Juventus fans familiar with Conte’s Scudetto message for Napoli | OneFootballFootball Italia
Antonio Conte warned Napoli players that only those who win ‘make history’, a message he had already sent to Juventus players over ten years ago
Conte’s Napoli are enjoying a three-point lead over second-placed Inter with three games remaining in Serie A and the Italian tactician motivated his team after Saturday’s win over Lecce by saying: “Those who win write the history books
As reported by Ilbianconero.com, it’s practically the same message that Conte wrote in a celebratory shirt at Juventus in 2014 after he had won the third consecutive Scudetto with the Bianconeri
LECCE, ITALY – MAY 03: Giacomo Raspadori of Napoli celebrates with their teammates after scoring his team’s opening goal during the Serie A match between Lecce and Napoli at Stadio Via del Mare on May 03
After the last home game against Cagliari in 2013-14
Conte wore a shirt with this message: “There are those who read history and those who write it.”
The Italian coach would leave the Bianconeri only a few months later
paving the way for the beginning of Massimiliano Allegri’s era
Conte has won four Serie A titles as a coach, three at Juventus and once at Inter
this was an important step towards the Scudetto,” Conte said after a 1-0 win over Lecce
while we arrived here dealing with an emergency situation
“People seemed to act like this was all normal
but Olivera played for the first time with me as a central defender,” insisted the coach
“This is a team that is responding with everyone
as even Simone Scuffet did well against Bologna.”

