Twelve shots were fired in rapid succession during a fatal police shooting with a wrong-way driver in early April
according to newly released police body camera footage
who is heard in the video saying Hildal had a firearm
yells several times for her to put her hands up
as Union Township officers arrive and begin approaching the car
reviewed by The Enquirer after a public records request
is from four Union Township officers on the scene of the April 1 shooting
Officers and troopers had been trying to stop Hildal after a call came in about someone driving on the wrong side of the highway that night
After the trooper intentionally crashed his cruiser
only a short time passed as Union Township officers caught up and joined the scene before shots were fired
A Union Township officer asks the trooper if he's OK
still pointing his gun at Hildal and again asking her to show her hands
"She's got a gun in her hand," another officer yells as another shot is fired
The state's Bureau of Criminal Investigation
asked by the highway patrol to investigate the shooting
they say the trooper and woman exchanged shots with one another
yells out to Hildal as another officer calls in that she's non-responsive
Officers approach the car and make the decision to pull the cruiser away so they can get to the woman's car door
Hildal's SUV – still in drive − rolls forward
An officer fires several shots at its tires without warning
Officers let the car roll forward and it strikes the concrete barrier on the other side of the highway
Two dogs are seen in the car as authorities try to get in to get Hildal
One jumps out as they begin to pull her body from the car
They begin chest compressions and first responders arrive
but authorities say Hildal died of her injuries at the scene
The Blue Ash woman is seen wearing what appears to be a type of black tactical
possibly bulletproof vest and had a helmet nearby
a spokesman for the attorney general's office told The Enquirer

— It’s one of the busiest stretches of State Road 50 in the state and now state leaders are looking to find relief for those drivers making their way from Clermont in Lake County to Florida’s Turnpike in Orange County
Mary Anne Sherrod drives every couple of weeks to Orlando to get plaster for her pottery shop
“I used to hate it because you go to Orlando and all this traffic,” she said
“And now I go to Orlando and it's free as a bird and easy driving and then you come back toward Clermont and it's just backed up.”
Close to 60,000 cars travel on State Road 50 everyday between U.S
“There's only one main highway other than the turnpike that goes into Orlando and that's highway 50,” said Sherrod
Heading east in the morning and west in the afternoon
so much so the Florida Department of Transportation is now looking into a reliever road
“It'll be more of a streamlined road I think similar to other expressways like the turnpike
that kind of thing,” she told Spectrum News 13 as she drove on State Road 50
“More people would choose to take that route because they wouldn't stop like we are now at the traffic light here at Hancock Road and 50.”
FDOT began a study earlier this year for a reliever road between U.S
They’re currently analyzing the data to determine next steps
another main road into Orlando,” said Sherrod

communities aren't just complaining — they're taking action
Flour Bee Bakery in Williamsburg is aiming to take some of that financial burden from families
There was a line wrapped around the building for the grand opening this morning
"The opening of Flour Bee Bakery is just a sign of all the great things happening in our county right now," said Joy Lytle
WATCH: New bakery offers free meals to anyone in need
The aroma of fresh-baked goods fills the air at the new establishment
Beneath the sweetness lies a mission with deeper meaning
"This community is really rallying around and supporting those in need,” said Lytle
"We have several that are in need with that
so it's great that somebody's going to come in and help with that need," customer Shirley Ogden said
Lytle said the bakery's approach represents a growing movement across the region
"What you saw today is happening more and more and more," Lytle said
From organizations like Give Like a Mother
providing essentials from food to healthcare
"Things are expensive and even if you work sometimes
you need a little help," customer Bonnie Feichtner said
A percentage of the bakery's proceeds will go towards funding the Bee Fed Initiative sacks
"I'm excited to see them flourish and grow that initiative," Feichtner said
The initiative is just one way Williamsburg residents are stepping up to help eliminate financial stress for the community

bringing together young artists from both countries

This intercultural piece was performed in late April in French
incorporating a variety of performance styles such as documentary theater

