Ignatius Press has just come out with a new edition of Jean-Pierre de Caussade’s oustanding work of spiritual direction
written in the 18th century by a French Jesuit
has become one of the great classics of Catholic spiritual reading
Not only does it deserve a treasured place in each person’s library
but it is well worth revisiting at various stages of spiritual growth
de Caussade’s approach is the insight that God reveals himself through the daily events
and that we can ensure rapid spiritual growth only by fully recognizing and accepting His merciful will in every situation
is a common theme in all authentic Catholic spiritual direction
Some speak in terms of “resignation”
de Caussade goes even further with the word “abandonment”
implying a relinquishing of our own wills in favor of a joyful perception of and total reliance on the will of God
His treatment of this topic is by far the most comprehensive we have in any one place
I first used this book in an old reprint by TAN of the Burns
which itself was based mostly on four separate volumes published in the 1930s covering various portions of the material
The difficulty with the various editions of his work is that he not only gave comprehensive spiritual direction to the Sisters of the Visitation in Nancy while chaplain there from 1733 until 1740
but he also followed up with numerous letters on personal questions and related topics after he had gone on to other assignments
Thus his entire spiritual doctrine is contained in a variety of conferences
and letters over a considerable period of time
some 110 years after the Jesuit spiritual director’s death
de Caussade’s writings were handed over to a Jesuit writer and editor
and organized it into a logical progression in one comprehensive book entitled Abandon à la Providence Divine which
owing to its tremendous value and popularity
has gone through many editions since that time
Strickland translation of the 10th French edition
originally published in 1921 by Catholic Records Press
It is worth mentioning that the book has sometimes been published under the title of The Sacrament of the Present Moment
de Caussade’s wonderful spirituality
de Caussade treated the concept of abandonment both as a virtue to be acquired by all Christians
and as a spiritual state to which some souls are especially called. Both aspects are set forth in an initial treatise posessing significant theoretical depth
This treatise forms the first part of the book
de Caussade also addressed many particular concerns
including questions raised by the various sisters
and of course he gave considerable counsel to the souls under his care in their varying stages of spiritual growth
and all of this more practical material is organized into sections which form the latter portion of the book
“Spiritual Counsels of Father de Caussade.”
It is because his subject is treated so comprehensively
marked by both particular questions and varying spiritual stages on the way
and divided between considerations of both the virtue and the state of abandonment
de Caussade’s advice is so broadly applicable
Though prepared specifically for religious
who are doubtless more often called to what Fr
de Caussade described as the state of abandonment
the treatment of abandonment as a necessary virtue obviously applies to lay people as well
And the various stages of spiritual growth
along with the different problems encountered in these various stages
at least potentially apply to all devout souls
A survey of the main sections of the second part of the book reveal something of its scope:
This book is at once extraordinarily deep and wonderfully practical
It is superbly organized—subdivided into titled sections which generally run from just one to three pages
making the presentation perfect for daily spiritual reading
de Caussade’s work is one of the great classics of spiritual direction
holding a place in Catholic spiritual literature which is about as high as one can go without having been canonized and declared a doctor of the Church
I have not tried to give a comprehensive explanation of Fr
as if it is something the reader must fully grasp before committing himself to it
It is enough that Catholic spiritual directors around the world have been recommending the book regularly now for some two hundred and fifty years
de Caussade's insights upon all the priests
If you do not yet own or have not yet used this magnificent book
you should take advantage of the new Ignatius edition and purchase it
And if you have already gone through it some years past
you are probably now at a different stage of spiritual development
and so you may find it is time to make use of Fr

Every morning I read from some type of spiritual writing. Of late I have been reading the writings of the 18th century Jesuit priest Jean-Pierre de Caussade. I began by reading his book Abandonment to Divine Providence, sometimes published as The Sacrament of the Present Moment
The fear of death and of the judgments of God is a good thing as long as it does not go so far as to cause you trouble and anxiety; then it would be an illusion of the devil
Is it because you have not yet done what you have not been able to do
