we look back at the second of two previous editions staged in the French capital
the 19th IOC Session was historic for a number of reasons
not least because it saw the award of not one but two editions of the Olympic Games
as Paris and Amsterdam were named the host cities of the 1924 and 1928 Games respectively
one that nothing could stop the IOC from making
even though it had never been done before.”
The return of the Summer Games to Coubertin’s home city was the source of great personal satisfaction
Paris 1924 represented a poignant swansong for the IOC founder
as just a year later he would step down from his position as president
The Olympic Games Paris 1924 ran from 4 May to 27 July
with the heart of the action being Colombes
all of the athletes stayed at an Olympic Village
the Village comprised portable wooden houses complete with running water
Formerly a racecourse that had in 1907 been converted into an arena hosting athletics
rugby and football (when it was known as the “Stade du Matin”)
the Olympic Stadium was completely refurbished for the 1924 Games
with its capacity also being increased to 45,000
As well as hosting the Opening and Closing Ceremonies
it was also the venue for the track and field
A new aquatics stadium and tennis courts were also built in the vicinity of the stadium
The Velodrome de Vincennes was the venue for cycling
while the equestrian events were held at the Hippodrome d’Auteuil
The swimming events took place at the Piscine des Tourelles
which housed the first ever 50m Olympic pool
where the rowing and canoeing competitions took place
the latter being added to the programme as a demonstration sport
3,089 athletes (135 of them women) competed in 126 events in 17 sports
figures that reflected the growth of the Games in the intervening four-year cycle
The event's rising popularity was confirmed by the presence of more than 1,000 journalists
some of whom covered the Games on the radio
the first time the Olympics had been broadcast on the airwaves
It was also at Paris 1924 that the Olympic Art Competition reached its peak
architecture and music and also celebrating sport and Olympism
the competition boasted an illustrious jury that included Jean Giraudoux and Paul Claudel from the literary world
the composers Maurice Ravel and Bela Bartok
The winner of three golds and a silver at Antwerp 1920
Nurmi achieved a remarkable double in Colombes on 10 July
winning the 1500m and 5,000m within 55 minutes of each other
Nurmi went on to win gold in the individual and team cross-country and the 3,000m team race to finish as the most successful athlete of the 1924 Games with five gold medals
who was also part of victorious Finnish cross-country and 3,000m team
also finished as runner-up to Nurmi in the 5,000m and the individual cross-country
while adding individual golds in the 10,000m and 3,000m steeplechase
Their friendship and achievements inspired the 1981 film Chariots of Fire
including best Original Music Score for Vangelis
Weissmuller went on to win 400m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle relay gold
and he also turned out for the USA’s water polo team
He continued his Olympic career at Amsterdam 1928 before embarking on a successful movie career in which he went on to star as Tarzan in a dozen films
with the USA beating France 17-3 in the final
much to the disappointment of a capacity crowd at the Stade de Colombes
Andrade went on to retain their Olympic title in 1928
and starred once again as the Uruguayans won the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930
while a solemn tribute was paid to Pierre de Coubertin on 23 June to mark the 30th anniversary of the birth of the modern Olympic Games
The Closing Ceremony on 27 July saw an innovation that has since become an iconic Olympic tradition
with three flags being raised: the Olympic flag and the flags of the current and future host nations
Aside from attracting a large number of reporters and being the first Games to be broadcast over the radio
Paris 1924 also proved a success with the public
with a total of 625,000 spectators turning out to watch the events
Another venue still in use is the Piscine des Tourelles
which has been renamed the Piscine Georges-Vallerey
it now has a retractable roof and is used by the people of Paris for a variety of aquatic sports
In his introduction to the Official Report of the Olympic Games Paris 1924
the secretary general of the Organising Committee
wrote of how far the Olympic Movement had come since the inaugural Olympic Congress in 1894
I am once again called here to enjoy the intense experience of the Games of the VIII Olympiad… Is this unanimity not
proof that the Olympic Games now play a prominent role in relations between nations?” he said
“In bringing young people from every country together
they help foster this sense of cordiality that teaches men to become acquainted with each other better first and then to hold each other in higher esteem
a process that the Paris Games will have greatly aided
thanks to the sheer number of people they attract.”
These words still resonate almost a century later
as Paris readies itself to welcome the Olympic Games for the third time
Political activist Colombe Cahen-Salvador argued that the United Nations impacts everyone
and argued for reforms to help the institution tackle global problems like climate change as part of the Stanley P
Stone Distinguished Lecture Series at the College of General Studies on Feb
inviting the CGS and BU community to broaden their educational experience
Transforming the United Nations to Confront the Climate Crisis
focused on the role individuals can and should have in the organization’s future
I want to show you that the United Nations is actually about you
it’s something that will impact your life…It will shape it
and it will determine whether you have a healthy future,” Cahen-Salvador said
“So in turn the question is whether you want to shape it
whether you want to get power in order to ensure that the United Nations leaves you a world that is worth living in
whether the great powers of this world want it or not,” she added
Cahen-Salvador is doing her own part to help shape the future of the United Nations
She is currently running to be the next UN Secretary-General
a global movement uniting people for humanity’s survival
She said she is running to push the organization to change its status quo so that it can better meet the challenges facing the world
“I think that if we mobilize enough people
they will be left with no choice but to actually try to change the United Nations
to enable people like you to take power,” she said
she focused on climate change as a classic example of a problem that could not be solved without global cooperation
“While impacts of global challenges like climate are local
they cannot be solved at the local level only,” she said
“You absolutely need global cooperation to stop the worst from happening.”
In light of the United States’ recent withdrawal from the Paris Agreement
an international treaty that aimed to combat climate change
Cahen-Salvador recommended a two-pronged approach to continue the fight – that other countries take action to fund the climate transition
and that the UN undergo reforms to better equip it to handle problems of this scale
She recommended making the UN more democratic to earn people’s trust
and creating accountability mechanisms to give it the power it needs to create change
“We need a United Nations that actually functions
While she acknowledged that the organization is far from perfect
Cahen-Salvador remained hopeful that it could be reformed
and insisted that it was necessary to work to do so
“I think that the UN is a dream worth fighting for,” she said
She challenged students to take action in their own lives to push the UN to better serve the world
and recommended joining protest movements as a key source of action

