Mourad Merzouki is bringing hip-hop dance to the Paris Olympics
For more Olympics coverage, go to pdne.ws/4fkdqlw
CRETEIL, France — In a sweltering enclosed stage, several dancers perform synchronized routines before scattering, as others practice twisting handstands and tumbles. Amid this, Mourad Merzouki directs them
It's the final day of rehearsals for the renowned French-Algerian choreographer and his energetic group of dancers who are preparing themselves for a huge Olympic Games festivity
Merzouki and his dance troupe will take center stage near the Eiffel Tower in Paris
showcasing the official dance of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games on Monday
The four-day “Dance of the Games” marks a triumphant moment for Merzouki
Merzouki's dance routine is one of three styles featured on the stage at Champions Park
His choreography blends the elements of martial arts
tailored to engage audiences of all ages and abilities
Merzouki remains confident in both himself and his dancers because of the positive message he's trying to convey
because I want everything to go right,” he said
“We want the message of generosity of this dance to raise awareness to as many people as possible
This moment should allow us all to connect.”
From humble beginnings to a global platform
Merzouki’s innovative style took some time to gain widespread appeal
Merzouki was told his dance style wouldn’t resonate or maintain the attention of large audiences in Europe
However, he received a different response while dancing in the United States, in cities such as Miami, Los Angeles and New York, the birthplace of hip-hop. In America
Merzouki’s his unique style was widely embraced
But he chose to return to France to challenge doubters and break down barriers
Merzouki eventually succeeded in doing just that
His company has had more than 4,000 performances in France and more than 60 other countries in a three-decade span
“I think that this recognition is due to these 30 years that we have all spent fighting
“It’s so that precisely this dance can have a place like any other dance in the choreographic landscape.”
Merzouki has kept his routines fresh with an open mind while selecting dancers — even asking those interested to submit dance videos via YouTube
He’s worked with reliable dancers and inserted new ones too with backgrounds in hip-hop
“It's a a sign that this dance can be addressed to all audiences,” he continued
I think we can say that it's an honor and that it's encouraging for the future of this dance.”
French dancer Joël Luzolo called Merzouki an influential figure who brought his dance style from the streets to the theater
He said many dancers wouldn't have sustainable careers without Merzouki's impact
who has danced for Merzouki for five years
he tries to raise the level even higher to make people understand what hip-hop is and what it can be
It can help dancers with having a career and life.”
Merzouki is grateful for the reemergence of the breakdancing culture, which is debuting as competitive event during the Paris Games — though some in Paris' local breaking scene were skeptical of the subculture being coopted by officials
commercialized and put through the rigid judging structure
But I think it’s very good news that breaking was propelled to the forefront into such an important event,” he said
“The DNA of breaking and hip-hop dance is competition
It’s a continuation of this great story of hip-hop
I hope the visibility will allow this dance to be better recognized and reach a larger
Merzouki will focus on his new show called “Beauséjour” in Lyon
He has upcoming projects with different orchestras
collaborating with several artists and just creating as much as possible
Merzouki is ready to present his artistic dance to the Olympic world
can discover a new discipline they necessarily didn’t know,” he said

For its 6th park at the Base de loisirs de Créteil, in the Val-de-Marne region of France, AccroCamp is offering an original
The group has already inaugurated a similar structure on theJablines-Annet leisure island in the Seine-et-Marne region in 2021
This method makes it possible to set up an accrobranche park in any environment
with original workshops and varying levels of difficulty depending on the height
This accrobranche offers 3 levels of courses : green
But the special feature of this spot is its giant net course
allowing little ones to jump and run around in complete safety
At AccroCamp Créteil
The park opened its gates on June 29, 2022, and reservations are now open
It's the ideal time to organize an adventure outing with your children or friends
Don't forget to book - it'll cost you less than on site
In short, this is an ideal outing for families, friends or even colleagues, to get together and enjoy the fresh air while doing a bit of sport on the Tyroliennes
And don't leave without going down the big slide
Note that the park is open daily from 10am to 7pm throughout the summer

the future plant will use the electricity generated by the incineration of household waste from the 19 communes2 of the SMITDUVM to produce renewable hydrogen by electrolysis of water
which operates the Créteil energy-from-waste facility
is providing the land on which the hydrogen production and distribution equipment will be installed
The SUEZ group will also supply the water and renewable electricity required for hydrogen production
which will contribute its expertise in legal structuring in addition to its financial participation, SUEZ will finance the majority of the project and manage the construction of the station
an implementing partner of the European Commission's CEF Transport Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility programme
is providing the remainder of the project's equity requirements
the station will produce 1 tonne of renewable hydrogen per day
it will be able to double its production and distribute up to two tonnes per day
The Créteil site is ideally suited to the development of hydrogen mobility
Its geographical location is a major advantage: it's close to a major road junction (A86
RN 6 and RN 406) and numerous commercial areas
It's also only a dozen kilometres from Paris
hydrogen-powered vehicles will be able to operate in the low emission zone of the Greater Paris area and beyond without any pollution at the vehicle's exhaust system
is one of the first to produce hydrogen locally from renewable sources at a price competitive with diesel
It will prevent the emission of around 1,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year.
