Léa Curinier third in Chambéry
The women's field raced a challenging 119.4km
and Magnaldi attacked just before the final lap of the race and soloed to the finish line 1:18 ahead of lone chasers Mona Mitterwallner (Human Powered Health) and 2:33 ahead of third-placed Léa Curinier (FDJ-SUEZ)
Crossing the line more than three minutes back was the two-up sprint for fourth won by Barbara Malcotti (Human Powered Health)
and I’m really happy to be back winning
We wanted to make the race hard to try and drop our rivals
and that’s exactly what we did," Magnaldi said
and then I found the right moment to go solo and just kept pushing until the finish
I kept thinking I didn’t want to get caught – I really wanted this win.
"After finishing second and third in the past
I’d been chasing this win for a while – to repay the team’s trust and also for myself
It’s a great confidence boost for the upcoming races.”

Camille Costa de Beauregard will be beatified in the cathedral of Chambéry
Though this priest from Savoy never belonged to the Salesian Society of St
his cause for beatification was supported by the Department of Salesian Postulation
But what’s his connection to the Salesians of Don Bosco
the Salesians were invited to Chambéry to take charge of the Bocage orphanage—a home founded by Camille Costa de Beauregard
they inherited a house for a group of children
came to know the remarkable personality of this diocesan priest whose reputation for holiness had endured long after his death
Camille Costa de Beauregard was born in February 1841 into a noble Savoyard family
was a wealthy landowner and Grand Equerry (Grand Squire or Master of stables/royal household) to Charles Albert
opposing the secular policies of Cavour in the Turin Parliament and advocating for Savoy's annexation to a more religiously tolerant France in 1860
the Marquise de Vérac—descended from the noble Noailles family—was a strong-willed woman shaped by personal tragedies
She raised their children in a strict and deeply religious environment at their estate
the Château de La Motte-Servolex near Chambéry
Camille was the fifth of nine children and struggled academically
then entered boarding school at La Motte at age nine
followed by Jesuit schools in Belgium (Brugelette)
He eventually returned home to study with the Abbé Chenal
Drawn to worldly pleasures and always elegantly dressed
Camille went through a period of spiritual crisis
abandoning most religious practices—though he never stopped praying to Mary
Abbé Chenal accompanied him patiently through this phase
Camille was approached by two ragged boys asking for money
He gave them alms and returned to his carriage
his habits changed and his reading became more spiritual
he shed what he called “sweet tears” and felt called to dedicate his life entirely to God through the priesthood
he entered the French seminary in Rome in September 1863
His transition to a simpler life was difficult
and the austere clerical garb weighed heavily on him
Abbé Chenal gave him an image of St
“That’s how far you still have to go.” Camille took the message to heart
newly ordained and back in Chambéry
he asked the bishop for the humblest position—an unpaid
unlodged fourth vicar at the cathedral—so he could serve the working class
He also founded the “Saint Francis de Sales Mutual Aid Society” for workers
Camille welcomed some of them into his modest two-room apartment
Camille and Abbé Chenal moved there
This was the beginning of Camille’s life’s mission: serving orphans and abandoned children
tireless work with the young earned him widespread recognition for holiness—even among anti-clericals
Francis de Sales—“Nothing by force
everything through love”—closely aligned with Don Bosco’s approach
“People often asked me what system or special method we used to form our children this way
‘What’s your secret for educating young people so well?’ I answered
‘Our secret is very simple—it’s not complicated at all: we love them very much
and these good children understand that.’ It’s probably this love that helps us find the best way to reach their hearts and minds
Camille Costa de Beauregard lived a life of total self-gift—marked by boundless charity
a boy suffering from a severe eye injury was healed following a novena asking for Camille’s intercession
was recently recognized as a miracle—clearing the way for his beatification

Paris Saint-Germain Handball booked their place in the Coupe de France final with a demonstration of strength in their semi-final against Chambéry (39-27)
Take a look back on a wonderful evening at Coubertin
Our Parisians were on the verge of reaching the Coupe de France final
Even before thinking about getting their hands on the trophy again
Les Rouge et Bleu would have to be serious about beating Chambéry
who have not been doing too badly in this campaign
The Savoyards came to Coubertin without pressure
and for this reason the capital club had to take every precaution to make sure they reached the final against Montpellier
Paris were clear on one thingat the start of the match: the Savoyards must not be given any hope. While Les Rouge et Bleu were unstoppable in attack, Jannick Green continued his excellent form with two early saves (4': 3-1)
Although Chambéry were gradually getting into their game
they committed several technical fouls and twice went a man down before the ten-minute mark had been reached (9': 6-4)
Raul Gonzalez's men did not need to be asked twice
Léo Plantin and Elohim Prandi taking turns to increase the lead (12': 9-6)
The attacks rained down in the first quarter of an hour as Paris showed no mercy: Elo' had already scored four goals
Asier Antonio quickly called the first time-out of the match (15': 11-6)
but the changes did nothing to loosen Jannick's iron grip on the match; our goalkeeper continued to make save after save
Kamil and Elohim continued their ruthless scoring streak (19': 14-7) and soon Yahia Omar joined the party
and scored a splendid hat-trick to extend the capital club's lead (23': 17-8)
With their backs to the wall and no solution in sight
Chambéry committed one foul after another and were sanctioned with a third two-minute suspension
Paris then really broke free as Yahia scored his sixth goal of the evening (25': 20-10)
At the end of a first half controlled from start to finish
our Rouge et Bleu went into the dressing room with an eight-goal lead (30th: 21-13)
Raul Gonzalez decided to field three of his youngsters
Léo Plantin and Wallem Peleka all coming on alongside Dani Baijens
Gautier did not take long to seize his chance
scoring twice as Paris responded well to a strong spell from the visitors (37': 25-17)
Andreas Palicka marked his return in the best possible way
winning a duel before finding the back of the net in the ensuing action (42': 27-21)
Chambéry were quickly on the back foot once more
This was thanks not only to some excellent Parisian defending
who took his tally to nine goals (46': 30-21)
The Savoyards were clearly struggling at the end of the match and decided to call another time-out just as Léo Plantin had scored his third of the evening (50': 33-24)
Raul Gonzalez took advantage of this stoppage in play to bring on a new youngster in Noa Narcisse
The young left-back picked up hwere his predecessor had left off
continuing Paris's scoring spree (54': 37-26)
Paris put on a high-level show against Chambéry this evening
as evidenced by the thirteen different goal scorers
the capital club secured its ticket for the Coupe de France final (60': 39-27)
The Parisians will meet Montpellier at the AccorArena on 18 May
with the sole intention of winning the seventh Coupe de France in their history
Les Rouge et Bleu will have several important fixtures