In the family of Japanese gardens in the Ile-de-France region
I call on the City of Colombes in Hauts-de-Seine (92)
This pretty park was renovated in 2017 at the request of local residents
who wanted to have a square conducive to conviviality and encounters
It took 6 months of work to bring this Japanese-style garden to life
the 3,800 m2 garden is harmonious and soothing
Among the star plants often found in Japanese gardens
magnolias and other characteristic pruned trees and pines
a red bridge and a river complete the Japanese decor
A small play area based on Japanese garden codes is also on the menu for children in search of fun
if you're looking for a pretty Japanese garden on a human scale

which makes balance its distinctive feature
already stands out to the eye and then gives the right degree of bite on tasting
One is struck by the punctuality with which the various scents emerge clearly
from the toasting of the dried fruit to the genuineness of the cereal
capable in turn of sharing the scene with the lively citric notes of the crumb (in addition to candied orange
the mouth remains clean and free of greasiness
a symptom of the precision work on the balance of the various components
We are talking about the rest of one of the best pastry shops in Italy
particularly known to the Roman public for thematic reviews inspired by the contemporary artistic galaxy
at Christmas and Easter celebrations the place becomes an authentic exhibition space to expand the gastronomic discourse; this is confirmed by the recent Exhibition “The Abstract Reality of Manga,” focused on the dialogue between storytelling and drawing
The result is as many chocolate sculptures such as
recreating the characters of Satoshi Tajiri (you can admire them at the venue until April 19)
we also point out the black cherry in syrup and poppy seed
embellished with modern decorations instead of the typical lattice of pastry on the surface
from milk chocolate and passion fruit to the caramel edition (28€)
pasticceriawaltermusco.it
which had already convinced us in December with the Pansucchio
a very pleasant alcoholic variant of the great Easter yeast
Thus Caribbean rum returns to give the dough a particular roundness and envelopment
which at the same time does not undermine the background hints of vanilla bean (enhanced
precisely by the nuances of the distillate)
with extra dark chocolate and excellent candied chestnuts; the sweetness diffused
as befits desserts with important fillings
but at the same time mitigated by the lively pungency of cocoa
an elastic body and a tourbillon of fragrances ranging from the peppery hints of citrus to the immediate comfort of Piedmontese butter: Luca Pezzetta's colomba is an institution in Lazio (and beyond)
thanks to the precision work conducted by a solid team at the “leavened headquarters” in Fiumicino
They include the pizzeria Clementina (a multifaceted sign that actually winks at catering)
Micro Forno and the recently opened Ippolito
Returning to the Easter product-strong with three doughs and three leavening cycles
for a 48-hour confectionery workout-the distinguishing feature remains the pleasantly moist crumb
ready to melt in the mouth without leaving behind any residual fattiness
The impression is that of a taste that is rich in the bite and elegant in the aftertaste
the dual presence of Calabrian oranges and bitter orange jam from Sicily to scent the crumb
also included in the icing along with Viterbo hazelnut powder; total coverage that honors the olfactory depth of the dried fruit
A harmonious background of Bourbon vanilla bean completes the “bouquet.” The classic colomba (priced at €40) lends itself well to becoming a cadeaux

Available for purchase at Luca Pezzetta's Micro Forno, Pizzeria Clementina, Ippolito and on the online shop
We have already told you how Diego Vitagliano gives pizza the nuances of complexity of the Neapolitan pastiera
transforming the slice into a true end to a meal
there is much more to say about the young dough ace's Easter desserts: first of all
the pastiera can be purchased in a classic version (from the genuine filling of unsifted wheat
plus sheep's milk ricotta and the fragrance of Neroli oil
obtained from bitter orange blossom); then
the colombe are distinguished by their honeycombed structure and particularly silky to the touch
give the crumb the typical appeal of a baked product rather than that of a “baroque” dessert
generous but always calibrated in the degree of sweetness
Diego churns out a product with 3 cycles of sourdough refreshment and almost 24 hours of “resting” the dough pre-baking
The ingredients favor top-notch homegrown companies
from Made in Sicily candied oranges to acacia honey
subject to an excellent butter from beyond the Alps
that with Lemon Costa D'Amalfi IGP and chocolate of different types
to which is added a savory new entry: the truffle colomba -same recipe
but “Sugar free”- with truffle butter and truffle flakes

On the strength of a futuristic system for product research and related distribution abroad (we tell you about it here)
the Olivieri brothers churn out a personal and recognizable colomba
which reconciles the family knowledge of the historic Arzignano sign with constant technological investment
What strikes first of all is the bright yellow dough
airy to the touch and melting in the mouth
which already at first glance reveals the higher percentage of egg yolks used (four times the standard quota required by the specifications)
with pleasant aromas of biscuit and warm milk
starting from the dome of greatest intensity and gradually arriving to the light crumb
derived from the processing of freshly milked milk
while the Bourbon vanilla bean arrives discreetly
without overpowering the natural expression of the grain and the well-managed mother
Storability (the dessert remains moist for several days after being unwrapped) and sugars in the ranks

100% Milanese and sumptuous to the eye: Marchesi offers a leavened cake with a harmonious body
both in its upward development and in the proportions between crust and filling
Crisp and generous are the candied Sicilian oranges
with a viscous fragrance that melds with that of pan brioche and caramel when cut; of note are the use of brown sugar and the 48-hour leavening time
which give the dessert the ideal lightness for an end-of-meal tasting
It can be ordered in sizes ranging from 1 to 3 kilograms
with the scenic option of handcrafted royal icing decoration (now a must for the sign) if you wish to purchase the 1.5-kg dessert
We also recommend the peach-filled version with persuasive notes of vanilla and honey and an almond coating; for chocolate lovers
there is the “special” with Venezuela 75% fondant
whose bitter boost contrasts the roundness of the semi-candied cherries

a good 18 percent candied oranges and vanilla rigorously processed from whole pods distinguish Perrotta's classic colomba
a symptom of judicious management of the sourdough
and the orange paste brings dynamism without detracting from the natural bakery scents
which already evoke the genuine idea of domestic baking when cut
This is a product that brings together the sweet tooth with lovers of signature desserts
Of great delicacy is the version filled with Apricot Pellecchiella del Vesuvio
while the Peach and Mango variant focuses on the intensity of fragrance
immediately bet on the excellences of the undergrowth-see chestnuts wood-dried on trellises and transformed into a variety of fine products
Today it leads the way in the creation of sweets
including precisely Antonio Giannotti's signature great leavened goods
which are striking for the sincerity of the inserts and the overall balance

along with the well-developed back: Mamm offers a colomba with impeccable texture
as evidenced by the “long” tear with relative soft impact
The icing is robust thanks to sugars and almonds of fair size; we also appreciated the “gentleness” of the candied fruit

