the walls in the center of the town of Chateau-Gontier in the Pays de la Loire region Authorities have launched an investigation into the Islamophobic and racist attacks French Interior Minister Browse here. My parents and sisters, together with a few other displaced Jews, were placed under enforced residence in Château-Gontier. Eventually, other members of my father’s family came to this town, 13 souls in all. They were subject to curfew, had to wear the Star of David, and the adults had to register daily, except for Sunday, at the German command centre. On the day my father was arrested, the kindergarten teacher for my two sisters, Mlle. Madeleine Counord, saw my mother, who was then five months pregnant with me, and she swore to herself that she would do everything in her power to save us. The Gestapo returned to attempt to arrest my mother when she was visibly pregnant, and my mother, sensing danger, called the midwife and the landlady. When confronted with two French witnesses, and the possibility of a childbirth in their Mercedes, the Gestapo withdrew, though they continued to keep tabs on her when she entered the maternity hospital. A short time after my mother gave birth to me, Madeleine arranged for our escape. She planned it for a Saturday night, knowing that there would be no registration on Sunday. She sent her 12-year-old niece, Monette, in the dark of the night to fetch my mother and me and take us to the house where both Madeleine and her elderly mother lived. My mother was disguised and was carrying me in a bag. Monette wordlessly took the bag and led us to the safety of her grandmother’s house. Madeleine had already spirited my sisters out of town, first placing them on a farm, then in a convent before moving them to Paris. At first I was placed in a home where there was another newborn so that a crying baby would not arouse suspicion. When the other baby became ill and a doctor had to visit, I was taken back to the Counord household until a safer hiding place could be found. In 1980 I was able to visit the members of the remarkable Christian family who risked life, limb and torture to save a mother and her three children. I met the midwife, Mlle. Gaillard, who delivered me. She told me that when the Gestapo interrogated her, she told them that Mme. Honig had been so desperate she had probably jumped into the Mayenne River with her children. And then she watched as they dredged the river for three days looking for bodies. There are many other personal stories regarding my family in the Holocaust, but perhaps the following might shed a bit more light as to the real meaning of genocide, a term that is so often bandied about in a mindless fashion. To me, on a very personal level, two of the incidents that I recorded above bracket and highlight the true meaning of the term genocide. 1) The labelling of a mother, her two young daughters and her infant son, me, as fugitives, and then hunting them down to the point of dredging a river to find their bodies. And 2), the meticulous recording of the place, date and time of death of my uncle, together with the cause of death, when Germany was close to defeat. These incidents have defied, and continue to defy, my imagination. A final note: Six members of the Counord-Gardon family have been designated by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations for their mind-bogglingly dangerous efforts over an extended period of time to save my family and me. There are others, including the Mother Superior, and my midwife, Mlle. Gaillard, who also deserve this honour, but for whom unfortunately, I do not have the necessary documentation for their induction. I should add that I am also personally indebted to the Canadian and other Allied soldiers who left hearth and home and crossed an ocean to save a continent and me.
