or Iran heirloom pumpkins and experience their unique appearance and superior flavor All three will forever change your perception of pumpkins Each fall I get a sinking feeling when I drive past farm stands loaded with acres of orange field pumpkins but their bland flavor has given pumpkins a bad rap why are we encouraging a mono-culture devoted to the sort of pumpkins that are best sold in cans There are lots of other wonderful culinary pumpkins with high decorative value: It’s a shame we don’t see more of them in our markets Here is a trilogy of heirloom varieties I highly recommend for gardeners with room for long trailing vines All three varieties belong to the species Cucurbita maxima which means two things: the fruits and vines are large they’ll cross and you won’t want to save their seed these three are definite winners and even if I don’t always grow them myself I make an annual beeline to the farmers who do The history of this pumpkin is well-documented thanks to the research of professor Herwig Teffner of the University of Graz in Austria this pumpkin evolved around Venice in the latter part of the 1600s It takes its name from the fishing village of Chioggia which became a major source of produce for Venetians once the salt marshes nearby were drained and cultivated My first encounter with this pumpkin occurred one brisk foggy fall morning at the produce market in Venice where barges piled high with them were moored along the Grand Canal The farmers were slicing and grilling them right there by the water No matter where you went in Venice that day you could smell those pumpkins grilling with olive oil and rosemary ‘Marina di Chioggia’ is turban-shaped with a unique blue-green skin that’s divided into ridges Like ‘Galeux d’Eysines,’ it’s covered with sugar warts The average weight of the fruit is about 10 pounds All you need to do is cut it into slices like you would an apple Brush it with olive oil; cook it on a grill until hot all the way through; then scatter sea salt and chopped rosemary over each slice Eat it with your fingers: that’s the way the Venetians do it ‘Iran’ is the newest kid on the block the most common being ‘Iran.’ This is one of the most beautiful of the large Everyone who sees it comments that it looks painted but so far its documented history has not surfaced its uses are many and well-known if you talk to Iranians familiar with traditional cookery It will keep for as long as eight months or even a year if you harvest it before the first frost and store it in a cool very dense and somewhat brittle in pumpkins that have been stored a long time This has its advantages because it’s mealy when cooked and especially the stews for which Iranian cookery is famous It tastes great pickled with sugar and garlic and the seeds are highly valued as a toasted snack Spread them out on a cookie sheet with a dash of sea salt and bake at 350 degrees for five to eight minutes You’ll know when they’re done by the toasty aroma Because the flavor of the flesh hints of peanuts and basil both figure prominently in Iranian recipes using this pumpkin this French heirloom variety is quite an eye-popper and the hard skin of the mature fruit is salmon-pink and covered with warts resembling peanut shells These bumps are sometimes called “sugar warts,” because they’re caused by a buildup of sugars under the skin the place in France where it originated in the 19th century In France the ‘Galeux d’Eysines’ is mostly used for soups sauces and preserves such as pumpkin butter because the texture of the cooked fruit is very smooth A pumpkin’s flavor is most concentrated just under its skin and in the seed mass; boil the flesh (minus the skin) and the seed mass (minus the seeds) when making a soup stock and you’ll really taste the difference The orange flesh is fragrant and quite sweet with a hint of sweet potato and apple Each pumpkin weighs about 10 to 15 pounds and if picked before frost then move them outside after the threat of frost has passed This precaution will help you avoid the common problem of mice squirrels or moles eating the seeds when directly planted in hills The plastic will keep weeds at bay and discourage squash beetles which tend to attack the base of the stems Keep the plants well-watered and well-fertilized and make sure they have enough room in the garden or lawn to sprawl about All three varieties tend to produce fruits toward the end of the vines might end up as far away as 16 to 20 feet from the hill All three varieties ripen in about 100 days They’re ready to pick as soon as the stems are dry and they sound hollow when tapped If you want to save true seeds for replanting, grow only one pumpkin species at a time so they don’t cross Let the pumpkins ripen on the vine as long as possible Select the pumpkins with the best characteristics and eat or discard any that are deformed or strangely colored (you don’t want to perpetuate those qualities) After you pick the pumpkins selected for seed This will allow the seeds to draw more energy from the pumpkin wash thoroughly