Ohio (WKRC) — It's one thing to get an alert to check your doorbell camera and see somebody trying to break into cars
It's quite another when you look again and see that person is wearing a gorilla mask
Ryan Argo said that his Ring camera caught that visual outside his Amelia Park Drive home on Wednesday
"They were actually shaking our car doors trying to see if they were unlocked and trying to get into them," said Argo
they came back and checked my Cadillac again," said Argo
Argo said that he set his alarm off again and the suspects ran away
"One of them looked like he had a white ski mask
the other one was in a gorilla mask and had black gloves on
Argo said that his son's car mirror received some minor damage
"They took off running when we set the alarm off
and I guess with the chaos of the alarm going
they ran into it and bent it back," said Argo
The Clermont County Sheriff's Office said that they suspect that the three people in the video are teenagers
They said that another vehicle in the area did have damage to its rear window
The sheriff's office said a Facebook post indicated a door handle was also damaged
they told Local 12 that nothing appears to have been taken from vehicles in the area
The sheriff's office said that they are now setting up patrols in the area
"I think the deterrence and that factor alone will help," said Sierra Henline
After seeing the videos circulate on social media
Henline is beefing up security outside the home she lives in with her husband and three children
"We've had a camera for a while that we haven't put up outside of our house
My husband got a lovely text message this morning that said it was going up today," said Henline
A little added peace of mind for Henline and her family in an area she said has generally been safe
"This is definitely out of the norm," said Henline
is charged with aggravated murder in the death of a Hamilton County Sheriff's deputy
The Hamilton County Sheriff runs the county jail
Hinton is being held in the jail in Clermont County east of Cincinnati
Court documents listed his home in Middletown
“This was an agreement made between the Hamilton County sheriff’s office and Clermont County for what I was described as the defendant’s safety," Yates told The Enquirer
"They did not want to have any questions about him being held in Hamilton County as a matter of safety
because the officer had been a Hamilton County deputy sheriff.”
Messages to the Hamilton County Sheriff's office and Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey were not returned Saturday
Hinton was arraigned Saturday in Hamilton County
Dozens of Hamilton County Sheriff's deputies solemnly stood guard in the municipal courtroom
asked a sheriff's deputy if they had a safe environment in Clermont County and whether they'll return Hinton to Hamilton County on May 6 at 8:30 a.m
The deputy responded "yes" to both questions
Police say Hinton was the driver of the automobile that
fatally struck a Hamilton County Sheriff's deputy
The deputy was directing traffic ahead of commencement ceremonies at the University of Cincinnati
According to police, Hinton Jr. is the father of a man who was shot and killed by Cincinnati Police in East Price Hill on May 1
The fatal crash at UC came roughly two hours after the Hinton family reviewed police body camera footage of an officer shooting Hinton's 18-year-old son

Ohio — West Clermont Local Schools is proposing a combined earned income and property tax levy on the May ballot to fund a master facilities plan
but some residents are concerned about the financial burden
the levy includes a property tax of 1.76 mills
which would cost property owners $61.60 per year per $100,000 of appraised home value
generating approximately $3.9 million per year
the earned income tax is for .25% for every $50,000 of earned income
generating approximately $5 million per year for the district
This has raised significant concern among residents across the district
One resident in Pierce Township reached out to us after feeling there wasn't enough information about it to inform the community
saying 60% of her property tax already accounts for the school district
"We've got a lot of retirees here on fixed income
and we've also got a lot of young families
who also have a lot of expenses raising additional people," Sparks said
"It may force them to move out if you can't afford property taxes."
Pierce Township resident expresses concerns about upcoming school tax levy on the May 5 ballot:
Sparks said the levy is also a double hit for Pierce Township residents
The police department is also asking voters to approve a 2.9 mills levy on the same ballot
"I went online and did some research — actually
my neighbor and I have been going around the neighborhood and handing out flyers saying
West Clermont Superintendent Natasha Adams said this comes as the district struggles with overcrowding at schools and with an expectation that enrollment will pick up
the area is expected to have "2,700 plus new dwellings in the form of houses
and condos by 2030." Estimates show this will result in 1,351 new students in the district
the reality is that your home address determines what kind of learning environment you have," Adams said
and then some buildings that haven't really been addressed
And the biggest challenge that we have facing us is that our middle school is the largest middle school in the state of Ohio."
The Master Facilities Plan looks to house a fifth-sixth intermediate school and a seventh-eighth middle school on the current middle school campus
This would move fifth graders out of the elementary schools
The district says it would also allow the district to build a new elementary school and invest in current elementary buildings while making upgrades to safety
When meeting with the superintendent at Merwin Elementary School
she shared the building was built in the 60s and over time lost classroom space
Now some of the classrooms are outside of the main building in modular classrooms
there was once an asbestos outbreak due to broken floor tiles
But Sparks said financial burdens on residents have made it hard for people like herself to take care of basic needs around their homes
reassess what are their most basic needs right now and then maybe we could revisit this if it doesn't pass this year
maybe in the next year or two" Sparks said
When asked if the school district could delay its levy request
"One of the reasons we have urgency is the fact that we have predicted increased enrollment; we're already running out of space," Adams said
And so we propose a long-term solution instead of a short-term solution
We also have on the table right now a partnership with the Ohio Facilities Commission; they are funding 20% of this facility project — that's money we can't pass up."
The district has 16 months to show up with local share
The fifth through eighth grade building won't open until 2029
and the current kindergartners will be the first class of fifth graders in the building
Adams said waiting would make the project more expensive
"We have a website that's specifically related to bond information
There is a chart on there so that people can look at their income as well as their property values to figure out how this exactly impacts them
There are videos on finance that are short clips
We have built a statement of facts that we've shared
some of our one-pagers will be sent out in the mailboxes
so they will have that in their mail to really explain the entire story
And we continue to have town halls and opportunities at PTO meetings."
You can find that FAQ here. If you are a resident in West Clermont impacted by the levy, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at DeJah.Gross@wcpo.com

