In response to a heterogeneous and disconnected programme originally from the mid-twentieth century, graal has carried out the renovation and transformation of a former student residence in the French town of Cergy
which seeks to adapt the complex to new contemporary needs
The original complex of the former Linandes Mauves student residence is made up of ten buildings arranged around a landscaped courtyard and connected to a lobby with large common areas
The project aims to conceive the intervention on the existing buildings from both the outside and the inside in a simultaneous and complementary manner
The project developed by graal focused on the demolition of the four remaining buildings to create new ones more suited to contemporary needs
The intervention transforms the four existing buildings with notable architectural qualities
and adds a new building to complete the program
The project cleverly reinterprets the student residence on an urban scale
simplifying the volumes to facilitate the relationship of the students with their living environment
The application of a new exterior skin in grey tones works as an element of union between the new and existing buildings
and allows the vegetation to take center stage
Project description by graal
the Linandes Mauves residence consists of ten buildings arranged around a planted courtyard and connected to a lobby with spacious communal areas
The renovation of the previous phase was particularly complex due to the condition of the existing structure and the presence of asbestos throughout the plasterwork
the program for this operation focused on the demolition of the remaining four buildings in order to create new ones that are more suited to contemporary requirements
was based on a strategy of fundamental transformation of the four existing buildings with architectural qualities and the addition of a new building to complete the programme
The overall design was guided by three main principles:
- Re-interpreting the student residence on an urban scale by applying a new external skin to unify the existing buildings and adding a gable extension to assert its presence on the boulevard.- Exploring the potential uses of the dwellings
while acknowledging the specificities of their complex existing morphologies and developing a variety of architectural features: half-levels
etc.- Revealing the structural conditions of the existing buildings as an economic and aesthetic variable
Unlike the previous rehabilitated residential complex
which featured conventional external insulation with light-coloured plaster
this project introduces a new materiality with the goal to transform the heritage without altering its character
This thermal improvement work is paired with a reconfiguration of the spaces to enhance the quality of life within the dwelling
Improvements to the reception of students throughout the residence are completed by a major refurbishment of the communal and administrative areas and a redesign of the outdoor services
offers a new face to the entire district through its prominent location on the Boulevard de la Viosne
The architectural response plays on the apparent simplicity of the monochrome treatment of the surfaces
gradually revealing subtle games of reflections and transparencies that multiply the visual effects within the site
All the buildings are clad in folded steel
which systematically offers two angles of reflection to the sun's rays
this is further enhanced by the brightness of the stairwells
which are made of glazed concrete that stand out from the façade and project their shadows onto the jagged surface
the cladding is perforated to create a transition between the built mass and the sky above the new city
which closes the volume without obstructing the view
is also deployed on the re-entrant angles of the old architecture
allowing the outdoor spaces to be revealed at the heart of the block
The renovation project raises the question of the tenuous relationship between the façade and the volume in the light of current energy requirements
which sometimes demand that these two elements be designed separately
The draped corrugated sheet metal uniformly covers the formerly complex volumes of the buildings
floating diaphanously across the roof to make up for the gaps created by the half-level organisation of the existing interior floors
this organisational veracity can be clearly seen on the gables
where the differences in levels are materially illustrated at the junction of the two faces of the envelope
The composite organisation of the 144 apartments
which creates the richness of the internal layout
can then develop freely without conflicting with the rationality of the façade
which now responds to the urban scale in his whole and goes beyond the module of the individual studio
The multiplicity of facade formations in the existing structure (loggias
balconies and setbacks) is thus compensated by this new unifying and insulating skin
is left to the imagination of the observer through the design of the windows
while creating a structuring logic on the scale of the building complex
also allows one to occasionally grasp the irregularities of the previous composition