in a strainer and let them dry on a screen and put it in the refrigerator or freeze it ‘Galeux d’Eysines,’ ‘Marina di Chioggia’ and ‘Iran’: Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds Mansfield ‘Galeux d’Eysines,’ and ‘Marina di Chioggia’: Seed Savers Exchange Empanadas Dulces de Calabaza Recipe d'Eysines adopte un nouveau plan de circulation pour son bourg marquant un tournant en matière de mobilité douce Le cœur historique de la commune passe désormais en zone de rencontre où la vitesse maximale est réduite à 20 km/h Cette initiative vise à apaiser la circulation et offrir un environnement plus sûr et agréable pour les piétons et cyclistes Renouer avec l'esprit village que la Ville entend continuer à sauvegarder Les travaux ont été réalisés pendant les vacances scolaires d’hiver Le projet modifie en profondeur l'agencement des rues : cinq d'entre elles deviennent à sens unique tandis qu'une large zone de rencontre s'étend sur une grande partie du centre les piétons ont la priorité (à l'exception du tramway) tandis que les véhicules motorisés sont limités à 20 km/h La zone de rencontre permet une cohabitation entre tou·te·s les usager·e·s Un double-sens cyclable est également instauré dans les rues à sens unique fruit d’une réflexion partagée répond à la nécessité construit dans les années 1950-1970 Nous avons hérité d'un quartier historique intact qu'il fallait préserver tout en apportant sécurité et apaisement. » Le nouveau plan sera testé jusqu’aux vacances d'été et un bilan sera effectué en juin-juillet pour évaluer son efficacité lived and served in France while her husband Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles presided over the France Bordeaux Mission from 1989-1992 As my husband and I were happily thinking and talking about the soon-to-be dedication of the Paris France Temple we took from our bookshelf a binder now almost 25 years old It was a gift given to us by the Saints of our little Eysines Branch before we left France in 1992 to return to our home in Florida read their testimonies again and thought of the faithful men and women from our branch in southwestern France who lived their lives with the hope and anticipation that perhaps one day there would be a temple in France Let us tell you about a few of the people we came to know and love: She was a pillar of strength in the Church When our youngest child was going to be baptized We didn’t realize that being present at the early morning baptism at the church would require her arising at 5 a.m. taking two buses and then a good walk to arrive at the church Sister David was there (never mentioning the inconvenience) with her beautiful smile and warm embrace for one of her Primary boys She lived a life of unwavering faith and devotion One of our dear branch presidents was President Jean Caussé he and wonderful Mari-Blanche were undeviating in their love of the gospel Their testimonies forged strength in their children (including young Gérald who now serves as the Presiding Bishop of the Church) and their grandchildren So many lives have been blessed by the testimonies of Jean and Mari-Blanche Brother and Sister Dupuy were faithful pillars in the branch in Eysines Their influence has extended through generations with their daughter and her beautiful family Laurence was the Young Women president when we were in the Eysines Branch and lovingly blessed the lives of the young women through her beautiful example Alain would serve as bishop of the Eysines Ward for seven years Brother and Sister Farel were present in the early 1970s when a mission president reportedly said that missionaries would no longer play the piano in the meetings and that the members needed to learn to play the piano they immediately enrolled their daughter Annie in piano lessons but Annie Farel learned how to play the piano Brother and Sister Farel were now grandparents Annie’s generation developed talents that helped strengthen the Church in France and now she was a mother faithfully teaching the gospel to her children Theo and Suzanne Plante joined the Church as adults They embraced the gospel with a full measure of heart and soul The Plantes have spent their lives serving with a devotion that reflects their complete love for the Lord There are now three generations of the Plante family who rejoice together in the dedication of the temple in Paris We remember a wonderful district Relief Society president who arrived in the city of Bayonne one Sunday We had driven the two hours in the car with our family We were embarrassed when we realized that she had arisen before dawn and ridden her bike in the dark to the train station She had taken the train to the city and then made her way to the house where the meetings were to be held I still remember the lesson she taught that day in Relief Society she returned with us to Bordeaux in our car I have never forgotten my feelings that day as we dropped her off at the train station where she climbed on her bike to ride the distance home Hers was a measure of devotion that touched me very