Vincenzo Tiri's colomba is not just an Easter product
but the centerpiece of a tasting experience that celebrates attention to detail and indigenous ingredients
An emblematic example is the use ofArancia staccia lucana
present in a generous 25 percent in its candied form; in fact
this intensely scented citrus gives the cake a vibrant citrus note
But the real strength of Tiri's colomba lies in its slow and painstaking manufacturing processes
culminating in a record 72 hours of leavening
orchestrated from a 100-year-old “mother,” is what gives the dough an ethereal fluffiness-a veritable cloud of goodness
which create a pleasing and stimulating contrast to the softness inside
break down into a range of more complex aromas
Tiri's shop
The typical Easter cake welcomes a new blend of flavors thanks to the creative synergy between the renowned Brisa Bakery and the innovative Wilden Herbals
Their collaboration has resulted in this year's Colomba Botanica
an artisanal leavened cake that elevates organic and supply chain herbals from simple infusions to authentic ingredients
The choice of natural raw materials that make up the dessert is at the heart of its originality
fragrant verbena and candied lemon: each of these elements has been meticulously selected not only for its distinctive olfactory profile
but also for its inherent health properties
but because of the recent opening of the eponymous workshop led by Alessandro Comaschi and Giuseppe Spata
September 2024 saw the debut of PAC-Pasticceria Alessandro Comaschi
inaugurating its first Easter showcase with a trio of beautifully crafted colombe
We appreciated the traditional version for the harmony of the olfactory notes
from the freshness of Sicilian and Calabrian candied oranges to the fullness of butter
very present in the aftertaste for a 100% comfort tasting
kept in check to enhance the added ingredients
Comaschi employs flours from Molino Pasini and completes a 24-hour leavening cycle
churning out pure filled variants that aim straight for suspension appeal
This is demonstrated by the special entirely covered with a chocolate drizzle
or-for a bite enlivened by contrasts-the edition that leaves the scene to candied black cherries wrapped in crystalline sugar
to which the Agrimontana pistachio spread (obtained from Feudo di San Biagio dried fruit) gives the right degree of creaminess
thanks to the presence of a small jar included in the package

Easter takes on a profoundly ethical tinge in Lecce: behind the fragrance of the artisanal colombe signed “300mila” lies in fact a story of redemption and dignity
a project that transforms artisanal confectionery wisdom into a concrete path of social reintegration
located inside the city's former juvenile prison
some inmates of the Borgo San Nicola Prison
dedicate themselves with commitment to the production of high-quality Easter pastries
The cost is 38 euros for the traditional colomba and 40 for the chocolate one
A colomba that we recommend not only for Easter breakfast
but also as a dessert at the end of rich holiday lunches
fully enhances the facets of expression of the mother yeast “maison” and a candy to say the least exuberant
Fine-tuned with more than 48 hours of artisanal processing
the cake counts two doughs and satisfies even meals hostile to candied fruit
given the distribution of a “pandorata” variant totally devoid of inserts
the dough resists tearing by showing remarkable elasticity
even without heating the product before tasting
This is a result of the mastery of the Chifari family
which has been fomenting Palermo's gourmand galaxy for decades
from the three Signor Carbognano gelaterie/pastry shops to the Pizzeria (formerly Bistrot) Archestrato in Gela
traditional and Chocolate are purchased at the above-mentioned locations at a cost of €35
It is one of the oldest Milanese yeasts that gives life to the Martesana colomba
which uses a mother of more than half a century to offer a variety of “orthodox” or filled delights
which is particularly aesthetically appealing because of its coating of generously sized almonds and sugars
depending on the proper development of the product
which is characterized by numerous candied inserts with capillary distribution throughout the slice
The skilled pastry chefs heirs of Vincenzo Santoro also churn out the Milano version with figs
ideal for connoisseurs of gourmet desserts given the complexity of the “basket” of ingredients
La Colomba with tris citrus fruits and lactose-free butter
an inclusive edition with intense and varied aromas
and Frutti rossi e mandorle with a winning combo of currants, blackberries and raspberries, are absolute new entries
Prices range from 35 to 78 euros depending on size

One and a half years after the University announced its decision to discontinue its partnership with Starbucks, Cornell Dining revealed that La Colombe Coffee Roasters will replace Starbucks as the primary retail coffee vendor across campus beginning in the summer of 2025
This new vendor announcement follows the National Labor Relations Board ruling that Starbucks unlawfully punished Cornell students at its Ithaca locations who advocated for unionization
including denying some students leave over Cornell’s academic breaks during the unionization process
Following a unionization movement at the store, all three Ithaca Starbucks locations were shut down by May 2023
The purchasing team also assessed vendor business practices
pricing structures and equipment needs before choosing La Colombe as the vendor to replace Starbucks

Employees accuse the coffee company of union busting after workers ratified a contract in October
Workers at the West Loop La Colombe Coffee Roasters are alleging the cafe chain fired five baristas in retaliation for unionizing
which impacted La Columbe’s cafe along Randolph Restaurant Row
happened days before the Thanksgiving holiday
The firings wiped out nearly half of the staff at the cafe at 955 W
Randolph Street and come after four out of five Chicago La Colombe locations ratified their union contracts with United Food and Commercial Workers Local No
the baristas tell Eater they believe La Colombe engaged in union busting and employee intimidation
The former employees wished to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation
“Given the proximity to the ratification of the contract
it feels intimidating and it starts the relationship between this brand new bargaining until
this brand new union within this company on a really antagonistic foot,” says a barista involved in the union campaign
there’s concern that this kind of disciplinary approach could be repeated at other cafes who also voted to unionize and who had the contracts
Violators could face unfair labor practice charges
the baristas were shown videos of them working
the baristas were giving away free drip coffee to regular patrons
the company’s representatives questioned the baristas and took detailed notes
A barista tells Eater that when they were fired the following week and the company cited the footage as the reason for their termination
“They were essentially interrogation sessions,” the barista says
“We were misled to believe they were not disciplinary
there was no talking or discussing of the disciplinary process
They showed us camera footage of us giving away free drinks and dismissed us without info or context.”
Another barista says “The representative incorrectly dictated back what I was saying.”
Another fired employee says he never received any disciplinary actions or write-ups in the three years he had worked at the West Loop location
who had worked with the company for four years
says that under “old La Colombe culture” it was acceptable to give away free drinks occasionally and that the footage would not have warranted immediate termination
“We wanted to build a bond with our regulars so that they would keep coming back and we’d have a good customer service relationship,” the veteran employee says
“It’s very difficult to refuse homeless people or homeless children
And also sometimes it’s a de-escalation tactic because we’ve had very aggressive homeless people in the past.”
A spokesperson at La Colombe did not respond to Eater's specific questions about the nature of the meetings or terminations
“We cannot comment on confidential employee matters
we can say that we take our [company’s] values and policies including our Standards of Conduct seriously
holding all employees across all aspects of the company to the same established standards,” a La Colombe spokesperson writes in an email
“All employee matters are investigated thoroughly prior to any action being taken.”
But while Gold Coast was the first to vote
workers at the West Loop location say the three-year-long push to unionize in Chicago began on Randolph Street
“I think they specifically targeted our cafe because the people at our location were some of the more militant and more senior people,” a fired barista says
“Our cafe was seen as a problem more so than the others.”