The project leans on conceiving the intervention on the existing from both the exterior and the interior simultaneously and complementarily
dictated by economic constraints and the need for site management efficiency
does not limit the possibilities for internal development but
unifies the disparate situations inherited from a heterogeneous existing plan
While the intervention at the urban scale aims to simplify volumes to facilitate the students' relationship with their living environment
the work on the interiors of the existing buildings seeks
to reveal the complex interweaving of the inherited construction and layout systems
By exposing the concrete structure of the lobby (the living space) or leaving the cinder blocks dividing this palette of greys and textures gives the white partitions and linings a particularly striking brightness and luminosity
turning the most basic and common material in rehabilitation into an event of the interior design vocabulary
the light grey of the overall design allows the vegetation to take pride of place
framing a variety of landscape or urban situations
against this backdrop that refuses to efface itself
several objects stand out due to their shape or colour
The metal staircases connecting the half-levels have been repainted to restore their original bright blue color
These colour accents are also used in the signage and on the interior furniture in the rooms
designed around this colour and its complementary shades
Other pure geometric shapes are used in the communal areas
such as the chrome cylinders in the ventilation ducts and the benches of elongated white concrete paving stones

This piece of public art stretching over three kilometers long stands just outside of Paris
Construction began on the immense work of art in 1980 and was not finished until the early 2000s—some pieces are still considered works in progress
Axe Majeur (Major Axis) was created by Israeli sculptor Dani Karavan
Working with Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill
Karavan designed a piece of art that combined large-scale sculpture and urban planning
which include the 36-meter tall Belvedere Tower
12 columns to mirror the 12 segments of the whole piece
One of the most striking features is the long footbridge
The bridge leads to the perfectly round "Astronomical Island."
Karavan was known for creating these large sculptural works
many of which merge into their surrounding environments
The monumental piece of urbanism and landscape art offers a very satisfying view
You can stroll along the 3.2-kilometer line (wear comfy shoes
there's a lot of stairs) and cross some satisfying panoramas made of perspective and geometrical giant sculptural shapes carved into the French countryside
If you go there at night you will discover a totally different place shaped with lights and a huge red laser pointing straight to Paris at the end of the line
This solitary convex mirror sculpture at an abandoned ferry station at the edge of a fjord reflects the scenery back at the viewer
This modern sculpture looks out over the sea and amplifies sound from the inside

ESSEC’s main campus in Cergy-Pontoise
The 116-year-old school will have a dramatically different look this fall
ESSEC Business School will be dramatically different — physically but by no means philosophically
One of France’s premier B-schools, École Supérieure des Sciences Economiques et Commerciales, founded in the early 20th century, is undergoing a massive makeover at its main campus that is scheduled to be complete in time for the start of the fall semester. The transformation includes pedestrianization
resulting in a 40% reduction in energy use campus-wide
It also includes the creation of a building that seems destined to be the envy of graduate business education in France: the Pierre Nanterme Center for Responsible Leadership
a two-story classroom building with 1,400 square meters of pedagogical spaces “designed to meet the needs of tomorrow.” The entire ground floor will be dedicated to “Enlightening Entrepreneurship,” with the first floor optimized for
nouveau directeur de l’ESSEC: On the topic of climate change and sustainability
“schools need not be in competition”
ESSEC is unquestionably a business school on the rise. The Financial Times ranked its MBA 64th in the world in 2022, up from 88th just two years earlier
The latter placement puts ESSEC third in France behind only HEC Paris and Edhec
and ahead of INSEAD and a host of other elite schools
The magazine ranks ESSEC’s Master in Management the sixth-best in the world
In 2017, when Vinzi became ESSEC’s dean
the school’s MBA was unranked by the FT
a little over an hour’s drive northwest of Paris in Cergy-Pontoise
is a reflection of the school’s growing role on the European and global stages
it is a reflection of the school’s values
in an interview late last year with Poets&Quants:
“We need the leaders of tomorrow that are both specialized very deeply
but who also have a holistic vision of society
It’s a matter of how the students are able to incorporate in what they do a long-term perspective
And this is something that the schools have to undertake.”
