Chloride deposits are markers for early Mars’ aqueous past
with important implications for our understanding of the martian climate and habitability
The Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSIS) onboard ESA’s Trace Gas Orbiter provides high-resolution color-infrared images
enabling a planet-wide search for (small) potentially chloride-bearing deposits
we use a neural network to map potentially chloride-bearing deposits in CaSSIS images over a significant fraction of the planet
We identify 965 chloride deposit candidates with diameters ranging from <300 to >3000 m
136 (~14%) of which are located in the highlands north of the equator
Northern chloride candidates tend to be smaller than in the south and are predominantly located in small-scale topographic depressions in low-albedo Noachian and Hesperian highland terranes
Our new dataset augments existing chloride deposit maps
informs current and future imaging campaigns
and enables future modelling work towards a better understanding of the distribution of near-surface water in Mars’ distant past
This example showcases that CaSSIS color-infrared data can be used to identify potentially chloride-bearing terrain

In THEMIS DCS products chloride-bearing terrain appears teal
blue-green) acquisition of the same deposit
This example showcases that CaSSIS color data can be used to detect potentially chloride-bearing terrain
acknowledging the remaining ambiguity (in this specific case the THEMIS DCS data strongly suggests the presence of chloride)
but – due to the remaining ambiguity –we refer to all CaSSIS detections as “chloride deposit candidates” or “potential chloride-bearing deposits”
Bottom: coverage heatmap (hexmap) of CaSSIS image density including orbit number 27,816
global-scale insights into the distribution and properties of chlorides on Mars
augments existing chloride deposit datasets
and enables future modelling efforts towards a better understanding of the presence of near-surface water in Mars’ distant past and – thus – Mars’ past habitability
this dataset can be used to directly inform future high-resolution and multi-/hyper-spectral imaging campaigns as well as concept studies for future landed missions
Examples of false and (presumably) correct CaSSIS chloride detections
such as clay deposits and imaging artefacts; right: examples of correct chloride deposit candidate detections
We include a total of 56 negative image patches (without any chlorides) to enable the CNN to learn differences between (pink/violet) chlorides and atmospheric/geologic and imaging-related artefacts
such as color fringes caused by moving clouds and spatial color channel misalignments
We use label and data augmentation to prevent overfitting and compensate for the small number of training labels
as well as contrast and brightness modifications
We note that up- and down-sampling augmentation operations are not able to bridge the gap in spatial resolution between the different available
multi-spectral remote sensing datasets as introduced above
the augmentation of the spatial resolution (\(\pm \) ~0.4 m/pixel) helps to make the detector more robust against small variations in the spatial resolution of the CaSSIS image data (nominally ~4 m/pixel)
02/17/2024) at a rate of ~20 images per minute using one NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 graphical processing unit (GPU)
each CaSSIS image is patched into 1000 × 1000 pixel tiles
We deploy the detector using a confidence threshold (CT) of 30%
effectively maximizing the precision (~78% in the testset) while maintaining total recall (100% in the testset)
Future releases of the CaSSIS chloride-bearing terrain database will be made available under the same DOI but with unique version identifiers (‘Bickel_et_al_2024_chloride_CT03_vn.n’)
The outputs of the processing pipeline include full-resolution crops (thumbnails) of all detected candidate chlorides as well as a rich set of metadata
including geographic information and CNN-derived information
All CaSSIS-identified chloride deposit candidates are reported in one single.csv file
which includes 23 separate metadata columns
providing geographic and CNN-derived information:
cassis_ID: the ID of the CaSSIS image (MY….NPB_browse.png)
cassis_ID_short: the short ID of the CaSSIS image (MY….)
date_time: the datetime string of the CaSSIS image
center_LON_180d: the longitude (180° domain) of the center of the detection in degree
center_LAT_pc: the planetocentric latitude of the center of the detection in degree
chloride_diameter_meter: estimated chloride deposit size in meter (using the diameter of the CNN-predicted bounding box; expected to overestimate deposit size, see e.g. Figure 5)
upper_left_x_img: the x image coordinate of the NW corner of the detection in pixel
upper_left_y_img: the y image coordinate of the NW corner of the detection in pixel
lower_right_x_img: the x image coordinate of the SE corner of the detection in pixel
lower_right_y_img: the y image coordinate of the SE corner of the detection in pixel
center_y: the y image coordinate of the center of the detection in pixel
center_x: the x image coordinate of the center of the detection in pixel
confidence: the confidence score as achieved by the CNN
cassis_resolution: the spatial resolution of the CaSSIS image (m/pixel)
emission: the emission angle of the CaSSIS image in degree (0° = nadir-looking; 90° = horizontally-looking)
incidence: the solar incidence angle of the CaSSIS image in degree (0° = vertical illumination; 90° = horizontal illumination)
phase: the solar phase angle of the CaSSIS image in degree (0° = illumination aligned with viewing direction; 180° = illumination opposite to viewing direction)
sub_solar_longitude: sub-solar longitude (i.e.
local_time: the local Mars time in 24:00 h (12:00 = noon)
num_filters: the number of filters available for the CaSSIS image (3 or 4)
type: the imaging mode used for the CaSSIS image (stereo pair observations are available for some locations)
thumbnail_ID: the ID tag of the detection thumbnail
We provide an associated .shp file with the identical information
as an alternative way of loading and using the dataset
Each identified chloride candidate features a full-resolution, KB-sized NPB.tif thumbnail, as cropped from its respective parent CaSSIS NPB image (see Fig. 5)
The name tag of each thumbnail is included in the metadata file
The CNN-derived dataset is subject to a two-pronged review and validation approach
including 1) expert (manual) review and 2) a spatial and geostatistical comparison with chloride deposit datasets derived by earlier surveys using different image data
an expert visually examines every single detected candidate thumbnail as well as the overall geologic context
we remove ~50% of all detected chloride candidates (false positives)
indicating that the real world performance of the detector is significantly lower than its testset performance
a detector’s incomplete understanding of the full variability of the target’s geomorphic and spectral appearance
potentially pinkish/reddish/white-bluish mineral deposits)
and the frequency and nature of imaging artefacts

