It is therefore absolutely amazing to know that Calais Campbell
after nine years with the team and after 8 years combined of stints with the Jaguars
has returned to Arizona to play on the team that drafted him in the 2nd round (#50 overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft
Calais Campbell explains to Jon Gruden and The Draft Show company how “sweet” it is to return to the team that drafted him and —- not simply
after playing 17 seasons —- to sign a one-day contract so that he could retire a Cardinal —- no
what made it sweet for Calais was having the chance to play again in Arizona

How amazing is it for Cardinals fans and players to be able to have one member from their lone Super Bowl team on this year’s team
playing one of the NFL’s most grueling positions
Calais Campbell’s Year to Year PFF Overall Grades:
I have always maintained that Calais Campbell was (and is!) the most ideal proto-typical 34 DE the Cardinals have ever drafted
the Cardinals’ 34 defense has never been the same since he left the team in 2017
occasionally you can line him up in a 2-point stance to wreak havoc in the A gap or rush him like a galloping giraffe off the edge
Opposing QBs will tell you; Calais Campbell takes the romance out of the quick-slant pass
Opposing kickers will tell you: Calais Campbell can take the romance out of a mere chip shot field goal
Note: CC’s 9 blocked FGs currently makes him the most prolific active FG blocker in the NFL
Talk about players who make everyone around them better
Over the course of his 9 seasons with the Cardinals
here is a lineup of arguably his most talented teammates:
Proof that Calais Campbell helps to make players around him better
Is a mere coincidence that he was a key cog during the two most impressive stretches in the history of the Arizona Cardinals
both amidst Ken Whisenhunt’s and Bruce Arians’ heydays
I believe that of any of the Arizona Cardinals draftees who have played for the Cardinals for more than 5 years
Calais Campbells’ teams have garnered the highest regular season winning percentage in Arizona Cardinals’ team history at 78-64-1
along with teammate and fellow long-term Cardinals’ draftee
Calais’s teams had most successful playoff record stretch in franchise history at 5-4

Six-time Pro-Bowl defensive lineman Calais Campbell has finalized a one-year deal to return to the Arizona Cardinals for his 18th NFL season
The one-year deal is for $5.5 million and has a maximum value of $7.5 million
He's not expected to start but will have certain packages designed to get him on the field
He'll also add a veteran presence to not just a defensive line room but a locker room that's looking to take the next step and make a playoff push this coming season
"What a story it would be!" Campbell wrote on his Instagram account after the deal was announced. "Started my career with a bang. Now it's time to finish it with a bang back home where it first began!"

Campbell signed with the Miami Dolphins late in the 2024 offseason
joining the team just before training camp
He immediately made an impact as a leader on a team many believed had Super Bowl aspirations
While the Dolphins underwhelmed on the field for much of the 2024 season
Campbell shined and recorded his highest pass rush win rate since 2019
He finished third on the team with five sacks and second on the team with 12 tackles for a loss
He led all defensive linemen with a 46% run stop win rate
Campbell was eventually released and was not cited
He played in that day's game against the Jaguars
recording a tackle for a loss on the first play from scrimmage
Campbell was noncommittal about his career plans when asked after the 2024 regular-season finale
saying he needed to give himself time to rest and discuss the matter with his family
He added that his performance this past season would likely impact his decision moving forward
Selected to six Pro Bowls and one first-team All-Pro nod (2017), Campbell has 110.5 sacks in 17 seasons. In addition to the Cardinals and Dolphins, Campbell has played for the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons in his career

Miami Dolphins defensive end Calais Campbell bulldozes New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers on a powerful sack
As he enters his 18th professional season, Calais Campbell is flirting with two decades spent in the NFL
It's only right he spends his age-39 season with the team that made him a second-round pick way back in 2008
Campbell is back with the Arizona Cardinals
the club that employed him for his first nine NFL campaigns before he left for an opportunity to make a difference with a contender in Jacksonville in 2017
earning two Pro Bowl nods and two second-team All-Pro honors in his final three seasons with Arizona before departing
beginning a journey that has taken him to Jacksonville
Campbell chased Super Bowls (and fell painfully short with the Jaguars and Ravens)
latched onto a Falcons team in need of a veteran
and completed a homecoming by joining the Dolphins
returning to where he spent his college years at the University of Miami
His latest chapter makes for yet another homecoming
that's for sure," Campbell said of returning to Arizona
this is the team that believed in me and gave me the opportunity to live out my dream and
here we are all these years later and they believe in me
still giving me the opportunity about my dream
"I'm one of those guys that love this game so much
I kind of have to wake up and pinch myself like
and I feel like the value I could bring is gonna make a big difference
I'll roll up my sleeves and get my hands dirty and do the best I can."
If he's proved anything over the last few seasons
it's that Father Time is struggling to catch him
Campbell has logged 17 sacks combined over the last three years
piling up 144 tackles and 26 tackles for loss in that span
He's still the mountainous man who strikes fear in the hearts of opposing quarterbacks and is liable to blow up a play on a given snap
But make no mistake: Campbell isn't superhuman
When asked if he felt as if he was entering his 18th year in the NFL
I wasn't coming off the field other than a drive or two
Campbell spent Thursday soaking in his new (and familiar) reality
"I try to stay present and not really think about things that could happen
but this place always had a place in my heart," he said
It's a long time to be anywhere -- that's a career by itself
and I didn't really start thinking about coming back
like really let myself think about that until last year
they were one of the teams that tried to trade for me
'That would be cool to go back to Arizona.'
talking about all the different possibilities and stuff this one just kept coming up

