ArcheodunumAfter a Frenchman unearthed a skeleton beneath his house
an archaeological excavation revealed a total of 38 graves in his basement
a French homeowner made a macabre discovery in the dirt beneath his house: a human skeleton
The find sparked an archaeological excavation that revealed the presence of 38 graves and 10 sarcophagi dating to the early medieval period
Experts have long known that there was a cemetery in the area and have even uncovered a few sarcophagi over the centuries
but this is the largest excavation of its kind in the neighborhood
researchers hope that analysis of the skeletons will shed light on the area’s former inhabitants and their medieval burial practices
ArcheodunumThe tombs were meticulously arranged
After uncovering a skeleton while renovating his basement
a man living in the Paris suburb of Corbeil-Essonnes called in experts to properly unearth the remains
The Regional Archaeology Service of Île-de-France sent researchers to excavate the cellar — and what they found was shocking
The archaeologists excavated all four rooms in the basement, revealing 38 graves distributed across roughly 500 square feet. As Archeodunum — the group that carried out the task — reports
19th-century scholars initially assumed that burials like these were linked to the Notre-Dame-des-Champs chapel
which was believed to have been built in the 7th century over a pagan temple
there has never been any evidence of either structure found to support that theory
nor have archaeologists carried out a scientific investigation of the area until now
researchers learned that these graves were much older than their forebears believed
ArcheodunumThis medieval cemetery was in use for more than seven centuries
and the remains were deposited over the course of hundreds of years — from the third to the 10th century C.E
the different types of burials uncovered during the excavations illustrate how funerary practices in France changed over time
The earliest burials found in the French cellar
as evidenced by the later graves uncovered beneath the house
As the Middle Ages began at the end of the fifth century
sarcophagi made of plaster came into fashion in the region
Archaeologists found 10 such sarcophagi in the cellar
though they weren’t decorated like many others were during the time period
Each of the 10 tombs held a single skeleton
and they were arranged in a fan-like shape
ArcheodunumThree of the Merovingian sarcophagi found beneath the Frenchman’s house
One sarcophagus uncovered in the basement was covered by a stone block
so it’s difficult for experts to determine exactly how it originally appeared
the stone does feature common motifs found on plaster sarcophagi from the period
Other information about the burials is scarce at the moment
as researchers are working to learn more about both the graves and the skeletons within them
the remains will be transported to a lab for further analysis
experts will determine the sex of the individuals
and any medical conditions they may have lived with
They will also make note of the position of the bones and the objects found in the graves in hopes of learning even more about medieval burial practices

a team of archaeologists conducted an excavation in the basement of a house in the Montconseil neighborhood of Corbeil-Essonnes (Île-de-France)
This operation was prescribed by the Regional Archaeology Service and was carried out after the accidental discovery of a skeleton while the homeowner was doing renovation work in his basement
The four rooms of the basement were excavated
This homeowner is not the first in the neighborhood to make a macabre discovery
The presence of an early Middle Ages cemetery in this area has been known for a long time
have been discovered since the 19th century
Scholars at the time assumed that these burials were linked to the Notre-Dame-des-Champs chapel
which was thought to have been built in the 7th century over a pagan temple that honored a spring
and the graves in this cemetery had not been the subject of scientific study until now
The excavation uncovered 38 graves distributed across the four rooms of the basement
which persisted throughout the seven centuries of the cemetery’s use
They shifted slightly to the east between the end of Antiquity and the beginning of the Middle Ages
This cemetery is older than the 19th-century scholars had supposed
The first burials date from the end of Antiquity
proving the area’s funerary purpose long before the chapel was built
the deceased were buried lying on their backs in wooden structures placed in deep pits
The deceased were now buried in plaster sarcophagi
This practice was widespread in Île-de-France
with some sarcophagi even decorated on their exterior walls
The sarcophagi were arranged side by side in a “fan” shape
One of the sarcophagi was topped with a block of soft stone
making it difficult to reconstruct its original form
while the opposite side features a Latin cross and a cross inscribed in a circle
These motifs are commonly found on plaster sarcophagi and evoke the funerary realm
but they also resemble decorations that might appear on the façades of Christian places of worship
Specialists will determine the sex of the individuals
The position of the bones and the objects in the graves will be studied to understand the burial practices: How was the grave constructed