With 50% less sugar than the average ready-to-drink flavored coffee (La Colombe comes in at 9-15g per 11 fl oz
compared to an average of 33g per 11 fl oz cited by the USDA) and a good source of fiber
Strawberry Mocha is now available at major retailers nationwide and can be purchased on La Colombe’s website until April 15
While “brewmances” are nothing new – with meet cutes and missed connections in coffee shops a staple in rom-coms – La Colombe is seeing more singles in their cafés for dates as Gen Z searches for authentic in-person connections
84% of more than 1.5 million daters (83% of Gen Z
85% of Millennials) on OkCupid said they love coffee dates via the app’s matching questions – and
a majority of respondents prefer a first date at a coffee shop over other locations
“Our seasonal Draft Latte drinks are always a hit and a great way to introduce new consumers to La Colombe
Limited-edition flavors tend to be most popular in fall and winter where flavor profiles are more defined
yet this is not exactly the peak of cold coffee season,” says Chobani + La Colombe’s Chief Innovation Officer
“We’re excited to lead the way in Spring seasonal flavors by bringing Strawberry Mocha
to consumers who want to enjoy an indulgent treat with less sugar
It tastes like a ripe strawberry dipped in chocolate.”
Toning down sweetness (CANS)This month sees the UK launch of CANS
an unsweetened carbonated soft drink range
On a mission to create a new ‘non-sweet’ category
the fledgling brand combines sparkling Alpine water with real fruit and effervescent bubbles
The brand, which first launched to market in the Czech Republic 15 months ago, has sold more than 1 million CANS to date. 2025 marks the entry into two new territories, the UK and the US, in a bid to secure sales of 8 million CANS before the end of the year.
CANS is the brainchild of three co-founders; Jaroslav Beck, Dominic Rice and Jan Rambousek who wanted to create an alternative to sweet drinks.
“Our goal is to reduce global over-consumption of sugar by rethinking simple things and making them right. Why do we drink so much sugar in the first place?” says Jaroslav Beck, co-founder, creator and main investor of CANS who previously successfully scaled his viral VR rhythm game “Beat Saber” which was acquired by Meta in 2019 as the best-selling VR game to-date.
“After the brilliant market launch in the Czech Republic in August 2023 with over 1 000 000 CANS already sold, which corresponds to a saving of 33 tonnes of sugar (equal to 8,250,000 sugar cubes) compared to conventional soft drinks, the launch in Slovakia and Germany followed in late 2024. Now the UK is the next step in CANS' mission to create and grow the best possible non-sweet drinks and with that fully establish the non-sweet category itself.”

New bottle format (CapriSun)Capri Sun is now available in a resealable bottle in the US, entering convenience stores with the new format.
The bottle features 12 oz of juice – the equivalent of two pouches – in the brand’s most popular flavors: Fruit Punch, Pacific Cooler and Strawberry Kiwi.
Capri Sun’s original pouch format sells more than six million pouches a day.
“Capri Sun has always been a childhood favorite,” said Kristina Hannant, director of marketing at Capri Sun. “The launch of Capri Sun Bottles underscores our commitment to innovation by introducing a new format that meets the evolving needs of today’s families on the go. This reflects our strategy to meet our consumers where they are while bringing the same taste and quality they love.”
Between 2020 and 2023, 76% of suggestions to the Capri Sun call center were requests for larger product sizes. Last year, the brand launched multi-serve jugs – the first innovation for over a decade.
Strawberry White Russian (Cutwater)US spirits-based canned cocktail brand, Cutwater, is introducing its new limited-time offering, Strawberry White Russian.
Crafted with Cutwater’s vodka and coffee cream liqueur, the Strawberry White Russian builds on the creamy decadence of the original White Russian, adding the natural sweetness and vibrant flavor of strawberries.
This new offering follows Cutwater fan-favorites White Russian and Peppermint White Russian. The drink can be enjoyed straight from the can or served with sliced strawberries, chocolate shavings, or even a pink sugar & freeze-dried strawberries rim.
Rockstar Punched Pineapple (PepsiCo)PepsiCo’s energy drink brand Rockstar has added two new tropically flavored innovations:
Rockstar Punched Pineapple and Rockstar Boom Piña Colada.
Punched Pineapple comes with 240mg of caffeine, and is available at grocery stores and convenience stores nationwide.
Meanwhile, Pina Colada brings whipped and blended dairy flavors combined with pina colada notes for a dessert-like beverage infused with 160mg of caffeine. It is available at grocery stores and convenience stores in select Western US states.

France — Yves du Manoir Stadium sits nondescriptly in what amounts to a northwestern suburb of France
tucked in a neighborhood among a grouping of 15-story working-class apartment buildings
It’s easy to imagine driving by and missing it completely
an awning lining one section of seating that might look familiar
On Saturday, bodies occasionally appeared on balconies of those neighborhood apartments, checking in on things. Everyone from the eighth floor upward has free peek-in Olympic tickets for the main field hockey venue at Yves du Manoir for the next two weeks
Several residents were out there at the start of the evening
seeing the French men’s team take on Germany
as the Germans piled on early in what would be an 8-2 win
Some version of a stadium has stood in this section of Colombes since the 1880s
What started as a race track grew to include seating
Stade du Matin was built in 1907 not for Olympic sports
It was expanded to 45,000 seats in the build-up to the 1924 Games
Yves du Manoir is the lone stadium or arena still in use for the 2024 Olympics
Field hockey is a markedly small sport in Olympic terms
It’s a game played primarily by men in some corners of the world and primarily by women in other corners (notably the United States)
Only those seeking out field hockey will see much
Walking outside the stadium Saturday, in casual conversation, those attending Day 1 of the Olympic field hockey competition had little awareness about what was in front of them — what looked like nothing more than a small, inornate, unimaginative venue. A few said it didn’t seem as grand as they expected, this being the Olympics and all
That little pitch out in Colombes is so much bigger than the rest in Paris
while looking like a scale model of those massive stadiums we’ll see for most of the 2024 Games
arguably deeper at the heart of the modern Olympics than anywhere else
DeHart Hubbard walked onto the track in Colombes after traveling to Paris in the bottom of a large ship that prohibited Black men from sitting anywhere other than the bowels
Hubbard was a dominant sprinter and long jumper at the University of Michigan
Olympic organizers did not want him to compete in all the races and field events he was qualified for
he wrote to his parents: “I’m going to do my best” to be the first African-American Olympic champion
He became the first African-American to win gold for the United States in an individual sport
Not only was he the greatest jumper of the pre-Jesse Owens era
decide who was the fastest man in the world
came to Colombes with a long history and a formidable task of competing against a pack of Americans capable of winning gold
The stage was set for a race that would stop time
learned the 100-meter heats were scheduled for a Sunday
So much so that it was the premise for the 1981 film “Chariots of Fire.”
All the indelible imagery of those moments — the pillars in the background
all as Vangelis’ score plays — that was what the original stadium in Colombes was like
What would come to be known as Yves Du Manoir Stadium
While he’s grown over time into a near-mythic figure in France
he was still a massively popular figure then
Which is why Paris was so devastated in the winter of 1928
Du Manoir set off on what was supposed to be the final test flight before earning his pilot’s license
it expanded to over 60,000 seats after World War II
For decades the stadium remained integral to Parisian sport until
the Parc des Princes opened as the city’s new stage
sections of seating gradually removed piece by piece
it evolved into the home of a French rugby team and a Ligue 1 football club
one side of seating and a familiar-looking awning
It’s under layers of surface-level renovations and next to an adjoining new building

