Additionally, the presentation will highlight Purple-Heart recipient Pvt. Odell Myers, who officials said is buried at Epinal, and Sgt. Tom Hall, who earned the Medal of Honor in World War I and gave his life a few hours north in Montbrehain, France.
The band will travel to Switzerland before the performance since the Epinal is near France’s border.

but didn't miss a step as they sealed the national competition in Epinal
The four-time world champions were in a league of their own
scoring 137.31 points in the free dance - to add to their earlier tally of 93.79 points in the rhythm dance on Friday 1 October - for an overall score of 231.10 points
Papadakis and Cizeron finished over 40 points clear of their nearest rivals
but their overriding emotion was gratitude to be competing again after such a long absence

The pair hold the world record for the highest scores in rhythm dance (90.03)
and the combined total (226.61) which they set at the 2019 NHK Trophy
Papadakis and Cizeron proved that they have lost none of their competitiveness in their time away from competition
and could be in for another record-breaking season after scoring higher than their current world records in Epinal this weekend
The two-time Grand Prix Final winners debuted their new rhythm dance programme

In 19th-century France, a style of bright, illustrative prints known as Images d’Épinal emerged as a way to portray subjects in sharp colors
The name was derived from the works’ first publisher
who hailed from the municipality of Épinal
And while the designs proved popular in children’s items like card games and books
their use as propaganda glorifying Napoleon I solidified the prints’ rise to fame
“image d’Épinal” has become a proverbial expression in French to refer to a naïve depiction of something
Roeselare, Belgium-based artist Kristof Santy nods to the legacy of the narrative tableaux in his striking paintings
portraying everyday scenes in vibrant colors
idealized compositions are simultaneously specific and universal; each painting brims with personal or idiosyncratic details that at the same time represent observations we all experience
from getting ready in the bathroom to going to the office to passing vehicles on the road
which means “livestock transport,” depicts a parked yellow truck with its driver-side curtain pulled shut and cartoonish animals peering out from the trailer
Epinal, Santy’s solo exhibition at Christine König Galerie, explores a variety of ubiquitous subjects like clothing zippers or arrays of food (previously) while also tapping into an autobiographical experience
The artist’s series Cours De Dessin, which translates to “drawing lesson,” distills potted plants or everyday items

The Magazine of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Field
a major annual fantasy festival held in Epinal
has been embroiled in controversy recently
Founder and artistic director Stéphanie Nicot
who has worked on Imaginales since its founding 20 years ago
Nicot’s firing set off a wave of resignations and withdrawals from the festival
and Robin Hobb have all posted in support of Nicot
and withdrawn their support for the festival
Hobb wrote on Twitter: “I am very distressed to learn that Stephanie Nicot… has been set aside
The mayor of Epinal believes that the festival cannot ‘evolve’ without changes at the top
am something that Imaginales can get rid of.” Kushner replied
[Delia Sherman] & I were at [Imaginales] this past May: our 4th visit
with its program directed by Stephanie Nicot
Lionel Davoust resigned after being part of the Imaginales team “since the very beginning,” serving as an interpreter for many authors
co-editor of three of the festival’s official anthologies
who was a coordinator for multiple categories of the Prix Imaginales Awards (presented at the event)
and past Imaginales award winner Charlotte Bousquet deplored the “lies and spinelessness” of the organizers and said she would not return to the festival
festival leadership reportedly questioned the involvement of authors Betty Piccioli and Silène Edgar
who were vocal in criticizing Stéphane Marsan
co-founder of major French SF imprint Bragelonne
who was accused of inappropriate behavior and sexual harassment by more than 20 people
Officials also said roundtables on equality between men and women were “controversial.” The organizers ran a program called “Radicality of Islam or radical Islam,” which many involved with the festival considered Islamophobic
and other non-cis-het members of the French SF community have complained about having their roles at the festivalreduced
Stéphane Wieser, Director of Culture for the city of Épinal, said Nicot was let go because the 2022 festival ended with considerable tensions among the organizers. Wieser said the festival needs to “evolve,” and will grow to encompass video games, movies, and other media as well as books. An interview with Wieser can be read (in French) here
Nicot’s discussed her perspective on the situation in an interview at ActuSF (in French) here
Nicot ascribes the changes to a reactionary ideological shift in the leadership of Epinal
Nicot says that though this crisis has only recently erupted publicly
problems have been simmering since the start of the “Marsan affair.” When Nicot posted in support of the victims
an elected official from Epinal called to complain
Nicot says the city censored some of her programming items
and imposed moderators and program title changes without consultation
The city also reacted negatively to Nicot’s requests for better compensation
the city is offering a higher salary than Nicot was ever paid