France-based contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO) Yposkesi is building its second commercial facility to manufacture cell and gene therapies at its campus in Corbeil-Essonnes
The facility will increase the company’s manufacturing capacity to meet growing demand for gene therapy treatments for rare and common diseases
as well as supporting its expansion in the global biopharmaceutical market
Construction of the facility began in June 2021 under the project SKY
The project SKY is intended to be a new global resource for developers of advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs)
which are used to treat patients with rare and life-threatening diseases
Yposkesi is investing €58m ($71m) to develop the facility
which is scheduled to be operational by 2023
The plant is being designed in compliance with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations
The project is expected to generate around 80 jobs by 2023
The 5,000m² (50,000ft²) commercial cell and gene therapy manufacturing facility will be located next to Yposkesi’s existing 5,000m² facility on the Genopole Campus in Corbeil-Essonnes
This will double the facility’s production space and make it one of Europe’s largest ATMP facilities
The state-of-the-art facility is designed to be an ultra-modern facility compliant with current good manufacturing practice (cGMP)
It will address manufacturing capacity shortages of drug developers seeking to scale up the clinical trials and commercialise new therapeutic drugs
The plant will feature two additional production lines
and suites and storage for drug substance production will also be incorporated in the new building
Project SKY will allow Yposkesi to deliver a range of services
from drug development to the manufacture of large-scale commercial batches of ATMPs
Vinci Construction France subsidiary CBI will build the facility together with Pharmaplan
a Germany-based company that provides engineering services for the pharmaceutical industry
Yposkesi is a full-service CDMO based at the Genopole Innovation Campus in Corbeil-Essonnes
The company was launched as a spin-off from gene therapy pioneer Genethon in November 2016
with co-investment by the French muscular dystrophy association AFM-Telethon and the SPI investment fund from French public investment bank Bpifrance
a US-based subsidiary of South-Korean conglomerate SK Holdings
became Yposkesi’s majority shareholder
The acquisition will add a cell and gene therapy business to SK’s growing CDMO portfolio
Yposkesi’s existing state-of-the-art facility within the Genopole biotech hub has four independent manufacturing suites for bulk drug substances
Yposkesi offers end-to-end high-quality and on-time viral vector CDMO services from Phase I/II clinical trials through to commercial manufacturing
It offers extensive GMP manufacturing capabilities for adeno-associated virus (AAV) and lentiviral vector production based on transfection processes
Yposkesi uses its viral vectors manufacturing platform to offer integrated services to its customers
These include upstream and downstream bioprocess development
The company is investing significantly to advance its bioprocessing development for the economical delivery of high-quality genetically modified cell therapies and in vivo gene therapy projects

NTT’s Global Data Centers division plans to develop and operate its first data center campus in the Paris market
one of Europe’s key data center regions
35.5 acres) and will support a planned capacity of 84MW of critical IT load across three data centers
The site is located 50km south of Paris in Le Coudray-Montceaux and Corbeil-Essonnes
and has power reserved for day one deployment
Paris is a crucial market for NTT’s ongoing European data center footprint expansion plans
"This investment complements our existing and growing presence in Frankfurt
and Amsterdam and will complete our footprint in the FLAP Tier 1 markets in Europe," said Florian Winkler
Chief Executive Officer EMEA and Global Chief Operating Officer
"We will develop our presence in the Paris metro area in close partnership with the local municipalities
While this is NTT GDC’s first French campus
NTT Communications has previously listed data centers in Paris
Paris 2 was located at 88 Champs-Élysées in the center of the capital
NTT is conducting the build through a partnership with Logistics Capital Partners
which had first acquired the former brownfield site in 2019 through a public auction and subsequently managed the demolition
and obtained the permits and necessary power connections for data center usage
a Pan-European industrial site investor and developer
will remain strategically involved in supporting the development and delivery of this new campus
LCP has developed more than 10 million sq ft of logistics and industrial assets in Europe
it is fitting that NTT will house its latest data center at this site
the Data Village site was initially used by IBM
followed by Altis for producing semiconductor electronic components for various industries
Altis went bankrupt and was purchased by Xfab
while the unused plot of land (with an abandoned standing building on it) was sold to LCP
it began the development of a 125 MW IT data center campus
divided into two 50 MW IT units and a third 25 MW IT unit
LCP secured 125 MW of utility power with RTE
The Paris expansion is part of NTT’s $10 billion global investment in growth across 10 data centers in the US
It will also address two of the company’s main goals: meeting the world’s ever-increasing data needs and driving towards achieving net-zero emissions targets for its operations
including sourcing 100% renewable energy by 2030