Top right; geomorphic context and topographic profile as provided by CTX and MOLA; cross-section indicated by white dashed line (A-A*) on the CaSSIS image
Bottom; the CaSSIS-detected chloride candidate as re-imaged by HiRISE
The catalog of identified chloride deposit candidates can be displayed by every regular Geographic Information system (GIS) software
either by importing the .csv file as a delimited text file or by dragging and dropping the associated .shp file into the GIS’ GUI
The thumbnail records can be viewed with every regular image viewer. We recommend using the full CaSSIS image whenever studying a specific chloride deposit candidate, to maximize the geologic context available for interpretation. It was the view of the calanques of Cassis and the Mediterranean that convinced Marielle and Dimitri Droisneau to buy up La Villa Madie
and whilst the vista is certainly a bonus for diners
it’s the food that keeps people coming back
The owners might humbly describe themselves as a 'contemporary innkeeper couple'
but since opening their doors in 2011 the restaurant has become not only a Cassis institution
but also earned a much-coveted three Michelin stars. There are no signature dishes here

The new restaurant – Cassis – has a projected completion date of fall 2025
We’re going to switch to envisioning-the-future mode. It’ll be a bit, but Birch’s Kyle Knall announced last week that he and his wife Meghan will open a second restaurant
It will be called Cassis – the French word for “black currant,” it also refers to the town in Provence
It’ll be an all-day bistro offering classic French dishes – he names moules frites
as the kinds of things you’re likely to find there
The restaurant – to anchor the new Third Ward high-rise
333 Water – has a fall 2025 projected completion date
The Knalls are working with local firms Amy Carman Design and Dan Beyer Architects
leather banquettes and vintage chandeliers into the design of the 5,175-square-foot space
To whet diners’ appetites for the new spot
Birch is hosting a pop-up dinner series that features dishes you might see on the menu at Cassis
With Cassis, he and Meghan want to create a “bustling,” “fun” experience for diners – something he thinks many restaurants in Paris do a good job of. The location will help that, he thinks. “You’re walking down the sidewalk looking at this new, modern building,” then “walk in the door [of Cassis] and hopefully feel like you’re taken away to Paris or Provence,” he says.
And also, the name “Cassis” – light, upbeat, fun. “There’s a bar in New Orleans called Le Bon Temps Roule [which translates to “The Good Times Roll.”] I love the idea of ‘bon temps’… I wanted [the name] to feel fun. I wanted it to represent a good time, but also not something you have to think too hard to pronounce or say,” says Knall.
Cassis will have seating for about 200, which is larger than Birch. And what a corner it will occupy – St. Paul and Water, kitty-corner from the Milwaukee Public Market. An area of plentiful food traffic. Says Knall: “We want [Cassis] to be something that everybody can go in and feel comfortable finding something delicious, from steak frites to a croque madame.”
Until 8 pm Wednesday. Conditions are favorable for severe storms, including tornadoes.