Be careful again in this; it is a delicate subject for it seems as if you wanted to acquire merit for your own assurance
This is not real confidence which can only be founded on the mercy of God
Any other confidence would be vain and presumptuous
since it would rest on your own nothingness
and I know not what wretched works which have no value in the sight of God
Without depending in any way on ourselves let us try and accomplish
and hope only in His goodness and in the merits of Jesus Christ
His son (Jean-Pierre de Caussade – Letter XXIII – The Value of Good Desires)
Every day I read a section and meditate upon whatever might strike me
This is from a letter he wrote to a woman who apparently wanted to be a religious but was not accepted
but his words ring true for me in many situations in my life
How true this is with so many things in life
The Peace of Christ should reign in our hearts
That does not mean that we should never be concerned or afraid
But if it is something that drives us to be overly anxious or preoccupies to such a degree that we cannot function it is indeed an illusion of the devil
I try to remember that there is no fear with Christ
I can redirect my thoughts to Him and if nothing else
“Is it because you have not yet done what you have not been able to do?” Oh
I forget that all things are possible with God and that my self-will alone is not sufficient
My self-reliance fails and I become fearful or worse feel that I am not good enough or become afraid of what others might think of me
It seems that I am often concerned with how I can make people
or the world change so that I can be more comfortable
I try to assert myself more and try harder thinking all the while that I can force some outcome that will indeed make me happy
I must remember that all I have to do is seek God and cooperate with his grace
With God I have the power and capacity to accomplish his works
Am I trying to ‘be good’ for my own assurance
Am I doing my prayer and spiritual practices so I can pat myself on the back and say what a good person I am
Or am I doing these because I truly crave a relationship with God
I must admit that often I am doing my spiritual work out of habit
Sometimes not even paying attention to what I am doing
I do believe that as long as I persevere in the action the mind will follow but I also can try and ask God for the grace for a better relationship with him
my holiness lies with Him alone and the myriad distractions of self only serve to confuse me or tire me
And how does faith really deepen in me when in fact
presumption as well as vain since indeed it rests upon my own nothingness
Can I simply relax into the present moment and be assured that this is all part of God’s divine plan
To continue to persevere in prayer and good works but with nothing more in mind than a complete and ultimate reliance upon God to carry me to what he would have me be
In his various works de Caussade returns time and again to relying with complete confidence upon our creator
A complete and entire surrender to what is in this moment with the full assurance that God will indeed take care of me
You are right in saying that more grace is required to save us in the world than in religion
a much more distinct vocation is necessary for those who have to remain in the world than for the religious state
Sometimes I think I must find more time to pray
Then I find myself beating myself up once again for my failure because life got in the way… again
I get a call from someone who just needs to talk
My daughter got hurt at school and is being taken by ambulance to the hospital
The list of daily emergencies and mundane tasks often times pile up
By the end of the day I once again see that time slipped by and once again I had no time for my quiet meditation or adoration
it is in these hectic and often unplanned spaces of the day that I ask God to remind me to pray
In those moments on the Tram or even during a conversation or on a walk
to become aware that God is with me always and everywhere
There is a time and place for silent mediation
but in the chaos of the world the Peace of Christ reigns
I must simply breath in and remember that it is God who gave me the breath of life (Genesis 2:7)
And that no matter the problem it is better to rest in the present moment of His peace

Dennis Caussade’s life has been one filled with academics
He is currently employed in the human service field and is very committed to his job
But music has also always been a passion and now at age 50
he is hoping to take that hobby to another level
others are taking notice of his talent as well
Caussade grew up in Maryland in a family where medicine was very important
was a nurse who earned a master’s degree and eventually became the Director of Patient Care at a Veterans Administration Hospital in Maryland
“She was 30 when she came to the States and didn’t speak any English.” Caussade said
music was an integral part of his life growing up
“Michelle,” even inspired him to write his own tune
“The lyrics I wrote weren’t exactly appropriate for me to be singing at that time,” he laughed
“Let’s just say I really didn’t understand what I was singing!”