Find out more about the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Village
In 1924, the Olympic village adjacent to the Yves-du-Manoir stadium consisted of 66 wooden barracks arranged on a 150 x 60-meter site. But the women were not housed there. They lived separately from the men until the 1956 Melbourne Games.
In 2024, the stadium's two grandstands will be supplemented by several temporary stands around the pitch. In all, 13,500 people will be able to watch the hockey games simultaneously!
In 1883, the site's first vocation was equestrian, with the Société des Courses de Colombes operating the 35-hectare site. For almost 20 years, the tracks hosted numerous flat, hurdle and steeplechase races.

the Philadelphia-based coffee brand La Colombe launched a collection of ready-to-drink draft lattes
which helps make them super creamy and easy to sip on
Aside from the convenience of having a can on hand at home
it's interesting to note that each latte contains 5 grams of dietary fiber and vitamin D3
Each drink also contains 6 grams of protein
The draft lattes are also good sources of potassium
an essential mineral that aids in fluid balance and nerve function
While these lattes are certainly not health drinks
and fiber are definitely a great way to start the day
which I sampled and ranked from worst to best
Since all of the drinks have very similar ingredients
I primarily judged the overall flavor and finish for each one
Some recommendations are based on firsthand impressions of promotional materials and products provided by the manufacturer
The triple draft latte is noticeably stronger than the double draft latte upon first sip — but not overwhelmingly so
The milk is present enough to mask the taste from the extra shot of espresso at first
This drink has 10 calories less than the double draft
The best part of this product is its convenience factor; it delivers quick and effective caffeine
the caffeine should last a little longer than plain joe
The triple draft latte only ranks low on this list because of its aftertaste. But if I'm being honest, I would drink this if I had a very long day ahead and needed an extra boost of caffeine in the morning beyond just one cup of coffee
especially when they're paired with some in-season fruit
While the caramel draft latte drink isn't bad by any means
I found the flavoring to be too overpowering for a coffee and way too decadent for a morning drink
The foaminess of the nitro cold brew was very pronounced in this drink
like it was somehow brought out by the flavor of the caramel
There was zero bitterness from the first to the last sip
and sweet coffee fans will probably rank this among their favorites
While the drink itself was the creamiest of the bunch
the caramel tasted more like a flavor additive
It didn't add the rich viscosity I thought it would
Perhaps it's best enjoyed on a sluggish afternoon when you want the immediate payoff of a sugary
Since its debut in 2003, the pumpkin spice latte has been a juggernaut for Starbucks. Naturally, after seeing the lasting success of the drink and its many variations, other popular coffee brands wanted to create their own to appease their loyal fan bases
There is a hint of sweet spice to this pumpkin spice draft latte
This can clocks in at 120 calories and 11 grams of sugar
It's slightly less sugary than the mocha and caramel draft lattes and contains the same amount of caffeine (100 milligrams)
It has the signature smoothness of the other La Colombe drinks
I believe this is due to the addition of pumpkin puree
I forgot I was drinking coffee for a moment
While this drink is not bad, it's not the one for me. If you're looking for an autumnal drink that favors spice over sweetness, opt for the smashing pumpkin cold brew from Gregorys Coffee or make your own pumpkin spice latte at home instead
I generally tend to avoid ordering most mochas
There's just something about the chocolate and caffeine combo that doesn't quite agree with me or my palate
so I had to take that into account when I tried this beverage
The cocoa added a richness to the taste as well as the mouthfeel
I chose to rank this beverage higher on the list than the pumpkin spice draft latte because I felt the cocoa enhanced the attack (a borrowed wine tasting term which describes the first sensation on the palate) better than the pumpkin or the caramel beverage
This was the first drink I tasted for the review
I would be happy drinking this variety every morning (and maybe in the afternoon as well)
I thought the double draft latte might take the top spot
but that was before I tried the top-ranked beverage
It has just the right amount of caffeine and calories to get you going without sacrificing taste
The quality of the coffee and milk are evident here
and it tastes like it came directly from a La Colombe café
adding this drink to your breakfast routine will give you a jolt
but it won't result in a terrible sugar and/or caffeine crash later on in the day
When I've purchased La Colombe cans in the past
The flavor may get a bad rap for being bland
but the taste of real vanilla bean is euphoric
The added sweetness from the vanilla isn't too strong; it doesn't mask the coffee flavor completely
but it does add an extra layer of softness that the double and triple draft lattes lack
It had a delightful amount of foam (though slightly less than the caramel flavor)
and I wasn't surprised at all when this drink came out on top
The vanilla draft latte contains the same amount of calories as the double draft latte, with 9 grams of sugar, and 100 milligrams of caffeine. This drink is so delicious and decadent without being over the top. I wonder how it would taste in a homemade espresso martini (my guess is pretty great)
I only sampled the La Colombe draft lattes that contain milk
which means I left out its other draft lattes with oat milk
I tried to sample the flavors in order of strength
I began with the double draft latte and then followed it with the triple draft
I started with vanilla latte for the flavored category
and finally ended with the most port-like of the group
taking three sips of each before moving on to the next one
I returned and tried my top picks yet again
I ranked them according to the overall taste

La Colombe says its new s’mores canned latte is “the perfect summer sip on-the-go” and fans agree
diving into the brand’s comments on Instagram to declare
“I need this immediately,” said one commenter as another proclaimed, “This looks so good!”
“Can't wait to try this out,” said a third as another commenter stated that “this would be life changing.”
Several fans chimed in to ask if there would be an oat milk version available, writing, “can you make an oat milk version please and thank you” and begging the brand to “drop oat milk lattes.”
While the commenters did not specify why they wanted a dairy-free option of the beverage, it should be noted that La Colombe’s canned lattes that are made with real milk contain lactase.
The enzyme, that helps people digest lactose, is the active ingredient in over-the-counter lactose intolerance supplements like Lactaid.

