Attending Honey Dijon's House Nation at Drumsheds was nothing short of magic the energy was insane—this wasn’t just a night out She wasn’t just playing music—she was crafting an experience and basslines had the crowd moving non-stop It was one of those sets where you don’t even realize how much time has passed because you’re too busy losing yourself to the rhythm and she knows exactly how to work the crowd the real magic happened when Erykah Badu—yes the Erykah Badu—took over the decks under her DJ moniker Erykah brought a whole new vibe to the night with her soul-stirring Her mix of neo-soul and electronic beats was hypnotic There was something so special about seeing her take over the turntables and it was one of those “I can’t believe this is happening” moments Detroit legends Carl Craig and Omar S dropped their long-awaited B2B set And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better Major League DJz brought their Amapiano vibes giving the night an even more global flavor Honey Dijon and Erykah Badu absolutely stole the show feeling like I had just witnessed something legendary and Justin Vernon is out on the promo trail He’s a guest on the new episode of the New York Times Popcast going in-depth on the album and the emotional experience behind it It’s a sound NYT critic Jon Caramanica described as “sensual.” Vernon concurred “We don’t got much time to live let’s be sexy.” The change in approach had to do with Vernon letting go of depression and what he calls “sickness” that he felt was necessary to maintain the Bon Iver persona Describing the expansion of the band’s sound to arena scale “It really was like I was hiding in there because I wasn’t well.” He said at one point he had an epiphany that he couldn’t keep operating the way he was: “You get enough adrenaline up on the stage when you’re that tired for so many years it just eats away at you.” Vernon spoke about Leslie Feist teaching him to deal with his anxiety about things like going out in the crowd at Coachella: “She’s like and they’ll treat you like one.” He also talked about going to LA more often to walk around and feel anonymous a process that has led to making “a new friend for the first time in 15 years that I didn’t meet backstage at one of my shows or in the studio.” SABLE, fABLE begins with last year’s SABLE, EP which marks what Vernon calls a final dose of the old Bon Iver: “It was almost like a cartoon of sad Bon Iver music and they were kind of like these last moments of the last gasping breath of my former self that really did feel bad for himself.” Vernon also discussed the appearances by Dijon and Mk.gee on the new album Dijon previously opened for Bon Iver when Mk.gee was touring as his guitarist an experience that was eye-opening for Vernon: That was the first time where I was actually I always enjoyed the people we went on tour with this is fresh.” What they were doing It really had me second-guessing — not second-guessing We’re just about over our own hill.” The most important stories and least important memes NV) – California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials on Friday apprehended Dijon Barber an incarcerated person wasn’t sure what Alabama football was projecting out of its 2025 five-star commit But Lee was always Johnson’s top cornerback the guy who was going to follow an offense’s best receiver and do what he loves “I get to shut down one side of the field,” Lee said The best part is definitely stopping their best receiver from catching the ball and stopping their main source of offense.”  Since committing to the Crimson Tide on June 28 that’s been Alabama’s pitch to Lee as well: to be the defense’s long tall boundary cornerback in a position to make tackles and make plays Alabama wants the California prospect to be next in line of the great cornerbacks who have come before “The DBs that have come out of there are legendary and I want to be a part of that,” Lee said a player like Lee makes sense in a cornerback room Facing a wide receiver room filled with players of all shapes and sizes Lee can be the the player to match big X receivers “We don’t want to get Randy Mossed,” Johnson said “DJ would be a guy you would put on Randy Moss.”  But Lee couldn’t approach coverage like a normal corner Instead of inching back at the line of scrimmage like smaller cornerbacks do use more of a pure step off the snap and “use your .. But he knows how to beat them: slowing down the route and getting hands on the receiver makes it hard for opposing quarterbacks to throw in that receiver’s direction and four interceptions – including one returned for a touchdown – and three pass deflections I have to inch out because I’m so scared the guy’s going to run it by me because my feet maybe aren't as quick or … I can’t flip my hips as fast,’” Johnson said Get your hands on the (guy) and he’s done.’”  