learning and then playing guitar throughout his teens
Caussade took a different path other than medicine
choosing to get his bachelor’s and then master’s degree in social work
although he continued to play guitar and sing at different events
So I really made it a priority to focus on [academics],” he said
Music served as a way to help him deal with that pressure
“It’s always been a way for me to channel my stress and anxiety,” he said
Caussade actually seriously considered becoming an ordained Catholic priest
going as far as having discussions with the then Cardinal of Baltimore
and instead took a job working in the field of human services
he met his wife Louise and the two married in 1999
Both are very supportive of his passion for performing
“I’ve played at different events like fundraisers and open mics,” he said
“I’ve also been invited to perform at festivals in New Bedford and Newport
he will play one of his biggest gigs yet when he performs several sets at the Big E in Springfield
Caussade said his style is reminiscent of James Taylor and his favorite Beatle
He performs covers of popular songs as well as his own material
“They are mostly ballads based on feelings and emotions from my own life,” he said
“We have played together a few times and she is more talented than me
Caussade is nonetheless excited and inspired when complimented on his music
“People say they think I am good and that they like my music,” he said
“So I am just excited to see where it all leads next!”
He is currently recording a CD at True Music Studios in Greenville
and enjoys playing his Furch acoustic guitar which he recently purchased

DAYTONA BEACH — French electric plane maker Aura Aero on Thursday morning announced its selection of Daytona Beach International Airport to become its U.S
hailed as a huge economic development victory for Volusia County
includes an aircraft assembly plant that will create 1,000 jobs with an average salary of more than $70,000 a year
"Aura Aero's decision to establish its U.S
headquarters at the Daytona Beach International Airport is a tremendous win for aerospace
and the people of Volusia County," said Volusia County Manager George Recktenwald in a news release
Aura Aero chose the Volusia County-run airport after considering multiple states
the company narrowed its search to two finalists: Daytona Beach and Flagler Executive Airport in neighboring Flagler County
Financial incentives played a roleBoth counties dangled economic incentives as part of their bids to land Aura Aero
Volusia County offered $500,000 in performance-based incentives the company would receive only if it makes good on its pledge to create 1,000 jobs paying an average of $72,000 a year
Daytona Beach agreed to provide $100,000 in matching funds of that "Grow Volusia" incentive package
The city sweetened the county's bid further by offering a break on property taxes over six years worth a total of $3.58 million
Flagler County offered an even more lucrative incentive package that would have paid Aura Aero $1 million annually for five years in the form of reimbursements on ad valorem taxes collected from the company as well as $650,000 or more a year based on the value of the plant's equipment
"The reason we selected Daytona is the fact that the community altogether brings something that is quite unique," said Antoine Blin
Blin and CEO Jeremy Caussade gave an exclusive interview to The Daytona Beach News-Journal ahead of Thursday's press conference
The attributes they mentioned as standing out for Volusia County included the community's unified efforts to recruit their company led by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
the CEO Business Alliance and Team Volusia Economic Development Corp
Volusia's universities and colleges were also a factor as they will likely be a source of "new talent" the company hopes to fill many of the jobs it plans to create here
where construction is already underway on a 10,000-square-foot hangar building that Aura Aero also plans to use at the university's research park on Clyde Morris Boulevard
Also helping Volusia County's case was the fact that it serves as the north tip of Florida's so-called "Space Triangle" that includes Brevard County (home to Cape Canaveral
Kennedy Space Center and the aerospace-focused economic development organization Space Florida) and Orlando