Once a month at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium
The University of Texas holds a head coaches’ meeting
It’s a chance for the men and women who run UT’s 21 varsity sports teams to check in with each other
as well as with Chris Del Conte and the rest of the athletics staff.
Director of Swimming and Diving and Men’s Head Coach Bob Bowman attended his first one after being hired away from Arizona State
which had just won the 2024 NCAA championship
Since Del Conte became UT’s athletic director at the end of 2017
he has almost always hired coaches who have won or at least played for an NCAA title
and also inherited several more with national championships.
“I was in that head coaches’ meeting my first day
I’m glad I got that done.’ It’s definitely the standard.”
That standard of reaching an NCAA title has always been the expectation at The University of Texas
But expectation isn’t always the reality.
“Darrell Royal had a saying,” Del Conte says
it’s hard to put them back in.’”
The aphorism is familiar to most Longhorns: It’s what DKR told Mack Brown when Brown got the Texas football job in 1997
referring to the fact that everyone involved in college sports—fans
and administrators—must be aligned to have success
legendary UT athletic director DeLoss Dodds not only put the BBs back into the box but got everybody locked and loaded.
But even before Dodds announced his retirement in October 2013
the metaphorical ammunition had begun to scatter
succeeded Dodds as AD but was gone by 2015
with former Longhorns football great Mike Perrin
who’d originally replaced Patterson on an interim basis
The man seemingly known to all as “CDC” was hired in 2017 by then–UT president Greg Fenves.
Del Conte came to the Forty Acres after three years at Rice and eight years at Texas Christian University; during his time in Fort Worth
he helped sustain the Horned Frogs’ success in football under Gary Patterson and also took the school from the Mountain West Conference to the Big 12 in 2013.
That came after a very stressful sales pitch one year prior to none other than Dodds; the living legend and the up-and-comer hadn’t previously met
“This larger-than-life figure who understood the brand of Texas and built this iconic athletic program
along with Chris Plonsky and Jody Conradt.” (Del Conte is the first UT AD to run both men’s and women’s sports
who still holds the title of executive senior associate athletics director
and Donna Lopiano built when women’s athletics director was a separate job.)
that the chain of events which saw Texas A&M leave the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference
with Texas joining the SEC.
Having started his career out west (at Washington State
Del Conte had previously resisted overtures from other schools
and the other is about to graduate.
“The straw that stirs the drink nationally,” Del Conte says
“It’s one of those jobs that you know you can’t say no to
You come to this place because you know that Texas has a chance to be the very best in every sport
I wanted to see if I could ride Bevo for eight seconds.”
Or eight years (and counting).
Between the Longhorns’ initial SEC season and both recent and upcoming changes to NCAA Division I athletics in terms of scholarship limits
But Del Conte—while quick to redirect the credit to his staff
the iconic power of the Texas brand itself—was still required to take some anyway
while a $10 million endowment also made his full title “Vice President and Lois and Richard Folger Athletics Director.” In the summer of 2024
he was named Sports Business Journal’s Athletic Director of the Year.
which measures success across all NCAA sports
all 21 teams had an average GPA of 3.0 or higher for the first time ever
And football coach Steve Sarkisian’s team has made it to the College Football Playoff two years in a row (“It’s coming
It’s coming,” Del Conte promised of the next logical step—actually winning the whole thing—at his annual town hall in February).
he was also named the Austin Chamber of Commerce’s Austinite of the Year
While that is fundamentally a business award for someone who is essentially Texas Athletics’ CEO
Del Conte’s Longhorns are also a more pivotal part of Austin’s culture than UT sports has ever been—as unmistakable a presence as C3 Presents
“[Del Conte] is probably the most dynamic athletic director in America,” men’s golf coach John Fields says
“And the most powerful.”
“He truly might be the smartest guy I know,” women’s basketball coach Vic Schaefer says.
And lest you think such praise only comes from people who are dependent on the athletic director for future contract extensions
here’s what the man who has that power over CDC
Chairman of the Board of Regents Kevin Eltife
had to say in a video celebrating that Chamber of Commerce honor: “The best part of my job is getting to work with Chris Del Conte.”
You’ll often find Del Conte having lunch or breakfast in the cafeteria at the Texas Athletics and Nutrition Center (aka the TANC)
and not just so he can tell a coach or player
as he tries to attend every home game of every sport)
It’s a daily reminder of why he does the job
but also of the way that he grew up.
was originally enrolled in a Catholic seminary
Robert and his wife Michelle decided that their calling would be helping underprivileged youth
they raised Del Conte and his two younger siblings alongside about 75 other kids who lived
It was a whirlwind of community and conversation among people from vastly different experiences and backgrounds trying to get somewhere in life
a room full of student-athletes from all over Texas
“The beautiful thing about sports is you have so many people from so many walks of life,” Del Conte says
While the job of a big-time college sports AD may be more glamorous (and lucrative) than mission-driven public service
for Del Conte it is still an extension of his father’s work
Del Conte first attended Oregon State on a track and field scholarship
then transferred to the University of California Santa Barbara when OSU dropped its program—so he truly has a first-hand perspective on both student-athlete life and the business of sports in higher education
When he began to see athletics as a possible career
his father had him write an essay laying out what he wanted to do and why
Del Conte talked about the way sports had changed society through such figures as Muhammad Ali
especially when it’s hand in hand with education
with the coaches acting as teachers.
“I always tell everyone a coach is the greatest asset we have,” Del Conte says
“They believe in someone when someone doesn’t believe in themselves
giving them the tools necessary to be successful
And that’s basically the tenor of the job: We enhance society by getting people to figure out who their true self is
and they can go out in the world and do great things.”
what starts here changes the world.
Del Conte’s father never got to see his oldest son on national television
Robert Del Conte died at the age of 61 in 2000
after stopping to help what appeared to be a driver with a broken-down car by the side of the road in California
The crime happened just after he’d been with his son at a Stanford–Arizona baseball game (Del Conte was then associate athletic director at Arizona).
Del Conte had just shared the news that his wife
Robin Ward—a math professor at Rice whom he first met when they both worked at Cal Poly—was pregnant for the first time
All you guys are doing great,’” Del Conte says
“And then the accident happened.” (That is still the only word Del Conte can bring himself to use.)
I’ve taken solace in that conversation many times.”
Del Conte’s many siblings from the ranch—some were adopted by the family
while the rest are still considered blood—now regularly turn up at Texas games
including this past year’s College Football Playoff semifinal at the Cotton Bowl
His office includes several pictures of himself as a kid with the many other kids at the ranch.
it spawned from my time there,” Del Conte says
that gives me great respect for the chair I’m sitting in
Because I know the chair I came from.”
The roster of coaches Del Conte has built is not as simple as just collecting resumes with championships
They also have to be right for what Del Conte calls
it comes down to the saying that is emblazoned all over the athletics facilities: The pride and winning tradition of The University of Texas will not be entrusted to the weak or the timid.
I’m comfortable being a Cleveland [Guardian]
You have to hire to the standard of The University of Texas
because it’s not for everybody.”
but “have they won with the standards that hold true to who we are?” he continues
Are they going to understand the magnitude?”
it was about giving them the best experience possible
and the best path to compete for championships
And it was also about that for the fans and donors
especially now that Longhorn Foundation contributions aren’t tax-deductible.
win or lose—with things such as Bevo Blvd.
and the in-game amenities and entertainment—was another
“We’re asking people to spend their discretionary income with us,” Del Conte says
“So we’re needing to create an environment that’s unbelievable.” For ideas
he looks not just to other schools and pro sports teams
but also companies from the Ritz Carlton to Disney
And since the entire athletic program is essentially financed by football and basketball—Del Conte refers to them as the “revenue producers,” and the other sports as “brand accentuators”—upgrading the level of competition and the schedule was just as important as the fact that the SEC happens to be the richest
with the highest-dollar potential for future TV contracts and College Football Playoff participation
being in the SEC honors two historic rivalries from the Southwest Conference (SWC)
while also keeping Oklahoma (which was a non-conference rival in the SWC/Big 8 days) and adding even more marquee opponents.
“Our not playing A&M for 12 years was a travesty for college athletics [and] a travesty for the state,” Del Conte says
And he also knew a lot of older alumni would welcome back the University of Arkansas
whose Frank Broyles–led teams were an inextricable part of the DKR era.
“And then playing the brands [that] are in the SEC and in our stadium is magic,” Del Conte adds
You’re going to then have a steady diet of Tennessee
While there are many things the AD does—budget-setting
perhaps the second-most public part of Del Conte’s job after hiring or firing coaches is serving as customer service agent
If the soda is flat at a football game concession stand
and someone feels it’s necessary to take that complaint all the way to the athletic director
In the video made for the Austin Chamber of Commerce
Eltife mentioned how Del Conte will walk around the stadium at 5 or 6 a.m
the toughest topic he had to tackle was not the College Football Playoff loss or men’s basketball’s disappointing 2025
but the loss of 1,000 parking spaces for baseball and softball games due to the land being repurposed for graduate student housing.
At one of his own initial coaches’ meetings
baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle was pleasantly surprised to see Sarkisian in the room
given the Longhorns were then days away from playing Clemson in the College Football Playoff (and at some schools
isn’t always subject to the same obligations as the other coaches)
Schlossnagle says that he and Sarkisian have also discussed the way they feel both supported and insulated by Del Conte
“Everybody allows you to do your job here,” Schlossnagle says
“I don’t hear from Board of Regents members
You don’t hear from the donor base trying to have input on the program.”
Winning also tends to quiet that—but mostly
I got to live in DeLoss Dodds’ good old days,” says John Fields
“And it feels like we’re going into Chris Del Conte’s good old days
It kind of puts chills on your arms.”

