President of the Occitanie/Pyrénées-Méditerranée region; Etienne Guyot
the Préfet of the Occitanie region and its Haute-Garonne department; and Didier Kayat
Daher today inaugurated the Log’In technical center at its Cornebarrieu site near Toulouse, France, which brings human and material resources together to meet the logistics sector’s future challenges – applying a dual approach of eco-responsibility and industrial excellence.
The goal of this project – jointly financed by Daher
the French government and the Occitanie /Pyrénées-Méditerranée Region – is to accelerate the logistics sector’s transformation by responding to technical
human and environmental challenges in an innovative and collaborative framework
Daher is a well-established logistics supplier
providing comprehensive services for a range of customers in Europe
The Log’In technical center is structured around four components that benefit from the input of Daher’s Strategic Orientation Council – which is supported by the expertise of its members with various backgrounds (industrialists, logisticians, institutions, academics, etc.):
Reflecting the collaborative nature of Log’In
the inauguration today brought all of the technical centers’ stakeholders for a privileged moment of meetings and exchanges on specific actions
These actions are aligned with the three main axes of the technical center’s roadmap: warehouse modularity and the adaptation to future needs and evolution (resulting from digitalization and automation); increasingly eco-responsible logistics (including optimizing the energy consumption of buildings along with the application of alternative fuels and reusable packaging; the optimization of flows and movements; the densification of storage
etc.); and the personnel who are at the heart of logistics (training
Today’s event made it possible to assess the progress of the Log’In technical center concept one year after its formal go-ahead in July 2021
said: “Log’in is a project that has materialized with the backing of Daher’s teams and the important support of the Occitanie region and the French government
This technical center will be the spearhead of innovation in the logistics value chain
It showcases how Daher’s technological know-how will better position the logistics sector for the future
which must take climate and energy challenges into account.”
the Préfet of the Occitanie region and its Haute-Garonne department
stated: “The Log’In open platform will enable companies and start-ups from across the spectrum to develop and quickly test innovative logistics solutions in real situations
It also will be a place of learning for new skills
which absolutely will be necessary for tomorrow
This very beneficial space for sharing and experimentation will support the digital transformation of companies in our region
Developing the industry of the future is a priority objective of the French government and a key element in the competitiveness of our businesses
This is the basis for the support of Log’In by the ‘France Relance’ recovery plan
President of the Occitanie/Pyrénées-Méditerranée region
added: “Our region has been engaged in the partnership with Daher since last year to favor the industrial logistics sector’s development and local employment
Daher is a motivator for the entire sector
industrial logistics is a determining factor for our regional companies – which must remain at the forefront
The Log’In platform is a first element of a center of excellence for Industrial Logistics 4.0
It is a structuring project for the entire ecosystem – a true collaborative laboratory of innovation at the service of improved economic and environmental performance
I am proud that such developments will see the light of day in our region
we continue to support – and massively invest – with the goal of ensuring our economic sovereignty.”
Building these twenty social housing units located in the commune of Cornebarrieu
on a budget that could not go beyond 1,150 euros per square meter
presented an excellent opportunity to demonstrate that construction with stone walls is still a feasible option
The last hundred kilometers of the Earth’s crust are composed of stone
so the material is virtually inexhaustible
Preparing it for use in construction is inexpensive because it simply has to be extracted in the quarry
On these premises it was decided that the building should be raised with loadbearing walls 40 centimeters thick
and using limestone ashlar blocks laid on lime mortar
Developed on the basis of its corresponding on-site lifesize drawing
each ashlar was the object of a specific detail: lintels and embrasures for openings; protective cornices for walls
which double as lanes for large doors; and special stones perforated to accommodate pipes for the draining of rainwater
perforated with windows protected against the sun
which works as a passive regulator of temperature and humidity inside
which give it an excellent thermal inertia

French industry leaders gathered in Paris on Tuesday to assess the fallout of the United States' decision to increase customs duties
as part of a coordinated national response
government officials are working to find the best ways to protect jobs and stabilize European supply chains
The moves follow the US confirmation of new tariffs on industrial imports
the duties have been described as a "historic shock" by several business leaders and concerns are mounting over reduced exports
Minister for Industry and Energy Marc Ferracci emphasized the need for a unified approach to safeguard French economic interests and maintain stability
The council agreed to collaborate closely with European partners to formulate proportionate countermeasures while keeping diplomatic channels open in a bid to resolve the escalating trade tensions
The CNI is officially presided over by France's prime minister
with the industry minister acting as a deputy when necessary
At the heart of the nation's concerns is France's aerospace industry
which is a flagship of European engineering
supplying aircraft and components through tightly integrated supply chains
trade has flowed freely without customs barriers
making the US a key market for France's aerospace sector
Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury told Le Figaro on Friday: "It is important to remember that in aeronautics
components and systems have moved freely — that freedom is now under threat."