deeply I remember sitting in a Sunday School class shortly after we arrived in France The teacher handed out about ten little cards for class members to read at the appointed time during the lesson I was quite astounded that each card was handwritten Then I realized that this sister didn’t have access to a copier or a computer Thinking that we would learn more by participating she had painstakingly handwritten lengthy quotations from the lesson manual We remember a devoted father and mother with a 16-year-old son who didn’t want to attend seminary The father was the branch president and had been given permission to be the early morning seminary teacher for his son The 16-year-old son was able to keep his feet in the gospel was married in the temple and is teaching his children the gospel The tradition of religion is prominent in almost every village and town in France as beautiful cathedrals are often the centerpieces of their communities We watched as devoted Latter-day Saints often passed these magnificent structures on their way to worship God in simple chapels and rented houses or buildings the famous wines of France are undiscovered to faithful Latter-day Saints and — though sometimes not numbered among society’s elite — these extraordinary men and women are surely numbered among God’s elect The faithful Saints from our Eysines Branch and others are a small sampling of the members of the Church in France who have helped build generation after generation of strength and hope and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and His gospel attended church in a large rented hall and sang The visions and blessings of old are returning and angels are coming to visit the earth” (Hymns Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles stood and announced the creation of the Bordeaux France Stake of Zion there was an audible clap of thunder such as we had never heard in our years in France It seemed to us that heaven had given an exclamation point to the furtherance of the Lord’s kingdom in France that the Paris France Temple will be dedicated How we rejoice with the Saints of France whose privilege it is to have lived long enough to see this blessed day Untold numbers of faithful men and women who gave their lives for the gospel did not live to see the hallowed day when the House of the Lord will be dedicated their deeds and their faith join together with Latter-day Saints today becoming the figurative mortar and stone of this Paris France Temple We will think of them — all of the true Saints who called France home and who lived and longed for this holy day we will see their faces on the glorious day of dedication and imagine their happiness as heaven and earth join in singing: “We’ll sing and we’ll shout with the armies of heaven A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of planning a mass killing in Bordeaux - was arrested in Eysines (around 9 km from the centre of Bordeaux) after a tip-off via the government platform Pharos on May 17 Pharos is a government website created to enable people to report illicit content and behaviour online The suspect had written a post “that could appear apologist and making reference to a mass murder in California The suspect is said to have a “fascination” with the Isla Vista attack in the US which killed seven people and injured 14 others Initial investigations have found that the man has no previous criminal convictions He is thought to be associated with the ‘incel movement’.  ‘Incel’ is a portmanteau term for ‘involuntary celibate’ and it is used to describe an online community of men - sometimes called a ‘subculture’ - who blame women feminism and society for their inability to find the sexual or romantic partners they believe they deserve.  The movement has become associated with radicalism and violent extremism, after several attackers around the world have been identified as part of the group. Just today, a Scottish minister has warned that incel violence could be “as serious as Islamist terrorism” The perpetrator of the Isla Vista attack was also associated with the incel movement and wrote a 137-page “manifesto” prior to the killings He planned to kill women because he could not get a girlfriend The man in Bordeaux has admitted to having wanted to plan his own murders after having suffered what he felt was an insult Searches of his home revealed a revolver and several mobile phones Mr Porterie said that there was no evidence that the suspect had planned to carry out the act during the Olympic torch relay in Paris This contradicts a X (Twitter) post by Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin Read also: Englishman charged with murder in France but never extradited dies Read also: Neighbour murdered Briton in France after she asked to borrow tape  “People close to him have said that he is psychologically very fragile,” said the prosecutor the psychiatrist appointed has not revealed any particular disorder.” A judicial investigation is now being opened on the grounds of “criminal apologist [leanings] and