Conte lauds 'complete' McTominay's influence in Napoli's title chargeScott McTominay will be hoping to continue his dream season in Serie A when Napoli take on Lecce in the league on Saturday.Antonio Conte showered praise on Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay
lauding his rise to prominence and growing influence on the team since joining the club.
McTominay swapped Manchester United for Napoli in August last year and has gone on to become a crucial part of the Partenopei's Serie A title push this year
The Scotland international has 12 goals and two assists in 32 appearances across all competitions
with three of those strikes coming in his last five league matches.
only McTominay and Marek Hamsik (four times) have finished a top-flight campaign with at least 10 goals from midfield for Napoli.
with McTominay just one away from equalling the Slovakian's league total.
Napoli travel to the Stadio Ettore Giardiniero on Saturday to face Lecce
leading the Serie A summit by three points to Inter with four games of the campaign remaining.
And Conte highlighted the importance of McTominay in Napoli's success this term.
and he's reaching a key stage in his career where he needs to decide his direction," Conte told reporters on Friday.
"He never had a primary role at Man United

"His improvement has been shared by the whole team
Napoli's improvement from the 2023-24 season has been stark
with the club finishing in 10th and missing out completely on European football.
Napoli are the team that have improved the most compared to the same stage last season
earning 24 more points this time around.
with all of those fixtures coming against sides in the bottom half of the Serie A table.

