Here’s five things we learned from the performance and result The Australian manager sprang a surprise by selecting Ada Hegerberg at 9 and moving Melchie Dumornay into midfield dropping Danielle van de Donk from the starting XI He also started Wendie Renard for her 500th Lyon game instead of youngster Alice Sombath who had played well at the Emirates Stadium Renee Slegers reinstated Daphne van Domselaar in goal while Chloe Kelly came onto the wing for Beth Mead I actually thought Caitlin Foord would be dropped after her poor performance at the Emirates as the Australian winger performed superbly in Lyon just as she did in the previous 5–1 away win Lyon posed a three-pronged fast attacking threat with players frequently threatening to run behind the Arsenal defence a player who does most of her damage inside the penalty area Arsenal were allowed to defend with a higher line than last week putting far more pressure on Lyon‘s build-up play effectively cutting the supply line to the Lyon forwards and Frida Maanum pressing well alongside the front three against Selma Bacha Arsenal were able to completely disrupt Lyon‘s attacking scheme marking the most UK travellers ever for a game There were even more away fans (over 1,000) in Oslo overall as the Arsenal supporters’ group is particularly strong in Scandinavia It is a long way from when I used to be the sole away fan at some European games in the early 2000s The adventure began at Meadow Park in September with a four-team mini-tournament and wins against Rangers (6–0) and Rosenborg (1–0) they lost 1–0 away to Häcken but triumphed 4–0 in the home leg to qualify for the group stage setting up a quarter-final tie against group runner-up Real Madrid The Spanish team won 2–0 at home on a horrible but Arsenal overpowered them 3–0 at the Emirates Stadium on a perfect surface but Arsenal found the resources to win 4–1 away at the Groupama Stadium The final will take place in Lisbon against a Barcelona side that destroyed Chelsea 8–2 on aggregate It will be the ultimate test for Renee Slegers and her troops England will now finish second in the five-year association ranking and therefore will qualify two teams directly for the League phase in 2026/27 as avoiding a qualifying round allows for better pre-season planning and recruitment Renee Slegers excels at adapting and tweaking tactics to improve her team We have seen twice in the Champions League knock-out stage that the team managed to overturn a deficit from the first leg to advance She has consistently demonstrated an ability to deeply analyse matches and make smart adjustments to both tactics and personnel She is also known for early second-half substitutions if things do not go according to plan alongside the players’ buy-in and their ability to shift into multiple roles when needed a single substitution triggers positional changes for three or four players during a game with the Brazilian outfit also part of the Eagle Football Group portfolio – as well as a 45 % share in Premier League side Crystal Palace to balance the books Despite the American businessman’s confidence that the meeting with the DNCG went well the financial watchdog evidently did not agree Lyon will be relegated to Ligue 2 if their financial situation does not improve dramatically Les Gones might be forced to sell their prized assets including France U21 international attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki (21) or Belgian international winger Malick Fofana (19) on a cheap this winter transfer window A 4-1 victory on the night saw the Gunners claim a 5-3 aggregate triumph and book a place in the final against Barcelona Entering the second leg trailing 2-1 after the first meeting at the Emirates Arsenal needed an extraordinary display and delivered just that against a Lyon side that last conceded four goals in 2022 when Arsenal put five past them Arsenal came out firing from the very first whistle and struck inside five minutes when a calamitous own goal from Christiane Endler put Arsenal ahead from a corner Mariona Caldentey doubled the lead with a spectacular strike from outside the box The second half brought no respite for Lyon finishing from a tight angle after a clever pass from Frida Maanum Caitlin Foord then made it four with a ruthless finish after a Lyon defender slipped Lyon managed a late consolation through Melchie Dumornay when Arsenal switched off “We all can’t wait to represent this great club in the final.” Asked if she thought Arsenal could beat Barcelona their quest for a ninth Champions League crown ending in brutal fashion at home the win secures their first final appearance since 2007 They will now meet reigning champions Barcelona in Lisbon on Saturday Hans Zimmer Live sera à la LDLC Arena de advantage in the tie against PSG PSG held a two-goal lead early in the second half thanks to a Marie-Antoinette Katoto brace Melchie Dumornay and Amel Majri – all after the 80th minute – saw Lyon overhaul the deficit and take the lead heading into the second leg Ellie Carpenter played the full match at right-back for Lyon and picked up an assist for the first goal Clare Hunt remains unavailable for PSG through injury The WSL is reaching the business end of the season and the stakes