Unique Shaw drained a pair of 3-pointers early in the third quarter
and suddenly Kaneland’s lead over Sycamore
scoring the next 16 points to take control in a 65-46 win over the Spartans in an Interstate 8 battle Wednesday
so we knew we had to respond fast,” said Marshawn Cocroft
We just kept pushing and pushing and got out on that big old lead.”
It was a key early-season battle between two teams that entered with identical records
the 300th of coach Ernie Colombe’s career with both Kaneland boys and girls teams
But for a while it looked like Sycamore (5-2
Shaw’s back-to-back 3s tied things up at 37-37 with 5:55 left
Freddy Hassan had Kaneland back on top with a putback
The next seven points for the Knights all came from Sycamore turnovers
The Spartans ended up going 6:07 without points
getting a layup from Shaw to open the fourth to get within 53-39
“We were trying to get good looks,” Sycamore coach Franklin said
a little bit more physical than what was supposed to be allowed
They have so much length at the basket that it creates a lot of difficulties for us to get looks that are high percentage
So we were forced to be in a position where we were looking for 3s
The Knights have been in a lot of close games this year
They had to erase separate deficits of nine and 13 points for a 57-49 win
“We’ve had several halves here where we’ve maybe been down or tied or given up a lead and fought back,” Colombe said
“We’re seeing our guys are pretty resilient
and they’re a really good team with a bunch of good shooters
We knew that they were going to hit some shots
and we just wanted to keep working hard and try and slow them down.”
while Hassan was the only player in the game with more than four rebounds
Shaw and Isaiah Feuerbach finished with 11 points each to lead the Spartans
with Feuerbach chipping in four rebounds and five steals
Cocroft said shutting down Feuerbach was a focal point for the Knights
and the Spartans only managed 15 total points over the final two periods
Franklin said he liked how the Spartans battled in the loss despite the third-quarter slump
whether it’s body language or having any lapses,” Franklin said
“We have to play close to a perfect game to be in a spot to beat these guys with all the problems they present for us.”
Colombe picked up his 101st win with the boys program after winning 199 as head coach of the girls team between 2006-2019
The Knights have had back-to-back 20-win seasons
something they last achieved in 1975-76 and 1976-77
They have never had three straight 20-win seasons according to IHSA records
Colombe said the 300 wins is a testament to the players as well as the staff he’s had over the years
“I know how hard these kids have worked,” Colombe said
it’s all about the kids we’ve coached and the coaches we’re coaching with
It’s a great group of staff I’ve been blessed to work with that I would call friends

Colombe Schneck’s new book, Swimming in Paris: A Life in Three Stories (Penguin Press)
reflects on the French writer’s experiences with shame
In “Seventeen,” Schneck writes of the abortion she got at the titular age
“Friendship” memorializes a lifelong friend
“Swimming: A Love Story” focuses on an affair with a man named Gabriel
and shame become major themes as Schneck churns her memories into new tales
The writer is a great admirer of Proust and views her project not as memoir or autofiction per se
but as art made with the materials of her own life
Schneck previously worked as a broadcaster and has earned prizes from Académie Française
She has written eleven books of fiction and non-fiction
though this is the first to be translated into English
Cerisse Cohen How do you feel about introducing your stories to an English readership
and I didn’t have huge literary ambitions for them
who says that instinct should lead the writing
I felt I had to write “Friendship,” about this friend who passed away
People wouldn’t speak about her—they’re afraid of death
I wanted to write what she meant to my life: she was eleven when we met
Annie Ernaux gave an interview in a French daily
saying that because women are ashamed of their abortions
I wrote a version of “Seventeen,” which is about my abortion
and I wanted to write about something happy
then I’ll go swimming and think about something else
I’ve revised these stories with my publisher
Readers will put their own souls into the book
AC What’s the relationship between the three stories
CS I began reading Annie Ernaux when I was eighteen or nineteen
She wrote about the shame of seeing urine on her mother’s apron and the signs of poverty on her parents’ clothing
It took me years to understand what in my family could also be a source of shame
She didn’t grow up in the same world as me
She couldn’t say anything about what happened to her and her family during the war
she was in her room and couldn’t come out to speak to me or reach me
In “Friendship.” Héloïse has a family with a history they can speak about
I came from a family with no story they could speak of
In “Swimming,” you see it when my mother and Gabriel’s mother meet
That’s the beginning of our own story when we were fourteen years old
the women understand that they share the same shame and guilt
AC What’s the relationship between shame and fiction
CS My first book was inspired by a French magazine from the forties
It detailed how my grandfather was assassinated in 1949 by his lover
The newspapers thought my grandfather was gay
I found out about the whole thing through this old magazine
I was the first person in my family to try to understand what happened
It was a way to understand something about the missing
My conversation with my parents was always very cosseted
my mother said she had something to confess
I’m an obsessive researcher because of my family’s silence
I’ve found facts in the most mundane places: clothes
I wanted to root out and eradicate the shame
Shame is the only subject that matters in literature
AC In “Friendship,” the narrator imagines there’s a sociologist comparing her childhood home to that of her wealthier friend
CS The sociologist was a good tool for observation. There’s this idea in France that money and the bourgeoisie are disgusting
Money is disgusting because it comes less from entrepreneurship than from inheritance
“Bourgeois” suggests a materialistic woman thinking only about her shoes
you would never find an empathetic character from a bourgeois family
And I like to write about disturbing subjects ..
I went to a very particular school: liberal and not religious
a place where people put their children if they have social and intellectual ambitions for them
and have friends I’ve known since I was five
We wore specific shoes that were supposed to be better for you
Many of the shops I write about are closed now
Equally important are the books my parents read
They were excited by the Serbian writer Peter Handke
who represented something new and revolutionary in literature
There was a central contradiction in their lives: They were more left than “democrat,” and they believed in paying taxes to finance education and the health system
yet they had a little money in a Swiss bank
This contradiction is still very prominent in France
He loves the book and said that before he read it
he hadn’t realized there were these levels and differences
AC “Swimming” must have been challenging to write because you had to narrate a break-up when you set out to write about a happy relationship
I was making fiction then too: when you’re in love
Writing felt like a way to convince him to come back
And now I would say that I’m happy that it’s a good book and that the love story is over
AC “Seventeen” details your experiences many decades ago
you understand that the distance of the past doesn’t exist
Something that happened thirty years ago can be in your mind like it happened this morning
In “Seventeen,” there are things I don’t remember so precisely
but then I don’t remember some things that happened last week
The question of time and years isn’t meaningful when I’m writing
Someone told me I have a very Talmudic way of writing
though “truth” is very important in the U.S
I made the character of Gabriel such a kind and wonderful man
I try to recount everything as closely as what happened
I could say: “Colombe was doing this” or “was like that,” and it would be more accurate
My material is autobiographical: I use the story of my family and I make something of it