CALAIS — A Maine Border city has found itself on the front lines of The United States’ trade war with Canada
many downtown shop owners can see the banks of the Canadian town of Saint Stephen from their storefront windows — less than half a mile away
following President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on certain Canadian imports
local businesses said many Canadians are no longer making the trip across the border
“Calais is like a ghost town now without the Canadians,” said Tina Moholland
“We are down approximately 61% in package customers and sales
It’s almost three-quarters of what it was.”
According to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Data
there were approximately 30,000 fewer travelers crossing into Maine from Canada in February compared to the same time last year
everything has just gone downhill since the tariffs have been put on,” said Moholland
City officials said that what’s equally concerning is the emotional fallout from the tariffs
we see them as our friends and neighbors,” said Jim Porter
And some are worried that the city’s summer tourism season will take a hit if Trump follows through on imposing more tariffs on Canada on April 2
“The restaurants and everything are all dependent on the tourists,” said Dawn Kinney
volunteer at the Calais Community Thrift Shop
Canadians make up 5% of the state’s annual visitation
“We are naturally concerned about anything that may deter Canadian visitors from coming to Maine
the impacts of which would be felt throughout the state,” Director of Maine Office of Tourism Carolanne Ouellette said in a statement
“We understand that any reduction in visitation from Canadians will affect regions and businesses differently
with some areas impacted more negatively than others.”
Calais locals said they hope their relationship with Saint Stephen can survive the national strain
The bridge is just another road to us,” said Moholland
We’re hoping there’s no long-term effects.”
Susan Collins has also introduced legislation to boost security at the Northern Border
“Our border security policies must address the unique challenges along the U.S.-Canada border
remote areas make enforcement difficult,” said Collins
“By improving data collection and oversight of threats and enforcement efforts
this bipartisan bill would strengthen security
and help to ensure we have the resources needed to protect our northern border effectively.”
Collins introduced the legislation along with Maggie Hassan (D-NH)

Calais Campbell is headed back for his 18th season -- and headed back to where it all began
$5.5 million deal worth up to $7.5 million
NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Tuesday
The Cardinals announced the single-year pact
officially bringing Campbell back to the club that drafted him in 2008
The signing also concludes discussion on whether Campbell
owner of six Pro Bowl selections and 110.5 sacks
he's heading back west to Arizona after a single season with the Miami Dolphins
having missed much of his rookie campaign due to injury and should also be able to learn plenty from the venerable Campbell
Campbell is continuing on a whirlwind tour as of late
His career began with the Cardinals (2008-2016; two Pro Bowls) and carried on with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2017-2019; three Pro Bowls)
Baltimore Ravens (2020-2022; one Pro Bowl) and Atlanta Falcons (2023) prior to last year's last dance with the Dolphins
Having contemplated retirement prior to previous seasons
is likely to contemplate it again around this time next year
a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's All-2010s Team
was the 2019 Walter Payton Man of the Year and the 2024 NFL Players Association Alan Page Community Award winner
Campbell has played 261 games (242 starts) and has been a model of durability
never having missed more than four games in a campaign
18 forced fumbles and 13 fumble recoveries
Campbell was taken in the 2008 NFL Draft's second round by the Cardinals
His rookie campaign saw Arizona advance to the Super Bowl
a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in which Campbell recorded two tackles
Campbell went without a start or a sack as a rookie
but it was hardly a sign of things to come
Campbell became a fixture in the Cardinals' starting lineup over the next eight seasons
which ranks fourth all time for the franchise
Now he's returned to play under head coach Jonathan Gannon
who's just three years older than him at 41
He didn't miss a game in either of his last two seasons
with his 2024 campaign in Miami seeing him post 52 tackles and five sacks
often proving to be the highlight of a downtrodden Dolphins D
The Dolphins were reportedly open to releasing Campbell late last season to give him an opportunity to catch on with a contender
carried on until Week 18 and he stayed put in South Beach

Dolphins-Jets Week 18 Preview | Seize The Season presented by Caesars-Sportsbook
At 38 years old, Calais Campbell knows the end of his NFL career is closing in
The 17-year stalwart Miami Dolphins defensive lineman is bracing that his final game could be Sunday against the New York Jets
"That definitely is going to be the thought process," Campbell said Thursday of possibly retiring after the season, per the South Florida Sun Sentinel
Regardless of whether the Dolphins make the playoffs
like he has each of the past several seasons
will evaluate his future after his campaign ends
"I will say that I've felt that way before
so this is not my first time feeling that way," Campbell said
"So it doesn't mean I'm definitely going to retire
Campbell made the Super Bowl with the Cardinals in his rookie season in 2008 but failed to return to the big dance the past 16 seasons
our first year together," said Miami defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver
who was also Campbell's defensive line coach in Baltimore
"Just to get in and to get a ticket to the dance is what we're looking for
And if anybody can help push a team past whatever its limits may be
So I'd give anything for that (opportunity)."
Campbell said that he doesn't want teammates scoreboard-watching on Sunday
there will be some sliver of a silver lining to finish with a 9-8 record after the dismal start to the season
there's only one team that leaves the year happy
The team that goes and loses is just as unhappy as the teams that don't make it
"But there is some solace in knowing that at least you had a winning record
something to build off of for the people who are going to be here next year
The question Campbell will ask himself either Sunday night or in the coming weeks is whether he's done his part for the final time in the NFL
but when it comes to sports that isn't necessarily true
But Karlos Dansby did it (twice!) and that first time especially
Yet, to have Calais Campbell come back to potentially wrap up his career is a storybook kind of ending
a guy still has to be able to play to have this make sense
despite going into Year 18 and about to turn 39
he had production that a guy 15 years his junior would love to have on the defensive line
(It should be noted there are a fair number of Dolphins fans and media lamenting that Miami let Campbell leave.)
When the Jaguars traded Campbell for a fifth-round pick to the Ravens in 2020
fans asked why the Cardinals couldn't/wouldn't make that deal
When Campbell left Baltimore as a free agent and signed with the Falcons
I was asked why didn't the Cardinals sign him
When he was leaving Atlanta and landed with the Dolphins
There's no way to fully understand the benefit Campbell -- the 2019 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year and one of the best humans you'll meet -- will bring to the locker room
but when that guy can still contribute impactfully
He's one of those guys if you spilt his career into two careers -- the first nine years with the Cardinals
the eight seasons since -- they both would be amazing careers to stand on
There are players you get to know as a reporter
Campbell is one of those guys who everyone he gets to know
The intensity on it (laughable that one knock coming out of college was that he didn't have a motor
Calais coming home sure feels like a happy ending
The Cardinals have been working on building their defensive line all offseason and are adding the piece that not only will invigorate the unit but also the fan base
who spent the first nine years of his career in Arizona after the Cardinals drafted him in the second round in 2008
has agreed to a one-year deal to return to the desert on Tuesday