criminal conspiracy” Mr Porterie has also recommended that the suspect be remanded in custody pending further investigation Police are reported to be concentrating on people likely to wish direct ill of Karen Carter who was fatally stabbed on April 29 Teaching staff may soon be able to search students’ belongings When pumpkin-spice everything starts to show up, so do actual pumpkins. Many of us are happy just to grab a big orange one (or two or three) for carving and a few cute little ones for seasonal decoration. The more intrepid among us, however, may toy with the idea of cutting them up and making pumpkin pie or tasty pumpkin cornbread from scratch — after all pumpkins are all over the place in the fall and it seems a waste to use them only for decoration the first thought that comes to mind is pie So if you're trying to think of something creative to do with a whole it's natural to think of turning it into pie filling canned pumpkin purée makes pumpkin pies a snap to put together but fresh pumpkins could offer an extra dose of flavor — not to mention serious bragging rights you may have heard it referred to as a squash and this would be correct: No clear technical difference distinguishes squashes from pumpkins although the term pumpkin is typically used for types of squash with hard rinds Originally from Cambodia and introduced to Japan Kabocha squashes have a typical pumpkin shape (round but boast dark green skin with pale stripes or mashed as a side." Because Kabocha is dense and firm when cooked it lends itself to a range of other preparations a favorite treatment for Kabocha is to cut it into thin slices and fry it up as tempura The Marina di Chioggia pumpkin is not one you're likely to see in a jack-o'-lantern display It boasts a warty green skin more reminiscent of a reptile than a typical fruit where it was first introduced from its native South America in the 1600s Italian cooks have devised a variety of dishes to take advantage of these pumpkins these are still great ways to enjoy their "creamy "[They're] perfect for gnocchi, ravioli filling, pasta sauces, or grilled slices topped with herbs," Duford says. A traditional, and very autumnal, topping for pumpkin pastas is sage brown butter sauce which also has the benefit of being quick and easy to make — not a bad thing Red Kuri is not always easy to find in stores in the U.S you can easily obtain seeds to grow the pretty pumpkin which is shaped like a wide teardrop with thin First cultivated on Hokkaido Island in Japan (the reason for its alternate name it is now grown and eaten in locales around the world including France and New Zealand Because Red Kuri pumpkins are relatively small (cantaloupe-sized) with thin skins and tender flesh This makes them a good choice if you don't have the tools is "creamy and slightly nutty with a mild sweetness." This fearing the flavor simply won't be the same If you're among those who are torn between their love for culinary challenges and love for tradition you can honor both by seeking out a Dickinson pumpkin This varietal features large (10-pounds and over) fruit with smooth First cultivated in Kentucky in the early 19th century Dickinson pumpkins are now the main varietal used in canned pumpkin production While Libby's now uses its own proprietary variant of the Dickinson pumpkin for its beloved canned purée Mary Jane Duford recommends that you find or grow your own Dickinsons if you crave a pumpkin pie with that "classic" flavor The very name Quaker Pie pumpkin evokes homespun coziness Say it and the image of a rustic homemade pie cooling on a windowsill comes to mind — and chances are your mental image will also include a handmade quilt and a beloved elder knitting in a rocking chair or rolling out dough for another pie This heirloom varietal did indeed originate on a Quaker homestead where it was intended for cooking and eating Quaker Pie pumpkin plants yield smallish fruit with cream-colored skin and firm While they lack the vibrant orange flesh of more familiar pumpkin varieties their flavor is anything but dull — smooth and reminiscent of coconut their dense texture and lack of stringiness has made them a longtime favorite for pie filling So if you're curious to sample a taste of the past a pie made from Quaker Pie pumpkin may be just what you need Jarrahdale pumpkins are as attractive to look at as they are to cook and eat pale blue-green skin that makes them a stylish addition to a contemporary tablescape Cut through the bluish skin and you'll be greeted by intense orange flesh with a dense texture and a hint of sweetness Australian cooks love to roast slices of this dramatic pumpkin as a savory side dish and Mary Jane Duford also recommends Jarrahdales for a range of other savory dishes is that the Jarrahdale's thick rind and dense flesh can be challenging to cut through — so if you plan to cook one heavy knife at the ready and prepare for a bit of a workout may be either the prettiest or ugliest pumpkin you've ever encountered It's certainly distinctive: It's deeply ribbed