Authorities are investigating after human remains were discovered Saturday afternoon on a property in Washington Township
according to the Clermont County Sheriff's Office
Clermont County dispatchers received a 911 call just before 3 p.m. from the owner of a property on Barger Road, who reported that the remains had been found, the sheriff's office said in a news release Sunday
The property owner said they'd given a neighbor permission to search for mushrooms on their land and the neighbor stumbled upon several bones that appeared human
Deputies arrived a short time later and confirmed the discovery before securing the scene for a more detailed search
adding that search teams arrived Sunday morning to assist investigators with a "comprehensive search" of the area
A pathologist with the Hamilton County Coroner's Office was also sent to the scene to distinguish any human remains from animal bones
Any additional human bones will be sent to the coroner's office crime lab in Blue Ash for identification
The investigation remains ongoing and officials have yet to say whether foul play is believed to have contributed to the person's death
The University of Cincinnati’s regional colleges — UC Blue Ash and UC Clermont — have each received prestigious national recognition through the newly established Student Access and Earnings Classification
announced today by the Carnegie Foundation and the American Council on Education
Both colleges have been named Opportunity Colleges and Universities
a distinction awarded to institutions that serve as national models for advancing student success
This recognition highlights colleges that enroll students reflective of their communities and whose graduates achieve strong earnings outcomes compared to regional peers

only 479 institutions — representing approximately 16% of U.S
colleges and universities — were honored with the Opportunity designation under this new classification system
“This notable recognition reflects the unwavering dedication of our faculty and staff to continuously meet students wherever they are in their academic journeys,” said UC Clermont Dean Jeff Bauer
providing pathways to opportunity will always be at the heart of our missions
faculty and staff should be proud of this accomplishment.”
The Student Access and Earnings Classification utilizes a multidimensional approach to compare student access and earnings across institutions with similar missions and student populations
based on the 2025 Institutional Classification framework

Ohio (WKRC) - A suspect in a shooting near the University of Cincinnati was arrested Tuesday
According to the Clermont County Sheriff's Office
18-year-old Victor Canton was arrested at an apartment complex on Culver Court in Pierce Township
Authorities said Canton's arrest came after police received a tip Tuesday regarding a wanted subject at the complex
officers discovered an abandoned vehicle with apparent damage from a bullet
Pierce Township police contacted the Cincinnati Police Department
which confirmed it was investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday at 3 a.m
The teenage victim suffered at least one gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital
Investigators reportedly found multiple shell casings on the ground in the area
with police believing the suspect(s) left in a white Audi or Mercedes
The agencies worked together to determine which apartment Canton was staying in
and a search warrant was executed Tuesday afternoon
Canton was taken into custody on a charge of felonious assault
He was later turned over to the Cincinnati Police Department
The University of Cincinnati Clermont College’s Manufacturing Engineering Technology program will soon prepare students for the real world more than ever — through a new cooperative education requirement for those entering the program in fall 2025
The program will place students in semester-long
paid internship roles to gain on-the-job experience with local employers
“This new program will help bring the skills learned in class to life and help students gain advanced footing in their careers now and in the future,” said UC Clermont’s Manufacturing Engineering Technology Coordinator Doug McPhillips
“Hands-on experience is critical in manufacturing because employers need graduates who can hit the ground running — those who not only understand the concepts but can also operate equipment
interpret technical drawings and solve real-world problems on a manufacturing floor.”
The college’s Manufacturing Engineering Technology program prepares students for a variety of positions within the manufacturing sector
Students gain specialized education in manufacturing processes — lean manufacturing
computer-integrated manufacturing and robotics
“We have a combination of a great facility
strong curriculum and good relationships with industry leaders in the area,” McPhillips said
Top employers for UC Clermont graduates include Milacron
“Manufacturing is a broad field and offers tremendous opportunity right now
Students graduate and get hired quickly with the large demand for skilled workers.”
UC Clermont Manufacturing Engineering Technology Professor Doug McPhilips (left) works with student Dorca Torres Figueroa in the college's robotics lab
The associate degree program prepares graduates to be hired immediately as machinists
detailers and inspectors for engineering firms
who graduates in May with her manufacturing technology associate degree
hopes to find her professional path right away
Figueroa said her love of design started in a CAD class in high school
but life as a full-time working mother of two left little time to pursue her passion
When she decided to continue her education
an engineer cousin helped her find UC Clermont’s program
The degree appealed to Figueroa because of its flexibility and hybrid structure that combines in-class
she found even more to recommend the program
“I work in the morning and could attend class in the evening and online,” Figueroa said
“The small class sizes made it easier to interact in the hands-on classes
And the instructors take their time to offer one-on-one help; they really try to get to know their students.”
Figueroa found that the program deepened her enjoyment of design — and she feels prepared to succeed in the field from day one
“I love working little by little to create something out of nothing,” said Figueroa
I have options once I graduate for whatever I want to do for a job.”
In addition to the two-year manufacturing engineering associate degree
the college offers a certificate in Computer-aided Manufacturing
providing valuable training for a career in the manufacturing industries or allowing students to stack credentials toward an associate degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology
Students get hands-on experience in UC Clermont’s state-of- the-art computer numerical control labs while also completing coursework online