are getting higher on both sides of the ladder Everton picked up a crucial away win against Brighton & Hove Albion Tatiana Pinto equalised for Brighton after Everton took the lead through Karen Holmgaard in the second half a late own goal meant that Everton took the lead Clare Wheeler started and played the full match in midfield for the Toffees Teagan Micah kept a crucial clean sheet as Liverpool defeated Bristol City 1-0 on Saturday A goal to Marie Höbinger was enough for the Reds to secure the result against a Bristol that looked more and more destined for relegation – they would need to win all three of their final games in order to have any chance of staying in the WSL next season equal on points with Manchester United in fourth It was Micah’s fifth appearance for Liverpool in the WSL Manchester United relied on a stoppage-time equaliser from Maya Le Tissier to draw against Tottenham Hotspur the team who will be their FA Cup final opponents next month Melvine Malard gave United the lead early before a quickfire double to Bethany England and Jessica Naz put Spurs in front They would remain that way until the 92nd minute when Le Tissier’s goal rescued a point for United It leaves plenty to think about as both teams prepare for the next time they meet when there will be silverware on the line Charli Grant was an unused substitute for Tottenham Arsenal made light work of Leicester City on the weekend A brace to Beth Mead on either side of an Alessia Russo goal was enough to reward the Gunners' dominance with three points Steph Catley played the full match for Arsenal at centre-back and assisted Russo’s goal with a brilliant run up the middle while Caitlin Foord got the assist for Mead’s first before being replaced in the 82nd minute Kyra Cooney-Cross remains unavailable with a minor knock Manchester City kept up their side of the title race bargain with a 5-0 thrashing of West Ham Leila Ouahabi’s goal in the first minute was a sign of things to come as a Khadija Shaw brace followed by late goals to Laura Blindkilde and Jess Park In a season where goal difference may come into play to decide the champions Alanna Kennedy and Mary Fowler both started and played the full match for City while it was a match to forget for Mackenzie Arnold in goals for the Hammers Katrina Gorry remains injured for the rest of the season for West Ham Three first-half goals to their opponents meant that Kristianstads DFF suffered their first home Kristianstads San Diego Wave were defeated 1-0 by a dominant Orlando Pride on Saturday (AEST) Casey Stoney’s side were unable to overcome a first-half goal from Summer Yates and will have plenty to Nordsjælland have gone to the top of the Elitedivisionen Josefine Funch and Anna Christine Walter were on the scoresheet as they came from behind to secure the all-important three points prompting some pundits to envisage an economic windfall as fans flock to dozens of sold-out shows from Dublin to Vienna and beyond along with the Olympics Games in France and the Euro 2024 soccer championship in Germany will provide a shot in the arm for a continent that has just skirted recession for most of the past two years and badly lagged the United States But there is one problem: "Swiftonomics" is not actually real She may be a megastar revolutionising the music industry you will need a magnifying glass to spot the economic benefit Close to 180,000 fans attended her three shows in May with half of them coming from abroad and generating close to NZ$131.6 million in turnover for the city That is a great three-day haul for Stockholm but a drop in a bucket even for the modestly-sized Swedish economy which ranks eighth in the European Union with annual output of NZD$1 trillion "This extra turnover is a great weekend boost for Stockholm and in particular the Chief Economist at the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce with no visible or significant impact on overall economic growth." Hotels and restaurants made a killing and even cowboy hat sales surged 155 percent The impact on prices is similarly invisible and could even be smaller than when Beyoncé performed in the city a year earlier Swedish inflation has since fallen from 10 percent to just over 2 percent now "There is copious research in the run-up to big events outlining the economic benefits but after the fact you need a magnifying glass to find these so-called benefits in the numbers," Brzeski said The verdict is the same for the Olympics or Euro 2024 beer sales and sellers of "merch" but do not durably affect consumption patterns "The consumer spending that occurs is expenditure that would happen anyway and tends to be a form of substitution," explained Professor Simon Shibli at Sheffield Hallam University The argument is that cash spent on a concert ticket or a hotel would come from a family's budget meaning there would be less left for other expenditure Danske Bank's tongue-in-cheek "draft beer index" showed massive surges when Denmark played its previous European Championship - topping out at a 106 percent rise in pub and restaurant receipts for a game against England compared to the usual take such events do provide a boost but even that is small and temporary," Danske's Piet Haines