The contract is reportedly worth $5.5 million

the durable Campbell has missed only 15 games

42 pass deflections and eight forced fumbles in 138 games in Arizona
He made the Pro Bowl his last three seasons with the Cardinals
with the Cardinals mistakenly thinking Robert Nkemdiche would be able to fill his role
Campbell made the Pro Bowl all three seasons with Jacksonville — including a first-team All-Pro — before playing with Baltimore for three seasons (with another Pro Bowl) ahead of his move to Atlanta
Campbell had five sacks and 12 tackles for loss playing 58 percent of the defensive snaps - work that despite his age made him a valuable addition to Nick Rallis' defense

separated by the last eight elsewhere – he thanked owner Michael Bidwill for still believing in him
This moment was not something he thought he'd reach
Despite years of a fanbase clamoring for him to return (and sometimes telling him to his face when he was in town)
Campbell said he never really entertained the idea of a Cardinals Tenure Part II until the 2024 trade deadline
The Cardinals were one of the teams that wanted to trade for Campbell
He ultimately told the Dolphins he wanted to stay and help their flagging postseason hopes
but he couldn't shake the idea of returning
'It would be kind of cool to go back to Arizona,'" Campbell said
Campbell generated interest despite the fact he will turn 39 in September
But much of his family moved to the Valley when Campbell first played here
and have remained while he moved around the league
three in Baltimore and one each in Atlanta and Miami
most long past the expiration date he once thought he had
Nothing but love for the #BirdGang 🫶@CalaisCampbell pic.twitter.com/XvWxbL15A7
he wanted to play 15 seasons – what sound like an excellent career for a defensive lineman
"I am shocked I am still playing too," he said
Campbell had five sacks a season ago playing in a rotation
with excellent run defense grades from Pro Football Focus
(He also had a career-high special teams snaps
another value rarely seen from a veteran like him.)
with a defensive line that has Dalvin Tomlinson
I just can't play 75 plays a game," Campbell said
"The first time around (with the Cardinals) I wouldn't come off the field except for a drive or two
they'll still be good but you gotta be smart."
What he adds is much more for the $5 million in salary
He is a community giant – pun unintended despite his 6-foot-8 frame – that is beloved by the fanbase and past winner of the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year award
He also sees himself as a servant leader that can benefit not only Robinson and Stills in his room but other younger players on the roster
"They know I come with a lot of leadership capabilities and prestige that young guys respect," Campbell said
Year 18 could be Campbell's final one in the NFL
a beautiful bookend with his return to Arizona
He thought at the outset of 2024 that season was going to be his last
Maybe 2025 will prove to be the perfect ending
"I love the game so much and I'm still good at it
93 he has sported throughout his career – iconically with the Cardinals for those first nine seasons – is currently held by Jones
Campbell said he hadn't yet had a conversation with Jones about the number
although the two do have a relationship after training together previously
The voluntary workouts for players begin April 22
and there is time to figure out uniform numbers
and to mesh what he learns about the 2025 Cardinals with what he remembers from his nine years previous

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport details an almost trade of Miami Dolphins defensive end Calais Campbell at deadline
Prior to the NFL trade deadline on Nov
hoping to solidify their defensive front with a familiar face
Calais Campbell was the target
At various points over a hectic two days before the deadline
sources involved believed a deal was getting done and Campbell would return to Baltimore
That is until Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel stepped in
believing that Campbell was too valuable to lose
McDaniel told Campbell this to his face in a meeting
McDaniel couldn't get behind dealing one of their team leaders and defensive stalwarts
even if it would clear some money and bring back a 2026 fifth-rounder for a team that was then 2-6 and without a lot of hope for a turnaround
McDaniel valued the leadership and kept the faith in his team
Perhaps there was a chance the Dolphins could turn it around
If there was something to play for in late November and December
The Dolphins have since won two contests in a row to claw back to 4-6. Heading into today’s home game against the 3-8 Patriots
they have a chance to draw a game within .500
The 2019 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award winner's play is a reason why
Miami is home for Campbell, one reason why he took much less money to eventually sign a one-year, $2 million deal with the Dolphins. A trade to the Ravens, who sit second in the AFC North and have Super Bowl aspirations
would have returned him to where he thrived from 2020-22
earning a Pro Bowl nod in his first season there
sources say Campbell even believed he would be dealt
he stayed in Miami and led the charge back
The 38-year-old Campbell made headlines in the Dolphins' Week 10 win over the Los Angeles Rams
collecting a sack and helping lead a four-sack effort -- then shooting hoops as a celebration
"For us to go where we want to go," Campbell said after the game
He also had a sack in Miami's win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 11
While it won't be an easy road to make a playoff push
there are four combined games against the Patriots
might have played his last down in San Francisco

More than half of the people received by MSF have been victims of violence in their migration journey
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been providing medical
and social support to unaccompanied minors in transit in a day center in Calais
Calais has been a central point of transit for people on the move for decades, particularly for those seeking to reach the United Kingdom. There, hundreds of young people have shared with the MSF team painful stories about their migration journeys and a violent reception in France.
Sometimes they check that there are no cameras
and they take us to places out of sight to beat us up
young people find a place where they can be listened to and feel welcomed
a place where the bond of trust created by the team allows them to speak freely.
“Sometimes they check that there are no cameras
and they take us to places out of sight to beat us up,” said Ahmed*
a 15-year-old Sudanese boy who was admitted to the MSF center in February “The last time this happened to me
The police took us to a van and beat us with truncheons
I was beaten so badly that I was bleeding.” When offered the chance to file a complaint
he refused for fear of endangering himself and the possible repercussions if he were to encounter the same police officers again
“Young people who migrate alone experience exile and violence at a particular time in their development, that of adolescence,” explained Chloé Hannebouw, psychologist for MSF in Calais
“Exile also means experiencing or witnessing traumatic events and violence that often goes unpunished
It becomes difficult and dangerous to trust others.
Since the reopening of the MSF project in Calais in April 2023
82 percent of people seen for medical consultations and questioned about violence by MSF’s medical team have said they were subjected to ill-treatment
young people can talk about terrible experiences of violence
“Some young people also tend to compare the violence they suffered in Libya with the complicated living conditions in Calais
This comparison often leads them to minimize the harshness of their current situation in view of the extreme violence experienced over there.”
MSF psychologist have carried out 152 consultations with minors
either unaccompanied or accompanied by their families
Among the most frequent symptoms experienced by young patients are anxious rumination
and a feeling of powerlessness or inability to project themselves in the future
particularly when they have been through particularly traumatic experiences or extreme violence