Vinzi has proved to be an agent of dramatic change at the school
as the world reeled from the coronavirus pandemic
he spearheaded a sea change in ESSEC’s operations and organization
“Together” is a roadmap for “social and environmental transition” whose aim has been to transform the school in its three core dimensions: teaching
The plan’s primary goals are no less than the protection of the planet
“to be architects of the required transformations of the business school ecosystem and
How would ESSEC achieve these ambitious goals
With 50 initial “transformation projects,” among them training all students in contemporary social and environmental issues
which the school has done in all its programs since the start of the 2020-2021 academic year
Broad modernization of the school’s four campuses — the others are in Paris
along with “exemplary environmental management” of its campuses and a determined effort to increase the diversity of the student body
(The latter is already partly achieved: ESSEC’s MBA program is more than 50% women
ESSEC launched a new degree that further reflected its mission to train future leaders to respond to major social and environmental challenges
which admitted the first intake of students in August 2022
“is designed to equip future managers with the knowledge
know-how and network they need to have a sustainable impact on their companies and organizations
to become agents of change in an increasingly volatile world and to seize new opportunities from sustainability development.”
A digital rendering of ESSEC’s new Pierre Nanterme Center for Responsible Leadership
“optimized for digital teaching and modular spaces promoting interaction with the corporate world”
Gunther Friedl of TUM School of Management

More than 100 MBA students attended the eighth annual conference
Vinzi says he came away impressed by the dedication of so many to creating a new generation of leaders with the right skills to effect needed change
so it’s important that these students
hopefully they also get transformed within a school,” he says
“They need to represent the solution
They need to really be engaged in making the needed transformation
I feel like our mission at ESSEC — but I think all business schools should go in these directions — is not simply to transfer knowledge but also while they’re at school
get them more and more engaged so they say
we are the actors of change.’ They need to undertake responsibility of making it happen
One more thing I said to the MBA forum was that schools on this topic need not be in competition
then we have a chance that they become engaged actors of positive change
We do a complete job if freely they are engaged
THE POETS&QUANTS INTERVIEW WITH ESSEC BUSINESS SCHOOL DEAN VINCENZO VINZI
What are some of the specifics you talked about during the MBA World Summit
Vincenzo Vinzi: We talked a little bit about what are the required competencies amid the responsible transformation that is ongoing in the world
but also through the evolution of the competencies that the students
participants in MBA but also all the other programs
need to acquire while they’re in the school
because I think these schools are going through hard skills and soft skills for many of the kids
A long-term perspective is not a soft skill
It’s really the way they approach problems
How they keep asking themselves why they do what they do
So this is what we shared and I feel this is extremely important
because I think one thing that is extremely important is that we need to break the silos across disciplines
because in management we’ve always been very good
business schools have been good for decades
in dealing with the new topic when it comes
with respect to the new challenges that the world is facing — or the urgent challenges
many of them are not even new but they become more urgent — and really the call for action is that we need to break silos across disciplines
because having an interdisciplinary approach
having professors collaborate with each other across departments
being able to collaborate with other schools when it comes
when it comes to environmental challenges — it’s not a topic for one discipline
but it’s a topic for many disciplines
It’s not a topic only for a business school
we need the leaders of tomorrow that are both specialized so very deep
but also they need to have a holistic vision of society
And this is something that the schools have to undertake
There are two things that we have been doing at ESSEC very much related to climate change
We have a specific course on responsible leadership
a specific seminar on understanding and changing the world
But what is also an added value is that those topics actually irrigate transversely the fundamental courses
because otherwise there is always a risk that in the morning you follow a course on a specific topic treated
in the afternoon you have a specific course on ecological transition
how do I make the two things coherent with each other?”