New York-based Confidant will create media campaigns to promote upcoming product launches as Chobani seeks to maximise the business potential of its $900m La Colombe acquisition
US dairy giant Chobani has appointed communications agency Confidant to build and manage high-profile marketing campaigns for its dairy alternative range and La Colombe specialty coffee business
As Brand and Lifestyle Communications Agency of Record
New York-based Confidant will lead media relations for the two brands
which it described as “category disruptors” in their respective industries
with a specific focus on consumer lifestyle
Confidant kicked off the partnership with a Love Over Lattes campaign in January 2025 to promote La Colombe’s limited-edition Draft Latte Strawberry Mocha range
The communications agency said its work will highlight the specialty coffee group’s “expertise in craft coffee”.
Chobani acquired La Colombe Coffee Roasters for $900m in December 2023
While the Pennsylvania-based specialty coffee roaster and 30-store café chain continues to operate as an independent entity
the tie-up enables La Colombe to utilise Chobani’s extensive distribution network
which comprises over 95,000 US retail locations
including major supermarket chains Walmart
La Colombe expanded its ready-to-drink (RTD) retail coffee range with new 11oz Draft Latte cans – the first product launch under Chobani’s leadership
Chobani said it planned to “rapidly accelerate” La Colombe’s share of the US RTD coffee market.
Confidant has created media campaigns for a number of prominent US brands
beverage group Diageo and fast-casual restaurant chain Shake Shack
Confidant is part of the Nostos Network marketing and advertising group.

not everyone agrees that the overhaul La Colombe did for its canned draft lattes
Redditors expressed disappointment after the 2024 relaunch
theorizing the brand changed the actual latte formula; other reactions in this vein seem geared at the Triple
Customer feedback on La Colombe's own site reveals frustration at a decrease in caffeine
as well as the different-seeming flavor that has that aftertaste we picked up on — reviews call this "undrinkable" and "disgusting."
Some buyers love how intense the coffee flavor is — perhaps if you're more used to and a fan of some bitterness
are also upset with what they detect is a recipe change
While some shoppers find the new Triple creamy and flavorful
others dislike its bitterness and caffeine decrease
La Colombe's Triple variety of canned draft lattes is far from the worst you can do when seeking a java fix in a jiffy
But it is indeed the worst compared to their other flavors — if you already bought Triple
try mixing it with sweeter Mocha or Vanilla to soften the bitterness

Analysis: Stade de Colombes is the only facility from 100 years ago that will host events at this summer's games in Paris
By Ruadhán Cooke, University of Galway
The opening ceremony of this year's Olympic Games will take place on the River Seine in the centre of the French capital. Paris previously hosted the second Games of the modern era on the fringes of the Universal Exhibition of 1900, and again in the summer of 1924

the nine-time Olympic champ you've probably never heard of
Paris still had no stadium suitable for an international event of this scale
Racing Club agreed to redevelop its facility and a state-of-the-art Olympic Stadium at Colombes was officially opened on May 4th 1924
United States vs France in 1924 Olympics rugby final
Although a number of events like art, rugby and football took place outside of the main window, the opening ceremony was held on Saturday
football and a number of demonstration events
Significant firsts for the Games were wireless radio broadcasts, an official closing ceremony and an athletes' village. In the aftermath, the stadium became France's de facto national stadium hosting rugby and football internationals, including the final of the 1938 FIFA World Cup
In 1928 the stadium was renamed Stade Olympique Yves du Manoir
French rugby international and military aviator who had been killed that year in a plane accident
du Manoir won the first of his 8 caps when selected at out-half against Ireland at Colombes on New Year's Day 1925
With redevelopment of the Parc des Princes in 1972, Colombes was relegated from French sport’s centre-stage. However, with some refurbishments over the decades, it most notably became the home ground of the Top 14 rugby franchise Racing 92 before the club relocated in late 2017 to the La Défense Arena
a venue hosting the 2024 swimming events in which Irish interest will be strong
Owned since 2002 by the local authority for the Hauts-de-Seine (number 92 in the list of France's 96 départements)
the Colombes complex has undergone extensive renovations and is the only facility from 100 years ago that will once again host events at this summer’s games
when it will be the venue for the full field hockey programme
On Saturday next, the Irish men's team begins its campaign against Pool B opponents Belgium on Pitch 2 of the Yves du Manoir Stadium. When the Games conclude, the stadium will become the headquarters and centre of excellence for the French Hockey Federation
the complex will also accommodate rugby and football

delivery of facilities for Paris 2024 has been on time and within budget
Given the imperatives of sustainability and financial sobriety
and against the backdrop of accusations of sports washing levelled at so many large sporting events
Paris 2024 boasts that 95% of all the required infrastructure for organising the Games was already in place and that the legacy for Parisians and wider French society will be both real and lasting
The Stade de France, built for the 1998 World Cup
has been repurposed at very little additional expense as the main Olympic Stadium
the fact that the Colombes Olympic Stadium from 100 years ago is still in use
is a powerful symbol of responsible and environmentally sensitive sports infrastructure policy and planning

A dive into the world of a viol master proves deeply rewarding
Description: A dive into the world of a viol master proves deeply rewarding
Works: Marais: Pièces de viole Book 2 – excerpts
Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe: Concert XLIVe Tombeau les Regrets
Catalogue number: HARMONIA MUNDI HMM905356
The relationship between the young viol player Marin Marais and his teacher
was famously fictionalised in the book and film Tous les matins du monde
Here we meet Marais towards the end of Louis XIV’s reign
paying tribute to his former teacher with a plaintive tombeau but striking out boldly with more adventurous solo pieces
The superb French early music ensemble La Rêveuse interprets this elusive and intricate music with a stylish gravity
Co-founders virtuoso violist Florence Bolton and Benjamin Perrot
with a second bass viol and harpsichord in the continuo group
Read: Rachel Barton Pine plays sonatas of Arcangelo Corelli
Review: Sainte-Colombe: Concerts Á deux violes esgales
Concert review: Isabelle Faust (violin) Antoine Tamestit (viola)
Marais introduces character pieces for the first time
and in ‘Cloches ou Carillon’ conjures up the clanging and pealing of bells
made up entirely of double and triple stops played with immense skill by Bolton
The tour de force is a set of 32 variations on the ‘La folia’ theme
Perrot switches from the more meditative theorbo to Baroque guitar and the ensemble gradually whips up the excitement to some jaw-dropping virtuosity by Bolton on the top strings of her seven-string bass viol
balanced to perfection with each instrument’s timbre allowed to speak
A foray into an Italian Baroque byway proves unenlightening
A refreshing dive into the quartet byways by these Paris-based siblings
Janet Banks reviews cello professor Brian Hodges’ volume on cello repertoire from the 17th century to the present day
An album to seduce and thrill in equal measure
A crack ensemble proves its mettle in highly varied fare
An adventurous violist offers a dance through the centuries