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- The Miami Dolphins received legitimate offers for defensive tackle Calais Campbell
but both he and Campbell objected to any trade despite the team's underwhelming record at the time
The Dolphins nearly traded Campbell to the Baltimore Ravens for a fifth-round pick at the trade deadline
but McDaniel said he made it clear to general manager Chris Grier at the time about Campbell's importance
"It wasn't like it was Chris versus me," McDaniel said
"It was more that Chris looks at it the way I do
or we work together -- and I may or may not have thrown an adult temper tantrum
"The tricky thing about Chris' job is he has to look long term and short term at the same time
We rely on each other for things that I need to be on top of
and one of those is the locker room and what one individual does for an entire team
I think it speaks to Calais because that was a strong compensation for a guy that's -- he just passed the 30-year-old mark."
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said he "may or may not have thrown an adult temper tantrum" to keep the team from dealing veteran defensive tackle Calais Campbell at the trade deadline. Peter Joneleit/Icon SportswireThe Dolphins were 2-6 at the trade deadline
who has been productive in his first season with the team
consulted Campbell after receiving offers for him
and Campbell's preference was to remain in Miami
"It speaks to how he's playing," McDaniel said
Since the deadline, the Dolphins have won three consecutive games and are in the hunt for the AFC's seventh seed after a 34-15 victory against the New England Patriots on Sunday
Campbell is tied with Zach Sieler for the team lead with four sacks

His 40% run stop win rate this season ranks 11th best among all defensive linemen
while his 13% pass rush win rate as a defensive tackle is fifth best in the league entering Week 12
His teammates say his leadership has been invaluable
as Miami continues to rebound from its poor start
"There's no one's game I've come to respect more than Calais' up front on the D-line
the attitude and the mindset he brings every week -- it can't be matched
And that's the reason why he is who he is today and doing what he's doing at 17 years [in the league]."

but what did Defensive Coordinator Anthony Weaver focus on as areas he wants to see improvement
"I think our biggest issue is that we all want to make plays
sometimes you kind of leave your job left not to the standard we want it to be
So the message has been just let the plays come to you; do your job at an elite level and just make the plays you're supposed to make
We had a pretty tough meeting because he went through pretty much line by line situations
understand who was messing up on what play or caused the issues so we can get it fixed
that's probably the biggest issue you have on defense is (with) a big gain
you don't really know what happened on the field because you really can't go through that process
And then guys still trying to make up for it
still trying to do a little more because they had a little leakage instead of letting that one guy get it fixed
trusting the guys you have next to you to do their job and you do yours and be accountable."
Q: How much of – and it's not as if the run defense has been bad
it hasn't been at the standard set last year when teams averaged 3.8 per carry
and you have had obviously some tackles for loss
what's been primarily the problem from what you've seen on tape
but we like that challenge because we know we can handle it
but the extra 20% has been just biting us for a couple weeks
But a lot of it is just being on the same page
communicating and just playing together football
have a high standard and we obviously know that we can be a lot better
I think everybody knows we can be a lot better
other than that 49-yard run and a couple leakage yardage this game
We don't want to be OK most of the time and then have these runs that we're really beating ourselves
I mean if somebody just makes a play to make a play
but we can't have times where we beat ourselves
a lot of emphasis on – we asked for a different way of doing things so we can try to be a little better too at times
it really comes down to just win your matchup and being where you're supposed to be
being accountable and making the play you're supposed to make."
Q: You're obviously good at getting your hand up
You had a big one on Sunday that led to an interception
but what do you think gives you a knack for that – obviously
but do you think over 17 years you've picked up on some reads
"(laughter) I try to look at the quarterback's flight line
and trying to do little things that can help
but most of the time it's just instincts in the moment
I feel like there's a lot of times that I'm trying to bat the ball and I have no chance
but then sometimes you're in the middle of a rush and you just kind of got to feel
I do think that good things happen to those who play really hard and run to the ball
Now batting balls is a little different because you're going towards the quarterback or whatever
then I'm trying to affect him any way I can
so getting my hands up on balls is definitely something that comes natural to me
My man Zach (Sieler) got his hands up and got that ball
It makes it that much more sweet; when you get a hand on the ball
But when – not only when it's intercepted by a DB or something
Q: You played with QB Tyler Huntley going back to your years with Baltimore
What can people who haven't seen his game expect from him as a player if he does get that opportunity
we call him 'Snoop.' 'Snoop' (Tyler Huntley) is a guy who is going to be very prepared
I think he has good poise in the pocket and then he can create with his legs
which I think is something with the weapons we have at receiver and the way people have to guard us
when you can really make people pay with your legs
there's going to be some opportunities there
And I think that's a place where we can really exploit going forward – or at least if they have to adjust and account for his running ability as well
it should give us some more opportunities to hit some bigger throws."
Q: What are your impressions of QB Will Levis or any of the Titans offensive linemen you might have to face
"They're one of the best running teams that we're going to face
which is something that we've been putting a big emphasis on the last couple of weeks and we still haven't really had that complete game from a front seven stopping the run
and Will Levis' ability to scramble and keep plays alive makes it even more hard
They have really good backs who can hit the home run hits and just make you pay if you catch a gap
So this is going to be a very big game on being disciplined
They're also a 'desperate' team – take that with a grain of salt
just get this next win and everything goes back to normal
They're a team that wants to get a win real bad
so it's going to be a matchup of who wants it the most and who's willing to do what's required."
Q: Do you think you'll check out your Canes on Friday night
"(laughter) I always like watching my Canes

What we do know is the answer won't come until next March because that's when the league officially awards the compensatory picks
But projecting comp picks has been an annual exercise
and there were two different interpretations Friday
with OverTheCap.com saying the Dolphins would be getting that fourth-round comp pick for the loss of Jevon Holland and NFL.com saying the Dolphins would not be getting one
Compensatory picks are awarded to those teams that suffer a net loss of compensatory free agents the previous year and the key term there is "compensatory free agent." Those players
are UFAs who switch teams and fall among the top 35 percent of all league players in terms of average annual compensation
with postseason accolades and playing also factored
The Dolphins signed a dozen unrestricted free agent this offseason
but only four who figure to have a chance to become compensatory free agents — James Daniels
Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and Ifeatu Melifonwu — based on their average annual compensation
On the flip side, the Dolphins have lost three clear compensatory free agents in Holland, Calais Campbell, Robert Jones and most recently Emmanuel Ogbah signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars
The question for the Dolphins will be whether Westbrook-Ikhine and Melifonwu eventually will be compensatory free agents once the 2025 season is over and all the factors can be compiled because their annual average compensation of $3 million puts them right around the cut-off point
With Ogbah reportedly getting $3.25 million on his one-year contract with Jacksonville
he's more likely to end up qualifying as a compensatory free agent
The Dolphins also could wind up getting two third-round picks — one in 2026 and one in 2027 — if defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver lands a head-coaching position next offseason
had three compensatory picks in the just-completed 2025 draft — one each in the third
The Dolphins used the third- and fourth-rounders in the trade up to get guard Jonah Savaiinaea; they used the seventh-rounder on DT Zeek Biggers
This marked the first time since 2020 that the Dolphins were awarded a compensatory pick
who are given out on the basis on net compensatory free agent losses the previous years
The Dolphins also got a third-round compensatory pick for the first time since 2017 when they got one for the free agent departure the previous year of defensive end Olivier Vernon
who had signed with the New York Giants after the Dolphins placed but then rescinded the transition tag
the Dolphins selected Clemson cornerback Cordrea Tankersley
The Dolphins received two compensatory picks in 2020
The fourth-round selection was used in a trade-up to select guard Solomon Kindley from Georgia
while the seventh-round pick was traded to Seattle for a 2021 sixth-round pick that was sent to the Chicago Bears in a trade for tight end Adam Shaheen