So the real value I think is in having those topics not exclusively as another course
but really irrigating transversely the core course
whatever that has an impact on everyone’s life on a daily basis
even though he must not be the specialist of the topic
he must lead the company knowing about this topic as well
So this is the challenge that we have undertaken
It’s really the core of what we’re currently doing
But in what ways do you feel Europe is in the vanguard
that Europe is leading on some of these issues: in sustainability
European business schools are actually a little bit ahead of the U.S
I don’t think of the recognition that we have done something
I think it is a further booster to do even more
But it’s important that at least to be recognized to walk the talk”
it’s a question of sensibility of the school to this topic
I think it also reflects how the region of Europe actually tries to cope with these topics
we are in France and we see how much this topic has been on the political agenda for the past few years
I would say the political sphere of a country or a region
makes the whole region more or less sensitive to some topics
So I think it’s related both to the environment
The purpose of the school was infusing business with ethics
I’m not sure there were many schools that were thinking about business and ethics
all the schools have a sort of engagement in that
But you see the point: The humanist values
actually launched in the region of what is called the COBS
it’s eight business schools in the world that are members of this alliance
It was quite pioneering to launch an alliance with business and the common good
There is a tradition ingrained in our values
They make the engagement on this topic quite
What can you tell us about diversity initiatives at ESSEC
You have a good reputation for bringing women into your programs
and having programs with high proportions of women
What can you tell us about gender and race diversity at ESSEC
I think there are four dimensions that are important
It is extremely important to be as exemplary as possible with respect to the students
for the environmental ecological transition or a lot of things being developed in the pedagogy
So we need to be ourselves exemplary in terms of reducing our carbon footprint
building new buildings that are eco-responsible and so forth
since September 2022 we have an exciting committee with a perfect gender balance
you have a larger majority of women as compared to many other schools
but overall among the employees of ESSEC you have a majority of women
What I have been doing for the past few years was really something that was important to me
was to achieve a point where in the level of the senior leadership team we had this gender equaling
it’s also other diversity: It’s your profile
So we have this equalization of the ESSEC committee
But I think it’s important in terms of sending the right message to the whole community
tools to make people aware of all the topics related to diversity
you have all sorts of biases that sometimes also lead you to behaviors that do not respect diversity
But in other cases you also have behaviors that do not respect diversity because you have a bias
You breach our Charter for the Respect of Others
perhaps because you are not aware of some codes or some behaviors and so on
International Women’s Day — we have a signaling platform at ESSEC
so that anyone witnesses something that he or she believes is inappropriate with respect to the Charter
because we are in administration in a school
through the course in the first year on management
we do have a specific module on understanding risk typing
which should never be constrained but a richness for everyone
the course does not mean giving up what we are
but it’s enriching our roots and enriching also the other of what we are
And what we developed at ESSEC is the Diversity Fresco
You might have heard about the Climate Fresco
which is with respect to the comprehension of all the topics related to climate change
We have developed at ESSEC the Diversity Fresco
which is a serious game with respect to all the topics related to diversity
all the biases that I was sharing with you earlier on
and working in groups so that this serious game
just like the serious game on the topics related to companies
all students undergo this Diversity Fresco
And we do have many other schools and even companies ask ESSEC to deliver this Diversity Fresco in their organizations because
there are diversity issues everywhere nowadays in the world
Another topic with respect to diversity is related to courses
both in pre-experience and post-experience programs
which is a course for female students to negotiate salary
because in some cases you do have a posture of our graduate students in terms of being shy
in terms of not negotiating salary and whatever
And I think it’s important that we help them train themselves
It’s a matter of having the right code