Ferracci warned that disrupting such integrated supply chains would have direct economic consequences and he stressed the importance of maintaining international cooperation in production and logistics
Ferracci said the crisis could accelerate long-needed economic reforms
"This exceptional situation must become a lever to boost European competitiveness," he said
Ferracci also called on French companies to delay investments in the US
"This is economic patriotism — producing and sourcing in France must become a priority," he said
Tuesday's meeting brought together leaders from sectors including transport
and healthcare and its goal was to assess both the direct and indirect impacts of US tariffs on suppliers and employment across industries
the Ministry of Economy and Finance reported that most participants backed a strong European response
several sectors expressed concern about the potential risks of a full-scale trade confrontation
The EU plans to introduce 25-percent tariffs on scores of goods from almonds to yachts
with the first duties being collected from April 15
while the bulk apply from May 15 and the remainder from Dec 1
products such as bourbon will be excluded to prevent US retaliation against European wine and spirits
A European Commission spokesperson said the bloc's formal response may be announced "early next week."
France supports strengthening the EU's safeguard clause — a trade defense measure introduced in 2018 to protect European steelmakers
France's President Emmanuel Macron has called for a "proportionate" EU response while keeping negotiations open
He is scheduled to lead a Strategic Council on Tariffs on May 13
government spokesperson Sophie Primas has confirmed
Minister Delegate for the Budget and Public Accounts Amelie de Montchalin announced on RMC Radio on Wednesday that the government will set aside 5 billion euros ($5.5 billion) in a precautionary reserve to support affected sectors
"Our objective is that these US tariffs never take effect," she said
adding that France remains committed to reducing its public deficit below 3 percent of GDP
said in an interview with BFM Business on Wednesday that the US tariffs are unlikely to significantly affect inflation within the eurozone
"This is a far bigger shock for the United States than it is for Europe," he said
While the full impact of the tariffs is still being assessed
France has said its strategy will be to balance firmness with diplomacy
The coming weeks will be crucial in shaping Europe's response and ensuring that trade remains stable in an increasingly uncertain global environment
‘All architecture is political,’ says architect and urban designer Philippe Madec
a co-founder of France’s growing ‘frugal’ architecture movement
speaking to one of the country’s leading practitioners of ecological architecture
He has built extensively across France: housing
and many urban design and masterplanning projects which feature abundant green spaces
He also explains why he is no longer interested in Passivhaus
Madec describes how an early encounter with Kenneth Frampton’s critical regionalism shaped his design approach and how the specificity of sites
climate and local materials inform his work

Originally from Brittany, Madec studied architecture in Paris and trained with modernist Henri Ciriani
An extended stay in America in the 1980s included a pivotal encounter with Kenneth Frampton
whose critical regionalism shaped Madec’s future direction
An invitation to teach landscape architecture at Harvard followed
Since founding his practice in 1989 with landscape at its heart, Madec has combined practice with teaching and research. He is the author of 17 books, most recently Mieux avec Moins [Better with Less] (2021), and co-author of the Frugal Architecture Manifesto