Cassis says he hopes the issue of tariffs can be resolved through dialogue with the aim to convince the United States to return to a multinational discussion.
the US and China are the three most important trading partners for Switzerland and one can’t be left out.
He pointed out Switzerland and China have had close diplomatic links for the last 75 years

“Mars is currently a desert world that used to be covered by rivers
and possibly oceans some 3.5 billion years ago,” said University of Bern researcher Valentin Bickel and his colleagues
“A cold era began when Mars lost its magnetic field and could no longer hold its own atmosphere
it left mineral fingerprints on the surface.”
the researchers used a neural network to map potentially chloride-bearing deposits in CaSSIS images over a significant fraction of Mars
They identified a total of 965 chloride deposit candidates with diameters ranging from 300 to 3,000 m
those salt deposits formed from shallow ponds of water or brine that evaporated in the Sun,” the scientists said
“People use a similar method to produce salt for human consumption in saltwater pools on Earth.”
“Very salty waters could have become a haven for life
a beacon for habitable places on Mars,” they added
“High concentrations of salt allow water to remain liquid at temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius.”
“The chloride deposits in the picture above and its direct relation to liquid water make areas such as Terra Sirenum good targets for future robotic missions searching for signs of life.”
“Chloride-bearing terrain does not stand out in regular black-and-white images but shows up as a distinct purple hue in color-infrared images
making CaSSIS a unique tool to study the distribution of salts across Mars.”
“Our paper includes never-seen-before data that helps us better understand the distribution of water in Mars’ distant past,” they said
“TGO continues to image Mars from orbit to understand its ancient past and potential habitability.”
“The spacecraft is not only returning spectacular images
but also providing the best inventory of atmospheric gases and mapping the planet’s surface for water-rich locations.”
“Understanding the history of water on Mars and whether it once allowed life to flourish is at the heart of ESA’s ExoMars missions.”
The team’s paper was published this month in the journal Scientific Data.

Tim Ward and his wife Teresa left their corporate careers
sold everything and decided to become global travelers
They became flâneurs — a French term for one who wanders without specific purpose
We were always entranced by the promise of the little seaside town named Cassis. Nestled right next to the city of Marseille, Cassis is the first of a series of dozens of beach towns that stretch some 150 miles along the Provence/Côte d’Azur coast to the Italian border
like a glistening string of white pearls around the blue décolletage of the Mediterranean Sea
Teresa (my beloved spouse and co-conspirator in all my flâneuring escapades) and I have been up and down much of that coast in years past but never made it to Cassis
Their very popularity has led to the construction of endless resort hotels
and over-built beach promenades that squeeze the authenticity out of former fishing villages