It is a matter of having the right approach
They don’t dare to negotiate salaries
So we set up a course with respect to that
We also have a program which is called Women Be Board Ready
which is related to how women who have reached very interesting high-level positions in companies actually move to the next position
which means opening the doors of ESSEC to more diverse
It means that ESSEC for 20 years has had the Center for Equal Opportunities
This center has been developing programs for searching students at the level of high school
where the objective was not to make the advertisement of ESSEC but provide those students the knowledge of what higher education is
It doesn’t matter disciplines or the school
It could even be for doing literature in the French state university
The issue is that we see that as soon as you go to some middle schools or high schools in France
those students do not even know what is higher education
It doesn’t matter the topic or whether it’s private or public or whether it’s a school or a university
to go there and explain to them what it is
if they’re good academically speaking
I think the social elevator must start much earlier
if elevator starts in the floor that is dry
Nowadays ESSEC is 22% — within the Master in Management
we have 22% of students who have their dossier
which means that they have funded scholarship
which means that when it goes through all sorts of actions
it’s making the system known to the students at the stages in their life as I was sharing
increasing the number and the amount for scholarship
what are some of the differentiators for ESSEC compared to some of your brother or sister schools in Europe
The conversation seems to be really accelerating: I wonder how ESSEC is leading that conversation
100% of our students are sensitized to environmental issues through a very universal approach
So I think those are quite distinguishing features
it means that it doesn’t matter what problem
which means that these topics actually beyond the specific courses
they also actually are treated within the fundamental course
So we have transformed all of our core courses to look at these issues through this lens
we have also created the specialized courses for those who wish to grow these issues in the profound way
It’s a bachelor’s degree in partnership with the local university in Cergy
which seeks to educate the new generation to drive change
which means “Learn how to lead transition project.” Act in French means “Apprend la conduite la transition”
we need more and more profiles with this competence
because when you talk about transition even within companies
you have to federate several actors within a company to make a transversal transition project happen
Another program that we also started is the Master of Science in Sustainability Transformation
And the objective is really to keep future leaders with the knowledge
to make a sustainable impact towards the way business is done
So this is from the pedagogical point of view
I think this is extremely important — linking the pedagogy to the actions of the school
we are committed to becoming exemplary in terms of our own operations at the school
So we are currently renovating our campus here in Cergy
with a high-ecological performance building
even though we’ll have one-and-a-half building more as compared to what we have now
the energy consumption with respect to the standards
a zero-waste plan to reduce campus waste production by 30%
We initiated a zero plastic plan to remove all single-use plastic from our campuses
And we developed a sustainable energy plan
Installation of solar panels on the roofs of ESSEC Cergy campus
participating also in a local renewable energy comparative
So this is to say that there is a big engagement of the school on our own operations
because we computed our carbon footprint and almost two-thirds
64% of our carbon footprint actually is generated by the mobility of our students
So what we’ve done is that we have set up
a responsible mobility plan with three key factors that play a role
students who need to travel for their training
it’s the school that pays in case they take the train
the school makes the investment of paying the cost
But it’s important that at least to be recognized to walk the talk

You might just about imagine a winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature growing up in a place like that
for a laureate to choose such an address and then stay there willingly for almost half a century would bemuse
who last Thursday became the first Frenchwoman to take the literature Nobel
moved to the new town of Cergy-Pontoise — 30 kilometres north-west of central Paris — in 1975
She writes all her works in Cergy: a long-settled outsider among other incomers
“in the midst of lives started elsewhere” (as she reflects in her journal Exteriors) “in Vietnam
After the Swedish Academy announced its choice for 2022
the reporter from Le Figaro hurried up to Cergy