Juliette Labous second and Cedrine Kerbao third
as Ferrand-Prévot returns to take fifth
The 31-year-old Breton cyclist who took her first blue
white and red jersey for road racing on home soil in August last year claimed her fifth title against the clock in Epinal in the East of France after dominating the event consecutively from 2015 to 2018.
She outclassed defending champion Juliette Labous (Team DSM)
by almost thirty seconds on the 26.3km course while Cédrine Kerbaol (Team Arkéa)
rounded out the podium with a deficit of 1:17
The latter was the first starter and occupied the hot seat for most of the event
“Today’s race reminded me of two years ago when I lost my title because of a mechanical," Cordon-Ragot said
I usually don’t drink during a time trial but I forced myself to do so this time
It was crucial to handle the hard finale well
When I saw at a check point that I was only seven seconds ahead of Cédrine [Kerbaol]
I wondered if she had done something great or if I was slow
Maybe I hurt myself more than the others did.”
Cordon-Ragot was coached on this occasion by B&B Hotels-KTM’s sport director and former Tour de France stage winner Samuel Dumoulin
“I’m very happy to get the jersey back," she added
“The French championship is always one of my biggest goals of the season
This year I’ve had to refocus after I was left out of the Olympic Games but I don’t see today’s victory as a revenge
I didn’t want to remain disappointed
It wanted to show that I still have my place at the high level.”
The race was also the first outing on the road for multiple world champion Pauline Ferrand-Prévot (Absolute-Absalon-BMC) after 719 days
she returned with satisfaction although she’s currently busy gearing up for the mountain biking at Tokyo’s Olympics
She had won three time trial titles from 2012 to 2014
between the reigns of Longo and Cordon-Ragot
who was also the runner up on those three occasions
whatever the result is." Ferrand-Prévot told Directvelo at the finish
“I think I made one of my best time trials for a long time
I came to continue my preparation to the Olympics
It was a great pleasure to have so many spectators cheering for me
Racing in the heat was a good test for Tokyo as well
We expect it to be hot and humid there.”
the former Olympic and world champion Julien Absalon
Ferrand-Prévot will also line up in the road race on Saturday morning
Three doctors at a hospital in northeastern France have been convicted of manslaughter and serious injury because of radiation overdoses between 2001 and 2006 that affected 450 prostate cancer patients
The incidents led to the deaths of at least 12 patients and resulted in serious injury to many others
The overdoses at Jean Monnet Hospital in Epinal
the judge in the case summed up last week in Paris after a four-month hearing
One of the mistakes concerned incorrect technical calibration in radiation therapy machines during installation in 2004
namely not factoring into the final calculation the radiation dose that patients received during radiological exams prior to treatment in procedures that took place between 2001 and 2006
The convictions have yet again highlighted the importance of radiation dose awareness
not only for patients but also for healthcare providers
was sentenced to a fixed prison term of 18 months
cancer physicians Dr. Jean-Francois Sztermer and Dr
and lifelong bans from practicing medicine
at least 24 patients received a 20% radiation overdose between May and August 2005 due to erroneous calibration of new radiation therapy machines
while failure to take into account radiation dose from previous imaging procedures led to overdoses of between 8% and 10% across 424 other patients between 2001 and 2006
the overdosing has caused serious urinary and digestive problems and sexual dysfunction among many of the affected patients
Anah admitted to negligence in the calibration of the machines and failure to correctly train technicians in using them
His suspended three-year sentence included the charges of manslaughter and destroying evidence
while the other two doctors were each given four-year suspended sentences that recognized manslaughter
According to the French Society of Oncologic Radiotherapy (Société Française de Radiothérapie Oncologique [SFRO])
two-thirds of cancer patients are treated with radiotherapy at some stage of their disease
representing 200,000 treatments in France per year
In a statement shortly ahead of the opening of the court case in September 2012
SFRO said strict measures were in place to prevent treatment errors
and these had been reinforced since 2006 through an increase in full-time radiotherapy staff to 530 in 2011
The number of posts is set to increase in 2013 and 2014
radiotherapy quality assurance staff were established in 140 centers across France in 2011 and 2012 to improve the dissemination of radiotherapy safety awareness and practice through ensuring the application of QA measures
the creation of an early signaling mechanism to l'Autorité de Sûreté Nucléaire (French Nuclear Security Authority) and the French medical regulatory agency
Agence Française de Sécurité Sanitaire des Produits de Santé (French Agency for the Safety of Health Products [AFSSAPS])
for unexpected adverse events both within a service and at a national level mirrored the amplification of a "culture of safety" that already existed in many radiotherapy centers before 2006
and this culture would continue to strengthen through ongoing professional training for all radiotherapy staff
A pair of World War II memorials in France inscribed with the names of missing American troops had a bronze marker added to them this week
the American Battle Monuments Commission placed a rosette next to the name of Army Cpl
Bartlett on the Wall of the Missing at Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer
another marker was inserted near the name of Pfc
Flores on a similar wall at the Epinal American Cemetery in Dinozé
They’re the latest in a recent uptick in positive identifications by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency of American military personnel who fought in Europe decades ago
The two soldiers were accounted for separately earlier this year and will be repatriated to their families for private burials in early August
the commission said in separate statements Wednesday
He was assigned to the 744th Tank Battalion and was part of the crew of an M5A1 Stuart light tank
A German rocket hit his tank near Saint-Germain-d’Elle
but Bartlett and another soldier were never heard from again
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced July 18 that Bartlett’s remains had finally been identified
the agency announced that Flores had been accounted for as well
and assigned to the 45th Infantry Division
during a battle with German forces near Reipertswiller
The American Battle Monuments Commission operates and maintains 26 cemeteries and 31 federal memorials throughout the world
More than 200,000 Americans buried and memorialized at the sites
On its monuments to service members missing in action
the commission places bronze rosettes next to the names of those who are later accounted for
The rosettes display a laurel wreath and the eight points of a compass
reaching out in all directions to recover their remains from the farthest corners of the earth,” according to the commission’s official description
Bartlett’s rosette is the 29th on the Wall of the Missing at Normandy
which includes the names of more than 1,550 service members
Flores’ rosette is the 33rd on the Epinal American Cemetery’s wall
They’re among a handful of recently added rosettes
one was placed next to the name of Army Pvt
He was assigned to the 149th Engineer Combat Battalion in the European theater
he was on a landing craft that struck an underwater mine en route to Normandy’s Omaha Beach on D-Day
and his remains were eventually uncovered during an examination of the wreckage
that a rosette had been added next to the name of Army Pfc
on the Wall of the Missing at Florence American Cemetery in Tavarnuzze
was in a tank that took enemy fire near the Cinquale Canal in northwestern Italy in early 1945
He was assigned to the 92nd Infantry Division and was 30 when he died
a relative of the Pittsburgh native helped place a rosette next to his name on the Wall of the Missing
Officials attribute the spike in identifications to technological advances and improvements in DNA analysis
The rosette for Baskind was the fifth added to the Normandy American Cemetery’s wall in as many months
DNA,” Desjardins said on the sidelines of the ceremony
“We hope in the future that we can find a lot of these men and put a rest to their story and give their families some peace.”
Lorenzo Depuidt (20) will play the 2023/2024 season at Épinal