Uruguay were the pick of South American teams on Saturday
An inspired Los Teros gave Japan a fright in Chambéry
The South American no 2 held a 20-18 lead in the second-half before ultimately falling to a 36-20 defeat against the Asia no 1
Scrum-half Santiago Álvarez made a snipe before passing around the back of a Japanese defender
Manuel Diana latched on to the pass and scored under the posts
Álvarez converted the try for a 7-0 lead after as many minutes
quick recycled ball over four phases saw former captain Kazuki Himeno over for a try
Takuro Matsunaga’s conversion was no good as the ball fell off the tee during his run-up
On 19 minutes Japan were penalized for pushing Bautista Basso in the air
Álvarez landed the straight-forward attempt from in front to end the opening quarter scoring Los Teros holding a 10-5 lead
Early on in the second quarter Uruguay were pinged for being in front of the kicker
Japan turned down a regulation shot at goal to kick for the corner
Recycled phases saw left winger Junta Hamano scoring down the right wing
it was not to be as referee Christophe Ridley and TMO Tual Trainini ruled a forward pass
Japan remained caped deep in Uruguayan territory and came away with points
Takuro Matsunaga landed a penalty on 26 minutes
Japan punished a loose Uruguayan lineout to run 80 meters and score after three phases
There was time left for a third first-half Japanese try
Kanji Shimokawa shot through to score untouched
Fly half Takuro Matsunaga again made a mess out of the conversion
This time he missed a simple attempt from close to the left of the posts
An aerial collision between scrum-halves Santiago Álvarez and Naoto Saito saw the Japanese player yellow carded
Álvarez slotted a penalty for an 18-13 half-time deficit
Uruguay were on fire early on in the second-half
Sharp passes saw Manuel Diana making a clean line-break
Stopped fifteen meters short of the try zone
support came from Álvarez who darted through before passing inside to Lucas Bianchi who scored
Álvarez converted for a 20-18 Uruguayan lead
winger Jone Naikabula scored in the left corner
Uruguay attacked in each of a response but Japan held them out
Japan won an attacking penalty which Saito landed to extend the lead to six points
Japan appeared to be in trouble with fourteen minutes left in the contest
Warner Dearns was red carded for head contact on Guillermo Pujadas
as Japan overcame the one-man disadvantage with Saito kicking two penalties
Trailing 29-20 with three minutes remaining Uruguay won a penalty and attacked with a maul from a lineout
Fakawata pulled the ball loose from an advancing maul
Japan passed right with Australian-product Dylan Riley scoring 80 meters upfield
Both teams now travel in different directions. Japan take-on England next Sunday in London. Uruguay face Romania in Bucharest on Saturday. Japan will be looking to extend England’s losing streak while Uruguay are in search of their first win since the World Cup