Christiansen said like for hotels and catering wherever Taylor Swift goes or for beer sales in countries that are playing football." Some local media last month jumped on Barclays research about the spending habits of Swifties to suggest her concerts would bring in one billion sterling for the UK economy But besides the likely substitution effect they have on other spending there is also the fact that much of the income from the Swift tour will end up in the United States - muting an already small local economic benefit For economies the size of Britain or those in continental Europe any such transfers would not move the dial on their trade ledgers either: the 20-country euro zone had a balance of exports over imports of no less than NZ$68.5 billion in April alone Taylor Swift is one of the world's most famous musicians AUT radio student Zane Moran talks to Swifties to understand why and to see if he can become a Swiftie himself of running an illegal monopoly over live events in America Here's what the record-breaking singer has in common with the Beatles The Axis Chord Progression is a run of four chords named after Aussie music-comedy trio Axis Of Awesome World RSS Follow RNZ News Subscribers Only Have you subscribed yet? He catches the shot well and forces a fingertip save from Samba Mbappe had all the time and space to put the Germany backline under pressure with his cross but instead who will collect those kind of crosses all night long It has been a poor performance from the French team in the second-half Les Blues have hardly created proper chances Germany look the likelier team to score the next goal and kill the match Andrich goes for a shot from distance but it was always going to be a difficult one because there were so many bodies inside the box France booking: Rabiot becomes the latest player to see a yellow card Germany booking: Robert Andrich becomes the first player to get booked as he sees a yellow card for dissent France booking: Mbappe has also seen a yellow card for getting in a minor tussle with Andrich The referee blew his whistle after he fouled Mbappe but the German player argued with the referee saying the contact was not enough for the player to go down ICYMI: Julian Nagelsmann was also shown a yellow card earlier in the match for his antics on the touchline Havertz shows good vision to find Gundogan between a sea of blue shirts at the edge of the France box Gundogan gets to the ball but he is crowded out before he could take the shot and the Germany captain eventually loses the ball Havertz spots the loose ball inside the France box and makes a run for it But Rabiot gets to the ball before Havertz sending it out of play with a sliding clearance as the latter makes a darting run towards the France goal Samba comes off his line to narrow the angle but he is not troubled as Upamecano does well to put pressure on Musiala not allowing his Bayern Munich teammate to take a shot Mbappe has the pace and trickery to beat his marker Antonio Rudiger but his final ball is disappointing as his low cross inside the Germany box goes straight to Ter Stegen Dembele makes a good run and cuts in at the edge of the box trying to find the far-corner with a curling shot It is not the worst of efforts but the bend on the ball was not enough to rattle the net who squares the ball in the hope of finding a teammate But Benjamin Pavard is there to anticipate the cross and clear the ball to safety France finds itself on the backfoot early in the second-half Havertz’s goal has clearly put Germany in a good position to win this clash We can expect some changes from Deshchamsps really soon Wirtz shows his class to pick out Musiala with an excellent through ball over the top Musiala shows immaculate control in bringing down the ball inside the France penalty-area He has the composure to take the ball around Samba and square the ball to Havertz in the middle who lashes the ball inside the net with the easiest of finishes Germany makes a fast start in the second-half Havertz gets the ball after getting at the end of a cross from the left He shoots at goal but pulls his effort a bit Germany with a 1-0 lead against France as the second-half gets underway at the Groupama Stadium No added time at the end of the first-half keeps Germany in a 1-0 lead against France at the break Stay tuned for live updates from the second-half Germany dominated the first 15 minutes or so but France has come out all guns blazing and come close to equalising on a couple of occasions It seems unlikely that the match would finish with a 1-0 scoreline Wirtz gets the ball at the edge of the box and rolls it to his right in space for Kimmich The latter goes for a first-time shot but fails to keep his effort on target France coming closer and closer to getting the equaliser who tries to guide the ball inside the net from close distance but fails to so amidst pressure Joshua Kimmich tries to find Musiala with a through ball but the weight of the ball is too much for Musiala Upamecano gets to the ball and shows his strength to shield the ball from Musiala till the ball goes out of play It is Germany’s time to attack and Jamal Musiala leads it Musiala gets in the box and goes for a shot from the right side of the box