We are now in the the final month of the season for Milan: the central objective of the Rossoneri is clearly the Coppa Italia final against Bologna
the standings do not smile upon Conceicao's team
Journalist Luca Serafini spoke on Carlo Pellegatti’s YouTube channel and offered his point of view on the club’s current moment
“The two matches that remain (before the final) are essentially training sessions
For Milan it is only a matter of carrying out dress rehearsals
and train for what is the only and final goal for this end of the season.”
Many evaluations of what the season has been from a technical
and club standpoint won’t change one bit even with a possible victory in the Cup
winning it changes the fans’ morale and shields them from all the teasing from rival supporters
I believe the evaluation by Milan supporters in general will remain centered on the many and endless disappointments suffered this year: the inexplicable elimination from the Champions League when you had very easy match points
and this distance from the top positions in the league are two very heavy burdens," as relayed via Milannews.it
“The sporting director in a football club is like the head physician in a hospital department
the stationmaster in a train station: a figure who cannot and must not be missing
He doesn’t just handle the transfer market
but also manages the coach and the locker room
it was because there were snags that made it impossible to reach
but first the words about Conte and other coaches
make me think that there is no decision-making power like there was with Maldini.”
“My favorite is Antonio Conte because he is a winner

Napoli's Scott McTominay scores during the Serie A soccer match between Monza and Napoli at U-Power Stadium in Monza
ROME — A few weeks ago when Napoli was struggling for goals and its title hopes were fading
coach Antonio Conte told Scott McTominay the team needed more from the midfielder
The Scotland international got the message
McTominay’s late header secured a 1-0 win at last-placed Monza on Saturday to pull Napoli level with Serie A leader Inter Milan
McTominay evaded his marker to redirect a cross from Giacomo Raspadori in the 72nd minute for his 10th goal across all competitions for Napoli this season
Napoli’s win places pressure on Inter ahead of the Nerazzurri’s visit to in-form Bologna on Sunday
McTominay joined Napoli in August in a 30.5 million euros ($35 million) transfer from Manchester United

Hawke and Conte Power Wake Forest to Midweek Win Over UNCG4/8/2025 9:57:00 PM | Baseball
The duo both launched two-run homers for their second of the season.
but Antonio Conte has warned they must complete the job to be remembered
but leading a Napoli side that finished 10th in Serie A last season to glory would arguably be his finest achievement yet
Giacomo Raspadori's stunner pushed the Partenopei closer to that aim on Saturday
though Inter later responded by beating Verona 1-0
meaning the teams are still separated by three points at the summit with three games remaining.
"I will say that if and when it eventually happens," he told reporters when asked if this would be his most memorable title win
"Let's not talk about things we don't have yet
I have won and lost titles on the last day
I have the experience needed to make the guys understand the importance
Nobody will remember us if we finish second."
but Conte was wary of facing a side who had drawn at Atalanta last time out - in a match that was rescheduled following the death of Lecce physiotherapist Graziano Fiorita
"I was very afraid of this match because of many situations
also because Lecce came from a draw snatched by Atalanta
there was also this misfortune that happened to a person I knew very well
Conte praised his players for earning three points in the face of continued injury problems
Defender Alessandro Buongiorno was their latest casualty this week and now looks set to miss the run-in with a groin injury
"We arrived managing an emergency because everything seems normal
but today (Mathias) Olivera played as a central defender and it's the first time he has done that with me," Conte said
I hope he can recover because we are continuing to lose pieces
"And this is the main quality of this team
We are on top of things and we want to continue until the end."

In November 2024, the JP Conte Family Foundation made a transformative $5 million gift to UCSF to establish two professorships in the Department of Neurology. These endowed positions, overseen by department chair S. Andrew Josephson
will support groundbreaking research and activities related to Parkinson’s disease—a cause deeply personal to Jean-Pierre Conte and his family
“UCSF is an incredible place – the #1 recipient of NIH funding
with some of the most highly regarded clinician-scientists working to improve treatments for Parkinson’s and other diseases.”
this connection to UCSF began when his father

Pierre and Isabel Conte have compelling immigrant stories
Pierre lived through the Nazi occupation in Lyon
including bodies of French civilians piled up in the schoolyard
Although a leg injury kept him from serving in the Korean War
he contributed to his infantry by fitting recruits with uniforms
This training as a tailor became his trade and he turned it into his career after the war
JP’s mother dreamed of living in America from an early age
“She wanted to escape the restrictions on women in Cuba
she left for a weekend trip to Miami and never looked back
Born in Brooklyn and mostly raised in New Jersey
JP was mentored by Wall Street titans who were loyal customers of his father
then a clothing salesman at the exclusive Paul Stuart store in New York City
They helped guide JP through his education and early career
leading him to his current role as chairman and managing partner of Genstar Capital
a premier middle-market private equity firm
When Pierre was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in his mid-seventies
JP was determined to secure the best medical care for him
Through the VA Medical Center in San Francisco
and he was reassured by the exceptional expertise and care they provided
“I knew right away that my dad was getting the tops of the top at the VA,” JP says
His father’s battle and eventual passing only strengthened JP’s commitment to supporting Parkinson’s research and investigations into neurodegenerative disorders that the Department of Neurology helps lead nationally
“Andy is such a great ambassador for UCSF,” JP notes