Toni Bou claimed the win at X-Trial Chambéry with an exemplary display in an all-Spanish Grand Final
Gabriel Marcelli and Adam Raga finished in that order behind him
The scorelines alone highlight just how comfortable this win was for Bou; he totalled 6
Whereas Bou successfully completed the toughest Sections One
Three and Five with just four dropped marks
giving him victory with two rides to spare
“I am very happy with the win but most of all the way I got it,” Bou said
“I needed a win like this today – dominating the Final from start to finish – after what happened in Madrid
Winning like this is a real confidence boost
We have done a good job and I thank my team for that.”
the fight for second place at X-Trial Chambéry provided the entertainment in the Final
Jaime Busto put in an excellent damage limitation ride after finishing Q1 down in fifth place
bouncing back with P1 in Q2 to join the podium fight
and then beating Gabriel Marcelli by a single mark
but Busto’s superior result there gave him a slender advantage
Second place here and victory at X-Trial Madrid last month mean Busto remains tied on points with Toni Bou at 35 apiece
“I am disappointed with my riding today,” Busto lamented
“In Q1 I strained my arm and it was tough from there
I did manage to recover a bit and things got better
So I am happy to have finished second and I’m looking forward to next week.”
which is important because I didn’t feel good at all in Madrid
and even though I could have avoided a couple of mistakes
I am happy with third and finishing only a mark from second.”
Marcelli reflected on his strong performance after securing a podium finish in France
achieving his goal of returning to the Top 3
It was a good weekend and I want to thank the team for their work,” the Spaniard said
remains third in the Standings as the only other rider with two Grand Final appearances
Raga was unable to make an impression on the Final
Home hero Benoit Bincaz missed out on qualification by just a single mark in Q1 and with the last ride of Q2 against Jaime Busto
The three least experienced riders on show were cut somewhat adrift
but debutant Lorenzo Gandola showed well in the opening two sections of Q1 to take sixth
Hugo Dufrese marked his return to the series with seventh and will hope for better next week in Clermont-Ferrand
Harry Hemingway put in a strong Q2 and was close in several places around the Q1 course but came home eighth
Marcelli is in fourth place with 18 points
Round three of the 2025 World Championship is X-Trial Clermont-Ferrand which takes place this coming Friday 17th January
Few objects have been at the heart of as much debate as the Shroud of Turin
it was the subject of controversy between its Champagne owners and the Bishop of Troyes
when its veneration as a relic of the Passion was instituted in Chambéry
He mocked the dozen or so shrines claiming to possess Christ's funerary linen
before it was defended by a wealth of Catholic scholarship
Its renewed fame in 1898, thanks to a photographic negative revealing the imprint of Christ's face, sparked new discussions about how the image could have been formed. The Shroud's carbon-14 dating results in 1988
which suggested it originated in the Middle Ages
The permanence of this object in history has few rivals
The same applies to the extent of the literature devoted to it over the centuries
sometimes based on polemics against relics
and sometimes on the physical sciences or forensic medicine
historians sometimes work against the grain on the most high-profile issues
The Shroud was long shunned by academic history
and since the 1980s and 90s it has been absent from summaries of the history of Christianity and numerous works devoted to relics
it was by ignoring the question of objects of worship that researchers highlighted their importance in Christian societies
they risked being brought back to this fateful question
To cite just a few, there are the municipal deliberations of the town of Chambéry, where the Shroud was venerated in the 16th century before being transported to Turin. They contain a multitude of measures taken to accommodate the crowds of worshippers who came to see the relic, such as repairing bridges, guarding gates, regulating prices, policing to prevent petty theft and crowd movements.
In 2011, a draft of a speech to the Duke was rediscovered on a loose leaf in the Savoy Archives. While a plague epidemic had prompted the Duke to suspend the annual viewing of the Shroud, the municipality urged him to maintain the rituals, citing the influx of worshippers, the growing power of Lutheranism in the region, and the relic's expected miraculous efficacy.
The great devotion paid to this famous shroud is far from an isolated case.
The great devotion paid to this famous shroud is far from an isolated case. In a Christendom overflowing with relics, Cadouin, Compiègne, Kornelimünster, the Lateran in Rome, and many other shrines — in all, more than 130 — claimed to venerate a cloth or a piece of cloth that had wrapped Christ in the tomb.
Added to this were the numerous copies of the Shroud of Turin. Some were shown to the faithful so that they could show their devotion, from a distance, to the Savoyard prototype. Others were venerated as authentic relics, like the Shroud of Besançon, which enjoyed prominent veneration until its destruction during the Revolution.
Philosopher Bruno Latour and artist Adam Lowe note that, while many adventurers have sought out the sources of the Nile, the river's wealth lies precisely in the extent of the watershed that they leave behind. A similar inversion of perspective has led to an increasing number of discoveries about the Shroud, and new sources are bound to emerge in the years to come. They document how generations of devotees have looked at the same object, at every stage of its long history.

Paris Saint-Germain handball turned in a masterful display on Sunday
Here's our look back at the Liqui Moly StarLigue Matchday 11 encounter
With just a few days to go before a long-awaited return to Coubertin in front of their home fans
Les Rouge et Bleu knew they would have to give everything they had to maintain their lead over their pursuers
Paris began the match very much on the front foot
Les Rouge et Bleus' wingers were the first to shine
with goals from Mathieu Grébille and Ferran Solé Sala (3': 1-2)
Faced with a particularly compact Savoyard defence
the Parisians had to work hard to find a solution in the middle
Gautier Loredon stepped up to the plate and put the capital club back in front (7': 3-4)
Raul Gonzalez's men took full advantage of Chambéry's defensive lapses to score penalties
scoring one goal after the other to work the crowd into a frenzy (13': 7-7)
Les Rouge et Bleu responded to the home side's attacks
and it was Yahia Omar in particular who provided the entertainment in this first period
Between Jannick Green's saves and Chambéry's wavering attacks
Paris didn't hesitate in attackand extended their lead
thanks in particular to Ferran's fifth goal
whose foray behind the defence gave Valentin Kieffer no chance (19': 9-12)
the Savoyards called their first time-out to try and close the gap
The stoppage in play had the desired effect for Chambéry
who made up part of their deficit (23': 13-14)
Les Rouge et Bleu were a little off the pace at the end of the first half and copped three quick temporary exclusions
allowing the home side to take the lead (25': 15-14)
Raul Gonzalez was proactive and decided to call his men back to make some valuable tactical adjustments
the capital club were attacking with seven men and were back in the lead thanks to Yahia Omar and Jacob Holm (27': 15-16)
Paris went into the break with a narrow one-goal lead (30': 17-18)