Ohio — An eighth grader at West Clermont Middle School was arrested after the sheriff's office said they threatened to "shoot up the school" on Snapchat
The Clermont County Sheriff's Office said the school's administrators were notified of a student's threat at around 3 p.m
The administrators contacted the school resource officer (SRO)
who noted the student was already on their way home when the threat was reported
Sheriff's office detectives began investigating the claim
interviewing a 13-year-old eighth grader accused of both threatening to school up on the school and personally threatening three other students while on the bus
The teen said he made the threat because he was angry another student had been suspended earlier that day and had no intention of shooting anyone
His family also confirmed he has no access to weapons
The student was charged with three counts of aggravated menacing
He was taken to the Clermont County Juvenile Detention Center and suspended from school pending further disciplinary processes
Ohio (WKRC) - Another law enforcement agency has released body cam video showing the moments leading up to a fatal officer involved shooting in Clermont County
Now we're getting an even closer look from the Ohio State Highway Patrol
officers from both agencies responded to southbound I-275 after several calls to 911 for reports of a wrong-way driver
OSP troopers encountered a Ford Escape that was driving northbound on southbound I-275 near the SR 32 exit
That's when one trooper used his cruiser to pin the Escape against the median
that trooper notices the woman is holding what appears to be a gun
He repeatedly shouts at her to keep her hands visible and outside the vehicle
That woman was later identified as Kelsey Hildal
Medics attempted to render first aid on the scene but Hildal did not survive
The Bureau of Criminal Investigations is handling the case
It will then go to the Clermont County Prosecutor's Office to determine if the use of deadly force was justified