Our basis for this hypothesis was that the word "cassis" is French for “blackcurrant.” Cassis confiture is my favorite jam
and Créme de Cassis is delightful liquor; both are made from that same small
is simply a dollop of crème de cassis in white wine; you can upgrade the wine to champagne and voilá
how could Cassis be anything less than simply splendiferous
We decided to go there for a week and see if our hunch was right
even be a place we would consider calling home in the later years of our retirement as we move from the “go-go years” to the “go-slow years”
We were so right about Cassis and so very wrong at the same time
First impressions from the balcony of our little rental condo (above): super bon! The view overlooked the wide blue bay and gave us a full frontal view of the most amazing cliff we have seen since the fiords of Norway. With a drop of 394 meters to the sea, Cap Canaille is, in fact, the highest Maritime cliff in France
“Aha!” I said to myself as I stared at that cliff the day of our arrival
“The red ochre layers in those cliffs…could that be the reason the town is named Cassis
Because the cliff looks exactly like cassis in a kir?”
That’s the part Teresa and I were dead wrong about
We really should have known better because cassis
The town of Cassis was called Tutelæ Charsitanæ in the first century
from the pre-Indo-European “Kar” meaning “stone” or “rock.” (Not to gloss over that point
very old: the town was named before the Gauls
or any other historically known people passed through the area)
the name had evolved to Carsicis and has since been simplified to Cassis
But that mistake is what finally got us here
with people swimming and scuba diving in the turquoise waters even in mid-April
just a ten-minute walk from the center of town
It’s tucked away in a secluded bay close to the big cliff
Owned by the lords of Baux in the 13th century, the chateau is now a privately run guest house (I’m sure it's been renovated)
it’s not much more expensive to stay there than the hotels in the town center
Teresa insists we stay in the castle next time we visit Cassis — and there will be a next time
I’m angling for the “Upper Dungeon” room (no joke!) at 290€ a night
The castle owners light up the outer walls in the evening in a display that looks utterly breathtaking from the port
We caught a glimpse of it one evening as the full moon rose over the cliffs:
limestone valleys carved into dramatic cliffs on the western edge of Cassis through eons of time
One can either hike along the tops of the Calanques from town along well-marked trails or visit them by water via a tour boat from the port
At the end of each Calanque is a beguiling
the tour boats allow passengers to jump overboard for a swim
an underwater cave was discovered 37 meters below sea level in one of the Calanques
Divers followed its course deep into the darkness until they emerged above the waterline into a grotto covered with prehistoric wall drawings
The art has been dated to both 27,000 and 20,000 years ago: a time when the sea levels were much lower
and the cave entrance would have been on dry land
So idyllic little Cassis has drawn people to it for a long time
so it’s likely the people lived around where the town is today
Maybe these folks were the first to call this area Kar
Cassis has its own vineyards and winemakers that produce mostly white and rose wines that are every bit as crisp as the much more expensive Chablis
though (and here I rely on the Teresa’s recollections
for she has a memory palate akin to Sherlock Holmes’) is that Chablis is more “fruity and floral,” while Cassis white wines “taste like citrus and stone.”
One can stroll from the center of Cassis to the vineyards in about 10 minutes and drop by the wineries for a tasting. We chose St. Magdeleine Winery for our visit because it was one of the oldest and reputedly the best
It also specializes in eco-friendly “bio wines.” As we approached the road
we could see their vines growing in the shadow of Cap Canaille
A delightful young woman named Camille hosted our tasting
she told us all about the wines of Cassis and the winery
she said last summer was so hot they had to harvest the grapes in August
(The annual harvest festival is typically in late September)
Camille brought us out back to for the view of the bay from the estate
and showed us the little house where the parents of the winemaker live:
she politely waited till Camille was no longer in earshot to tell me this)
I pointed out we would probably have to buy the whole winery to get the house
but even if we had the funds for such foolishness
neither of us relished the actual work involved in winemaking
We would only be good at drinking the profits
That stupendous red cliff has a winding road that runs from Cassis all the way up and around to La Ciotat
the view from the cliff edge looking down over Cassis and the Calanques is gorgeous — if somewhat vertigo-inducing
Teresa and I were careful to heed the dramatic signs warning of crumbling edges that could send careless tourists cartwheeling their doom
While there are many marvelous things around Cassis
It’s amazing that Cassis retains so much of its historic character as a fishing village
There are no high rises in the center of town
No highway runs along the promenade (it’s pedestrian-only)
It helps that Cap Canaille and the Calanques are both protected parks
much of the area is steep slopes riven with limestone faults and ridges — a developer’s nightmare
It must be hard to find open spaces that are flat enough and stable enough to build on
The seafront promenade is lined with seafood restaurants and cafés
The daily catch goes straight to the kitchens and supports the local fisherfolk
The port has been converted into one big marina…but no super yachts
Some 15 boats that could seat upwards of 50 passengers wait patiently by the lone kiosk that sells all the tour tickets to the Calanques
One can walk these quiet streets and find maybe a restaurant or café here and there
Most of Cassis looks like a little pretty place going about its own business in its own quiet way
as it has done for the last few thousand years (and maybe much more)
We were so charmed by the little town that when our days ran out on our condo on the hill
We moved down to the promenade and took a room right above our favorite fish restaurant for a few extra nights of Cassis bliss
it gets quite hot and crowded with tourists
she does not see them at all during the summer months
They either leave or just hunker down in their air-conditioned homes for a staycation
you have to be certain where you stay has a parking spot
or else you must stow your car in a public lot…not easy during tourist season
the roads are also quite steep; if one is not in good shape
it can be a chore to get back and forth on foot from any condo or guest house with a view
there’s not much in the way of nightlife or facilities
and there are connections by bus and by train
So it’s easy enough to get to a large city if one wants a break from all the bliss of Cassis
Paris has been our home base for the past two and a half years as we have flâneured around Europe
I’m pretty sure the citizens find it enough for them
in the Provençal tongue (attributed to the great Provençal Nobel Laureate Frédéric Mistral) is: Qu’a vist Paris
which means: “Who has seen Paris and not Cassis