Watch highlights from the Week 10 matchup between the Miami Dolphins and the Los Angeles Rams during the 2024 NFL season
The Miami Dolphins earned a massive win on Monday night, snapping a three-game skid to keep their postseason hopes afloat as the defense kept Sean McVay's Rams out of the end zone in a 23-15 victory in L.A
"When we're playing our best ball, we can still beat anybody," Campbell said, via the Associated Press
And obviously the margin for error is zero
The victory pushed Miami to a 3-6 record, second in the AFC East (behind the 8-2 Bills) and 10th in the conference. The muddled bottom of the AFC will keep several teams alive for the final wild-card spots
The 5-5 Denver Broncos currently hold the No
The Dolphins' schedule could set Mike McDaniel's club up for a run
Five of Miami's final eight games are against teams currently with three or fewer wins
very important game for our team just to be on the heels of three losses
and I think that's something that we can build upon moving forward," McDaniel said
Campbell helped spearhead the defensive effort early in the contest
Most players -- let alone trench-warfare defenders -- are on the couch at his age
Yet Campbell continues to be a disrupter week in and week out
the Dolphins hope they can keep riding upright down the stretch and keep their season alive
Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Calais Campbell (93) enter the field before an NFL football game against the New York Jets
(AP) — Calais Campbell doesn’t want to think too far ahead
The veteran defensive tackle knows he will suit up for the Miami Dolphins against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday
“I’m cherishing this moment,” Campbell said after practice Wednesday
“I feel like this team is so much better than how we’ve been playing.”
that teams would be willing to do that,” McDaniel said in November
my job is to speak on behalf of what’s the best thing for the 2024 Dolphins.”
Campbell said Wednesday that he and the Dolphins could have conversations about releasing him so he can join a playoff contender if Miami (6-8) is eliminated from the postseason soon
“Weeks back before the trade deadline and stuff
there was a small conversation that you really didn’t hope would ever even become a thing,” Campbell said
“And it was kind of like just something to talk about
but it’s definitely something you think about.”
the playoffs are a long shot for the Dolphins
It is still mathematically possible for Miami to earn its third straight postseason berth if it wins the remaining three games on its schedule and gets help with other teams losing
The Dolphins host San Francisco on Sunday then close the season at Cleveland and the New York Jets
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said Miami will need to move on from the disappointing loss against the Texans in which the offense turned the ball over four times
but he’s seen nothing in the locker room to suggest that the team has given up on the season
“I think what’s so cool is there’s so many guys that have played in the league for some time in this locker room,” Tagovailoa said
“to where they also understand the magnitude of ‘if I lay down,’ what that looks like
Campbell played for Baltimore from 2020-2022
He spent the first nine seasons of his 17-year career with Arizona
where he went to the Super Bowl and lost to Pittsburgh as a rookie in 2008
Campbell said he doesn’t “live with regret” when asked if he wished he would have joined a contending team back in November
“You just make a decision and you rock with it
I came here to the Dolphins with a year-long commitment to go out here and compete and try to make the playoffs
Campbell is third on the Dolphins with four sacks
five passes defensed and a forced fumble this season
Campbell said he has considered retirement
but hasn’t given much thought to the idea of returning for an 18th NFL season
he did not count out a potential return to Miami
He signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins back in June
I’ve had a great experience,” Campbell said
“I wish we won a few more ball games this year
but it’s definitely a great place to play football
Finishing the year strong and having a chance to make the playoffs would be sweet
If the time comes and I decide to play football again
this is definitely a place I love playing.”
Calais Campbell is again being linked to the Ravens
It was reported last November that the Ravens were set to acquire the six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle from Miami at the trade deadline
but Dolphins Head Coach Mike McDaniel nixed the deal
Now the Ravens are reportedly one of the teams pursuing Campbell in free agency
Campbell is mulling whether he wants to sign with the Ravens, Dolphins, or another team, according to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, who noted that retirement is also a possibility
McDaniel acknowledged at the NFL owners meetings Monday that Campbell
who played three seasons in Baltimore (2020-2022)
He had five sacks last season and 6.5 the year before in Atlanta
Campbell was Pro Football Focus' seventh-highest graded interior defender last season
playing in all 17 games the past two seasons and never appearing in fewer than 12 games in a season throughout his 17-year career
The retirement of nose tackle Michael Pierce this offseason has created a void on the defensive line and defensive end Brent Urban is still a free agent
which Head Coach John Harbaugh spoke about at the owners meetings
"We have to make sure we have a good solid defensive line," Harbaugh said
"The good news is the draft is really deep there
NFL.com’s Adam Rank listed his 10 favorite revenge games on the 2025 schedule
"The Ravens have gone on their annual quest to add wide receiver help for Lamar Jackson
who traded for him after Rashee Rice's season-ending injury
because the Chiefs didn't really target Hopkins an awful lot (59 targets
41 receptions and 437 yards in 10 regular-season games)
Hopkins to the Ravens can still draw a headline
and the 32-year-old did top 1,000 receiving yards with seven receiving TDs with the Titans in 2023
but it's been a while since Hopkins really put up some serious numbers
The days of D-Hop taking over games feel like they came and went eons ago
Maybe this tilt against his recent former team will motivate him."
1 seed in the playoffs in 2023 and lost to the Chiefs at home in the AFC title game
again in the 2024 playoffs – but unfortunately for them
it was because they lost to the Bills in the AFC Divisional Round before they could get a chance to face Patrick Mahomes and Co
Baltimore did win the teams' regular-season meeting last season
but I'm not sure how much that changed the tone of a series in which the Ravens have dropped three of the past five games (including playoffs)
And then there's this added wrinkle: Josh Allen just kept Lamar Jackson from claiming his second straight (and third total) MVP award
I get the feeling everyone is going to bring it for this one."
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell conducted an all-trade mock draft
He had the Ravens sending tight end Mark Andrews
and a fourth-round pick to the Los Angeles Chargers in exchange for guard Zion Johnson and the 22nd-overall pick
Johnson was selected 17th overall by the Chargers in 2022
but Barnwell said Johnson "hasn't lived up to expectations."
but Johnson might be equally as desirable given his youth and the recent positional importance of guards," Barnwell wrote
"The Ravens have lost multiple starting offensive linemen over the past few years
and they might like their chances with the 25-year-old Johnson."
Andrews is entering the final year of his contract, which has led to speculation about his future in Baltimore. However, Harbaugh said Monday that he expects the three-time Pro Bowler to remain with the Ravens
"I do fully expect him to be playing for us next year
He's just too good a player," Harbaugh said
In other draft-day trade speculation, Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport proposed a swap involving the Ravens that he believes is plausible
Davenport had the Ravens sending their first-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for the 32nd-overall pick and third- and fifth-round picks
Alabama guard Tyler Booker and Tennessee edge James Pearce Jr
have been linked to the Ravens in mock drafts
ESPN draft analyst Field Yates was asked which one he would choose if both were available when Baltimore is on the clock
Yates said Booker "makes a lot of sense," but he went with Pearce
who he acknowledged is a polarizing prospect
"We're talking about a 248-pounder who ran a 4.47 40
are you kidding me?" Yates said on ESPN's Mina Kimes' podcast
Some of the advanced metrics like James Pearce
He had a high edge pressure percentage last year
He had 7½ sacks last year; he had 9½ sacks the year prior
"This is not the kind of guy who I think is going to go teeth-to-teeth with a guard who's pulling and want to meet him there and make life miserable for that guard
Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon named each team's most underpaid player
"Linderbaum and Kyle Hamilton are both key Ravens who are underpaid as critical first-round picks from 2022," Gagnon wrote
"Both are 24 years old and already perennial Pro Bowlers
but we'll go with Lamar Jackson's steady center as he makes a little less ($3.3 million per year
Linderbaum and Hamilton are eligible for contract extensions
and both could reset the market at their positions