Paris attacked with their foot to the floor and took advantage of another Savoyard turnover to increase their lead (32': 17-20)
Les Rouge et Bleu were also imperious in defence
winning his penalty duel with Benjamin Richert
Buoyed by Jacob and Yahia (who scored his seventh goal of the evening)
the capital club took off and forced Asier Antonio to stop the game prematurely in the second period (37': 18-23)
Les Rouge et Bleu made perfect use of the wings abandoned by the compact Chambéry defence and took off (42': 21-27)
Ferran maintained his perfect record by converting his tenth attempt
It was a performance that not only broke his record for the season
but also took him past the historic milestone of 800 league goals

The former capital of the House of Savoy has something to suit all tastes
Anne says—”endless outdoor activities in the surrounding mountain ranges and lakes
“Chambéry may not be the bustling city everyone wants to live in,” she says
it represents the best of both a large city and a calm village.” Here are a few of Anne’s favorite things about the place she’s proud to call home
When someone comes to visit me, the first place I take them is to Chateau des Ducs de Savoie
I’m obsessed with the fact that there’s a real-life castle that was once the seat of the House of Savoy in Chambéry
Winter is the best time to visit my city because the biggest draw to the region is definitely ski season
Spring and summer are also good times to come
La Piste Verte is the place to buy authentic, local souvenirs. My picks: a handcrafted Opinel knife and beautiful trail maps
earns the runner-up spot for its beautiful architecture
Though the museum is currently closed for renovations
access to the associated cloister remains open
If there’s one thing you should know about getting around my city
it’s that rental bikes are extremely inexpensive and the region is full of bike trails just waiting to be explored
The best place to spend time outdoors in my city is on pedestrian-friendly Place Saint-Lèger or in Parc du Buisson Rond
from Disney cartoons to Hitchcock marathons
You can tell if someone is from my city if they’re sporting a ski-goggle tan (i.e
the bottom half of their face is disproportionately tan)
Just outside my city, you can visit France’s largest natural lake, Lac du Bourget, and dozens of ski resorts and spa towns. Plus, many of the area’s loveliest cities—Lyon, Annecy
Grenoble—are less than an hour’s train ride away
My city is known for being a bit conservative and boring
but it’s really full of opportunities for adventure
especially if you’re willing to get up close and personal with nature
The best outdoor market in my city is the grande braderie
a twice-annual street market that overtakes the city center
When I’m feeling cash-strapped, I take a book and a demi-baguette to Parc du Verney
I visit the serene Jacob-Bellecombette waterfalls
A Carnival parade that refuses to be stymied by hours of heavy snowfall could only happen in my city
In the spring you should walk up to Les Charmettes to check out the blooming flowers in Rousseau’s garden
In the summer you should cool off in the lake or rent a kayak or paddle boat in neighboring Aix-Les-Bains
In the fall you should hike to the Bec du Corbeau to see the mountainsides covered in fiery colored foliage
In the winter you should refuel after a full day of skiing with some warm raclette at Le Sporting
If you have kids (or are a kid at heart), you won’t want to miss the Galerie Eureka
a small science discovery museum with highly interactive exhibits located below the library
a city of approximately 60,000 residents in southeastern France

On my London-Paris-Chambéry-Turin-Bari-Tirana journey over land and sea
It took a while to adapt to having so much time to simply watch the world go by
travelling through landscapes without having to navigate them
The biggest stress happened long before I set off
when a landslide not far from the French border with Italy blocked the rail line between Chambéry and Turin
offered to reroute me through Nice and on to Turin via the Vermenagna valley (with changes in Tende and Cuneo)
or book me on the FlixBus service over part of the Mont Blanc massif

As I gushed about the romance of slow travel by train and sleeper ferry
I didn’t feel especially brave: all the planning
tickets and hotel bookings were done for me
and friendly help was a WhatsApp call away if needed
I just had to download the Rail Planner app for my Interrail pass and make sure I was at the right station at the right time (Turin was the biggest challenge: it has four main railway stations and taxis scream between them bearing anxious-looking passengers)

where I make a beeline for a cafe opposite the station
Noise pervades the pavement tables of Café Terminus
but the cacophony is delightful – an atmospheric place for a citron pressé
I’m in plenty of time for the train to Chambéry and, excitingly, am on the upper deck. Soon, we break free from the suburbs to trace huge stands of forest. Beyond Lyon begins a ripple of hills, lazy rivers and thickly forested slopes. As evening approaches, it’s all Alpine scenery. I arrive at an almost-empty station and walk to the boutique Hotel des Princes in Chambéry’s old town
Chambéry has an Italian feel – it was the seat of the House of Savoy before the dynasty moved on to Turin – and its medieval alleys
cathedral and pastel-coloured townhouses are quietly impressive
The 1838 Fontaine des Éléphants sits in the middle of the closest square to the old town
and peeking from the end of every street are the Bauges and Chartreuse mountain ranges

Beach bars whip by and cypress trees are replaced with palm trees: I’ve arrived in the south of Italy
heat and energy as we step off the train in the early evening are joyous

The labyrinthine alleyways of the whitewashed old town are almost cliched in their cuteness