This hydrogen plant is part of the development plan launched several years ago by SMITDUVM at its Créteil energy-from-waste facility to improve its environmental performance
which already produces heat for Créteil's district heating network and electricity for sale to the public grid
This project is supported and financed by ADEME
the Ile-de-France Region and the European Commission
It illustrates the determination of local authorities to develop alternative energies in order to accelerate their ecological transition.
With the exception of four neighboring communes in the Bois de Vincennes
which will see the cycling time trial events pass quickly by
Val-de-Marne will not be included in the main routes of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games
the département will have the honor of hosting the Olympic flame
this flame will cross France to make a stop in Val-de-Marne
honoring Créteil and its 15 neighboring communes in a spectacular procession
With 20 local torchbearers in the spotlight
including seven designated by the municipal and departmental authorities
the Olympic flame will wind its way through the city's main thoroughfares
from the Préfecture to the Duvauchelle stadium
via emblematic sites such as the Maison du handball
The day will be punctuated by Tout Créteil en sport
a popular celebration that will see the city come alive with a host of sporting and cultural activities
the fruit of a collaboration with US Créteil
socio-cultural facilities and local residents in a joyous parade to the prefecture
An exhibition retracing the exploits of Créteil's great Olympic champions will add a historical dimension to the event
A super fan zone will be set up in Créteil
on a soccer pitch adjoining the Duvauchelle stadium
set up by the French Handball Federation (FFH) and accredited by the Games organizing committee
will be able to accommodate up to 2,000 people a day throughout the competition
the Olympic Games will take place from July 26 to August 11
and the site will be open from 10am to 10pm
This fan zone will offer total immersion in the world of the Games
with live broadcasts of the competitions on giant screens
introductions to various sports and an international beach handball tournament
concerts and food trucks will complete the offer for a festive and convivial experience
The Paris 2024 Games are intended to be a national celebration
with a particular focus on the Île-de-France region
The establishment of this fan zone in Créteil
in conjunction with the " Club 2024 " label
bears witness to the city's commitment to the Olympic adventure
offering a space for gathering and sharing to experience this global event to the full
The summer of 2024 promises to be an exceptional one for Créteil
which is preparing to live to the rhythm of the Olympic and Paralympic Games
celebrating sport and fraternity in a festive and inclusive atmosphere
Alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health
The European Rugby Cup returns for a new edition of the Champions Cup, with a multi-pool format, i.e. four pools of six clubs, and the disappearance of round-trip confrontations. Racing 92 will be taking up this challenge at home, but not at the Paris La Défense Arena
as they will still be accompanied by their fervent supporters
who reached the semi-finals of the competition last season
but the Parisians have every chance during this encounter
which is already shaping up to be a fiery one
The last time the two teams met was in December 2023
Three times finalists in recent years, the Ciel et Blanc have made this competition one of their major objectives and are determined to win it! There may not be a Crazy or Family tribune at the Dominique Duvauchelle stadium
but the fans are more than welcome to give their all against the in-form opposition
hopefully back at La Défense on January 18
they'll have to face the South African Stormers
In the Paris region, accrobranches have multiplied, and the Val-de-Marne had escaped this popular activity during fine weather. In March 2019, the damage has been done by the arrival of the first accrobranche park in the 94 region: Ecopark Adventures Créteil Pompadour
in the Parc Interdépartemental des Sports Paris - Val de Marne
this accrobranche park offers vertiginous courses in a green setting
punctuated by around a hundredactivities and zip lines
there are a total of 8 courses of varying levels of difficulty
There's something for everyone: families enjoy an adventurous getaway
while thrill-seekers enjoy activities up to 15 metres high
There are also six zip lines crossing the water basin
The longest of these stretches 140 metres above the water
Please note: textile gloves must be worn on the courses (gardening
Good news: the park will be open every day from 10.30am to 4.45pm from Saturday February 15, 2025, after a winter closure. A great idea for an original activity for the February, spring and summer vacations

Text description provided by the architects. In 2009, on the initiative of Bishop Santier, the diocesan association of Créteil, supported by the Chantiers du Cardinal, opted for an ambitious project to expand the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Créteil. Conceived by Charles-Gustave Stoskopf, holder of the Prix de Rome, this architecture is typical of the 1970s when “the theology of blending-in” prevailed at the time. It is part of the contemporary heritage of the City of Créteil.
