Architectural studio TEPHRA unveils Refuge of Stones, a shelter embedded along the Eau Morte riverbed in Faverges, France. Designed for the 2024 Festival of Cabins, the structure emerges from a reading of the site, where stones naturally tumble down from the surrounding mountains
forming an ever-evolving mineral landscape
The shelter acts as a threshold between the path and the river
inviting visitors to pause and reflect on the geological cycles shaping the terrain
At the heart of the installation are gabion walls constructed from seven tons of stones, harvested directly from the dry riverbed. These stones, usually hidden beneath flowing water, are revealed and placed in their new architectural context. Wood and steel elements complement the gabions
while their porous texture filters light and shadows
creating dynamic visual patterns that shift throughout the day
Inside the shelter, the French team of TEPHRA includes a long wooden bench that offers a place to sit and observe
drawing attention to the quiet yet powerful natural transformations of the landscape
The interplay of filtered light through the gabion walls and the movement of foliage above evokes the memory of water
recalling its past presence and hinting at its potential return
Refuge of Stones transforms the mosaic of the site into an architectural narrative
The installation connects architecture with nature and introduces visitors to the cyclical processes of erosion and renewal
offering a meditative retreat within the ever-changing environment of the Eau Morte riverbed

Text description provided by the architects. Built as part of the competition for the Festival des Cabanes 2023 in the Annecy region, Ploc! is a reinterpretation of the Japanese fountain system known as shishi-odoshi.
Ploc! is the onomatopoeia for the sound of two elements colliding. It also stands for Pluies LOCalisées. The Ploc hut is a portal, a passageway between this world and the sacred, between the domestic scale and the great landscape. Placed next to a church, its purpose is to extend the spiritual experience of the site by framing the mountain.
© David FoesselIt is conceived as a place where prayers are answered. Water falling from the sky is guided towards rocking cannons, based on the shishi-odoshi principle. When these are activated, on average after a few minutes in heavy rain, the magic happens and a series of "ploc" sounds are heard. The proximity of the sounds produced contrasts with the depth of the view. Ploc! is an invitation to rediscover the Annecy landscape, especially on rainy days.

Stäubli is starting the new year with a new chief executive officer – and it’s someone this website has interviewed before
previously responsible for the global business of the Robotics Division
will take over as CEO from retiring Rolf Strebel on January 1
an experienced manager from within the company’s own ranks will take over the management of the diversified and growing family-owned company
The 50-year-old Franco-German engineer and business economist has been responsible for the global Robotics business as Group Division Manager since mid-2016 and is already a member of the Group Management
Gerald Vogt initially moved from the development and production site in Faverges
Afterwards he returned to Faverges as Head of Development before taking over responsibility for the German business as Head of Stäubli Robotics in Bayreuth
To ensure a smooth transition and prepare for his future tasks as CEO
the Stäubli Board of Directors nominated Gerald Vogt as the designated successor to Rolf Strebel at the beginning of 2020
Gerald Vogt has accompanied the current CEO and is responsible for the introduction and implementation of the new business strategy for Stäubli until 2030
says: “We are delighted to have found in Gerald Vogt a forward-looking manager with an extensive international experience and a clear entrepreneurial spirit who is already very well connected within the Group

We wish him all the best for the time ahead.”