and found the retired neighbour who looks after the author’s cat
She who told him that Ernaux stood for “Auchan” (read Tesco
the kids hanging around in the sun hadn’t heard of their illustrious fellow-citizen
But they soon began pounding their mobiles to find out about her
people are going to say something good about Cergy,” one hoped
There’s much that’s good — or at any rate rich
complicated and interesting — to be said about Cergy-Pontoise and the other planned communities that spread across Europe in the decades after the Second World War
film and even journalism is not where you will find it
Ernaux — born in Normandy in 1940 to peasant-born parents who became the proprietors of a small-town café-grocery — writes in pared-down
pin-sharp prose about intimate experiences shared across classes
her creative memoirs have pierced the veils of shame
silence and taboo to dramatise the most intimate wounds: her father’s class-bound rage (in A Man’s Place)
her mother’s thwarted life and descent into Alzheimer’s (A Woman’s Story)
a bruising sexual initiation (A Girl’s Story)
she turned the stray junk of consumer culture that accumulates in everybody’s brain into material for a masterly collective autobiography of France from the war’s end to the millennium
It was like building a literary Chartres Cathedral out of ring-pulls
Read some recent Anglophone tributes to Ernaux
and you might think that she writes the brand of abstract
disembodied auto-fiction that floats mistily above everyday existence until it comes to rest in its spiritual home: the university seminar-room
Just as she roots her writing in the frail
She tells stories about the events or feelings that give rise to scorn
And she sets them in spaces that polite voices will (still) patronise as tacky
By Boyd Tonkin
“Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!” cursed John Betjeman — the bard of an older
more sedate variety of suburbia — in 1937 about a boom-town that prefigured many later developments
A dozen stops up the RER line from Charles de Gaulle-Etoile
Cergy has never quite attracted Slough levels of disdain
But Ernaux’s stubborn loyalty to it reveals much about her career as an author and the fault-lines that still splinter culture in France
we’re talking class — though not in the way that an older generation of socially-committed writers would have conceived it
Ernaux does not eulogise a mythological proletariat
or a persecuted underclass in the tower-block banlieue
from a safe perch in a Left Bank café or a fine converted mas on some Provençal hillside
she lives in and writes from the kind of mixed community where people come to make
the geometric parks and boxy housing estates of the exurban dream
it rapidly sprang from blueprint to building-site
She felt marooned among “the windswept esplanades
Then the people came; the supermarkets opened; the commuter trains to Paris filled
In and around Cergy she found the right stage on which to mount her exploration of “the violence and shame inherent in society”
and her quest to discover the human essence of “anything that appears to be unimportant or meaningless simply because it is familiar or ordinary”
By David Patrikarakos
like four other new towns ringed around Paris
came into being in the wake of the SDAURP (Schema d’Amenagement et d’Urbanisme de la Region Parisienne) plan of 1965: almost 20 years later than Britain’s first wave of New Towns
but roughly at the same time as Milton Keynes
it marks 50 years of official existence after Paris master-planner Paul Delouvrier saw his cherished villes nouvelles begin to rise
They offered an alternative — more socially diverse
integrated and architecturally ambitious — to the housing projects of the banlieue that had fast descended into sink estates
Places like Cergy (in France or Britain) can boast neither a chic pedigree — though Pissarro and Cézanne painted on the still-wooded banks of the Oise — nor the pathos and heroism of deprivation
Taste-makers tend to treat them with sheer indifference
So Ernaux’s insistence that we find a key to unlock the secrets of modern social and emotional lives in the new-town grocery queue
“a supermarket can provide just as much meaning and truth as a concert hall”
Britain’s new towns and cities still await their Ernaux
we have Mike Leigh-style social comedy aplenty: aspiration
embarrassment and humiliation in off-the-peg executive homes or kitsch bistros
You can argue until the (concrete) cows come home about whether this mode grows from a place of love or hate
it soon runs into strict limits of tone and scope
the strong British tradition of satirical urbanism — tart and witty in an architectural writer like Ian Nairn
florid and visionary in the exurban rambles of Iain Sinclair — does not exactly condescend to dwellers in new towns or in the residential sprawl that Nairn dubbed “subtopia”
new towns became dystopian backdrops for tales of social anomie and breakdown: Stanley Kubrick filmed some of A Clockwork Orange on the brutalist Southmere Estate in Thamesmead