Armirail and Brunel complete Groupama-FDJ podium sweep
But the biggest surprise came from defending champion Rémi Cavagna (Deceuninck-Quick Step) who crossed the line with the 23rd best time and a deficit of five minutes on the 45.6km course in Epinal
“It’s a huge satisfaction,” Thomas said
“I lost my jersey by a very small margin last year
I didn’t prepare specifically as much as last year
but I came out of a very high-level Tour de Suisse where I produced long efforts
So I was confident in my condition ahead of this time trial
The whole top three is a reward to the team that invests in research and development
They put us in the best situation to perform
I’ve been here since Sunday evening to favour my recovery after the Tour de Suisse.”
Thomas led over Cavagna by only two seconds but the “TGV of Clermont-Ferrand” was later hampered by a mechanical and was forced to change bikes
his deficit at the second checkpoint (30.6km) was 1:51 and opted to save his energy for Sunday’s road race instead
He’s set to be a helper for Julian Alaphilippe along with Florian Sénéchal against the collective strength of Groupama-FDJ
despite the absence of a still injured Thibaut Pinot
not on Rémi’s,” Thomas explained
“I started strongly and I struggled at halfway but I had info about Bruno [Armirail] so I could finish it off without blowing
This result takes the pressure off before the road race but we’ve been up there for years and we hope to win again.”
It’s the fourth national title in the individual time trial for the squad directed by Marc Madiot since 1997 as Benoît Vaugrenard (2007) and Pinot (2016) preceded Thomas in the record books
They have claimed seven titles in the past nine editions of the French championship for road racing (with Nacer Bouhanni in 2012
Anthony Roux in 2018) but they never took all top three places before today
“It feels great but it was unexpected,” Madiot told Cyclingnews.
“I also enjoyed following Clément Davy who is an up-and-coming time trialist and finished sixth.”
Davy hails from the Mayenne province where the first time trial of the Tour de France will be held on stage 5
but there won’t be a Groupama-FDJ blue
and red jersey on the roads on June 30 as Thomas
who is also the reigning world champion for the omnium
will be busy preparing for the track at the Tokyo Olympics