Aura Aero is based in a similar aviation/aerospace hub in Europe at the Toulouse-Francazal Airport just a few miles outside of Toulouse
Toulouse is considered the aerospace capital of Europe
and several other aviation/aerospace companies as well as the French Space Command & Space Academy and Toulouse Space Centre
chairman of Brown & Brown Insurance where Thursday's press conference was held
presented Caussade with a letter on behalf of the CEO Business Alliance pledging to invest $100,000 towards Aura Aero's operating capital
payable upon completion of the 500,000-square-foot assembly plant
"We're putting our money where our mouth is," said Brown as he shook Caussade's hand
Brown is a member of the CEO Business Alliance
a private group of local business leaders dedicated to recruiting employers to Volusia County that can create high-paying jobs
Caussade and Blin said they had "nothing but praise for Flagler County" even though they ultimately chose Volusia County
One factor that potentially rendered the incentive offer from Flagler moot was the possibility that Aura Aero could receive capital financing from Space Florida to build the $172 million assembly plant for its 19-seater Electric Regional Aircraft (ERA)
If Space Florida agrees to provide the financing
it would exempt the French company from paying ad valorem taxes
That would also negate the need to take up Daytona Beach on its offer to give the company a break on its property taxes
but Caussade acknowledged it's nice to have it in case the capital financing deal with Space Florida falls through
The CEO Business Alliance is assisting Aura Aero in its talks with Space Florida
Caussade said his company does intend to take up Volusia County's $500,000 incentive offer for creating jobs
Regardless of what happens with Space Florida
Aura Aero is committed to proceeding with building the ERA assembly plant here
Aura Aero recently landed an order for 75 cargo versions of its ERA planes from Provo
Utah-based Alpine Air Express and a letter-of-intent for up to 150 passenger-versions of its ERA planes from Dallas
which describes itself as the "world's only 5-star hop-on jet service."
Both deals call for the first deliveries of the ERA planes to be made before 2030
The ERA has a range of 900 nautical miles and the cargo version can transport up to 1.9 tons
Aura Aero also offers its own charging stations which can fully recharge a plane in 30 minutes
Caussade said the planes can also be recharged on stations by other manufacturers
The hybrid-electric planes also uses jet fuel
The primary target market for the ERA planes are small regional airports
Auro Aero says it has orders for more than 600 ERA planes
More than half of those orders are from U.S
The Daytona Beach ERA assembly plant would be responsible for delivering planes to those U.S
Caussade told The News-Journal the hope is for the Daytona Beach ERA plant to make its first plane deliveries by early 2029
Aura Aero also plans to assemble two-seater electric planes in Daytona Beach
They will be built at a 10,000-square-foot hangar building already under construction next to the airport at the Embry-Riddle research park on Clyde Morris Boulevard
The hangar is expected to become operational by May 2025
It is going up behind the Cici and Hyatt Brown Center for Aerospace Technology building also under construction
plans to operate a research center in the Cici and Hyatt Brown building that will create 400 high-paying jobs
Barry Butler in Thursday's news release hailed Aura Aero as an "invaluable corporate partner" that will become an important anchor tenant for the research park
Exactly where will the ERA plant be?Aura Aero plans to lease 54 acres from Daytona airport along Bellevue Avenue
Site work began there earlier this year in anticipation of landing tenants in need of aviation-related industrial land
Volusia County's director of aviation and economic resources
confirmed that Aura Aero will lease the entire 54 acres with plans to initially build a 500,000-square-foot plant that could eventually be expanded to 700,000 square feet
"We're still on track for (site work to be completed by) the first quarter of 2025," he said
"We are excited to be the site of Aura Aero's U.S
The effort (to land Aura Aero) benefitted from the collaboration between a number of stakeholders and business partners."
Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry in the news release called Aura Aero's decision "a monumental step forward for our community."
the ERA plant will need at least 250 to 300 workers
with the goal of growing the workforce to 1,000 over several years
Caussade and Blin said their company intends to employ a mix of experienced skilled workers as well as "new talent," including graduates of Embry-Riddle and Daytona State College
Blin is a French native who attended Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach for a semester in 2009
He called that experience "the best moment of my life
He added that some of his company's employees in France have already expressed interest in working here
Caussade estimates employees transferring from Europe will probably account for 10% to 15% of the total workforce here
Potential opportunities for local suppliersAura Aero also intends to use U.S
suppliers for parts and components used on the aircraft assembled here
"We tend to prefer to have suppliers as close as possible to our facility," Caussade said
That could bode well for the airport which for decades has been trying to find aviation-related users for the hundreds of acres of industrial land on its south side
"This partnership (with Aura Aero) not only highlights the strength and strategic importance of our airport," said Recktenwald
"It also positions our community as a hub for cutting-edge technology and opens the doors for other innovative companies to choose Volusia County."
Another way would be to use it for 6 months doing a reading every First Friday and reflecting upon the chapter throughout the month
The book can even be used as a weekly Lenten devotional
No matter how you use it there is much to glean from it’s pages
One of the positives about this book is that Father Kirby has made Father Causadde’s Abandonment to Divine Providence much more approachable for the modern reader
Father Kirby himself admits the spiritual classic can be a tough read
It’s deep and it’s written with a bit of French stuffiness as was the environment in which Father Causadde wrote
One common theme woven throughout this retreat is worry
We all face it and unfortunately in this harried and hustle bustle society we find ourselves in
we are prone to falling into it’s clutches
You will learn a very important element throughout the this book that will help you combat worry
Do not look to the past as that is where the devil wants to focus
By dwelling in the past we hone in on our failures and shortcomings
if we constantly look to the future we will worry about things out of our control
Mixed in amongst all this we will undoubtedly face very real moments in the present where we unfortunately must suffer
That could come in the form of an illness or the loss of a loved one
It could be a very real struggle much like the one Father Kirby’s family faced with onset of his father’s dementia
It may sound cliché but this suffering each of us will face can be a moment of grace and have some unlikely
Father Kirby covers that in the book as well
To say Be Not Troubled is a packed full of insight would be a true statement but it is one that does not do the book justice
I dare this this will be a book you can and will return to often
No one is perfect we may be able to push aside worry but somehow it always seems to find a way to come back
but the feeling of anxiety and worry remains the same
Use Father Kirby’s retreat to help you overcome those moments and learn how to embrace the present moment where you will soon find God is standing right there by your side

DAYTONA BEACH — Aura Aero, the French electric plane maker that plans to make Daytona Beach International Airport its U.S. headquarters
is one of several companies competing to earn the distinction of becoming the "Tesla of the Skies."
It's a label that aviation industry publications in numerous articles have affixed to both Aura Aero as well as other startups working to develop electric and hybrid-electric airplanes
"I think it's just a way to say ... that we're all pioneering the electrification of the aviation (industry)" — just like what Tesla and other car makers are doing for the automotive industry
is to become a leader in the movement to "decarbonize aviation" by reducing and eventually eliminating the industry's dependence on fossil fuels
why it believes it is poised to help "revolutionize" the aviation industry
and why Daytona Beach looms large in those plans
The planned 500,000-square-foot plant is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs paying an average of over $70,000 a year
Aura Aero was co-founded in 2018 by Caussade
an aviation industry engineer who previously was head of digital design manufacturing services for Toulouse
Joining him in launching the startup were Fabien Raison
who also worked in the DDMS unit for Airbus and is now general manager and chief operating officer for Aura Aero
the former innovation manager for Assystem
a Toulouse-based company whose mission is accelerating "the energy transition throughout the world." Dufaud is now executive director and head of airworthiness for Aura Aero
The company states that it was "born from the desire of three aeronautical engineers to combine the best of the aeronautical industry and digital technology in order to design
manufacture and operate aircraft with unparalleled efficiency in the growing market of eco-efficient and low-carbon vehicles."