Previously accustomed to playing in the attacking line of three in a 4-2-3-1
After some struggles to find the right balance in the first season
it eventually propelled City to back-to-back titles
Seeing players like that in those roles was highly unusual at the time
to the extent that De Bruyne felt the need to give his new role a new name
“It’s a little change but it’s alright,” he said shortly after Guardiola took charge
I play not as a No 10 but as a ‘free eight’ with a lot of movement everywhere.” It was seemingly the first time the phrase ‘free eight’ had been used
but the irony was that Guardiola doesn’t give any of his attacking players a ‘free’ role
while traditionally committed to attacking football and possession football
Guardiola is one of the coaches in the modern game who works most structurally
He generally asks his players to stick to strict positional instructions and
while those free eights had licence to move forward into the channels
they didn’t have freedom to move laterally
Antonio Conte has generally based his coaching philosophy around a similar concept to Guardiola — different systems
but the same approach in terms of positional play in the final third
usually with five players filling five different channels
and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa both hoping to score a tap-in
You expect Conte’s midfielders to be positionally cautious
but instead they play almost absurdly attacking roles
When Politano pulled back a cross from the right
you’d expect either of the No 8s to be breaking onto this ball as it reaches the ‘D’
What is also interesting — and the thing that separates them from Guardiola’s interpretation of free eights — is how much freedom they have to roam laterally
often finding themselves together on the same side of the pitch
This move is typical Napoli, with a ball up to Romelu Lukaku
who is always coming towards the ball rather than running into the channels this season
McTominay makes runs from the left central-midfield role in behind Lukaku
which means he and Anguissa end up in roughly the same zone
the two are almost marking one another as this move develops down the left
It ends with Anguissa nodding a far-post cross into the six-yard box towards McTominay
Here’s that same routine in the second half — a ball up to Lukaku
with McTominay running diagonally in behind
leaving the inside-left channel completely bare
And this tendency was relevant to Napoli’s next two goals
theoretically playing to the right of midfield
pressured on the left touchline and won the ball
this goal was reminiscent of Napoli’s third in the thumping win at Fiorentina
but again it was Anguissa breaking down the left…
Some of the situations might seem relatively minor
certainly some coaches — and even the Conte of previous seasons — would not want Anguissa and McTominay on the same vertical line like this
Napoli’s midfield trio were occupying no more than five yards of lateral width — Lobotka holding
but ends up making a run in behind down the far side
almost overlapping McTominay to run into the channel
And Anguissa’s cross found Lukaku at the near post to head home the winner
It puts Napoli seven points clear of Atalanta
perhaps turning the title battle into a two-horse race between Napoli and second-placed Inter
it’s a very different Napoli side from the one which memorably triumphed two years ago
(Piotr) Zielinski and (Khvicha) Kvaratskhelia have left,” said Conte afterwards
If the club wants to do something (in the market)
otherwise I go into battle with these lads and know they will never let me down.”
McTominay and Anguissa will never be the most stylish of footballers
Napoli have won six in a row — and without any European commitments
have an excellent chance of winning the Scudetto
Anguissa interview: 'Kvaratskhelia said his season changed thanks to that day'

The Partenopei have taken just three points from their last four games going into Saturday's showdown at the Maradona
Antonio Conte was typically testy after Sunday's surprising 2-1 loss at Como
which led to his Napoli side being displaced at the summit of Serie A by Inter
When he was asked if he felt if the young man in the home dugout, Cesc Fabregas, was capable of having a career as "fortunate" as his own, Conte quickly countered, "A fortunate career
I've achieved because I broke my back."
And that's precisely why Conte was in such foul form on the banks of the beautiful Lake Como. As he said himself
his players had initially responded well to the concession of an early own goal
drawing level soon after through Giacomo Raspadori to go in all-square at the break
but simply didn't turn up for the second half
"Today," Conte continued, "we were Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde
And it's not the first time it's happened this season."
and nobody is quite sure which one will turn up for Saturday's Scudetto showdown with Inter at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona..