Lee’s recruitment is pretty easy to explain Holding onto offers from programs like Colorado Lee got an offer from Kalen DeBoer and Washington in February 2023 ahead of programs like Oregon And the five-star cornerback said he developed a love for how DeBoer runs his program Once DeBoer and his staff moved to Tuscaloosa, Lee said the call from the Crimson Tide came a day or two later one that came with an offer to play at Alabama “I think football is football no matter what conference you’re in,” Lee said “But the SEC is definitely a more (prestigious) conference so I was really excited to find out they were going there and I was real happy that they kept recruiting me and they wanted me even whenever they left Washington to Alabama.”  Lee said he grew up with Sanders and played with McDonald in the eighth grade Lee said he’s been on the phone with each recruit and developed a relationship with five-star quarterback Keelon Russell He said every member of the class loves the environment around Alabama football and that they love what DeBoer has done in his career “We all fired up and ready for it,” Lee said.Colin Gay covers Alabama football for The Tuscaloosa News, part of the USA TODAY Network. Reach him at cgay@gannett.com or follow him @_ColinGay on X "Why would I want to forgive him?" said the mother of one of the victims A man who had been charged with four murders in Oakland over just six weeks is expected to be free in months following a recent plea deal in Alameda County The deal left several mothers whose sons were killed during the crime spree shattered and confused Stacie Pettigrew, the lead prosecutor on the case who resigned after DA Pamela Price took office also spoke out for the first time about how the case was handled "These gang members wanted to be known as the most violent gangsters in Oakland," said Pettigrew "It would have resolved through a jury trial and a verdict had we been allowed to go forward she gave them the deal of a lifetime and he'll be out next year." was part of a "violent criminal street gang" that was responsible for a series of murders and a slew of other shootings during a "crime spree" in the summer of 2008 One of the victims was an innocent bystander a father of two who was returning a laptop charger to a friend when he was caught in a drive-by shooting in North Oakland that involved at least three guns and nearly 40 rounds of ammunition One man was killed in an ambush involving five shooters and 92 rounds one was killed in a carjacking attempt and one was a contract killing for which the killers were paid at least $10,000 The prosecution's case included ballistics and DNA evidence as well as testimony from a key witness: a fellow gang member with intimate knowledge of the crimes Twenty-six people testified during a preliminary hearing in which a judge said the key witness was credible, ultimately holding Dijon Holifield and co-defendant Delonzo Logwood to answer on the raft of charges against them along with serious gang and gun enhancements could have sent the men to prison for life without parole if they had been convicted But the trajectory of the case changed drastically when DA Pamela Price was elected Delonzo Logwood, Holifield's co-defendant, was repeatedly in the headlines last year after Price announced a controversial plea deal for him Holifield flew under the radar because his case was stalled in juvenile court at the time In recent months, Holifield returned to adult court for a plea deal that quietly saw most of his charges dropped in a settlement similar to Logwood's Holifield was convicted of one count of manslaughter with a gun enhancement He was transferred to Kern Valley State Prison outside Bakersfield earlier this month but he's expected to be released early next year because he's been in custody on the charges since 2013 It should have been more time," said Regina Thomas Holifield was originally charged with the murder-for-hire of Eric Ford during an attempted robbery and carjacking on July 31 when he was picking up snacks at a local market; the murder of 30-year-old Keenan Hall in an ambush that involved so many bullets that OPD ran out of crime scene markers for them Holifield dropped a gun that police said he had used in the murders of Thomas and Hall Mothers Regina Thomas and Linda Hall attended Holifield's sentencing hearing in September The Berkeley Scanner was the only news outlet in the courtroom Regina Thomas was there to witness the ruling but elected not to make remarks both wrote letters to be read into the record "I was nearly 2 years old when my father passed away and I didn’t fully grasp the impact of his death on our family," his daughter wrote Her little brother had been just 3 months old when Keenan was killed "Growing up without a father and not knowing him has been challenging," she wrote "I often wish he could have been there to witness my growth She couldn't attend the hearing because she was away starting college on an athletic scholarship with plans to study architectural design "As I head into college … to run track while pursuing my degree I can't help but feel the absence of a father figure at my events," she wrote I longed for that support and encouragement at the finish line of my races I often wonder how different my life would be if I had my father by my side." Linda Hall described how she'd spent 16 years trying to find justice for her son "There’s nothing anyone can say or do that will bring back my son Keenan," she wrote "I will always miss and mourn for my son whom you murdered." she urged Holifield to make amends during his time in prison and find a way to make his future matter In an interview after the sentencing hearing Linda Hall recalled how everything in the case changed after Price was elected The homicides happened in 2008 but Holifield wasn't charged until 2013 but that she and the other mothers had always felt supported by prosecutor Stacie Pettigrew and Maria Suniga the DA's office gave the mothers regular updates answering their questions and alerting them to key hearings so I was able to keep up with everything." Price called the mothers together for a meeting she was alarmed that Stacie and Maria weren't there Price told them she was "not with us anymore." It was a shock Hall said Price — who had just taken office — questioned key evidence in the case evidence the mothers had seen presented and argued in court during a lengthy preliminary hearing in 2018 "when Price came in and just shut it down." Price emphasized how the defendants had been young and should be forgiven because they hadn't meant to do it Logwood was 18 and Holifield was a few months shy of it in the summer of 2008 "But these young men had five murders," Hall said "How do you drop it to a manslaughter?" Hall continued We didn't get the full justice we should have gotten." said the years of court hearings she and her family attended felt "senseless" after the case changed direction last year "We all had been in court every day up until the new DA Regina Thomas said everything became confused after Pettigrew was gone The new DA insisted that the plea deal was the "best alternative." Communication dried up and she never understood what happened "It just started being a lot of excuses," Thomas said 'This doesn't sound right.' Somewhere along the lines Unlike the Logwood plea deal which DA Price commented on repeatedly last year she issued no public statements on Holifield's sentencing last month An inquiry about it from The Scanner went unanswered "She got so much blowback in the press for what happened with Logwood — yet she wanted the same results in a case where the defendant has an extra murder and it's more provable with DNA and ballistics," said Pettigrew Price had announced the Logwood deal in one of her first public statements last year blaming "the state of the evidence and the age of the cases" for her decision to resolve it In a recent interview, Pettigrew, who worked at the Alameda County DA's office for more than 20 years and now works for DA Brooke Jenkins in San Francisco strongly disputed the idea that the evidence against Holifield and Logwood had been weak Pettigrew recalled how arguments had started in the Logwood trial That's when the defense asked for a break in the proceedings — until Jan "They wanted to talk to her," Pettigrew said Pettigrew said the age of the case was not an issue either It could have moved faster at any point — if the defense had asked for it They waived time and sat in custody for eight years and never asked for an offer," she said In an "exclusive" interview about the case last year with a TV reporter who became her spokesman, Price said "there was nothing unusual about the plea deal" Logwood had gotten — manslaughter with a gun enhancement (The TV interview included numerous erroneous claims.) Pettigrew laughed out loud when asked if the plea deals had been typical "You have individuals charged with multiple murders on separate days These were planned and premeditated," she said they made the decision to take these high-powered assault weapons and unleash them on the citizens of Oakland It's absurd that this is a normal plea agreement." Price at times blamed the outcome of the case on Pettigrew saying she had made a flawed agreement with a key witness who refused to testify at trial "He was still coming in while I was on the case," Pettigrew said "And then she comes in and announces plans to let these guys who want to kill him out of custody on a deal He didn't trust the process at that point." his refusal to participate would not have been the end of it The witness had taken the stand for four days during the preliminary hearing All of that testimony could have been used at trial All the normal mechanisms to require uncooperative witnesses to testify had also been possible but the DA's office under Price had just let it go Pettigrew said the deals were "devastating," particularly "when you look at the sheer destruction