Some of its planes are made out of woodThe Dublin
Ireland-based aviation industry publication AeroTime reported that Aura Aero makes its two-seater Integral airplanes out of wood and wood composites from a sawmill in Normandy
best known as the landing site of Allied troops for D-Day
is also where Aura Aero has a small production facility
Some parts for the wooden planes made there are reinforced with carbon fiber and composites
the company's head of production told AeroTime
resilient and easily repairable" as well as sustainable
The company's larger eight-engine Electric Regional Aircraft (ERA)
market at its planned Daytona Beach assembly plant
Aura Aero planes are also equipped with state-of-the-art avionics and electronics
a multinational electric utility company owned by the French government
agreed to purchase a stake in the company for an undisclosed amount
Its other investors include the European Innovation Council Fund and a Paris
The company in June also launched a European crowdfunding campaign via the website crowdcube.eu
Aura Aero states that it is 100% owned by European investors
The company already has hundreds of ordersCaussade at Thursday's press conference where Aura Aero announced its selection of Daytona Beach International Airport as its U.S
said his company already has orders for more than 600 of its ERA planes
which it plans to produce both passenger and cargo versions
The passenger version will be able to seat up to 19 people
while the cargo version will be capable of hauling up to 1.9 tons
Those placing orders or signing letters-of-intent to date include Dallas
Texas-based regional airline JSX and Provo
Utah-based cargo carrier Alpine Air Express
More than half of Aura Aero's orders for its ERA planes are from U.S
which is why the company picked Daytona Beach as its headquarters
Its operations here will include both a 500,000-square-foot assembly plant for its ERA planes as well as a 10,000-square-foot assembly plant for its 2-seater planes
The latter is already under construction at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's research park on Clyde Morris Boulevard
It is expected to be ready by May 2025 and will employ 20 workers
The ERA plant will be located on a 54-acre site along Bellevue Avenue that is part of Daytona Beach International Airport
That land is currently being cleared and is expected to be "shovel-ready" by the end of the March 2025
The ERA plant could eventually be expanded to 700,000 square feet
director of aviation and economic resources for Volusia County
Caussade said his company has already designed the ERA plant using architects in France
but said those plans will need to be revised to accommodate the specific requirements of the site at Daytona airport and then go through the permit approval process with the city of Daytona Beach
Construction of the plant is expected to begin by the start of 2027
with completion expected in either mid or late 2028
Caussade said his company hopes to make the first plane deliveries from its Daytona Beach plant by early 2029
Aura Aero is also in the process of building a 430,556-square-foot ERA assembly plant in France that will be located at the Francazal Airport in Toulouse where the company is already based and currently has an 11,400-square-foot plant for its 2-seater planes
Aura Aero says the orders it has received to date for its ERA planes total more than $9 billion
which works out to an average of roughly $16 million per plane
That appears to be in keeping with the going rate for similar-sized conventional planes
which states that large private jets and regional jets cost between $10 million and $80 million
Small private jets and turboprop planes generally cost between $1 million and $10 million
said "We do not want to communicate publicly on the price of the aircraft," because pricing can differ depending on the configuration
The case Aura Aero makes to potential customers is a two-fold argument
Blin said: "There is an urgent need for the existing operators to replace the fleet of old 19-seaters currently in operation
ERA is also a market opener thanks indeed to its economics as well as to the reduced environmental impact (noise and CO2 emissions)."
Caussade in an in-person interview last week said many regional carriers
as well as the so-called "ultra low-cost carriers" keep their fares low because they buy used aircraft
that can also result in a constant need for repairs that can mean lost revenues because the planes are grounded
Then there's the concerns that airlines of all sizes have for the volatility of jet fuel prices
which are subject to sudden increases because of disruptions to global supplies and/or deliveries
Switching to hybrid-electric planes such as Aura Aero's ERAs can help to solve that problem
It also can significantly reduce operating costs in general
"We can cut by two (half) the energy cost and the maintenance cost
is indeed extremely competitive compared to existing (conventional) 19-seaters and obviously even more when compared to small jets," said Blin
"The key financial criteria of the operator is the availability of the aircraft
bringing an increased availability and dispatch reliability."