with bumpy warty skin that can range from green to tan Its vaguely reptilian look gives the impression of toughness and the orange flesh inside is delicate and flavorful Even your omnivore friends and family may enjoy it more than turkey a relatively uncommon French heirloom varietal is another proud member of the warty squash club other names for it include the Warted Sugar Marrow and these names are apt — the distinctive warts But if you find one and use it only for a Halloween or fall harvest display The warts are actually caused by the sugars that develop in the pumpkin's flesh dense flesh," according to Mary Jane Duford makes the Galeux d'Eysines another great option for a pie filling where its fruity sweetness and creamy texture play well with more savory seasonings Like other densely textured and richly flavored pumpkins it's a challenge to cut and work with — but if you're patient But some fairly normal-looking pumpkins can be great in the kitchen a newer pumpkin variety that cooks up like an heirloom It has a prototypical pumpkin shape – it's big and evenly shaped –- but it's distinguished by its pale pinkish-beige skin Duford shares that it's also a good all-purpose pumpkin for cooking While we have dozens of possible pumpkin types to choose from in principle supermarkets typically carry only a few decorative types This means you might have to do some legwork to find the more interesting varieties for cooking "Less common varieties can be grown at home and increasingly ordered from specialty retailers and boutique floral shops," Mary Jane Duford explains What most of Duford's recommended sources have in common is they feature locally grown pumpkins and more affordable than specialty pumpkins shipped across the country they allow you to experience regional cuisine in its purest form This is also why Hunter Evans looks for pumpkins grown just down the road from his Jackson "My all-time favorite pie is made from scratch using North Georgia Candy Roaster Heirloom pumpkins "This recipe might just make its debut on the Mayflower Café menu this fall." the Fairytale pumpkin (also known as Musquée de Provence) is a French heirloom variety One can easily imagine this being the pumpkin the storytellers who created Cinderella had in mind — it's so huge (typically 20 pounds or more) that one can easily imagine it as a round little coach Mary Jane Duford says that European markets often sell it in slices for cooking Because you're likely to obtain this variety in large quantities Its "deep flavor and smooth texture," Duford says make an especially rich and creamy pie filling where its dense flesh holds its shape well you can swap it in for any other winter squash variety in dishes such as soups or even tempura Editor's note: Step outside your pumpkin spice latte comfort zone and celebrate Indy Star Pumpkin Week Oct 18-23 when we highlight all delicious things pumpkin (#pumpkindy) Daniela Liverani experienced a number of nosebleeds but thought they were the result of a burst blood vessel following a motorbike crash I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice A British holidaymaker who went travelling in south-east Asia returned to the UK with a three-inch-long leech living in her nose. The creature is thought to have survived inside Daniela Liverani, 24, for more than a month without her realising it was there. She experienced a number of nosebleeds but thought they were the result of a burst blood vessel following a motorbike crash. “After I got home, the nosebleeds stopped and I started seeing something sticking out of my nostril. I just thought it was congealed blood from the nosebleeds,” she told the Sunday Mail. “I tried to blow him out and grab him but I couldn't get a grip of him before he retreated back up my nose. “When I was in the shower, he would come right out as far as my bottom lip and I could see him sticking out the bottom of my nose. So when that happened, I jumped out of the shower to look really closely in the mirror and I saw ridges on him. That's when I realised he was an animal.” Ms Liverani, of Edinburgh, was taken to hospital where a doctor tried to remove the leech with forceps and tweezers. “It was agony – whenever the doctor grabbed him, I could feel the leech tugging at the inside of my nose,” she said. “Then all of a sudden, after half an hour, the pain stopped and the doctor had the leech in the tweezers. He was about as long as my forefinger and as fat as my thumb.” Leech expert Mark Siddal, curator of the American Museum of Natural History in New York, said: “Daniela could have picked up this leech from water in Vietnam, if she had been swimming. Or it could have gone in through her mouth, as she was drinking water. “Even though it was there for around a month, these leeches don't grow all that quickly, so it wouldn't have been much smaller when it went up there. It would have been quite sizeable. It's interesting that people don't feel these leeches go up their nose.” Join thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their replies