In the early morning I spot a pink sky through the cracked window of my comfy en suite cabin
and head to the top deck to see the sun rise over the distant outline of Albania
Disembarking in the port of Durrës is a bit of a scrum and there’s a bus to the capital waiting
but I opt instead for a five-minute taxi ride to the centre of town and breakfast of pastries and espresso on a dazzling white road lined with boutiques and palm trees
as the aircon on the grubby public bus I eventually take to Tirana is more tired than I am
and drops me in an urban sprawl miles from the centre
which stands as a symbol and monument to change (and is fun to climb at sunset)
Skanderbeg Square – a jumble of buildings erected on a roundabout at the time of the celebrations to mark the fall of communism in 1992 – is now a pedestrianised
of course – the Bunk’Art and Bunk’Art 2 museums
in nuclear bunkers are unmissable – but Tirana and the country are more than just the last century
but it feels like Tirana is just getting into its stride

— A woman was pulled from her burning home Tuesday afternoon after a neighbor used a tractor to tear through a wall to get to her
The woman is identified as 67-year-old Cynthia Chambery
She died Tuesday at Strong Hospital following the incident
Her husband was in the garage when the fire broke out
Neighbor Jeff Tanner asked him if he could break down the wall with his tractor
"So I started with the window and tried to break the wall down
I took the one wall out," Tanner said
"And I asked where the bed was and the bed was right up against that wall
So then I used a maul to break that down and peel that out – took the nightstand out and I used my phone – I didn’t have a flashlight – I used my phone – and I could see her laying there."
He grabbed the woman and two other individuals who arrived on the scene pulled her out and brought her to some nearby trees for safety
With ammunition exploding inside the structure
Tanner says he and a police officer pulled her away to the safety of some nearby trees
13WHAM's Doug Emblidge asked him what was going through his mind
It was fully engulfed in smoke but no flames yet
There was no pulse but the EMS showed up perfect timing and started working on her right away," he said
While Tanner says he was just being a good neighbor
first responders on the scene says what he did was nothing short of amazing