Caussade at Thursday's press conference said his company's 19-seat ERA planes are designed to connect small communities
as opposed to catering to big cities that require much larger planes
ERA planes have a maximum range of 900 nautical miles
which from Daytona Beach is enough to fly to Toronto
which is still enough to reach destinations such as Atlanta

The prolific and popular author discusses his new book How to Be Holy: First Steps in Becoming a Saint
which he describes as a "festooning" of "the main points" of a great classic
Professor of philosophy at Boston College since 1965
and accessible books for nearly four decades
Whether he is writing a Socratic dialogue depicting the ancient Greek philosopher speaking in at a university today
or a detailed summary of Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologica
a French Jesuit priest who lived from 1675 to 1751
Kreeft recently corresponded with Catholic World Report via email
you say that the book is largely your “festooning” of “the main points of one of the simplest and most practical of all classics of spiritual direction
de Caussade’s Abandonment to Divine Providence.” When did you encounter this work
How did it impact you and your own approach to holiness
Peter Kreeft: It was not the formidable topic or
but my love of the book that mine is a “festooning” or commentary on
I love books that are both simple and practical
That book has been helpful to me for many years
especially when things got difficult either intellectually or emotionally
for it brought me back to the simple center of things
and all-powerful[;] therefore it is utterly logical that if we believe in this God we believe that He works all things together for our good
and utterly practical to have that central trust to hold on to when things get dark and threatening
CWR: Why is it important to study the lives and writings of holy men and women
How can we possibly learn from someone else how to be holy
Kreeft: It is far safer and better to learn from someone else how to be holy than to teach ourselves
others are wiser and holier than we are; that is why we read them
A book is the next best thing to an uncle
you detail why someone should read the book
Included in your reasons are the fact that you endeavored to keep the book ecumenical
applicable to everyone from “eat everything Mommy puts on your plate Catholics” to Muslims
open-minded agnostics,” among others
Why was it important to you for this book to be applicable to so many people
Kreeft: It is obvious why we all need to learn how to be holy: because there is only one God and He has the same essential requirement for all of us
I did not begin by asking how I could write a book that was ecumenical; I began by loving de Caussade’s book and then realized how ecumenical it was
And ecumenical not just by touching the fringes of different religions but by penetrating to the heart of all true religion
CWR: You state: ”To be in search of [sanctity] is like being a fish in search of the sea.” In what way(s) are we surrounded by sanctity as a fish is by the sea
Kreeft: Being a saint, in a sense, is just practicing the presence of God. (That’s the title of another of my favorite books because it is so simple. My Prayer for Beginners is essentially a festooning of Brother Lawrence’s book.) And God is omnipresent
The Creator gives His being and love to every creature not just 13.7 billion years ago
but now in preserving them and providentially caring for them
CWR: Your book is called How to be Holy; it seems that the first question we should ask
before “how,” is “why”: why should we be holy
The Why is twofold: first and most absolutely
for I am holy.” [Leviticus 11:44-45; 1 Peter 1:16] As the first reason is God
the second reason is us: holiness is the meaning of life and the way to joy
in the end: not to have been a saint” (Leon Bloy)
Being holy is to us what flying is to birds and swimming is to fish: without it our life is fundamentally crippled
holiness is something that is almost seen as taboo
The chiefly acceptable practice is to do anything except what the Church would call holiness
Is it more important than ever for men and women to strive for holiness
Kreeft: Yes: hard times are like great pressures in the earth’s crust
Great saints (like Mother Teresa and John Paul II) come from and for bad times
A German cardinal who is very scholarly and often quite wise said one of the worst things I ever heard a cardinal say when trying to justify relaxing the Church’s demand to live in chastity even if one is civilly divorced
He said that the Church does not expect everyone to be a moral hero
That is exactly what the Church does expect