ButMusiala’s Bayern Munich teammate Upamecano arrives in time to make the block for France Dembele sends in an accurate cross inside the box from a freekick Tchouameni gets at the end of the cross and tries to guide the ball towards the far-corner with a first-time effort Gundogan does well to clear the ball to safety Mbappe tries to conjure something in a tight space He gets past his marker inside the box and sends in a floating cross towards the middle in the hope of finding a teammate But the German backline is alert enough to anticipate the cross and clear the ball to safety It seems France is finally finding its footing in the match Mbappe puts on the afterburners and makes a run at goal He makes his way inside the box from the left and Ter Stegen comes off his line to narrow down the angle trying to dink Ter Stegen but the German keeper reads it and gets a hand to it to make the save Dembele puts the German backline under pressure again and does well to find Mbappe with a low cross from the right Mbappe shows good control to bring down the ball and has a shot at goal Dembele twists and turns past his marker and tries to find a teammate with a cutback but he cannot find a blue shirt as Germany clears the ball to safety Thuram gets the ball after a deflection and tries to trouble Ter Stegen But he cannot keep his shot down as the ball sails above the crossbar The goal came earlier than Lukas Podolski’s for Germany against Ecuador in 2013 when the forward pinched the ball from a defender and scored seven seconds into the match that early goal seems to have given a lot of momentum to the Germans France cannot find any openings for a possible equaliser Mbappe tries to send club teammate Warren Zaire Emery on the run with a backheel but cannot pull it off Kylian Mbappe looks to get himself involved for the first time in the match as he tries to cut in from the left but he cannot control the ball Wirtz makes another run at goal and tries to find Kai Havertz inside the France box But Wirtz’s pass is cut out and Les Blues get the ball to safety Didier Deschamps’ team has been rocked with the fast start and the Germans are on a high at the moment Germany has had the best possible start it could have hoped for Toni Kroos finds Florian Wirtz after Germany kicked-off the match 2016 at 20:15Cristiano Ronaldo broke his Euro 2016 duck as Portugal drew 3-3 with Group F winners Hungary to secure their passage through to the last 16 Portugal came from behind three times in a breathless tie in Lyon and progress as one of the four best third-placed teams Hungary have been one of the surprise packages of the tournament with a win over Austria and draw with Iceland guaranteeing their progress prior to this match Coach Bernd Storck made five changes to his side but they certainly did not rest on their laurels and took the lead in the 19th minute through one of the goals of the tournament from Zoltan Gera Nani levelled matters just before half-time and a crazy 17-minute spell after the break saw Hungary captain Balazs Dzsudzsak twice put them back into the lead only for Ronaldo to cancel it out both times the Real Madrid star found the net with his 24th effort of the tournament to become the first player to score at four different European Championship finals Portugal had been held to draws by both Iceland and Austria and their hopes of reaching the last 16 were dealt a blow when Gera struck The 37-year-old Ferencvaros playmaker controlled the ball 25 yards out after a corner was half cleared by Nani before sending a superbly-struck half-volley arrowing into the bottom corner Hungary might have added a second five minutes later after a defensive mix-up allowed Akos Elek a clear sight of goal but goalkeeper Rui Patricio kept out his shot Ronaldo's first sight of goal came from a free-kick but it was pushed behind by Gabor Kiraly who was wearing his customary grey tracksuit bottoms despite the 30-degree temperatures Portugal were then correctly denied by the offside flag but two minutes later they did find their equaliser Ronaldo turning provider with a perfect through ball for Nani to beat Kiraly at his near post Both sides made changes at the break - Renato Sanches coming on for Joao Moutinho for Portugal while Barnabas Bese yards out to the right of goal and his deflected strike beat Patricio Gergo Lovrencsics then shot into the side-netting as Hungary threatened again but their lead lasted only three minutes before Ronaldo struck The 31-year-old - who set another record by playing in his 17th match at European Championship finals surpassing Lilian Thuram and Edwin van der Sar - produced a typically sublime piece of skill as he met Joao Mario's cross with a back flick But five minutes later Hungary scored again and it was another deflected strike from Dzsudzsak This time his free-kick from an almost identical spot was blocked by the wall but the ball came back to him and he was allowed time and space to cut inside and find the far corner Portugal boss Fernando Santos sent on Ricardo Quaresma who had been left out of the starting line-up and with virtually his first touch he provided a perfect cross for Ronaldo to head in yet another equaliser Portugal exerted most of the late pressure