The commission was to double the capacity of the cathedral and to enhance its visibility towards the city. More than a renovation, this project involved a major redevelopment of the cathedral, giving it a new architectural lease on life from a symbolic and pastoral point of view. The new cathedral is anchored in a multicultural city, which includes five Catholic churches, ten synagogues, a mosque, a Protestant church, four Evangelical churches, a Buddhist temple and a Bahai assembly.
A dialogue between two different architectural styles, yet consistent, is established. The dome pointing skywards is based on the footprint of the original cathedral. The silhouette of the entrance, on a human scale, is now joined with the monumental proportions of the new project, focusing on the nave of the cathedral that extends from two spherical wood-clad hulls, like two hands joined in prayer that meet above the altar.
Master PlanLarge gatherings can be held in this new space. The existing sanctuary has been remodeled and the benches are placed in a broad semicircle. In daylight, the stained-glass window located at the junction of the two hulls shed a colored light onto the sanctuary, while at night, illuminated from inside, they become the symbol of a living Christian community.
© Luc BoeglyA SPACE STRUCTURED BY THE LITURGY
The white architecture of Stoskopf serves as the setting for the new cathedral, clad all in wood, inside and out. This unity of material refers back to the ancient cathedrals, where the mass of these stone vessels was cut and chiseled by the light. This allows a straightforward reading of the two layers of the building, but most importantly, stands for unity and simplicity.
© Luc BoeglyThe repetition of spruce arches gives rhythm to the interior decorative style of the hulls. The intention here is not to offer an optimal structure, calculated to the finest degree, nor to display any technical prowess, but to characterise the density of a sacramental space. There are as many arches as intertwinning possibilities at the top of the dome. The boat of Peter, fisher of souls, is also suggested here.
Outside, the cladding of the hull and the steeple are also handled in wood, following the same parallel geometry of the arches. The wooden strips of Douglas fir are pre-shaded to ensure an aesthetically uniform ageing. Wood is a natural, living material, at once humble and noble. It lends itself perfectly to the design of the building’s curves. Its warmth also serves as a pattern of a fraternal community, united in the celebration of the sacraments of the Church.
The main structure of the timber framing is composed of approximately 130 glue-laminated arches (16x75cm) ; the longest extrados arch is 26.5 metres and the smallest bending radius is 6 metres
The arches are arranged in a system of parallel beams placed 56cm from one another
The arches are jointed on the bottom by fittings
The coupling on the top of the two hulls is achieved by assembling alternately the northern and southern arches resting on a connecting laminated glued beam with fittings
The roof deck batten is then attached directly to the main structure; the cross-laying of battens allows them to bending on the glued laminated arches

If Ernest Hemingway made Paris a moveable feast
architect Gérard Grandval made its Créteil suburb the vegetable course
Built during the 1970s, the Créteil Cabbages
or “Choux de Créteil,” are French Brutalism at its finest
The ‘utopian’ residency is composed of 10 otherworldly buildings whose balconies extend like giant
“the cabbages” or “sprouts.” We’ve also seen them described as “artichokes” and “corn on the cob.” Whichever your legume of choice
this veggie village perfectly captures the French Modernist interpretation of Utopia…
vegetable utopia might look like it rolled out of a Stanley Kubrick film set
but it was in fact the dream project of French architect Gérard Grandval
architecture had been about building for many
and championed an “organic design” philosophy when drafting plans for the city’s new social housing.“The flower is my anti-cube,” he said about the site
Créteil was my chance to do something different.”