The cassis flavor was released in Germany in 2017 and has since been sold in various countries as a long-time popular product
I had never encountered it in any country until now
I was fortunate enough to find it at a LIDL store in Slovakia
The KONG STRONG series is known for offering high-quality flavors at a low price
so what kind of flavor does this new addition have
I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed
I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages
so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks
collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries
The drink lacks the sourness and fragrance typically associated with cassis
making it a stretch to call it a cassis flavor
it can be enjoyed as a complex and evolving rich fruit flavor
blending an apple-based juice with multiple fruits
I was surprised by how delicious and dynamic the fruit flavor was
While it may not live up to the cassis name
it still deserves a high rating on its own merits
The striking color made it stand out on the shelf
and since I hadn't seen it in other countries before
It reminded me of the vivid-colored cocktails from the Czech Republic that had been released previously
I feel like I got to see another unique feature of the KONG STRONG series from Eastern Europe

This past weekend, a little rain in the south of France turned the finish chute of the Marseille-Cassis 20K into a surprise slip-and-slide for the top finishers, adding a bit of uncertainty to the otherwise intense race. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, but the unexpected wipeouts made for some spectacular (and entertaining) finish-line footage.

Third-place finisher Felix Bour of France must have taken notes from those ahead; he managed to stay on his feet and finish with style, avoiding the hazard.

These mats are typically made from durable
non-slip rubber or PVC and designed to withstand heavy foot traffic and bad weather
They’re engineered to prevent slipping—though this particular mat seemed to miss the mark
Let’s just hope the race didn’t get it second-hand from Facebook Marketplace
The Marseille-Cassis 20K has been a fixture in the French Riviera every October since 1979
What began as a modest race with just over 700 participants now attracts a massive crowd
setting a new record this year with more than 12,000 finishers

Nice local Chloe Braithwaite finds respite from the summer crowds of the Cote d'Azur in the sleepy towns that surround France’s oldest city

In the peak of summer, Nice, like many of the major towns along the French Riviera, is rather full. Not as full as Paris or Barcelona
but enough that finding a bare patch of pebble along the city’s famous Baie des Anges is just this side of frustrating
People hustle onto the tram by the city’s Old Town
sweaty bodies cramming into every available space
while visitors from out of town – not realising reservations are essentially obligatory – stand in queues surrounding restaurant terraces
sighing loudly in hopes of pity from the harried wait staff
I adore the city year-round; its sunny disposition and famously colourful facades will always be charming to me
but when friends ask when they should stop by
I always say this is a town best visited in spring or autumn
and the cafes and bars that line the narrow
labyrinthine streets can spare a seat for me
However, the lesser-known shores by Marseille are perfect for summer. The trick is in finding those charmingly quiet fishing village-esque towns that are off-radar for many non-French visitors
This sweeping stretch of the Mediterranean feels forgotten
despite attracting a host of creatives and intellectuals over the years
languid mornings or hikes spent chasing the sun along those rough-hewn seaside paths the French call les sentiers du littoral