Center Hospital Sud Francilien (CHSF) in Corbeil-Essonnes — about an hour south-east of Paris — announced that it was hit early Sunday with a cyberattack that crippled the hospital's “business software
storage systems (in particular medical imaging) and the information system relating to patient admissions.”
was contacted shortly after the incident and have been helping the hospital respond
For patients who needed care that required technology
the hospital said it immediately had to transfer them to other hospitals in the Île-de-France region
Emergency patients are being rerouted to other hospitals as well
“With regard to people hospitalized in the establishment, the crisis unit has put in place the necessary measures for their care,” the company said
It added that the operating rooms would also be affected by the technological outage
The hospital’s phone system was the only technology asset still running
On Tuesday, the hospital said its health professionals were “currently working without the help of IT
which is generating much longer than average wait times.” Those in need of help are urged to contact the emergency call center
“The establishment asks people to avoid coming to the emergency room spontaneously,” the hospital said
Some doctors even took to Facebook to warn potential patients that services were severely limited due to the outages
Agence France-Presse reported on Tuesday that the Paris prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the attack and confirmed that there has been “an attempted extortion by an organized gang.”
French Minister of Health François Braun said they "are working in degraded mode
but for us," but reiterated that patient care "is not endangered."
A source told the news outlet that the ransom note came from the LockBit group. French outlet RMC added that the ransom demand was for $10 million
The national gendarmerie is leading the investigation, according to Le Monde and LeMagIT
because ransomware attack response is split between law enforcement agencies in France
The national police typically deal with ransomware attacks from the Hive and Vice Society gangs while the gendarmerie gets involved with the LockBit or Ragnar Locker ransomware groups
LockBit, a ransomware-as-a-service operation that recently became the most prolific group in terms of publicly-claimed victims, was linked to 58 attacks in July — a slowdown from previous months
But researchers have warned that the group could pick up steam following its launch of “Lockbit 3.0,” which reportedly introduced a bug bounty program and other technical updates
Matt Hull, global lead for strategic threat intelligence at U.K.-based NCC Group
wrote in a report last month that LockBit is likely to take over for Conti as the most prominent — and brazen — ransomware group
Cybersecurity firm Dragos found that LockBit made up 33% of the 125 ransomware attacks on industrial systems in Q2
Their report noted that LockBit is one of the only groups willing to attack the pharmaceutical
The attack on Center Hospital Sud Francilien comes just two weeks after the United Kingdom's National Health Service struggled to cope with a ransomware attack on an IT provider
Several NHS departments faced outages, according to The Guardian
prescriptions and more were impacted by the ransomware attack
Officials told staff members that it will take weeks for the system to be restored

Business [Bio USA] Yposkesi’s 2nd plant to be in full swing in 2025: VP
French unit offers rosy outlook for collaboration with SK Pharmteco
the French contract development and manufacturing arm of Korean biopharmaceutical firm SK pharmteco
expects that its second plant will be at full capacity as the cell and gene therapy market is rapidly evolving
The SK’s clinical and commercial viral vector manufacturing arm for cell and gene therapies is seeking to capitalize on the growing cell and gene therapy market with its new manufacturing plant
the majority equity shareholder of the French CDMO
“Our new facility was designed to be very flexible and adaptable to our customer’s needs … With our current pipeline of programs
we expect this facility will be in high demand and we are very confident it will be running at or near full capacity in 2025,” Patrick Lansky
vice president of US sales and marketing at Yposkesi said during an interview with The Korea Herald on Wednesday while attending the 2023 BIO International Convention
The new site is expected to go online early next year after receiving approval from French regulatory authorities
the new plant will double Yposkesi’s production space in its existing facility to 10,000 square meters
which would become one of the largest advance therapy medicinal products facilities in Europe
A boom seems to be just around the corner for the cell and gene therapy market after overcoming years that funds had been retreating from biotechnology investments
“I believe the cell and gene therapy market is about to experience incredible growth over the next several years
The financial markets in the past couple of years have made it difficult for many of these companies to expand their pipelines and focus more on their lead programs,” he said
the expectation is that at least 10 new cell and gene therapy programs will be approved this year and this should lead to greater investment and overall growth in the sector.”
The size of the global cell and gene therapy market was $18.61 billion in 2022 and is projected to hit around $93.78 billion by 2030
growing at a compound annual growth rate of 22.41 percent during the forecast period
The main customers of the new plant outside of Paris will be those working on therapies that require large amounts of viral vectors
or tools molecular biologists use to deliver genetic material into cells
“We expect this will be mainly gene therapy programs to start with
We have several signed programs at the 1,000-liter scale that will move into this facility in 2024,” he said
As the gene and cell therapy field matures
so does the demand for viral vector manufacturing
in particular for lentivirus vectors -- or LVVs -- and adeno-associated virus -- AAV -- production
two dominant vectors used for gene therapies
will offer cell and gene therapy developers “more consistency” than any other platforms on the market to develop and commercialize their pipelines
vice president of US sales and marketing at Yposkesi
“LentiSure is a robust and scalable platform process that is able to provide a consistent and potent lenti viral vector that companies can use as part of their cell therapy,” he said
“What makes LentiSure different is the time and resources that went into developing this suspension platform and the consistency that this provides," he added
LVVs are used to produce cell-based immuno-oncology therapies
Their robustness as a gene delivery system is vital in determining the success of any cell-based cancer treatment
Founded in 2016 and acquired by SK in 2021
Yposkesi’s earnings account for an insignificant portion of the Korean conglomerate for now
the tie-up gives SK an impetus to bolster its global presence in the CDMO market
also committed $350 million in equity financing to the Philadelphia-based Center for Breakthrough Medicines in the effort to build a global end-to-end cell and gene therapy CDMO
Collaboration with SK and the Center for Breakthrough Medicines offers a unique opportunity to grow our overall business and we have been working with them on several different programs that take advantage of the unique capabilities that each of them are able to offer
“We are still in the early stages of working through how to best do this and expect many more collaborations in the future
has already been through this and are able to offer excellent guidance on how to move forward,” he said