that these two killers left and the deal they got compared to what they were facing" if convicted — life in prison without parole "Every single one of those victims was Black and didn't deserve to die," Pettigrew said In one of Price's public statements about the case last year she included it among cases filed by the prior DA that had left families "'in limbo' for decades" waiting on resolution The mothers in the Holifield-Logwood case disputed that characterization They said they had been committed to seeing the case through trial and had complete faith in prosecutor Stacie Pettigrew to fight for them recalled how Pettigrew had been "magnificent" in court during the six-week preliminary hearing "She knew that case backwards and forwards "That's why we went to court every day — because I knew she was gonna bring justice." had been a "rock" for the mothers over the years Maria was that bond that we had," Ford said The new DA and victim advocate had been a letdown "When this other person took over for Maria there was no empathy whatsoever," Ford said Ford said she did not attend Holifield's sentencing hearing because she had been so disappointed in how Price handled the Logwood case last year "I refused to go back to Oakland after that Ford said her son Eric had just become a father in March 2008 He turned 22 in April of that year and had been applying for training programs when he was killed in July "I saw the letters that came after he passed away," she said He had gotten his high school diploma and wanted to make a good life for his new baby He had two dogs that he adored and was very close to his older brother who had been born two years earlier "They celebrated their birthdays together every year until they were teenagers," she said Thea still cooks his favorite meal: meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy Eric grew up playing basketball in Oakland's recreation league Thea and her husband went to his games to cheer for him every weekend He stopped playing ball after a serious injury — but then he "found girls," which became a new passion The couple raised their sons in a close-knit neighborhood in Oakland near Fruitvale Avenue There were block parties with face painting and potluck barbecues Eric always loved being silly and making people laugh everybody would just be so happy that he showed up," she said She remembered Eric in the hospital when his son was born He was such a presence that all the nurses got to know him And when Thea's mother was sick at Highland Eric would go to keep her company and keep her spirits up Eric dropped everything to take care of it "Nobody's gonna mistreat my grandmama," he had told her Thea remembered her son as relentlessly positive "You couldn't say anything mean about anybody Thea and her husband bought a large house in Contra Costa County where Eric his girlfriend and the baby were also going to live But then Eric was killed and Thea's husband died from complications after a minor surgery But I always think that — I still had a beautiful life," she said You can't do anything but keep on living." "I have albums and albums of pictures and I can't look at any of them James Thomas and Keenan Hall were killed in Oakland just hours apart The baby hadn't been born when he was killed: He never got to meet her James was about to graduate high school when he was killed James would often take the toddler to the park to give their mom a break he had your back in anything and everything," Regina said James loved his nieces and the PlayStation He also loved sports and was part of a neighborhood dance group that would compete He loved to build things and once got second place in a contest where he built a car Regina said she didn't have any pictures of James because she'd kept the family album in a storage unit she had lost Her life had been somewhat tumultuous over the years But she had done everything possible for her son Her mother also helped raise him to give his life more stability "I would give him my last pennies if I had to roll them," she said had come to her house six years after James was killed to let her know they had found the man who did it It had been so long that she initially thought they were telling her something had happened to her grandson "It was like a shock and then relief," she said She remembered the summer of 2008 as a particularly violent time in Oakland in part because the shooters had fired nearly 100 rounds that night The sons of six of her friends were also killed that summer Regina would go to his grave on his birthday each year she'll often pick up an Oreo cake and fry chicken wings "I think about him or I listen to a song he liked Regina Thomas said she hadn't gone to earlier court hearings The sentencing hearing was the first time she ever saw Dijon Holifield She said it didn't make sense to her that he would now be out of prison in a matter of months She said it seemed like the sentence wasn't enough