When most of us think about a career in the French Alps we can only dream of being a top Chef
daring rock climber or talented mountain guide...but imagine being all three
Chamonix born Jean Marie Olianti is just that
a mountain guide who is a member of the Compangie des Guides
a well experienced and skilled rock climber and skier
and he has also been a chef at the prestigious and influential Le Gavroche restaurant in London
The World is Not Enough for this ex-chef turned mountain guide
I was born in Chamonix but my family settled in Faverges near Annecy
I worked in a steel factory in Ugine for a while before undertaking a cooking apprenticeship in Thonon at the Ecole Hôtelière Internationale Savoie (one of the foremost hotel and catering schools in the World)
I started a career in cookery although I knew already that I wanted to become a mountain guide
What have been your biggest climbing achievements to date
I have climbed many mountains over the years
including several ascents in Africa of Kilimandjaro & Mont Kenya
the Matterhorn - it’s a mountain that I have climbed several times and that I like a lot
it was here in Chamonix that the climbs were there hardest
Do you still have a bucket list for mountaineering
I think I’ve accomplished most of what I wanted to do - I’m too old for long & difficult expeditions
today I’m rather interested in paragliding or technical rock climbing
I don’t have any expeditions planned
although I would love to take my family up Kilimanjaro
My only regret is not having spent enough time climbing and skiing with my kids
If you can have climbed with someone from the past who would it have been and why
Rene Desmaison or Walter Bonati
If you could live anywhere else in the world other than Chamonix
Morocco or Cape Town would be great but probably Annecy
I like Annecy for its proximity to the mountains and the lake
in the past you've worked with a number of Michelin starred restaurants and with the Roux brothers
I’ve worked for several Michelin-starred restaurants but I already knew back then that I was attracted by the profession of mountain guiding
It was interesting but in order to have a really good career in this field you need to be well known nationally or internationally
In fact, I met many great chefs and I am still friends with some of them. I worked with the Roux Brothers for 3 months in 1969. I was a great experience, I learnt a lot even in such a small amount of time. They were the first chefs to have a 3 Michelin starred restaurant in the UK (Le Gavroche)
I’m grateful I went through with my apprenticeship and I still enjoy cooking for my family and friends
Going back to your current job as a mountain guide
first of all it’s an interesting way of earning a living
you travel a lot and you meet great people on the way
It’s a profession I have always loved practising
Reaching the top of a mountain is an incredible sensation
people are not always tolerant and sometimes they don’t seem to understand the risks that can occur in the mountains
you can’t make mistakes and you constantly have to be attentive
You evolve on dangerous grounds so it your responsibility to keep clients safe
The ultimate goal is to bring them back safe and sound
A little bird told us you were in involved in a James Bond film
I worked for a James Bond movie - The World is Not Enough with Pierce Brosnan
They offered me the job because I was an experienced mountain guide and also qualified in avalanche control and to trigger avalanches
I was hired for this purpose and in order to secure some of the sites where the movie was shot
I was hung a couple times below a helicopter to retrieve pieces of a flying machine that had crushed in the forest
I was mainly responsible of the safety of the cameramen and the visitors
Where is your favourite place for lunch or dinner in Chamonix
Neaoplis
The atmosphere is lovely and the food is delicious
And finally what is your favourite thing to do when you are not in the mountains
If they weren’t so far I would probably go more often

the largest of the roughly 200 vineyards in Lavaux belongs to the neighbouring canton of Fribourg
found itself isolated in Protestant Vaud when
Fribourg and several other Catholic cantons briefly resisted incorporation into the Swiss Confederation
it was a small war,” says Gérald Vallélian
the Jesuits who had backed the rebellion were asked to leave
and the monks who cultivated the Domaine were given a few hours to vacate the premises
the land and its precious vines remained in Fribourg hands
which occupies 15 hectares overlooking the lake
produces a wide variety of exquisite white Chasselas wines
Roughly 30% of the production consists of red wines from Pinot Noir and Syrah grapes
The wine is aged in giant oak casks dating back to the 1870s
The aging process produces a special microoxydation
is currently exploring the advantages of a more biologically natural production
The amazing diversity of the Domaine’s production – it turns out some 140,000 bottles a year – makes it difficult to know which bottle to choose
“It is not a question of quality,” says Vallélian

it places the visitor in the active role of watching over this fragile landscape
symbolized by the swing which oscillates between the two singular atmospheres offered by the land and the forest
the canada and france-based studio collectif REV.L designs its le gardien pavilion with great respect for its natural surroundings
the landscape of the pays de faverges is the result of a long-standing balance between a spectacular natural territory and a human culture that has adapted to the powerful character of the mountains
this balance is actively maintained by the inhabitants thanks to their constant work on the territory
the cycle is structured as a network of actors who extract
all contribute to its transformation and preservation
collectif REV.L’s le gardien is the result of these processes
the simplicity of its volume represents the simple daily work of the inhabitants
the shelter places the visitor in the active role of watching over this fragile balance
going and coming from one atmosphere to another
the constructive system offers a contrast between two worlds — the land side which focuses on the macro-landscape through a long space framed by wooden planks
and the forest side which opens onto its surroundings and highlights nearby micro-elements including stumps
visitors follow a pathway that runs along the forest and the river
the simple massing and the vertical structure of the pavilion lends it to blend into the forest
le gardien humbly takes its place among the trees
they are faced by an entrance marked by the presence of a stump and are invited to take a seat on the swing
it offers a simple and striking experience of two atmospheres which are the essence of the agricultural mountain landscape
and the sound of the river below is omnipresent and relaxing