Planche photographique des désordres du mouvement de terrain de la rue Louis Blériot à Epinal (Vosges).
an expert study by the BRGM concluded that dissolving evaporites (mainly gypsum) could be causing ground instability on the slope affected
The Vosges département authority (DDT 88) then requested a BRGM study to improve knowledge on the mechanisms causing the instability
in particular through a characterisation of the geometry of the gypsum-bearing layers and their state of dissolution and a functional characterisation of the sector's hydrogeology
the study brought improvements in knowledge on the geological and hydrogeological context of the unstable slope
in particular by means of a drilling campaign and surface geophysical investigations
The ground movement kinetics were then characterised by analysing levelling and clinometric data
Data series tracking the movements over time were also analysed in the light of the area's functional hydrogeology
Interpretation of these investigations and analyses suggests that deformation of the slope is governed by a complex mechanism involving a combination of landslip and subsidence movements
While the ground instability first appears to be of the landslip type
the mechanism governing its progress is probably linked to the dissolving of gypsum as freshwater from the canal infiltrates regularly into the slope
funnels form at the foot of the slope while on the slope itself
the dissolving process concentrates into pockets of mainly clayey material above the evaporite layers but without forming well-defined cavities
Destabilisation of the slope is also partly influenced by precipitation
which lowers the resistance and cohesiveness of the material and adds to the effect of the dissolving evaporites
Although observations suggest that the ground movement is restricted to the slope uphill from rue Louis Blériot
signs of evaporite dissolution directly beneath the street indicate that if the uphill phenomenon should persist
it may trigger subsidence-type ground movements under the street itself

The results of this study were communicated to management bodies and citizens at a public meeting
The residual risks raised by the unstable slope were characterised and a series of recommendations were made to enable the management bodies responsible to conduct additional studies for the design of appropriate remedial measures and to improve characterisation of the risks
especially for the inhabited sector uphill
The risk of subsidence along the street required high-level geological expertise
The major study conducted thanks to the BRGM was able to distinguish between the natural and human-induced causes of the problem
we are in a position to implement appropriate and enduring safety measures
we are commissioning a further study of the zone using radar interferometry

