BERJOU looks well positioned for an attempt to retain his crown
The David Windrif trained seven-year-old was well on his way to a bloodless success in a preparation race for this event two weeks ago when a miscommunication between both Berjou and his regular partner Nicolas Gauffenic resulted in an unfortunate unseating at the second last with the race in safe keeping
With Gauffenic subsequently injured in that incident
it is now Nathalie Desoutter who takes over the reins on Berjou
He has been in solid form throughout the season and shows a particular fondness for the track at Cagnes-Sur-Mer
He is the class horse of the race and if he runs up to his official mark here then a second success in this race is likely
provided the new partnership remains intact
A horse that should be in everyone’s tracker! GOLD TWEET has always shown plenty of ability since his win on his hurdles debut last May
The Gabriel Leender’s trained four-year-old was possibly too immature in the immediate aftermath of that debut success and was well held in some black-type events around Auteuil
Looking a more furnished gelding this winter and having always been a very efficient jumper
Leender’s decided to make the switch to the larger obstacles with Gold Tweet on Christmas Day
Gold Tweet looked like a seasoned pro and went on to win on the bridle on his chase debut
Training sensation Leender’s (who for the first time trained over 100 winners in 2020) has always held the gelding in high regard and he could make it three form three at the track in this Listed novice’s chase
The winter season at Cagnes-Sur-Mer has been quite fruitful one for BRIC who has consistently been in the frame since his easy win in a handicap on December 4th
The gelding’s new pilot Maxime Lefebvre rides this track at Cagnes better than most and I would be very surprised if Bric doesn’t score again here
Bric goes unpenalised for two second-placed defeats in premier handicaps on his previous two starts and connections can exploit his unchanged mark here
he hasn’t finished progressing yet and Bric could easily string a series of victories together at this level and may well be better over a fence in time
I will certainly be having a few €’s on Bric this weekend and a small stakes treble on BERJOU
GOLD TWEET and BRIC may just round off an excellent winter meeting at Cagnes-Sur-Mer

Jockey Johnny Charron was banned for 15 days by stewards at Cagnes-sur-Mer on Friday after producing an extraordinary ride in which he asked for next to no effort in the closing stages and was beaten in the final strides
Charron's performance on 11-2 shot Mansionsa left trainer Gabriel Leenders furious
with him telling stewards his horse would have won if the rider had made an effort and that he "deeply regretted this attitude towards punters and the entourage of the horse"
Mansionsa looked set for victory after jumping the final hurdle at the track on the French Riveria
an experienced rider with a string of notable successes to his name
After looking across three times to check on his rivals
Charron still appeared not to view his gaining opponents as a danger
with the rider resorting to only nudging out Mansionsa even as Bric passed him mere metres from the finish to win
telling them he felt the mare had a breathing problem after the final flight and "feeling that he had no more resources
he had applied himself to the extent he could until he passed the finish pole"
Watch: Cagnes-sur-Mer jockey slammed after producing 'worst ride of all time'
Leenders was deeply sceptical of the explanation
and said to the stewards that "very clearly the mare should have won this race if the jockey had been more energetic"
The trainer on Twitter apologised for the ride
and when contacted by the Racing Post said: "I don't know why my jockey did that
win and today I thought we were going to have an easy win
I'm very sorry for the bettors and the owners."
Asked if Charron had thought there was another circuit to go in the race
This mare has had a lot of problems and she was right for today and she could have won today
I don't know how she will be and if she can win as she has had problems

Fontwell fiasco as seventh-home is awarded race after mass disqualifications
Leenders added that Charron had not apologised to him for the ride and that he is not a regular rider for the stable

not being satisfied by the explanations of the jockey [the stewards] sanctioned him with a ban on riding for a period of 15 days."