Ohio — The Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health Services is awarding a Clermont County Municipal Court Judge with the 2025 Champions of Hope award this week
Champions of Hope is given by the nonprofit to community leaders whose
"vision and commitment help improve opportunities and outcomes for those who struggle with mental illness
substance abuse disorder and homelessness."
Judge Anita Bechmann is the administrative judge of the county’s municipal court where she presides over specialized cases involving mental health issues and violations for operating a vehicle while impaired
Bechmann started the mental health docket in 2023
“Judge Bechmann brings a vision and personal passion to the work,” said Alicia Fine
chief program officer and senior vice president for GCBHS in Clermont County
“She challenged us to come together with new strategies to build a new approach.”
Those sentenced from Bechmann’s specialized dockets receive help from service teams and clinical leaders from Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health Services
when she became the first female judge in Clermont County Municipal Court history
Bechmann was elected to the balance on the unexpired term in 2023
Bechmann graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1992 with her law degree and received her undergraduate degree from the College of Mount Saint Joseph
She will receive the award at a gala on April 25.
Kurtsty Ayers loved watching war movies as a kid — and found her eyes always drawn to the good guys
“Being the one to step up and handle situations that most people wouldn’t want to.”
Ayers told herself that if she didn’t have a career path by age 21
she would follow her childhood passion and enroll in the military
After graduating from Cincinnati’s Western Hills High School and spending some rudderless time in community college
she kept her self-promise and joined the Army National Guard in 2010
Six years of service and a 10-month deployment to Afghanistan later
She welcomed a son and began working for the Hamilton County Justice Center as a corrections officer
Ayers knew that earning a peace officer certification would expand her career opportunities in the field
She applied to the University of Cincinnati Clermont College Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy in 2020
The academy is one of several criminal justice offerings by the college
in addition to associate degrees focused on corrections and law enforcement
Ayers found a relaxed environment and knowledgeable and supportive peers and instructors
which allowed her to work throughout the program
When Ayers tore her calf muscle in the middle of the program
and other faculty and students were understanding — even showing up to cheer Ayres on when she had to complete her physical fitness test alone
Instructors stay in contact still to see how I’m doing
UC Clermont Police Academy Commander Bill Dunkman shares a similar path to Ayers — he started his career with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office in 1979 after receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S
After 34 years in the field working as both an officer and traffic crash reconstructionist
He said Ayers’s grit grew during her time in the academy
I noticed that she became more determined and driven,” Dunkman said
she did an excellent job when it came to critical thinking and working out solutions to complex problems
While Ayers thought she would continue as a corrections officer
hearing her instructors’ experiences led her to seek a career as a police officer
After graduating with her certificate in 2021
Ayers landed a job with the Forest Park Police Department
Thanks to UC Clermont’s balanced program mix of classroom and hands-on training
she says she felt prepared to work as an officer on day one
She even plans to complete training to become a peace officer training instructor herself
Ayers is aware that just as she watched her heroes in military movies growing up
another set of young eyes is on her now — and her son
has served as motivation through every step of her journey
“My son thinks it’s awesome that mom is a police officer; he tells people,” Ayers said
“I hope that he sees in me to be confident in yourself and go for whatever you want to go for

CLERMONT
– Central Florida is facing its worst drought in almost a decade
with extreme conditions taking a toll on farms and communities across the region
watering times have tripled to ensure the plants are getting enough water
This has become the new normal as team members work overtime to protect the crops and the business
More than half of Florida is now experiencing drought-like conditions, with burn bans in effect across numerous counties
the prolonged dry spell is more than just a weather headline
it’s a daily struggle to keep fruit and flowers healthy and stress-free
we try to water the best we can early in the morning
so it doesn’t evaporate real quick because that’s when the plants want it,” said David Hill
“But we’re finding we have to turn the water on three times a day because it’s so dry
and the plants need to get through the stress.”
Southern Hill Farms is one of the few farms that can rely on both a drip irrigation and reclaimed water system
keeping crops alive has required extra effort
Workers have been closely monitoring soil sensors and weather stations
adjusting irrigation schedules to combat the relentless dryness
While the drought poses challenges for growers
said the lack of rain has made it easier to enjoy outdoor activities
“I could drive an hour to Clermont and not have to worry about an hour drive back home in the rain,” Smisek said
“I just went in the pool yesterday and then sat out in the sun
it’s already 4 o’clock and it hasn’t rained yet.’”
The drought has also increased the risk of brush fires
which sometimes flare up as close as across the street from the farm
“You have the stress of worrying about the land around you because normally you don’t have a fire on your land if you have irrigation
you can have a fire at the drop of a hat,” Hill said
it leaves Florida’s natural green lush at risk
I’ve never seen something so green burn so fast,” Smisek said

Construction is nearly complete for a new town hall building in the Town of Clermont
Clermont Mayor James Nix says town officials have been operating out of the current town hall building on King Street near since 2013
He said it has several deficiencies that led to the decision to build a new facility
"It's a smaller building and not set up and organized as an office for a town hall nearly as well as what we think we're getting now with the new one," Nix said
"We don't even have an extra room to have a meeting in if someone wants to come in and meet with me or one of the council members."
254) next to the Clermont Historical Society and the Chattahoochee Center, will be just under 3,000 square feet
who was first elected as Clermont mayor in 2005
"It's hard to compare the place that we're working out of now and the new one
The new facility is being built at a cost of around $900,000
being built by Clermont-based Scroggs & Grizzle Contracting
It's being paid for by SPLOST and American Rescue Plan Act dollars
Nix said while the exact completion date is uncertain
they are hopeful the new facility will be ready within the next month
Construction on the project began in December of 2024
While not even 3,000 square feet may not sound like a large building
Nix said it will be more than sufficient for the small town staff
Census listed Clermont's population at just over 1,000 people
We've got a clerk and the assistant clerk that work out of it
and then there will actually be a place that the mayor and some of the council members can have an office that they could use," Nix said
Nix said a ribbon-cutting is planned to be held
but there is no set date for it at this point until a completion date is known