France is no stranger to brutal wars in history including one where American soldiers and German soldiers clashed in fierce battle
volunteers from both sides has come together to honor the thousands of men from Wisconsin who sacrificed their lives in the fierce battle during the World War II
Around 5,000 American servicemen found their final resting place in Epinal American Military Cemetery in the northeastern town of Dinozé found at the foothills of Vosges Mountains in France
Many of these servicemen bear names that like the thousands others may have been buried in the pages of history
have brought back the stories of the soldiers to world by adopting the gravesites of the U.S
The volunteers placed wreaths and flowers and tended the graves and the crosses to honor the men who were buried there
One godfather went beyond knowing the story of the buried soldier in the grave he adopted
He tried to contact a history professor of the University of Wisconsin in his inquiry
Professor Mary Louise Roberts gave the task of knowing the story of Robert Kellett to her studetns
all were interested to work on the project
The students researched about Kellett and found that he was a pole vaulter and hurdler at Fond du Lac High School
He was killed in hand-to-hand combat with enemy soldiers in 1944
He was only married less than a year and he was just 22
the 43 students wanted more of the same projects
Professor Roberts asked for more names from the godfather
The director of the Epinal American Military Cemetery grave adoption program sent a list of 30 other soldiers
The students discovered the stories of the soldiers in the lists
newspaper clippings and other resources as reference to their research
they shared to the godfathers tending to the graves in France
They discovered another name in the person of Sgt
7th Army liberated Epinal from Nazi occupation in September 23
The town started burying the Americans and German soldiers who died during the encounter
around 7,752 American soldiers and 6,000 Germans were said to be buried there
She was very happy when she knew that her big brother’s story was not forgotten and even retold to the future generations
She is also happy to learn that his grave is being attended to
Fink became friends with the man who adopted his big brother’s grave
She expressed her gratitude at the efforts of the godfather and those who relived his life story
Although her brother was killed 70 years ago
Fink was glad someone took the task to look after him in his grave
She said that there were only two visitors
Audrey and her husband in 1974 and her niece two years ago

Malta-based B2B supplier assists North Macedonian casino operator ahead of Q1 2021 online launch
Gaming Innovation Group (GiG) has inked an agreement with North Macedonian casino operator K.A.K DOO Skopje (KAK) to power its forthcoming online launch
The scope of the initial agreement includes the provision of GiG’s online platform
front-end development and managed media services
The group is targeting digital launch in Q1 2021
The final agreement is expected to be signed in August 2020 on a combined fixed fee and revenue share basis
The partnership is expected to make a positive contribution to GiG’s revenues from 2021 onwards
operates two casinos offering both slots and table games
LeGrand Casino Skopje and LeGrand Casino Bitola
along with four hotels (Hotel Epinal in Bitola and hotels Sport
Bistra and Lodge in Mavrovo) and the Mavrovo Ski Resort
K.A.K DOO Skopje CEO Ognjan Cigovski welcomed the agreement
citing GiG’s positive history of working with land-based casino operators to expand their operations
“We are pleased to have them supporting our digital transformation and online player acquisition strategy as we expand into the newly regulating online market,” said Cigovski
“We believe that by joining our efforts we can translate the feel and look of our LeGrand casinos into an online offering that both caters for our current players as well as attracts new ones
“We are looking forward to a long lasting and mutually beneficial partnership,” he concluded
The deal follows the North Macedonian government’s decision to allow land-based casino operators to apply for online licences on the condition that online platforms directly reflect the scope of offline operations
GiG CEO Richard Brown said the supplier was “looking at a lot of growth potential in emerging markets in countries that are starting to transition online”
GiG already has a significant footprint in the Balkans
The firm owns a 75% stake in Croatian gaming company Top Games
which is currently readying its own digital launch
and now they can become the first side from a French overseas territory to reach the last 16 of the national knockout competition if they can beat Epinal on Saturday
from the Vosges mountains in eastern France
JS Saint-Pierroise -- nicknamed 'The Storks' -- ply their trade in the equivalent of the sixth division
They have already matched the achievement of Geldar Kourou from French Guiana
who were the first overseas outfit to make it as far as the last 32
in the Sega genre traditional on the island
competition rules mean 'The Storks' cannot play games at home at this stage of the French Cup
forcing them to come back to mainland France to prepare for this weekend's match
set to be played in temperatures around 25 degrees centigrade lower than on Reunion
in the south of the volcanic island situated off the east coast of Madagascar
where France lost to China in a friendly before the 2010 World Cup
JS Saint-Pierroise see their French Cup run as a chance to grow outside the confines of the local league
"We are the only club from Reunion never to have been relegated," points out their coach
"We have won everything here," adds captain Jean-Michel Fontaine
and the club have even dreamt of competing in African continental competitions
it is imperative that we open up to the outside world
nationally but also in Africa," adds Dafreville
"African competitions are really important
Unfortunately you need the means and we don't have them."
An annual subsidy of 325,000 euros ($363,000) makes up 70 percent of the budget of a club who attract average crowds of around 700
A draw against a Ligue 1 club would therefore have been a dream come true
Dafreville insists there are no stars in his team
although he has three members of the Madagascar squad that reached the quarter-finals of last year's Africa Cup of Nations
Atletico Madrid and Dundee United striker Florent Sinama-Pongolle