“Darrell Royal had a saying: ‘A united Texas is a reckoning when all the BBs are in a box,’” Del Conte said from behind the legendary coach’s old desk

“He is truly one of a kind,” said Oklahoma Athletic Director Joe Castiglione
”I knew it when Texas hired him that success would follow.”
Del Conte sees the work as an exercise in servant leadership
a philosophy he adopted growing up in a children’s home his parents started on a New Mexico ranch
His desire to help people mirrors that of his father
who was murdered after stopping to aid a stranded motorist
All they wanted was for their kids to live out a motto his father instilled in him: “You be honest
Del Conte’s daughter painted a portrait of her grandfather that sits in his spacious office suite at the football stadium — along with a photo of the children at the ranch
the BBs and a mostly empty bottle of Jack Daniel’s from a staff Christmas party that remained in Royal’s desk and was passed down through generations

UT president Jay Hartzell can draw a direct line from the success of the department to the 24.3% increase in the number of applications for freshman admission to UT for Fall 2025

“I can help shape my character and who I am by reading,” Del Conte said
Credit Del Conte’s research skills for why football game days at UT look like a literal circus
has gotten more elaborate each year since he launched it in 2018
growing from a handful of food and retail vendors to include attractions such as a Ferris wheel and a zip line
“I went and studied Disney,” Del Conte said
but can we apply the same principles to what we do
All the bananas stuff we have on game day here is all about saying
come spend the day with us and we may or may not win the game
but you’re helping young kids change their life and fulfill their dream
we want you to be a part of it.’” Del Conte has spearheaded other projects
including the renovation of the South End Zone of Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium
the construction of the $338 million Moody Center and the opening of the Texas Athletics Hall of Fame
His leading role in Texas’ move to the SEC marked a seismic shift in college athletics with reverberations far beyond Austin
Texas and Oklahoma’s 2021 announcement that they would leave the Big 12 started an exodus of schools to the Big Ten
Big 12 and ACC — the college football heavyweights — and resulted in the Pac-12’s collapse
Regionality in college sports has become moot
with programs such as SMU competing in conferences with teams on the opposite side of the country
which has corresponded with the dawn of NIL
Texas is well positioned to provide monetary incentives along with the prestige of playing in the SEC
widely considered the premiere league in college football
“I talked to Chris about where he saw college athletics heading and he was prescient
He saw that it was moving toward an era where the big brands were going to align in many ways to become more economically motivated,” Hartzell said
when they could start to participate through NIL and those kinds of things
were going to have a desire to be on the biggest stage.”
he responds directly to fans who tag him in posts with questions or concerns — right down to the kind of drinks served at home football games
“While [I’m] a little bit over the top on responding to every little thing
and Del Conte embraces the responsibility that comes with being the person to stem the tide
“You only feel pressure if you’re not prepared,” he said
“‘The winning tradition of the University of Texas shall not be entrusted to the timid or the weak.’ That sums up Texas
He made headlines over the summer for hiring new Texas baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle away from Texas A&M
the runner-up in last year’s College World Series and the Longhorns’ fiercest in-state rival
Schlossnagle was another home run hire for Del Conte
who in recent years has secured women’s basketball coach Vic Schaefer
track and field coach Edrick Floréal and swim coach Bob Bowman
But after Del Conte hired Sarkisian to lead the institution’s most prolific and important sporting brand
questions circulated over whether his profile was high enough to reach UT’s lofty expectations
Two consecutive trips to the College Football Playoff have silenced critics
but Del Conte could only hope he made the right decision to move on from former football coach Tom Herman
whose .640 winning percentage wasn’t meeting expectations
“I think that’s probably the hardest part of the job,” Del Conte said
who led Texas Tech men’s basketball to a surprise national championship appearance in 2019
But the university fired him in January 2023 after he was charged with a third-degree felony on suspicion of family violence the previous month
“Whether that would be here or anywhere else
I would have made the same decision,” Del Conte said
[but] I gotta come home at night and look at my wife and kids
… Something like that’s not going to allow you to sit there and say
there’s another side to the story.’ There isn’t
his tone becomes heavy with an acknowledgment that Beard’s charges squandered his opportunity to coach at his alma mater
Most of Del Conte’s dismissals haven’t been under such complicated circumstances
he’s made the call to part ways with several coaches who had winning records
including women’s basketball coach Karen Aston
“If you give the coaches everything they need and something fails
it just didn’t work.’ Sometimes it’s a fit,” Del Conte said
“What did we do to help that person?” he continued
“Because you just can’t get into this cycle of insanity [of constantly hiring new coaches] hoping they’ll fix it
and are we giving the coaches everything they need to fulfill our goal
you’re just bringing another hole to plug a dam that still has leaks and hoping it gets better
Texas Athletics has been enjoying perhaps the most fruitful run in its history
Schaefer couldn’t totally relish the success of his women’s basketball team
which finished Top 10 in the country and made the Elite Eight last season
there were four coaches that won the national championship and six others that played for the national championship,” Schaefer said
“I wasn’t even in the top half of the room.”
An Elite Eight appearance would be cause for celebration at most schools
where national championships have always been the standard — even during UT’s down years when the glory days had started to become a distant memory
fans don’t have to remember the glory days
and Del Conte is a big reason Texas is back
He’s made UT cool in the same way sports boosted his social status as a teen living in the children’s home
The big man on campus who can’t go a couple minutes without running into someone he knows is no longer an outsider
But the spirit of the ranch has never left him
“‘Did you do right by people?’ That’s the whole goal.”