that Holifield should have been convicted of murder and should have gotten life but I got a little justice out of it," she said "I'd rather take a little bit than nothing." Keenan Hall had just turned 30 when he was killed while dropping off a laptop charger he had borrowed from a friend near 45th and Market streets in North Oakland He had a 2-year-old girl and a 3-month-old baby boy at the time That was a really exciting thing for him to see his children born," said Keenan's mother He was just starting a family," she continued also remembered how Keenan was always giving her the baby after his son was born "He would just kind of put him on my shoulder I would tease him about it: 'Why you keep putting your baby on me?'" Keenan was always "the one that kept you laughing" and "a pretty good jokester too." He was a musician and he loved to make beats Even as he matured and became increasingly independent he was the kind who would call me and we'd talk until he pulled up in his driveway Hall said she had done everything she could to teach her grandson about his father Hall said she was still struggling to make sense of how the case changed so much under Pamela Price She had listened carefully to the evidence at the preliminary hearing and felt that what Price told the mothers at that first meeting just didn't add up "It's just like she has no sympathy for people like myself and other family members." it was just all for nothing," said Thea Ford That's where the justice system has gone to: You can just commit crimes now and nobody's gonna get punished for it The new track is taken from Honey Dijon’s newly-released entry in the DJ-Kicks series The new track appears exclusively on the new edition of !K7’s DJ-Kicks mix series, which Honey Dijon has curated. We measured him at over 6-foot-3, 187 pounds at the On3 Elite Series a month ago. I think at that size, he has solid length for the position with 32-inch arms. He’s a guy who has played a lot of very competitive, high-level football at Mission Viejo. Faced a lot of top teams and Power 4-level receivers. …He has shown high-level feet at that size. Instinctive in coverage, and good at reading receivers and understanding route concepts. Generally finds himself in a good position to make plays on the ball. Had two interceptions as a junior, and we saw him get his hands on a lot of passes in coverage. and Grace Jones and Tony Pike,” she says.“So I knew about it in a cultural sense but I didn't know much about it in the DJ world I missed a lot of the golden era of Ibiza clubbing like Pacha and the Space Terrace and DC-10 It was around 2015 that she first made the trip professionally, after an invite from Seth Troxler to play one of his birthday parties and since then she has fallen ever deeper in love with the island I have a lot of different types of relationships with the island and they have grown as my career has grown and I’ve been invited more to play I have my favourite health food spot on the island it reminds me a lot of Berlin in a lot of ways but you can also do a lot of healing stuff as well I love that you can get as naughty as you want to be and you can also recover from all that naughtiness I love this sort of indoor-outdoor nature because I’m very much into wellness so I know that Ibiza is positioned on this really spiritual point on the planet and there’s a lot of healing work and spiritual work that goes on there.” Honey represents the communities from which house music first emerged She is also aware that those communities remain underrepresented in much of the scene today and despite something of a shift to redress the balance in recent years “I just think it’s a generational shift,” she explains I think social media has polarised a lot of people You have the people that consume it as entertainment and you have actual music lovers and clubbers that want to have that connection again so I think there is room for what's coming “It’s important for me to remind and put at the forefront where this shit came from because otherwise I want to keep putting a spotlight on the incredible Honey’s hopes for party utopia don’t stop there “I often talk about how dance music or house music or techno has gone from culture to entertainment and how the people that created this incredible musical culture have been left out of it Now we are having to ask to be a part of something that started on our shores I want to be in a room with drug dealers and prostitutes and trans women and queer people and non-binary people and hedge fund people That’s a gumbo that makes the party special.” Honey is certainly right when she says that Ibiza has become such a big business that much of it has been sanitised to satisfy the authorities and keep more reserved and cautious tourists happy “We love the music but we all want to have a shag and have a good night out and parade our new outfits and talk shit with our friends we get dressed up to get laid or to express ourselves.” there are plenty of things Honey always needs when she’s in Ibiza because sometimes I want to eat something after the club and I'd rather have a protein bar instead of eating food because I don't want to get fat along the way.” She also shouts out Passion Cafe who offer a sanctuary of wellness smoothies and vegan food and “are like family to me now And I always travel with a little mini Diptyque candle for my hotel room because it reminds me a little bit of home.