After a couple of fun nights at the Bulgari Hotel Milan, we were off to Courchevel, France
The easiest way to get there was to take the train from Milan
In this case we took Trenitalia executive class
and oh my gosh this was by far my best train experience ever
This was every bit as enjoyable as a great international first class flight
I’m going to make a point of seeking out this experience in the future
The train ride from Milan to Chambery takes around 3.5 hours
This is part of the Milan to Paris train route (which takes around seven hours)
There are a variety of pricing options (prices in the screenshots below are for two people):
Obviously executive class is a lot more expensive than business class
but the experience is also totally different
Rather than being in a cabin with dozens of other people
you’re instead in a cabin with a total of just 10 seats (and a conference room!)
Our train was departing from Milano Centrale (Milan’s main train station) at 6:25AM
We remembered how huge the station was on arrival from Venice
Milan’s train station is an architectural masterpiece
which first required going through a temperature check
Unfortunately the track for our train wasn’t yet listed
There wasn’t a whole lot going on at the station at the time. While there’s the Freccia Lounge that we’d in theory have access to
unfortunately it wasn’t yet open for the morning
So instead we did some train spotting (I assume that’s a thing
I don’t know the first thing about trains
which is Italy’s private rail operator
At around 6:10AM the departure track was posted for our train
since that didn’t happen on the last train
Is that because this is an international train (even if it’s within the European Union)
We were seated in the very first car (at the end of the track)
and as we walked there I popped my head into the different classes
The standard cabin looked reasonably comfortable
Then the business class cabin looked even nicer, and was in a 1-2 configuration, similar to what we had on our ride from Venice to Milan
Then finally we arrived at the first car… are you ready for this?
maybe I’m just a little too excited…
The executive class cabin has just 10 seats
In so many ways this reminded me of an old international first class cabin
as that’s what was available at the time that we booked
Not only are the seats as such quite large
but they feature an endless amount of legroom
The seats have a swiveling feature whereby they can be turned in either direction
The exception is if you’re seated in the first row
where you can only be faced toward the other seats
Ideally if you’re traveling with someone you’ll want to select seats behind one another (like 1A & 2A) so you can face one another if you’d like
as the people in 2A & 3A plus the people in 2D & 3D were traveling together
That meant no one was facing us in the first row
While the seat doesn’t go fully flat
Seat functions can be controlled via a panel to the side of the seat
The swiveling feature can be controlled by a button at the opposite side of the seat
Underneath the seat and to the side were AC and USB power outlets
plus an exposed storage area where you could place a laptop or other item
much like what you’d find on an airplane
Luggage could be stored in the overhead racks
or otherwise could be placed in the conference room
Wait, a conference room?! Yep, the executive class car has a conference room with seating for five, available for guests. I find this to be such a hilarious feature, given that there will be at most 10 passengers. Just for fun I ended up sitting here for a while with my laptop, because why wouldn’t I?! It almost reminded me of “The Lobby” on the Etihad A380
The executive class car also had a private bathroom
which is a nice feature when you consider how much use the other bathrooms on trains generally get
There was even a pretty swanky galley in the executive class car
The executive class car initially had six passengers
The executive class car had a friendly attendant who introduced herself shortly after boarding
About 15 minutes after departure she brought out some basic snacks
At that point the first beverage service was performed
I ordered an espresso and some water — the water came in a glass
while the espresso was served in a paper cup
We were then presented with the menu for the train journey
It was explained that we could order whatever we wanted (from the breakfast
This is pretty amazing — it’s like a dine on demand concept on an international flight
You can find the menu and drink list below
The attendant was great about keeping us hydrated
but we had room service breakfast at our hotel in the morning
Around 30 minutes before our arrival in Chambery I figured we had to take one for the team and order something
given that I had been up for so many hours
I decided to order the salmon and zucchini risotto
I was offered a bread basket to go along with it
This was even presented with proper cutlery
Ford ordered the couscous with chicken and vegetables
Let me once again emphasize that you can order whatever you want (including food
and it’s all included with an executive class ticket
which is easy to connect to and quite fast
we had excellent connectivity throughout the journey
There were overhead monitors constantly providing an updated status of our progress
and we arrived at Chambery right on schedule
It was snowing pretty hard when we arrived
which you wouldn’t usually expect for early April
Admittedly when it comes to transportation
I’m more of an aviation geek than anything else
and this might be my favorite train journey I’ve ever taken
in the sense that there’s little I enjoy more in life than sitting in a comfortable seat on my laptop and watching the world go by
If someone is looking after me and offering me unlimited coffee and water
in terms of being able to watch the world go by
And in many ways taking the train is so much better than flying — train stations are closer to city centers
you don’t have to deal with many of the hassles of airports
Even though the train from Milan to Paris takes seven hours
I’d absolutely take a train over flying in a heartbeat
and there’s no better “office” than something like this
While the premium for Trenitalia executive class is significant
this is such a fun way to travel to & from Italy
this is probably the least stressful and most enjoyable way I’ve gotten around Europe
Having now taken Trenitalia’s executive class
I’m viewing getting to & from Italy from other places in Europe in a completely different way
I’d gladly take a long journey in this cabin over flying
If you have the chance to experience Trenitalia’s executive class
If you’ve taken Trenitalia executive class
Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value"
Was the Executive Class Car wrapped in advertisement that covered the windows
We are looking to book Executive but read elsewhere that the advertising wraps on the Car obstruct the view out of the windows
Must be missing something here… I’m on my third Executive class trip over the last few weeks
The service has been extremely consistent… every single trip has had terrible service with cabin attendants who are miserable
On this trip from Roma Termini to Milano Centrale
she distributed menus but refuses to serve anything other than the snack items
We're doing Milan Paris in May and definitely doing executive class
I wonder if you might be able to help me with a question
I have booked executive class for Paris to Milan and return and booked seats 5A and 5D
Can these seats be rotated to face the direction of travel
I took the Frecciarossa from Rome to Bologna in business
For excellent and detailed info on train travel (worldwide) have a look at Seat61.com
the normal Business Class is so good and comfortable
that Executive Class does seem rather unnecessary
Especially when Business class is often only 10 to 20 Euro more than the basic fare
Are you too excited to take some pictures of the scenery along the way
Previous train article you said you’d review getting taxi to hotel in Milan in this review
In the last installment I said "I’ll talk more about the station in the installment about the ride out of Milan," so maybe that's what you're referring to
Getting a taxi at Milan's train station was pretty straightforward
There was a taxi stand outside with no wait
Well now that France is virtually outlawing flights of less than 2 hours
you might be tempted to travel and review more European trains
Sometimes it is just so much easier to travel by train which even in economy seem to have excellent facilities
Of course if one travels without the benefit of the local language it can be a little stress inducing but part of the fun but also important to remember not to..
Sometimes it is just so much easier to travel by train which even in economy seem to have excellent facilities
Of course if one travels without the benefit of the local language it can be a little stress inducing but part of the fun but also important to remember not to travel with any luggage other than what one can lift or keep an eye on at all times
And its never a good idea to get to the station too early as there is nowhere to sit these days (unless a restaurant of course) so get your ticket online and suss out the station in advance
France isn't banning flights less than 2 hours (all flights within metropolitan France are less than 2 hours)
its flights when there is a train equivalent of less than 2 hours
aka 15min to 30min flights on a few routes
Italo's president and founder is Luca Cordero di Montezemolo
The same rich and most active guy (he was also president of Alitalia for few years) was Ferrari's president from 1991 to 2014
Apart from the same dark red that the Ferraris currently racing in Formula 1 are painted with
"So instead we did some train spotting (I assume that’s a thing
Many mainline train stations in the UK are packed with train spotters at the weekend
Certainly my local train station has plenty
Railfans are at least as obsessed with trains
someone who has a borderline unhealthy interest in basically anything that helps move people and goods around)
I rode in Executive Class on the Frecciarossa 1000 between Milan and Rome
I'll admit it looks impressive on their website
Those recliner seats don't recline very far
The standard business class seats on the TGV from Paris to Milan were far..
The standard business class seats on the TGV from Paris to Milan were far more comfortable
They also kept the Executive Class carriage uncomfortably warm
I've used this train around a dozen times between Milano Centrale and Bologna or Florence (same train - which continues on to Roma and Naples)
Up to 1 hr-ish - I will sit in business class
ItaloTreno's compartments are the best of the best within Italy
High speed train travel in Italy is fantastic
Trenitalia and Italo are amongst the best train operators in the world
Italy is a pretty big (long) country but train is still by far the best way to get around
I can say we are always complaining about train service..
you should know here the police can stop anyone and ask for IDs
or rather the only reason is that a "check"
the Central Station was a very bad place until a few years ago
now we have a checkpoint before you get to the platforms
Maybe it was early and it wasn't active yet
so they decided to check passports at the platform to avoid thieves getting on and off before departure
I was using Milano Centrale as a base to do day trips by train to many cities in the region 2 weeks ago and security personnel never checked if people had tickets to get to the platforms in the 5 different occasions I had to take a train there (at different times each day)
the only place there was a ticket check to enter the platforms in my 2-week Italy trip..
take notes cause you're light years behind the rest of the planet and well never catch up
Ben: You might point out that Freccia is Italian for 'arrow" and trenItialia brands their service by different arrow colors: FrecciaRossa (Red Arrow) for their high speed service
They also offer Frecciargento and Frecciabianca trains that are somewhat slower and more economical
GBOAC: You might want to point out that the FrecciaRossa 1000 are the newest of the train stock
The conference room is not just extra space for your personal enjoyment
Typically such a room is intended for group meetings while traveling from one city to another and can be reserved in advance
At one point I recall Amtrak offering a conference room like this on one of their New York Washington trains
Ben never said it was for his personal enjoyment and pretty sure he knows what a conference room is intended for
Doesn't mean he can't use it if a group hasn't reserved it
try the Gran Class service if you are headed north of Tokyo
Also a significant premium over Green class and economy
but those seats were just the most comfortable I've ever been in
And of course top notch Japanese service and decent food
It really hurts when you compare all of that to Amtrak..
"Is that because this is an international train (even if it’s within the European Union)"
I believe these are the stupid things since the covid times
this will not have existed before covid times
On international train journeys passport control are not rare
As not all visas and residency permits are the same
Every time I take a train into Denmark they check my passport
I've traveled to Sweden from Denmark and I can tell you that passport checks are a common occurrence when crossing from Copenhagen to Malmo via train
you should really try the Eurostar between Paris and London: 2h15min from city center to city center
First class (called Business Premier) is quite expensive (315EUR one way
no discount for advance purchase or Saturday night stay) but the new lounge in Paris Gare du Nord is great (with a barman that makes great cocktails!) and the food onboard is decent
Add to that the idea of travelling by train under..
Add to that the idea of travelling by train under the Channel
but the Eurostar is really the best way to travel between the 2 capitals
I have taken the italo from Venice to Milan several times in Executive Class
The service is sketchy...one trip has a cabin attendant so lazy that he didn't come around until we were most of the way to Milano
I prefer the old Treinitalia first class seats that were more comfortable
The food is a joke and most Italians would be sick just seeing how it's served
but there are few places in Italy that can mess that up
and Switzerland's Glacier Express are really
The Italian Ferrovia used to be reasonable priced and reasonable quality across the classes
have destroyed the overall quality by catering to high paying elites
but I use them less and less because I see these services are being provided at the detriment of ordinary second class and business traveller with whom I regularly speak...and now more often travel
Great that they mark GF options on their menu and even have GF Peroni
Intuitively I wouldn't have thought that Italy would be the easiest place to travel GF
but they're actually much more GF-friendly than many of their European neighbors
With how high the gluten intake is in Italy mainly because of pasta
They have an above average rates of celiac's
The most comparable hard product I've had to a plane was on CRH in Business Class (which oddly is above first class)
Only train I have seen with lie flat seating
I wonder if the economics really support this class of service
Or is it a subsidized luxury from a state-owned company
kept in place with pressure from politically connected elites
The question makes me think of Thai's new First Class
I have taken ICE between Mannheim and Paris multiple times and the only check they have done was for tickets
It's such a huge disgrace that there are so many anti-train politicians in the US
packed train and the bathroom door wouldnt close properly and man camped on the toilet out the entire trip