Former All-Pro defensive lineman Calais Campbell has agreed to a one-year deal to return to the Arizona Cardinals, the team announced Tuesday
It marks the 18th NFL campaign for Campbell
who will turn 39 years old on September 1 and is currently the NFL’s oldest non-quarterback
Campbell spent his first nine seasons with Arizona
His 56 1/2 sacks with the Cardinals over that span rank fourth-most all time in the franchise’s history
Campbell was part of both the Cardinals’ NFC Champion team during his 2008 rookie season and the franchise’s last playoff victory during the 2015 campaign
Campbell is on his fourth team in four years
Campbell was able to start all 17 games for the Dolphins and Falcons
He became the first defensive lineman at least 37 years old to start every game of a season in back-to-back years since Ted Washington in 2005 and 2006
Campbell ended his Dolphins tenure with five sacks for the third consecutive season
also finishing second on Miami’s roster in tackles for loss (12) and third in QB hits (12)
Arizona originally drafted Campbell in the second round (No
He was the sixth defensive end and the tenth defensive lineman off the board that year behind the likes of Chris Long (No
The six-time Pro Bowler is the NFL’s active leader in games started (242) and has compiled 917 tackles
63 pass breakups and 18 forced fumbles across 17 seasons
His last playoff appearance came during the 2022 season with the Baltimore Ravens