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Honey Dijon (@honeydijon) As well as the blend of folks on the dancefloor in the early days Honey remembers that people had different expectations back then She always loved to head to the club and hear her favourite DJ play extended sets week in Part of the thrill was “waiting for that one song that I didn’t like two weeks ago but fell in love with the week after” Playing at the relatively intimate Chinois last year reminded her of that “I really fell in love with the room,” she says comparing and contrasting it with set-ups of many other parties around the world which are often epic festivals How can even someone know who you are or what you're about when you have 90 minutes to play?” she is keen this summer to present music in the way that she experienced it I think that’s why we’ve gotten so far away from having anthems and people breaking music because we don’t have things where something can organically grow and connect with people and that is why the line-up is as diverse as it is — because I want the music to be the star of the show and not the personality of the DJ playing.” The final touch of quality that will set Honey’s summer at Chinois apart is the gear She will be playing off her own custom mixer for the first time “It’s all about the fucking sound,” she says “If there is anything I can learn from Larry Levan I want people to feel like they stepped into another world We’re so used to people listening to music on Airpods I can go anywhere from a deep house track to a techno track to an Italo-disco track You play differently at two than you will at six.” Though first and foremost a DJ, Honey is also a celebrated producer. In 2022, she picked up a GRAMMY Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album for her collaboration with Beyoncé on ‘RENAISSANCE’ and has put two superb albums out on Classic Music Company as well as having worked with Madonna and remixed Lady Gaga She has a new single on the way and a new remix of Dua Lipa which she says means “my gay card is great for the rest of my life so it’s an honour to remix these iconic people.” Next to that, she is working on another iteration of the live orchestra show she did at London’s South Bank Centre, continues to model, and is scoring a Broadway musical. Later in the year she will drop her entry into the hallowed ‘DJ-Kicks’ mix series It was a “fun” opportunity to go “really deep into music that inspired me” and will come ahead of her third full-length record she is also soon to start work on the next collection for her Honey Fucking Dijon label Honey’s whole career is one large bit of performance art and it is that which inspires her clothing label “I love the intersection of people getting dressed up to go out I learned fashion from Black kids dressing up and going to the club Clothing was a communication tool to find your tribe was always about inspiration as opposed to aspiration no one was using the subcultural signifiers and so I decided to use those things as a communication tool through clothing.” It’s been a success from the off that has allowed Honey to take inspiration from the likes of neo-expressionist Jean-Michel Basquiat and work with people who documented the ballroom culture back in the nineties Honey gets hyped about working on the new collection but won’t reveal who it is with beyond saying it's “the father of us all” as far as art is concerned it's just about spotlighting the incredibly talented queer people and culture that may have been overlooked,” she explains “Every time I approached a legendary artist like Basquiat or Haring I always approached it from their musical side Jean-Michel used to listen to jazz when he was painting Keith Haring created the mural at the Sound Factory I just wanted to approach their work in a way that wasn’t something that you could just go get at Uniqlo.” She manages time efficiently but also avoids processed food and sugar She trains hard and has “a Pilates instructor a rower.” All this gives her clarity when she works When I was poor and struggling and living in a 30 square meter flat in New York with roaches and rats and clanging pipes in a pre-war building I always said to myself that I would rather be tired from work than tired looking for work.” If there was an Olympic Games for creatives Honey Dijon would be odds on for the gold medal Honey Dijon will bring her COZY nights to Chinois from September Want more?