A kind of village-in-the-city that included parking
The pathways in between the buildings were all curved
subterranean storage lockers at the feet of the buildings
The balconies were intended to be vegetated
transform the concrete structures into liveable
Grandval said he actually drew inspiration from Dahlias while drafting up the plans
but that locals “thought the buildings looked like cabbages or cauliflower
so the name stuck” A natural comparison
given that the region was a large producer of the staple French veggie
The government also gave Grandval just three weeks to draw up the structures
“other than its cabbage production.” The buildings made quite a stir
and not everyone was a fan of Grandval’s breed of utopia
where the living quarters were rather tight
Just as Parisians were initially put-off by the Eiffel tower and Art Nouveau metro stops
pseudo-intellectual fantasy that left little room for individuality
dizzying structures unfit for creating a diverse community
vapid couple around the otherwise empty complex:
“Why would you leave?” says the woman with a severe bob and blue eyeshadow
“I’ve greatly cultivated my tastes since living here,” interjects the man
and take a long drag from their cigarettes in a sigh
It’s true that the utopia didn’t quite work out as planned
and the balconies never became sprawling with plant life
the surrounding area’s other social housing towers also began to lose their luster
the pastel-coloured buildings of the neighborhood started to look rather eerie
the city decided to inject new life into the complex
and designated a portion of it’s narrow apartments to students
the government finally classified the site as a historic landmark
the Créteil Cabbages are seen as a beloved
testament to the groovy French idealism of the 1970s
P.S. Digging French utopian villages? Here’s another gem from Paris

we may be able to surf without a 3-hour train journey
At first sight, the project may seem totally utopian, but the future possibility of enjoying a good surf session just 20 minutes from the capital is well and truly real. With the Okihana Wave project
WaveRiding Solutions is aiming to create a “semi-natural wave” right in the heart of the Lac de Créteil
making it possible to surf using an environmentally-friendly solution
will we be able to break out the boards and wax in the Paris region in a few years’ time
No time to take the train to the Atlantic coast
No desire to opt for polluting artificial waves
because you may soon be able to find the right alternative for surfing without having to leave the Paris region
Okahina Wave offers an on-site installation inspired by Polynesian atolls
making it possible to surf on any body of water
it will be possible to surf waves of gradual difficulty
This means that beginners can learn to surf just as seasoned surfers can train
The system’s main strength is its low energy consumption
equivalent to “that of a 150-cover pizzeria”
It should also be noted that no waves will propagate beyond the wave zone
thus having no impact on the surrounding biodiversity

When the original Paris metro system was built more than a century ago
it connected all the most vital parts of the city
Now outlying neighborhoods are home to Europe’s largest business district
and areas with denser populations than Paris itself
The Grand Paris Express (GPE) aims to ease travel to and from these outlying neighborhoods by adding four new metro lines
and adding 65 additional stations to the greater Paris metro area — also known as the Île-de-France
the system will enable travel among important outlying areas without going through Paris in the center
It will also effectively double the size of the Paris metro system
The Grand Paris Express is taking BIM for infrastructure to a whole new level
Although it’s a historic project by any measure
it’s also one of the first infrastructure projects of this scale to use Building Information Modeling (BIM) from start to finish
With six architectural and civil engineering design firms participating in the project
and all of them producing 3D models instead of traditional 2D design content
the Grand Paris Express is taking BIM for infrastructure to a whole new level
This paradigm shift requires new and evolved methods and tools
Autodesk software applications such as AutoCAD Civil 3D civil engineering design and documentation software
and Revit BIM software played a major role in enabling the rich 3D modeling and cross-project collaboration that are fundamental to the BIM process
a civil engineer with Autodesk providing technical support on the project
“While BIM has seen wide adoption for architecture
infrastructure has been several years behind.”