playCalais Campbell: Police treatment of Tyreek Hill 'unnecessary' (2:15)Calais Campbell shares account of how he
Tyreek Hill and Jonnu Smith were being detained before the Dolphins' Week 1 matchup
MIAMI -- Three days before the Miami Dolphins' 2024 season opener, a media scrum gathered around offensive lineman Terron Armstead
He fielded questions about sleep tracking and load management
where players sometimes take nights off to mitigate a nagging injury
He was asked if the practice would find its way to the NFL
He was then asked about teammate Calais Campbell -- the oldest active lineman in the NFL on either side of the ball -- and whether there are any similarities between how they prepare their bodies for game day
A wide grin broke out across the 33-year-old's face
I'm not in Calais' -- he's in another tier of veteran
It's true. In his 12th NFL season, Armstead was a junior at Cahokia High School in Illinois when Campbell was drafted 50th overall by the Arizona Cardinals after three seasons at the University of Miami in 2008
Campbell, now 38 and playing in his 17th NFL season, signed with the Dolphins this offseason. But as Miami prepares to host the Tennessee Titans on Monday night (7:30 p.m
Campbell's love for the game and production has been a silver lining for a team in need of one
He has made the most of his time on the field
despite playing the second-lowest percentage of defensive snaps of his career
and has played the fourth-most games of any defensive lineman in NFL history
Campbell says he has mulled retirement for the past four seasons or so
He has put significant effort into his preparation so
he would do so knowing he gave it everything he had
The retirement considerations never last long
Campbell loves the game and is still playing at a high level
then it'd be time to hang it up," Campbell said
I felt like towards the end of last year I was playing the best ball of the season."
On the next play, the 6-foot-8, 307-pound lineman shot into a gap in the Jags' line and brought down running back Travis Etienne for a 1-yard loss
It was an exciting start to a day that had been anything but for Campbell and the Dolphins
Hours before the game kicked off, wide receiver Tyreek Hill was pulled over just outside the Hard Rock Stadium grounds for speeding
and ultimately put in handcuffs after failing to comply when an officer asked him to roll down his window
After being told to back away from the situation
Miami-Dade Police Department officer Danny Torres put him in handcuffs and threatened to arrest him
The altercation was recorded by passersby and went viral on social media
who also dragged Hill out of his car and handcuffed him
was put on administrative duties within hours of the incident -- something Campbell said was "very much the way it should go."
It was an unforeseen scenario for a player who is known for his character
winning the Walter Payton Man of the Year award in 2019 -- an annual award
given to a player who has had "a significant positive impact on the community."
Campbell didn't want to dwell on the situation when speaking to reporters after the game
He said he stopped at the scene to try to de-escalate what he believed was "excessive force" by the officers involved
He said his dominant start to the game was not related to the events leading up to it
"It had nothing to do with that situation," Campbell said
I was just going out there giving everything I had
But I knew early in the game I could make a difference
Definitely the questions you have when you go into a season -- Year 17
And it felt pretty good to be able to make some big plays to get the game going."
His unwillingness to leave his teammate in a sensitive situation resonated within the Dolphins' building
It's an offshoot of the character Campbell
who was voted a captain in his first year in Miami
Coach Mike McDaniel was unnerved by the detention of Hill and Campbell but was proud of how his team stuck together in the moment
"It's what you hope your team is comprised of," McDaniel said
"Situations that you can't plan for sometimes give you the best window into where your team is at
I'm very proud that they see each other as teammates and hold that in regard the way they do
you are so interwoven into the story of their lives that you hope that teammates understand that we are extended family
"I was very happy that a guy in a situation like that didn't feel alone."
Calais Campbell started 2024 with a bang, sacking Trevor Lawrence in the season opener. Sam Navarro/Imagn ImagesTHE OLDEST DEFENSIVE lineman to play in the NFL is Jim Marshall, who, at 42 years old, played 16 games for the Minnesota Vikings in 1970
Campbell isn't necessarily chasing that record
Campbell recorded 56.5 sacks in his first nine seasons with the Cardinals
His production tailed off in his three seasons with the Ravens
but he responded with 6.5 sacks in his lone season with the Falcons in 2024
Campbell says there is no specific secret to his longevity
He says it simply begins with understanding the human body
I've done so many different things," he said
I feel like I became a biologist in terms of understanding the body a lot better
Campbell has noticed an increased interest in players taking care of their bodies over the past 10 years or so
He expects to see a significant number of them playing "dominant football" well into their 30s
It's crazy to think about the changes," he said
I don't think that information was just available back then
their mindset -- even the amount of plays you played was different
Falcons linebacker Arnold Ebiketie said he frequently "shadowed" Campbell during his pregame routine last season and tries to implement Campbell's routine to this day -- including an increased focus on hydration
Ebikietie said Campbell would often drink at least six large bottles of water each day
Miami offensive lineman Kendall Lamm said Campbell takes care of his body at all times
They think that when we're in the building
you got to do it when no eyes are on you."
McDaniel said the way Campbell works and prepares has an impact on his teammates
"His teammates that are 15 years younger than him have a hard time not finishing a drill
straining and having exuberance to come to work every day when they're watching him do that," McDaniel said
"I knew that he's an absolute freak in terms of being able to play that position for that long at such a high level
I didn't necessarily really think through the natural influence that on a day-to-day basis ..
I think he was in college when the iPod came out
That's pretty amazing that he's now executing jobs that guys were barely alive when he started executing that job and he's doing it alongside them."
He's not likely to see his workload dialed back for as long as he can handle it
Weaver wants Campbell in the game during critical moments
"You always want to make sure he's playing in the game where you can feel he can be most impactful," Weaver said
yet not have him sit around too long so he does start to get stiff
It kind of just depends on [how] the flow of the game is going
"But the one thing you do know is if it's a critical situation
there's a high likelihood that Calais Campbell is going to be in the game."
he is still playing nearly two decades into his career for one reason
"What I admire about him is his true love for the game
He loves this s--- for real," Armstead said
To have somebody that is that excited to play this game after so many years
but he still wants to come out and play this game

London
I don’t have the answers’British theatre has a new writing superstar
Catford-bred playwright Ryan Calais Cameron is a massive rising star
That’s not a subjective assessment: just take a look at the man’s diary
‘People used to call my agent and she’d say: Ryan isn’t free for 18 months,’ he says
can we get him signed up now for next year
So now we have to have deeper conversations about what I take on
because there are whole chunks of the next four
five years that are no longer my own.’
he’s not saying this to boast – in fact
it takes me the best part of our 45 minute chat to get him to explain how mad his life has become
things have gotten so serious that he has to leave London and its temptations to get on top of all the writing he’s agreed to.
‘I have a place at an apartment in Rotterdam overlooking the harbour,’ he explains
you've got really good food around the town
It means I can immerse myself in my writing
I just can’t do that if I’m easily accessible.’
Much of this work is for screen: he’s written for shows including Queenie and Boarders
and now things are really taking off for him
he’s developing two shows of his own with Netflix and Channel 4.
The reason this is happening for him can squarely be traced back to his 2021 play For Black Boys who have Considered Suicide when the Hue Gets Too Heavy
A sort of existential celebration of Black male vulnerability in which a group of young men spill their darkest secrets in hilarious
it opened at the tiny New Diorama Theatre and snowballed in popularity from there
with a stint at the Royal Court followed by two full runs in the West End
Today we’re meeting backstage at the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue to discuss its follow up, Retrograde
The virtual opposite of For Black Boys…
it’s a snappy 90-minute period thriller about a young Sidney Poitier’s first forays into Red Scare-era Hollywood
Set in a paranoid America mistrustful of Black people and anyone who seems even slightly leftwing (sound familiar?) it began life at the respected Kiln Theatre in Kilburn
giving Cameron West End hit number two.
Retrograde is so different to For Black Boys that it feels like a reaction against it – is it
We actually did the first reading of it in 2018
It's just really weird watching it last night and seeing how relevant it is
It's more relevant now than it was in ’18
Now there's a level of hysteria there again
Was following up the success of For Black Boys daunting
‘When we put Retrograde on in 2023 I think it was the most anxiety I've ever had in my whole entire life
I've got an audience now who know me for For Black Boys and I’ve made something totally different
you shouldn't be writing this kind of stuff.’
‘I properly came across Sidney when Obama gave him an award [the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009]
I started reading about him and there was one article where he was talking to Oprah about the Red Scare and McCarthyism and how it affected him and how he was blacklisted from Hollywood
And I was like: this sounds like a thriller
I entered a playwriting competition to win some money to take time out to be able to research
and I said to myself “if I win then I’ll write the play”
How did he go so much further than Black actors before him
And being born outside of Jim Crow [segregation] was massive
For a lot of African Americans of his generation being Black and being a man was almost a huge contradiction – like how can I be a man if I’ve constantly got this knee on my neck
Whereas Sidney was born in a place where everybody was Black
so he was able to establish himself as a man: these are the things that I stand for; these are the things that I don’t stand for; you can't talk to me this way; you can’t disrespect me
And then you put this guy in America and it’s like a chemical reaction
Somebody who didn’t really care about what you thought about him or his ancestry or his ethnicity
A man that was going to achieve his goals by any means necessary.’
A lot of young playwrights get a bit of attention and disappear into TV
Or does the fact you’ve had actual hit plays mean you’ll stay with us
I got into theatre because it was more accessible than being given three million pounds to make a TV show
What I want is a really healthy artistic career
I wanna be able to have the artistic freedom to articulate the things that are on my mind.’
A lot has been made about you being a Black playwright
Are you happy to have your ethnicity constantly referenced?
I couldn’t have imagined that five years ago.’
For Black Boys was a very emotional work – did you find people wanted to have big chats with you about it?
I don’t think anybody ever just said: oh
There were emails and talks and I was being invited to do a lot of kind of deeply intellectual studies on things and I’m like: oh man
I don’t have the answers to any of this stuff