The duo’s beguiling fourth album is riven with loneliness
loss and familial pride – but can it crack the anglophone market
Iman AmraniFri 5 Apr 2019 17.59 CESTLast modified on Fri 5 Apr 2019 18.00 CESTShareIn 2017
French rap duo PNL were poised to take their millions of sales and homegrown stardom international at Coachella
one of the music industry’s last remaining success-minting live platforms
But when brothers Ademo and Nos sought visas
most likely owing to previous drug-related convictions
But PNL’s rise has never been contingent on traditional career moves
French media have often compared them to Daft Punk due to their beguiling
spaced-out cloud rap and their enigmatic brand
Their media strategy has hewed closer to that of Beyoncé: they never do interviews
insisting that “everything is in the music”
and cultivate an aura of mystery that stokes their rabid fanbase
View image in fullscreenThe artwork for Deux Frères
Photograph: Publicity imageAfter their last album
they became the first band to film a music video atop the Eiffel Tower
making it resemble the lifts at the bottom of the estates where drug dealers set up shop
It clocked up more than 12m views in two days and became the first independent French release to reach diamond status
The video illustrates the position in which PNL find themselves: the biggest band in the country, having grown up in the troubled neighbourhood of Les Tarterêts, south of Paris, where they made a living selling hash. Lives such as theirs tend only to be visible in France thanks to music or football
What’s unusual about PNL is that they refuse to glamorise the narrative
a tendency that continues on their fourth album
Their lyrics often unravel as if Ademo and Nos were sitting inside a confession booth
and offer little sense of pride in their background: “I don’t believe anyone lives without regrets,” says Ademo in À l’Ammoniaque
They struggle to align their past with their Muslim faith: “May God forgive us.”
On La Misère Est Si Belle (Misery Is So Beautiful)
“I see my demons but they don’t scare me,” they declare
It’s an unprecedented level of vulnerability for PNL: on previous albums
they would use Disney characters to more subtly allude to loneliness and loss
they couch darker themes still – resentment
revenge – in references to classic video games and sci-fi
Shenmue is named after a 90s adventure series and boasts chiptune production to match; Blanka
named after a savage mutant from Nintendo’s Street Fighter series
is cushioned by a delicate beat and synthesised xylophones that betray the influence of Japanese music
But they’re not aiming for warm nostalgia. The characters they reference are often the bad guys, the misunderstood men or the straightforwardly evil. In the hazy trap track Celsius, Ademo raps about “perching on the edge of the abyss, a bit like Anakin”
They reckon with their own vision of themselves
questioning whether they can be good people after everything they have done
It feels particularly poignant given the demonisation of young men from the French suburbs
Rap bravado doesn’t always leave room for self-reflection
but PNL’s approach is subtle without feeling sentimental
The brothers have previously sung about how their Algerian mother was largely absent from their lives and their Corsican father was a gangster
The Spanish guitar of Hasta La Vista suggests their Mediterranean roots
a nod to their pride in the strength associated with the characters of these two nations (tahia djazair means “long live Algeria” and was an emotive slogan for Algerians amid their struggle for independence from France)
its deployment in the subtly produced Á l’Ammonia ties it to Algerian rai
suggesting a layer of distance from their audience
And from their peers – few other rappers who speak about selling drugs also have such brutally honest songs about love and deeply held emotions
PNL: A l’Ammoniaque – videoSign up for the Sleeve Notes email: music news, bold reviews and unexpected extrasRead moreThe duo already have a firm grip on the francophone world
as streaming-based consumption erodes traditional international barriers
is whether their latest project will see them break the anglophone markets
America’s Latino communities paved the way for Spanish-speaking artists to rise in the US
but francophone artists lack those cultural bridges
PNL have avoided high-profile collaborations
Yet they’re making waves: fashion designer Virgil Abloh is a fan
and they are the first French group to have a single in Spotify’s Top 30 global streams
If anyone from the French music scene is going to crack the code to anglophone markets
their vantage point from the top of the Eiffel Tower suggests they have nothing to worry about