The Greek yogurt giant has spent $30 million to improve its La Colombe plant in Michigan and to increase pay and benefits for the coffee brand’s workforce
Just six months after buying La Colombe for $900 million
Chobani is bringing its way of doing business to the 30-year-old coffee brand
The Greek yogurt giant has already spent more than $30 million to improve its Muskegon
La Colombe plant and to increase the pay and other benefits for the more than 900 employees working across the coffee brand
who started with Chobani in 2011 as a production manager and now is the director of operations at the La Colombe plant
said the company tapped into the prior experience it amassed with Chobani to make improvements faster at the newly acquired brand
It’s already paying off through improved efficiency
more reliable equipment and stronger safety programs
if you walked around the building right now
it would look considerably different than a couple of months ago,” Cooper said in an interview
Cooper recently sat down to discuss changes to the Michigan La Colombe plant and future plans for the facility where it makes its popular ready-to-drink cans and multi-serve coffee
This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity
FOOD DIVE: What did you notice at Chobani when La Colombe was acquired
BILL COOPER: There was a lot of internal excitement throughout the organization
We had kind of just been focusing on dairy very heavily and then we slowly expanded our [Chobani] portfolio
We were aware of the [possibility of an] acquisition
and there was a lot of conversation about what the future would hold and would there be opportunities for professionals such as myself to take part in the growth and the improvement of the La Colombe organization
In terms of resource sharing and resource relocating
Can you discuss more about the resources that La Colombe has been able to tap into from Chobani following the acquisition
COOPER: From a performance optimization standpoint and a processes standpoint
we have leaders at our other [Chobani] sites that have already been through this
very similar to the current state here in Muskegon
So having resources that have lived through those experiences and then can take their personal experience and deploy it here in Michigan
it closes the gap in terms of lead time to solve these kinds of issues
It's resources with experiences that have been through this before
What changes have been implemented for employees at the Muskegon
COOPER: There’s a very heavy focus on our infrastructure right now
We started with a $20 million infusion into our workforce
and then another $10 million here on site and that's starting with investments
they would look markedly different right now than they had three months ago
We're trying to steer ourselves towards becoming a first-choice employer in the area
You can't just say that you want to be that without taking some action around it
Just kind of paying attention to those types of details right out of the gate
like what are the immediate improvements that we can make to improve the overall situation and strive towards a better work environment
Are you tapping into Chobani’s playbook and bringing it to La Colombe
We want to maintain a strong presence in the community
We want to continue to build that relationship
And that's an integral part of our business plan
And that's a lot of the reason that I'm behind this company in the way that I am
You’re only a few months into La Colombe being under the Chobani ownership
Are you planning more investments in the plant and your employees
COOPER: In terms of the workforce investments
I think we're pretty close to being over the goal line there
we're always looking to improve the situation for our employees
But the $10 million that I referred to as part of our site were improvements and expansion [for things] like a better and bigger parking lot
better facilities in terms of locker rooms and bathrooms and office space
and then equipment improvements and things along those lines
and I can tell you that we have big plans for this company and big plans for the site
Can you talk more about the future of the La Colombe in Muskegon
It’s only six months after the acquisition
We're going to continue to invest in our people
And we'll continue to challenge ourselves in that regard
So we're working very diligently doing just that and making sure that we have a full 24/7 schedule to run
we're continuing to challenge ourselves on our product and our formulation and our packaging materials and things along those lines that just contribute to the overall improvement
it would look considerably different than a couple of months ago
We're not where we want to be in terms of our journey
working with timelines and being pragmatic about how quickly we can achieve this stuff if we're going to do it correctly
It's a smaller facility than [Chobani’s plants in] Twin Falls
[Idaho] and South Edmeston [New York,] so I'd like to think we can get it done a little bit quicker
We've actually made some pretty substantial performance gains over the last couple of months in terms of our efficiency
just building our processes while we continue to focus on getting our equipment to run a little better
Let's get the site and current state performing well before we start to build around it
I think that's an important pillar of what we're looking to do here because we don't want to build around something that's not performing up to our standards
We're just looking to mistake-proof it and optimize it
and we've done a lot of those types of things and in a very short period of time
When it comes to the Michigan La Colombe facility
can you tap into insight from the other two Chobani plants you mentioned
We're modeling after our successes in Twin Falls and in South Edmeston
So that's been a little bit of how we were able to solve a lot of this stuff sooner rather than later
We're just deploying best practices that we've already learned in the sites
You have this component of let's get our equipment running better
Let's get our people trained up and focus on our culture
But we also have to build the processes around all that
So it's still a little bit rocky in that regard
But certainly seeing the gains and feeling the gains

France — Late weekend afternoons in July are usually prime time for social meet-ups and busy café tables in the pedestrian streets of Saint-Denis
terraces emptied early on Saturday as handymen hastily nailed up wooden planks on shop windows
After riots raged through the streets of this Paris suburb for three straight nights
Colombes Mayor Patrick Chaimovitch declared a night curfew starting Saturday evening
and scheduled to last until Tuesday morning
Many other municipalities have taken similar measures
Colombes is a diverse town of 80,000 — home to both well-off young professionals and multi-racial
where 17-year-old Nahel was shot dead by the police last Tuesday
Like in many suburban towns in the Paris region and beyond
the wave of violence that followed has left inhabitants stunned
Standing next to Chaimovitch in front of a local retailer on Saturday
handed out leaflets to passers-by to explain the curfew rules and convince the unhappy
it started Wednesday [the day after the teen was killed]
There’s exasperation in local communities
… People can’t sleep,” Beaussier said
“Some people have been under a de facto curfew and can’t leave their homes
went to one of the town’s more disadvantaged neighborhoods
first thing Saturday morning to assess the damage
“I saw a dozen cars that had been burned in just one street,” he said
kids that are asking what’s happening … there is fear and anxiety,” he added
fireworks and police sirens have kept people awake at night — in social housing and fancier homes alike
inhabitants have set up WhatsApp groups to warn each other of potential rioters
Now they are all under the imposed curfew from 10 p.m
[her name has been changed at her request] came to the eyewear store where she works Saturday morning only to find its window smashed by looters
Four people were arrested after they strolled the streets with branded shopping bags from the store
“Some kids … I don’t even want to know who they are,” she said
Sipping a glass of wine with her and her boyfriend at the local wine shop
expresses dismay at the continued violence
“I have a 17-year-old boy and of course if he were shot dead like that I’d go crazy,” Jérôme said
“But it doesn’t explain everything after that,” added Amandine’s boyfriend
Jérôme said the rioting runs counter to the town’s history and way of life
“Colombes is a city where we’re used to living as French together
The town’s seemingly happy story of diversity has been seriously shattered
or National Rally as they call it these days
they’re going to revel in it,” lamented a local shop owner who declined to speak on the record
“I had my shop destroyed during the Yellow Jackets
got robbed one summer before that … Now this,” he said
that the kid died for nothing … Is that a reason to make others pay
Pierre-Édouard Stérin is hoping to use his financial firepower to remold French politics in line with his conservative ideals
here’s how it looked to political insiders

Marine Le Pen has been trying to normalize the National Rally in recent years