an international engineering firm headquartered in Paris
is responsible for several parts of the project
several stations and a rail maintenance facility
It’s the first time for everyone at the firm using BIM in this way
and there continue to be many lessons learned
Because it runs through a densely developed and populated urban/suburban environment
roughly three-fourths of the GPE will be underground
and not just a bit underground — as much as 40 meters below the surface in some places
Wells dug every 800 meters provide ventilation and access during emergency situations
and man-made structures in and around the project was a real challenge
It enables engineers and developers to visualize the subterranean features more easily
compared with the previous process of making numerous 2D sections or cuts
and provided a clearer representation of how the tunnels
utilities and ancillary structures all fit together
it enables them to provide a clear picture of how all the components interact and behave with each other
even the most non-technical stakeholders can understand the design intent
one can easily see and simulate where water would flow or smoke and fumes will rise
Adding another fault to the geotechnical data was so easy “the geotechnical engineer’s jaw dropped,” says Kuhns
it would have taken many hours to generate a revised set of drawings
we entered the new data and updated the model in a matter of seconds.”
And building as many as six stories underground placed large structural constraints on design and execution
“It’s difficult to get light to go down six stories,” notes Sylvie Cassan
head of BIM deployment and development for SYSTRA
“it was much easier and very interesting to see all the constraints in one view.”
Such a massive and unified model is a first for every firm involved
All the BIM data from every firm involved in the project has been consolidated into one vast 3D digital model
and if you go to the offices of the Société du Grand Paris
It covers an area of 12,000 square kilometers
with digital models of more than 1 million buildings and 200 kilometers of new tunnels
“It wasn’t a question of whether it was faster or slower [with BIM],” says Lionel Fabre
“The challenge was simply to achieve it at all
Each aspect of the project is in a different stage of completion
although construction is underway for most of them
The first part of the system is expected to open for business in 2022

Founded in 1979, the International Women's Film Festival welcomes women directors from all over the world every year, with many films that defend women's view of their society. In 2024, for its 46th edition, it has chosen a highly symbolic theme:"Olympe se bouge!". The festival will be held in Créteil from March 15 to 24, at the Maison des Arts et de la Culture and La Lucarne cinema
Faithful to its commitment to fight against all forms of discrimination
the festival assumes its dual heritage of feminism and cultural action
placing the questioning of images and modes of representation at the heart of its reflections
The program continues to feature never-before-seen films
just under a hundred short and feature-length films will be screened

with the draw procedure seeing the teams in Pot 6 drawn first
as the reigning Olympic champions were in Pot 4
with the other side in both the men's and the women's competition heading into the other group
the draw was carried out by former France left wing Siraba Dembélé
the second most capped player in France’s history
with 291 matches and the second best scorer
plus a silver medallist at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games
Group A looks already like a very well-balanced one
including former Olympic champions Croatia and Germany
as well as perennial contenders Spain and Sweden
with the latter two sides meeting in the 2023 IHF Men’s World Championship bronze medal match
as the coach which qualified the Asian side
after taking over Croatia men’s national team last February
three of the top four placed sides at Tokyo 2020 – France
Paris 2024 Olympic Games – men’s competition
and the all-time top goal scorer of the France men’s national team
the three most decorated teams in the history of the Olympic Games – Denmark
Norway and the Republic of Korea – were drawn together
as all three Scandinavian sides were drawn in the same group
and we hope to win Group B and I think if France were in Group A
it would have been a very unbalanced preliminary round
Group A boasts teams which won eight of the 12 Olympic titles in the history of the competition
with the women’s competition being introduced at Montreal 1976
France will face three teams which secured their tickets to Paris 2024 via the Olympic Qualification Tournaments – winners Netherlands and Hungary
plus the second-placed side in the Olympic Qualification Tournament #2
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will start on 25 July
as the men’s competition is due to start two days later
The groups will be played in the South Paris Arena 6
while the knockout phase is hosted by the Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille
The women’s gold medal match will take place on Saturday
while the men’s gold medal match is scheduled one day later