the final installment of the Festival of Champions Series to benefit the Virginia Horse Center
started Wednesday and will run through Sunday
Florida rode her own Chambery 25 to the win in Wednesday’s $500 Open Jumper 1.30m
With a second round time allowed of 45 seconds
the pair was the only horse and rider team to go clear in a time of 31.317 seconds
LLC’s QI L had the fastest second round time in 30.696 seconds
but four jump faults saw them finish in second place
Smith also placed third with her own Nadav after earning four jump faults in their second round in a time of 32.343 seconds
placed fourth for their four-fault first round in a time of 74.367 seconds
well within the first round time allowed of 82 seconds.David Matisz of Wellington
Florida and Feelgood Farm’s Clearway’s Ashfire placed fifth for their four-fault first round in a time of 72.554 seconds and Marissa Degner of New Hill
rode Cece Winter’s Durango Z to a seventh place finish
De Michele kicked off opening day with a win in the $200 Open Jumper 1.20 m this afternoon in the Dee Dee Arena in the irons of Cantatu
LLC’s QI L besting a field of fifteen horse and rider teams over a course designed by Paul Jewell of Windsor
First to advance to a second round was Catano 29
owned by Emma Pell and ridden by David Matisz of Wellington
Their clear round in a time of 41.556 kicked off the horse race
in the irons of her own Izalco followed in the order and turned in a fault-free second round in a time of 36.182 seconds
The lead was short lived when Hayley Alcock of Philomont
Virginia aboard Nicole Perry’s Cadis 5 turned in back to back clear rounds with a second round time of 35.982 seconds
Virginia and Jeanne McCusker’s Imago Z followed Perry and Cadis 5
turning in double clear rounds with a second round time of 33.034 seconds
Maryland and her own Loose N Capable followed as the next pair to advance to a second round
Four jump faults in a time of 34.091 seconds would see the pair finish in ninth place
Virginia and Mackensie Bowles’ Lando Van De Oude Molenhoeve also earned four jump faults in their second round and their time of 34.760 seconds would see them finish in tenth place
Virginia and her own Hirette KR followed Kemper in the order and their clear second round of 35.290 earned them a fourth place ribbon
the next to advance to a second round opportunity was Joe Fargis of Middleburg
Virginia in the irons of Tracey Weinberg’s Honolulu III
fast second round and their time of 32.656 seconds took the lead
The lead was fleeting after De Michele Cantatu
posting double clear rounds with a second round time of 31.056 seconds
Virginia and Gail Thompson’s Doirin Clover Boy sat in the enviable last to go spot
but their second round time of 36.443 could not catch the lead and they would finish seventh overall
victorious and Fargis and Honolulu III in second place
“I rode with Joe [Fargis] for a long time and I really appreciate him.”
Imago Z and Jackson Schurtz finished in third place and Hayley Alcock rode Cadis 5 to a fifth place finish
“I have a mare that I was unable to jump a lot because she got hurt about six months after I got her and so I decided to breed her,” she explained
“I bred her twice before and I ended up with two very quiet hunters and I sold them
I decided to try it one more time and bred her to Quincy Car [owned by Fernando Cardenas] and while QI L is very pretty
last year was a bust; I showed him maybe twice at Swan Lake last year and maybe the Piedmont Jumper Classic
He did his first 1.30m at Swan Lake this winter
and then I showed him at WEC in Ocala in the 7-year-old jumpers and was champion his second week we were there
he has a lot of personality and he thinks he is amazing,” laughed De Michele
“I never had a horse who is as completely sure of himself like him
Right now I’m looking at him as my Grand Prix prospect
I hope in a couple of years he’ll be able to do the Grand Prix
I want him to have the opportunity to figure it out.”