Arrigo Sacchi is convinced that Napoli has already won the Scudetto, and this comes across in the interview he gave to Il Mattino:
no one really thought he could make it all the way
He succeeded because he doesn't think he's a phenomenon
he knows that only work is at the base of every achievement
And what matters is to explain to your players that the premise of failure is feeling like you've already arrived.”
but the aggression and pride I see in Conte’s playbook I don't see in his Inter lately
damn it: only Antonio could make someone coming from Manchester United want to improve himself.”
And only he can manage to make the club take another step up.”
Marotta did that when they were at Juventus
he asked me to make him change his mind because he had dug in his heels after being denied a player he absolutely wanted
Because Antonio is tough: if he gets something in his head
he won’t change his mind for anything in the world
But it seems to me that he wanted Napoli just as much as Napoli wanted him
I don’t think the relationship will end so soon.”
Richard Neal addresses questions Thursday during a meeting with The Berkshire Eagle's editorial board. “I do think that the Supreme Court's going to be a check on this presidency," he said of the Trump administration
Medicaid and veterans benefits are not only worthy of defense
I think they appeal to a broad section of people,” Neal said
“I think [Trump has] made a terrible miscalculation on the Medicaid front.”
Conte Federal Building is off the list of “surplus” buildings the Trump administration wants to sell for now
according to one of its chief tenants — U.S
In March, the U.S. General Services Administration listed the building among multiple Massachusetts locations being considered for possible sale
Kennedy Federal Building in Boston and the Internal Revenue Service center in Andover
But given the impulsive nature of the decision making [in President Donald Trump’s administration] it could be put [back] on the list,” Neal said Thursday during an editorial board meeting at The Eagle
“The Conte building serves a real purpose,” Neal said
I think any building that says it's an address for the United States of America
Named for the late Republican U.S. congressman from Pittsfield, the Conte Federal Building at 78 Center St. is the only location for Veterans Affairs offices in Berkshire County. It’s also home to a VA outpatient clinic providing primary care and specialty health services
including mental health care and treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder
Neal was asked about calls for Democrats to be more assertive in their opposition to Trump
signed by leaders of numerous city and town Democratic Party Committees
such as withholding unanimous consent in the Senate
and creating a “shadow cabinet” responding to Trump policies with alternatives
The letter also calls for replacing Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer
but there's also an arithmetic problem in the House of Representatives
and there's an arithmetic problem in the Senate,” where Republicans hold slim majorities
But Neal thinks that anticipated efforts to cut popular Medicaid and Social Security benefits will give congressional Republicans cause to break with Trump.
“I think we also have to figure out how we're going to win the next round of congressional elections
also expressing confidence that the midterm elections will in fact be held
“So I get the frustration that people feel
because I don't think it's well thought out on his side.”
congressional Republicans “roll their eyes” in the hallway and elevators of the Capitol
“I think [Trump has] made a terrible miscalculation on the Medicaid front
“[Trump’s approval number] has certainly gone south on the economy
his number is going to be even more weakened
Social Security or Medicare or veterans benefits
Neal also addressed the anxiety many have about the erosion of democratic norms and the denial of due process in cases involving immigrants seized by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.
“I think there's a fear factor that's there for sure,” Neal said
“I do think that the Supreme Court's going to be a check on this presidency
… I've got confidence that the court's going to resist at the embrace of traditional conservative principles
there's going to be a lot of pain in between.”