The $100 million facility, due to open in the first quarter of 2018, will replace two smaller facilities and is expected to create more than 100 new UPS jobs
The site will be a showcase for UPS’s automated package sorting technology which minimizes time in transit to final delivery
“France is a key market for UPS and building this new facility south of Paris shows our commitment to the French and European economies,” said Mike Harrell
“Corbeil-Essonnes and Evry are two economic centers in the Essonnes region
with more than 2,000 businesses of all sizes
we’re here to help these companies grow by giving them fast access to markets beyond their region.”
The new South Paris sorting and delivery facility will replace smaller buildings in Chilly-Mazarin and Savigny for small packages and larger freight shipments. It will have an operating area of more than 320,000 square feet and 950 employees. Advanced technology will make it possible to sort up to 37,000 packages per hour
with 125 parking positions for UPS delivery trucks
“We are bullish on Europe’s growth potential and this investment in France – UPS’s largest for the country – is part of our $2 billion investment program currently underway in Europe,” said Nando Cesarone
“With e-commerce and crossborder business on the rise
we are making our most economical crossborder service up to two days faster in 19 European countries
Our customers rely on our network to help them be successful in today’s global economy where crossborder trade represents real growth opportunities.”
“The new UPS hub in Corbeil-Essonnes/Evry will allow French businesses
especially small and medium-sized enterprises
to take advantage of more efficient logistics
as well as export more easily and conquer new markets,” said Manuel Valls
The facility is located in two municipalities
is an opportunity for our area and confirms our attractiveness to business,” said Francois Chouat
“It reinforces the momentum our municipalities have built together to showcase and enhance our strengths
It also recognizes our area as a hub of logistics innovation
The laying of the first stone for this new center and signing the Contract of National Interest are proof of this strength and we hope to continue in this direction
and in the interest of job creation,” Chouat said
“The decision to invest and create new jobs shows this is an attractive area for investment
which is welcome news for the local job market.”
UPS opened a $28 million center in Lyon-Jonage
UPS is also upgrading its network across Europe to offer 24 to 48-hour faster day-definite shipping with UPS Standard
is the most economical when shipping crossborder items
“We have been active participants in the French economy for over 30 years,” said ,” Harrell
“and believe these investments show our commitment to local businesses who trust us every day.”

There are striking similarities between the English riots of August 2011 and the three weeks of French suburban émeutes in October and November 2005.
The French riots provoked a great deal of schadenfreude in the Anglo-Saxon press at the time. They were portrayed as the defeat of an uncompromisingly mono-cultural French approach to immigration. They were even, quite wrongly, described as a kind of Islamist intifada.
The French violence began with the deaths of two teenage boys of Arab origin. Their deaths, after running into an electricity sub-station, were blamed by their friends on the police (rightly, it emerged later). The incident sparked riots in Montfermeil and Clichy-sous-Bois, suburbs north-east of Paris. Long-simmering ill-feeling between the police and local youths caused the violence to spread to other poor suburbs of Paris and, within days, to almost every town and city in France.
The internet and mobile phones were used by the rioters to outwit the authorities. Although called "riots", there were few large mobs and set-piece battles. Over 9,000 cars and 300 public buildings were set alight in the space of 20 days, mostly in hit-and-run attacks.
An official report by the security services later concluded that the violence was inspired by hatred of the police, unemployment, hopelessness and a copy-cat desire to have the same fun as the next town or housing estate.
The French riots began to abate after 7 November 2005 when the government declared a state of emergency and a curfew, which strengthened the hand not just of police but also, crucially, of parents and community leaders. All but the hard-core of rioters – mostly aged between 14 and 19 – were gradually persuaded to stay at home.
The second thing the British authorities could learn from the French is the relative restraint displayed by their riot police. Those calling in Britain for the deployment of soldiers – comparatively untrained in street control – should perhaps think again.

» Mon pote lui a dit direct qu’il me connaissait