Greg Chambery literally grew up in the nursing home business
founded the Maplewood Nursing Home in 1945
The Chambery family lived in part of the nursing home when it was still in northwest Rochester
Chambery has a lifetime of experience with the facility
He’s learned a lot from a lot of residents over the years
this is the last place it’s told,” said Chambery
who bought the business from his father in 1998
“My kid loses a cell phone and it’s a calamity
I’ve met so many people in this profession that I never would have had the chance to meet.”
The Maplewood Nursing Home first opened at the corner of Lake Avenue and Seneca Parkway
That’s in the Maplewood neighborhood of Rochester
The facility moved to Daniel Drive in Webster in 1974
when Medicare and Medicaid rules forced changes
The Webster home started with 24 private and 24 semi-private rooms
the place has 74 beds and all are in private rooms
Expansions over the years have added a lot of “public” space
places where residents can get out of their rooms and socialize
Services offered at the Maplewood include 24-hour orthopedic rehab care and minivan transportation that can be specialized for each resident
“We have a very individualized approach,” Chambery said
“If you don’t find 12 people who want to go to the same place at the same time
take you to your children’s backyard for a party
Or maybe you’ve always met the guys for lunch at (a local restaurant)
We individualize the experience for people so they can enjoy the things that they’ve always enjoyed.”
Chambery stressed that the Maplewood would not be able to do so without its volunteers
A lot has changed in nursing care since his father and grandfather were in charge
it’s not my father’s business anymore,” he said with a laugh
“He couldn’t stand all the regulations that we have now
I spend half of my time studying regulations.”
his father was stumped about then-modern technology like a fax machine and wondered why it was needed
technology has evolved to all of the Maplewood’s medical records being kept electronically and prescriptions being bar-coded to facilitate orders with the pharmacy
Changes in various regulations have shortened the average length of stay in nursing homes from seven to 10 years to about 700 days
About 80 percent of the costs are now picked up by Medicaid
Maplewood Nursing Home was named to the Democrat and Chronicle’s “Top Workplaces” list this year
recognition that Chambery said means a lot
a philosophy that gets handed down — treat people how you want to be treated and listen to people,” he said

Located near other religious communities, the sisters of St. Joseph of Chambery could place their frail elderly sisters with these organizations. Read more in our retirement series here
At one time the American province of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambery
an international order with a presence on five continents
had sisters ministering in states from the far north (Alaska) to the deep South (Alabama)
while some are still working with poor people living in California
the question of how best to care for their retired elderly sisters at the West Hartford
While the international order has approximately 1,800 sisters in 18 countries
in the United States the median age of West Hartford sisters is 80
with the youngest member 49 and the eldest 101
there are 103 sisters in the United States province
“We had an infirmary, not licensed, just for our sisters, without any Medicare reimbursement,” said Cunningham. A National Religious Retirement Office grant provided the province with a consultant who advised them that the time had come to close the sick bay – and move the sisters to skilled nursing facilities
The sisters were sent to the skilled care units along with prayers and a quilt hand-crafted by one of the sisters
so that they would have a material memento of their convent life
Each former convent resident has a sister who acts as an advocate and visits her every week
For the most part they have gotten exceptional care
At the same time that they were deciding to close the sick bay
the West Hartford community had also determined that while they had to sell their 10.5-acre property
they wished to continue to reside on the grounds
Most of the building will be developed into apartments/condominiums
The sisters will remain in a convent of 36 renovated rooms
24 of them available for members who can live semi-independently with some services from nursing aides
to know what you think is going to take a short time
“We’ve been fortunate to see signs of God in it all.”
is office space – and even that may become available in a local parish
has also produced another lesson – that sisters from one order who have already experienced change can lend a hand to those experiencing it
“Maybe at one time everyone did their own thing and were private” she said
“Now it’s ‘how can I help you?’ That’s another good thing that has come out of this.”
the projected selling of the property and planned movement to a smaller residence
the security and financial stability of the community will continue to improve