Feared layoffs there have not materialized according to sources

Department of Agriculture to fund and engineer critical farm infrastructure like their irrigation system

Reports that USDA employees in Pittsfield would be laid off by the Trump administration turned out to be false.
The property was placed on a tentative list of federal buildings that might be sold
but has since been removed from the list.
Richard Neal's office is located at the Silvio O
Neal did not respond to requests for updates to the federal building's status
The USDA did not lay off employees at its Berkshire County headquarters in Pittsfield
But the fate of the federal building remains uncertain. “It’s impossible to know what’s real and what’s not,' said one person who works in the building
Department of Agriculture farm agency staff who work in the Silvio O
Conte Federal Building were laid off have turned out to be false
But the fate of the building that houses the agency remains uncertain.
The three USDA’s Pittsfield Service Center employees have not been fired amid widespread job cuts at the agency nationwide
said a person who works in the building and is familiar with the situation
The service center currently employs one person in the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service and two in the Farm Service Agency loan program
who asked not to be named for fear of losing their job
Reductions in staffing in the office over the last year or so are due to “normal attrition” like people moving away
it always has been hard to hire staff to work in the USDA’s Pittsfield office
which is its Berkshire County headquarters
A USDA spokesperson did not answer specific questions about the Pittsfield office
They told The Eagle that while USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins “supports President Trump’s directive to eliminate wasteful spending and ensure taxpayer dollars are used effectively,” Rollins says she also wants to make sure that farmers continue to be supported
“Secretary Rollins understands the array of mission-critical positions and programs at the Department,” the spokesperson wrote in an email
“and she will ensure that those areas have the resources and personnel they need to continue serving the American people.”
a person who works in the Conte building expressed some relief mixed with skepticism
“It’s impossible to know what’s real and what’s not," they said
That's because many federal workers in the building are still laboring under a cloud of uncertainty after the property was tentatively listed among federal buildings that might be sold
Staffers at the Conte building also include employees of the General Services Administration — which owns the building — as well as staff in the offices of Veterans Affairs and the Social Security Administration
These concerns follow the Trump administration’s continued efforts to slash what it believes is widespread government inefficiency that is wasting taxpayer dollars
The reports of layoffs at the USDA’s Pittsfield Service Center alarmed farmers who rely on the agency's local programs to issue loans
or to help them buy and install critical equipment and provide engineering and other services
The GSA last month terminated the lease at the USDA’s local office in Amherst
setting off worries that the Berkshire office would be next
The USDA now has eight of these field offices across the state
one of which is in Hadley — which the Amherst office is consolidating with
Fears also were driven by the termination of nearly 50 of these service center leases across the country
as well as announcements of massive layoffs at the agency.
These include probationary USDA staff who were slated for layoffs. But a court ordered the USDA to reinstate those nearly 6,000 workers. That is under appeal, according to a statement from the USDA
Berkshire farmers are already reeling from the agency's decision to end a pandemic-era program next month that provided money to farmers to produce extra food for pantries.
the Conte building parking lot was nearly full
Most of the VA parking spaces were occupied
and the government vehicles used by USDA staff to make farm visits were parked in the agency's designated spaces
Some people who work in the Conte building say they have not received definitive answers about the fate of the building
They fear it could added back to the sale list
and their jobs either cut or moved to a more distant location.
“It’s hard to get information,” said the person who works in the building
“We’re kind of just taking it one day at a time.”
No federal buildings in Massachusetts are currently on any of these lists
although the website is regularly updating
Richard Neal's office did not respond to requests for updates on the status of the Conte building this week.
A GSA spokesperson said that certain buildings are being selected for sale by the GSA as part of the Trump administration's "direction to right size the federal real estate portfolio," and "optimize the space agencies need to achieve their missions."
"GSA employees are laser focused on supporting our partner agencies and providing the best value for the American taxpayer," the spokesperson wrote in an email
"GSA is in constant communications with our customer agencies to ensure they are aware of our actions and have the opportunity to work with us to come to the best possible workplace solutions to support their mission."
“Secretary Rollins understands the array of mission critical positions and programs at the Department
and she will ensure that those areas have the resources and personnel they need to continue serving the American people.”