Ryan Calais Cameron is back in the West End with something completely different – and necessary
Ryan Calais Cameron has had a life-changing few years
director and Nouveau Riche theatre company founder was moonlighting at a young people’s homelessness charity
writing plays in his free time and rejoicing when his work would sell well at small venues
the south-east Londoner steadily made a name for himself off-West End throughout the 2010s
non-linear exploration of Black men’s mental health
that turned the heat up on his career in ways he never imagined
For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy debuted at the New Diorama theatre in October 2021
garnering middling reviews from broadsheet critics who didn’t quite get the vision
It went down much better with its audiences
and transferred to the Royal Court six months later after a round of tweaks from the author
the show resonated with audiences once again
who raved about how beautifully the script and the actors told stories of Black boys and men and started meaningful discussions about how they’re seen in the world
For Black Boys sold out three West End runs
with early critics swiftly changing their tunes
“It became bigger than any of us could have ever imagined,” Calais Cameron says
“To go to the West End three times and to sell out houses of 800
grew up with five sisters in 1990s Catford
a majority working-class area of south east London
“We might’ve gone to the cinema every now and then
but theatre felt like something that was for people from different classes,” he explains
I didn’t have the money to be making films
Calais Cameron found the lack of variety in roles for Black actors frustrating
While many of his peers sought opportunities in the States
he stayed home to see what he could create for people like himself
I’d love to try and do some stuff here,” Calais Cameron recalls
But at least I can satisfy that creativity in my mind that’s looking for something more than what I’m being offered.”
As we talk in a quiet nook at Kilburn’s Kiln theatre, Calais Cameron is on the verge of his next West End transfer, Retrograde
If you were expecting a similar play to his last smash hit
get ready to strap in for something completely different – a reflection of American anti-communist anxiety in the context of cinematic icon Sidney Poitier
Calais Cameron was aware that Poitier was a significant figure in film as the first Black man to win Best Actor at the Academy Awards for 1963’s Lilies of the Field
But reading further about him around Poitier’s 90th birthday in 2017
the writer discovered how McCarthyism – the political repression and persecution of left-wing individuals amid fear of Soviet influence – had an impact on Black creatives of the time
who were hounded to denounce their peers or risk never working again
“I’d never seen anything about this period told from the perspective of a Black person
somebody that was already under immense oppression and blacklisting,” he says
that really sounds like a really cool script.’”
Retrograde debuted at the Kiln back in 2023
just as the first West End run of For Black Boys began
Critics marvelled at how masterfully the quick-fire dialogue transported the room to 1950s California
with a trio of distinct characters that seemed perfectly ripped from the time – Poitier
played by Ivanno Jeremiah; a coarse film executive named named Mr Parks (Daniel Lapaine)
Jeremiah is the only actor that has come along from the Kiln to the West End run at the Apollo theatre (Parks is now played by Stanley Townsend
and Bobby by Oliver Johnstone) – partly due to timing
partly due to Calais Cameron considering him an indispensable part of the story
“Ivanno just has the spirit of Sidney,” he says
It’s one of those things where I had to keep Ivanno by any means
because the performance that he delivers is just breathtaking
We’ve done a lot to make sure that we keep him.”
The play is inspired by a real scenario Poitier faced
in which he was told to denounce Paul Robeson
one of his acting heroes and an active civil rights campaigner
Calais Cameron knew he’d have to research long and hard
“It was unlike a lot of the stories I had written at that time that were about myself or my environment – I could do my research just like that,” he recalls
I was researching a completely different culture.” Thankfully
after winning the Offies Adopt A Playwright Award in 2018 for his play Rhapsody
Calais Cameron had the funds to spend a year researching full-time
visiting the States and learning all he could on the ground
Step one in the road to Retrograde was delving deep in Sidney Poitier: the man
“I was very aware of the public image that Sidney had
stately Black man – but who is Sidney Poitier when the lights are off
Who is he when he’s had a bad day?” Then came learning about the politics of the time
which Calais Cameron noted as being remarkably familiar to the present day
“There’s that hysteria about people fearing that they’re ‘losing their country’
which is very similar to the stuff that is happening right now,” he says
“I love the fact that there is so much similarity that I can draw from.”
As a writer and director, Calais Cameron relishes being deeply involved in the creative process of moving his work from page to stage. Kiln’s artistic director and CEO Amit Sharma resumes directing duties for Retrograde at the Apollo
with the playwright more than happy to bring in others’ ideas to craft the finished product
I don’t think that that feeling of standing in a room with all these people dissecting and adding colour to something that only used to exist in my mind will get old,” he says
“It’s probably one of the most special experiences that you could ever have as an artist
Calais Cameron has written for TV shows such as The Flatshare
With more work comes more recognition – and a new lifestyle
Calais Cameron mentions that his success has meant he
his wife Shavani and their four children have been able to move to a new area – a major life moment
but you still want to attach yourself to things that you’ve always known,” he admits
“So I feel like someone who’s in between two worlds constantly.”
An excellent run of plays and widespread recognition doesn’t mean it’s time to rest
so I always know that I’m one bad job away from going back to Catford,” Calais Cameron laughs
“I have less time now as well – when I was writing For Black Boys and Retrograde
I didn’t have commissions; I had a full-time job
Writing For Black Boys was a process over 10 years
Nobody today is giving me 10 years to write any project
but I don’t want to give something that I don’t feel like is of the right quality.”
Even though his working circumstances have changed
with more pressure to put out work for mass appeal
Calais Cameron has no interest in putting out art for the sake of being popular
“If I was just trying to do the same but different
I would’ve written “For Black Grandads” after For Black Boys
just because it’s what people think they want,” he says dryly
“But here’s something like Retrograde instead – it’s completely different
and hopefully you still want it in the same way
But I need to be able to feed my creativity first and foremost.”
I have the feeling that no matter how different this piece is
affable and imbued with a completely refreshing energy
British theatre’s new star has well and truly arrived