JG Ballard (in fiction) and Jean Baudrillard (in critical theory) have much to answer for in this prefab notion of the planned urban ensemble as an inevitable hell-hole of alienation
and the metaphysical anguish supposedly bred by new-town architecture mysteriously dissolves
Cergy for Ernaux — even in its more stylish
affluent corners — may figure as a microcosm of consumer capitalism
But she never pretends that you’d escape it by moving to Menton or Montparnasse
By Boyd Tonkin
we make the memories that matter out of anywhere and anything
And I should confess that my fondness for her work has a little to do with another
Much of her 2016 book A Girl’s Story recounts
a teenage sexual encounter at a summer camp in Normandy
moves on to the young Annie’s stint in 1960 as an au pair in North Finchley
We lived a few hundred yards away from the shops at Tally Ho Corner where the young French help gleefully guzzles “lemon curds
I would have bought the same sweets at the same counters she evokes in some positively rhapsodic passages
Monsieur Proust with your tisane-dunked madeleine (Ernaux certainly knows
she took a nostalgic trip up the Northern Line to revisit North Finchley
even the Gaumont cinema (where I spent many Saturday mornings) had gone and “only the Woolworth’s remained”
Annie suffers the traumas and terrors of adolescence
in the midst of all the mundane actualities that anchor our memories in both place and time
she sits “alone on a bench in a park near Woodside Park Station
I start a novel…” Thus the six decades of a Nobel laureate’s literary career launch from a park bench (almost) at the outer-suburban end of a Tube line
and author recently of The 100 Best Novels in Translation

The students of the Yeshiva in Cergy, Paris were determined to travel to the Rebbe for 11 Nissan, so they devised a plan which took them through Serbia... Full Story
It has been two months since the students of the Yeshiva in Cergy
led by Rabbi Yossi Davidowicz and Rabbi Shmuel Lubecki have been trying to find a way to get to the Rebbe’s Ohel for 11 Nissan: indeed
travel has been prohibited because of health restrictions due to the pandemic
The United States does not allow the entry of travelers coming from Europe and
a plan emerged and finally resulted in this much desired trip
the students have sat at a Farbrengen with Shluchim
and they resolved to give the Rebbe a spiritual gift for his birthday
teachers and students traveled to Serbia and stayed there for two weeks
All the details had been carefully prepared – from the meals to the study papers
the students behaved as in Yeshiva thanks to the hospitality of Rabbi Yehoshoua Kaminsky who allowed them to pray and study in his Chabad center
they took a direct plane to New York with their Mashpia
the trip took place in a special atmosphere
with great enthusiasm and full of thanks to G-d
everyone headed to the Ohel to pray and thank the Rebbe that everything had gone according to plan
the students and their teachers then proceeded to a joyful farbrengen that lasted until morning
the students continued and even intensified their study program
They left directly for Paris on Wednesday evening
after the festivities of 11 Nissan: at the airport
they prayed to Maariv to the tunes of Yom Tov and
began to dance to the tune of the Rebbe’s new Nigoun (Chir Hamaalot Karati Vayaanéni…) in front of all the astonished and moved travelers
Certainly this 11 Nissan will remain engraved in the hearts of the students
especially after all these calculations and these preparations: this Yeshiva was the only one in the whole world to have deserved to be able to spend the 11 Nissan with the Rebbe

The extension and restructuring of the Crous University Refectory in Cergy
at the heart of the park of the Cergy prefecture
Located at the heart of the park of the Cergy prefecture
the restructuring and extension of the university refectory is an opportunity to re-establish a link with a large-scale landscaped public space while adapting it to current programming requirements
A kiosk in a mixed wood and steel structure is skillfully placed on the roof of the original refectory
creating an element in dialogue with the urban and landscape dimensions
Designed as a light pavilion on a topographic mineral base
the kiosk becomes an element of unification between the different parts of the refectory
allowing it to assert its presence while ensuring the architectural coherence of the whole
The openings of the existing building are designed in continuity with the kiosk envelope
creating a rhythmic ensemble in relation to the park
the interventions on the existing structure consist in reinforcing the relationship between the interior and the exterior
to bring more light and views to the refectory spaces
the project demonstrates how work on the existing building accompanies the repositioning of an ordinary programme
to reinterpret its uses and its programming
